A new method for the synthesis of bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) ß-ketophosphonates from bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) 1-alkynylphosphonates is described herein. Bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) 1-alkynylphosphonates can be treated with primary and secondary amines to prepare enamine vinyl phosphonates. Bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) ß-ketophosphonates are obtained after hydrolysis of the enamine vinyl phosphonate. Advisors/Committee Members: Jackson, John (Advisor).

A new method for the synthesis of bis (2,2,2- trifluoroethyl) (Z)-vinyl phosphonates from bis (2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) 1-alkynyl phosphonates is described. 1-Alkynyl phosphonates, in the presence of Lindlar's catalyst, trifluoroethanol and H2 (g), are used to prepare the corresponding vinylphosphonates via a semireductive synthetic approach. With the starting materials in hand, specifically the 1-alkynylphophonates, which were synthesized using bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl)phosphorochloridate and the commercially available 1-alkynes, the obtaining of the desired target was accomplished. The semireduction of the triple bond was successful using Lindlar's catalyst in the presence of quinoline with 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol as reaction solvent. Additionally, a modified approach to this synthesis is explored such that only the kinetic (<i>Z</i>) isomer is formed. Advisors/Committee Members: Jackson, John (Advisor).

The reaction of primary a-halo esters with potassium bis (2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) phosphite (prepared from bis (2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) phosphite, potassium hexamethyldisilazide, and 18-crown-6 in THF at -78 oC) results in formation of the corresponding bis (2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) phosphono esters in good yield (60-74%). Yields diminish significantly when secondary a-halo esters are employed (10-12%) due to steric factors. Reaction conditions were applied to primary alkyl halides and a-halo ketones for the synthesis of bis (2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) alkyl phosphonates and bis (2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) vinyl phosphates respectively.
