This fact is responsible for the premature loss of capacity cell lead-acid batteries and their short lifetime. The task of this thesis is to examine the effect of conductive ceramics as possible additives to the negative electrode active materials of lead-acid battery cells operating in a DoD; in order to prolong their life.

Požadavek činoherního divadla a přítomnost dalších klasických divadel ve městě vedlo k inspiraci divadlem řeckým; japonským; středověkým; alžbětinským; totálním; osvobozeným; arénovým. Moderní budova činohry národního divadla se nemůže spoléhat pouze na klasická schémata; i když i ta mohou být požadována. Návrh reflektuje divadlo především jako místo střetnutí dvou protichůdných světů; světa reálného; v němž žijeme; a světa zidealizovaného; přetvořeného; který vídáme na jevišti; světa skutečnosti a jejího obrazu; světa tragédie a komedie; světa skutečných tváří herců a jejich masek; jejich skutečných osobností a jejich rolí; světa skutečných věcí a kulis; světa prostorového a plošně zjednodušeného. Také dva základní protichůdné pohledy na divadelní umění jako na svět ideální; pompézní; výchovný; poučný a zábavný a na divadlo jako nemilosrdné zrcadlo našeho života; subjektivní; věrné či sarkastické; i rozpor těchto dvou chápání divadla můžeme zahrnout mezi divadelní dvojakosti. BUDOVA Nová budova divadla chce být zhmotněním dialogu; základního stavebního prvku divadelní tvorby; kterým Aischylos povýšil do té doby všeplatné zpěvné a taneční rituály na skutečné drama. Dialog spolu vedou dvě protichůdné formy – budova divadla a její prázdný otisk – veřejné prostranství. Klasifikace dialog a monolog se stává subjektivní; uvažujeme-li za druhý subjekt prázdno. Tato představa dodává úvaze existenciální náboj. Samotné dvě formy – plná a prázdná – mají kromě parafráze divadelní protichůdnosti; pověstného rozhraní dvou světů; přesah do mnoha dalších oblastí života – podobně jako samotné divadlo. Tvar budovy - zužující a zvyšující se hmota - vznikl spolu s prostranstvím spontánně jako asociace doplňkovosti. Tento tvar však reaguje kromě urbanistických a provozních návazností také na ideu moderního divadla; které by mělo být proměnlivé a dynamické. Vzletný tvar budovy zhmotňuje nejen tuto abstraktní dynamiku; ale je také intuitivním přepisem dynamiky hereckého projevu; přetlaku energie sršící z člověka; nepostradatelné nejen k hereckému výkonu; ale také ke všem lidským tvůrčím činnostem.; THEATRE Dramatic art is as old as human society. During its existence it has passed through long and colourful evolution which we charted probably only really partially. Requierement of a drama theatre and presence of another classical thetre buildings in the town caused an inspiration by Greek; Japonese; medieval; Elizabethan; Total; Exempt or arena theatre. A modern bulding of national drama theatre can´t depend of only calssical schemes; though even those could be reguired. The project reflect theatre first of all as a place of a battle of two contradictory worlds; a real world which we live in it; and an ideal; transformated world which we use to see on a stage; a world of reality and a world of its reflex; a world of tragedy and a of comedy; a world of existing faces of actors and a world of their masks; their real personalities and their parts; a world of true things and a world od scenes; a three-dimensional world and a 2D-simplified world. Also the two contradictory views of dramatic art; the first one as an ideal world; pompous; educational; instructive and funy and the second as a merciless mirror of our own lifes; subjective; authentic or caustic; so even this discrepancy of those two different opinions of theatre we could add in the theatre duplicity. BUILDING The new theatre building wants to be an objectification of a dialog; which is the basic structural element of dramatic production; whith which Aischylos sublimated singing and dancig rituals which were of binding force in that times to a real drama. This dialog is runned by two antagonistic forms – the theatre building and its empty impression – a public space. Established classification of dialog and monolog becomes subjective; if we suppose an emptiness as the second object. This idea gives our meditation an existencial character a bit. The two forms by themselves – the full one and the empty one –except of an imitation of theatre dialectics; a proverbial boundery-line of two worlds; also transcend into many other spheres of human life – analogous to a theatre. The shape of the building – a diminished and raising mass – has arised within the open space spontaneously as an association of complementing. But this shape – except other urbanistic and functional sequences - also reacts to an ide of modern theatre; which should be variable and dynamic. The poetic shape of the building not only materializes thist abstract dynamism but it is also an intuitive transscription of dynamism of an actor´s manifestation; an overpressure of human energy which is indispensable not only for a performance but also for all human creative activities.

