▼ Whale-watching tourism depends upon the continued presence of cetacean species within a specific area. However, current evidence suggests that the distribution and/or abundance of cetaceans may alter in response to continued changes in sea surface temperature with global climate change (GCC). This thesis develops and applies a framework for evaluating the resilience of whale-watching tourism to these potential temperature-induced shifts in cetacean distribution. The framework identifies three key components that are likely to affect the vulnerability of an operator to climate change impacts on cetacean occurrence (and tourist numbers). These are the likelihood of observing a cetacean, the type of whale-watching trip, and the type of tourist. Together with an examination of an operator's adaptive capacity, these data provide the type of information required to make an assessment of resilience. Using Western Scotland as a case study, framework components were populated using species distribution modeling, a motivation-based segmentation of whale-watchers, an examination of tourist's attitudes to scenarios of a changing environment and a segmentation of trip activity. Finally, data on potential vulnerability were combined with investigation of an operator's adaptive capacity (using semi-structured interviews) to make an evaluation of resilience to climate change. Our results highlight four key findings: (1) operators have high inherent resilience to a variable environment in which uncertainty is accepted, (2) vulnerability to climate change is influenced by the type and number of trips offered by whale-watch operators, (3) adaptive capacity can be improved through enhanced perceptions of risk, and (4) vulnerability to climate change is not independent from vulnerability to other factors. Future research should focus on those areas where whale-watching is less diverse, more specialised and where, currently, the climate is less variable, as it is in these regions that vulnerability may be highest and, most likely, capacity to develop resilience at its lowest.

▼ Boat-based whale watching has been gaining momentum since its inception back in the 1950s. Global trends of the marine leisure activity continue to grow at a rapid rate and the African continent has also joined the marine tourism trend in exploring its marine sector to meet its socio-economic challenges. South Africa as one of Africa’s economic giants has also sought a development approach with a focus on utilising its marine and maritime resources to grow the economy in meeting the domestic development objectives. The South African government through the Operation Phakisa come up with a development strategy to revitalise and explore its marine and maritime sectors to fast-track its growth potential in meeting the local developmental objectives. Plettenberg Bay in the Western Cape of South Africa is well-known for its boat-based whale watching service that offers a great experience for both domestic and foreign tourists and its services form part of the Operation Phakisa programme that is aimed at economic growth and development that is focused especially on the previously disadvantaged majority to ensure that their standards of living improve. Looking into the socio-economic effects of boat-based whale watching on low-income households in Plettenberg Bay, gives meaning to finding linkages through indirect relationships between the marine environment and human lives. This therefore fosters an in-depth understanding of how to address social and economic issues in relation to a resource through the utilisation of available assets to meet sustainable development objectives. The aim of the research study is to find the linkages between boat-based whale watching as an industry with how it relates to building resilience for the low-income households in Plettenberg Bay. The study’s importance will be its ability to inform policy decisions, on adopting knowledge-based adaptive strategies and approaches to finding solutions on building resilience for low-income household through the utilisation of boat-based whale watching as a catalyst for development. The information from the research study can be utilised as a tool to empower low-income households on coastal areas, to become active participants in economic activities that are indirectly linked to boat-based whale watching industry for their own development.

