▼ In 2002 the Federal Communications Commission of
the United State officially released the regulation for Ultra
wideband technology In this regulation, the spectrum from 3 1 GHz
to 106 GHz is allocated to the unlicensed indoor UWB communication
systems According to this regulation UWB technology which is based
on transmitting ultra short newlinepulses with duration of only a
few nanoseconds or less has recently received great attention in
various fields for the short distance wireless communications
Because of the ultra wideband property UWB technology has many
benefits, which are high data rate low power consumption
compactness low cost excellent immunity to multipath interference
and reduced hardware complexity Due to these advantages a need
arises to design and develop an antenna for UWB applications A
competent UWB antenna should be capable of operating over an ultra
wide bandwidth as assigned by the FCC But over the allocated UWB
frequency range there exist 5 GHz Wireless Local Area Network bands
which may interfere with the ultra wideband Therefore an antenna
with band notched function for 5 GHz WLAN is highly desirable to
overcome this difficulty Nowadays it is often necessary to design
an antenna which can be used for multifunctional wireless
communication systems such as 2 4 GHz WLAN and UWB
newlinecommunications Another key requirement of this antenna is of
the good time newlinedomain behavior i e a good impulse response
with minimal distortion newline newline

▼ An array antenna consists of a group of radiating
elements forming a single aperture to transmit and receive
electromagnetic energy. This work focuses on the analysis,
development, and design of array antennas geared towards operation
over wide frequency bandwidths. As a consequence of the present
effort, both the geometry and the operation theory of a louver
array antenna are developed, and their use in wide-band antenna
arrays investigated.; This dissertation begins by first
establishing the electromagnetic boundary condition associated with
the radiating aperture of an antenna array made of identical cells.
Then, it proceeds to impose this condition on Maxwell's equations
to yield the array radiated field as an infinite plane wave
spectrum.; To properly investigate the energy transfer efficiency
of an array, from circuit to free space, the Poynting theorem is
used to determine the power balance equation of the antenna. From
this analysis, an aperture reflection coefficient is defined and
introduced as a convenient figure-of-merit to gauge the
effectiveness of the antenna as an energy transducer. For
demonstration purposes, this aperture reflection coefficient is
then applied to study the characteristics of the frequently used
rectangular microstrip patch array. It is shown that the patch
array geometry is prone to excite evanescent fields (i.e., store
reactive energy) in its aperture region, causing it to require a
highly reactive, and therefore narrow band, matching network behind
each element to ensure proper operation. In contrast, the louver
array primarily excites a dominant mode field that exactly emulates
the desired radiated plane wave, with nearly no evanescent field
generation. Since a band-limiting matching structure is not
required (to compensate evanescent fields), the louver antenna is
inherently
wideband. In addition to this fact, the louver antenna
is amenable to be integrated directly with semiconductor
electronics. This feature allows the future implementation of a
densely populated array antenna with fractional wavelength element
spacing to enable broad band, wide angle, grating-lobe-free beam
scan.; Even though no experimental work was performed for this
research, a systematic array design and analysis procedure is
presented at the end of this dissertation. To demonstrate their
application, a louver array antenna is then designed for a 30-to-1
operation frequency band. As a preliminary validation, this louver
array is then modeled using an established commercial
finite-element numerical analysis software. Both the analytically
and the numerically predicted array performances obtained show
close agreement. This validates the design and analysis procedures
presented, as well as demonstrate their applicability for
implementing high efficiency,
wideband, wide scan angle array
antennas.

▼ Emergent services are demanding higher data rates, especially in the downlink. Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) is the key to reach this development in cellular communications. To obtain this, it is important to find schemes able to reduce Inter-Path Interference (IPI) and Multiple Access Interference (MAI), and to explore new types of diversity. These are the objectives of the present thesis.
Interference cancellation subject considers post-processing and pre-processing schemes. A new linear Multi-User Detector (MUD) is proposed and analyzed. As pre-processing schemes, the new Pre-distortion and the Precoder schemes are studied and analyzed.
New types of diversity are also presented and analyzed. A new post-processing detector for the Vertical Bell Laboratories Layered Space-Time (V-BLAST) Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) scheme, optimized for WCDMA signals subject to frequency selective fading, is proposed and analyzed. Moreover, a new frequency domain pre-processing scheme for frequency-selective fading MIMO channels is also proposed and analyzed.
The new Beam-Selective Transmit Diversity (BSTD) can be seen as a composite scheme where the MAI reduction is performed jointly with the exploration of transmit diversity, without additional Mobile Station (MS) complexity.
It is shown that, in most conditions, the pre-processing scheme for MIMO channels tends to achieve the best performance in most scenarios, being followed by the BSTD which allows interference cancellation and provides diversity. Both schemes tend to lead to good performances and capacities, facing the requirements of the emergent cellular communication systems. Depending on the complexity and size constraints imposed to the MS, the present thesis suggests the scheme that should be selected to allow such improvements

