▼ Water treatment issues are a problem worldwide. More and more gold mines are being opened in Africa and other parts of the world; these mines employ the carbon-inleach technique to recover gold from complex cyanide solution. The resulting process waste streams are high in cyanide, nitrate-N/ nitrite-N and in some cases arsenic. This thesis research looks at the design and evaluation of an electrochemical bioreactor for nitrogen and arsenic removal from contaminated water. Initial test results obtained by passing a mine's contaminated water through a conventional up flow bioreactor showed 100% nitrate-N and 85% arsenic removed for an initial arsenic and nitrate-N of 2,000 ppb and 50,000 ppb, respectively. The flow rate was 0.74 ml/min with a residence time of 2 days for the circuit of 3 reactors. Using the gathered information and improved reactor configurations, the design of the electrochemical bioreactor was tested. The performance of the electrochemical bioreactor was compared with a conventional up flow bioreactor with the same features as the electrochemical bioreactor but without applied potential. Results show that for a feed solution of 2,000 ppb of arsenic and 50,000 ppb nitrate-N; arsenic, nitrate-N and nitrite-N removal rates achieved was 100 % in both reactors at a nutrient addition of 4.0 g/ liter of contaminant solution at a contaminant feed rate to reactor of 5.042 liters per day. In a bid to optimize the reactors further with less nutrient addition, the arsenic concentration of solution coming out of the tail end of reactor without applied potential (Rl) stabilized at 75 ppb with nutrient addition at 2.0 g TSB per liter of contaminant solution. With the same concentration of 2000 ppb arsenic in the feed, the tail solution coming out of reactor with applied potential (R2) stabilized at 35 ppb with a batch nutrient addition rate of 2.0 g TSB per liter of contaminant solution and an applied potential of IV. Nitrate-N and nitrite-N removal rate remained at 100% in both reactors at 2.0 g TSB per liter of contaminant solution. The electrochemical bioreactor reactor with applied potential (R2) thus has an improved combined removal rate of arsenic and nitrate-N as compared to the conventional bioreactor in the two week period of testing. Additionally, it was also observed that arsenic remaining in solution after the passage of 2000 ppb arsenic contaminant solution through the reactors averaged 20 ppb, both at the bottom and the top of the conventional up-flow bioreactor. However, with the increasing reduction gradient from the bottom to the top due to the applied potential, a further reduction in arsenic at the top of the electrochemical bioreactor was the case with the bottom and top arsenic levels averaging 20 ppb and 0 ppb, respectively, for the nutrient addition rate of 4.0 g TSB per liter of contaminant solution. v

Objektem je třípodlažní zdravotnické zařízení s odlišným uspořádáním hygienických zařízení v každém podlaží. The theoretical part deals with solving the problem of legionella bacteria, specifically how to prevent it and what to do in case of detecting it. drainage, gas installations in building and the object's connection to the present technical networks hardware. The object is a three-story medical facility with a different arrangement of sanitary facilities on each floor. The project was designed by contemporary Czech and European regulations.

