▼ Numerous studies have examined the effects of forest fragmentation on songbird abundance and demographics citing decreased nest success from increased levels of predation and parasitism and decreased suitable habitat as possible lower abundances and reduced fecundity. Many of these studies looked at traditional forest fragmentation where patches of mature forest are isolated by surrounding agricultural or suburban development. The development of shallow oil and gas resources in the Mid-Atlantic region causes a different type of fragmentation, where small well pads and access roads perforate a mature forest landscape. I looked at the effects of shallow oil and gas development on songbird abundance at both the local scale of individual wells and the landscape scale at differing well densities. I used fixed-radius point counts to survey songbirds at both scales. At the local scale I compared active well sites and paired control sites. At the landscape scale I compared 25 hectare sites with various levels of oil and gas development: control (0 wells/site), low well density (1-5 wells/site), and high well density (10-15 wells/site). I also took vegetation measurements within each site to determine if any habitat characteristics varied with the presence of wells. Closed canopy nesters, black-throated green warblers (Dendroica virens), blackburnian warblers (Dendroica fusca), ovenbirds (Seiurus aurocapilla), and dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis) were more abundant at control sites than at well sites at the local scale, and small-gap canopy nesters, understory nesters, American robins (Turdus migratorius), veerys (Catharus fuscescens), chestnut-sided warblers (Dendroica pensylvanica), and chipping sparrows (Spizella passerina) were more abundant at well sites than at control sites. At the landscape scale, cavity/snag nesters, small-gap canopy nesters, yellow-bellied sapsuckers (Sphyrapicus varius), and chipping sparrows increased with increasing well density. No nesting guild showed a negative response to wells at the landscape scale; however, red-eyed vireo (Vireo olivaceus) abundance decreased with increasing well density. Species richness was higher at well sites than at control sites and increased with increasing well density. Avian communities differed between northern hardwood and oak forest types at control sites but were not significantly different when wells were present at both the local and landscape scale. Canopy cover and basal area were lowest 20 m from well sites at the local scale and decreased with increasing well density at the landscape scale. My results suggest that shallow oil and gas development altered mature forest habitat enough to significantly affect the abundance of species in all four nesting guilds examined in this study. The development creates small-gaps, regeneration and snags along roads and well pads which benefit many species; however, closed canopy nesting species lose essential core forest habitat. ▼ Addition of a few percent of nitrogen to conventional III-V semiconductor alloys creates a surprising reduction of the host band-gap. Due to their unusual band-gap characteristics, dilute nitride III-V semiconductor alloys such as Ga(In)AsN are suitable candidates to serve as a 1eV 3rd junction sub-cell in current high efficiency multi-junction solar cells, and are projected to achieve solar cell efficiencies of ~40%. In order to overcome material constraints such as poor minority carrier lifetime and doping issues in dilute nitrides, prior work has involved insertion of quantum well (QW) nanostructures of dilute nitrides within the intrinsic region of a solar cell, nevertheless, issues of carrier extraction have persisted. In order to improve upon this design, in this work, the band structure and energy levels of dilute nitride multi-quantum-well (MQW) system are calculated, from which the absorption coefficient is evaluated as a function of strain, nitrogen concentration, and electric field strength. Fitting the simulated value of absorption to experimental results showed incomplete extraction of carriers in the multi-quantum well region. Experimental characterization of previously grown dilute nitrides revealed the presence of a parasitic nitridation of the GaAsN/GaAs interface. Improvement of QW quality was done by using a modified run-vent system reduced nitridation. Improvement of carrier extraction was proposed based on the calculations of thermally assisted resonant tunneling QW design, and preliminary devices were grown to test this design. Results included a record open circuit voltage of 636 mV, and improved carrier extraction from resonant tunneling MQW solar cells of ~1eV, enabling future fabrication of multi-junction devices with efficiencies of ~39% (1 sun) and ~49% (500 sun conc). These models have three major limitations: (i) it is impossible to compute wellbore pressure within the source, (ii) it is difficult to conduct a realistic comparison between horizontal well and vertical fracture transient pressure responses, and (iii) the line source approximation may not be adequate for reservoirs with thin pay zones. This work attempts to overcome these limitations by developing a more flexible analytical solution using the solid bar approximation. A technique that permits the conversion of the pressure response