▼ This thesis discusses microstrip circuits and components with a slotted area on the ground plane. In recent years, various slot geometries have been placed on the ground plane with the purpose of reducing harmonics, producing frequency pass/stop-bands, and enhancing coupling effects. Among several ground slot geometries, a dumbbell shaped slot (DSS) is attractive because of its simple structure and easy analysis. The DSS and its applications to RF/microwave filters are studied and discussed. A lumped equivalent circuit model of the dumbbell shaped ground slot is introduced by utilizing resonator and filter theories. The accuracy of the equivalent circuit model is demonstrated through the comparison of circuit simulations and measurements. A lowpass filter (LPF) using slotted ground structure (SGS) with dumbbell shape is designed and measured to validate its theories. By using SGS techniques presented in this thesis, some other RF/microwave components such as a periodic structure, ultra-
wideband bandpass filter (UWB-BPF), and rectenna with SGS-LPF are designed and tested.

▼ Wireless communication is one of the fast evolving
areas in communication field today. It is one of the most important
technologies in modern society. Ultra Wideband (UWB) radio is among
the most recently developed technologies for wireless
communications, and gains strong attention in both academia and
industries in the world these days. As the number of portable
devices grows, it is very easy to see how a short-range wireless
network could ease the life of a user by removing some or all of
these wires. The high data rates are perhaps the most compelling
aspect from a user’s point of view and also from a commercial
manufacturer’s position. The extremely large bandwidth occupied by
UWB gives this potential since the ITU has allocated frequency band
for UWB from 3.1 GHz to 10.6 GHz. In case of UWB the design of a
reception scheme is a key issue, the rake receiver might require
tens or even hundreds of fingers in some cases to capture the
available energy but in the case of UWB, traditional rake may not
work and even if it works with some modification. An alternate
approach is based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing
(OFDM) techniques where a large number of sub-bands are used. This
might be a good solution but is not an inexpensive solution either.
Another approach, namely transmitted reference (TR), initially
proposed for spread spectrum communication has regained popularity.
The TR schemes used along with correlation-based receivers are more
popularly known, as a suboptimal receiver does not require channel
estimation. Because of the cost issues and complexity issues
suboptimal reception schemes have become very
popular.

▼ Short-range wireless communications continually attract interest from both industry and academia, and it is changing our life in every aspect in the last decade. The design of wireless transceivers is the bottleneck for variety applications, due to RF modeling inaccuracy, stringent FCC regulations over the transmitted power spectrum, interference, multi-path reflections, modulation scheme, receiver sensitivity, and synchronization. In addition, energy efficiency is always one of the most important design goals. Ultra-
Wideband(UWB) is found to be very energy-efficient due to its low duty cycle and potentially high data rate due to its wide bandwidth. However, there still remain unsolved issues with UWB transceivers, such as pulse shaping, multi-path reflections, and receiver clock synchronization.
To address these, novel techniques such as wireless multi-path equalization, pulse injection-locking for receiver clock synchronization, reconfigurable pulse shaping, low power wireless clock distribution, and an ultra-low-power super-regenerative receiver are implemented and verified on silicon. Three chips are designed and verified: a 3-5GHz Impulse-Radio(IR) UWB transceiver, a 3-60GHz all digital reconfigurable transmitter, and a 402-405MHz MICS/UWB(Sub-GHz) super-regenerative receiver incorporating wireless clock synchronization. A detailed design methodology, measurement results, and discussions are presented.

▼ This thesis describes a new, innovative, wideband
antenna design which is short compared to wavelength and has an
omni-directional radiation pattern that is theta polarized. This
type of antenna is important on many devices that require a low
profile antenna design. One particular example is an Unmanned
Aerial Vehicle (UAV). To investigate this problem commercially
available programs, Feko Suite 5.1 and Microwave Studio (MWS) were
used in conjunction with a genetic algorithm(GA). Using these two
modeling software packages previously researched antenna designs
were modeled and experimental prototypes were fabricated for
verification. The new antenna design proposed is a shorted top hat
mono cone design that is tall and displays a larger bandwidth, 3:1,
than current low profile antennas found in literature. The design
was optimized using a GA and MWS. To verify the results, the
antenna was prototyped and tested. The tested results yielded a
comparison of and an antenna pattern, which matched simulated
results. Furthermore, a link budget analysis was completed
verifying that the final design performs equally well or better
than currently used UAV antennas.

