▼ In 2002 the Federal Communications Commission of
the United State officially released the regulation for Ultra
wideband technology In this regulation, the spectrum from 3 1 GHz
to 106 GHz is allocated to the unlicensed indoor UWB communication
systems According to this regulation UWB technology which is based
on transmitting ultra short newlinepulses with duration of only a
few nanoseconds or less has recently received great attention in
various fields for the short distance wireless communications
Because of the ultra wideband property UWB technology has many
benefits, which are high data rate low power consumption
compactness low cost excellent immunity to multipath interference
and reduced hardware complexity Due to these advantages a need
arises to design and develop an antenna for UWB applications A
competent UWB antenna should be capable of operating over an ultra
wide bandwidth as assigned by the FCC But over the allocated UWB
frequency range there exist 5 GHz Wireless Local Area Network bands
which may interfere with the ultra wideband Therefore an antenna
with band notched function for 5 GHz WLAN is highly desirable to
overcome this difficulty Nowadays it is often necessary to design
an antenna which can be used for multifunctional wireless
communication systems such as 2 4 GHz WLAN and UWB
newlinecommunications Another key requirement of this antenna is of
the good time newlinedomain behavior i e a good impulse response
with minimal distortion newline newline

▼ An array antenna consists of a group of radiating
elements forming a single aperture to transmit and receive
electromagnetic energy. This work focuses on the analysis,
development, and design of array antennas geared towards operation
over wide frequency bandwidths. As a consequence of the present
effort, both the geometry and the operation theory of a louver
array antenna are developed, and their use in wide-band antenna
arrays investigated.; This dissertation begins by first
establishing the electromagnetic boundary condition associated with
the radiating aperture of an antenna array made of identical cells.
Then, it proceeds to impose this condition on Maxwell's equations
to yield the array radiated field as an infinite plane wave
spectrum.; To properly investigate the energy transfer efficiency
of an array, from circuit to free space, the Poynting theorem is
used to determine the power balance equation of the antenna. From
this analysis, an aperture reflection coefficient is defined and
introduced as a convenient figure-of-merit to gauge the
effectiveness of the antenna as an energy transducer. For
demonstration purposes, this aperture reflection coefficient is
then applied to study the characteristics of the frequently used
rectangular microstrip patch array. It is shown that the patch
array geometry is prone to excite evanescent fields (i.e., store
reactive energy) in its aperture region, causing it to require a
highly reactive, and therefore narrow band, matching network behind
each element to ensure proper operation. In contrast, the louver
array primarily excites a dominant mode field that exactly emulates
the desired radiated plane wave, with nearly no evanescent field
generation. Since a band-limiting matching structure is not
required (to compensate evanescent fields), the louver antenna is
inherently
wideband. In addition to this fact, the louver antenna
is amenable to be integrated directly with semiconductor
electronics. This feature allows the future implementation of a
densely populated array antenna with fractional wavelength element
spacing to enable broad band, wide angle, grating-lobe-free beam
scan.; Even though no experimental work was performed for this
research, a systematic array design and analysis procedure is
presented at the end of this dissertation. To demonstrate their
application, a louver array antenna is then designed for a 30-to-1
operation frequency band. As a preliminary validation, this louver
array is then modeled using an established commercial
finite-element numerical analysis software. Both the analytically
and the numerically predicted array performances obtained show
close agreement. This validates the design and analysis procedures
presented, as well as demonstrate their applicability for
implementing high efficiency,
wideband, wide scan angle array
antennas.

▼ Short-range wireless communications continually attract interest from both industry and academia, and it is changing our life in every aspect in the last decade. The design of wireless transceivers is the bottleneck for variety applications, due to RF modeling inaccuracy, stringent FCC regulations over the transmitted power spectrum, interference, multi-path reflections, modulation scheme, receiver sensitivity, and synchronization. In addition, energy efficiency is always one of the most important design goals. Ultra-
Wideband(UWB) is found to be very energy-efficient due to its low duty cycle and potentially high data rate due to its wide bandwidth. However, there still remain unsolved issues with UWB transceivers, such as pulse shaping, multi-path reflections, and receiver clock synchronization.
To address these, novel techniques such as wireless multi-path equalization, pulse injection-locking for receiver clock synchronization, reconfigurable pulse shaping, low power wireless clock distribution, and an ultra-low-power super-regenerative receiver are implemented and verified on silicon. Three chips are designed and verified: a 3-5GHz Impulse-Radio(IR) UWB transceiver, a 3-60GHz all digital reconfigurable transmitter, and a 402-405MHz MICS/UWB(Sub-GHz) super-regenerative receiver incorporating wireless clock synchronization. A detailed design methodology, measurement results, and discussions are presented.

