▼ Vehicle surveillance is the task of measuring moving
road vehicles to automatically obtain information about vehicle
shape, appearance, identity, path of motion, and, ultimately,
driver behavior. While various vehicle sensors exist, none are as
versatile as the surveillance camera. Computer vision algorithms
can interpret digital images to make a wide variety of vehicle
measurements using a single sensor. An ideal algorithm would
reconstruct a detailed three-dimensional (3-d) representation of
the dynamic traffic scene complete with 3-d vehicle surfaces,
trajectories of motion, and identities. Unfortunately, much of the
3-d information is lost during the projection of the world into a
2-d image. As a result, the reconstruction problem is ill-posed.
Several researchers have addressed this problem by incorporating
prior knowledge about the world to rule out implausible
reconstructions. Specifically, in the case of vehicle surveillance,
a prior model of 3-d vehicle shape is often used. A constrained
alignment of the model to images allows for 3-d shape recovery,
tracking, and recognition. Previous 3-d vehicle models are either
generic but overly simple or rigid and overly complex. Rigid models
represent exactly one vehicle design, so a large collection is
needed. A single generic model can deform to a wide variety of
shapes, but those shapes have been far too primitive. This thesis
presents a new generic 3-d vehicle model that deforms to match a
wide variety of passenger vehicles. It is adjustable in complexity
between the two extremes. The model is aligned to images by
predicting and matching image intensity edges. Novel algorithms are
presented for fitting models to images, tracking in
video, and
learning shape deformation from a collection of detailed rigid
models. Experiments compare the proposed model to simple generic
models in accuracy and reliability of 3-d shape recovery from
images and tracking in
video. Standard techniques for recognition
are also used to compare the models. The proposed model out
performs the existing simple models at each task. Yet, there is
still much room for improvement, especially since training data is
limited.

▼ Ph.D. University of Hawaii at Manoa 2013.
Video has been shown to be an effective tool for synthesizing theory and connecting theory to practice in meaningful ways. This design-based research study examined how localized video of a practicing teacher impacted pre-service teachers' ability to learn culturally responsive teaching (CRT) methods and targeted strategies in an online teacher education course. By observing and coding video segments, pre-service teachers' mitigated course content with what they already knew. The study was framed by previous work on the use of video in teacher development, applied research on "noticing" to the inclusion of localized video of a practicing teacher for facilitating discourse with experienced teachers, and applied situated learning by using video as a conduit for developing teacher identity and communities of practice. The study offers iterative details of instructional design across three semesters of use in an online "Introduction to Teaching" course. Pre-service teachers first received text-based content on culturally responsive teaching and classroom practices, then viewed video of a practicing teacher.
The students identified and coded CRT methods and interrelated course topics in practice as they reviewed the video. A modified CORDTRA analysis of pre-service video-coding results suggested that pre-service teachers identified complex topics and competencies according to their own levels of teaching experience, and improved their understanding of core concepts over time. This study situates variances in "noticing" among students with differing levels of teaching experience as an entryway to a community of practice.
The study supports previous work on the social construction of language in teacher education and research on video analysis indicating that background knowledge, and experience is foundational in noticing nuanced strategies and identifying practice. The results of this study support the potential of video as a contextualized artifact for pre-service teachers to mitigate complex competencies in a socially constructed way.
Recommendations for future research include viewing the integration of technology in education from the theoretical lens of labor theory as useful in identifying real-world philosophical, economic, and practical implications the innovation will have on teacher educators, teachers and students.

▼ Compressed sensing is a novel technology to acquire
and reconstruct sparse signals below the Nyquist rate. This thesis
explores the temporal redundancy in videos, and proposes a
block-based adaptive framework for compressed video sampling. The
proposed framework classifies blocks into different types depending
on temporal correlation, and adjusts the sampling and
reconstruction strategy accordingly. This framework also considers
the texture complexity of regions, and adaptively adjusts the
number of measurements collected. A frame rate selection module is
included to select the maximum achievable frame rate under the
hardware sampling rate and the perceptual quality constraints.
Simulation results show that compared to the raster scan, the
proposed framework can increase the frame rate by up to six times
depending on the scene and the video quality constraints. A
1.5~7.8dB gain in the average PSNR of the reconstructed frames is
observed when compared with prior works on compressed video
sensing.