▼ Compliance is a key feature for the management of non-consumptive wildlife viewing, as it can link management measures to performance and aid in developing recommendations that promote sustainable practices. Whale watching is a prominent wildlife viewing industry that is steadily rising in demand around the world. Managing vessel-cetacean encounters and operator behaviour (both commercial and recreational) is key to limiting impacts on cetaceans, yet the scale of regulatory compliance is often poor or unknown. Although efforts exist to regulate whale watching, challenges arise for the assessment of compliance in marine environments, as they are inherently spatially vast, lack physical boundaries, and can involve mobile stressors (i.e. vessels) and species. Chapter 1 reviews the shift in paradigms from consumptive to non-consumptive activities and highlights challenges for those tasked with managing the growing wildlife tourism industry, and in particular, whale watching. After reviewing a suite of measures prevalent around the world, this chapter then focuses on the Salish Sea’s approach to managing whale watching. This area epitomizes a major whale watching hub and displays complex, multi-jurisdictional and constantly evolving measures. Due to a lack of knowledge in this region, Chapter 2 shifts from theory to practice and assesses regulatory compliance with marine mammal distance regulations from 2018 to 2019 in the Salish Sea. Although compliance was nearly 80%, key drivers including vessel and species type were found to significantly influence non-compliance. Recreational vessels were non-compliant 41.9% of the time and 74.2% of non-compliant encounters occurred around killer whales across both years. The findings of the study demonstrate that case-specific investigation of compliance is necessary as each region is unique in its approach to management. Lastly, recommendations are proposed that can benefit marine managers and policymakers to enhance the performance of measures and subsequently minimize risk to cetaceans. The purpose of this study is to examine if the experience of whale watching can lead to increased knowledge of environmental problems. We also want to find out whether increased knowledge in turn could lead to changing environmental attitudes and behaviors. The theoretical framework consists of theories about sustainable tourism, ecotourism and responsible environmental behavior. The paper also has a section where previous research on ecotourism impacts on behavior and attitudes is discussed and subsequently addressed in the analysis section. Data has been collected through a case study where seven semi-structured interviews were conducted with individuals who participated in whale watching. The results show that all respondents had greater knowledge of whales by their experiences, the degree of knowledge was due to respondents' prior knowledge. The respondents did not consider their attitude towards environmental issues has changed considerably by the experience or that it affected their environmental behavior. A number of conclusions were drawn from analysis of empirical data using the selected theories. It seems that it is easier to give people knowledge than to influence them to change their attitudes and it is particularly difficult to say whether the experience of a single ecotourism experience may impact deeply ingrained attitudes and behaviors. Overall, the results suggest that ecotourism experiences to some extent leads to the strengthening of participants' environmental awareness and thus increase their interest in participating in further ecotourism experiences. Through these circular effects, an increased environmental knowledge provided by ecotourism experiences in the longer term can help to develop more responsible environmental attitudes and behavior of individuals.

Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka om upplevelsen av valskådning kan leda till ökad kunskap om miljöproblem. Vi vill också ta reda på om ökad kunskap i sin tur kan leda till förändrade miljömässiga attityder och beteenden. Uppsatsens teoretiska ramverk utgörs av teorier kring hållbar turism, ekoturism och ansvarsfullt miljömässigt beteende. Uppsatsen har även ett avsnitt där tidigare forskning kring ekoturismens inverkan på beteende och attityder diskuteras för att därefter behandlas i analysdelen. Uppsatsens empiri har samlats in genom en kvalitativ studie där sju semistrukturerade intervjuer har genomförts med individer som deltagit i valskådning. Resultaten visar att samtliga respondenter fick ökad kunskap om valar av sina upplevelser, hur hög grad av kunskap berodde dock på respondenternas förkunskap. Respondenterna ansåg inte att deras attityder gentemot miljöfrågor förändrats avsevärt av upplevelsen eller att det påverkat deras miljömässiga beteende. ▼ Whale watching has been hailed by environmental non-governmental organizations like Greenpeace and the International Fund for Animal Welfare as a responsible form of tourism that has the potential to enhance conservation outcomes for cetaceans, while also supporting the economic development of coastal communities. Tourism research suggests that while it is possible for whale watching to provide these benefits, it may also have considerable costs to members of host communities and cetaceans. My dissertation sought to gather data on the economic, ecological, and social impacts of whale watching in the Caribbean in order to evaluate the industry's performance in the region. My project thus took the form of three sub-projects. The first used an ordinary least squares analysis to examine the relationship between Caribbean country characteristics and whale watching expenditures. This analysis showed that a country's level of development changes the strength of correlations, that mass tourism development is negatively associated with whale watching profits, and that cetacean biodiversity and whale watching regulations designed to protect cetaceans both had positive relationships with the whale watching industry. In the second sub-project, I developed an index of Caribbean cetacean vulnerability to the negative impacts of whale watching with a traditional literature review informed by systematic methods. The index illustrated that both target and non-target species had vulnerabilities, and that regulations addressing these issues in the Caribbean were lacking overall. Considerable gaps in data were also identified. Finally, I used qualitative interviews in Dominica and the Dominican Republic to gather information on resident perceptions of whale watching. This analysis revealed overall positive perceptions of the industry in both countries, but also uncovered considerable levels of social conflict surrounding whale watching. Taken together, the results of my study suggest that better regulatory structures, investment in the local community, and efforts to maximize cooperation are needed in order for the Caribbean whale watch industry to better serve local communities, while mitigating its impacts on cetaceans.