▼ Emergent services are demanding higher data rates, especially in the downlink. Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) is the key to reach this development in cellular communications. To obtain this, it is important to find schemes able to reduce Inter-Path Interference (IPI) and Multiple Access Interference (MAI), and to explore new types of diversity. These are the objectives of the present thesis.
Interference cancellation subject considers post-processing and pre-processing schemes. A new linear Multi-User Detector (MUD) is proposed and analyzed. As pre-processing schemes, the new Pre-distortion and the Precoder schemes are studied and analyzed.
New types of diversity are also presented and analyzed. A new post-processing detector for the Vertical Bell Laboratories Layered Space-Time (V-BLAST) Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) scheme, optimized for WCDMA signals subject to frequency selective fading, is proposed and analyzed. Moreover, a new frequency domain pre-processing scheme for frequency-selective fading MIMO channels is also proposed and analyzed.
The new Beam-Selective Transmit Diversity (BSTD) can be seen as a composite scheme where the MAI reduction is performed jointly with the exploration of transmit diversity, without additional Mobile Station (MS) complexity.
It is shown that, in most conditions, the pre-processing scheme for MIMO channels tends to achieve the best performance in most scenarios, being followed by the BSTD which allows interference cancellation and provides diversity. Both schemes tend to lead to good performances and capacities, facing the requirements of the emergent cellular communication systems. Depending on the complexity and size constraints imposed to the MS, the present thesis suggests the scheme that should be selected to allow such improvements

▼ Wireless communication is one of the fast evolving
areas in communication field today. It is one of the most important
technologies in modern society. Ultra Wideband (UWB) radio is among
the most recently developed technologies for wireless
communications, and gains strong attention in both academia and
industries in the world these days. As the number of portable
devices grows, it is very easy to see how a short-range wireless
network could ease the life of a user by removing some or all of
these wires. The high data rates are perhaps the most compelling
aspect from a user’s point of view and also from a commercial
manufacturer’s position. The extremely large bandwidth occupied by
UWB gives this potential since the ITU has allocated frequency band
for UWB from 3.1 GHz to 10.6 GHz. In case of UWB the design of a
reception scheme is a key issue, the rake receiver might require
tens or even hundreds of fingers in some cases to capture the
available energy but in the case of UWB, traditional rake may not
work and even if it works with some modification. An alternate
approach is based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing
(OFDM) techniques where a large number of sub-bands are used. This
might be a good solution but is not an inexpensive solution either.
Another approach, namely transmitted reference (TR), initially
proposed for spread spectrum communication has regained popularity.
The TR schemes used along with correlation-based receivers are more
popularly known, as a suboptimal receiver does not require channel
estimation. Because of the cost issues and complexity issues
suboptimal reception schemes have become very
popular.

▼ Recent developments in computing technology have generated a demand for more streamlined and effective test systems. By replacing traditional in-chassis wired interconnects with a broadcast wireless system, fault detection and error susceptibility will drastically improve, input/output capabilities will expand, and routing complexity will decrease. Ultra-
wideband impulse radio's (UWB-IR) characteristic multipath-immunity and free-licensed spectrum makes it ideal for use in this scenario. Understanding the unique and complex communications channel within the confines of a computer is vital to any future system implementation. A comprehensive measurement campaign is mounted with the goal of thoroughly characterizing this channel. A UWB channel model specifying channel impulse response (CIR), path loss, and fading characteristics is derived and presented in enough detail to be used as a guide for future channel modeling endeavors. Analysis of this model provides a baseline for a proof-of-concept communications system consisting of a UWB pulser and receiver, which are implemented on printed circuit board (PCB) to decrease prototyping costs. These devices are then implemented within the channel of interest to find a UWB pulse response. The pulse response measurement is a simple experiment which takes into account the pulse distortion and delay spread shortening effects of UWB antennas and in-channel radiating interference, which are not apparent in the traditional channel model. The comprehensive model is then used to determine any issues that may arise during the conversion from wired to wireless interconnects among a computer's integrated circuits (IC).