▼ With the great advancement of multimedia technologies in the last decades, there has been an enormous surge in the number of multimedia involved applications. Meanwhile, the importance of multimedia technologies is constantly growing. Among all the key techniques, sophisticated multimedia compression algorithms that provide superior coding performances are much desired. After the multimedia is compressed, it needs to be transmitted across networks, with applications including video conferencing, telepresence, direct broadcast satellite (DBS) and video-on-demand (VoD) services. However, due to the bandwidth constraint, the total available bit budget is often limited. Therefore, how to efficiently allocate the total bit budget among the coding units is a critical issue. Moreover, the predictive coding nature in hybrid video coding makes the problem much more challenging. In this thesis, we address the problem of dependent bit allocation and rate-distortion modeling in hybrid video coding. First, an analytical framework for frame-level dependent bit allocation in hybrid video coding is proposed. Starting from the nature of the predictive video coding, the dependency of neighboring frames is quantitatively measured with the proposed inter-frame dependency model. The dependent bit allocation problem is revisited. In stead of employing the search-based methods which are very popular in the literature, a model-based bit allocation framework is introduced. The frame-level dependent bit allocation problem is carefully formulated and solved using successive convex approximation techniques. In addition to the coding dependency of inter-frames, the inter-block dependency in intra-frames is discussed. It is well known that for intra-frames, the pixels at the block boundaries usually have larger distortion than the pixels at other positions. This biased distortion distribution not only generates unpleasant blocking artifact, but potentially decreases the intra-prediction performance and eventually diminishes the coding efficiency. Motivated by this observation, a novel distortion redistribution approach is proposed which aims to achieve the best rate-distortion performance. Under the total distortion constraint, the consumed bits are minimized by utilizing the intra-frame coding dependency. Next, we investigate the dependent joint bit allocation problem in statistical multiplexing systems in which the transmission channel is shared among multiple video programs. Different from the existing method, both the relative frame complexity and the inter-frame dependency are considered in the problem formulation, and the final bit allocation strategy is achieved via convex relaxation techniques. After the bit allocation, the next key problem is how to determine the coding parameters such that the generated bits would be as close to the allocated bits as possible. To achieve this, accurate rate-quantization and distortion-quantization models need to be determined. Thus, we proposed to use the Laplacian Mixture Model (LMM) to approximate the…

▼ Mobile devices are becoming more prevalent and complex. As a result, the wireless communication aspect of these devices is becoming increasingly significant. At the same time,
video demands in terms of availability and quality are also on the uprise. High definition (HD)
video is the standard of choice for meeting today's
video demands. However, HD
video is characterized by high data rates. Therefore, there is heightened interest in the 60-GHz spectrum as it is suitable for streaming uncompressed HD
video. On the other hand, 802.11 wireless technology, compared to 60-GHz, is much more established and widely available and able to cater to a wide variety of devices. HD
video compressed using H.264 can be wirelessly streamed via 802.11 wireless networks. However, such wireless networks are prone to packet losses, which result in degraded perceptual quality of
video. It is thus important to perform error concealment in order to improve the visual quality of degraded
video. Among the key techniques in performing error concealment on
video compressed with H.264 is spatial motion vector recovery. This paper proposes a new spatial motion vector recovery technique (MI-WAM) that takes advantage of properly decoded motion vectors. MI-WAM and pre-existing MV recovery techniques are used to provide different corresponding macroblock candidates that compete for the best concealment of each lost macroblock in what will be referred to as competitive motion vector recovery (CMVR).

▼ People’s online content choices should be driven by their intentions, but can be greatly affected by online recommendation systems. Existing recommendation systems mostly focus on promoting popular items and users’ historical records, thus may bias users against their original intentions. To study the problem, we launched a field study to compare the effects of intention-informed recommendations with classical intention-agnostic systems in the context of YouTube videos. We built a website to collect participants' intended
video categories, recall
video categories, and their opinions and usage of YouTube. We aim at conducting an intervention study with different recommendation on control and test group. The intervention is conducted with automatic emails containing videos of different categories, either intended categories suggested by the participants or the categories recalled by them. By examining users' responses under different interventions, we could compare the effects of intention-aware and unaware recommendations. As a reward for our participants, we also build an interactive visualization platform for people to know better about their own YouTube online data.

