Human-computer interaction becomes sophisticated, multimodal and multi device and needs to be well-designed with the aim of facilitating application correction (i.e. to correcting errors/bugs in the application) or extension (i.e. adding new functionalities or modifying existing tasks). This thesis is focused on building a methodology of designing and specifying User Interface (UI) behaviour. The Unified Modelling Language (UML) is used to describe in detail the conceptual model and to define all its objects. The methodology flux diagram is provided with the specification of the consistency and the completeness properties of the transformation model. To support the methodology, we implement a graphic Dialog Editor in which Models are organized in three levels (abstract, concrete and final) according to Cameleon Reference Framework (CFR) and, whose process respects the Model Driven Engineering (MDE) approach. Furthermore, the use of Dialog Editor is illustrated through a simple example (connection to an interactive system with a login and a password) and another more complex example (CTI Application, relative to CTI Company, intended to cover the activities of a company which is specialized in the international transfer of money and import express worldwide services). These two examples of use have revealed strong points of Dialog Editor, as well as certain gaps. Qualitative approach is used to evaluate Dialog Editor. The assessment plan is structured in three phases. In the first instance, in the form of an interview we presented an open questionnaire to the potential users, in order to have feedback of a more or less general nature. Then, we organized a satisfaction survey by making use of the IBM Computer Usability Satisfaction Questionnaires (CSUQ). Finally, to conclude this assessment, we have applied the respondents' comments to the ISO / CEI 9126 norm criteria to have a clearer vision of the useful and usable characteristics of Dialog Editor.

Tezėse nagrinėjamas hipertekstinės grafinės vartotojo sąsajos aprašymas aukšto abstrakcijos lygmens elementais, juos apibrėžiant deklaratyvia sintakse. Siūloma architektūra aprašo hipertekstinę grafinę vartotojo sąsają aukšto abstrakcijos lygmens elementais. Apibrėžiamas 20-ties esminių grafinių elementų rinkinys, deklaratyvi XML notacija ir suprojektuojama HTML grafinės vartotojo sąsajos biblioteka, veikianti JavaScript pagrindu bei užtikrinanti ženkliai greitesnį ir paprastesnį grafinės vartotojo sąsajos kūrimą. Pateiktas metodas neturi viešų analogų ir yra skirtas sudėtingiems grafinės vartotojo sąsajos sprendimams. Eksperimentiniais tyrimais parodoma, kad deklaratyvi notacija ir aukštas abstrakcijos lygmuo gali sumažinti programinį kodą nuo 3,1 karto trivialiems GUI elementams iki 204,1 karto sudėtingiems GUI sprendimams. Eksperimentai patvirtina, kad didėjant grafinę vartotojo sąsają sudarančių HTML elementų kiekiui, galima tikėtis dar geresnių efektyvumo rodiklių. Sukurta architektūra yra integruota į programinės įrangos projektavimo modelį, kuriame vartotojo sąsajos ir logikos kūrimas iš dalies automatizuotas naudojant UML modelį. Tradicinis tekstinis redaktorius pakeistas duomenimis paremtu projektavimo įrankiu, panaudos atvejai vystomi scenarijais su grafiniu redaktoriumi, duomenų infrastruktūra generuojama iš modelio, o realizacija pateikiama keliomis programavimo technologijomis.

In master theses hypertext graphical user interface definition using high abstraction level declarative syntax is analyzed and architecture model is suggested. Suggested architecture defines graphical user interface using high abstraction level elements. Basic element set of more than 20 elements is defined, declarative XML notation is suggested and graphical user interface library for HTML is developed with JavaScript to ensure much faster and easier standard-based graphical user interface development. Provided method has no public analogues yet and is suggested for complex graphic user interfaces. Experimental studies proved that declarative syntax and high abstraction level can reduce programming language code from 3.1 times on trivial GUI elements to 204.1 times on complex GUI solutions. Studies have showed that when the number of HTML elements composing graphical user interface grows, even better effectiveness can be achieved. Developed architecture is integrated in software development model where graphical user interface and logic are semi-automated using UML model. Traditional text editor is changed by data driven design tool, use-cases are developed using graphical editor, data infrastructure is build from the model and solution is delivered in several programming technologies.

