Skozi primere predstavimo in analiziramo vrste interaktivne promocije.

▼ It has often been observed
that there is a significant gap between the aspirations for the teaching of English as expressed in Japanese Ministry of Education curriculum guidelines and the reality of classroom practice. Using a combination of questionnaires, semi-structured
interviews, classroom observations and curriculum and textbook analysis, this thesis seeks to explore
that gap. While many of the reasons identified in the past (community expectations, the negative impact of entrance examinations, and limited time for lesson preparation) did emerge as being of significance, a wide range of other issues also emerged which, taken together, suggest
that the problems faced by teachers of English in Japanese schools are more complex and multi-faceted than the literature appears to suggest.
Analysis of the Japanese curriculum for English indicates
that while it is clearly influenced by developments in the areas of communicative competence and communicative language teaching and by research in the area of discourse analysis, it includes many features
that are reminiscent of a considerably more traditional approach. It appears to proscribe in some places what it recommends in others, provides little guidance on critical aspects of curriculum implementation, and was judged by some of the teachers involved in the study to take little account of the context in which Japanese teachers work. So far as language teacher training is concerned, there appear sometimes to be very significant gaps in what is provided, with the courses offered often being taught by academics who may, in some cases,
have themselves had little training in language teaching and may also lack understanding and experience of teaching in schools. Widely used textbooks, all approved by the Ministry of Education and written by teams dominated by university-based academics, appear to be largely absent of any genuine communicative orientation. Add to this the fact
that changes in expectations relating to teacher behaviour
have not been accompanied by any concerted effort to change community attitudes or outdated testing and assessment procedures, and it should come as no surprise to find
that the language lessons observed were teacher-dominated, with the teachers talking, mostly in Japanese, for most of the time, and with considerable reliance on translation, repetition and rote learning. Although it seems to be widely believed
that grammar translation is the dominant approach, these lessons exhibited a curious mixture of aspects of grammar translation and aspects of audio-lingualism (with its behaviourist and structural underpinnings). It has often been noted
that teachers in Japanese secondary schools are generally heavily burdened with non-teaching responsibilities. However, the constant teacher-focus and the ongoing struggle to communicate with students
that characterized these lessons would appear to do little to ease the burden on teachers.
In spite of all of the problems they face, many of the teachers involved in this study appreciate the value of…

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT
Title: The perceptions of nurses and certified nursing assistants on care-related prevention concerning people with dementia: a mixed methods approach.
Background: Because of the growing number of people with dementia, care-related prevention activities done by nurses and certified nursing assistants will become increasingly important to prevent complications and maintain an acceptable quality of life. Currently it’s unknown what the perceptions of nurses and certified nursing assistants towards care-related prevention in dementia care are.
Aim: To gain insight into the perceptions of nurses and certified nursing assistants towards care-related prevention so care-related prevention for people with dementia can be further improved in the future. Research question: How do nurses and certified nursing assistants working in home care, residential or nursing homes perceive care-related prevention concerning people with dementia?
Method: A mixed methods approach with
survey research and individual semi-structured
interviews. First, secondary analyses were done on existing
survey data collected in 2011 on a sample of 206 nurses and certified nursing assistants. Second, in March-May 2014 12 individual semi-structured
interviews were
conducted to embellish the quantitative results.
Results: From this study three concepts related to the perceptions of nurses and CNAs towards care-related prevention activities emerged: attitude, knowledge and skills and the future. Nurses and certified nursing assistants think care-related prevention is a task of their profession. They experience insufficient knowledge and skills and they like to devote more time to care-related prevention in the future.
Conclusion: Nurses and certified nursing assistants perceive care-related prevention to be part of their profession. They however express the need for more education on care-related prevention, preferably in a classroom setting. In the future, nurses and certified nursing assistants like to devote more time to care-related prevention and e-health can support this.
Recommendations: Additional training of nurses and certified nursing assistants focused on their different needs and
use of e-health.

▼ There are many reasons why many colleges and universities include a music department, with the most obvious one being that offering a music major is a part of the mission of the institution. As an example, at the University of Minnesota, the campuses of the Twin Cities, Duluth, and Morris offer a music major, with the Twin Cities cam-pus offering music degrees that range from the baccalaureate to the doctorate. Only the campuses at Rochester and Crookston do not offer a music major, with the Rochester campus offering no music classes. Those University of Minnesota music departments that offer the music major would not do so if there were not employment opportunities, and indeed, these opportunities do exist. Most public schools, from elementary to high school, offer musical opportunities in the form of general music, vocal, and instrumental music and there is a demand for teachers in the area of music education. Professional musicians are frequently, although not always, the product of a college education that includes the major in music, and School of Music at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, is a good example of a comprehensive music department that has resulted in graduates who have found satisfying and lucrative careers in the field of music. However, active collegiate music programs are not limited to departments that offer a music major. This study focuses on those programs that do not offer a music major, but rather only offer a music minor, and the Crookston Campus of the University of Minnesota is one of those programs. Naturally, it can be assumed that the music curriculum at the “music-minor only school” will be more limited than at the school that offers the major. Furthermore, students might choose a college because they are pursuing the music major, but are unlikely to choose a college because of any minor that might be offered. Indeed, at the Crookston campus, the number of music courses offered are relatively few in number, and students generally do not choose to embark on a college education on that campus because of the music program. ii Unfortunately, there is almost no research focused on collegiate minors, and no research could be found on the more specialized stand-alone music minor. In order to proceed, it was determined that this research would be in the form of what is frequently referred to as a mixed-methods study. Data were collected from the 47 known institutions that offer the stand-alone music minor and this information is presented in the form of charts, graphs, and narrative. An example of the type of data collected and compared is the number of music theory credits that are required to complete the minor from each of the surveyed music departments, and the results showed that the credit re-quirements range from 0 to 8. Also a part of this research were faculty interviews from 15 of the surveyed institutions. These were conducted over the telephone and a summary from each of these…