▼ Since the 1980s, ecotourism has experienced a dramatic growth worldwide. Ecotourism comes with a definitional promise to promote responsible travel to natural areas, make a positive contribution to environmental conservation, and enhance the well-being of local communities. Recent years have seen whale watching tourism gaining great popularity, which originally was considered an excellent form of tourism to protect the marine wildlife and a number of benefits to the environment and local communities have since been identified. However, marine experts expressed concerns with regard to the potential negative impacts on the cetaceans and the whole marine system. Whale watching tour operators are one of the most important stakeholders of the local environment and community, which have responsibilities to protect the marine animals and environment, and various principles and legal regulations that they have to comply with. In order to maximize the benefits for the environment, community and tourists’ experience, there is a significant need for research on whale watching operators. This study was designed to examine the operators in the New Zealand context. New Zealand is considered as one of the most popular whale watching countries in the world. In the years since New Zealand progressed from whaling to whale conservation, whale watching tourism has become one of the most important sectors in ecotourism. Websites are a common medium for business operators to introduce and promote themselves by presenting their contributions for environmental conservation and social development. Thus, in order to have a better understanding of the New Zealand whale watching operators’ performance in ecotourism, it is necessary to develop detailed insights into the efforts they are making for the local environment, community and the tourists through analysing their websites. Sixty-four New Zealand whale watching operators who have a website were identified, and a thorough content analysis was employed to study them. The research results revealed that many operators consider themselves as eco-operators. Almost half of the operators presented Qualmarks, which is the New Zealand tourism certification defined by strict environmentally and socially responsible criteria. It was found that various forms of contributions were made for many aspects of ecotourism, which are classified and discussed in different groups respectively. Whale watching is a significant sector in ecotourism, involving great efforts from all stakeholders. This study shows that although a variety of contributions made for ecotourism are presented by New Zealand operators on their websites, their participation in many of these contributions is relatively low. ▼ This report investigates whether there is a need to take a more regulated approach to the conduct of dolphin tourism in Port Phillip Bay. This was achieved by seeking the views of interest groups and through an assessment of dolphin management experience in Australia and overseas. Views from respondents were received on the adequacy of the current voluntary Code of Practice for Dolphin Tour Operators in Port Phillip Bay, whether they believe dolphins suffered disturbance as a result of current tourism practices and whether there should be compulsory licensing of dolphin tour operators. The findings of this investigation were used to assess whether a more regulated approach to dolphin tour management is required to limit disturbance to the Port Phillip Bay dolphin population. The report reviews recent research which indicates that dolphins can become disturbed by unfettered and continued unwanted human interaction. It is believed that such disturbance can flow onto the dolphin population as a whole, however, the long-term effects are not clearly known, and because of this many of the respondents advocated that a precautionary approach be adopted in the management of dolphin tours. The vast majority of interest groups surveyed were of the view that some dolphin tourism practices adversely affect dolphins, particularly when coupled with the affects of harassment by the general public. To minimise such disturbance interest groups overwhelmingly supported a more regulated approach to govern dolphin tours. This approach included the incorporation of dolphin tour regulations into legislation and the introduction of a licensing system for dolphin tour operators. The main elements of the proposed dolphin regulations advocated by respondents would, at a minimum, include a consistent approach to the development of quality interpretive material, limitations on the type and number interactions and the adoption of general environmental management guidelines. To limit disturbance to the Port Phillip Bay dolphins from tour boats and the general public (particularly during peak Summer periods), it is proposed that Ticonderoga Bay at Point Nepean be proclaimed a 'no go' area (which would be an extension in protection to its current status) and that there be a limit to the number of dolphin tour operator licences. A national approach, in cooperation with states and territories, to the development of dolphin legislation is also advocated to ensure a consistency and transparency of the management of dolphin-based tourism throughout Australia.