of any horizontal well system into a physically equivalent vertical fracture response is also presented. A new type curve solution is developed for a hydraulically fractured and horizontal well producing from a solid bar source in an infinite-acting. Analysis of computed horizontal wellbore pressures reveals that error ranging from 5 to 20% depending on the value of dimensionless radius (rwD) was introduced by the line source assumption. The proposed analytical solution reduces to the existing fully/partially penetrating vertical fracture solution developed by Raghavan et al. as the aspect ratio aspect ratio (m) approached zero (m < 10-4), and to the horizontal fracture solution developed by Gringarten and Ramey as m approaches unity. Our horizontal fracture solution yields superior early time (tDxf < 10-3) solution and improved computational efficiency compared to the Gringarten and Ramey's solution, and yields excellent agreement for tDxf < 10-3. A dimensionless rate function (Beta-function) is introduced to convert the pressure response of a horizontal well into an equivalent vertical fracture response. A step-wise algorithm for the computation of Beta -function is developed. This provides an easier way of representing horizontal wells in numerical reservoir simulation without the rigor of employing complex formulations for the computation of effective well block radius. ▼ This dissertation presents a numerical anomalous-diffusion model for well performance analysis in unconventional wells and investigates its applicability to actual field data. Motivation for this research arises from the limitations of current modeling approaches to properly capture the production characteristics observed in complex nanoporous formations. First, a linear (1D) anomalous-diffusion model for single-phase slightly compressible flow is developed. To do so, Darcy’s Law is replaced by a more general fractional flux law incorporating long-range spatial and temporal pressure dependencies. Cases of constant-terminal-rate and constant-terminal-pressure production are considered and validated with available analytical solutions for both transient- and boundary-dominated flow periods. It is shown that the severity of sub- or super-diffusion can be determined from common diagnostic log-log plots of pressure drop or rate decline vs. time. Based on these insights, a novel approach for production data analysis in unconventional wells is proposed and applied to two Barnett shale-gas wells, one displaying characteristics of super-diffusion, the other of sub-diffusion. The numerical, slightly compressible flow model is converted to gas flow and conventional PVT correlations are used. Although the example analyses are based on limited production, reservoir, and completion data, the model shows potential in capturing the production characteristics of both wells. Finally, the anomalous-diffusion model is extended to two-phase, immiscible oil-water flow using an Implicit Pressure Explicit Saturation (IMPES) formulation, and the effects of sub- and super-diffusion on phase flow-rates and saturation distributions are studied. While simplifying assumptions are made with respect to phase behavior and fluid-rock interactions in nanoporous formations, the model is meant as a proof of concept for the future study of multi-phase flow under anomalous diffusion. ▼ Fotodetectores baseados em poços quânticos (QWIPs Quantum¬-Well Infrared Photodetectors) possuem inúmeras aplicações nos campos da medicina, engenharia, defesa e monitoramento meteorológico e ambiental. O espectro de absorção dos QWIPs possui alta seletividade do comprimento de onda, e esse tipo de fotodetector é a escolha atual para a fabricação de câmeras de alta resolução operando no infravermelho. Atualmente, o Brasil enfrenta uma limitação na importação desse tipo de tecnologia, imposta pelos países mais desenvolvidos, devido à possibilidade de ser usada em aplicações militares. Neste trabalho, propomos o desenvolvimento e a fabricação de novos fotodetectores baseados em transições intrabanda em poços quânticos crescidos por epitaxia de feixes moleculares sobre substratos de GaAs. O crescimento epitaxial dos poços quânticos foi investigado, e as amostras foram analisadas por fotoluminescência (PL, Photoluminescence) de modo a verificarmos a qualidade e reprodutibilidade das heteroestruturas produzidas. O cálculo dos níveis de energia e das funções de onda dos poços quânticos foi feito por meio da implementação numérica do método da matriz de transferência [21] no software Mathematica. Esse método também foi aplicado ao cálculo autoconsistente envolvendo a dopagem da estrutura. A partir dos valores das energias de confinamento e das funções de onda obtidas pelo programa, algumas grandezas físicas puderam ser estimadas tais como o coeficiente de absorção teórico, a corrente de escuro e o ruído. Também foi implementado um modelo para o cálculo dos níveis de energia de uma impureza hidrogenóide dentro de um poço quântico de GaAs com barreiras de AlGaAs. Acredita-se que esse sistema possua melhores características de ruído em relação a um QWIP comum, no qual as impurezas estão completamente ionizadas [25] [26] [27]. O processamento das amostras para a fabricação dos fotodetectores foi desenvolvido e otimizado, e envolveu técnicas convencionais de