▼ A new Ultra-
Wideband (UWB) pattern diversity antenna is proposed, designed and investigated in this thesis. The antenna is capable of radiating in directive and omni-directional modes. Three different versions of the design are studied to show the performance for different applications. The first design consists of a single radiating element fed from two sides by coaxial probes over a shaped ground plane. In-phase excitation of the ports produces omni-directional radiation patterns and out-of-phase excitation results in directive radiation in the boresight of the antenna. The shape of the radiator is a disk, which is modified in geometry to improve the isolation of the ports. The antenna shows impedance bandwidth from 6.8 GHz to more than 15 GHz. The second design is a dual-element version of the same antenna to equalize the radiation patterns in the E- and H-planes. The antenna requires four ports and has an impedance bandwidth from 7.4 GHz to more than 15 GHz. A microstrip power divider is then included, in the third design, which in addition to decreasing the number of extra circuits for feeding, decreases the lower frequency to 4.5 GHz, without changing the radiation patterns significantly throughout the bandwidth. A prototype of this antenna was fabricated and measured, and the results are presented. In the fifth chapter, an electromagnetic polarization filter is designed for the single element UWB antenna, to reduce the cross-polarization level. 7 dB reduction in the maximum level of cross-polarization is achieved, throughout the frequency band 8 - 11 GHz. The following chapter is dedicated to the study and performance of the microstrip-fed UWB antenna, when used as a feed for prime-focus reflectors. It is shown that the designed antenna is capable of feeding the reflector with efficiency as high as 75%, and more than 60%, over a wide bandwidth of 5.5 - 9 GHz.

▼ Reducing power consumption of radio receivers is becoming more critical with the advancement of biomedical portable and implantable devices due to the stringent power requirements in such applications. Compressive sensing promises to tremendously reduce the power of radio receivers by allowing the reconstruction of sparse signals from measurements acquired at a sub-Nyquist rate. A key component in compressive sensing systems is the random signal which is used to acquire the measurements. Most e orts have been devoted to the design of signals with high randomness but little have been devoted to manipulating the random signal to suite a speci fic application, meet certain specifi cations, or enhance the performance of the system. This thesis tackles compressive sensing systems from this angle. We first
propose an architecture that alleviates a critical requirement in compressive sensing: that the random signal should run at the Nyquist rate, which becomes prohibitive as the signal bandwidth increases. We provide theoretical and experimental results that demonstrate the e ectiveness of the proposed architecture. Secondly, we propose a framework for manipulating the random signal in the frequency domain as suitable for speci c applications. We use the framework to develop an architecture for recon gurable ultra wide-band radios.

▼ Currently the Doherty Power Amplifier (DPA) is replacing the traditional Class B amplifier in base-station and broadcast applications, as such becoming the preferred choice of industry due to its simplicity and high efficiency performance. In spite of its success, so far practical DPA implementations can provide only a very limited RF bandwidth, which tends to narrow down even more at higher power levels. This narrowband behavior of the DPA is mostly caused by the use of traditional operating classes for the active devices and bandwidth restrictions related to use of a conventional impedance inverter. In this work, the bandwidth of different DPA topologies has been analyzed, followed by a discussion of recent techniques that can help to improve the DPA bandwidth. To overcome the remaining bandwidth limitations in a DPA design, a novel differential configuration was proposed. In this approach, transmission line based baluns are used to implement the desired wideband 2nd harmonic terminations of the active devices. By combining this technique with a novel wideband impedance inverter, excellent DPA wideband performance can be achieved. Unfortunately, when going to practical balun implementations, various imperfections come to light, which trouble the achievable DPA bandwidth performance. For this reason, three practical balun structures are investigated in detail, namely, the coaxial cable based balun, the vertically installed planar balun and suspended planar stripline balun. To explore the proposed DPA concept when using practical baluns, two DPAs featuring mixed-signal driven inputs are presented. A dedicated design procedure for these DPAs is also given. The first prototype is implemented using NXP GaN devices and coaxial cable based baluns. Simulation results show a maximum output power of 52dBm, but in 6dB power back-off we only reach 40% efficiency from 530MHz to 700MHz, which is significantly less than the intend bandwidth (450MHz-810MHz). Using the lessons learned of this first amplifier, a second design with NXP LDMOS devices and suspended planar stripline balun has been developed. According to simulation this later design provides a maximum output power of 59dBm with the efficiency above 55% at both full power and 6dB power back-off. According the simulations this second design can even achieve 50% efficiency at 8dB back-off. The related center frequency is 650MHz with a high-efficiency bandwidth at 6dB power back-off (efficiency within 10% of its maximum) from 460MHz to 790MHz.

▼ This thesis aims for high power wideband amplifiers suitable for base station instrumentation purposes. A power combing topology is introduced, not only to achieve high power but also good input and output matching. Two kinds of broadband 3-dB quadrature couplers, which are important components in the power combing topology, are designed and implemented. In order to reduce the cost, broadband Wilkinson dividers are designed to replace some of the 3-dB quadrature couplers in the topology. Both NXP LDMOS die and Cree GaN packaged transistors are reviewed for the wideband PA. Two bandwidth extension design methods are studied and developed within this thesis. The design using the Cree GaN packaged transistors was implemented and measured. Beside the high power wideband amplifier design, additional investigation on adaptive matching using duty-cycle control in Class-E power amplifier is presented.

