▼ This dissertation addresses the interface between
verbal and
visual signifying codes as they pertain to an act of ekphrasis. It considers distinct occasions from the fields of rhetoric, cognitive theory, early cultures of collecting, and
visual culture where
verbal and
visual strategies-in a relationship more Argus-eyed than Janus-faced- work through a rhetoric of amplification, exceeding themselves and one other, and in so doing, confound and complement each other, while fragmenting and exaggerating their subjects in suit. Vacillating between the apparent stasis of its
subject and a movement of metamorphosis, ekphrasis appears here as a form of monumentalizing in its attendant mutual dispositions of durability and mutability. It presents in variations upon some basic frictional, though not oppositional, pairs: the
visual and
verbal, the poetic and the plastic, the image and the object, and motion and stasis. The dissertation argues that ekphrasis entails an ongoing process that constantly exceeds, while reaffirming itself and positions ekphrasis itself as a dynamic, metamorphic device that works within an economy of excess, not only at the level of execution, but also at the level of discourse.

▼ Children diagnosed with ASD may have difficulties responding to novel situations and with problem solving. Current problem solving literature does not address concerns related to generalization of repertoires to novel tasks and does not account for further training should a problem solving strategy result in failure. This study focused on developing problem solving repertoires to account for these limitations. Three children diagnosed with ASD were trained in multiple problem solving strategies (
visual scanning,
visual imagining, and manding for help) in a multiple probes design. After training, the participants were probed in conditions where the strategy trained failed to produce the necessary responses. The results indicated that two of the three participants were successful with using multiple trained strategies to meet the response requirement. None of the three participants were able to successfully use
visual imagining. Future research is needed on developing pre-requisite skills for
visual imagining and developing problem solving repertoires.

The purpose of this thesis is to study the importance of illustrations and their interaction with the verbal text when translating picturebooks. For that purpose, our study is based on the interpretative theory of translation, in particular, the notion of effect. We identified several key features of this literary genre and established a typology of intersemiotic relationship in order to understand the workings of picturebooks, and to show that the visual and its interaction with the verbal serve to create iconotexts. Verbal-visual interaction, which is a fundamental iconotextual strategy to produce and interpret a picturebook, is actualized by the reader-beholder. This means that the effect of intersemiotic relationship emerges from the confrontation between the intention of the author and the illustrator and the response of readerbeholder. The intersemiotic dynamics thus have significance in the translation of iconotexts, which has as its aim to produce a similar effect to that of the source text.

exemplares de gÃneros cartas, assim distribuÃdos: a) 10 cartas de apresentaÃÃo; b) 10 cartascorrentes;

Some studies indicate that it is possible to store binding from two different types of information in working memory. We investigated the involvement of the attention in the voluntary conjunction of visual and verbal information (chapter 1) and if the verbal and visual information are encoded in an integrated form when they are available simultaneously, independent of which information is required in the task (Chapter 2). In the first chapter, the dual tasks paradigm was used to investigate whether the effect of the attentional secondary task (a backward counting in threes), performed simultaneously to the memory task (during encoding and maintenance), would cause a decrease in the recognition of conjunction higher than the information stored individually. These tasks were performed varying two characteristics of the experimental situation that could interfere with the attentional demand for more resources, the number of items stored and complexity of stimuli. In the Chapter 2 we used the paradigm of irrelevant dimension to check the presence of incidental binding between visual and verbal information. The results showed that the binding required more attention resources than the isolated information, only when complex stimuli are stored, such as faces and names. The amount of stored items does not interfere in the relationship between buffer and central executive. In the second chapter we can…

The rate of hand grip strength is the subject of many students, in physiotherapy it is an important datum in the proccess of avaliating and rehabilitating the palm and hand. The objective of this study was to evaluate grip strength in individuals without pathology in the superior member, considering the utilization of visual information and verbal commands. Seventy individuals took part in this study, from both sexes, with an average age of 29.943.20. The maximum grip strength was measured in three different instances, with a one-week break in between, using the following stimuli, visual information, verbal commands, or no added stimulus, chosen at random in the evaluation day. An Analysis of variance levels was used for the comparison of the samples in order to verify if there was any difference between the variables studied. The levels of significance established were p≤0.05. A parametric test was also used to verify the relation between grip force and Body Mass Index. There were no significant differences encountered in grip force and in the samples studied, when visual information and verbal commands were used. As for gender, it was verified that grip strength was higher with the masculine gender in relation to the feminine gender considering the stimuli offered in the study, the association between the variable grip force and Body Mass Index was shown to be weak.