▼ Abandoned metal mines in the Tamar catchment, south west England, represent a significant threat to surface water quality via generation of acid mine waters. Currently the River Tamar fails environmental quality standards (EQS) established under the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) for dissolved Cu (x ̅ = 0.19 ± 0.05 μmol L-1) and Zn (x ̅ = 0.19 ± 0.06 μmol L-1, both 1997-2007) downstream of historic mining area of Gunnislake. The aim of this study was to quantify the risk to surface water quality by diffuse drainage generated by mine waste tips. For the first time, a GIS model was compiled and used to generate a priority list of known areas of mine waste, based on physical and environmental factors. The methodology was consistent with European guidance documentation published to meet the requirements of the Mining Waste Directive (2001/21/EC) and has since been applied, in a modified form, to other catchments in south west England. Two study sites, with contrasting mineralogy and hydrology, scored highly in the model and were the subject of field investigations from 2007-2009. These were Devon Great Consols (DGC), an abandoned Cu-As mine near Gunnislake and Wheal Betsy (WB), an abandoned Pb-Ag mine, near Mary Tavy. At each site, surface waters and shallow groundwaters were sampled and analysed for dissolved metals (including Al, Cu, Zn, Mn, Pb, Ni, and Cd), metalloids (As, Sb), major ions and anions. Samples of four selected mine waste tips were also gathered and subjected to a range of laboratory leaching experiments including the novel application of a dynamic upflow percolation test, based on an existing European method (CEN TS 14405). Leachates generated by the waste tips in the field were highly variable and elevated with respect to EQS for Al (up to 1850 μmol L-1), Cu (570 μmol L-1), Zn (34 μmol L-1), Ni (3.8 μmol L-1), Cd (0.17 μmol L-1), Mn (216 μmol L-1), Fe(537 μmol L-1) , As (380 μmol L-1) and Sb (5.4 μmol L-1). Estimated annual fluxes of dissolved metals were predicted using average rainfall data and catchment areas calculated in ArcHydro9 to estimate the annual discharge of waters from the tip. These calculations showed annual contaminant flux from the tips to exceed, or be of the same order of magnitude to, major adit discharges in the catchment (e.g. Cu 50900-66900 mol y-1 at DGC and 470 mol y-1 Cd at WB) and represented a significant contributor to metal flux in the Tamar catchment. Primary sulphide minerals in the waste were generally highly altered and metals (Pb, Cu, Zn, and Mn) and As were found to be strongly associated with secondary iron minerals, precipitated under oxic conditions. In finer wastes, sorption to clay minerals was also found to be very important for the retention of dissolved metals, particularly Pb. Concentrations of contaminants in column field leachates were similar for most metals (Cu, Zn, Mn, Ni and Cd) and may provide a useful tool for prediction of leachate composition. ▼ O objetivo desta dissertação foi mostrar o cenário atual e as perspectivas para o setor de saneamento básico do Estado de Roraima. Destacou-se o perfil dos serviços de abastecimento de água, coleta de esgotos e coleta de lixo. Foram utilizadas diversas publicações, especialmente as do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística/IBGE, com destaque para a Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios/PNAD e o Censo Demográfico 2000, que forneceram dados da população urbana do Estado atendida e não atendida pelos serviços de saneamento básico. Dessa forma, foi realizada a comparação dos resultados obtidos para o Estado com algumas cidades brasileiras, regiões do país, além de outros países. Sob esse aspecto, os resultados apurados apontaram que 96,9% dos domicílios urbanos do Estado, são atendidos pelos serviços de abastecimento de água, superando a realidade nacional. Quanto à coleta de esgotos, os resultados são preocupantes, uma vez que apenas 17,3% dos domicílios urbanos do Estado são atendidos por este serviço. Já a coleta de lixo 97,1% dos domicílios urbanos do Estado possui acesso a esse serviço. Constatou-se, ainda, que a maior parte do lixo coletado no Estado de Roraima é depositada a céu aberto, sem nenhum tratamento quanto às questões ambientais. Concluiu-se que a população urbana do Estado de Roraima apresenta ótimos resultados quanto ao acesso aos serviços de abastecimento de água e coleta de lixo. Contudo, a mesma situação não é observada quanto ao acesso aos serviços de coleta de esgotos, onde uma pequena parcela da população urbana é atendida. Nesse sentido, já existem recursos disponíveis para a universalização dos serviços de abastecimento de água e ampliação do sistema de esgoto sanitário. Entretanto, os recursos destinados a ampliação do sistema de esgotos ainda não é suficiente para atender a toda a população.