UWB-tekniikan suurin haaste on standardien puute.
The purpose of this thesis was to explore Ultra Wideband technology and its future and possibilities.
Ultra Wideband, also known as UWB, is a wireless radio technology of which advantages are a very high data transfer rate at short range and small power consumption. UWB operates in wireless personal area network (WPAN) and it is exceptional in connecting consumer electronics and in transferring multimedia. It can also be used as an indoor alternative to Global Positioning System (GPS).
Unlike conventional radio technologies, which operate within a relatively narrow bandwidth, the UWB operates across a wide range of the frequency spectrum using low transmit power. Because of the low power it is said that UWB signal is hiding in the noise floor of the spectrum and hence not interfering with the traditional radio systems that operate on the same spectrum. The biggest challenge for Ultra Wideband technology is the absence of standards. If global rules were achieved, UWB would have countless application possibilities.
At the beginning the work describes briefly the history of Ultra Wideband. After that the technology itself is explored with its advantages and challenges compared to conventional radio technologies. First there is an overview of the features of the UWB followed by signal specifications, radio frequency spectrum limitations and power restrictions. Next the theory of operation, implementation and antenna requirements are covered. Finally thesis takes a look at the applications, possibilities…

▼ A conventional RF power amplifier will convert the low powered radio frequency signals into high powered signals. Along with the expected ability to increase the communication distance, data transfer rates, RF power amplifiers also have many applications which include military radar system, whether forecasting, etc. The main objective of any power amplifier research is to increase the efficiency while maintaining linearity and broadening the frequency of operation. The main motivation for the renewed interest in PA technology comes from the technical challenges and the economics of modern digital communication systems. Modern communications require high linear power amplifiers and in order to reduce the complete system cost, it is necessary to have a single broadband power amplifier, which can amplify multiple carriers. The improvement in the efficiency of the power amplifier increases the battery life and also reduces the cooling requirements for the same output power. In this thesis, I aim to design and build a
wideband class J power amplifier suitable for modern communications. For
wideband operation of the GaN technology PA, a bandwidth extension design method is studied and implemented. The simulation results are proved to have a good argument with the theoretical calculations.

UltraWideband is a high-speed, short-range and low-power wireless technology. UWB
system is overlapped with wireless systems such as WLAN, WiMax and UMTS, which
limits the use of UWB. Cognitive radio technology enables the UWB system to efficiently
use the overlapped spectrum without causing interference to other wireless systems.
The thesis focuses on the design of the cognitive radio resource allocation algorithms
for spectrum efficiency maximization in the multiband OFDM UWB system. The spectrum
efficiency of a cognitive UWB system depends on the cognitive algorithms used in
spectrum sensing, spectrum sharing and spectrum management. The spectrum efficiency
maximization problem is formulated to a multi-dimensional knapsack problem with constraints
in the transmit power of the UWB subcarriers, the average bit error rate and the
interference to the primary users. New cognitive algorithms for spectrum sensing and
spectrum management are developed to solve the optimization problem. The proposed
low-complexity cognitive algorithms include: primary and advanced power allocation algorithm,
group power allocation algorithm and spectrum sensing time optimization algorithm.
In a cognitive UWB system, the primary and advanced power allocation algorithm
as well as the group power allocation algorithm are used for spectrum management, while
spectrum sensing time optimization algorithm is used for spectrum sensing.
The spectrum sensing time optimization algorithm computes the optimal spectrum
sensing period which maximizes the cognitive UWB system’s data transmission period
while guaranteeing a target probability of detection/false-alarm. During the data transmission
period, the primary and advanced power allocation algorithm achieves the optimal
spectrum efficiency by equally allocating the transmit power and distributing the
excessively allocated power to the subcarriers in a greedy manner. Also, the group power
allocation algorithm can obtain the optimal spectrum efficiency by adaptively assigning
the transmit power to the subcarrier groups according to the effective signal-to-noise ratio
of each subcarrier group whose bandwidth is less than the coherence bandwidth of the
UWB channel. For energy-limited cognitive UWB system, the proposed cognitive algorithms
maximize the spectrum efficiency with lower order-of-growth than the traditional
dynamic radio resource allocation algorithms.