▼ Explanations for the misinformation effect have focused on issues in long-term memory. This exploratory study re-examines data from previous research and suggests that a
visual versus
verbal distinction during encoding could account for seemingly contradictory results. The working memory model of Baddeley and Hitch (1974) incorporates such a distinction, and thus, using this framework, a dual-task study was conducted examining the roles of the phonological loop and the visuospatial sketchpad in processing misleading information, with a novel three forced-choice recognition procedure. Results indicate that the visuospatial interference task of manual tapping significantly increases subject’s performance to the same level as controls. Although non-significant, articulatory suppression led to an increase in reporting the misinformation item. Results favour an active role of working memory during the encoding phase, and further research is discussed, along with possible adaptations to the cognitive interview.

▼ Self-explanation is a robust learning strategy, but automatic, scalable methods are needed to make it a practical strategy for large-scale implementation in classrooms. This study explored the effects of using visual interactions to engage students in self-explaining while they learned geometry using a computer-based intelligent tutoring system (ITS). The current study compared students who were asked to highlight diagram elements relevant to geometry principles during problem-solving against students who were not asked to highlight diagram elements. Verbal protocols generated during use of the ITS, as well as pre- and posttests targeting retention and transfer, were used to assess learning. Results showed that while the number of overall utterances did not differ across conditions, students who highlighted diagram elements produced a higher proportion of deep self-explanations that connected domain principles to problem diagrams and a lower proportion of shallow utterances that simply paraphrased diagram information (i.e., reading angles from the geometry diagrams). Shallow diagram utterances were negatively correlated with learning but deep diagram explanations were not correlated to learning. Thus, additional interactive elements may be needed to support successful self-explanation using visual interactions.

▼ It takes a person 0.05 seconds to form a first impression of something new. While first impressions are quick and surface level, they are generally important in the lasting impression developed by the individual. I believe graphic designers have the ability to manipulate the first impression of their work by using the different languages of typography to command the attention of an audience and direct a planned impression. Through the testing and research of this thesis study, I aim to provide examples of how people share common responses and interpretations of
visual elements and show that the
visual and
verbal languages of typography can affect the first impressions of a particular design.

Considering that non-verbal languages have already conquered their space, participating, in a decisive way, together with the verbal forms, in mans cultural universe, this research has as its main goal to critically verify whether students from the four years of a Letters undergraduate course Portuguese major from a public university in Brazil southern region exposed to the iconic world read syncretic texts proficiently. In order to collect the needed information, we organized a questionnaire whose first part is constituted by the personal data from the research subjects and the second part presents questions aimed at obtaining the interpretation from two cigarette advertising pieces, one from the 80s and the other from the 90s. The set of questions were created to test the theoretical model from Umberto Eco. His method understands as dual utterances using a verbal and an iconic (visual) language, and observes ads images as many layers that could be analyzed separately in five levels. The first three iconic, iconographic and topologic - deal with image and the other two topic and entimematic with argumentation. A previous interpretation by the researcher was used as a parameter to analyze research results. It was expected that students perceived the message as soon…