▼ The Web is comprised of a vast quantity of text. Modern search engines struggle to index it independent of the structure of queries and type of Web data, and commonly use indexing based on Web‘s graph structure to identify high-quality relevant pages. However, despite the apparent widespread use of these algorithms, Web indexing based on human feedback and document content is controversial. There are many fundamental questions that need to be addressed, including: How many types of domains/websites are there in the Web? What type of data is in each type of domain? For each type, which segments/HTML fields in the documents are most useful? What are the relationships between the segments? How can web content be indexed efficiently in all forms of document configurations? Our investigation of these questions has led to a novel way to use Wikipedia to find the relationships between the query structures and document configurations throughout the document indexing process and to use them to build an efficient index that allows fast indexing and searching, and optimizes the retrieval of highly relevant results. We consider the top page on the ranked list to be highly important in determining the types of queries. Our aim is to design a powerful search engine with a strong focus on how to make the first page highly relevant to the user, and on how to retrieve other pages based on that first page. Through processing the user query using the Wikipedia index and determining the type of the query, our approach could trace the path of a query in our index, and retrieve specific results for each type. We use two kinds of data to increase the relevancy and efficiency of the ranked results: offline and real-time. Traditional search engines find it difficult to use these two kinds of data together, because building a real-time index from social data and integrating it with the index for the offline data is difficult in a traditional distributed index. As a source of offline data, we use data from the Text Retrieval Conference (TREC) evaluation campaign. The web track at TREC offers researchers chance to investigate different retrieval approaches for web indexing and searching. The crawled offline dataset makes it possible to design powerful search engines that extends current methods and to evaluate and compare them. We propose a new indexing method, based on the structures of the queries and the content of documents. Our search engine uses a core index for offline data and a hash index for real-time V data, which leads to improved performance. The TREC Web track evaluation of our experiments showed that our approach can be successfully employed for different types of queries. We evaluated our search engine on different sets of queries from TREC 2010, 2011 and 2012 Web tracks. Our approach achieved very good results in the TREC 2010 training queries. ▼ This dissertation introduces and empirically examines an attention-based theory of idea integration that underscores the importance of IS user interface design. The assumption is that presenting ideas via user interface plays a key role in enabling and motivating idea integration in electronic brainstorming (EBS), and thus advances productivity. Building upon Cognitive Network Model of Creativity (CNM) and ability-motivation framework, the attention-based theory proposed and tested in this dissertation focuses on two major attributes of user interface: visibility and prioritization. While visibility enables idea integration via directing attention to a limited set of ideas, prioritization enhances the motivation for idea integration by providing individuals with a relevant and legitimate proxy for value of the shared ideas. The laboratory experiments conducted as part of this dissertation’s research showed that although communicative idea integration (e.g. mere reference to partners’ ideas) increased when visibility increased, elaborative idea integration increased only when visible ideas where highly diverse. Laboratory experiments also indicated that the influence of prioritization on idea integration takes different forms for communicative idea integration and elaborative idea integration. While the effect of prioritization on communicative idea integration is significant through the mediating effect of perceived value of information, the effect of prioritization on elaborative idea integration is significant through the mediating effect of perceived value of idea integration. To further examine part of the unexpected results of the lab experiments, this dissertation introduces and computationally examines a model of idea integration that formulates the joint influence of (1) idea visibility as an electronic media feature, (2) attention to partners’ ideas as a cognitive attribute, and (3) individual’s experience with idea integration as a decision-making factor on idea integration in EBS. Results from this dissertation’s computational