The objective of this thesis was to show the current scenario and prospects for the basic sanitation sector in the State of Roraima, showing the profile of the following services: water supply, waste sewage disposal and garbage collection. To obtain the data, various publications were used , especially the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), highlighting the National Survey of Home Sampling (PNAD) and the year 2000 Census which provided data on the urban population of the state with and without sanitation services. Thus, the results for the state were compared with other Brazilian cities, regions of the country and other countries. The findings indicate that 96.9% of urban households in the state are served by the water supply, surpassing the national reality, while the sewage disposal results are worrisome as only 17.3% of urban households in the state are served. As for garbage collection, 97.1% of urban households of the state have access to this service. It was further observed that most of the garbage collected in the state of Roraima is deposited in the open, without any form of treatment for environmental concerns. drainage (AMD) is wastewater generated by mine and industrial activity with typically high heavy metal and sulphur content potentially resulting in toxic wastewater upon exposure to dissolved oxygen,
water and micro-organisms. Due to the hazardous consequences of untreated AMD, treatment methods such as semi-passive biotic treatments, including constructive wetlands and microbial bioreactors were developed. Microbial bioreactors rely on suitable carbon sources such as ethanol, grasses and manure and the creation of anaerobic conditions for the reduction of sulphate, chemical oxidizable organic matter (COD) and to neutralise pH. Domestic wastewater sludge has also been identified as an economical and readily available carbon source that allows the treatment of both AMD and domestic wastewater.
A synthetic medium simulating the COD and the biological degradable organic matter (BOD) of domestic wastewater sludge was formulated to exclude variations in the evaluation of domestic wastewater sludge as carbon source in the treatment of AMD. Firstly the BOD and COD of anaerobic domestic wastewater sludge was determined and used as parameters in the formulation of the synthetic medium. A ratio of 1:1 AMD: synthetic domestic wastewater sludge (SDWWS) was the optimum ratio in terms of sulphate and COD removal.
Secondly, medical drip bags were used as anaerobic bioreactors to determine the microbial diversity in AMD treated with SDWWS using different variables. Data analyses from next generation sequencing showed that Chlorobium spp. dominated the 90 d pioneer trials at relative percentages of 68 % and 76 %. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images and the bright green colour of the liquid contents confirmed the data analyses. Sulphates and COD were removed at > 98 % and > 85 %, respectively.
A shorter incubation time was investigated in the 30 d pioneer trial. Chlorobium spp. was dominant, followed by Magnetospirillum spp. and Ornithobacterium spp. The liquid content changed to a dark brown colour. COD and sulphate concentrations were reduced by 60.8 % and 96 %, respectively, within 26 d, after which a plateau was reached. The effect of an established biofilm in the bioreactors showed that Chlorobium spp. also dominated approximately 62 %, in comparison to the 36 % in the 30 d pioneer trial. A sulphate and COD reduction of 96 % and 58 %, respectively, was obtained within 26 d and the liquid content
was the same colour as in the 30 d pioneer trial. It is possible that brown Green sulphur bacteria were present. Therefore, although Chlorobium spp. was present at a higher percentage as in the 30 d pioneer trial, the removal of COD and sulphate was similar. During the 30 d trials a white precipitant formed at the top of the bioreactors, consisting primarily of sulphate and carbon that was also indicative of the presence of Chlorobium spp. Incubation at reduced temperature reduced sulphates by only 10 % and COD by 12 % after 17 d, followed by a plateau. O presente projecto diz respeito ao trabalho final de mestrado, com vista à obtenção do grau de mestre em engenharia civil, no ramo de hidráulica. O mesmo pretende mostrar a metodologia de dimensionamento da totalidade das instalações hidráulicas prediais, num contexto Angolano, emborafictício, dado que os elementos de base fornecidos pela empresa EACE - Engenheiros Associados –Consultores em Engenharia, Lda, foram compostos pelas peças desenhadas da Arquitectura de um Hotel de 4 Estrelas executado em Lisboa, tendo sido necessário adaptar no âmbito da concepção contextual aplicada à realidade Angolana, parte da Arquitectura do edifício, na zona da cave, com vista à execução da zona técnica dos reservatórios, das bombagens de abastecimento de água e do sistema de tratamento de água para o consumo humano do edifício.