Personality psychology
Osnovni cilj ovog istraživanja bio je ispitati
povezanost obrade emocionalno obojenog materijala i bazične
strukture ličnosti. Za potrebe istraživanja konstruisana su tri
eksperimenta u kojima je ispitivano afektivno primovanje u zadatku
evaluativne odluke.
iste afektivne valence i/ili inhibicija ukoliko mu prethodi
stimulus suprotne afektivne valence.
različite afektivne valence (stimulusprim i stimulus-meta), a
verbalni materijal (imenice). Vizuelni stimulusi izabrani su iz
baze International Affective Picture System (Lang et al, 2008), a
verbalni iz baze Konotativni rečnik (Janković, 2000). Bazična
struktura ličnosti definisana je modelom Velikih pet (Costa &
McCrae, 1985), Dezintegracije (Knežević et al, 2005), Amorala
(Knežević, 2003) i Kibernetičkog modela intelektualnog
funkcionisanja (Wolf et al, 1992), a operacionalizovana inventarima
NEO PI-R, DELTA 10, AMRL 15 i KOG 9.
efekat facilitacije negativnih stimulusa.
povezanost efekata afektivnog primovanja i pojedinih dimenzija
bazične strukture ličnosti. Efekat facilitacije negativnih
stimulusa u eksperimentu u kome je korišćen vizuelni materijal je
povezan sa crtom dezintegracije, a efekat facilitacije pozitivnih
stimulusa sa opštim intelektualnim sposobnostima. U eksperimentu u
kome je kombinovan verbalni i vizuelni materijal facilitacija
negativnih stimulusa je povezana sa dimenzijama amorala i
otvorenosti (Velikih pet).
u sva tri eksperimenta. Rezultati su diskutovani u svetlu teorija o
procesiranju afektivno obojenog materijala i mehanizama njegove
povezanosti sa prostorom bazične strukture
ličnosti.

▼ This study further examined internal consistency reliability and convergent-divergent validity of a three dimensional haptic matrix completion task as a measure of non-
verbal intelligence for persons with low or no vision. Sixty-six UND undergraduates completed the prototype Haptic Matrices Intelligence Assessment (HMIA) and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale 4th Edition (WAIS-IV), as well as several other tasks. Convergent validity was previously established for the HMIA with the Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices. However, the HMIA was designed for use in clinical settings to complement or replace popular assessment tools that are inappropriate for use with visually-impaired examinees. Therefore, ecological validity was examined (via convergent validity) with an instrument more commonly used in clinical applications (e.g. the WAIS-IV). Utilizing the WAIS-IV allowed for more reliable estimates of criteria constructs and examination of the precise constructs underlying HMIA task performance. Additional tasks that related more directly to manual-motor components of HMIA performance were also used to examine the effects of haptic ability on test scores. The HMIA was found to assess non-
verbal abstract reasoning abilities, haptic spatial performance, and working memory skills. Further research is warranted with individuals with
visual impairments.

▼ Recounting one’s memory is common in everyday experience, such as in educational settings and spatial navigation. How recounting affects memory has largely been examined with verbal materials, with few studies examining its effects on visual memory. The goals of this dissertation are to investigate the effects of recounting a visual memory, first on the person recounting the memory, and second on the ability of the listeners to reconstruct the recounted memory. Following an introduction in Section 1, Section 2 examined how intervening recall affects visual detail memory and whether these effects change across time. Intervening recall interfered with visual detail memory in the short term, but enhanced it in the long term, suggesting that intervening recall has multiple effects on visual detail memory, which change over time. Section 3 showed that memory enhancement from intervening recall can generalize across memory attributes to source memory, supporting the idea that intervening recall can enhance memory as long as fruitful retrieval occurs for the attribute. In addition, there is a positive relationship between what occurs during recounting and subsequent memory performance, raising the possibility that greater fruitful retrieval leads to greater memory enhancement later on. Section 4 examined the usefulness of one’s memory recall for listeners. It demonstrated that whereas objects are easy to describe from perception, one’s verbal recall of what was seen minutes before is almost useless to third parties. This low utility of one’s verbal recall constrains theories about the extension of our memories to the external world and highlights the importance of looking to more informative and reliable sources of information, particularly in higher stakes situations such as during criminal investigations. Overall, this dissertation demonstrates that the way recounting affects memory depends on many factors. Furthermore, while recounting a memory can benefit the describer, such benefits do not necessarily extend to the listener, suggesting that recounting plays different roles for the describer and the listener.

