Masters Research - Master of Design (MDeS)

The fresh challenge for me in entering an RHD in Natural History was to find a significant area of research, as my background is in the visual arts, and I do not have an undergraduate degree in Natural History or Science. Fifteen years ago, my art practice was linked to issues of cultural identity, and as such I exhibited in institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, and the Australian Embassy in Tokyo. As a visual artist, I received a grant from the Australia Council to research my cultural heritage at their Barcelona studio, where I collected signs and symbols to incorporate into my work and led to the generation of new artistic content. Wallpaper seemed a natural subject to work with, as I collect wallpaper samples, and have often used wallpaper, and especially floral motifs in my work. The title ‘Mapping the Floral’ alludes primarily to the decorative use of floral motifs in wallpaper, and the mapping the history of its development. As a sub- heading, I had proposed to investigate ‘The Tension between Beauty and Utility.’ My original assumption was that they may be separate functions, with the idea of ‘tension’ describing how they coexist in art and design. An art -paper tests the boundaries between art and design. The next stage of development was personally evaluative as well as directing my research in the Natural History Illustration field, where I was influenced by my fellow RHD student projects. Australia is an advantageous location to unravel different strands of the past, examine and represent them. Research- focused travel during the RHD led me to include Philippine culture and wildlife, and related issues. As an artist one hopes to contribute clarity to debates on contentious topics such as the environment and animal rights, and I found that wallpaper is a effective medium for me to do it.

▼ The purpose of this research project was to provide a resource for individuals doing historic restoration and preservation of buildings built between 1850 and 1900 in Oregon. The research attempted to determine the styles, patterns, and colors of wallpaper that were used, who applied the wallpaper, the methods of application, and the sources of the wallpaper. Data collection instruments were developed to record information about styles, patterns, and methods of application from photographs of Oregon interiors taken before 1900; information about styles, patterns, and colors from illustrated advertisements and existing examples of wallpaper; information about services offered and products carried by individuals or companies who were associated with wallpaper as advertised in non-illustrated advertisements; and how long individuals or companies associated with wallpaper were in business. The sources consulted were selected issues of the Portland Oregonian between 1851-1900, Portland City Directory between 1863- 1900, the West Shore magazine from 1876-1891; and mail-order catalogs for Montgomery Ward and Company (1895) and Sears and Roebuck Company (1897 and 1902), photographs in the residence files of the Oregon Historical Society, and existing examples of wallpaper. The most popular styles were the Arts and Crafts style and the Transitional style. The most popular patterns were the floral pattern and the arabesque/scroll pattern. There were not enough photographs or examples illustrating color to draw a conclusion about the most frequently used colors, although greens, browns, and creams were the most frequently listed in the mail-order catalogs advertisements. The wallpaper was applied by painters until 1885, when paperhanging began to be a more specialized occupation. Before the 1880's, wallpaper was sold by stores which dealt in carpets, furniture, and oilcloths, but during the late 1880's, it began to be sold almost exclusively by the paint dealers. The method of application most frequently seen in the photographs was one pattern from floor to ceiling, followed closely by one pattern from floor to frieze, with a coordinating pattern on the frieze. The wallpaper was obtained by ship as early as 1851 from San Francisco or New York. After introduction of the railroad in 1883, it began to arrive by rail either directly to the dealer or to the home owner after ordering from a mail-order catalog. ▼ With the increases of environmental awareness and attention by the government and audiences, people begin to