Todo o processo de cálculo apresentado foi baseado em bibliografia da especialidade perfeitamente adequada à globalidade do sistema, mas também, e nunca menos importante, a toda a legislação regulamentar e normativa europeia aplicável a este contexto, tendo sido traduzido num ficheiro de cálculo com base no programa Excel.
Este trabalho contempla a estimativa da volumetria das reservas de água, de todo o cálculo das redes hidráulicas, dimensionamento e selecção de todos os equipamentos constituintes do sistema e ainda a elaboração de todas as peças desenhadas do projecto, pelo que, o presente documento deverá ser analisado em todas as suas vertentes, sendo elas o desenvolvimento do presente trabalho, os anexos de cálculo e as peças desenhadas, elementos estes na realidade complementares.
The following design relates to the Final Master’s Term Paper in civil engineering in the branch of
Hydraulics. Its purpose is to show the design methodology of the totality of hydraulic technical installation of a hotel located hypothetically in Angola.
The base information was provided by the company EACE – Engenheiros Associados – Consultores em Engenharia, Lda and it consisted in the architectural designs of a 4 star hotel executed in Lisbon, of which it was necessary to adapt part of the architecture of the building to the Angolan reality, in the basement, in order to design the technical area of the water reservoirs, pumping area and the water treatment system.
The design process used in this document was based in specialized literature, but also according to regulatory and normative legislation relating to this paper’s context, converted in a calculation file based in Excel software.

mine located in Butte, Montana, and is considered as the largest
Superfund site in U.S. This thesis presents the results of the
development and design of a novel remediation process for metal
production from Berkeley pit acid mine
drainage utilizing a
selective sequential precipitation (SSP) method. During this four
precipitation batch method, copper/zinc, aluminum, iron, and
manganese were precipitated as either sulfides or hydroxides,
sequentially. The average metal removal rates of the SSP batch
process were 90% and higher. In addition, recovery of copper/zinc,
aluminum, iron, and manganese were maximized at pH values of 3, 5,
6.5, and 9.5, respectively. Purity percentages of 90% and higher
were also obtained for all precipitates excluding aluminum.
Furthermore, 25% of ferrous ion was synthesized as high value
goethite (alpha-FeOOH) from Berkeley pit acid mine
drainage. It is
proposed that the developed selective sequential precipitation
(SSP) batch system can be applied towards the treatment of Berkeley
pit acid mine
drainage.

▼ Alkaline fly ash has been studied as a liming agent within coal refuse fills to reclaim acid-forming refuse. Previous studies focused on bulk blending ash with acid-forming (pyritic) refuse. A better representation of field conditions is a â pancake layerâ of ash above the refuse. A column study was initiated to evaluate the leachate chemistry from acid-forming refuse-ash bulk blends vs. ash over refuse layers. An acidic and an alkaline ash were blended with, or layered over, acid-forming refuse and sandstone and packed into columns which were leached with deionized
water twice a week for 24 weeks under unsaturated conditions. Leachates were analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity, and a suite of elements with a focus on the oxyanions of As, Cr, Mo, and Se. A sequential extraction procedure revealed a significant portion of the elements in the residual fraction for the refuse/spoil substrates and in metal-oxide bound fractions for the ashes prior to leaching, and a general trend for a greater proportion of oxyanion elements to be associated with metal oxide fractions after leaching. Bulk-blended treatments maintained higher leachate pH than corresponding layered treatments. The acidic ash and refuse pancaked treatments exhibited relatively high initial concentrations of most elements analyzed. Pancake layers of ash over refuse are an inadequate co-disposal method to prevent and mitigate acid mine
drainage. Blending alkaline ash with refuse to acid-base accounting specifications should improve leachate quality overall, but there may be
water quality concerns for loss of Se and other soluble ions during initial leaching events.