▼ Recent developments in computing technology have generated a demand for more streamlined and effective test systems. By replacing traditional in-chassis wired interconnects with a broadcast wireless system, fault detection and error susceptibility will drastically improve, input/output capabilities will expand, and routing complexity will decrease. Ultra-
wideband impulse radio's (UWB-IR) characteristic multipath-immunity and free-licensed spectrum makes it ideal for use in this scenario. Understanding the unique and complex communications channel within the confines of a computer is vital to any future system implementation. A comprehensive measurement campaign is mounted with the goal of thoroughly characterizing this channel. A UWB channel model specifying channel impulse response (CIR), path loss, and fading characteristics is derived and presented in enough detail to be used as a guide for future channel modeling endeavors. Analysis of this model provides a baseline for a proof-of-concept communications system consisting of a UWB pulser and receiver, which are implemented on printed circuit board (PCB) to decrease prototyping costs. These devices are then implemented within the channel of interest to find a UWB pulse response. The pulse response measurement is a simple experiment which takes into account the pulse distortion and delay spread shortening effects of UWB antennas and in-channel radiating interference, which are not apparent in the traditional channel model. The comprehensive model is then used to determine any issues that may arise during the conversion from wired to wireless interconnects among a computer's integrated circuits (IC).

▼ Differential RF front-end components provide greater
immunity to ground noise and distortion by suppressing external
interference. Recent advancements in differential RF front-end
components offer high dynamic range, high input linearity, and low
noise in the transceiver chain. However, differential phased arrays
are not inherently ultra-

wideband
differentially fed array, a novel approach is introduced by
building on the well-established UWB Tightly Coupled Dipole Array
(TCDA). This differential TCDA (D-TCDA) is proposed for S-Ku band
(3-18 GHz) communications with emphasis on dual-linear polarization
and wide-angle scanning. The array achieves 6:1 bandwidth for VSWR
< 3 at broadside with scanning down to 45° from boresight in the
E and H planes. It also exhibits very high polarization purity of
55 dB and port to port isolation exceeding 60 dB. Array simulations
are verified with measured results of a similar 8×8

Wideband Class-B power amplifier is required in Modern communication systems. The bandwidth limitation of Class-B Power amplifier is generally caused by the narrow band 2nd harmonic short. In this thesis the methods of 2nd harmonic manipulation in Class-B power amplifier are discussed.
In the beginning, the current and voltage waveforms at output of the amplifier are analyzed, and a series of load configurations which can give good performance in Class-B power amplifier is given.
In single-ended topology the traditional 2nd harmonic short networks are band limited and interaction between fundamental impedance and 2nd harmonic impedance limited the performance of short networks. Introducing varactors into the short networks the bandwidth of amplifier is extended. Performance of commercial varactor is restricted by the breakdown voltage and package parasitic. A 32% relative bandwidth Class-B power amplifier is realized with the 90 V break down voltage varactors from the Aeroflex central frequency of the amplifier is 1 GHz, the drain efficiency is above 65% over the frequency band.
In differential topology the fundamental signal and 2nd harmonic are isolated, which provides convenience for
wideband design. In practical design the bandwidth limitation is generally caused by the non-idea transformer in fundamental matching, compensation capacitors are required at primary of transformer. In low power condition, the 2nd harmonic short bandwidth can be extended by using the coupling between primary inductors. Two loops structure is applied in this case. In high power design, the 2nd harmonic is shorted though the large compensation capacitors. One loop structure is applied in this condition. In simulation result these structures can provide 50% to 70% relative bandwidth, which indicates their potential in
wideband Class-B design.

▼ Localization is one of the most interesting research areas in wireless networks. It is mostly used for tracking and monitoring applications such as traffic monitoring, search and rescue, navigation and so on. A good quality system can be defined from its accuracy when operating in severe interference environments that contaminate the signals and therefore reduce the system performance. The main issue for localization is channel propagation, e.g., line of sight or non-line of sight channel which should be studied in order to improve the system efficiency. In order to perform a localization, most algorithms use two steps: ranging and positioning. For ranging, the two popular techniques that are widely used for distance measurement are received signal strength (RSS) and time of arrival (TOA). RSS ranging technique uses the power of the received signals to identify the distance between a transmitter and a receiver. TOA ranging technique uses time of the signal traveling between a transmitter and a receiver to identify the distance, thus it requires synchronization. The measurements are processed by using a localization algorithm afterwards. However, these techniques suffer from multipath fading and other errors, so there always exists error in the estimated position. In this thesis, TOA ranging technique is used for different estimation methods. Simulation results are performed using MATLAB, while the real results are obtained from Pozyx indoor positioning platform. Several estimation algorithms comprising of maximum likelihood (ML), linearized least square (LLS), weighted centroid (WC), and fingerprinting (FP) are studied in detail. The testing area is indoor environment which is suitable for LOS, NLOS and combined situations. The measured data is then used for ranging and localization. We concentrate on comparing and discussing these results in this thesis.