▼ This thesis examines the human and animal dimensions of whale-watching and develops a framework for management of the humpback whale-watching industry in New South Wales (NSW), Australia.The short-term responses of humpback whales to whale-watching vessels during their southward migration on the south coast of NSW were assessed. The behavior of pods was recorded from commercial whale-watching vessels during tours and compared to pods in the absence of vessels observed from shore in the same area. Pod sizes and composition were typical of southward migrating whales. Calf pods were more sensitive to the presence of vessels than non-calf pods. Whilst there was a longer dive time and a greater percentage of time spent submerged by whales in the presence of vessels, there were no associated changes in respiration intervals. Some surface behaviours were suppressed in the presence of vessels. Surface-active behaviours were prevalent in this study which indicates that social interactions amongst conspecifics are common during the southern migration.Feeding pods were observed on 24.5% of all whale-watching trips and during 14% of all observations made from shore. South-eastern NSW is probably a significant supplemental feeding ground for migrating whales. Feeding behaviour did not alter in the presence of vessels but the time between feeding lunges increased when vessels were closer than 100 m and when more than one vessel was present. The demographics, expectations, experience and satisfaction of land-based and boat-based whale-watchers in NSW were assessed by a questionnaire to participants. Land-based whale-watchers had high and often unrealistic expectations about their whale-watching experience and were moderately satisfied. Boat-based whale-watchers had high, but often realistic expectations of their experience and were highly satisfied. Satisfaction was a function of the degree to which expectations were met, the proximity of whales, the numbers of whales, their behavioural displays and the level of information available on whales. Whale-watchers showed limited increase in their knowledge and conservation-oriented behaviours over the long term. Current education about whales requires better structure and clearer conservation objectives. This study identifies research, education and vessel management as three fundamental components for the sustainable management of the whale-watching industry, and makes recommendations incorporating these components. O arquipélago dos Açores é um destino emergente para o turismo de observação de vida marinha, oferecendo a possibilidade de mergulho com espécies emblemáticas, nomeadamente o tubarão azul e jamanta, e de observação de uma elevada diversidade de espécies de cetáceos. Este estudo explora as dimensões socias da observação de cetáceos e do mergulho, procurando contribuir para o desenvolvimento de estratégias de gestão sustentável destas actividades. Compreender e explorar a variabilidade existente nas atitudes e perfis dos consumidores destes produtos turísticos pode ajudar os decisores e operadores locais a avaliar o potencial de desenvolvimento futuro deste mercado, bem como a desenhar melhores práticas e políticas de gestão. A investigação sobre estas temáticas, prevendo o comportamento dos utilizadores recreativos e de possíveis quebras na qualidade do destino turístico, pode contribuir significativamente para a melhoria das medidas de gestão. Este estudo aplica métodos de investigação qualitativos e quantitativos, avaliando os dados obtidos através de modelos conceptuais de turismo de observação de vida selvagem marinha. O modelo de Duffus e Dearden (1990) relativo às actividades recreativas não consumistas, orientadas para a vida selvagem constitui o principal quadro conceptual desta investigação. […].

The Azores archipelago is an emerging marine wildlife tourism destination featuring diving with large iconic species including blue sharks and manta rays and whale watching with a high diversity of cetacean species. This study explores human dimensions of whale watching and diving as an input for sustainable management strategies for these activities. Understanding and exploring the variability in attitudes and profiles of marine wildlife users can help decision makers and local operators assess the potential for future development of this market as well as design better management practices and policies. Research on these subjects has the potential to enhance management through predicting the behavior of recreationists and forecasting possible quality declines of a destination. This study applies both qualitative and quantitative research methods and evaluates the obtained data with the help of conceptual marine wildlife tourism models. Duffus and Dearden’s (1990) model of non-consumptive wildlife-oriented recreation provides the main conceptual framework for this research. […].