Este trabalho é o resultado da minha experiência enquanto estagiário no âmbito da conclusão do meu mestrado em Engenharia Civil – ramo Edificações. Durante um período de 6 meses – 1 de Março a 31 de Agosto de 2011, fui parte integrante da equipa do Departamento de Hidráulica da Empresa A400- Projectistas e Consultores de Engenharia Lda., especializada em projectos nas mais diversas áreas da construção civil.
Numa primeira parte desta exposição teórica, procurei descrever de forma sucinta mas abrangente o “modus operandi” da A400, bem como os seus valores e impacto no mercado internacional. Nesta acepção, centrei-me sobretudo no contributo do Departamento de Hidráulica, com todas as suas especificações e métodos de trabalho, visto que, por motivos já anteriormente mencionados, foi onde desempenhei um papel activo e interventivo nos vários projectos abordados ao longo destes seis meses.
Este trabalho resulta assim de uma análise e abordagem detalhadas, retiradas da minha experiência enquanto participante em dois projectos de destaque - a construção de uma Clínica, no Soyo – Angola, e a Creche da Associação de Moradores de
Massarelos, no Porto. Em ambos os projectos, procurei não apenas descrevê-los na sua generalidade, como evidenciar as principais dificuldades encontradas na sua concepção bem como as respectivas soluções adoptadas para as suprir.
No decorrer da análise detalhada a estes dois projectos, pude desenvolver um trabalho de cálculo inerente, no qual contribuí com a dinamização das ferramentas dadas pela empresa através do aperfeiçoamento das folhas de cálculo e opinando sobre métodos de trabalho e soluções inovadoras de desenho. Daqui resultaram melhorias significativas ao nível do desempenho dos colaboradores, visto que permitiram uma melhor interpretação e minimização dos erros de cálculo.

drainage and sanitation provisions with grave consequences to their health and living conditions. This thesis takes an analysis of the causes and consequences of that provision deficit as point of departure and seeks more effective mechanisms for inclusive and environmentally sustainable
drainage and sanitation implementation. This occurs at two levels. Firstly, there is the level of the developing cities in general, and secondly the level of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Despite political will for improvement and many ongoing urban upgrading projects, environmental agencies in Ho Chi Minh City appeared unable to meet the demand for adequate infrastructure. New fast-growing residential areas demonstrated a replication of the flooding and wastewater disposal problems, that are addressed in economically more important areas. The main cause seemed insufficient capacity in land and housing management. Small wastewater-treatment plants of hospitals, hotels, markets and residential projects, meant to reduce pollution in the absence of large-scale treatment works, showed serious shortcomings due to inadequate design and operation. As the mentioned provision deficit is analyzed as rooted in a top-down approach, with a too limited involvement of the users of systems, a more effective approach is sought in a bigger contribution of communities and private parties to project planning, implementation and operation, without denying the important role of government. The contribution of this thesis to a multi-stakeholder approach
drainage and sanitation planning is SANCHIS (Sanitation Choice Involving Stakeholders). This planning methodology brings about a learning process in which experts and non-experts are enabled to connect local experience with systemic knowledge, in order to generate, assess and select sustainable
drainage and sanitation solutions. The method is supported by a data-base which describes assessment criteria and 58
drainage and sanitation system options clustered into 12 groups. Subsequently, detailed descriptions of toilet, on-site treatment, transport, treatment, reuse and disposal technologies are presented. These enable the distinction between feasible and non-feasible system options in a situation under study and a comparison of performances of options. SANCHIS enables the application of material flow analysis of
water, organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus to identify the repartition of these substances over the gaseous, liquid and solid products of

▼ A disposição de rejeitos com potencial de geração de acidez e consequente geração de drenagem ácida de mina (DAM) é um dos grandes problemas ambientais enfrentados pela indústria da mineração de carvão, pois a disposição inadequada contamina a água e o solo. A DAM é uma solução aquosa caracterizada por possuir pH geralmente abaixo de 3 e diversos metais dissolvidos. Devido a essas características, a DAM representa grandes riscos ambientais, em especial, aos recursos hídricos, em consequência da solubilização e mobilização de metais pesados. Este problema requer estudos no sentido de encontrar soluções que venham a minimizar os danos causados ao meio ambiente. A utilização de metodologias alternativas para a disposição dos rejeitos de mineração de carvão constitui em uma estratégia básica para a viabilidade de tais empreendimentos. Visando atender a esta necessidade, o presente trabalho estudou o controle da geração da DAM pelo método de aditivos alcalinos com o uso de escória de aciaria elétrica do forno panela (EAE-FP). A metodologia do trabalho incluiu a caracterização dos materiais, ensaios estáticos e ensaios cinéticos. Os ensaios estáticos foram realizados pelo método de contabilização de ácidos e bases, enquanto que os ensaios cinéticos foram realizados pelo método de células úmidas. Após foi realizada a mistura do rejeito de carvão com a EAE-FP em diferentes dosagens e foram dispostas a céu aberto, sujeitas à precipitação pluviométrica. Esses ensaios tiveram por objetivo uma melhor compreensão dos materiais em ambiente controlado e expostos ao intemperismo. Os resultados demonstram que a água que percolou pelo rejeito de carvão apresentou-se ácida e a água que percolou pela EAE-FP, alcalina. Contudo, os problemas ambientais podem ser em grande parte resolvidos pela mistura do rejeito de carvão com EAE-FP em uma proporção de RC:EAE-FP 10:10 estabelecida pelos ensaios estáticos. Os ensaios cinéticos e o experimento ao ar livre demonstram que durante vários meses de ensaios, na proporção RC:EAE-FP 10:10, ocorre um aumento do pH e uma redução na liberação de acidez, metais e sulfatos na água lixiviada. Análises adicionais de toxicidade para o microcrustáceo (Daphnia similis), peixes (Pimephales promelas) e algas (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) mostraram que o lixiviado da proporção RC:EAE-FP 10:15, apresentou níveis menores de toxicidade do que o lixiviado da proporção RC:EAE-FP 10:10, além da redução na liberação da acidez, metais e sulfato. Os resultados demonstraram a eficácia do método na qualidade da água de percolação tanto em termos de pH, concentrações de metais e toxicidade do efluente. Pode-se concluir que o método de contabilização de ácidos e bases mostra-se adequado para definir a proporção de mistura dos materiais. Essas misturas podem ser empregadas no controle da DAM tanto em depósitos de rejeitos em superfícies como no retorno dos rejeitos de carvão para o subsolo.

Za izboljšanje komunikacije med komunalnim podjetjem in uporabnikom bi bilo smotrno uvesti dodatne komunikacijske kanale, ki uporabnikom ponujajo vpogled v uporabniške podatke in podajajo odgovore na vprašanja. Za čim bolj avtomatizirano posredovanje informacij, morajo komunalna podjetja dvigniti kakovost logistične podpore in s tem kvaliteto njihovih storitev.
Uporabniki komunalnih storitev smo pri dostopu do podatkov časovno omejeni, saj ima komunalno podjetje določene uradne ure. V času uradnih ur smo lahko odsotni, zato se moramo s komunalnim podjetjem uskladiti, da bi prišli do želenih informacij ob pravem času in na pravem mestu. Vožnja do komunalnega podjetja je za zaposlene v drugih regijah okoljsko in časovno zamudna.
Rešitev vidimo predvsem v načinih, ki bi uporabniku omogočala dostop do informacij in rešitev aktivnosti kjerkoli in kadarkoli. Z uvedbo spletnih portalov ima uporabnik možnost dostopa do informacij zgolj z dostopom do spleta in uporabniškimi podatki. Uporabnik lahko nemoteno uredi aktivnosti tudi ko komunalno podjetje nima uradnih ur.