wideband amplifiers suitable for base station instrumentation purposes. A power combing topology is introduced, not only to achieve high power but also good input and output matching. Two kinds of broadband 3-dB quadrature couplers, which are important components in the power combing topology, are designed and implemented. In order to reduce the cost, broadband Wilkinson dividers are designed to replace some of the 3-dB quadrature couplers in the topology. Both NXP LDMOS die and Cree GaN packaged transistors are reviewed for the

▼ Currently the Doherty Power Amplifier (DPA) is replacing the traditional Class B amplifier in base-station and broadcast applications, as such becoming the preferred choice of industry due to its simplicity and high efficiency performance. In spite of its success, so far practical DPA implementations can provide only a very limited RF bandwidth, which tends to narrow down even more at higher power levels. This narrowband behavior of the DPA is mostly caused by the use of traditional operating classes for the active devices and bandwidth restrictions related to use of a conventional impedance inverter.
In this work, the bandwidth of different DPA topologies has been analyzed, followed by a discussion of recent techniques that can help to improve the DPA bandwidth. To overcome the remaining bandwidth limitations in a DPA design, a novel differential configuration was proposed. In this approach, transmission line based baluns are used to implement the desired
wideband 2nd harmonic terminations of the active devices. By combining this technique with a novel
wideband impedance inverter, excellent DPA
wideband performance can be achieved. Unfortunately, when going to practical balun implementations, various imperfections come to light, which trouble the achievable DPA bandwidth performance. For this reason, three practical balun structures are investigated in detail, namely, the coaxial cable based balun, the vertically installed planar balun and suspended planar stripline balun. To explore the proposed DPA concept when using practical baluns, two DPAs featuring mixed-signal driven inputs are presented. A dedicated design procedure for these DPAs is also given. The first prototype is implemented using NXP GaN devices and coaxial cable based baluns. Simulation results show a maximum output power of 52dBm, but in 6dB power back-off we only reach 40% efficiency from 530MHz to 700MHz, which is significantly less than the intend bandwidth (450MHz-810MHz). Using the lessons learned of this first amplifier, a second design with NXP LDMOS devices and suspended planar stripline balun has been developed. According to simulation this later design provides a maximum output power of 59dBm with the efficiency above 55% at both full power and 6dB power back-off. According the simulations this second design can even achieve 50% efficiency at 8dB back-off. The related center frequency is 650MHz with a high-efficiency bandwidth at 6dB power back-off (efficiency within 10% of its maximum) from 460MHz to 790MHz.

▼ Reducing power consumption of radio receivers is becoming more critical with the advancement of biomedical portable and implantable devices due to the stringent power requirements in such applications. Compressive sensing promises to tremendously reduce the power of radio receivers by allowing the reconstruction of sparse signals from measurements acquired at a sub-Nyquist rate. A key component in compressive sensing systems is the random signal which is used to acquire the measurements. Most e orts have been devoted to the design of signals with high randomness but little have been devoted to manipulating the random signal to suite a speci fic application, meet certain specifi cations, or enhance the performance of the system. This thesis tackles compressive sensing systems from this angle. We first
propose an architecture that alleviates a critical requirement in compressive sensing: that the random signal should run at the Nyquist rate, which becomes prohibitive as the signal bandwidth increases. We provide theoretical and experimental results that demonstrate the e ectiveness of the proposed architecture. Secondly, we propose a framework for manipulating the random signal in the frequency domain as suitable for speci c applications. We use the framework to develop an architecture for recon gurable ultra wide-band radios.

▼ peer-reviewed
UltraWideband is a high-speed, short-range and low-power wireless technology. UWB
system is overlapped with wireless systems such as WLAN, WiMax and UMTS, which
limits the use of UWB. Cognitive radio technology enables the UWB system to efficiently
use the overlapped spectrum without causing interference to other wireless systems.
The thesis focuses on the design of the cognitive radio resource allocation algorithms
for spectrum efficiency maximization in the multiband OFDM UWB system. The spectrum
efficiency of a cognitive UWB system depends on the cognitive algorithms used in
spectrum sensing, spectrum sharing and spectrum management. The spectrum efficiency
maximization problem is formulated to a multi-dimensional knapsack problem with constraints
in the transmit power of the UWB subcarriers, the average bit error rate and the
interference to the primary users. New cognitive algorithms for spectrum sensing and
spectrum management are developed to solve the optimization problem. The proposed
low-complexity cognitive algorithms include: primary and advanced power allocation algorithm,
group power allocation algorithm and spectrum sensing time optimization algorithm.
In a cognitive UWB system, the primary and advanced power allocation algorithm
as well as the group power allocation algorithm are used for spectrum management, while
spectrum sensing time optimization algorithm is used for spectrum sensing.
The spectrum sensing time optimization algorithm computes the optimal spectrum
sensing period which maximizes the cognitive UWB system’s data transmission period
while guaranteeing a target probability of detection/false-alarm. During the data transmission
period, the primary and advanced power allocation algorithm achieves the optimal
spectrum efficiency by equally allocating the transmit power and distributing the
excessively allocated power to the subcarriers in a greedy manner. Also, the group power
allocation algorithm can obtain the optimal spectrum efficiency by adaptively assigning
the transmit power to the subcarrier groups according to the effective signal-to-noise ratio
of each subcarrier group whose bandwidth is less than the coherence bandwidth of the