▼ Questionnaires
that assess emerging electronic nicotine delivery systems, or ENDS, are often based on traditional tobacco product surveys. Unique attributes of ENDS makes accurate assessment of their
use a challenge for researchers. Cognitive
interviews are a way of gaining insight into participants’ interpretations of
survey questions and the methods they
use in answering
survey questions. As part of a larger study, cognitive
interviews were used to test a tobacco
use survey that included ENDS questions with 25 young adults in Texas. By mapping results from cognitive
interviews onto Tourangeau’s four stage model of the
survey response process, problems associated with
survey questions were revised and then re-tested in multiple rounds of cognitive
interviews. The four main areas of identified problems and attempts at question revision lay in improving the participant comprehension of the questions, the answer estimation processes, answer retrieval, and the answer response process. Comprehension issues regarding discernment between ENDS device types appeared to improve when representative pictures were added to the
survey showing the vii type of device in question. Question comprehension and answer estimation processes both improved regarding using ENDS only as nicotine delivery systems when specific language
that named nicotine cartridges and e-liquid as the content of devices was included in the question text. Regarding the answer retrieval process, results of this study showed
that this sample of users had problems quantifying the amount of ENDS products consumed, as well as difficulty reporting the frequency of ENDS product
use. The answer response improvement process allowed cognitive interview participants to add their own reasons for trying and using ENDS products to the list of available answer choices in multiple response questions. Cognitive
interviews offered insight into the new and rapidly changing landscape of ENDS products through in-depth conversations with users. Future research is needed
that allows both users and researchers to quantify ENDS product
use. Exploration into the wide array of ENDS devices as well as possible population differences among specific device-type users would be valuable to public health professionals. As a
survey-improvement tool, cognitive interviewing provided valuable insight into
survey interpretation
that was otherwise inaccessible to researchers.

▼ With a projected increase in electricity demand and low-carbon energy generation in the UK, expansion of the existing transmission grid network is required. In going beyond the NIMBY concept, Devine-Wright (2009) posited a place-based approach that highlights the roles of place attachment and place-related symbolic meanings for understanding public responses to energy infrastructure proposals. This PhD research investigated two overarching and interrelated research aims. The first sought to enlarge our understandings of the processes of attachment and detachment to the residence place by investigating the dynamics of varieties of people-place relations across the life course (people's 'life-place trajectories'), thus addressing the limitation of studies adopting a 'structural' approach to the study of people-place relations. This research, in a second instance, sought to better understand the role of people's life-place trajectories and a range of project-based factors (i.e. procedural and distributive justice) in shaping people's responses to a power line proposal. This research focussed on the Hinckley Point C (HPC) transmission line proposal and residents of the town of Nailsea, South-West England. A social representations theory framework was usefully applied to this research by acknowledging that people's personal place relations and their beliefs about proposed place change, are situated and embedded within wider social representations of place and project. A mixed methods approach was employed comprising three empirical studies. The first consisted of twenty-five narrative interviews, the second a set of five focus group interviews, and the third a questionnaire survey study (n=264) amongst a representative sample of Nailsea residents. Triangulating findings across the three studies produced a novel set of key findings. By elaborating five novel 'life-place trajectories', this PhD research moved beyond structural approaches to the study of people-place relations and made a novel contribution to our understandings of the processes and dynamics of attachment and detachment to the residence place across the life course. This research further confirmed the existing typology of people-place relations and revealed a novel variety termed 'Traditional-active attachment'. Life-place trajectories were instrumental in informing divergent representations of the nearby countryside which were more or less congruent with objectified representations of the HPC project. Future studies investigating place and project meanings should be sensitive to these trajectories. Interestingly, place as a 'centre of meaning' rather than a 'locus of attachment' (or non-attachment) emerged as particularly salient for understanding responses to the project. Project-based factors were salient in informing participants' responses toward the project. A perceived imbalance between high local costs and an absence of local benefits was seen to result in distributive injustice and opposition toward the project. However, improved perceived procedural…

▼ The study was designed and carried out to find out the criteria that govern the selection of news at the Daily Graphic. The study focused particularly on the front page news. The study was also intended to assess what informs the choice of certain news items over others and why some news items are presented prominently on the front page over others. Three methods were used in this study: a survey, content analysis and in-depth interviews. Seventy-two editions of the Daily Graphic and in all, 202 news items were content analysed. The study found that although news values is vital in news selectivity, the Daily Graphic did not use news values as the sole criterion for news selection. What is important is whether a particular news story was in the interest of the general public and that it had a high range. That is to say, such a news story affected the majority of Ghanaians.