▼ Video applications have become more and more common in the past few decades, in the meantime, optimizing video coding has received more attention. Existing video codecs usually focus on the encoder itself, and try to do everything possible to compress video with spatial (intraframe) compression and temporal (interframe) compression with the premise of reasonable distortion rate and video performance. In this work, we proposed a practical approach to improve video coding efficiency at a lower bitrate, which is to combine traditional Video Codec with interpolation neural network. A new concept called ``virtual frames'' was proposed and applied to the video coding process. We use raw frames as Ground Truth and virtual frames to train the interpolation neural network GDCN (Generalized Deformable Convolution Network), then encode the video synthesized with virtual frames via traditional AV1 video codec. With the pre-trained network, we could simply reconstruct the frames. This method can significantly improve the video compression effect compared with traditional video codec technology.

▼ There are generally two types of multiview
video:
(1) 3D Multiview
Video (“3D MVV” also called “2D plus delta” or “stereo” multi-view
video): 3D MVV is widely deployed in cinemas and in the TV industry. 3D MVV typically entails capturing
video of an object using two cameras with differing view angles to allow for depth perception.
(2) Free Viewpoint Multiview
Video TV (“FTV”): Free Viewpoint Multiview
Video allows the user to freely pan horizontally based on an array of cameras.
While advances have occurred for 3D MVV, and to a lesser extent, stored FTV [Cheung2011], the commercialization and advancement of live Free Viewpoint Multiview
Video has stalled. The failure of FTV is attributed to the lack of standardization and the high bandwidth requirements of the FTV content.
This thesis provides a solution to obtain a significant reduction in FTV broadcast and P2P bandwidth utilization as compared to current proposed methods, while maximizing the user experience for the given bandwidth.

▼ The advent of efficient
video compression standards and the rapid evolution of the wireless networks have made it possible to provide high data rate services to end users. In this context the assessment of the digital
video quality has become an increasingly important aspect. Visual assessment techniques are good to predict quality but they are complex, expensive and time consuming. Current mathematical, objective methods measure quality using three different approaches; Full Reference (FR), Reduced Reference (RR) and No Reference (NR). The current existing metrics do not adapt well to wireless environment limitations. HVS based approaches are complex while FR based approaches have limitations due to bandwidth constraints. The NR approach is a distortion specific approach. There are spatial, temporal and network distortions when the
video is transmitted over wireless networks, and all of these distortions need to be estimated for an end-to-end quality evaluation, as true quality cannot be predicted by just measuring one kind of distortion. This research proposes a framework to evaluate the
video quality which is based on the integration of RR and NR methods by taking into account major spatial, temporal and network impairments along with HVS effects. The framework works with two different kinds of received data. The framework can operate in three modes, i.e., 1) only RR measurement , 2) Hybrid of RR and NR (network, temporal, blurriness, blockiness and HVS) functional blocks, 3) Only NR estimation. The framework has been tested with a experimental set up for
video quality evaluation. The JM 16.2 reference codec has been integrated with OMNeT++ simulator for the transmission of actual
video packets in real time rather than working off-line. Subjective test data base is also developed using the experimental set up as explained. Framework is verified with this test data base and also verified with H.264 compressed data base provided by the LIVE
Video Quality Database. Each individual metric has been tested/verified independently along with the overall testing/verification of the whole framework. Both proposed metrics individually and framework correlate strongly with subjective scores. The framework achieves high performance, scalability and feasibility to assess the
video quality.

▼ We present an OPNET model that uses WiMAX technology to send video packets in an advanced inter-vehicle VANET environment. Our work focuses on real-time video streaming. A video model was created based on live traffics trace and then integrated into a WIMAX OPNET model. VANET mobility was modeled with a real world road map and VANET mobility simulators. We integrate an implementable controller over RTP to handle congestion control by setting a framework fit for future road safety development. Different mobility cases are studied and the performance measures such as end-to-end delay, jitter and visual experience are evaluated. Different design considerations are presented to enable designers to effectively build on and develop a realistic video VANET simulation model.