▼ A conventional RF power amplifier will convert the low powered radio frequency signals into high powered signals. Along with the expected ability to increase the communication distance, data transfer rates, RF power amplifiers also have many applications which include military radar system, whether forecasting, etc. The main objective of any power amplifier research is to increase the efficiency while maintaining linearity and broadening the frequency of operation. The main motivation for the renewed interest in PA technology comes from the technical challenges and the economics of modern digital communication systems. Modern communications require high linear power amplifiers and in order to reduce the complete system cost, it is necessary to have a single broadband power amplifier, which can amplify multiple carriers. The improvement in the efficiency of the power amplifier increases the battery life and also reduces the cooling requirements for the same output power. In this thesis, I aim to design and build a
wideband class J power amplifier suitable for modern communications. For
wideband operation of the GaN technology PA, a bandwidth extension design method is studied and implemented. The simulation results are proved to have a good argument with the theoretical calculations.

▼ Bioengineering is increasingly becoming a cutting edge field of technology thatcombines the state-of-the art in nano technology, microelectronics, wide bandwidth communications, etc. The devices used in bioengineering such as Implantable Medical Devices (IMD)s create a wide variety of new territories for improving quality of life. As these IMDs progressively evolve, boosted by the notable advances in microelectronics and wireless technologies along with the strong demand for precise diagnosis and monitoring of patients, the role of biotelemetry that can wirelessly communicate biological or physiological data from the IMDs is becoming crucially important. In particular, there has been a steady increase in the demand for high data rate transmission in wireless biotelemetry systems with medium to long operation range during the last decade to enable ubiquitous medical services with high precision in diagnosis. The current state-of-the art in biotelemetric systems fall far short of the requirements, however, in terms of data rate and operation range, potentially leading to a faulty diagnosis and resulting severe consequences. Moreover, the relatively large area and high power consumption (tens order of nJ per bit) of conventional transceiver architectures make them even more unfavorable for biomedical applications. The major challenge of the research presented in this thesis is the design of a bi-directional wireless biotelemetry system, for real-time diagnosis characterised by high data rate, low area, low power dissipation, and with a reasonable operating range to take advantage of the benefits of the wireless connection. To cope with these requirements, in this work, to the best of the author's knowledge Ultra-
Wideband (UWB) technology is employed for the first time in biotelemetry applications. The UWB approach has inherent strengths due to the impulse transmission nature of the digital baseband signal. These strengths include substantial reductions in hardware complexity and power dissipation without comprising data rates, making UWB highly suitable candidate for biotelemetry applications. In this research work, the focus is on wireless capsule endoscope applications that can transmit medical images with the highest data rate required in biotelemetry systems. The target data rate is 200Mbps to enable real-time transmission of VGA quality high resolution medical images. The optimum architecture in in-vivo applications is proposed as a Differential Transmit Reference (DTR) UWB transceiver that is derived from thorough system modelling and simulations including digital baseband synchronisation. An all digital tunable Pulse Generator (PG) based transmitter to be located inside the capsule is also proposed and implemented in a 0.18um standard Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) process. This transmitter achieved impressive results; realising a data rate of 200Mbps with the low power consumption of 27pJ per pulse and the small area of 0.0126mm2 making it optimum for target application of a battery powered device…