▼ The effects of the public sector reform impacted on all aspects of public services including the performance of the economy. Central to this argument was the re-organization of the operations of the public service from the traditional administration system to the new public management (NPM). Education, a critical service in any economy was not spared. Literatures around the application of NPM (a derivative of market principles and practices) to education (which was value based) suggested
that NPM was dangerous for education and could deplete the value system of education and replace
that with a focus on accounting for money by individuals who were self-interested and who would seek to maximize their benefit with guile. Arguments against NPM suggested
that the human factor was neglected and
that education had led to chaos among professionals, stakeholders and students. However, those who argued for the introduction of NPM suggested
that it had made the provision of education more efficient, effective and relevant to the needs to the clients. It held those working in the education sector accountable for the resources used and made the system more responsive to the needs of the clients of education. Education in the Cook Islands experienced many changes since western type education was introduced by the Missionaries in the late 1800s. Cook Islands people
have always regarded education as a right and also believed their participation in education would improve their lives as well as positively contribute to economic growth. As the public sector reform was a global phenomenon, the currents of NPM also converged on the Cook Islands and affected the delivery of education. Those changes revolutionalized education in ways
that was not commonplace in the Cook Islands. However, professionals and stakeholders within education made the most of the system and diverged some of the practices to suit the need, the environment and the culture of the Cook Islands people. Change also refocused education from teachers teaching to student learning reinforcing the dedication of many teachers and education administrators to ensure NPM served the best interest of their clients; the students, despite the workload placed on them. The challenge in this thesis was to understand how the NPM system affected education and how the Cook Islands education professionals worked within the system in their favour. The stories of teachers and Ministry of Education professionals demonstrated
that there was no resistance to the application of NPM system in the Cook Islands. In fact, the system was embraced by the education sector suggesting it was a positive change from their previous system of traditional administration. Much of their system was inherited from New Zealand where the environment, layers of bureaucracy and economic status of the country was different. Instead, it appeared the Cook Islands took much of what others deemed as dangerous for education and turned it into a positive opportunity for the Cook Islands education. This thesis…

▼ School-based and after school interventions to encourage child participation in physical activity
use self-report surveys, among other methods, to assess level of physical activity. The current study investigated the face validity of nine physical activity self-report items used to evaluate the Fuel for Fun program, a nutrition and physical activity intervention for fourth graders administered in Colorado. A convenience sample of fourth graders demographically similar to Fuel for Fun participants in Colorado were cognitively interviewed to examine understanding and comprehension of
survey items. Qualitative content analysis of interview transcripts revealed
that 87.5% to 100% of students reported understanding the items and 50% to 92% provided responses congruent to reference definitions. Physical activity examples included in the items aided comprehension when students had vocabulary or reading issues. Minor revisions were suggested to mitigate vocabulary and format issues. Results supported face validity of the instrument with this sample.

▼ As research datasets and analyses grow in complexity, data
that could be valuable to other researchers and to support the integrity of published work remain uncurated across disciplines. These data are especially concentrated in the “Long Tail” of funded research where curation resources and related expertise are often inaccessible. In the domain of astronomy - which relies heavily on sophisticated instrumentation - it is undisputed
that “dark” uncurated data exist, along with data at risk of becoming dark in the future. However, the scope of the problem remains uncertain. The dissertation project described here implements a mixed-methods research approach to characterize the Long Tail in astronomy as well as the properties of uncurated and at-risk astronomical data, and to develop methods for locating potentially-useful data to be targeted for curation through indicators in the scholarly literature. This project aims to enhance our understanding of the nature and prevalence of astronomical dark data and characterize astronomy’s Long Tail by: conducting
interviews with experts; mapping the decision-making protocols used by astronomers while searching the astronomical literature for references to underlying data; and conducting a
survey of authors of journal publications with a questionnaire about the data associated with their papers. The project aims to deepen scholarly insight into domain-specific astronomy data practices, overall addressing epistemological claims
that enhanced data access and open science result in scientific knowledge and producing a characterization and theory of the distribution and accessibility of dark and at-risk data in astronomy.

▼ Background: The objective of this thesis was to identify a list of outcomes to consider in the development of a core outcome set (COS) to inform future studies on pregnancy-associated venous thromboembolism (VTE), with aim of standardizing outcome reporting.
Methods: We conducted a systematic review (Study-1) of 70 studies and 18 interviews (Study-2) with health service users and healthcare professionals, to generate a list of outcomes and inform a two-part online Delphi survey (Study-3).
Results: Studies-1 and 2 identified 35 and 57 outcomes, respectively, which were condensed to 45 unique outcomes. The Delphi survey included 81 participants in round-1 and 66 in round-2 including health service users, clinicians and academics, representing 21 countries.
Conclusion: We have attained consensus on outcomes that should be considered in the COS for future studies on pregnancy-associated VTE.