▼ O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as características fenológicas, de produção e qualidade dos frutos assim como do suco de seis clones da videira Concord sobre três porta-enxertos. Foram avaliados os clones 22, 28, 49, 202, 211 e 225, selecionados pela Embrapa Uva e Vinho, e enxertados sobre os porta-enxertos IAC 766, IAC 572 e 420-A. O trabalho foi realizado em uma área experimental pertencente ao Centro Tecnológico da COROL - Cooperativa Agroindustrial, localizado no município de Rolândia, PR. O experimento foi realizado em esquema fatorial (6 clones x 3 porta-enxertos) em delineamento inteiramente casualizado. As plantas foram conduzidas em sistema de latada no espaçamento de 4,0 m x 2,0 m e as avaliações foram realizadas nas safras 2009/2010 e 2010/2011. As amostras de suco foram produzidas pelo método Welch. Verificou-se que dentre os clones de Concord avaliados, o 202 apresenta a menor duração do ciclo entre a poda e colheita, sendo portanto o mais precoce. Dentre os porta-enxertos, o 420-A induz a maior taxa de acúmulo diário de sólidos solúveis do mosto, proporcionando redução do ciclo total e da demanda térmica dos clones de Concord, enquanto o IAC 572 induz a menor taxa, promovendo aumento do ciclo e da demanda térmica dos clones. Quanto à produção e qualidade dos frutos, duas combinações se destacaram das demais. O clone 22 sobre o IAC 766 apresentou médias superiores de produção, produtividade, número de cachos por planta e menor acidez. O clone 211 sobre o IAC 572 apresentou médias superiores para número de cachos por planta, sólidos solúveis totais, maior relação sólidos solúveis/acidez e menor acidez. O suco do clone 202 apresentou as maiores médias de polifenóis totais e taninos, intensidade de cor e coloração amarela e vermelha à 420 e 520 nm. Os sucos não diferiram entre si quanto à capacidade oxi-redox favorável, teores de antocianinas e coloração violácea à 620 nm, porém o uso do 420-A como porta-enxerto resultou nas maiores médias de polifenóis totais, taninos e capacidade oxi-redoxf, enquanto o IAC 572 proporcionou redução na intensidade de cor dos sucos dos clones. Foi verificada correlação positiva significativa entre a capacidade oxi-redoxf e polifenóis totais, bem como entre a capacidade oxi-redoxf e taninos dos sucos dos clones. ▼ This study is based on a corpus of the Charles Dickens Complete Works (the DCC), which was constructed to fulfil the aims of this research. The DCC was compiled to represent The Works of Charles Dickens in the National Edition (a set of 40 volumes, including the life of Dickens in the last two volumes, which consists of 6,202,886 tokens in total). This compilation, as the DCC, represents the first complete corpus of Dickens’s works. Employing the corpus stylistic approach was as an underpinning concept, and formed the methodology that has guided the research. The lens of focus is placed on Dickens’s lexicon, in respect to both the lexemes and their relative frequency, alongside the choices of lexis to be found in the context. The rationale for this thesis and value of its aims is primarily the facilitation of non-native English learners’ access to these works, through provision of an enhanced aesthetic appreciation of Dickens’s style with regards to his semantics and lexical choice. Additionally, the methodology aims to enable the acquisition of vocabulary, while providing learners with training in the reading of complex texts. The software tools used in the analysis are the WordSmith Tools 6.0 suite, AntConc 3.4.4w, AntWordProfiler 1.4.0w and the Range programme. The investigation of the DCC was conducted to facilitate Dickens’s works to non-native readers by focusing on the lexicon of his works. The analysis reports, amongst others, the DCC keyword list; the DCC Headword List (with 27,296 headwords); and the DCC Word Family List (approximately 102,753), which contains the family members of each headword in the DCC. These lists represent a valuable resource that can serve to facilitate the teaching of Dickens objectively, and through an evidence-based approach. In essence, the lexical knowledge gained from the DCC is intended to advance the reading and comprehension of Dickens’s works by non-native readers, and then to contribute towards the development of such learners' level of English language proficiency. Therefore, this study builds bridges between corpus stylistics and second language pedagogy. In the analysis of Dickens’s lexical selection, I demonstrate how learners can be assisted to reach the appreciation of Dickens’s style in terms of his lexicon and the semantic level of his works.