▼ Differential RF front-end components provide greater
immunity to ground noise and distortion by suppressing external
interference. Recent advancements in differential RF front-end
components offer high dynamic range, high input linearity, and low
noise in the transceiver chain. However, differential phased arrays
are not inherently ultra-

wideband
differentially fed array, a novel approach is introduced by
building on the well-established UWB Tightly Coupled Dipole Array
(TCDA). This differential TCDA (D-TCDA) is proposed for S-Ku band
(3-18 GHz) communications with emphasis on dual-linear polarization
and wide-angle scanning. The array achieves 6:1 bandwidth for VSWR

This thesis deals with the realisation of a frequency transposition block from 1 to 20 GHz based on MEMS components. It results in the design and fabrication of a new kind of tuneable RF MEMS capacitor based on a rotational gyroscope structure for the actuation part and on a surface variation for the capacitance change. Compared to other architectures published, this structure presents the advantage to have an actuation part (the MEMS part) and a RF part (the capacitor) that are electrically separated in order to avoid the phenomenon of self-actuation with RF signal crossing power. Another advantage of this structure is the possibility to simultaneously tune 8 different capacitors on a single chip, with only one actuation system. The fabrication of the chips requires the use of a SOI wafer for the MEMS part and a glass wafer for the RF part, which offers on chip packaging opportunity. This work also focused on the study of the pull-in effect in the case of curved comb-drives, highlighting the most critical physical parameters for the design. This parametric study has been used to improve the actuation structure and more particularly the topology of the curved comb-drives by variation of the finger width and gap. These modifications were done in order to push the pull-in…

▼ The objectives of this work are to review, investigate and model the microwave planar filters of the modern wireless communication system. The recent main stream of microwave filters are classified and discussed separately. Various microwave filters with detailed applications are investigated in terms of their geometrical structures and operational performances. A comprehensive theoretical study of microwave filters is presented. The main types of microwave filters including the basic low-pass filters such as Butterworth and Chebyshev filters are fully analysed and described in detail. The transformation from low-pass prototype filters to high-pass filters, band-pass filters and band-stop filters are illustrated and introduced. Research work on stepped impedance resonator (SIR) and asymmetric stepped impedance resonator (ASIR) structure is presented. The characteristics of λg/4, λg/2 and λg (λg is the guided wavelength of the fundamental frequency in the free space) type SIR resonators, and the characteristic of asymmetric SIR resonator are categorized and investigated. Based on the content mentioned above, novel multi-standard high performance asymmetric stepped impedance resonator single-wideband and dual-wideband filters with wide stopbands are proposed. The methodologies to realize wide passband and wide stop-band filters are detailed. In addition, multi-standard high performance triplewideband, quadruple-wideband and quint-wideband filters are suggested and studied. The measurement results for all prototype filters agree well with the theoretical predictions and simulated results from Ansoft HFSS software. The featured broad bandwidths over single/multiple applicable frequency bands and the high performances of the proposed filters make them very promising for applications in future multistandard wireless communication.

▼ Recently, the concept of MIMO communications has created considerable attention both in mobile communications and advanced radar technology. In MIMO radar technology, the antenna should be capable of operating in
wideband and high gain. In this thesis, we design a C-Band MIMO antenna for MIMO radar applications by introducing reaction theorem to enhance
wideband isolation, and adding superstrates with special designs to improve gain enhancement.
First, we propose coplanar waveguide (CPW) to feed multi-input multi-output (MIMO) antenna. We choose CPW feeding because it provides the advantage of
wideband impedance matching. Our antenna structure is similar to protruding structure, which provides isolation enhancement. In order to further improve the isolation over the desired frequency band, the reaction theorem is applied. By introducing equivalent magnetic current, the induced voltage can be suppressed. So that
wideband MIMO antenna design can be done.
In order to enhance the gain over C-band, three stacked superstrates are proposed. By analyzing the electric field on the xz, yz plane of the antenna, we create a metal strip on the corresponding location on the superstrate to enhance gain. Compared with common superstrate, three stacked superstrates are placed only at a distance of 0.25λ, with a gain enhancement of 1~3 dB.

▼ This paper proposes a novel means of using analog correlators to improve upon
existing Ultra-
Wideband receiver architectures. Current architectures aim for an
all-digital design for the sake of ease of implementation and conceptual
simplicity. This causes some notable design challenges including an ultra-high
sampling rate, and difficulty capturing multipath energy. The architecture
outlined here, seeks to bypass some of these challenges and trade-offs by using a
receiver designed around a core of analog correlators. Although this design
abandons the conceptual simplicity of an all-digital system, it holds promise of
being able to improve upon the energy collection performance of existing Ultrawideband
receiver designs.