▼ This study examined how GPs in Wiltshire understood sustainable development and its implications for the NHS, their role as GPs and the factors that influenced their engagement with sustainability through an online survey followed by one to one qualitative interviews. The objectives were to better understand how GPs in Wiltshire understood sustainability, to identify gaps between the literature and GPs and to determine the factors that influenced the engagement of GPs with sustainability. The NHS has committed to more sustainable practices, setting a target of an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, which will require radical change in how healthcare is delivered. Proposals on how to achieve the radical transition to more sustainable NHS are emerging in a developing literature on sustainability, health and healthcare. However there is a knowledge gap as to the extent that the analysis of sustainable development and the NHS and proposals for a more sustainable NHS are shared by a broad section of health professionals. The findings indicated that research participants had complex and nuanced views towards sustainability and the NHS. Findings suggested broad levels of support for some sustainability, activities such as building the resilience of individuals and local communities alongside reservations about others such as taking environmental impact into account when making clinical decisions. Findings also provide a potential explanation of why this broad support may not motivate change. Interview and survey data that suggested that sustainability was remote or an afterthought provide an indication of the leadership, resources and guidance necessary to change practices. The study contributes new knowledge about how this vital group of health professionals understand and engage with sustainability. The study suggests that sustainability should be communicated in terms of improvement in healthcare and the future viability of the NHS alongside clear commitments to sustainability in terms of leadership, strategic integration and organisational incentives.

▼ Currently one can experience a growing awareness of a global phenomenon: an unprecedented level of migration. For the time being, over 244 million individuals live outside their home countries worldwide. The phenomenon of migration became a pressing political issue simultaneously on different continents, urging the governments of the states to create new strategies in order to handle the unexpected influx of immigrants and the accompanying problems reaching the cultural level of societies.
The present research investigates the factors that contribute to Mexico s transition from a traditional sending country to a new destination of migrants. Mexico has a long history as a producer of migrants and serves as a traditional transit country for migrants on their way to the United States. Opinions differ, but many experts believe that in recent years the nature of migration flows in Mexico has significantly changed, since Mexico is increasingly becoming a destination country.
The research is based on a sociological approach and a mixed methodology, with the purpose of analyzing information collected from academic studies, policy documents, personal experiences, semi-structured interviews, and an online survey. The research explores the issue of migration from a more personal , qualitative approach. The goal of the thesis is: discover as many aspects of the issue as possible and confront the information gathered during the research process and background studies in the findings section. Although the results show that Mexico still plays mainly the role of a sending and transit country, there are significant ongoing changes in migration flows. The paper discusses the recent events mostly related to the current U.S. policy - the appearance of new ethnicities among migrants, and the increasing importance of leisure migration in Mexico.

▼ Financial elder abuse is gaining increasing attention from researchers and policy makers. Such abuse can include theft of money as well as misuse of assets such as property. This research applied judgement analysis methodology to explore professional decision making in the context of such abuse and to identify the nature of the cues used to detect and prevent abuse. Participants included social care, health and banking professionals, who were established as key decision makers. In Phase I, semi-structured interviews (n = 63) were conducted. The critical incident technique was used to identify cue use and decisions taken in the most recent case experienced. Key cues for both social care and health professionals included the nature of the 'financial problem suspected', the older persons 'mental capacity' and the 'identifier of the abuse', this being whether the abuse was directly observed or instead reported by a third party. A separate cue used by health professionals was the individual's 'physical capacity'. Banking professionals did not use physical or mental capacity as cues, but independently considered 'who was in charge of the money'. Decisions made by social care professionals included determining whether safeguarding procedures should be implemented. In Phase II, a factorial survey approach was applied whereby social care, health and banking professionals (n=223) were presented with case scenarios incorporating the cues from Phase I in addition to cues from literature review. Multiple regression analysis and incremental F-tests identified the cues that explained a significant amount of the variance in judgements of certainty of abuse and likelihood of taking action. For example, for social care and health professionals this included the older person's mental capacity, and the nature of the financial problem suspected. The findings could be used to develop a training tool to enable other professionals to improve their strategies for detection and prevention of financial elder abuse.

