▼ The Polar regions are considered to be particularly susceptible to the effects of climate change. Although there is evidence for warming in the Antarctic during the last century, few long-term ecological monitoring programmes have been initiated in this region. Zooplankton have been demonstrated to be excellent environmental indicators and in 1991 a Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) survey was established in the Southern Ocean south of Australia for monitoring purposes. Using data collected between October 2001 and March 2002 this thesis aimed to provide baseline data for the Southern Ocean CPR survey, and the first high resolution (— 5 nm), ocean-basin scale sampling of zooplankton communities south of Australia. As a primary step the sampling characteristics of the CPR were investigated by direct comparison of depth integrated NORPAC net samples with CPR samples (average depth — 10.5 m). Data were collected on a repeat transect along 140°E, between November and December 2001. Species richness and Shannon-Weaver diversity increased, while dominance decreased with depth. The CPR under-represented components of the zooplankton community relative to NORPAC samples from the equivalent depth zone (0-20 m), particularly fast moving and soft bodied taxa, however, both of these surface sample groups were characterised by high densities of Oithona similis and appendicularia. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that the CPR effectively identified the location of the biogeographic boundary represented by the Southern Sub-Antarctic Front (SAF-S). After calibration of the CPR, two major components of natural ecosystem variability were investigated: spatial and temporal. The fine-scale horizontal structure of zooplankton communities was quantified from an 1170 nm transect along 140°E, conducted between 25 February and 3 March 2002. Six distinct zooplankton communities were identified, characterised by sharp boundaries which were strongly correlated with oceanographic fronts, demonstrating both the biogeographic importance of fronts and the sensitivity of zooplankton to their physical environment. The high degree of community complexity south of Australia reflected the regions unique oceanographic structure, characterised by multiple branches of the Sub-Antarctic Front, Polar Front, and Southern Antarctic Circumpolar Current Front. Zooplankton communities were also influenced by phytoplankton community structure and mesoscale processes (e.g. eddy shedding, cross-frontal advection). The seasonal component of temporal variability was investigated for two distinct regions, the SIZ and the Sub-Antarctic / Polar Frontal Zone (SAZ / PFZ). ▼ Significant loss of wetland habitat with the subsequent loss of suitable habitat for juvenile fish in the San Francisco Estuary has led state and federal agencies along with university researchers to unite in the CALFED Bay Delta Program, which has restored several previously non-tidal marshes in the Estuary to various degrees of tidal amplitude. Hypothetically, reference/historical marshes that have not been diked, dredged or filled should yield greater zooplankton densities (a primary source of food for juvenile fish) compared to marshes recently restored to tidal action. This study examines the hypothesis by comparing zooplankton population densities among reference and restored marshes and testing for a correlation between increased zooplankton densities and increased fish densities within the marshes. Zooplankton sampling occurred approximately monthly (not all sites were accessible each month) at two major reference sites (Edith West Reference Marsh and Statelands Reference Marsh) and at six restored sites (Inner McNabney/Shell Marsh, Outer McNabney/Shell Marsh, Waterfront Marsh, Pt. Edith Marsh, Navy Marsh, all in southern Suisun Bay, and Tubbs Island Marsh in San Pablo Bay). Limited zooplankton sampling was also conducted at two additional reference marshes 10 km up the Delta from Suisun Bay (Northern Brown's Island Marsh and Sherman Island Marsh). At each marsh, zooplankton samples were obtained near the entrance of the tidal channel. The hypothesis of higher reference marsh zooplankton densities was rejected for several marshes with tidal pools connected to the tidal channels; these marshes yielded significantly higher zooplankton densities than the reference marshes. Magnitude of the mean differences ranged from 300-1000%. Furthermore, increased zooplankton densities in these restored marshes with connected tidal pools correlated with increased densities of small fishes. However, two restored marshes lacking tidal pools and one marsh with a small tidal pool yielded significantly lower overall zooplankton densities when compared to the reference marshes though the magnitude of differences in the mean were small (approximately 1-3%). Both additional reference marshes