▼ There has been tremendous technological advancement in the area of high-speed
indoor wireless local area networks (WLAN's) in recent years. All the existing tech-
nologies such as IEEE 802.11a,b are bandwidth limited and high powered systems. The
challenge any wireless technology faces is to minimize both the power consumption and
the cost (implementation and bandwidth). The capacity of these systems is governed
by the shannon's capacity theorem, C=Blog2 (1+SNR) where B is the available band-
width and SNR is the signal-to-noise power ratio. If the technology is not limited
by bandwidth, it is possible to achieve capacities close to the shannon's limit. Ultra-
Wideband (UWB) is a technology which spans the entire frequency spectrum (dedicated
and unlicensed). It is capable of achieving high data rates over short distances with
low power consumption. This thesis analyzes the error performance of a UWB system
with pulse position modulation (PPM) for data modulation and direct sequence (DS)
spreading for multiple access over indoor lognormal fading channels. A RAKE receiver
is used to combine a subset of the resolvable multipath components using the maximal
ratio combining technique. Inter-path and multiple access interferences are modeled and
incorporated into the bit error rate (BER) expressions. Performance of the optimally-
spaced and orthogonal signaling schemes are compared. Some effects of non-idealities in
the receiver signal processing are briefly described.

▼ The passive mixer-first architecture has been known as the most promising solution for
wideband, fully integrated software-defined radios. In this dissertation, a comprehensive model of N-phase passive mixer receivers is firstly introduced to analyze and design for optimized performance in this new type of receivers. After that, in order to suppression the out-of-band transmission problem inherent to passive mixer-first radios, a baseband technique based on DAC injection is presented. In order to meet the rising demand wireless spectrum, duplexing transicevers which is capable of receiving and transmitting simultaneously in the same or closely spaced frequency bands are required. Based on the passive mixer-first architecture, two distinct duplexing transceiver design are designed, which target different use scenarios.

▼ Silicon based complementary metallic oxide semiconductor (CMOS) and Bipolar Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (BiCMOS) radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs), including microwave and millimeter-wave (MMW), are attractive for wireless communication and sensing systems due to their small chip size and facilitation in system-on-chip integration. One of the most important RFICs is the low-noise amplifier (LNA). The design of CMOS/BiCMOS
wideband LNAs at MMW frequencies, especially those working across several decades of frequency, is challenging due to various issues. For instance, the device parasitic and inter-coupling between nearby elements in highly condensed chip areas limits the operating bandwidth and performance, and the conductive silicon substrates lead to the inevitable low quality factor of passive elements.
In this work, a MMW BiCMOS ultra-
wideband LNA across 20 to 57 GHz is presented along with the analysis, design and measurement results. To overcome the upper-band gain degradation and improve the in-band flatness, a novel frequency controlled positive-negative (P-N) feedback topology is adopted to modify the gain response by boosting the gain at the upper-band while suppressing that at the lower-band. To reduce overall power consumption, the first and second stages of the amplifier are stacked between supply voltage and DC ground to utilize the same DC current. At the output of amplifier, a shunt-peaking load stage is utilized to achieve
wideband output matching.
The designed ultra-
wideband MMW LNA is fabricated in JAZZ 0.18-μm BiCMOS technology. It shows a measured power gain of 10.5 ± 0.5 dB, a noise figure between 5.1-7.0 dB, input and output return losses better than -10 and -15 dB, respectively, an input 1 dB compression point higher than -19 dBm, and an input third-order intercept point greater than -8 dBm. It dissipates 16.6 mW from 1.8 V DC supply and has a chip area of 700×400 μm

▼ Imaging techniques have been used for a long time in many applications such as nondestructive testing, medical diagnosis, civil infrastructure assessment, and homeland security. Advances in signal and image processing techniques have made considerable progress in a way that the multi-dimensional images of the target object are successfully reconstructed from electromagnetic (EM) scattering; the shape of the object is clearly identified by visual inspection.
The dissertation explores the diffraction tomographic imaging of a target object using ultra-
wideband (UWB) white Gaussian noise (WGN) waveforms in radar system. The principles and validation of UWB noise radar system for tomography application are presented including the theoretical analysis, numerical simulations and experimental results.
Using WGN waveform as the transmit signal ensures the low probability of intercept (LPI) since the transmitted noise waveform is constantly varying and never repeats exactly. Ideally, such a signal is a stochastic process with a flat spectral density over a wide frequency range; however, the spectral density of WGN cannot be uniform and consistent for all frequencies in reality. In order to obtain a flat spectral density over the desired frequency range, a method of averaging multiple independent and identically distributed (iid) noise waveforms is proposed. From the simulation results, tomographic images of various target scenarios are successfully reconstructed with random noise waveforms.
In addition, the hardware system of bistatic UWB noise radar for tomographic imaging application is designed and implemented. The tomographic image processing technique for large sets of collected data samples are also proposed. Both metallic and dielectric target objects are correctly imaged based on measured scattering data, and the experimental results compare well with the numerical simulation results.