▼ A new Ultra-
Wideband (UWB) pattern diversity antenna is proposed, designed and investigated in this thesis. The antenna is capable of radiating in directive and omni-directional modes. Three different versions of the design are studied to show the performance for different applications. The first design consists of a single radiating element fed from two sides by coaxial probes over a shaped ground plane. In-phase excitation of the ports produces omni-directional radiation patterns and out-of-phase excitation results in directive radiation in the boresight of the antenna. The shape of the radiator is a disk, which is modified in geometry to improve the isolation of the ports. The antenna shows impedance bandwidth from 6.8 GHz to more than 15 GHz. The second design is a dual-element version of the same antenna to equalize the radiation patterns in the E- and H-planes. The antenna requires four ports and has an impedance bandwidth from 7.4 GHz to more than 15 GHz. A microstrip power divider is then included, in the third design, which in addition to decreasing the number of extra circuits for feeding, decreases the lower frequency to 4.5 GHz, without changing the radiation patterns significantly throughout the bandwidth. A prototype of this antenna was fabricated and measured, and the results are presented. In the fifth chapter, an electromagnetic polarization filter is designed for the single element UWB antenna, to reduce the cross-polarization level. 7 dB reduction in the maximum level of cross-polarization is achieved, throughout the frequency band 8 - 11 GHz. The following chapter is dedicated to the study and performance of the microstrip-fed UWB antenna, when used as a feed for prime-focus reflectors. It is shown that the designed antenna is capable of feeding the reflector with efficiency as high as 75%, and more than 60%, over a wide bandwidth of 5.5 - 9 GHz.

UWB-tekniikan suurin haaste on standardien puute.
Lopuksi pohditaan vielä UWB-tekniikan sovelluskohteita, mahdollisuuksia ja tulevaisuutta.; The purpose of this thesis was to explore Ultra Wideband technology and its future and possibilities.
Ultra Wideband, also known as UWB, is a wireless radio technology of which advantages are a very high data transfer rate at short range and small power consumption. UWB operates in wireless personal area network (WPAN) and it is exceptional in connecting consumer electronics and in transferring multimedia. It can also be used as an indoor alternative to Global Positioning System (GPS).
Unlike conventional radio technologies, which operate within a relatively narrow bandwidth, the UWB operates across a wide range of the frequency spectrum using low transmit power. Because of the low power it is said that UWB signal is hiding in the noise floor of the spectrum and hence not interfering with the traditional radio systems that operate on the same spectrum. The biggest challenge for Ultra Wideband technology is the absence of standards. If global rules were achieved, UWB would have countless application possibilities.
At the beginning the work describes briefly the history of Ultra Wideband. After that the technology itself is explored with its advantages and challenges compared to conventional radio technologies. First there is an overview of the features of the UWB followed by signal specifications, radio frequency spectrum limitations and power restrictions. Next the theory of operation, implementation and antenna requirements are covered. Finally thesis takes a look at the applications, possibilities and…

▼ With the increasing density of communications systems in the wireless spectrum, the ability for two communications systems to share the same frequency space will become critical. To accommodate this, it becomes necessary to understand the nature of impairments introduced when two systems share the same spectrum. Traditionally, the performance of a communication system is analyzed in the presence of random interfering noise (Gaussian, Rayleigh, etc.), specific channel impairments like multipath or fading, or narrowband interferers. This work will focus solely on the wideband interference of one communication system on another. Wireless communications systems are increasingly bifurcating along two primary paths: OFDM and Spread Spectrum. This thesis will analyze three parameters of an OFDM system to understand their impact on a forward-path, single-transmitter DSSS system, both analytically and empirically. Ultimately, the effect of these parameters on probability of error and a method to reject the interference of each system on the other will be presented.

▼ For over twenty years, global navigation satellite systems like GPS have provided an invaluable navigation, tracking, and time synchronization service that is used by people, wildlife, and machinery. Unfortunately, the coverage and accuracy of GPS is diminished or lost when brought indoors since GPS signals experience attenuation and distortion after passing through and reflecting off of building materials. This disparity in coverage coupled with growing demands for indoor positioning, navigation, and tracking has led to a plethora of research in localization technologies. To date, however, no single system has emerged as a clear solution to the indoor localization and navigation problem because the myriad of potential applications have widely varying performance requirements and design constraints that no system satisfies. Fortunately, recently-introduced commercial ultra-
wideband RF hardware offers excellent ranging accuracy in difficult indoor settings, but these systems lack the robustness and simplicity needed for many indoor applications. We claim that an asymmetric design that separates transmit and receive functions can enable many of the envisioned applications not currently realizable with an integrated design. This separation of functionality allows for a flexible architecture which is more robust to the in-band interference and heavy multipath commonly found in indoor environments.
In this dissertation, we explore the size, weight, accuracy, and power requirements imposed on tracked objects (tags) for three broadly representative applications and propose the design of fixed-location infrastructure (anchors) that accurately and robustly estimate a tag’s location, while minimizing deployment complexity and adhering to a unified system architecture. Enabled applications range from 3D tracking of small, fast-moving micro-quadrotors to 2D personal navigation across indoor maps to tracking objects that remain stationary for long periods of time with near-zero energy cost. Each application requires careful measurement of the ultra-
wideband channel impulse response, and an augmented narrowband receiver is proposed to perform these measurements. The key design principle is to offload implementation complexity to static infrastructure where an increase in cost and complexity can be more easily absorbed and amortized. Finally, with an eye towards the future, we explore how the increasingly crowded RF spectrum impacts current ultra-
wideband system design, and propose an alternative architecture that enables improved coexistence of narrowband and ultra-
wideband transmissions.