Tendo em vista que o turismo, de forma genérica, tem ganhado cada vez mais representatividade no que se refere ao desenvolvimento econômico de diversas regiões do globo, percebe-se também que nos últimos 15 anos o turismo de observação de cetáceos tem mostrado um crescimento forte e estável na América Latina. Neste contexto, é possível afirmar que o Brasil apresenta um excelente potencial para o futuro desenvolvimento do turismo de observação de baleias por haver uma grande diversidade de cetáceos que frequentam as águas do litoral do país. Assim, percebendo a necessidade de implantar ferramentas eficazes em determinar a capacidade e carga em áreas naturais protegidas que sofrem influência de atividade urísticas, o presente estudo visa a estudar o turismo de observação embarcado de cetáceos na região da APA da Baleia Franca, Santa Catarina, Brasil, na perspectiva da experiência do visitante e da proteção dos recursos marinhos. Acredita-se que esta perspectiva possa auxiliar nas tomadas de decisões da gestão da APA da Baleia Franca, bem como fornecer possibilidades para a determinação da capacidade de carga do urismo de observação embarcado de cetáceos nesta região. A fim de atender aos objetivos deste estudo, os procedimentos de coleta de dados foram divididos a partir dos seguintes objetivos específicos: 1) Conhecer a relação entre o comportamento das baleias e da presença de visitantes no turismo de observação embarcado de cetáceos; 2) avaliar a qualidade da experiência do visitante da APA da Baleia Franca/SC; 3) verificar de que orma os indicadores de qualidade de experiência do visitante podem ser contemplados nas etapas de um método de capacidade de carga. Assim, o resente estudo se caracteriza como sendo qualitativo e quantitativo, utilizando-se das seguintes técnicas e instrumentos de coleta de dados: pesquisa documental, levantamento bibliográfico, aplicação de questionários, observação sistemática e não-participante, análise comparativa e estatística multivariada. Os resultados preliminares indicam que, no que se refere à qualidade da experiência do visitante, é possível afirmar que a percepção dos visitantes quanto à infraestrutura turística é a mais afetada, sendo a que apresentou níveis de satisfação bem distribuídos entre as notas. É possível, ainda, concluir que os entrevistados possuem uma percepção positiva da operação turística e da qualidade de sua experiência na atividade de observação de cetáceos na APA da Baleia Franca

The beauty of Madeira does not finish with just wonderful landscapes and mountains, tropical gardens, old villages and famed wines. Water that surrounds the island is filled with so much beauty too. In the Archipelago of Madeira, we can observe around 35% of the worldwide species of marine mammals. Whale-watching in Madeira is a quite recent but fast-growing activity. The commercial activity of whale-watching began on the south coast of Madeira in the beginning of 2000s. Nowadays there are more than 12 companies dedicated to this business. Most of them are located in the main island of Madeira but there is also one in Porto Santo doing whale-watching during the touristic season. I had a great opportunity to make my master degree project in cooperation with “Ventura| Nature emotion” company. It is a nature tourism company based in Madeira Island, Portugal with a clear ambition – organizing birdwatching tours, whale and dolphin watching tours and outdoor activities around Madeira Island, Desertas islands and Selvagens islands on a classic sailing boat. During my 9-month internship, I worked in the sea and on the land. The internship program has offered me a great opportunity to grow and develop. Working in “Ventura| Nature emotion” as an intern was not only an honor and privilege but a lifelong experience that will forever shape my professional life. I have studied detailed information of marine life of the Madeira Archipelago, learnt the operation system of an ecotourism company business and obtained financial data about whale-watching activity which I used for my final innovation study. Moreover, the background of my first degree in finances was an advantage to develop the proposed study. The main goal of this innovation study is to calculate the economic contribution of the whale-watching industry to the Madeira archipelago in 2015, and to show all financial benefits that each individual species and each individual animal brings to the community. The total direct income from the 12 main companies which conduct whale-watching activity in Madeira Archipelago in 2015 amounted €4 186 364.For this innovation study, we used a few qualitative methods: document analysis, client interviews, active observations and sighting data analysis. By combining data from the active participation of marine- life observation and numbers from whale-watching operators, it was possible to estimate the direct economic contribution of whale-watching. By client interviews, we identified target audience for this kind of activity and key ideas of promotion strategy for whale-watching. This can help to promote Madeira Island as a worldwide whalewatching destination. Finally, directions of future work in a field of whale watching activity in the Madeira Archipelago were determined. This innovation study includes abstract, 5 chapters, conclusion, bibliography and annex.