▼ This research addresses the ways in which film might be used to investigate senses of place and representations of place and ritual. It focuses on two seasonal performative folk traditions in rural England, Haxey Hood in North Lincolnshire and Mayday in Padstow. By considering the experiential qualities of these annual rituals and their significance for local communities as seen in their wider socio-economic contexts, this research raises broader questions regarding place and belonging in contemporary society, and how film as a medium capable of directly conveying phenomenological experience, might transmit the sensual qualities of lived experience, place, and landscape to an audience. Drawing on Sobchack's conception of the film as a body in itself, the role of embodied experience is central in this study in exploring interconnections between the bodies of the filmmaker, the film itself, subjects and audience and their empirical possibilities.
The research at the same time is wary of realist approaches to representation, instead seeking to consider the ways in which this “wild meaning” is then manipulated, fragmented and transformed in the process of filmmaking, both ‘in the field’ and in the editing process. Through the use of experimental ethnographic methods, key conceptual aspects of this thesis such as performance, the embodied camera and auto-ethnography are used to investigate the complex ways that place and ritual might not only be known and understood, but are also performed and imagined anew through film.
Place and belonging are themes of great contemporary relevance in current academic and art practice, and the outcome of this study has been the creation of my film Folk in Her Machine (2013). By exploring both the sensual qualities of lived experience, and other forms of meaning through experimental ethnographic methods, it is argued that fruitful insights have been gained into both the embodied nature of filmic representation and its performative possibilities, or in MacDougall’s words, film’s interplay “between meaning and being”.

▼ This practice-based thesis proposes radical, critical, creative reconsiderations of memory and how the mnemic may be expressed in art practice. The research took place through developing a series of works within contemporary installation art practice, which considers the experience of memory an abstract, affective event.
The thesis confronts the typical assumptions and ocularcentric misconceptions that the mnemic is a visual phenomenon. It challenges presumed relationships between photographs and memory then asks: How may notions of memory be re-examined through art practice so as to allow alternative expressions of memory to emerge? After the critique, the thesis offers an alternative concept of memory that may be incorporated into art practice: the memory-event. The concept emerged through my art practice alongside engagement with the writings of philosophers Henri Bergson, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, and contemporary theorists such as Simon O’Sullivan and Brian Massumi.
The inquiry utilises O’Sullivan’s framework as a method towards parallel critique and creation in contemporary art practices; these counter existing forms of thought. The framework includes seven Deleuzean concepts applied in rethinking memory: the encounter, affect, the production of subjectivity, the minor, the virtual, the event, and mythopoesis. The thesis adopts this approach, and demonstrates how the memory-event developed through phases of research. Firstly, the thesis establishes and critiques prevailing ideas and expressions of memory. It then defines the methods and theories to disrupt existing assumptions of the mnemic, showing how the defined methods and theories were applied in reconsidering and posing alternatives to established assumptions. Included is a visual and textual portfolio of work exploring the ideas of memory produced in my art practice.
The implications of this research for art practice constitute, through the mobilisation of the memory-event, potentials for liberation from the constraints of representation and common assumptions of memory. This produces innovative expressions of the mnemic experience, and continues to challenge ways in which memory is considered.

▼ This thesis explores constructions of the Arctic as a literal and symbolic white space through an investigation of two films: John Akomfrah's The Nine Muses (2010) and Isaac Julien's True North (2004). Framed within the context of Euro-American constructions of the territory through 19th and 20th century imperial masculine exploration narratives, my aim is to challenge dominant representations of the territory as a 'blank', 'silent' and 'stainless' racialised landscape by examining the political and aesthetic strategies at play in the respective films. This research argues that these artworks simultaneously reclaim the Arctic from an exclusively white history and renegotiate the territory's position within postcolonial discourse. Taking into consideration fresh global focus on the region in line with political ecologies and neocolonial collusions for ownership, this thesis is anchored by my aim to scrutinise how the Arctic territories are visualised, positing that this ultimately dictates how the space is navigated and interacted with on an international scale. If we understand the Arctic to have been constructed as a white history about white men in a white space, then the non-white figure is an anomaly, eradicated and obscured from visual, literal and political representations. This research discusses the significance of Akomfrah and Julien's films for the development of critical whiteness studies and is driven by the following key questions: what do the films reveal for ideas of northernness, remote landscapes of exclusion and constructed hierarchies of racial whiteness through the colonial encounter; is the placement of the black body within what Jen Hill terms the 'heart of whiteness' (2008: 1) playing with the notion of what appears incongruous in a landscape? Does the visual and conceptual black-white binary - a prominent feature in both films - function as Marc Black terms 'multilateral double consciousness' (2007: 393) wherein, in place of one side dominating the other in the traditional sense of the postcolonial understanding of binarism, each side operates to reveal something for the other, blackness revealing whiteness and whiteness revealing blackness? Drawing all of these seemingly disparate threads together, this thesis presents an exploration of the interrelation of whiteness, aesthetics, futurism and the emergent field of critical Arctic studies.