▼ This thesis is concerned with reading practices and the late medieval vernacular text. More specifically, it is concerned with the ways in which the medieval text was read and received in early modern England. The analysis focuses on two texts in their early modern instantiations: the late fourteenth century allegorical dream vision Piers Plowman by William Langland, and the early fifteenth century Fall of Princes, a translation of Boccaccio’s De Casibus Virorum Illustrium by Benedictine monk John Lydgate. The thesis considers the reception of these poems as they are reworked and reread by successive editors and readers during the shift from script to print, and from a culture of orality to a culture of silent reading. The reception of and editorial policy applied to these texts are considered in relation to the political and religious upheavals of the sixteenth century, and to developments in literacy and literary culture. The editions selected for analysis range from an early manuscript of a B-text version of Piers Plowman, Trinity College Cambridge, MS B.15.17, through to an early seventeenth century print of the Mirror for Magistrates, an early modern reworking of Lydgate’s Fall, published in 1619. The thesis engages with Zumthor’s theory of textual mouvance in that each edition is granted the authority of its own circumstances of production and reception. The synchronic analysis highlights the economic and political pressures which influenced and/or constrained editorial decisions. In charting the various editions through the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the thesis provides a complementary diachronic perspective which places each edition within the wider history of textual transmission and in relation to developments in literary culture. The combined synchronic and diachronic analysis of the printed late medieval text provides an insight into developments in reading habits and changing attitudes towards authorship and the functions of literature more generally. The evidence for the development of reading practices can be found in the interaction between the text and its systems of punctuation and paratext. Systems of punctuation and features of paratext act as guide and mediator between the text and the reader; it is these forms and levels of mediation, and the relationship between them, which can indicate patterns of literacy and reader engagement. Thus, developments in the systems of punctuation and paratext interact with changing models of the reader and the various types of ‘literate activities’ available to them (Salter 2012: 67). The late medieval period has been described as a culture of ‘literate orality’ (Sponsler 2010: 1) and its readers exhibited a diverse range of reading practices. ▼ This study is based on a corpus of the Charles Dickens Complete Works (the DCC), which was constructed to fulfil the aims of this research. The DCC was compiled to represent The Works of Charles Dickens in the National Edition (a set of 40 volumes, including the life of Dickens in the last two volumes, which consists of 6,202,886 tokens in total). This compilation, as the DCC, represents the first complete corpus of Dickens’s works. Employing the corpus stylistic approach was as an underpinning concept, and formed the methodology that has guided the research. The lens of focus is placed on Dickens’s lexicon, in respect to both the lexemes and their relative frequency, alongside the choices of lexis to be found in the context. The rationale for this thesis and value of its aims is primarily the facilitation of non-native English learners’ access to these works, through provision of an enhanced aesthetic appreciation of Dickens’s style with regards to his semantics and lexical choice. Additionally, the methodology aims to enable the acquisition of vocabulary, while providing learners with training in the reading of complex texts. The software tools used in the analysis are the WordSmith Tools 6.0 suite, AntConc 3.4.4w, AntWordProfiler 1.4.0w and the Range programme. The investigation of the DCC was conducted to facilitate Dickens’s works to non-native readers by focusing on the lexicon of his works. The analysis reports, amongst others, the DCC keyword list; the DCC Headword List (with 27,296 headwords); and the DCC Word Family List (approximately 102,753), which contains the family members of each headword in the DCC. These lists represent a valuable resource that can serve to facilitate the teaching of Dickens objectively, and through an evidence-based approach. In essence, the lexical knowledge gained from the DCC is intended to advance the reading and comprehension of Dickens’s works by non-native readers, and then to contribute towards the development of such learners' level of English language proficiency. Therefore, this study builds bridges between corpus stylistics and second language pedagogy. In the analysis of Dickens’s lexical selection, I demonstrate how learners can be assisted to reach the appreciation of Dickens’s style in terms of his lexicon and the semantic level of his works.