▼ As sources of energy are becoming more scarce and expensive, energy harvesting is receiving more global interest and is currently a growing field. Energy harvesting is the process of converting ambient energy, such as vibration, to electrical energy that can power a multitude of applications. Vibration energy is the by-product of everyday life; it is generated from any perceivable activity. While typically viewed as noise, there is a strong potential for harvesting this energy and deploying it to useful applications. The focus of this thesis will be using vibration as the ambient source of energy.
Hybrid energy harvesters employ more than one of the harvesting technologies. In this thesis, two hybrid harvesters that utilize piezoelectric, magnetostrictive, and electromagnetic technologies are designed, modelled, and tested. Both of these harvesters have beams that are spiral in shape. The use of the spiral geometry allows the system to have a lower natural frequency as opposed to the traditional cantilever beam, while still maintaining a high volume of active material.
The first harvester that is discussed is the P-MSM harvester. It utilizes piezoelectric and magnetostrictive material. Both materials are configured in a spiral beam geometry and allowed to resonate independently. The resonance frequency of these two materials is designed to create wideband energy harvesting. This allows the harvester to be operating efficiently even if the ambient vibration shifts a small amount.
The second harvester that is discussed is the P-MAG harvester. It utilizes piezoelectric and electromagnetic technologies. It also incorporates a spiral geometry for the piezoelectric layers and includes a magnet attached at the centre. The magnet is placed in the centre of the spiral to reduce the natural frequency of the system and to also actively contribute to the harvesting. This harvester has two sources operating at the same resonant frequency, which allows it to have a larger power output than if the sources were separated.
Finally, finite element analysis was used to model both harvesters. ANSYS was used for the piezoelectric material and COMSOL was used for the electromagnetic material. The results are compared to the experimental and are in good agreement.

▼ Demands for high data rate and multifunctional apertures from both civilian and military users have motivated development of ultra-
wideband (UWB) electrically steered phased arrays. Meanwhile, the need for large contiguous frequency is pushing operation of radio systems into the millimeter-wave (mm-wave) range. Therefore, modern radio systems require UWB performance from VHF to mm-wave. However, traditional electronic systems suffer many challenges that make achieving these requirements difficult. Several examples includes: voltage controlled oscillators (VCO) cannot provide a tunable range of several octaves, distribution of
wideband local oscillator signals undergo high loss and dispersion through RF transmission lines, and antennas have very limited bandwidth or bulky sizes. Recently, RF photonics technology has drawn considerable attention because of its advantages over traditional systems, with the capability of offering extreme power efficiency, information capacity, frequency agility, and spatial beam diversity. A hybrid RF photonic communication system utilizing optical links and an RF transducer at the antenna potentially provides ultra-
wideband data transmission, i.e., over 100 GHz. A successful implementation of such an optically addressed phased array requires addressing several key challenges. Photonic generation of an RF source with over a seven-octave bandwidth has been demonstrated in the last few years. However, one challenge which still remains is how to convey phased optical signals to downconversion modules and antennas. Therefore, a feed network with phase sweeping capability and low excessive phase noise needs to be developed. Another key challenge is to develop an ultra-
wideband array antenna. Modern frontends require antennas to be compact, planar, and low-profile in addition to possessing broad bandwidth, conforming to stringent space, weight, cost, and power constraints. To address these issues, I will study broadband and miniaturization techniques for both single and array antennas. In addition, a prototype transmitting phased array system is developed and shown to demonstrate large bandwidth as well as a beam steering capability. The architecture of this system can be further developed to a large-scale array at higher frequencies such as mm-wave. This solution serves as a candidate for UWB multifunctional frontends.

▼ A thesis is presented on the deployment of radar systems on ultra light unmanned aerial vehicles which are compact and lightweight. Deployment upon a small frame presents significant problems due to the size, weight and power (SWaP) requirements of components and which are addressed in this work. Traditional pulsed radar is inadequate due to these considerations and alternatively, a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar architecture is proposed. Optical systems, due to their light weight, bandwidth and resistance to interference are a possible implementation for the radar front end. Optical architecture implementations suffer from low signal to noise ratio and low spurious free dynamic range. Employment of an optical architecture for a narrow band radar would be inefficient and its performance would be substandard. Instead a focus on a wide bandwidth is pursued. The advantages of deploying a wide bandwidth, frequency agile radar are its resistance to jamming and the receiver's usefulness as a radar warning receiver. An investigation into optical systems discovers an optical architecture that is highly resistant to environmental changes making it robust, easy to maintain and inexpensive to deploy. A COTS based beam forming array is designed within the optical system. The beam former allows for multiple apertures and multiple beams, a feature previously limited to expensive, complex array architectures. The author presents a COTS based solution for optical mixing, which is both
wideband and exploits the linearity of phase modulated optical paths to provide linear mixing. The topology suffers some degradation due to the inherent environmental sensitivity of phase modulated optical fibres. The author presents a means to stabilize the output of the optical mixer, making it suitable for deployment upon an operational platform. The technique can be miniaturized as a new form of optical modulator. This optical front end can be integrated into a full, microwave to digital-at-IF radar. This breakthrough allows the use of millimeter wave carrier frequencies with low IF topologies for digital receivers. Using a low IF eliminates the problems of data overflow and Nyquist sampling limits inherent in available electronic analog to digital converters.
Wideband antennas are designed that are compact, light weight and are built from rugged materials. These antennas are simulated to show a 2 – 40+ GHz bandwidth. A series of lower bandwidth 2 -25 GHz antennas are fabricated and the parameters which enable wide bandwidth operation are investigated. The difficulty employing antennas in an array is the creation of grating lobes, through separation of the antennas. The application of medical research in ultrasound shows that an efficient beam former without grating lobes can be created by the use of two different apertures. A Vernier array of two antennas is proposed which increases the effective antenna aperture by a factor of four. A linear 8 port antenna array at the transmitter and an 8 port array at the receiver becomes a 64…