further up the Delta (Northern Brown's Island, and Sherman Island) yielded low zooplankton densities similar to that of the original reference marshes. Additionally, other researchers involved in our CALFED study noted reference marshes and restored marshes lacking tidal pools yielded fewer fish and epibenthic animals (amphipods, cumaceans, isopods, etc.) than did the marshes with tidal pools connected to the tidal channels. Generally, calanoid copepods were the predominant taxa at all sites and other taxonomic lists were fairly similar among the reference and restored marsh sites. Since restoration is a relatively new area of study, restoration efforts should proceed cautiously with restoration plans tailored to meet the unique environmental conditions present at each site. ▼ Zooplankton are an important component of marine systems and underpin many economically important fisheries. Open-ocean plankton communities are being affected by climate change but less is known about coastal systems. The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) requires member nations to be able to detect changes in plankton community structure beyond those caused by natural variability. The paucity of knowledge on zooplankton dynamics in western Scotland hinders these legislative assessments. This thesis aims to fill this knowledge gap by a) providing a detailed description of mesozooplankton community dynamics in western Scottish waters, b) understanding the underlying drivers, and c) assessing the suitability of describing the plankton community of the western Scotland region by sampling at a single location. Data were primarily derived from Loch Ewe, a long-term plankton monitoring site within the Scottish Coastal Observatory that has been sampled every week since 2002. Loch Ewe displayed the typical seasonality of physiochemistry observed in temperate marine systems, although sea surface temperature (SST) and salinity declined over the time series. SST and chlorophyll 'a' explained the highest variation in zooplankton density, with their community composition being dominated by small calanoid copepods and appendicularians throughout the sampling period. Copepod diversity was significantly higher than in other UK waters, potentially reflecting higher chlorophyll 'a' concentrations and the advection of oceanic species into the site. Contrasting species specific responses to environmental variables within the same taxonomic groups highlighted the difficulty of pooling zooplankton taxa to represent aspects of ecosystem functioning. Comparison of the physiochemical properties and zooplankton communities at sites in western Scottish waters and in the Shetland Isles revealed that the latter was distinguished by higher salinities and lower SS By contrast, zooplankton communities sampled at disparate locations across the west coast could not be distinguished statistically, indicating that, at the taxonomic resolution and spatial scales examined, a single monitoring site is representative of the wider west coast region. This thesis provides two recommendations for future plankton monitoring: (1) The addition of a warm-water and cold-water copepod assemblage lifeform pair indicator within the UK Plankton Index is useful for discerning the effects of ocean warming. (2) The establishment of an additional zooplankton monitoring site in the Shetland Isles is required in order to meet MSFD assessment requirements.

▼ In eastern boundary current upwelling ecosystems, mesoscale circulation features such as eddies and upwelling filaments play a prominent role in the transfer of water and the associated plankton from the productive nearshore to the oligotrophic deep sea. The relationship between mesoscale circulation, zooplankton distributions, and the across-shelf transport of coastal taxa and biomass in the California Current System was studied using data collected as part of the U.S. Global Ocean Ecosystems Dynamics (GLOBEC) Northeast Pacific Program. Sea surface height from >13 years of satellite altimeter data was used to characterize the spatial and temporal variability in mesoscale circulation in the northern California Current (35°N-49°N) and explore mechanisms of variability. High spatial and temporal variation in mesoscale energy occurred. Energy was not strongly linked to upwelling winds, but did correspond to climate indices, indicating that basin-scale processes play a role in controlling the circulation. CTD casts, zooplankton net tows, and Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) velocities collected during a research cruise conducted in summer 2000 off Oregon and northern California were used to describe the effects of mesoscale circulation on distributions of zooplankton. During the cruise, a filament of the coastal upwelling jet extended seaward of Cape Blanco (42.8°N) resulting in the displacement of coastal zooplankton to >100 km