▼ This project is an effort to explore the kinetic aspects of Wordsworth's works on the one hand and scale up cognitive grammar (Langacker, 2008; Talmy, 2000a, 2000b) to literary discourse on the other hand, both of which stand as relatively underdeveloped areas in a cognitive approach to literature. Specifically, I focus on the kinetic and kinaesthetic notions of motion, force and energy expounded in cognitive grammar, mainly, fictive motion, force dynamics and energy chains, addressing issues not only related to kinetic representation in literary texts but also its possible effects upon readers. With the English Romantic poet Wordsworth as the case study, I conduct detailed cognitive poetic analyses of selected poems, mainly informed by some cognitive grammatical constructs, to reveal the 'invisible' meaning of the text (Langacker, 1993). I outline a cognitive aesthetics of motion by drawing on findings from cognitive science, cognitive grammar and aesthetic theory. Based on this account, I conduct a systematic examination of the fictive motion and fictive stationariness in Wordsworth's works as regards their literary representation and poetic effects. Particularly this reveals how Wordsworth instils fictivity, dynamicity and subjectivity in the literary representation of nature. I relate this manner of describing nature to the picturesque tradition, which is closely associated with a static representation of nature originating in the eighteenth century. I present my analysis as evidence of Wordsworth's attempt to transcend this tradition. With respect to force, I link the notions of force dynamics, texture and poetic tension (Tate, 1948), arguing that force dynamics on the one hand constitutes one important dimension of texture and on the other hand is the conceptual core of poetic tension. I then apply the force-dynamic model to demonstrate how a force-dynamic view could illuminate the differing texture of two poems by Wordsworth. My analysis of the two poems helps account for their differing conceptual complexity and also their contrasting popularity among literary critics. In the case of energy, I draw on Langacker's action chain model, which proposes an energy flow across clauses. I scale the model up to the discourse level and then develop an energetic reading of Wordsworth, examining how energy is represented in another two poems by Wordsworth. This thesis sets out to be a significant work in both cognitive poetics and critical studies of Wordsworth. In the field of cognitive poetics, it is a timely response to redress the imbalance between a majority of macro-level analyses and a minority of close stylistic analyses, and to answer a growing call for returning the focus back to the textuality and texture of the text. The frameworks I have drawn on are not limited to the appreciation of Wordsworth or nature poetry; they can be fruitfully applied to other poets and other types of poetry.

▼ This thesis is concerned with reading practices and the late medieval vernacular text. More specifically, it is concerned with the ways in which the medieval text was read and received in early modern England. The analysis focuses on two texts in their early modern instantiations: the late fourteenth century allegorical dream vision Piers Plowman by William Langland, and the early fifteenth century Fall of Princes, a translation of Boccaccio’s De Casibus Virorum Illustrium by Benedictine monk John Lydgate. The thesis considers the reception of these poems as they are reworked and reread by successive editors and readers during the shift from script to print, and from a culture of orality to a culture of silent reading. The reception of and editorial policy applied to these texts are considered in relation to the political and religious upheavals of the sixteenth century, and to developments in literacy and literary culture. The editions selected for analysis range from an early manuscript of a B-text version of Piers Plowman, Trinity College Cambridge, MS B.15.17, through to an early seventeenth century print of the Mirror for Magistrates, an early modern reworking of Lydgate’s Fall, published in 1619. The thesis engages with Zumthor’s theory of textual mouvance in that each edition is granted the authority of its own circumstances of production and reception. The synchronic analysis highlights the economic and political pressures which influenced and/or constrained editorial decisions. In charting