▼ The popularity of
video applications has grown rapidly. There are two main trends in the development of
video applications: (i)
video streaming supporting higher-resolution videos and 360° videos, (ii) providing
video analytics (e.g., running object detection on
video frames). In this dissertation, we focus on how to improve performance of streaming 360° and 4K videos and running real-time
video analytics on mobile devices. We identify a few major challenges to guarantee high user experience for running
video applications on mobile devices. First, existing
video applications call for high-resolution videos(e.g., 4K). Due to limited hardware resource on mobile devices, it is slow to code high-resolution videos. It is critical to design a light-weight
video codec to provide fast
video coding as well as high compression e ciency for mobile devices. Second, wireless channels have unpredictable throughput fluctuation. It is necessary to design a robust rate adaptation algorithm to adjust
video quality according to the varying network condition. Third, streaming entire panoramic
video views wastes lots of bandwidth, while only transmitting the portion visible to the users FoV significantly degrades
video quality. It is hard to save bandwidth while maintaining high
video quality with inevitable head movement prediction error. Last, motion based object tracking can speed up
video analytics, but existing motion estimation is noisy due to the presence of complex background and object size or shape changes. In this dissertation, we will show how to address the above mentioned challenges. We propose a new layered coding design to code high-resolution
video data. It can effectively adapt to varying data rates on demand by first sending the base layer and then opportunistically sending more layers whenever the link allows. We further design an optimization algorithm to decide which
video layers to send according to available throughput. Compared with existing rate adaptation algorithm, our algorithm includes the new dimension of deciding the number of layers to transmit. We design a novel layered tile-based encoding framework for 360° videos. It can achieve efficient
video coding, bandwidth saving, and robustness against head movement prediction error. Moreover, we design a robust technique to extract reliable motion from
video frames. We use a combination of feature maps and motion to generate a representative mask which can reliably capture the motion of object pixels and the changes of the overall object shape or size. First, we implement our tile-based layered encoding framework Rubiks on mobile devices for 360°
video streaming. We exploit spatial and temporal characteristics of 360° videos for encoding. Specifically, Rubiks splits the 360°
video spatially into tiles and temporally into layers. The client runs an optimization routine to determine the
video data that needs to be fetched to optimize user QoE. Using this encoding approach, we can send the
video portions that have a high probability of viewing at a higher quality…

▼ In this dissertation, my goal is to analyze the reflexive function of video aesthetics. I focus on the staging of the video medium, its mode of display, distribution, and the proliferation of its usage in daily life to reveal the implications of analogico-digital images in shaping both psychic and collective life. In particular, I analyze how video is embedded in specific operations—from the pixelisation of the image to its algorithmically produced materiality. These operations, I argue, have come to be fundamental to thinking about how media grammaticalize our sensitive milieu. The manuscripts focuses on French theorist and video artist Thierry Kuntzel.

▼ The purpose of this thesis was to analyze and examine the production process of music visualization used during the live performances. The focus was on
video manipulation techniques which later were applied in the Multicast Dynamics – Aquatic System project. This thesis describes in details the creation process of visualization from the perspective of a novice, who gains professional experience through a series of the live performances.
The theoretical section explores the terms that allow a better understanding of the process of visualization. It starts from a historical background of synchronizing film and music and then discovers the ways of
video manipulation. The concept of Live Cinema combines previously described chapters into one whole.
This study was carried out as a project by using artistic research method. The empirical part consists of detailed preparation and progression of the project, active reflection and analysis. The artistic research was supported by data collected from 20 members of the Aquatic System audience. These results suggest that the visualization was successful and that it is valuable addition to the music played live.