off the continental shelf. Velocities and standing stocks of zooplankton were used to estimate seaward transport of 0.5 Sv in the upper 100 m of the filament, in which zooplankton biomass averaged ~20 mg carbon/m³. That offshore transport equated to >900 metric tons of carbon each day, and 4-5x10⁴ tons over the 6-8 week lifetime of the circulation feature. Although the flux represented a small portion (<2%) of the shelf zooplankton biomass, the transport resulted in an offshore "hot-spot" in which biomass was 3-4X higher than in the surrounding ocean. Distributions of early life history stages of euphausiids indicated that retention of coastal populations may be strongly affected by the offshore advection. Finally, satellite sea surface temperature (SST) and sampling conducted during five summers were used to explore variability in the relationship between mesoscale circulation features and distributions of zooplankton. Circulation patterns differed among cruises and were reflected in zooplankton distributions. Circulation features resulted in the occurrence of cold surface water and coastal taxa offshore, but species abundances and presence/absence of taxa at specific locations were not predictable from satellite SSTs. These results are relevant to studies of ecosystem dynamics and the global carbon cycle because mesoscale circulation plays an important role in the seaward transport of carbon, retention and loss of taxa from the continental shelf, and creation of offshore structure which may be exploited by upper trophic level organisms. ▼ Theoretical and empirical work has shown that community diversity and composition can be influenced by both local conditions and dispersal from a regional species pool. This may be especially true shortly after environmental disturbances, because perturbations can provide spatial or temporal niche opportunities for dispersers to establish. Theory predicts that after environmental disturbances tolerant functionally-redundant dispersing species can establish in disturbed communities, maintaining local community diversity and ecosystem function; however, this model relies on the successful establishment of dispersers (i.e., the community must be invasible). Invasibility is expected to decline as time-since-disturbance increases because the local community can use freed resources and increases in abundance. Although studies have acknowledged that timing may influence invasibility, very few studies have focused on how dispersal timing influences the role of dispersal in community response to disturbance. My thesis was conducted to test the role of crustacean zooplankton dispersal timing in the establishment success, and subsequent influence on diversity and ecosystem function of dispersers. To assess this, a field mesocosm study was completed in Churchill, Canada to test the effects of disturbance (nutrients and salinity) and immigration timing (from 51 regional ponds/pools) on invasibility, local community structure and ecosystem functioning (i.e., chl-a). Results show that invasibility was initially high following disturbance, but decreased with time- since-disturbance as the resident community exerted priority effects over dispersers. As a result community diversity was most influenced by immigration when dispersers were added shortly after disturbance. Many coarse measures of diversity were resistant to disturbance, but community composition and the relative abundance of functional groups shifted, and likely influence ecosystem function (i.e., chl-a). When dispersers were added to disturbed communities ecosystem function was recovered to undisturbed levels. Overall, my results suggest that dispersal timing can influence the role of dispersal in communities and the ability of species to capitalize on windows of invasion opportunity will influence their ability to establish in favorable local patches.

▼ Modern threats to freshwater biota include anthropogenic eutrophication and invasive species, both of which may impact biodiversity. My four chapters focus on different aspects of these global changes. In Chapters 1 and 2, I focus on the effects of the harmful algal blooms caused by anthropogenic eutrophication on native freshwater grazers. In Chapter 3, I focus on a feature that complicates our understanding of diversity of zooplankton and other animals: cryptic species. In Chapter 4, I examine the environmental factors associated with abundance and morphology of an invasive zooplankter. Taken together, my work shows the myriad of effects and important considerations in studying the effects of global change on freshwater zooplankton. In my first two chapters, I address the effects of harmful algal blooms that occur as a result of anthropogenic eutrophication. I tested how exposure to the toxigenic cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa affects the common rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus, both within and across generations. In Chapter 1, using a laboratory experiment, I found evidence of carry over effects, meaning that individuals exposed to high amounts of good food (Chlamydomonas sp.) could later withstand exposure to Microcystis better than individuals that were fed low amounts of food during early development. Thus, as blooms of cyanobacteria become longer in duration and more frequent, rotifer populations may experience compounding negative effects. Further, I found that offspring produced by mothers fed Microcystis were of lower quality (measured as ovary:body ratio) and, if the mother had initially been fed a low amount of food, were also significantly smaller. However, offspring produced by mothers exposed to Microcystis after having been reared on high amounts of good quality food produced significantly larger offspring. This led me to hypothesize that the larger size of these offspring could be adaptive under poor food conditions. In Chapter 2, I tested this hypothesis by raising mothers in either Microcystis or Chlamydomonas, and then raising their offspring in either of the two treatments. Based on the maternal match hypothesis, I predicted that offspring would have higher population growth rates if reared on the same diet as their mother. However, the results of my experiment did not support this hypothesis. Instead, I found that offspring produced by mothers reared on Chlamydomonas had higher fecundity and survival than those produced by mothers reared on Microcystis, regardless of the offspring diet. The results of this chapter, taken together with those of Chapter 1, suggest that blooms of toxigenic cyanobacteria may have more extensive negative effects on grazer populations than have been previously suggested, based on single generation studies. In Chapter 3, I consider patterns in the discovery of cryptic species across animal taxa. ▼ This thesis examines the ecology of zooplankton, midwater fishes and top predators off the east coast of Tasmania in relation to the regional oceanography. This work was completed from small (<15 m) to large (60 + m) fishing and fisheries research vessels using nets ranging from fine-meshed plankton nets (100 µm) to large midwater trawls (cod end mesh size 10 mm). Further data was obtained from the Maria Island hydrographic station and the AFZ observer program. The study area was situated in and around the northern edge of the subtropical convergence zone. This zone separates the most southern edge of the East Australia Current from the broader subtropical convergence and subantarctic water to the south. The latitudinal position of this front depends not only on the time of year - in the summer it extends southward and retreats in winter - but also on interannual cycles such as the El Nino Southern Oscillation. On the shelf the distribution and biomass of the major zooplankton species, Nyctiphanes australis, was closely related to fluctuations in these water masses. This species is central to the shelf food web - it is, at times, the main prey for predators ranging in size from larval fishes (eg. those of jack mackerel Trachurus declivis) to large southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyii). In autumn, when its biomass is highest, schools of its main fish predator, jack mackerel form on the surface over the shelf where they are fished commercially. The central position of N. australis in the shelf food web was demonstrated in the summer of 1988/89 when warm waters from an anti El Nino event flushed the shelf resulting in the disappearance of the krill and the subsequent collapse of the jack mackerel fishery. Over the continental slope a suite of myctophid species dominated the water column. These lanternfish aggregate in dense schools over the slope in spring and summer, migrating to the surface at dusk and descending before dawn to depths between 300- 500 m. Their horizontal distribution is restricted mainly to a thin band (-500 m wide) over the 300 m contour. One of these, Lampanyctodes hectoris, was central to the upper slope food web. Examination of the reproductive cycles of L. hectoris and other abundant lanternfish showed multiple spawning over winter. The winter spawning is presumably timed so that juveniles can take advantage of increased prey levels, mainly euphausiids, which are generated by the spring bloom. Growth in L. hectoris, which lives up to 3 years, is fastest at this time. In winter they are scarce over the slope. The reasons for this scarcity are not clear, but it is at least partly due to the massive predation on them. However, lack of feed - copepods are the main prey over winter - may limit the size of aggregations that can be sustained. ▼ Estuarine phytoplankton growth is often controlled by nitrogen availability. In addition to overall nitrogen loads, nitrogen form (organic vs. inorganic) is an