▼ The objective of this research is to design well-tuned,
wideband elements for thin planar or cylindrically conformal arrays of balanced elements fed over ground. These arrays have closely spaced elements to achieve wide bandwidths through mutual coupling. This dissertation develops two
wideband designs in infinite, semi-infinite, and finite array configurations. The infinite array is best for element tuning. This research advances a concept of a distributed, parallel capacitance between elements and across feeds that must be mutually altered for tuning.
Semi-infinite techniques limit the problem space and determine the proper resistive loads to control the low-frequency array-guided surface wave (AGSW). The tight physical placement also forms a periodic structure that, along with the array boundary, launches a wave across the array surface. Options to suppress this surface wave are resistive loading and cylindrical conformations. AGSW control is necessary to achieve a maximum bandwidth, but lower radiation or aperture efficiency results. Conformation is shown to be an ineffective method for AGSW control alone.
The Wrapped Bowtie design emerges as a novel design offering nearly a 10:1 bandwidth as a finite array over ground. Some bandwidth comes from the losses in radiation efficiency, which is necessary to control the AGSW; however, its simulated VSWR < 3 bandwidth in an infinite array is 7.24:1 with full efficiency. Less than perfect efficiency is required to mitigate surface wave effects, unless bandwidth is to be compromised. That loss may be as radiation or aperture efficiency, but it is unavoidable if the infinite array bandwidth is to be maintained in finite array designs.
Lastly, this research articulates a development path for tightly-coupled arrays that extends in stages from infinite to semi-infinite, and thence finite layouts. Distinctions are explained and defended for the design focus at each stage. Element design, tuning, and initial feed design occur at the infinite array stage; AGSW suppression occurs at the semi-infinite stage; and design confirmation occurs only with the finite array.

This thesis deals with the realisation of a frequency transposition block from 1 to 20 GHz based on MEMS components. It results in the design and fabrication of a new kind of tuneable RF MEMS capacitor based on a rotational gyroscope structure for the actuation part and on a surface variation for the capacitance change. Compared to other architectures published, this structure presents the advantage to have an actuation part (the MEMS part) and a RF part (the capacitor) that are electrically separated in order to avoid the phenomenon of self-actuation with RF signal crossing power. Another advantage of this structure is the possibility to simultaneously tune 8 different capacitors on a single chip, with only one actuation system. The fabrication of the chips requires the use of a SOI wafer for the MEMS part and a glass wafer for the RF part, which offers on chip packaging opportunity. This work also focused on the study of the pull-in effect in the case of curved comb-drives, highlighting the most critical physical parameters for the design. This parametric study has been used to improve the actuation structure and more particularly the topology of the curved comb-drives by variation of the finger width and gap. These modifications were done in order to push the pull-in…

▼ The objectives of this work are to review, investigate and model the microwave planar filters of the modern wireless communication system. The recent main stream of microwave filters are classified and discussed separately. Various microwave filters with detailed applications are investigated in terms of their geometrical structures and operational performances. A comprehensive theoretical study of microwave filters is presented. The main types of microwave filters including the basic low-pass filters such as Butterworth and Chebyshev filters are fully analysed and described in detail. The transformation from low-pass prototype filters to high-pass filters, band-pass filters and band-stop filters are illustrated and introduced. Research work on stepped impedance resonator (SIR) and asymmetric stepped impedance resonator (ASIR) structure is presented. The characteristics of λg/4, λg/2 and λg (λg is the guided wavelength of the fundamental frequency in the free space) type SIR resonators, and the characteristic of asymmetric SIR resonator are categorized and investigated. Based on the content mentioned above, novel multi-standard high performance asymmetric stepped impedance resonator single-wideband and dual-wideband filters with wide stopbands are proposed. The methodologies to realize wide passband and wide stop-band filters are detailed. In addition, multi-standard high performance triplewideband, quadruple-wideband and quint-wideband filters are suggested and studied. The measurement results for all prototype filters agree well with the theoretical predictions and simulated results from Ansoft HFSS software. The featured broad bandwidths over single/multiple applicable frequency bands and the high performances of the proposed filters make them very promising for applications in future multistandard wireless communication.