▼ Determining the role of intraparietal sulcus (IPS) regions in working memory (WM) remains a topic of considerable interest and lack of clarity. One group of hypotheses, the internal attention view, proposes that the IPS plays a material general role in maintaining information in WM. An alternative viewpoint, the pure storage account, proposes that the IPS in each hemisphere maintains material specific (e.g., left – phonological; right – visuospatial) information. Yet, adjudication between competing theoretical perspectives is complicated by divergent findings from different methodologies and their use of different paradigms, perhaps most notably between functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG). For example, fMRI studies typically use full field stimulus presentations and report bilateral IPS activation, whereas EEG studies direct attention to a single hemifield and report a contralateral bias in both hemispheres. Here, we addressed this question by applying a regions-of-interest fMRI approach to elucidate IPS contributions to WM. Importantly, we manipulated stimulus type (
verbal, visuospatial) and the cued hemifield to assess the degree to which IPS activations reflect stimulus specific or stimulus general processing consistent with the pure storage or internal attention hypotheses. These data revealed significant contralateral bias along regions IPS0-5 regardless of stimulus type. Also present was a weaker stimulus-based bias apparent in stronger left lateralized activations for
verbal stimuli and stronger right lateralized activations for visuospatial stimuli. However, there was no consistent stimulus-based lateralization of activity. Thus, despite the observation of stimulus-based modulation of spatial lateralization this pattern was bilateral. As such, although it is quantitatively underspecified, our results are overall more consistent with an internal attention view that the IPS plays a material general role in refreshing the contents of WM.

Embryology studies the stages and mechanisms of formation of embryos, whose meaning to living beings is connected to the perpetuation (not guaranteed) of species. It is relevant on the global formation of students, due to its relation with themes widely discussed nowadays, among them adolescence pregnancy, abortion, drug addiction and biotechnology (utilization of trunk cells and cloning). O Estudo II indicou a inconsistência empírica do fator visual do QVV e a adequação psicométrica do fator que avalia preferências cognitivas verbais.
This research investigated the relationship among verbalizer-visualizer cognitive style, recall, and narrative expression of autobiographical events. One hundred and four undergraduate students were asked to complete four tasks: 1) Report of an Autobiographical Event; 2) Autobiographical Memory Questionnaire (AMQ); 3) Verbalizer-visualizer Questionnaire (VVQ); 4) Bett´s Questionnarie Upon Mental Imagery – Short Version. Factorial Analisys of Study I distinguished two factors in recalling of personal events: 1) pre-reflexive cognitive processes (poorly dependent on reflexive resources, such as imagery vivacity); 2) reflexive cognitive processes (such as evaluations concerning the event significance). Outcomes of Study II highlighted an empirical inconsistency of the visual factor of VVQ and appropriate psychometric properties of its verbal scores. In Study III the expected correlation between cognitive preferences (for words or images) and autobiographical memory (for recall and report of personal events) was not…

▼ Having observed the complex role of the Portuguese Language teacher in guiding the learners to look critically the different discourses inserted into the journalistic sphere, this paper was proposed, based on the Bakhtinian theory, in order to observe the dialogical relations among opinionated statements press media, the presumed reader and the socio-historical context. Through the relationship between some aspects of different enunciations like editorial, opinion article, charge and illustration, this work intends to promote a distinguished look over theses speeches, providing the student the knowledge of contemporary language forms, to improve them as human being, as expected by the PCN (National Curriculum Parameters), as well as enabling their studies progress. Besides Bakhtins dialogical theory and his Circle, due to the analytical needs, several theoretical conceptions were applied, related to the press media production, based on Charaudeau (2010) and Melo (2003), and to the verbal-visual language analysis, according to Dondis (2007). The harmony and asymmetry between the utterances were observed through the cross-evaluation of different points of view and the evaluative tone adopted in each of them. It was also observed in the verbal-visual images the meaning relations with the written text, revealing the social-historical relation that involves them, as well as they respond to the presumed newspaper reader and to the immediate context. For analysis, it were selected editorial and its corresponding illustration from Folha de S. Paulo newspaper, dated January 9th 2011, one week after Dilma Rousseff assumed Brazilian presidency, which speech led to various topics on womens achievements. It was also chosen opinion article and charge from March 18th 2011 about Barack Obamas visit to Brazil, which led to different topics about the relationship among Brazil and the United States of America. It is expected that this study, developed under the dialogic perspective of the language, will provide to the education professional suggestions for media language analysis, in order to enable students critical judgment over the opinions presented by the press media, as well as to stimulate future researches in the Applied Linguistic field.