▼ Vehicles searching for on-street parking create environmental and economic externalities through increasing network traffic flow and congestion, heightening pollutant emission levels, creating additional noise, giving rise to time delays for through vehicles, and leading to potential safety hazards caused by vehicles manoeuvring into or out of on-street spaces. Despite extensive negative impacts on individual drivers and on society, parking search is an under-researched area, particularly in more recent years and within the UK. Furthermore, current statistical modelling techniques applied to parking search time have not utilised a more comprehensive analysis in which hierarchically structured data on multiple levels could be addressed. The aim of this thesis, therefore, is to investigate and compare the factors that influence drivers urban on-street parking search time and its policy implications. A mixed methods approach was applied that comprised qualitative interviews conducted with local government authority Council Officers and a quantitative revealed preference on-street parking survey (sample size, 1,002 observations) undertaken in four cities in the East Midlands region of the UK in order to obtain individual driver-level socio-economic and other parking related factors that may influence parking search time. Statistically significant variables for each of the cities were identified by employing separate linear regression models. A multilevel mixed-effects model in which drivers (Level 1) are nested within streets (Level 2) was then applied to the pooled dataset. Significant factors in the multilevel (street level) model were identified as: time of arrival at a parking place (for which every time period after the 07:00-07:59 reference case indicated increased search time); parking habit; parking tariff; the number of parking places previously visited (on the same trip); trip time from origin to parking place; area type; trip purpose; weather; vehicle type; and walking time from a parking place to a destination. Comparison of the factors that influence parking search time revealed important differences in statistically significant variables and coefficient values between the single-level and multilevel regression modelling approaches. Policy recommendations based upon the findings of the parking survey, modelling analysis, and further interviews conducted with local authority Council Officers, focus around time of arrival at a parking place, area type, parking charges and the potential technological advances that, if implemented, could have a considerable effect on parking search times within urban areas. Robust data collection and subsequent monitoring of parking search activity within each city should be undertaken in order to provide an evidence base which would support the introduction of future policy measures to reduce parking search activity.

▼ Teacher evaluation literature presents a history
that reflects the increasing need to account for the role of the teacher in the classroom. Extensive research has identified a series of best teaching practices but not a means to know in what context they work best, nor why they do not work for some students. Recently, student surveys provide a snapshot into teacher practices as well. This study held student conversations with underachieving and high achieving students to seek answers to the following two questions: What perspectives can students provide about what influences their achievement in the classroom? How do students perceptions of their teachers' expectations, behaviors, and attitudes impact these students' success? The specificity of the responses shows thoughtfulness and depth from each student, whether high achieving or underachieving, and offers additional validation
that students know effective teaching. The data from twelve
interviews suggest structured
interviews should occur if the process is focused as an exploration of continuous teacher improvement undertaken with the practitioner and the observer. Further, the data suggest
that underachieving students focus on needs for task completion, the opportunity to pass the class, and extra time to finish work. In addition, they see themselves as accountable and responsible for their own achievement as opposed to partnering in learning and success with their teachers. Several questions arise from the dichotomies presented in the study which focus on understanding what students can be taught to close these achievement gaps. The study suggests structured student
interviews provide data as accurate as a trained evaluator and the feedback and improvements students provide could improve teaching during a course. The data suggest
that underachieving students
have a different understanding of education than high achieving students do which points to a need for further research to determine how to target interventions or understandings to improve student achievement.'

L’ultima ricerca " Understanding of the concept of “craft” – from the perspective of Italian consumers " è un'indagine finalizzata a capire le percezioni del consumatore in merito all’artigianato e le sue preferenze per i diversi tipi di prodotti artigianali. Grazie all’intrinseca interdisciplinarietà di questa tesi, che collega diverse basi teoriche e discipline come sociologia, economia, arte, filosofia e storia sociale, si cercherà di colmare le attuali lacune presenti nella ricerca sull'artigianato offrendo, così, un nuovo contributo in materia.
This thesis aims to deepen the meaning of ‘craft’ by looking at the concept from the perspective of different stakeholders, including 1) Guilds and Chambers of Commerce; 2) businesses, providers and experts and 3) consumers. The overarching purpose of this dissertation is to summarize recent developments, to highlight the state of the art and to offer some critical observations of various understandings of the concept of artisanship, in order to identify conceptual gaps and limitations and directions for future research. This dissertation includes three studies: Study 1 - “Artisanship: A review of the conceptualization of the “craftmanship” – employs content analysis to examine definitions of ‘artisanship’ provided by different sources from Craft Foundations and Associations, international and intergovernmental organizations, and European Chambers of Commerce. Study 2 – “Crafting the craft – evidence from Italian experts” is based on a qualitative methodology and includes semistructured interviews with managers and experts of artisanal products. Study 3 – “Understanding of the concept of “craft” – from the perspective of Italian consumers” is a survey aimed at investigating consumer perceptions of artisanship and preference for different types of artisanal products. By bridging different theoretical bases and disciplines, such as sociology,…