prosecute the pollution makers instead of tolerance. This study tried to control an air pollution source from a wallpaper plant for the purpose of attenuating odor prosecutes by residents near the plant. This study investigated chemical scrubbing, ozonation followed by GAC (Granular Activated Carbon) adsorption and biotrickling filtration techniques as control methods for eliminating odorous compounds from a waste gas stream emitted from the wallpaper plant. Scrubbing test results indicate that with an oxidative solution of 800 mg/L residual chlorine at pH 7.0 and a reductive solution of 0.2% hydrogen peroxide at pH = 12, around 90% of the VOCs (volatile organic compounds) in the tested gas could be removed. Odor intensities could be reduced from 2,317 (expressed as dilutions to threshold) to 130. Results also indicate that around 85 % of the carbonyl compounds, 41% of the alkenes and 22% of the alkanes in the waste gas could be eliminated. No removal of aromatic and halo-hydrocarbons was observed. It requires around NT$70 for chemicals to treat 1000 m3 of the gas. Ozonation-GAC adsorption tests indicate that with an ozone dosage of 5 ppm in the waste gas and a gas-ozone contact time of 12 s followed by GAC adsorption, around 95% of the VOCs in the tested gas could be removed. Odor intensities were reduced from 2,317 to <55. Around 94 % of the carbonyl compounds, 79% of the alkanes, 76% of halo-hydrocarbons, 41% of the alkenes and 20% of aromatics in the waste gas could be removed. Around NT$ 15,700 for ozone and GAC is required to treat 1000m3 of the gas. Results from biotrickling filtration tests indicate that with the supplementations of nitrogen and phosphorous nutrients to biofilms attached to wood-chip packings, around 83% of the influent VOCs could be biodegraded. Odor intensities could be reduced from 1,737 to <55. Around 61 % of the carbonyl compounds, 67% of the alkanes, 18% of halo-hydrocarbons and 33% of aromatics in the waste gas could be removed. Around NT$ 13 is required to treat 1000m3 of the gas. For an actual application, it is suggested that a process that a combination of chemical scrubbing and ozonation-GAC adsorption may be a proper solution to the control of the odorous emission from the plant. Biotrickling filtration can be best after verifying the performances of the technique by a pilot test. ▼ My work focuses on repurposing historic images and feminine objects to create a contemporary dialogue about the traditions of courtship, marriage and divorce. The use of textiles and feminine objects such as doilies, lace, slips and wallpaper serve as the visual foundation of my work. I am interested in how these objects, often combined with selected texts, create metaphors regarding relationships. Courtship, marriage and divorce are the three potential steps of a relationship. This thesis is arranged into three chapters: materials, themes, and influences found within my studio research and subsequent MA in Studio Arts Exhibition, Dames, Doilies, & Divorce Chapter One explains the use of materials throughout my work. Because I am a mixed media/collage artist, the materials I choose, have a direct impact on my work visually and conceptually. Throughout this chapter I will explain the importance and use of lace, wallpaper samples, selected text, historic images, and other feminine/masculine materials. For example, by veiling materials such as lace and lingerie-like fabrics, I am creating a sense of allure and desire. Layering of gender specific materials also assist in the visual exploration of courtship, marriage, and divorce. Chapter Two explores themes of relationships. Courtship, marriage, and divorce are the three main themes represented within my work. By using specific materials, I am creating metaphors of these stages; and often selected materials and themes will overlap within the body of work. In exploring these areas, I am examining the traditions and realities that are the foundation of any relationship. Chapter Three pertains to influences. I will focus on how other artists, time periods, and genres of art inspire my work. Because I have a background in both graphic design and art history, I believe elements from these areas filter into my current work. I am highly influenced by images of the past, specifically the Rococo Period and the 1960’s. For example, William Hogarth’s Marriage-A-La-Mode series of paintings serve as a rich historical