the various editions through the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the thesis provides a complementary diachronic perspective which places each edition within the wider history of textual transmission and in relation to developments in literary culture. The combined synchronic and diachronic analysis of the printed late medieval text provides an insight into developments in reading habits and changing attitudes towards authorship and the functions of literature more generally. The evidence for the development of reading practices can be found in the interaction between the text and its systems of punctuation and paratext. Systems of punctuation and features of paratext act as guide and mediator between the text and the reader; it is these forms and levels of mediation, and the relationship between them, which can indicate patterns of literacy and reader engagement. Thus, developments in the systems of punctuation and paratext interact with changing models of the reader and the various types of ‘literate activities’ available to them (Salter 2012: 67). The late medieval period has been described as a culture of ‘literate orality’ (Sponsler 2010: 1) and its readers exhibited a diverse range of reading practices. The oral and aural characteristics of literary culture gradually declined in the late medieval and early modern periods but a ‘critical mass’ of silent readers did not emerge until the end of the seventeenth century (Jajdelska 2007). The thesis will explore the following questions:  How do the PR-agencies uses relationship marketing to reach out with their knowledge to their potential customers?  Are the any differences between their promotions when it comes to the agencies orientation? Theoretical framework: The chapter begins with a definition of Public Relations. After that a framework of Relationship Marketing theory is made with headlines as relations, interaction and networking. Method: A qualitative research method, with a deductive approach, has been implemented. Four PR-agencies - Gullers Grupp, Halvarsson & Halvarson, JKL, Prime and a consultant have all been interviewed on the subject. Empirical: The empirical framework presents the outcome of the interviews framework: with the four agencies and the consultant. The respondents give their agencies version on how they use marketing to reach out to the right customers. This is presented in the same way as in the theoretical framework Conclusion: Developed empirical shows that relationship marketing is the primary foundation in a successful PR work. It is the PR-agencies well-adapt network that generates qualified co-workers and which, in turn, contributes to the right customers for the PR-agency. We can establish that there is no general description of Public Relations and we dare to assert that this is based on the complexity in the PR-activities. With the findings of that relationship marketing permeates the entire PR-industry, we can see that the activities that agencies use varies to their orientation, values and amount of trust. The empirical framework also highlights that the PR-industry does not use their full potential to acquire the right customers and especially to clarify the complex and different orientations. PR-agencies also tend to exclude traditional advertising and solely focus on Public Relation for its own marketing purposes.

▼ Vsaka organizacija je del širšega okolja in kot takšna se ne more izogniti komunikaciji z različnimi javnostmi. Med pomembne javnosti sodijo mediji oz. medijske hiše, ki imajo v okolju dvojno vlogo: širši javnosti v obliki novinarskih prispevkov posredujejo informacije o podjetjih, poleg tega s podjetji na različne načine poslovno sodelujejo, saj so tudi medijske hiše podjetja. Mediji so pomembni (so)ustvarjalci javnega mnenja, zato si podjetja prizadevajo, da bi bila prisotna v medijih in bi jim bili novinarski prispevki naklonjeni. Količina, obseg in naklonjenost medijskih objav podjetju niso odvisni izključno od medijev in njihovih novinarjev, pač pa tudi od podjetja in njegove kakovosti upravljanja odnosov z mediji. Za učinkovito upravljanje odnosov z mediji je bistvenega pomena razumevanje odnosa med podjetjem in novinarji, kar smo raziskovali tudi v našem delu. Da smo področje podrobneje spoznali, smo pregledali aktualno literaturo z relevantnih področij ter na njeni osnovi umestili odnose z mediji v širši teoretični okvir integriranega trženjskega