▼ BACKGROUND: With the proportion of the world’s elderly population continuing to increase dramatically, tremendous amounts of research have focused on detecting the earliest signs of cognitive impairment before the onset of dementia. The pathophysiology of dementia is complex and recent genetic and biomarker studies have identified new biological pathways that might modify the risk of dementia. One potential risk factor, altered serum phosphorus levels, has been studied with respect to its potential impact on human cognition. The association between serum phosphorus and cognition needs further investigation using a population that is free of CKD.
OBJECTIVE: I used data from the Framingham Offspring Study (FOS) cohort to investigate the cross-sectional association between measured serum phosphorus within the normal range and cognitive performance in women and men.
METHODS: Participants from the FOS who attended the ninth examination cycle were included in this analysis (N=1253). The Wechsler Memory Scale: Logical Memory – Immediate and Delayed recall (LM-IR and LM-DR) and
Visual reproduction – Immediate and Delayed recall (VR-IR and VR-DR) tests were used to assess
verbal and
visual memory, respectively. Times for the Trailmaking Test – Parts A and B along with the difference between the two tests (B-A) were used to assess attention, psychomotor speed, and executive functioning. Participants were categorized according to levels of fasting serum phosphorus as follows: Low Phosphorus - 2.0-<3.1 mg/dL for men and 2.6-<3.6 mg/dL for women, Moderate Phosphorus - 3.1-<3.6 mg/dL for men and 3.6-<3.9 mg/dL for women, High Phosphorus - 3.6-<5.2 mg/dL for men and 3.9-<5.3 mg/dL for women. Mean cognitive scores were compared across categories using a least squares general fit linear model. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to investigate the association between higher serum phosphorus levels and odds of cognitive impairment within each cognitive test.
RESULTS: We did not find any statistically significant differences in mean scores on the Logical Memory,
Visual Reproduction, and Trailmaking – Part A tests among the categories of fasting serum phosphorus. There was no association between higher serum phosphorus levels and odds of cognitive impairment on any of the
verbal and
visual memory tests. In men, higher serum phosphorus levels were associated with poorer performance on the Trailmaking Test – Part B (High phosphorus: -0.50 ± 0.04, Moderate phosphorus: -0.40 ± 0.03, Low phosphorus
: -0.33 ± 0.04; P-trend: <0.002) and the difference in log-transformed times between the Trailmaking Test – Part B and A tests (High phosphorus: -1.16 ± 0.02, Moderate phosphorus: -1.10 ± 0.02, Low phosphorus: -1.07 ± 0.02; P-trend: <0.004). Higher serum phosphorus levels were associated with an 80% greater odds of having a cognitively impaired score on Trailmaking Test – Part B-A in men (OR: 1.81, 1.11-2.94), and this association was strengthened when adjusting for additional confounding variables (OR: 2.02, 1.15-3.54). ▼ A descriptive case study design was used with a 5-year old male
subject diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). The purpose of the study was to explore the effectiveness of a
visual cueing system (VCS) to assist a child with FAS in retelling the events in a completed activity. Initial questions included: 1) Is the
subject able to retell the correct sequence of events in free recall without a
visual support? 2) Does the subject’s accuracy in retelling the sequence of events improve across sessions with greater exposure and experience using the VCS? 3) Does an increased number of the subject’s distractive behaviors before and during the activity and retell impact the subject’s accuracy in using a VCS to verbally sequence events? 4) Does an increased number of clinician redirection attempts before and during the activity retell impact the subject’s accuracy in using a VCS to verbally sequence events? 5) Is there a similarity between the number of subject’s distractive behaviors compared to the number of clinician redirection attempts? 6) Does the subject’s ability to retell a sequence of events, as measured by the NEPSY-II, improve following intervention using the VCS?
Due to procedural limitations, baseline data regarding the subject’s success in retelling a sequence of events without
visual supports was not collected. Therefore, the initial questions posed by the principle investigator were unable to be adequately addressed in the present study. Multiple variables were coded post hoc in order to review the relationship between these measures and the child’s accuracy in retelling the activity events. Post hoc coding included: Subject’s quality
verbal interactions, adult references to “help,” and subject’s percentage of events included in retell. Results from the post hoc analysis suggest a positive relationship between the subject’s number of quality
verbal interactions and his overall success in retelling events in the activity, as well as possible generalization of skills in retelling events in a narrative retell task.