▼ Recent days, antennas play an important role in wireless communication system. Microstrip
patch antennas are well known to have positive features for cost-effective, low profile and
broadband. This type of antenna can be used in wide range of applications such as in wireless
communications, radar systems, and satellites. Inhibiting characteristics of single patch antenna
with low gain and narrow band leads to the research area to have array configuration. Beam
steering antennas are the ideal solution for various systems such as traffic control and collision
avoidance radar systems.
The goal of this work is to design and implement a dual-linear polarization stacked microstrip
patch phased array antenna. Single stacked microstrip patch antenna fed by microstrip line was
designed to have approximately 3 GHz bandwidth in X-band with another ground plane to form
a stripline-fed. Stripline-fed design protects feed lines from any outside effects. The array
configuration was adapted to design in order to accomplish beam scan angle of /- 30 degrees by /- 15 degrees.
Binomial power distribution of 3x2 array structure was used in order to reduce grating lobes, and
changing length of feed lines was implemented for phase shifting. Bowtie cross shape aperture
and dual-offset microstrip feedline was used to feed radiating patches. For the feed network, T-split power divider was implemented and optimized to achieve low loss. The length of microstrip
line was adjusted to meet desired phase shift that in
wideband application, the length of the line
had to be long enough to have similar wavelength response over broad frequency range. The
antenna array was designed using standard equations and simulated by electromagnetic analysis
software called Zealand's IE3D which is method-of-moments based simulator. The resulting
measured impedance bandwidth and gain of both microstrip and stripline-fed single antenna are
43 percent and 5 to 10 dBi with low cross polarizations for all frequencies. The array antenna was
measured to have 29 to 60 percent impedance bandwidths depending on the different types of beam
scan angles. The gain of the array antenna is 8 to 13 dBi, and the beams are directed as required
with /- 3 degrees beam scan angle tolerance. The array antenna had a small offset as compared with
simulated results because of the fabrication process such as alignment, distorted feed lines while
etching, and etc, but the bandwidths and array patterns were acceptable.

▼ In this thesis a vehicle tracking problem using an ultra-
wideband radar sensor is considered. Prior research is heavily focused on specific applications, such as highway driving, where tracked-vehicle motion is confined and limited. The target application of this thesis is one of low speed but high variability in tracked-vehicle’s entry and exit points. After analysis of common nonlinear estimation techniques, and with the target application in mind, the tracker is developed within a Particle Filter framework. Given the cluttered nature of the radar-sensor data, pruning and gating methods are formulated for use in the measurement update procedure. Considering the quality and separation of vehicle data points within the radar-sensor data, a simple data association step is developed that facilitates the tracking of multiple vehicles simultaneously and independently. The system is extended to a moving platform via developed mappings from the radar frame-of-reference to an inertial frame, and vice versa. An Extended Kalman Filter is developed to estimate the platform’s state from limited, noisy sensor measurements. The results show that the developed system is successful in detecting and tracking single and multiple vehicles when using real-world data from the radar sensor. The Extended Kalman Filter is also shown to provide a suitable state estimate when using real-world data. Testing of the two systems jointly is advised for future research.

▼ Recently, the concept of MIMO communications has created considerable attention both in mobile communications and advanced radar technology. In MIMO radar technology, the antenna should be capable of operating in
wideband and high gain. In this thesis, we design a C-Band MIMO antenna for MIMO radar applications by introducing reaction theorem to enhance
wideband isolation, and adding superstrates with special designs to improve gain enhancement.
First, we propose coplanar waveguide (CPW) to feed multi-input multi-output (MIMO) antenna. We choose CPW feeding because it provides the advantage of
wideband impedance matching. Our antenna structure is similar to protruding structure, which provides isolation enhancement. In order to further improve the isolation over the desired frequency band, the reaction theorem is applied. By introducing equivalent magnetic current, the induced voltage can be suppressed. So that
wideband MIMO antenna design can be done.
In order to enhance the gain over C-band, three stacked superstrates are proposed. By analyzing the electric field on the xz, yz plane of the antenna, we create a metal strip on the corresponding location on the superstrate to enhance gain. Compared with common superstrate, three stacked superstrates are placed only at a distance of 0.25λ, with a gain enhancement of 1~3 dB.

▼ This paper proposes a novel means of using analog correlators to improve upon
existing Ultra-
Wideband receiver architectures. Current architectures aim for an
all-digital design for the sake of ease of implementation and conceptual
simplicity. This causes some notable design challenges including an ultra-high
sampling rate, and difficulty capturing multipath energy. The architecture
outlined here, seeks to bypass some of these challenges and trade-offs by using a
receiver designed around a core of analog correlators. Although this design
abandons the conceptual simplicity of an all-digital system, it holds promise of
being able to improve upon the energy collection performance of existing Ultrawideband
receiver designs.