important factor affecting estuarine phytoplankton growth and community composition. Recent studies have shown that in addition to nitrogen availability, trophic cascades and relaxation of grazing pressure may also be important for phytoplankton bloom formation in estuaries. With a goal of better understanding how nitrogen availability and grazing pressure interact to control estuarine phytoplankton growth and community composition, we examined the individualistic as well as the combined effects of nitrogen (varying availability and form) and grazing pressure on estuarine phytoplankton growth and community composition in the Neuse River Estuary, North Carolina, USA. During each of three sampling events (June 2011, August 2011, March 2012) natural phytoplankton assemblages were manipulated with added nitrogen (as urea or nitrate) and reduced grazing pressure (by filtering out zooplankton grazers). Treatments were incubated for 48 hours in an experimental pond, and subsamples taken daily to assess phytoplankton growth responses to treatments through chlorophyll a, diagnostic photopigments and cell enumerations. The effects of nitrogen additions and reduced grazing pressure varied throughout the events. In June, only nitrogen addition stimulated phytoplankton community growth (chlorophyll a), while in August, only grazing reduction had a significant impact on community growth. Neither treatment had a significant effect on community growth in March, as the phytoplankton community faced phosphorus-limitation and decreased grazing pressure associated with cooler winter/spring temperatures. While both treatments did not continuously effect overall phytoplankton growth throughout all experiments, there were always effects seen in some diagnostic photopigments, indicating varying taxa-specific responses to treatments throughout the year, which can be explained by shifts in phytoplankton community composition and environmental factors. These results demonstrate the importance of both bottom-up (nutrient availability and form) and top-down (grazing) controls in a temperate, eutrophic estuary. Results also hint at the potential for other factors (i.e. light and phosphorus-limitation) to play a role in phytoplankton growth as well. Phytoplankton growth, biomass and community dynamics are relevant indicators of environmental change and this study highlights the need to consider the potential interactive effects of controlling factors for proper management of estuarine ecosystems. ▼ Lakes near Sudbury, Ontario, experienced widespread acidification and metal-contamination beginning in the late-19th century. These stressors caused extreme damage to regional aquatic systems and their catchments, with aquatic biota experiencing reduced species richness and, in some cases, extirpations. Emission control measures markedly improved pH, however biotic recovery continues to lag water quality improvements, prompting investigation into mechanisms leading to this phenomenon. Due to the lack of long-term monitoring data, I use paleolimnological approaches to examine temporal trends in cladoceran zooplankton, from pre-impact conditions, through the period of acidification/metal contamination, and following the implementation of emission controls. I assess the degree of biotic recovery that has taken place in these lakes, and review the mechanisms that continue to structure cladoceran assemblages. Lakes closest to Sudbury recorded increases of ~15-65% relative abundance of Chydorus brevilabris, concurrent with the late-1800s industrial development. The relative abundance of C. brevilabris remains elevated above pre-impact levels in two Sudbury lakes; however, in Middle Lake, which was neutralized with calcium carbonate, declines in C. brevilabris (to ~pre-impact levels) occurred following neutralization. Conversely, lakes located ~60 km southwest of Sudbury, in Killarney Provincial Park, experienced muted assemblage change, with minor (< ~5%) increases in grazers (e.g., Daphnia spp., Holopedium glacialis) occurring within the past ~40 years. Lakes in Sudbury and Killarney acidified to pH < ~5, however those in Sudbury additionally received high inputs of nickel and copper, which have toxic effects on aquatic organisms, including some Cladocera. Contamination with these metals may have been a primary driver of cladoceran assemblage change. Elevated metal concentrations likely continue to structure the cladoceran assemblages in the Sudbury lakes. In addition, many of the lakes contain altered food webs (e.g., large populations of yellow perch) as a legacy of the acid and metal contamination, acting as a potential barrier to recovery. Finally, warming air temperatures over the past ~40 years, which I link to increases in primary production, may alter the composition of cladoceran species found in these lakes, and therefore prevent a return to pre-impact conditions.