V magistrskem delu predstavljamo infrastrukturo in različne tehnologije, ki so vir informacij in jih spletni portal distribuira uporabniku. Z uvedbo takšnih tehnologij se digitalizirajo tudi delovni procesi in nadzor nad delom znotraj komunalnega podjetja. Nove tehnologije se razvijajo vsak dan, zato je uvedba takšnih tehnologij postala nujna.
The master's thesis describes the problem of the user's access to information. To improve communication between utility companies and users, it would be wise to introduce additional communication channels that provide users with insights into user data and provide answers to questions. In order to maximize the automated functioning of information delivery, utility companies need to raise quality logistics support and thus the quality of their services.
The users of utility services are limited in time to access data, as the utility company has certain official hours. During office hours we may be absent, so we have to coordinate with utility companies to get the desired information at the right time and in the right place. For employees in other regions, driving to the public utility company is environmentally and time-consuming.
We see the solution primarily in ways that would allow the user to access information and solutions to activities anywhere and anytime. With the introduction of web portals, the user has the possibility to access information only with access to the Internet and user data. The user can edit the activities smoothly even when the utility company has no official hours.

▼ Gruvavfall, i form av gråberg, från Kiirunavaara-gruvan i Kiruna, norra Sverige undersöktes för att se om surt lakvatten kan bildas från gråberget och om detta kan ha en påverkan på hur mycket kväve som kan lakas ut från gråberget. För detta ändamål gjordes dels en mineralogisk undersökning av gråberget, med siktning, röntgendiffraktion (XRD) och grundämnesanalys och dels laborativa skakförsök. Från skakförsöken, där olika kornstorlekar (8-16 mm, 2-4 mm och mindre än 1 mm) blandades med avjoniserat vatten med L/S-kvoten 10, kunde förändringar i pH, alkalinitet och lösta joner undersökas över en 10-veckors period. De främsta mineralen i gråberget i Kiirunavaara visades vara plagioklas, kvarts och biotit. I gråberget finns även 18 g pyrit/kg gråberg. Skakförsöken indikerar att lakvattnet från gråberget i Kiirunavaara är alkaliskt med ett pH över 9. Vittring av sulfidmineral sker, men neutraliseras av buffrande mineral som kalcit och ingen potential till produktion av surt lakvatten finns. Kväveutlakningen sker främst under de första dygnen, men mer än hälften av de kväveföreningar som antas finnas i gråberget lakas inte ut. Både nitrat och ammonium visade signifikanta korrelationer med pH, där högre pH-värden tydde på högre nitratkoncentrationer och lägre pH-värden på högre ammoniumkoncentrationer. Detta indikerar att även om inget samband kunde ses mellan produktion av surt lakvatten och kväveutlakning, så är mängden av olika kväveföreningar som lakas ut beroende av lakvattnets pH-värde.
Mining waste rock from the Kiirunavaara-mine in northern Sweden was studied to determine if there is a potential for production of acid mine drainage (AMD), if there is a leaching of nitrogen compounds from the waste rock and if a correlation between the two processes can be seen. A mineralogical characterization of the waste rock was done through dry sieving, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and elemental analysis. Through shake flask experiments, where waste rock of three different grain sizes (8-16 mm, 2-4 mm and less than 1 mm) were mixed with deionized water (L:S-ratio of 10), the change in pH, alkalinity and dissolved ions during a 10-week period was determined. The waste rock in Kiirunavaara was found to consist mainly of plagioclase, quartz and biotite, but the waste rock also contains 18 g pyrite per kg waste rock. The shake flask experiments indicate that the mine drainage from the waste rock in Kiirunavaara is alkaline, with a pH above 9. Weathering of sulphide minerals occur, but are neutralised by buffering minerals such as calcite and thus no potential for AMD-production exists. The leaking of nitrogen compounds occurs mainly during the first few days. Both ammonium and nitrate showed significant correlations with pH, where lower pH-values typically exhibited higher ammonium concentrations, while higher pH-values correlated with higher nitrate concentrations.