▼ Primary school teacher education in Botswana has
undergone a tremendous change in recent years. The former two-year
Primary Teaching Certificate has been phased
out and replaced by a
three-year diploma in primary education. In the three-year teacher
training programme, students
have the liberty to specialize in two
subjects. Since teacher education plays a pivotal role in the
efficiency and effectiveness of delivery of the curriculum, it is
envisaged
that the three-year programme will adequately equip
students to ensure efficient and effective syllabi delivery. It is
on this premise
that this study examined the training of primary
school teachers for musical arts education in Botswana’s colleges
of primary education. It further identifies the problems in the
teacher training programme and proposes ways in which the music
training programme could be improved. The research was
conducted
following a
survey method in which data collection techniques of
questionnaires,
interviews and observations were used. Primary
school teachers responded to the questionnaire and some were
observed. College lecturers were interviewed. In addition, some
important insights were obtained from literature and
have been
incorporated in this study. Information obtained revealed
that
students are admitted at the colleges of education with little or
no formal music education and this makes it difficult for them to
choose music as an area of specialisation. The syllabi
that are
used for the two music categories do not differ much; there is
inadequate allocation of time for music lessons. The syllabi do not
cover much African music, concentrating more on Western
educationists than on African ones. Colleges of education lack
resources for effective training and the emphasis is more on the
theoretical aspect than the practical component. The study
indicates
that teachers are of the opinion
that the training they
undergo does not adequately equip them to face the challenges of
the CAPA (Creative and Performing Arts) syllabus - which deals with
practical subjects of which music is one. Consequently, very few
activities are employed when teaching the CAPA syllabus at primary
schools. Primary schools also lack musical instruments. Teachers
are unable to integrate music with other art forms because the
training does not include the integration of arts education. These
are some of the problems faced by the teacher training as revealed
by this study. The research proposes ways in which the admission
can be done and the syllabus for musical arts education which can
then be used at colleges. There are also recommendations to be
considered by the Ministry of Education, music educators and
parents, in order to improve musical arts education in
Botswana.

▼ Obesity and related diseases such as type two diabetes, cardio vascular diseases, cholesterol, cancer etc. affect negatively the health and the socioeconomic welfare of all New Zealanders. Care for obese patients
have financial and practical implications, including risks to patients and health professionals, the need for special equipment and training, and prolonged rehabilitation. In addition, obese individuals displace other people in need of treatment. The increasing number of New Zealanders exposed to these diseases is raising public concern among scientists, stakeholders and politicians. One of the solutions to counteract obesity and related diseases could come from the application of new technology and personalised food nutrition. As a result, this study aims at exploring public acceptance of nutrigenomics and personalised nutrition in New Zealand. The public acceptance towards the introduction of new technology will be assessed by estimating the willingness to pay for a nutrigenomics test. Furthermore, consumers’ willingness to follow personalised food recommendations deriving from the nutrigenomics test was evaluated exploring by preferences and willingness to pay for a diet containing a bundle of functional foods. Since socio-economic and demographic characteristics of consumers are losing their explanatory power, protection motivation theory was employed to explore the impact of psychological constructs on willingness to pay for nutrigenomics and personalised food nutrition. The objective was reached using both qualitative and quantitative research methods. As regards to qualitative research, four consumer focus groups
interviews were
conducted between June and September 2009 to obtain insights about concern for diet related diseases, factors influencing healthy food choice and public acceptance of nutrigenomics test and personalised nutrition based on a bundle of functional foods. Focus group results show
that participants were mainly concerned about heart and cardiovascular diseases, whereas obesity was not perceived as a disease. Foods containing high levels of sugar and saturated fats were identified as being responsible for people unhealthy weight. The main constrains behind healthy food choices appeared to be time and price. Information in food labels was often too hard to understand. In addition, participants were unfamiliar with the concepts of nutrigenomics and functional foods but not with the consumption of the latter products.
These inputs were used to develop a contingent valuation
survey, which was administered by means of a questionnaire between January and March 2010.
Survey results showed
that that nearly 75% of respondents were willing to accept the introduction of the new technology but they were suspicious about the way in which information will be used by society. The expected mean of willingness to pay for the nutrigenomics test was NZ409.49 and
that for personalised nutrition based on a regular consumption of a bundle of functional foods was NZ52.84 a week. Estimates show
that…

▼ Improving the effectiveness and efficiency of medication error reporting is key to enhancing patient safety. The aim of this research was to explore medication error reporting in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), examining the attitudes, beliefs, behaviors and experiences of health professionals. The first phase was a Joanna Briggs Institute registered systematic review of the beliefs, attitudes and experiences of health professionals relating to medication error reporting. Findings indicated the need for original research employing a mixed methods approach to quantify and generate in-depth information, grounded in theories of behaviour change. In the second phase, a cross-sectional survey of health professionals in the UAE was conducted to determine the behavioural determinants and facilitators and barriers of medication error reporting. Principal component analysis of responses from 294 health professionals identified six components: knowledge and skills related; feedback and support related; action and impact related; motivation related; effort related; and emotions. Responses were neutral for the motivation and effort related components, but negative for the emotions component. Comparison of component scores identified that, nurses, females, those with greater experience and being older were more likely to be positive in their responses (p<0.05). In terms of emotions, the component with the lowest scores, older respondents with greater experience gave more positive responses (p<0.05). In the final phase, face-to-face semi-structured interviews with 29 health professionals explored in-depth the behavioural determinants of medication errors reporting in the UAE. The theoretical domains framework was employed in constructing the interview schedule and interpreting the findings. ‘Goals’ and ‘intentions’ were determinants which acted as facilitators while ‘beliefs of the consequences’, ‘emotions’,’ ‘social influences and environmental context’ were barriers. This doctoral research has generated original findings which can support the development of interventions, based on behaviour change techniques, to enhance medication error reporting. These changes could impact at the levels of the organisation, health professional and patient.