▼ The movement of fish from aquaculture facilities has led to invasions of non-native species globally, including of ‘hitch-hiking’ species, resulting in impacts on the composition of communities in recipient ecosystems. This thesis employs both community scale analysis and sensitive molecular techniques to assess the effects of grass carp translocations on zooplankton communities and to determine the origins of an incidental non-native invader. In the first component, I tested the effects of grass carp translocations from aquaculture facilities on ponds in the Auckland region, New Zealand. Zooplankton community composition was quantified in 34 ponds that had been subject to grass carp release and 31 which had no grass carp introductions. A significant difference in zooplankton community composition was observed between ponds that had received grass carp translocations and those that had not. Differences in zooplankton community composition between ponds with and without carp releases were attributable to: 1) the establishment of zooplankton originating from aquaculture ponds, including non-native species; and 2) the effects of grass carp activity, through habitat modification. Effective measures to curb the proliferation of non-native taxa within aquaculture facilities, and to mitigate the unintentional movement of non-native taxa with translocations from these facilities, are required to reduce future introductions. In the second component of this thesis I used a fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene to more precisely identify the origins of invasions of freshwater calanoid copepod Skistodiaptomus pallidus (Herrick 1879). This was applied to populations sampled from within New Zealand, which have been linked to the release of fish from aquaculture facilities, and to populations found in Germany, which have possible links to a shipping vector. The S. pallidus COI sequences placed both the New Zealand and German specimens with those from the most easterly regions of the USA (e.g., New York, Virginia and Georgia). However, several haplotypes were found to be divergent between the New Zealand and German populations, indicating the exact sources of the introductions were likely different for each country. German sequences had greater haplotype diversity than those from New Zealand, supporting the suggestions of a shipping related vector of introduction to Germany. Both German and New Zealand populations contained haplotypes that were closely related to North American sequence records. However, further sampling of the native range will be required to determine the exact origin of the non-indigenous S. pallidus populations. With this additional information it may also be possible to determine more precisely the vectors of introduction. Collectively, the two research chapters provide a broader understanding of invasion processes and the effects of grass carp translocations on the zooplankton communities within recipient ponds in New Zealand. ▼ Selected zooplankton from three oligotrophic lakes in Oregon were studied to determine whether or not their instantaneous birth rates and densities could be used in lake classification. The species of zooplankton studied in their respective lakes were Daphnia, pulex in Crater Lake, Daphnia longispina in Odell Lake, and Daphnia longispina and Diaphanosoma brachyurum in Woahink Lake. Instantaneous birth rates, densities and other population parameters were estimated for these species. The species studied in Odell and Woahink Lakes were also collected to determine the relationship between diel vertical distribution of these species and the temperature and phytoplankton primary production occurring in the lakes, Woahink Lake Daphnia had the highest instantaneous birth rates for Daphnia sp. of the three lakes. However, Woahink Lake Daphnia carried fewer eggs and were less dense than Daphnia in Odell Lake on every sampling date. Crater Lake Daphnia were usually less dense and had lower instantaneous birth rates than was observed for the Woahink Lake Daphnia. Because of changes in the density of zooplankters from one year to the next, as occurred with Daphnia in Crater Lake, and the lack of correlation between phytoplankton primary production and density, as occurred for Daphnia and Diaphanosoma in Woahink Lake, application of these population dynamics to lake systematics were nullified. The finite birth rate also lacked the expected correlation with phytoplankton primary production for all the selected species in the study lakes. The lack of correlation may be due to interactions between the total species of zooplankton present in the lakes. If instantaneous birth rate and density were calculated for all the species in each lake it might be possible to use them for lake classification. However, the time expended in analysis would be prohibitive. The did vertical distribution of Daphnia in Odell. Lake showed a typical migration to the surface at night and a return to deeper water during daylight hours. In Woahink Lake, however, Daphnia and Diaphanosoma were found to migrate only when the lake reached temperatures near 15°C or greater. The phytoplankton primary production occurring during the periods when migration did not take place, was equal to or greater than that occurring during some of the periods when vertical migration did occur. ▼ Zooplankton community structure was studied monthly in Myponga and South Para