▼ Human Activity Recognition (HAR) is a fundamental building block in many Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Although there has been a lot of interest in HAR, research in non-intrusive activity recognition is still in nascent stages. This research investigates the capability of Ultra-
Wideband (UWB) communication technology to be used for HAR. In this work, UWB radio devices are placed in the periphery of a monitored area. This setup infers user activities without the need of any additional sensors or physical device. Packets are exchanged between these UWB devices, and received packets are used to obtain information of the environment. The key idea is that these received packets are affected by environmental modification due to the human activities. We collect Channel Impulse Response (CIR) data from the received packets of the UWB signals. We then use machine learning algorithms to classify the activity (standing, sitting, lying) being performed.
The experiments show that by using CIR data as features we can classify simple activities such as standing, sitting, lying and when the room is empty with an accuracy of 95%.To compare this performance, we trained classification models using Wi-Fi Channel State Information (CSI). We found that for all the models UWB CIR significantly outperformed Wi-Fi CSI in activity classification. This study also includes an application for this system. We used the HAR system for caloric expenditure estimation during a time period. We use HAR to infer the pose and time spent at each pose and use models from the literature to estimate the caloric expenditure for each pose. Our approach reports 32% more calories than what is reported by commercial devices, which are known to severely under-report calories when the subjects are not very active.

Ultra Wideband location in scenarios without clear line of sight: a practical approach

▼ [Abstract] Indoor location has experienced a major boost in recent years. location based services (LBS), which until
recently were restricted to outdoor scenarios and the use of GPS, have also been extended into buildings.
From large public structures such as airports or hospitals to a multitude of industrial scenarios, LBS has
become increasingly present in indoor scenarios.
Of the various technologies that can be used to achieve this indoor location, the ones based on ultrawideband
(UWB) signals have become ones of the most demanded due primarily to their accuracy in
position estimation. Additionally, the appearance in the market of more and more manufacturers and
products has lowered the prices of these devices to levels that allow to think about their use for large
deployments with a contained budget.
By their nature, UWB signals are very resistant to the multi-path phenomenon, so in a situation
of good direct vision between two devices (line-of-sight (LOS)) the technology is able to provide very
accurate distance estimates. This is not the case when this line of sight is totally or partially blocked
(non-line-of-sight (NLOS)). In this case the possible rebounds of the signal can be wrongly confused
with the original emitted signal and result in an estimate of time, and therefore distance, very far from
the actual value.
The aim of this thesis is to offer a complete solution to the problem of indoor location with UWB
from a practical approach. This means that the problem is approached from all the angles that should be
taken into account in a real use case: basic research in search of an improvement at technical level of the
UWB values, prior simulation to ensure a good deployment and performance and the final integration
of the solution within an external operational system that allows LBS or clients to make use of location
data.
The first part of this proposal is presented in this thesis in the first chapters, and consists of using
machine learning (ML) techniques to detect and mitigate the possible NLOS measurements generated by
low-cost UWB devices. For this task the memory describes the different measurement campaigns with
real hardware that were carried out to obtain the training data of the algorithms, and how these were used
in different experiments to measure to what extent the proposed solution was valid in a real environment.
The second part of the thesis presents data from a location-oriented UWB devices simulator created
to perform tests and detect possible problems before deploying real hardware. Among the data presented
during this second part, different comparisons between real and simulated scenarios are shown in order to
check how reliable the simulation is. In addition, the simulator is presented as part of a case commonly
used in indoor location systems: the location of vehicles in an industrial environment using multiple
sensors. Finally, the third and final part of this thesis describes a multi-technology real-time location system
(RTLS) capable of serving the…