▼ The overall aim of this dissertation is to generate a theory explaining the variation in the way the Spaniards, particularly the Spanish women, designate female professionals. Three different studies are included, the first one a quantitative survey on how the use of the three main strategies for referring to female professionals (the feminine: la abogada; the common gender: la abogado; lexical modification: mujer abogado) is determined by the sex, the age and the educational level of the speakers. The material consists of 40 professions and includes job titles of various types, representing different socioeconomic levels in the Spanish society.
The results show that 18 of the 40 professsions are used in the feminine, 22 in the common gender and, consequently, no profession is used in the third variant by the majority of the informants. The conclusions regarding the impact of the social factors confirm a majority use of feminine designations by the women, the oldest age group and the speakers with the highest level of education, respectively. However, the differences between the groups are marginal counted in absolute numbers.
The analysis of the extent to which the informants are ready to accept the feminine of the professions demonstrate the highest values in the following groups: the women, the youngest age group and the informants with the lowest educational level.
The results of the qualitative study show that several factors influence the election of variant in the 22 cases not used in the feminine according to the first study, which indicates the predomination of idiosyncrasy in this field.
Due to the small differences between the groups concerning the feminine use, the aim of the third study is to find out what factors determine the female use. In 31 in-depth interviews, cards illustrating different professions, practised by both men and women, are presented and discussed. The analysis of this study is couched within the Grounded Theory framework, according to which the aim is to generate a new theory, not to confirm an existing one. Such a theory is entirely grounded in the empiric data that emerge throughout the analysis, when data are compared for similarities and formed into categories. The core category – existence in our study – is the one which accounts for most of the variation around the concern. Thus, the prerequisite of the use of a feminine title is its approval by the Royal Spanish Academy. However, its power is twofold. The academic norm is prescriptive only in non-existing cases, since nobody uses, unless in very specific contexts, a feminine title that is not accepted. In the opposite case, the use of the feminine is optional and determined by the factors awareness, presence, habit, aesthetics, attitude and idiosyncrasy.
To ensure the highest degree of reliability and validity of our final conclusions, the last step consists of triangulating the three studies.

▼ Many organizations have transitioned from single-systems development to product-line development with the goal of increasing productivity and facilitating mass customization. Variability modelling is a key activity in software product-line development that deals with the explicit representation of variability using dedicated models. Variability models specify points of variability and their variants in a product line. Although many variability-modelling notations and tools have been designed by researchers and practitioners, very little is known about their usage, actual benefits or challenges. Existing studies mostly describe product-line practices in general, with little focus on variability modelling. We address this gap through a qualitative study on variability-modelling practices in medium- and large-scale companies using two empirical methods: surveys and interviews. We investigated companies' variability-modelling practices and experiences with the aim to gather information on 1) the methods and strategies used to create and manage variability models, 2) the tools and notations used for variability modelling, 3) the perceived values and challenges of variability modelling, and 4) the core characteristics of their variability models. Our results show that variability models are often created by re-engineering existing products into a product line. All of the interviewees and the majority of survey participants indicated that they represent variability using separate variability models rather than annotative approaches. We found that developers use variability models for many purposes, such as the visualization of variabilities, configuration of products, and scoping of products. Although we observed that high degree of heterogeneity exists in the variability-modelling notations and tools used by organizations, feature-based notations and tools are the most common. We saw huge differences in the sizes of variability models and their contents, which indicate that variability models can have different use cases depending on the organization. Most of our study participants reported complexity challenges that were related mainly to the visualization and evolution of variability models, and dependency management. In addition, reports from interviews suggest that product-line adoption and variability modelling have forced developers to think in terms of a product-line scenario rather than a product-based scenario.

▼ Police services in Canada were historically self-regulating institutions that managed internally their administrative affairs and allegations of professional misconduct. In recent decades, however, there has been an inexorable movement to external review in many Western nations, including Canada, whereby civilians have become increasingly involved in the administrative oversight of policing and the investigation of complaints about alleged misconduct. Research on how police have responded to these developments is sparse and overwhelmingly non-Canadian.
This study examines the attitudes and experiences of police officers pertaining to three types of civilian-led agencies that govern police practices and conduct in Ontario, Canada. To wit:
i) Police Services Boards, which provide administrative and financial governance of police services;
ii) The Special Investigation Unit (SIU), which investigates instances where citizens have been seriously harmed, killed or allegedly sexually assaulted while in the care of the police; and
iii) The Office of the Independent Police Review Director (OIPRD), which reviews and sometimes investigates citizens’ complaints about police conduct.
A mixed-methods sequential explanatory research design was utilized in this study. In Phase 1: Survey Questionnaire, 1593 police officers from a large police service in Ontario responded to an online survey questionnaire that queried them about their experiences and perceptions in relation to the three previously-mentioned agencies and about their own police service’s Professional Standards Bureau. In Phase 2: Semi-structured interviews, 40 interviews were conducted with police officers from the same police service and six interviews were conducted with senior executive representatives from stakeholder organizations in Ontario and across Canada.
Results from both the survey questionnaire and the interviews revealed that most police officers were generally accepting of the need for civilian-led oversight initiatives to uphold accountability and public trust in policing. However, this study found that many police officers queried the qualifications (i.e., knowledge, skills, training and experience) of the involved civilian investigators and administrators. Respondents also raised concerns about issues of “procedural justice” (e.g., the quality and frequency of communication during investigations; speed of investigations; notification regarding the outcome) during the course of both civilian-led and police-led investigations into alleged misconduct. Although the majority of respondents expressed a preference for alleged misconduct to be investigated by their own Professional Standards Bureau rather than by personnel from the SIU or the OIPRD, evidence was mixed on the extent to which police officers perceived that civilian oversight agencies pose a significant threat or challenge to their status as “professionals.” Many respondents opined that police officers are more closely scrutinized than other professional/occupational groups and are held…