▼ A descriptive case study approach and 34 indicators was used to examine the socio-economic impacts of whale watching tourism in the Laguna San Ignacio (LSI) World Heritage Site - located within the El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve in Baja California Sur, Mexico. The framework measured both the socio-economic changes, and the economic viability of the local and regional operators. This approach led to a detailed understanding of the underlying, and often complex, inter-related factors that shaped the ecotourism development in LSI between 1994 and 2002. It identified strengths and weaknesses of current ecotourism development making it a valid tool for evaluating and improving these activities in any biosphere reserve. More specifically the objectives were to examine: 1. How existing ecotourism operations and their activities in the LSI have changed since 1994; 2. Whether these changes have made ecotourism a more viable socio-economic development alternative for the local communities; and 3. Which strategies may be useful in overcoming identified barriers to further socio-economic benefits both from existing and future ecotourism activities. The results strongly suggested that the benefits from ecotourism improved significantly between 1994 and 2002. Economically this was reflected in growth of visitor numbers (50%), employment (100%) and local and regional revenue approximately 70% (or 55% in real terms adjusting for inflation). Social benefits were seen in more cooperation among previous antagonistic stakeholders; a wider distribution of ecotourism benefits; some improvement in living standards and increasing local support for the Reserve. Politically, local stakeholders became more empowered through involvement in tourism related management activities. The viability of the local and regional operators also improved significantly as they became more sophisticated in their product offerings, enhanced their facilities and gained a market share of ecotourism relative to the foreign operators. These improvements were particular true for the operators that sold package tours. However, the analyses also revealed a number of barriers with the most important ones being: • Unresolved historic land use conflicts over rights to land with ecotourism possibilities; • Lack of activities diversification possibilities outside the tourism season; • Stagnating visitor numbers; • Uneven business skills among operators; • Poor marketing and promotional efforts; • Insufficient ecotourism infrastructure; • A proposed ecotourism tax; • Low profit margin of the ecotourism operators; and • Lack of funding for further investments To alleviate these threats and barriers 13 general strategies were identified. An elaboration of these resulted in 39 concrete operational strategies on how potentially to implement them.

▼ Two studies were carried out to describe the relationship between vessel presence on the behaviour of both whales and dolphins. Each study conducted focal follows on members of two endangered sub-populations using a land-based theodolite station in order to track and mark positions of opportunistic vessel traffic in relation to animal surfacings. Southern resident killer whales (Orcinus orca) were theodolite tracked during the months of May-August for three field seasons (1999-2001), off San Juan Island, Washington State, U.S.A, in an independent study. Migrating humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) were theodolite tracked off Moreton Island, Queensland, Australia during 2005 from May-September in partial fulfilment for a Master of Science degree. For each study, four dependent whale variables were analysed in relation to two boat variables. Whale variables included mean time per dive (dive time), swimming speed, directness of path traveled (directness index) and the number of surface behaviours per hour such as breaches or tail-slaps (surface active behaviour). The two boat variables included a count of the number of boats within the study area during each tracking session (boat count) and the point of closest approach (PCA) by a vessel to the focal animal during the tracking session. Southern resident killer whales were found to decrease path directness with the point of closest approach of vessels. As whales adopted a more circuitious path, distance travelled increased by 9.5% when boats were within 100 m. Humpback whales significantly decreased their rate of surface active behaviour by 50% when boats were present. This thesis presents data that show a snapshot of the levels to which both species are exposed to vessel traffic, as well as subtle short-term behavioural responses in relation to vessel presence. I compare the impacts of vessel traffic identified for the two species, and suggest possible long-term population consequences due to potential interruptions of foraging and/or social behaviours. I discuss limitations of small data sets such as these and discuss ways in which further research can be better designed. Deliberate planning of vessel effect studies and their subsequent analyses can provide conservation managers useful information for determining recovery strategies of endangered whales and dolphins.