Tutkimus tehtiin kvalitatiivisena eli laadullisena tutkimuksena. Asiantuntijahaastattelut toteutettiin strukturoituina haastatteluina.
Tarinankerrontaa virtuaalitodellisuuteen luodaan spatiaalisesti ja käyttäjälähtöisesti. Spatiaalisessa tarinankerronnassa tarina muodostetaan tilan ja ympäristön kautta. Tällaisessa lähestymistavassa luodaan ympäristö, joka mahdollistaa tarinan. Virtuaalitodellisuudessa käyttäjä itse päättää valinnoillaan tarinan suunnan, joten tarinantekijä ei voi luoda yhtä tarinansuuntaa vaan hänen pitää luoda useita vaihtoehtoja tarinalle. Vaikka vaihtoehtoja tarinan etenemiselle on useita, tekijän on johdettava käyttäjä kohti yhtä haluttua päämäärää eli tarinan teemaa. Koska käyttäjä on virtuaalitodellisuudessa tarinan keskeisin henkilö, on tekijän tunnettava kohdeyleisönsä. Hyvä tavoite tekijälle on saada käyttäjä itse kertomaan koettu tarina.
Virtuaalitodellisuudessa kerrottu tarina on käyttäjälle aina henkilökohtainen kokemus, koska käyttäjä on keskellä tapahtumia. Virtuaalitodellisuuteen luotujen tarinoiden vahvuus on immersio eli tarinaan uppoutuminen.

▼ My 2012 thesis exhibition was created to represent my visual perspective as an artist. Each work began with an initial idea or spark of inspiration. However, it is the process leading to the final outcome that shapes each visual composition. All of my works are similar in that they are multifaceted in terms of both meaning and structure, but each is unique in terms of when and where it was created. My form of expression is based on a response to my current position in the world and a reaction to the events and imagery I see in my everyday life. By finding inspiration in my surroundings and basing my artistic process on available resources, I can construct a work of art to address any topic. Throughout this presentation I will be discussing the origins of my selected ideas, processes, and the ideas or sparks behind the work I make. Aligning my artistic practice with both raw video imagery and process driven sculpture, I have an integrated my own artistic voice.

▼ This thesis explores constructions of the Arctic as a literal and symbolic white space through an investigation of two films: John Akomfrah’s The Nine Muses (2010) and Isaac Julien’s True North (2004). Framed within the context of Euro-American constructions of the territory through 19th and 20th century imperial masculine exploration narratives, my aim is to challenge dominant representations of the territory as a ‘blank’, ‘silent’ and ‘stainless’ racialised landscape by examining the political and aesthetic strategies at play in the respective films. This research argues that these artworks simultaneously reclaim the Arctic from an exclusively white history and renegotiate the territory’s position within postcolonial discourse.
This research discusses the significance of Akomfrah and Julien’s films for the development of critical whiteness studies and is driven by the following key questions: what do the films reveal for ideas of northernness, remote landscapes of exclusion and constructed hierarchies of racial whiteness through the colonial encounter; is the placement of the black body within what Jen Hill terms the ‘heart of whiteness’ (2008: 1) playing with the notion of what appears incongruous in a landscape? Does the visual and conceptual black-white binary – a prominent feature in both films – function as Marc Black terms ‘multilateral double consciousness’ (2007: 393) wherein, in place of one side dominating the other in the traditional sense of the postcolonial understanding of binarism, each side operates to reveal something for the other, blackness revealing whiteness and whiteness revealing blackness? Drawing all of these seemingly disparate threads together, this thesis presents an exploration of the interrelation of whiteness, aesthetics, futurism and the emergent field of critical Arctic studies.