Reservoirs in South Australia from January 2008 to June 2009. Myponga Reservoir is a highly managed reservoir with prolong artificial mixing while South Para Reservoir is non-managed and has less human perturbation. The total number of taxa in Myponga and South Para Reservoirs were 16 and 20 respectively. Cladocera was the dominant taxonomic group in relation to the total number of taxa but in terms of total density, Copepoda were the numerically dominant group in both reservoirs. The most frequently occurring Cladocera were Ceriodaphnia cf. quadrangula, Ceriodaphnia cornuta and Bosmina meridionalis while Asplanchna priodonta was the predominant Rotifera throughout the study. Copepoda were dominated by Calamoecia ampulla and Microcyclops sp., making up the largest portion of total zooplankton density. Differences with regard to species richness were due to the sole occurrence of Polyarthra dolichoptera, Keratella slacki, Anuraeopsis fissa and Pompholyx complanata in South Para Reservoir. Observations showed relatively consistent species diversity and density throughout the study in Myponga Reservoir except for low densities during summer for Cladocera and Copepoda groups while seasonal variations in zooplankton composition and abundance are features of South Para Reservoir. Shallow locations have greater zooplankton densities compared to deep locations in both reservoirs. Nevertheless, vertical migration in shallow locations was inexplicit as compared to deep locations in Myponga Reservoir. Physico-chemical factors particularly water temperature and biological factors including the occurrence of green algae and cyanobacteria may influence zooplankton abundance and the dynamics of the community. Thermal stratification and circulation resulted in brief population dispersion and consequently had a fluctuation of seasonal distribution pattern of zooplankton. Both horizontal gradients and stratification are strong factors enhancing zooplankton richness at South Para Reservoir. The functional responses of Daphnia carinata, D. lumholtzi and Ceriodaphnia cf. quadrangula to six algal species at three concentrations are described. The ingestion and filtration rates were measured by Low Revolutions per Minute Tumbler (LRPMT) for 2 hours at 20 °C. Ingestion and filtration rates varied with algal species and concentrations. Daphnia carinata removed algal cells at a higher rate than other two species when feeding on uni- and multi-algal species suspensions. Quantitative differences in the rate of food intake were found in suspensions of Ankistrodesmus falcatus, Scenedesmus obliquus, Chlorella vulgaris, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Anabaena circinalis and Microcystis flos-aquae. Small cells of green algae were more readily ingested by grazers. Ingestion rate increased linearly with cell concentration up to a maximal rate. ▼ This dissertation focuses on the distribution, reproduction, and transport of zooplankton in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas and adjacent Canada Basin. Specifically, it analyzes 1) the species-specific distribution of copepod nauplii as it is forced by the surface layer mesoscale circulation and physical properties, 2) the reproduction of the dominant copepod Calanus glacialis in the western Arctic, and 3) the effects of eddy transport on the zooplankton community in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas and Canada Basin. To achieve this I adapted a molecular identification method to work with small crustaceans. The method was successfully used to generate a sequence database from adult copepods of species present in the region. Differences in the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit ribosomal were sufficient for the identification of all species present in the western Arctic with the exception of two sibling Calanus copepods which were discriminated using the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene. The application of this semi-robotic protocol to selected surface samples collected from the USCGC Healy in summer 2004 revealed that four copepod species dominated the naupliar community: Oithona similis, C. glacialis, Pseudocalanus minutus, and P. mimus. Each species had different abundance and distribution patterns related to their specific life cycles and environmental affinities. The molecular identification method was then applied to study the egg production rates of C. glacialis and differentiate it from C. marshallae. This work validated reported spatial and seasonal variations in egg production rates in C. glacialis and showed that an increase in primary production in summer 2004 compared to summer 2002 did not result in an increase in secondary production of this copepod. The last component of this study is the result of a unique sampling design to study shelf-basin interactions. The results provided evidence of on-shelf transport of basin organisms by a wind-induced upwelling event and of eddy-mediated advection of zooplankton from the surrounding shelves into the Arctic basin. Overall, this study integrated new molecular tools and unusual sampling opportunities to advance our understanding of the role zooplankton in this Arctic ecosystem. ▼ Understanding the dynamics of plankton populations is of major importance since plankton form the basis of marine food webs throughout the world's oceans and play a significant role in the global carbon cycle. In this