▼ This study focused on the role of and the relationship between the traditional apprenticeship system and cooperative education in British Columbia (BC) as experiential strategies to facilitate the transition from school to work. A literature review traced the conceptual foundations, origins and evolution of apprenticeship training and cooperative education and their interaction in the training of apprentices. Thereafter, the provision of the school-to-work strategies in Canada on federal and provincial levels with special reference to British Columbia was described.
The literature indicated
that apprenticeship has remained the principal route for the training of skilled blue-collar workers. However, the relevance of apprenticeship has been questioned. Although the apprenticeship system has not essentially changed in BC, the system has become increasingly regulated. Industry, advocates of more flexible training delivery methods and the BC Provincial Government through Bill 34
have challenged apprenticeship training.
Cooperative education originated as a result of individual thinking, a changing society and system of post-secondary education linked to industry's training needs. It has grown in number, application, fields of study and constituency and its mode of operation has been modified to meet institutional needs. There are strong indications
that the cooperative model has been an effective educational model, particularly in training apprentices within the traditional apprenticeship system.
Thus, a need arose to explore the level of satisfaction of employers with cooperative education as a valid methodology to train apprentices within the context of the new apprenticeship training model in British Columbia. An empirical investigation combining quantitative and qualitative approaches
conducted in two phases was
conducted. A
survey with a random sample of employees and semi-structured
interviews with a small sample of employees selected by purposeful sampling were undertaken to explore perceptions and experiences of employers who
have been involved with both training methods during the last four years.
The research design is described including the selection of participants, data gathering and analysis. The main findings emerging from the data are presented and integrated with the findings of the literature. The study concludes with a set of recommendations for practice and with recommendations for future research.

▼ The standardised survey interview is a highly structured form of interaction. Interviewers ask questions from a script, and respondents select one of the pre-formulated answers. However, interviewers and respondents do more than just their pre-allocated tasks. This study approaches survey interviews from an original perspective, entering the stage after the scripted question has been released into the interactional space. Interviewers and respondents switch roles, the interviewers becoming recipients of the respondents’ talk. Questionnaires cannot provide for all the contingencies that arise in the interaction following the scripted question. Using Conversation Analysis and phonetic analysis of the interaction, the ways in which participants deal with these contingencies as they arise is explored in this dissertation. Interviewers employ response tokens to perform the task of answer recipient. In Dutch survey interviews the response token 'ja' ('yes') is used in several sequential positions, performing different actions. Analyses show that the token can be employed as a continuer token, as a receipt token, or as a mere acknowledgement of the prior talk. Moreover, through phonetic analyses it was found that the same token in a similar sequential position can perform different actions when it is realised with a different prosody. Respondents perform meaningful actions when they do not simply select one of the answer categories. Interviewees perform a range of actions with these expanded and non-conforming response turns. Minimal expansions are used to indicate imprecision, or to indicate the connectedness of the present answer with a previous answer. More extensive expansios are employed to resist the dichotomy that is set up by a yes/no-question or they can be used to resist presumptions embedded in the question. Responses that do not contain any of the answer categories ('non-conforming' responses) can be employed to perform similar actions to expanded answers. An interesting finding of this study is that the design of the non-conforming response influences whether the interviewer accepts that response or decides to probe for an answer in terms of one of the answer categories (or a 'type-conforming' answer). Non-conforming responses that start with hesitations, followed by 'nou' ('well'), and that contain an explicit or implicit contrast are treated as unacceptable, while responses that do not contain these features of a dispreferred turn are treated as acceptable. Finally, interviewers need to deal with these responses, always balancing the rules of standardisation with the goal of obtaining recordable answers. Their uptake of non-conforming responses ranges from simple acceptance to repeating the entire question. Interviewers may also reformulate the respondent's turn into one of the answer categories, and provide prompts when confronted with non-response. While only the exact repeat conforms to the rules of standardisation, phonetic analyses show that interviewers adjust the delivery of the redoing to the…