▼ Binge and loss of control (LOC) eating are clinically significant symptoms that constitute syndromes characterized by a repetitive pattern of maladaptive and subjectively uncontrollable binge or loss of control eating. The hippocampal-dependent memory system appears to play an important role in the regulation of food intake in studies employing animal models. These findings may extend to humans, but research has been limited, particularly among vulnerable populations, such as those with eating pathology. Existing research suggests excessive energy intake and/or consumption of high fat, high sugar foods impairs performance on hippocampal-dependent learning and memory tasks, which in turn, is associated with excessive food intake and motivated high fat, high sugar food seeking behaviors. This vicious cycle may be particularly relevant to individuals with binge or loss of control eating, as persistent binge/LOC eating episodes are associated with several food intake patterns and individual difference factors that may strengthen the observed associations. This study sought to examine the potential role of learning and memory in the development and maintenance of binge and LOC eating behaviors among a community sample of (N=66) young adult women, who either endorsed binge or LOC eating (n=35) or reported typical eating behaviors (n=31). Participants completed clinical diagnostic interviews, standardized neuropsychological measures of cognitive ability and hippocampal-dependent memory, self-report measures of eating behaviors, dietary intake of highly palatable foods, depressive symptoms, psychological functioning, autobiographical memory (general and eating event memories), and current mood state and hunger. Results revealed that participants who endorsed binge or loss of control eating performed worse on several measures of hippocampal-dependent memory, including measures of visuo-spatial learning and memory,
verbal learning and memory, immediate memory, and delayed memory. Findings from the autobiographical memory tasks did not support our hypothesis, but provided insight into other factors, such as the potential role of emotion, in the study of autobiographical memory and LOC eating. The current study also did not find evidence to support the predictive utility of high fat, high sugar dietary intake on differences in hippocampal functioning, at least as measured in the current sample. Future research should continue to characterize and probe hippocampal-dependent memory among those with LOC eating, and explore possible differences in the visuo-spatial learning and memory system. Future research should also seek to overcome some of the methodological challenges in measuring dietary intake of high fat, high sugar foods, to further our understanding of the vicious cycle, especially among vulnerable populations.

▼ [ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT AUTHOR'S REQUEST.] Today, all communications products are multimodal, employing a variety of communications techniques, from writing to graphics (and more), in one product. Modes of communications must be synthesized to convey a message. The foundation of any communications artifact is the relationship between the words contained in it and its
visual structure. Some forward-looking thinkers suggest that the division of labor between the narrative and
visual components of materials has become increasingly blurry. As a consequence, they suggest, students must be trained to be visually and verbally "ambidextrous." This research examined college mass communications curricula to assess the extent to which programs of study nurture "
visual-
verbal ambidexterity" in students. Public relations, advertising and strategic communications programs at five schools of mass communications were examined. In-depth interviews with a select group of professors and textual analysis of course materials was undertaken to evaluate the programs. The study revealed a mixed picture. In many programs, students have substantial opportunities to practice
visual-
verbal integration in courses spanning writing, creative thinking and design. Yet at others it is still possible to graduate without taking a class in graphic design. Silos between schools of mass communications and art departments limit opportunities for true situated practice. Finally, accreditation standards constrain faculty in shaping curricula that exposes students to
visual-
verbal hybrid coursework. In sum, progress is being made, but there is more to be done. This inquiry scans the landscape, and offers suggestions for future study and possible solutions to the challenge.

▼ We report a series of experiments using a new methodology to investigate the relationships between visual and verbal representations and the process of acquiring new semantic associations. Transfer of associative information between stimulus modalities was investigated by training paired associations between novel pictures and novel words. Our results showed that the transfer of associations is a symbolic process, occurring only when participants are aware of the correspondence between the visual and the verbal items afforded by the name relations. We also obtained evidence to suggest that symbolic associations develop more readily from picture associations than from word associations. We argue that this is evidence that semantic knowledge is grounded in perceptual experience. Our most striking result, replicated across experiments, is that transfer of associations between modalities only occurs when subjects have specific conscious awareness about the relationships among associations. This should have implications for cognitive theories of symbolic representation. The methods we developed to expose this phenomenon can be extended to examine those implications more thoroughly. We discuss some of these implications in the terms of competing and complementary cognitive and behavioural theories relating representation to perception and symbols. Dual coding models fit our modality-transfer results more readily than single semantic store models, but neither is well suited for interpreting our awareness results, or for iv discussing perceptual grounding of representation. The models of Deacon and Barsalou both focus on systems of distributed representations grounded in perception; the role of awareness in symbol acquisition in their models is discussed and contrasted with theories from the stimulus equivalence tradition of behaviourist research. From these considerations, we argue that implicit associations underpin symbolic associations, but that semantic knowledge is conscious knowledge about the patterns of association which link representations.