▼ Since the start of the Syrian civil uprising of February 2011, I have become a trusted individual among an exiled community of Syrian civil society activists in the UK. As an Arabic speaker of Lebanese origin, I have continued to work with them as a filmmaker and advocate in various capacities. Stemming from this long-standing engagement, this practice-based research draws from a combined lineage of Militant Film and Expanded Cinema, questioning how this hybrid practice is capable of resisting what I refer to as the “narrative component” of genocide in Syria. “Genocide” here refers to the term used by Syrian activists to describe what they see as a campaign of extermination targeting their friends, families and compatriots, and which they regard as being instigated and carried out by the regime of Syrian dictator Bashar al Assad and his international allies; and “narrative component” refers to what I and Syrian activists view to be a propaganda narrative that the Assad regime and its allies have disseminated internationally in order to justify their campaign of extermination targeting that segment of the Syrian population in opposition to its rule.
My experimentation in this cross-disciplinary arts practice—conducted in a co-authorship with Syrian civil society activists—is informed by my concept (and claim to new knowledge) of wujoud (Arabic: وجود | lit: presence/existence): an ethos and philosophy of resistance that I argue emerges in the context of the Syrian genocide.
Engaging eclectic audience demographics through multiple strategies of wujoud, my practice endeavours to stimulate audience activism in solidarity with the Syrian democratic-humanitarian cause. This project therefore makes use of a variety of audiovisual art forms that include film, video and found-footage, stills photography, sound recording and its manipulation, stroboscopic lighting, and experiments situated at the 3 intersection of protest and conceptual art. Some of these forms are also deployed as installations that make specific use of the space and surfaces in which they are exhibited, producing immersive spatial environments that play upon an experiencer’s (audience) physical and emotional senses.
This research is situated in the field of political audio-visual arts practice and theories of “affect” and “embodiment”, with an emphasis on revolutionary and anti-regime audiovisual material in the Syrian context.

▼ Surprise is an inherent affect in immersive media design, production and reception. It enables what is implicit in experience to be made explicit through an immediacy in design practices, extending capability at the site of production. The development of new capability realised from a surprise enables a visibility of the inapparent by going beyond existing interpretative practices, revealing greater self-understanding in reflection after an event or encounter. Surprise makes apparent the spatial orientation to an object or entity by recalling a proprioceptive relation in movement from the already-there. This spatial orientation overwhelms any existing temporal, cultural relation in memory to the triggering object or entity, enabling a remembering of a previously forgotten capability. This recollection happens in the moment of the pause, halting or break in conscious registration, when the unqualified intensity in approach negates the qualified affect of temporal orientation relative to the object or entity. By spatially orientating action through proprioception, a surprise reveals an epiphylogenesis. The self-recognising of potential capability arising from a surprise illuminates the individually acquired phylogenetic and epigenetic memory apparent in the physiologically motivated somatic movement.
Using an ontological design approach to media production to illuminate surprise through a reconstruction of the Apollo 11 lunar landing – an example of the exploration of a new world - this practice-based thesis illuminates surprise as an anamnesis; a remembering of something forgotten from a past that may not have been lived in the present lifetime. By making the Earth explicit to a worldwide audience and visible through new media practices of live televised transmission, Apollo made the familiar object of the Earth visible from another planetary body. In doing so, Apollo foregrounded a new visible encounter with the sovereign home from the familiar home against a cosmos highlighting a new anthropological shift in perspective.
Media enables empathic engagement with both familiar and unfamiliar objects and entities through a liminal atmosphere between screen and spectator. The liminal relation enables an emotional involvement in previously qualified and unqualified intensities being revealed in cinematic space, affecting how objects may be experienced in their mediated reality, but also subsequently in everyday actuality. A surprise arises from an affective complicity with an ambiguous object emerging in the proximal space, making explicit an incongruence between its spatial approach and temporal orientation concerning that triggering object or entity. This ambiguity may emerge relative to an object or entity in how the practices associated are revealed in the immediacy of the everyday or through mediation to engender complicity.
The thesis contributes to new knowledge by proposing how deep-play, flow and hyper-focus arise in media practices affectively valorising objects and entities in the imagination. Media…