fotolitografia, para a formação por ataque químico das estruturas de pequenos fotodetectores singelos sobre a amostra, e a deposição de filmes finos metálicos para a obtenção dos contatos (ôhmicos). Foram desenvolvidas e implementadas várias técnicas de caracterização para determinar o comprimento de onda de operação, a responsividade, o ruído intrínseco, e a corrente no escuro (dark current) dos QWIPs fabricados. No inicio deste projeto de doutorado, nenhuma das técnicas de caracterização estava disponível no laboratório. A caracterização completa dos QWIPs foi feita medindo-se o coeficiente de absorção e a resposta espectral por espectroscopia no infravermelho por transformada de Fourier (FTIR), a fotocorrente foi medida com um corpo negro, a corrente de escuro usando curvas I-V, e o ruído com um analisador de espectros. As medidas foram realizadas em função da voltagem de polarização (bias) aplicada, em diferentes valores de temperatura. ▼ Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) has been adopted as a modern water management strategy to store water into subsurface during surplus periods for future recovery. As one application of MAR, dry well is installed in vadose zone and can be used to facilitate infiltration of recharge water through an unsaturated formation into the underlying aquifer. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of applying dry wells in Harris County, Texas. Harris County is located in southeastern Texas and contains Houston, the fourth largest metropolitan area in the US. The county suffered both severe floods and droughts in recent years, including Hurricane Harvey in 2017, and drought in record in 2011. This project was performed in two phases. Phase 1 consists of feasibility study, in which the suitable recharge locations were investigated based on existing data. Phase 2 focuses on modeling the dry well performance using HYDRUS 2D, for a range of soil conditions and physical configurations, to assist in developing guidelines for dry well design and its application in Harris County. In feasibility study, central portions of Harris County were identified to be suitable for dry wells. Following low impact development (LID) concept, which aims to reduce runoff near the source, dry wells are recommended to be placed near existing retention basins. In model simulations, three saturated hydraulic conductivities (Kvsat) of soils from targeted sites were incorporated (0.24 m/d, 0.47 m/d, and 0.78 m/d). Aiming for an extensive investigation on the controlling factors, the well length, duration of injection, separation distance between dry well and water table, multiple injections, antecedent soil moisture, Kvsat, natural recharge, location of clay lens, and tracer movement, were addressed in modeling process. The model suggests dry wells are most appropriate for regions with a deep groundwater table, if the high recharge rate is of the uppermost concern. High antecedent soil moisture can result in slow water movement and limited storage capacity. In certain areas, injecting several days after the peak storm is preferred if timed operation is possible. Prior to dry well construction, location and size of subsurface clay lens should be identified to avoid negative impact from clay lens. Contaminant fate and transport tests are recommended to determine the minimum separation distance for various ranges of soil Kvsat. ▼ Chronic exposure to naturally occurring arsenic (As) in groundwater threatens the health of >150 million villagers in S/SE Asia. In Bangladesh, low As aquifers offer the best hope of reducing the exposure of 35-40 million remain exposed to elevated levels of As in drinking water (>10 μg/L). These low As aquifers could be affected, however, by massive pumping from shallow (<30 m) depths for growing rice and overexploitation of deeper aquifer for municipal water supply. The goal of this dissertation is to assess the impacts of groundwater pumping on the distribution in groundwater of dissolved As, reactive carbon, and redox-sensitive elements in anoxic aquifers of Bangladesh based on long-term hydrologic measurements, geochemical analyses, and numerical flow modeling. In the second chapter, changes in the well-water As concentrations within a 25 sq. km area over a 10+ year timespan are assessed on the basis of continuous time series for 18 monitoring wells, a set of 271 wells resampled three times, and a large dataset obtained from blanket surveys of several thousand wells in the region. The two larger data sets both show a 10% decline in the initial areal mean As of 100 μg/L. This decline can be explained by flushing of As in the shallow aquifer by low-As recharge water, evidently compensated to some extent by the desorption of sediment-bound As. The presence of a large exchangeable pool of As in the sediment therefore seems to buffer changes in the distribution of As in the face of large perturbation in groundwater flow, albeit not enough to prevent some trends indicated by the detailed time series. The third chapter provides a complementary perspective on groundwater-sediment interactions by quantifying the rates of adsorption and desorption of As with column experiments conducted in the field for two different types of sediments: grey reduced Holocene sands and orange oxidized Pleistocene sands. The data show that, contrary