komuniciranja, predstavili smo delovanje in značilnosti medijev oz. medijskih hiš s poudarkom stanja na tem področju v Sloveniji ter povzeli ključna določila zakonov in etičnih kodeksov z relevantnih področij, to je medijev, novinarstva in oglaševanja. V empiričnem delu smo najprej opravili globinski intervju z novinarjem, nato pa še kvantitativno raziskavo, za katero smo s pomočjo spletne ankete pridobili odgovore 65 novinarjev in 106 predstavnikov podjetij. Ključno raziskovalno vprašanje je bilo, ali področje odnosov z mediji razumejo predstavniki podjetij drugače kot novinarji. Ugotovili smo, da predstavniki podjetij pripisujejo medsebojnemu sodelovanju z novinarji precej večji pomen kot novinarji. Novinarji celo to sodelovanje ocenjujejo na intervalu med nevtralnim in nepomembnim, medtem ko ga predstavniki podjetij ocenjujejo na intervalu med nevtralnim in pomembnim. Tako novinarji kot tudi predstavniki za odnose z mediji se ne strinjajo, da bi bil t. i. PR slovenskih podjetij na zelo visoki ravni, pri čemer je nestrinjanje med novinarji še nekoliko močnejše kot med predstavniki podjetij. Ugotovili smo tudi, da med podjetji, ki bolje razumejo delovanje medijev, in podjetji, ki slabše razumejo delovanje medijev, obstajajo razlike pri presoji uporabnosti informacij za medije, saj podjetja, ki bolje razumejo delovanje medijev, večinoma tudi bolje presojajo uporabnost informacij za medije kot podjetja, ki slabše razumejo delovanje medijev. Za dolgoročno dobre odnose med dvema skupinama je vedno najprej potrebno vzajemno razumevanje, ki pa v osnovi vedno izhaja iz poznavanja nasprotnega področja, zato predlagamo, da bi imelo vsako podjetje osebo, ki bi skrbela za odnose z mediji. ▼ This thesis collects, transcribes, and, with reference to household documents and contemporary literature, annotates and interprets the surviving correspondence of a constellation of seven upper servants who at various points in the second half of the sixteenth century were stationed at or moved between several country houses and estates of which Bess of Hardwick was mistress. The thesis finds that the extant correspondence of Bess’s servants falls into two categories: (1) letters of management exchanged between Bess and five of her household and estate officers (Francis Whitfield, James Crompe, William Marchington, and Edward Foxe at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire and nearby estates in the 1550s-1560s, and Nicholas Kynnersley at Wingfield Manor, Derbyshire in the late 1580s) and (2) letters seeking practical and political patronage, written in the early 1580s by two of Bess’s gentle-born personal attendants, William Marmyon and Frances Battell, to contacts outside Bess’s itinerant (and at that time politically vulnerable) household. Close literary, linguistic (historical pragmatic), and material readings reveal that all these letters adapt and surpass conventional expressions as they engage in practical problem-solving, complex interpersonal exchanges, and domestic politics. The thesis argues that the manuscript letters materialise dynamic verbal performances of their writers’ specific social roles and relationships — the mistress-servant relationship foremost among them. Each writer simultaneously registers and renegotiates his or her own experience of the mistress-servant relationship through the combination of diverse epistolary features, which include verbal etiquette and page layout, degrees of directness or circumlocution, complexity of syntax, tone, use of emotive language, discourses of pleasure and displeasure, personalised content (which ranges from in-jokes to empathy to distinctive pen flourishes), and explicit expressions of authority or loyalty, as well as job-specific terminology and subject matter. Frequency of correspondence, modes of delivery, and the afterlives of letters are shown to carry further social significance. The correspondence of Bess of Hardwick’s servants acts as a touchstone for the complex role of letter-writing in the formation of social selves and the performance of domestic duties in sixteenth-century England. By accurately transcribing these letters, interpreting them using a unique combination of literary, linguistic, and visual analysis, and reconstructing from these letters and additional archival sources the careers of several servants of one mistress, this thesis opens up new material, perspectives, questions, and methods for early modern cultural studies.