▼ 3D video is a technology that has seen a tremendous attention in the recent years. Multiview Video Coding (MVC) is an extension of the popular H.264 video coding standard and is commonly used to compress 3D videos. It offers an improvement of 20% to 50% in compression efficiency over simulcast encoding of multiview videos using the conventional H.264 video coding standard. However, there are two important problems associated with it: (i) its superior compression performance comes at the cost of significantly higher computational complexity which hampers the real-world realization of MVC encoder in applications such as 3D live broadcasting and interactive Free Viewpoint Television (FTV), and (ii) compressed 3D videos can suffer from packet loss during transmission, which can degrade the viewing quality of the 3D video at the decoder. This thesis aims to solve these problems by presenting techniques to reduce the computational complexity of the MVC encoder and by proposing a consistent error concealment technique for frame losses in 3D video transmission. The thesis first analyses the complexity of the MVC encoder. It then proposes two novel techniques to reduce the complexity of motion and disparity estimation. The first method achieves complexity reduction in the disparity estimation process by exploiting the relationship between temporal levels, type of macroblocks and search ranges while the second method achieves it by exploiting the geometrical relation- ship between motion and disparity vectors in stereo frames. These two methods are then combined with other state-of-the-art methods in a unique framework where gains add up. Experimental results show that the proposed low-complexity framework can reduce the encoding time of the standard MVC encoder by over 93% while maintaining similar compression efficiency performance. The addition of new View Synthesis Prediction (VSP) modes to the MVC encoding framework improves the compression efficiency of MVC. However, testing additional modes comes at the cost of increased encoding complexity. In order to reduce the encoding complexity, the thesis, next, proposes a bayesian early mode decision technique for a VSP enhanced MVC coder. It exploits the statistical similarities between the RD costs of the VSP SKIP mode in neighbouring views to terminate the mode decision process early. Results indicate that the proposed technique can reduce the encoding time of the enhanced MVC coder by over 33% at similar compression efficiency levels. Finally, compressed 3D videos are usually required to be broadcast to a large number of users where transmission errors can lead to frame losses which can degrade the video quality at the decoder. A simple reconstruction of the lost frames can lead to inconsistent reconstruction of the 3D scene which may negatively affect the viewing experience of a user. In order to solve this problem, the thesis proposes, at the end, a consistency model for recovering frames lost during transmission. The proposed consistency model is used to evaluate…

▼ Surveillance cameras are around everywhere in public. It is nearly impossible to keep watching over these monitors by human. Thus, detecting abnormal situation automatically is of paramount importance. When an incident happens, it is time consuming and inefficient to watch a whole surveillance
video. Thus
video summarization is needed for investigating the incident. The shortened length of the
video summary and the importance of the content will be significantly influence the efficiency of investigating the incident. In this thesis, we proposed an event detection and
video summarization system for parking lot surveillance. The system conducts moving object detection, object tracking, event detection and classification method to detect, report and record all events in the surveillance
video. The definition of basic and advanced events can make the summary
video meet a userâs need. According to experimental results, 8 basic events and 4 special events can be correctly detected and recorded. The accuracy of
video summarization is 97% based on the experiment.

▼ This thesis proposes a merging mechanism for multiple
video surveillances in TCP networks. Merging
video streams not only can benefit network administration but also reduce the waste of bandwidth. In this thesis, we design a
Video-Merging Gateway (VMG) between cameras and control center to merge two
video streams transmitted from cameras and received by control center. In the merging mechanism, we develop two modes: Interleave and Overlay. Interleave mode includes two operation types: Single Frame and Proportional. The former merges
video streams by interleaving frames one by one from two cameras, and the latter merges
video streams according to an FPS (frame per second) ratio between two cameras. Overlay mode vertically displays two
video streams in separate frames on the web browser. We implement VMG on a Linux platform. In the interleave mode, we recalculate both the sequence number and the Ack number of a
video packet, and create Ack packet for dropped frames while merging two TCP
video streams. In the overlay mode, we modify the decoding messages in the frames and separate data between two
video streams to avoid decoding errors. Finally, we analyze the complexity of merging algorithms. By carefully determining the timing for responding the created Ack based on Retransmission Time Out (RTO), packet retransmition can be avoided. In addition, we found out that the number of instructions to execute the algorithm is increased by multiple integers along with the picture sizes under interleave mode. As for overlay mode, the number of instructions is increased linearly along with the payload length and the total amount of data and Ack packets.