to widely held beliefs, retardation of As transport by adsorption is quite similar in Holocene and Pleistocene sediments, even if Holocene sands initially contain a much larger pool of easily mobilizable As. The field column experiments also showed significant changes in solid phase speciation that affected As retention within a timespan of only a few weeks. Detailed field observations and flow modeling in the fourth chapter examine how perturbed flow paths can draw either As or reactive carbon into a Pleistocene aquifer. A groundwater flow model, constrained by head measurements and isotopic tracer data shows that certain portions of the aquifer are becoming increasingly contaminated with As as a result of municipal pumping, but against a background of redox transformation in the aquifer that probably preceded this perturbation. Overall, the research conducted for this thesis shows that alteration of the hydrological system due to local and regional forcing is affecting the distribution of As in groundwater. ▼ Driving semiconductor quantum wells with terahertz electric fields strong enough to overcome the Coulomb attraction between bound electron-hole pairs leads to high-order sideband generation (HSG). In HSG, excitons are optically-injected into quantum wells by a weak near-infrared (NIR) laser while simultaneously being illuminated with a terahertz field from the UCSB Free Electron Laser. The phenomenon can be described by the so-called "three step model" developed in high-field atomic physics: (1) the electron and hole tunnel-ionize in the strong field, (2) the now-free particles accelerate in the field, and (3) they recollide, emitting a photon. The two lasers are continuous, so the emitted photons are sidebands on the NIR laser. Because of the large gain of kinetic energy before recollision, an HSG spectrum has a broad bandwidth with many more sidebands above the NIR frequency than below. The largest spectra span over one hundred nanometers, with over 100th order sidebands above and 20th order below.The electron and hole must remain coherent throughout their trajectories, which can last hundreds of femtoseconds and extend for more than fifty nanometers, if they are to recollide. Sidebands have been observed that result from recollisions with kinetic energies far above the threshold for optical phonon emission. These high orders persist up to room temperature. Not even quenched disorder in the quantum wells strongly attenuates the HSG signal. Because of this coherence, the electron and hole are very sensitive to the complete band structure of the material. Excitation by linear NIR polarization creates both the electron and hole in a superposition of spin-up and spin-down states with complex coefficients given by the relative orientation of the NIR polarization and the THz polarization. Interference between these the spin-up and spin-down particles, particularly in the valence band and mediated by non-Abelian Berry curvature, has large effects on both the intensity and polarization state of the sidebands. The connection between HSG and complete band structure points to the possibility of directly measuring both the band dispersion relations as well as the non-Abelian Berry curvature of the host material.

▼ The design, fabrication and characterisation of semiconductor waveguide autocorrelator, as a device for use in the analysis of ultra-short pulses, are described. The initial experiments carried out, using an AlGaAs optical waveguide, to detect the interferometric autocorrelation trace of light from a mode-locked Nd+3:YAG laser. Both intensity and interferometric autocorrelation traces of pulses from a mode-locked Nd+3:YLF laser were then successfully obtained for the first time using the same device. The autocorrelation trace gives the full width at half maximum of the mode-locked pulses from the Nd+3:YLF laser to be approximately 17.7 ps. The complete polarisation dependence of the two photon absorption coefficient, beta, has been obtained by measuring the orientational dependence and the contrast ratio of the photocurrent in the device at an optical frequency far above that of the half-bandgap. Measurements of the pulse width dependence of the two-photon absorption photocurrent in GaAs p-i-n waveguide photodetector using subpicosecond optical pulses at 1.5 mum are reported. For a fixed pulse energy, the photocurrent is observed to depend linearly on the inverse of the optical pulse width. A subnanosecond electrical response is also observed. The propagation loss and the single photon absorption coefficients are measured as a function of wavelength in a device with an Al0.2Ga0.8As waveguide core. The propagation loss was as low as 1.37 cm-l at a wavelength of 904 nm. Using a photocurrent technique, band-to-band absorption was measured for photon energies well below that of the bandgap. It was demonstrated that, although the band-to-band absorption coefficient is small (~10-2 cm-1 at a wavelength of 1 mum), it is responsible for reducing the contrast ratio of the waveguide autocorrelator. Two-section lasers were fabricated in strained layer InGaAs/GaAs double quantum well material with intracavity saturable absorbers. Passive Q-switching was demonstrate in these lasers. Self-pulsation is seen at frequencies up to 12.5 GHz with a full width at half maximum of 20 ps.