reference and I have extracted his figures from the paintings in order to explore different concepts of marriage such as: the settlement, the inspection (separate lives), and infidelity. Another example is found within The Progression Series, in which I utilized found images taken from 1960’s LIFE magazines. Within Dames, Doilies, & Divorce, I believe the importance of materials, themes, and influences all rely on each other in order to be successful. Traces of this can be found both conceptually and visually in my work. I am questioning the traditions of courtship, marriage and divorce, but I am also interested in how they are repurposed as a contemporary dialogue about relationships. ▼ Les mycotoxines sont de métabolites secondaires produits par de nombreuses espèces fongiques. Les effets sanitaires induits par l’ingestion de ces substances sont bien documentés et certaines mycotoxines font désormais l’objet de réglementations quant à leurs teneurs maximales tolérables dans les aliments. Cependant, d’autres voies d’exposition à ces contaminants sont possibles. Si l’action irritante ou allergisante liée à l’inhalation de spores fongiques ou de fragments mycéliens a été démontrée, l’inhalation de mycotoxines est aussi suspectée d’induire certains troubles respiratoires ou certaines pathologies. En effet, les mycotoxines peuvent être retrouvées dans les spores mais également sur des particules plus fines facilement aérosolisables et donc susceptible d’être inhalées. Cependant, les données concernant le danger associé à l’exposition humaine aux mycotoxines par inhalation sont encore très parcellaires. Dans ce contexte, nos travaux ont eu comme objectif principal la caractérisation de l’aérosolisation des mycotoxines lors de la colonisation de différents matériaux rencontrés dans les environnements intérieurs par des moisissures toxinogènes. Tout d’abord nous avons étudié la croissance et la production de mycotoxines lors de la colonisation de matériaux de construction (papier peint, toile de verre peinte, papier peint vinyle, sapin) par trois espèces fongiques d’intérêt: Aspergillus versicolor, Penicillium brevicompactum, Stachybotrys chartarum. Ces espèces ont été choisies à cause de leur présence fréquente dans les environnements intérieurs et de leur diversité d’organisation mycélienne. De plus, ces trois espèces produisent des toxines différentes: stérigmatocystine, acide mycophénolique et trichothécènes macrocycliques pour A. versicolor, P. brevicompactum et S. chartarum, respectivement. Ces travaux ont démontré que, pendant leur développement sur les matériaux testés, les trois espèces produisent des mycotoxines. Le matériau le plus favorable au développement fongique et à la toxinogénèse est le papier peint. L'acide mycophénolique, la stérigmatocystine et les trichothécènes macrocycliques peuvent ainsi être produits à des niveaux de 1.8, 112.1 et 27.8 mg/m2, respectivement, sur ce matériau. Ces toxines peuvent ensuite être partiellement aérosolisées. Nous avons montré que l’aérosolisation dépend des espèces et de leur structure mycélienne mais aussi des conditions de culture et du flux d’air. Ce transfert dans l'air est observé après des sollicitations aérauliques qui peuvent être rencontrées facilement dans les environnements intérieurs car elles correspondent au mouvement de personne dans une pièce (0.3 m/s), à la vitesse de l'air dans les diffuseurs de plafond (2 m/s), à des coutants d’air ou des claquements de porte (6 m/s). P. brevicompactum est l’espèce la plus facile à aérosoliser. La majeure partie de la charge toxique des aérosols est retrouvée dans des particules dont la taille correspond à celle de spores ou de fragments de mycélium. Os frutos minimamente processados vÃm atender a necessidade de consumidores que apreciam produtos com caracterÃsticas sensoriais prÃximas ao in natura, livres de aditivos quÃmicos, prontos para o consumo e com qualidade. No entanto, durante o processamento esses produtos sofrem mudanÃas nas suas caracterÃsticas de qualidade. As pesquisas com biopolÃmeros usados como filmes comestÃveis aplicados aos frutos minimamente processados objetiva melhorar as caracterÃsticas desses produtos durante o armazenamento sem interferir no objetivo alvo do processamento, que Ã condicionar o mÃnimo de danos ao produto para assemelhar-se aos frutos in natura. Deste modo, o objetivo deste trabalho foi desenvolver um revestimento comestÃvel