▼ This project aims to explore the ways in which the works of late medieval poet John Lydgate are treated and received in their early printed forms. The study will chart the history and evolution of a selection of Lydgate texts through the late medieval and Reformation period, considering the texts and their reception in relation to the contemporary social, political and religious backdrop. The project will make special reference to the work of John Lydgate and evaluate his contemporary status as a high profile poet and his subsequent decline in popularity from the mid-sixteenth century. In order to provide a focus for the analysis of these texts, the punctuation practices employed by the various printers and editors will be studied in-depth in four of Lydgate’s texts; The Siege of Thebes, Troy Book, The Churl and the Bird and The Temple of Glas. This data will demonstrate the development of punctuation techniques in print from the late medieval to early modern period and determine how these techniques were applied to the chosen texts. The analysis of this data will further illustrate the changing requirements and expectations of the contemporary readership and the impact this had on the treatment and reception of Lydgate’s medieval texts. Despite his successful literary career during the fifteenth century, modern criticism has been harsh and Lydgate has long been considered a marginal figure in the canon of English literature. Scanlon and Simpson argue that this “was as much a matter of careful aesthetic discrimination as it was of historical reconstruction”; in other words, John Lydgate did not fit the literary and artistic ideals of the nineteenth century and was subsequently relegated to the margins of literary history (Scanlon & Simpson 2006: 2). More recently scholarship has aimed to take a fresh look at the life and work of John Lydgate and the influence he had on later writers and English literature as a whole. Attempting to sweep away the entrenched negative perceptions of his work as dull and didactic, scholars have begun to analyse Lydgate from a fifteenth-century perspective and to evaluate the role his work played in the lives and reading habits of late medieval England. As a definitively Catholic writer whose popularity spans the Reformation, it is Lydgate’s unique position which can provide insights into the contradictions and complexities of fifteenth century reading culture. His work is steeped in the medieval Catholic literary tradition, while also tackling contemporary political issues of kingship and national identity associated with the intellectual pursuits of the Renaissance. It is for this reason that Lydgate has been described as both a definitive embodiment of the middle ages (Pearsall 1970: 2) and as a “transition poet” (Renoir 1967: 31). Regardless of labelling, Lydgate was undoubtedly a central figure in fifteenth-century literary culture, and the treatment and reception of his texts can illustrate the ways in which sixteenth- and seventeenth-century editors, printers and publishers…

"Secretary in Fashion" by Serre (1668), an epistolary manual, and "Love-Letters between a Nobleman and his Sister" (1684), an epistolary novel attributed to Behn, both give insights into epistolary conventions. Their inception and nature is interesting, considering their historical context. Despite the Restoration of Charles II, 17th century England was in a confused political state; as a result, texts regarding social convention or politics interested contemporary readers (the novel is inspired by a scandal of Lord Grey, an ardent Whig opposing Charles II). Past epistolary studies focus on 18th rather than 17th century manuals; the latter is typically used as supplementary information. Similarly, past epistolary fiction studies focus on 18th century texts; moreover, linguistic studies on Behn and the novel are deficient. Thus, this study addresses the research questions: 1) What are the socio-cultural and pragmaticlinguistic features represented in "Secretary in Fashion"? 2) What are the socio-cultural and pragmatic-linguistic features represented in "Love-Letters between a Nobleman and his Sister", and do any of these features correlate with the features represented in "Secretary in Fashion"? How far do the characteristic linguistic features of "Love-Letters between a Nobleman and his Sister" correlate with the practices recommended by the manual? Both texts were qualitatively analysed from an historical pragmatic perspective, which observes the potential effects of the socio-cultural and historical context. Also, as the texts concern shared discourses, comparisons were made with Gricean and Politeness Theory. The results show that the manual is a typical 17th century epistolary manual, aligning particularly with the "Academies of Complements", as it concerns the social conventions of the gentry. The novel mainly upheld instructions on form and matter; deviations occurred due to the amatory nature of some letters, and the narrative force affecting the style. Unfortunately, neither research question elucidates the actual usage of manuals. However, this study does show the epistolary practices of two writers, within specific contexts. It reveals that their 17th century English language use is affected by socialisation, in terms of social conventions concerning social rank, age, and gender; therefore, context varies language use. Also, their popularity reveals the interests of the 17th century society. Interest in epistolary-related texts, surely piques the interest of the modern reader as to why such epistolary-related texts were interesting.