thesis we examine the dynamical behaviour of plankton models, exploring sensitivities to the number of variables explicitly modelled, to the functional forms used to describe interactions, and to the parameter values chosen. The practical difficulties involved in data collection lead to uncertainties in each of these aspects of model formulation. The first model we investigate consists of three coupled ordinary differential equations, which measure changes in the concentrations of nutrient, phytoplankton and zooplankton. Nutrient fuels the growth of the phytoplankton, which are in turn grazed by the zooplankton. The recycling of excretion adds feedback loops to the system. In contrast to a previous hypothesis, the three variables can undergo oscillations when a quadratic function for zooplankton mortality is used. The oscillations arise from Hopf bifurcations, which we track numerically as parameters are varied. The resulting bifurcation diagrams show that the oscillations persist over a wide region of parameter space, and illustrate to which parameters such behaviour is most sensitive. The oscillations have a period of about one month, in agreement with some observational data and with output of larger seven-component models. The model also exhibits fold bifurcations, three-way transcritical bifurcations and Bogdanov-Takens bifurcations, resulting in homo clinic connections and hysteresis. Under different ecological assumptions, zooplankton mortality is expressed by a linear function, rather than the quadratic one. Using the linear function does not greatly affect the nature of the Hopf bifurcations and oscillations, although it does eliminate the homoclinicity and hysteresis. We re-examine the influential paper by Steele and Henderson (1992), in which they considered the linear and quadratic mortality functions. We correct an anomalous normalisation, and then use our bifurcation diagrams to interpret their findings. A fourth variable, explicitly modelling detritus (non-living organic matter), is then added to our original system, giving four coupled ordinary differential equations. The dynamics of the new model are remarkably similar to those of the original model, as demonstrated by the persistence of the oscillations and the similarity of the bifurcation diagrams. A second four-component model is constructed, for which zooplankton can graze on detritus in addition to phytoplankton. The oscillatory behaviour is retained, but with a longer period. Finally, seasonal forcing is introduced to all of the models, demonstrating how our dynamical systems approach aids understanding of model behaviour and can assist with model formulation.

▼ Cyanobacteria occupy diverse aquatic habitats and their ecological success is expected to increase under predicted future climate scenarios. Managing cyanobacteria abundance in freshwaters is therefore critical for reducing risks to human and animal health. One species that is currently undergoing range expansion from subtropical to temperate habitats is Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii. C. raciborskii is ecologically successful because of its (1) competitive nutrient acquisition and storage mechanisms (e.g. high affinity for phosphorus (P) and ammonium, high P-storage capacity); (2) wide thermal tolerance, superior shade tolerance and buoyancy regulation; (Briand et al. 2002) and (3) resistance to grazing. To date, research to understand the formation of C. raciborskii blooms and toxicity have mostly focused on environmental factors, but the importance of food web interactions in regulating blooms has been little investigated. In particular, there is a need to examine these foodweb interactions in subtropical systems in the Southern Hemisphere because much of the current understanding about zooplankton-cyanobacteria interactions comes from temperate systems dominated by large-bodied cladocerans. Given that warmer subtropical systems are dominated by copepods and smaller-bodied individuals, it is likely that interactions between zooplankton and phytoplankton have different outcomes for cyanobacterial bloom formation. To understand the mechanisms of toxic cyanobacterium C. raciborskii bloom formation in subtropical oligotrophic Australian lakes, a series of investigations were undertaken across multiple spatial and temporal scales to test the hypothesis that C. raciborskii growth is facilitated by meso-zooplankton. Specifically, small-scale laboratory experiments (~100 ml) examined zooplankton grazing and tested whether copepods avoid consumption of C. raciborskii under food saturating conditions (Chapter 2). Both the direct (grazing) and indirect (nutrient regeneration) effects of zooplankton on C. raciborskii were further examined in laboratory experiments (Chapter 3). These laboratory experiments were then scaled up to mesocosms (~500 litres), where in situ C. raciborskii growth was examined under different treatments (control, 1x and 5x ambient zooplankton abundance, 5x ambient zooplankton abundance + inorganic P) (Chapter 4). Comparisons between zooplankton populations were also made at the reservoir scale, testing to see whether lakes experiencing C. raciborskii blooms had different zooplankton biomass, size structure and functional group composition compared to lakes that do not experience blooms (Chapter 5). In Chapter 2, the hypothesis that copepod consumers discriminate against C. raciborskii was tested.