Ã base de Goma do Cajueiro e de Carboximetilcelulose (CMC) adicionado de trans-cinamaldeÃdo para a manutenÃÃo das caracterÃsticas de mamÃes da variedade Formosa (Carica Papaia L) minimamente processados e armazenados sob temperatura de refrigeraÃÃo (8 + 20 C) durante 15 dias. Para tanto, adquiriu-se frutos de MamÃo Formosa (Carica Papaia L) na Chapada do Apodi, Limoeiro do Norte â CE, estes foram processados minimamente em cÃmara fria na Embrapa AgroindÃstria Tropical â LaboratÃrio de PÃs-colheita, na etapa de revestimento os frutos denominados como Controle foram imersos em Ãgua mineral, e os frutos denominados como revestidos foram imersos na SoluÃÃo de Goma do Cajueiro e Carboximetilcelulose adicionado de trans-cinamaldeÃdo. Efetuou-se a cada 05 dias (0,5,10 e 15 dias) anÃlises quÃmicas e fÃsico-quÃmicas, anÃlise de compostos bioativos (Vitamina C, flavanÃides, antocianinas totais e carotenoides totais), atividade antioxidante total, polifenÃis solÃveis totais; e anÃlises de enzimas de degradaÃÃo da parede celular (Pectinametilesterase e Poligalacturonase.). Como resultado, observou-se que o revestimento nÃo promoveu mudanÃas nas caracterÃsticas de qualidade observadas, com exceÃÃo da firmeza. Os frutos revestidos tiveram uma reduÃÃo na atividade da Poligalacturonase que atua sobre a rigidez da parede celular. Ocorreu tambÃm uma manutenÃÃo dos compostos antioxidantes, com exceÃÃo do Ãcido ascÃrbico que ao final do armazenamento decresceu quando comparado ao controle. Podemos concluir que o revestimento manteve a vida de prateleira do produto por 10 dias, conservando as caracterÃsticas funcionais e a atividade da Poligalacturonase.

▼ Charlotte Perkins Gilman, une femme de lettres du XIXe siècle, a bien failli perdre, complètement et à jamais, sa capacité d'écrire au terme de traitements inappropriés pour sa dépression. Elle rédige un récit autobiographique et dénonciateur qui illustre son combat contre la science et la société de son époque. À la fin du récit, la narratrice, quoique anéantie, refuse de se soumettre et continue désespérément d'aller de l'avant. C'est une fin qui suggère, même au XIXe siècle, qu'elle (la femme, la Nature) avait raison, et que le médecin (l'homme, la Culture) avait tort. Au XXe siècle, Martine Desjardins reprend cette histoire sous forme de fiction. Notre étude comparative des deux oeuvres repose sur l'hypothèse principale selon laquelle Desjardins s'est largement inspirée du récit de Gilman pour rédiger son roman. De fait, les deux oeuvres, La Chambre au papier peint (1892) et Le Cercle de Clara (1997), l'une inspirée d'une histoire réelle et l'autre présentée comme imaginaire mais fort probablement inspirée de la première, racontent sensiblement la même histoire. Pourquoi une femme du XXe siècle a-t-elle choisi de réécrire cette histoire en disant « je » à son tour? En quoi le « je » d'une femme du XIXe siècle peut-il trouver écho chez celui d'une femme moderne? Et, comment, par l'écriture, la femme peut-elle exorciser ses souffrances et reconquérir son identité? Le premier chapitre de ce travail traite de la mise sous silence des femmes au XIXe siècle. Le second dresse le portrait de Charlotte Perkins Gilman et présente son récit autobiographique, puis le troisième porte sur la parole que les femmes ont reconquise au XXe siècle et met de l'avant les ressemblances et les différences entre les textes en mettant l'accent sur la modernité et le féminisme de l'oeuvre de Desjardins. Desjardins a rédigé son roman en hommage aux femmes qui ont donné leur corps et leur âme à la société pour permettre à celles d'aujourd'hui de pouvoir publier. We are heading into a world that is becoming more and more digital. In the future markets, customers will demand that some sort of technical support is available when they make purchases. This put a big responsibility on companies that have to satisfy that need. The wallpaper industry has not incorporated many efficient support tools to facilitate the product selection at Swedish retailers. This results in that customers experience many issues when they search for new wallpapers. Through a needfinding process, where customers were observed at retailers, eight primary customer needs could be established in the project. These were ranked after their relative importance. The results showed that the most important needs to satisfy was to give customer’s inspiration and help them visualize wallpapers