▼ This study examines British Romantic responses to Italian Renaissance art and argues that Italian art was a key force in shaping Romantic-period culture and aesthetic thought. Italian Renaissance art, which was at once familiar and unknown, provided an avenue through which Romantic writers could explore a wide range of issues. Napoleon’s looting of Italy made this art central to contemporary politics, but it also provided the British with their first real chance to own Italian Old Master art. The period’s interest in biography and genius led to the development of an aesthetic vocabulary that might be applied equally to literature and visual art. Chapter One discusses the place of Italian art in Post-Waterloo Britain and how the influx of Old Master art impacted on Britain’s exhibition and print culture. While Italian art was appropriated as a symbol of British national prestige, Catholic iconography could be difficult to reconcile with Protestant taste. Furthermore, Old Master art challenged both eighteenth-century aesthetic philosophy and the Royal Academy’s standing, while simultaneously creating opportunities for new viewers and new patrons to participate in the cultural discourse. Chapter Two builds on these ideas by exploring the idea of connoisseurship in the period. As art became increasingly democratized, a cacophony of voices competed to claim aesthetic authority. While the chapter examines a range of competing discourses, it culminates in a discussion of what I have termed the ‘Poetic Connoisseur’. Through a discussion of the work of Lord Byron, Percy Shelley and William Hazlitt, I argue that Romantic writers created an exclusive aristocracy of taste which demanded that the viewer be able to read the ‘poetry of painting’. Chapter Three focuses on the ways in which Romantic writers used art to produce literature rather than criticism. In this chapter, I argue that writers such as Byron, Shelley, Lady Morgan, Anna Jameson and Madame de Staël, created an imaginative vocabulary which lent itself equally to literature and visual art. Chapter Four uses Samuel Rogers’s Italy as a case study. It traces how the themes discussed in the previous chapters shaped the production of one of the nineteenth century’s most popular illustrated books, how British art began to appropriate Italian subjects and how deeply intertwined visual and literary culture were in the period. Finally, this discussion of Italy demonstrates how Romantic values were passed to a Victorian readership. Through an appreciation of how the Romantics understood Italian Renaissance art we can better understand their experience and understanding of Italy, British and European visual culture and the Imagination.

▼ Technology in contemporary society goes beyond the limits of its use in educational processes, but there is no way of being indifferent to the fact that we live in a context where time and space have changed facing the speed with which we produce and broadcast information. This research aimed at identifying, analyzing and building a historical narrative about the educational practices mediated by technological resources at the Universidade Estadual de Londrina in the period from 1978 to 1988. The study resulted from a qualitative approach, having as its sources: documents, newspaper reports and memories of people who took part in the actions included in the studied period. Among the documents are the minutes from the meetings of the governing bodies of the University, such as the Conselho de Ensino Pesquisa e Extensão; the minutes from the Conselho Universitário and the collection from the SAUEL. The authors that investigate Distance Education as a modality of teaching such as Holmberg; Moore; Cropley and Kahl; Rebel; Perriault; Malcolm Tigth and Peters in an international level, and Belloni; Litto; Formiga; Neves; Alvez; among others were prioritized as theoretical referential. We concluded that in the UEL during the investigated period, two programs stand out as important actions regarding the use of technological resources linked to educational practice: the PADES - Program of support and Development of Higher Education and the PIUTEC - Program of University Integration and Tele Education Capricorn, both for the training of teachers. p>A tecnologia na sociedade contemporânea extrapola os limites de seu uso nos processos educativos, mas não há como ser indiferente ao fato de que vivemos num contexto no qual tempo e espaço modificam se frente à velocidade com a qual produzimos e transmitimos informações. Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo identificar, analisar e construir uma narrativa histórica sobre as Práticas educacionais mediadas por recursos tecnológicos na Universidade Estadual de Londrina no período de 1978 a 1988. O estudo foi realizado a partir de uma abordagem qualitativa, tendo por fontes: documentos, reportagem de jornais e memórias das pessoas que participaram das ações compreendidas no período estudado. Entre os documentos encontram-se as atas das reuniões dos Órgãos Superiores da universidade, tais como o Conselho de Ensino, Pesquisa e Extensão; atas do Conselho Universitário e o acervo da SAUEL. Priorizaram-se como referenciais teóricos autores que investigam a educação à distância como modalidade de ensino como Holmberg; Moore; Cropley e Kahl; Rebel; Perriault; Malcom Tigth e Peters, em âmbito internacional e Belloni; Litto; Formiga; Neves; Alves; dentre outros.