▼ This study investigated the relationship between working memory and language in typically developing young children. The aim was to gain a better understanding of language development, in particular, the involvement of visual and verbal short-term memory in language acquisition and its influence on vocabulary size. It explored possible underlying causes of why some children have problems in the process of learning to talk, whereas other children acquire language easily. A total of 51 New Zealand English speaking children aged two to five completed a battery of assessments measuring receptive and expressive vocabulary and visual and verbal short-term memory. The standardized tests administered included the Receptive One Word Picture Vocabulary Test (Brownell, 2000b), the Expressive One Word Picture Vocabulary Test (Brownell, 2000a), the Visual Patterns Test (Stokes, Klee, Cruickshank, & Pleass, 2009), and the Test of Early Nonword Repetition (Stokes & Klee, 2009a). Receptive vocabulary knowledge was strongly associated with visual (r = .75) and verbal (r = .60) short-term memory performance and age (r = .72). The relationship of expressive vocabulary to visual short-term memory (r = .80) was stronger than to verbal short-term memory (r = .62) but significant for both and also for age (r= .83). Significant unique predictors for expressive vocabulary were age (R2 change = .60) as well as visual (R2 change = .04) and verbal (R2 change = .04) short-term memory. However, age appeared to be the only unique predictor for receptive vocabulary (R2 change = .54). In addition, the findings suggested that visual and verbal short-term memory increases as children get older. Hence, the Visual Patterns Test and Test of Early Nonword Repetition seem to be good predictors, over and above age, of expressive vocabulary knowledge.

This PhD thesis aims to research the intermedial nature of the literary and cinematic opus of the contemporary American author Paul Auster (1947). Intermediality is a term describing the relationship and mutual influence of multiple media existing within one single work of art, on the formal and thematic level (literature, photography, film, dance). The research…

▼ Visual images are often used in science communication activities and events for different purposes and in different contexts. However, there is limited research on this area and the decision made for choosing a visual image often relies on common sense or the personal judgement of a science communicator. Previous studies have highlighted potential effects with respect to a specific visual image property. This research aims to expand on existing research by examining visual images and their accompanying written texts utilised in 'encountered' science communication events. A case study approach was adopted to examine selected examples occurring within the years 2014-2018. The analysis is based on discourse analysis of the visual image and accompanying written texts which scrutinises the construction of an intended concept or ideology. The analyses of exemplified cases demonstrate several relationships between a visual image and accompanying elements to express an ideology. As such, there are four distinct, though occasionally overlapping, ways accompanying elements contribute to a visual image namely identification, expansion, implication, and reinforcement. The case studies then serve as the basis for synthesising the research findings in a science communication context. The findings indicate that a visual image or series of visual images can increase the opportunity for initial engagement through large physical size or occupied space, colour and brightness, recognisable elements, and the coherence with other collaborative visual images. It may also prolong the initial attention by being part of a series or continuation, displaying aspects of relevance or applicability, resonating with emotions, and being intriguing or challenging with respect to the interpretation. With regards to achieving learning outcomes, textual/verbal information is often required for the audience to process scientific knowledge relevant to the images. The interdependent combination of visual and textual/verbal information may enable the promotion of an attitude/value or ideological standpoint. Meanwhile, the use of a visual image can provide enjoyment or inspiration, as well as support the improvement of visual skills by default. These findings are summarised as a guide for science communication practitioners to use in the selection of visual images. In addition, there is a suggestion that the use of a visual image analysis framework could be a useful tool for a science communicator in selecting visual images for use in science communication.