in environments. In two workshops, around 100 ideas on how a system that could satisfy these needs was generated in a number of brainstorming sessions. These ideas were then culled with various evaluation methods such as rating matrixes, inventory methods and by clustering the ideas. At the end of the evaluation process, four concepts remained with different levels of technical demands and implementation requirements. The decision of which concept that was going to be further developed was then made by Midbec. The final system is a service that allows customer to visualize chosen wallpapers in a digital environment. The system contains a screen with a connected hand scanner that will be integrated in Midbec’s store interior and QR-barcodes that is applied to each wallpaper. When a barcode is decoded, either with the scanner or with a smartphone, the user connects to Midbec’s newly developed online wallpaper tool where the wallpaper can be seen in different environments. The benchmarking showed that no studies of effective wallpaper displays has been made. Several areas where new systems can be implemented to support customers and promote wallpapers more effectively was found throughout the process. This means that there are many possibilities to develop and implement new designs in the industry. As a conclusion, this project showed that a needfinding process should focus on incorporating the user to the highest possible level to ensure that reliable data is collected. Another conclusion is that customers experience many different issues in today’s wallpaper selection process. Again, this shows that there is potential to develop systems that can improve today’s wallpaper industry.

▼ Focusing on "The Yellow Wallpaper" (1892) by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and "The Singing Detective" (1986) by Dennis Potter in dialogue with theories from Freud, Szasz, Foucault and Butler, my thesis considers the role of medicine in encouraging a patient toward a normative subjectivity. The protagonists of each text have become ill as a result of their inability to accept the social contradictions and lies upon which gendered subjectivity is reliant; the unnamed narrator of "The Yellow Wallpaper" comprehends femininity as servitude to male demands, while Marlow of The Singing Detective desires the power patriarchy offers him as a male, but his loss of belief and faith prevent his ascension to masculine status.Both the narrator of "The Yellow Wallpaper" and Marlow resist the imposition of normative gender by practitioners of mainstream medicine. Therefore, a more complex and subtle method of treatment, the psychoanalysis developed by Freud, is employed in The Singing Detective, thereby encouraging the patient to identify illness and discontent as personal, not societal, responsibility.I commence the thesis with an overview of the unequal power relations presupposed and encouraged by medical discourse. Through a process of 'hystericisation' the patient is infantilised and made dependent upon medical care. Linguistic control is central to manipulating patient behaviour within the hospital, and correspondingly the narrator of "The Yellow Wallpaper" and Marlow both seek a new subjectivity through their writing. Difficulties in appropriating language leads to internal incoherency for the protagonists, met by a split subjectivity - a defence mechanism which allows the protagonists to deviate from, at the same time as preserving, their 'good self'.The refusal of "The Yellow Wallpaper's" narrator to relinquish her defiant self and assume femininity is contained by patriarchy - embodied by her husband, John - as insanity. The strict limitation upon a nineteenth-century woman's expression prevents her from positively escaping her physician/husband's script leading to her mental demise. By contrast, Marlow successfully resocialises himself by modifying the hypermasculine persona he idealises, and is finally situated to confront and reform the social contradictions that precipitated his ill-health. However, subdued by having been led to identify discontent as a personal problem, Marlow is unlikely to challenge the power relations which have made his subjectivity possible. His capitulation to normalisation demonstrates a fundamental point linking the otherwise divergent theories of Freud and Foucault, that the creation of agency first requires the subject's subordination.