experiments suggest that the influence of idea visibility cannot be expressed in terms of simple effects of either attention or experience. Rather, the effect of visibility on idea integration is moderated by partners’ attention-experience disparities. Full description of the theory and the result of the experimental and computational studies and their implications will be presented in separate chapters. This dissertation’s research has implications for both the practice and research of knowledge management, especially for the attention-based view of the organization. ▼ Weil Übersetzerinnen und Übersetzer im Zuge ihre Tätigkeit mit Termini konfrontiert sind, benutzen sie Terminologiemanagementsoftware beim Übersetzen, um ihre Arbeit zu erleichtern sowie ihre Produktivität zu steigern und die Qualität ihren Übersetzungen dadurch zu erhöhen. Zusammen bilden das Datenmodell – welche Daten gespeichert werden können –, die Funktionalitäten – was mit den Daten gemacht werden kann – und das User Interface ein Softwareprodukt. Das User Interface ist die Kommunikationsstelle zwischen Mensch und Maschine, wo die Interaktion zwischen Mensch und Maschine durch unterschiedliche Sinneswahrnehmungen stattfindet, das Datenmodell nachgeschlagen und die Funktionalitäten aufgerufen werden. Beim Designen eines User Interface muss der Fokus vor allem auf die Bedürfnisse und Arbeitsabläufe der Zielgruppe gelegt werden, damit dieses eine gute Usability hat. Dabei stellen Übersetzerinnen und Übersetzer als Benutzerinnen und Benutzer einer Terminologiemanagementsoftware eine besondere Zielgruppe dar. Die quantitative empirische Forschung hat zum Ziel, sich mit den speziellen Bedürfnissen von Übersetzerinnen und Übersetzern als Benutzerinnen und Benutzer von Terminologiemanagementsoftware zu befassen und kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass diese gerne Terminologiemanagementsoftware, die in ein CAT-Tool integriert ist, oder Stand-Alone-Tools, die integrierbar sind und mehrsprachige Terminologiesammlungen verwalten können, verwenden. Sie brauchen nur eine limitierte Anzahl an Datenkategorien, die individuell anpassbar sein sollten. Da die Arbeitsabläufe von Übersetzerinnen und Übersetzern stark von Person zu Person variieren, sollte die Anordnung der Funktionalitäten nach thematischer Einheit erfolgen. Die so genannten Must-have-Funktionalitäten sind der Import und Export von Terminologiesammlungen, die manuelle Extraktion von Termini, das Anlegen neuer Terminologiesammlungen bzw. neuer Einträge in bestehende Terminologiesammlungen, die Suche nach Termini und das Editieren von Einträgen.

▼ Abstract Usability methodology has matured into a well-defined, industrially relevant field with its own findings, theories, and tools, with roots in applying information technology to user interfaces ranging from control rooms to computers, and more recently to mobile communications devices. The purpose is regularly to find out the users’ goals and to test whether a design fulfils the usability criteria. Properly applied, usability methods provide reliable and repeatable results, and are excellent tools in fine-tuning existing solutions The challenges of usability methodologies are in finding new concepts and predicting their characteristics before testing, especially when it comes to the relatively young field of mobile user interfaces. Current usability methods concentrate on utilising available user-interface technologies. They do not provide means to clearly identify, e.g., the potential of auditory or haptic output, or gestural input. Consequently, these new interaction techniques are rarely used, and the long-envisioned useful multimodal user interfaces are yet to appear, despite their assumed and existing potential in mobile devices. Even the most advocated and well-known multimodal interaction concepts, such as combined manual pointing and natural language processing, have not materialised in applications. An apparent problem is the lack of a way to utilise a usage environment analysis in finding out user requirements that could be met with multimodal user interfaces. To harness the full potential of multimodality, tools to identify both little or unused and overloaded modalities in current usage contexts are needed. Such tools would also help in putting possibly existing novel interaction paradigms in context and pointing out possible deficiencies in them. In this thesis, a novel framework for analysing the usage environment from a user-centric perspective is presented. Based on the findings, a designer can decide between offering a set of multiple devices utilising various user-interface modalities, or a single device that offers relevant modalities, perhaps by adapting to the usage environment. Furthermore, new techniques for creating mobile user interfaces utilising various modalities are proposed. The framework has evolved from the experiences gathered from the designs of experimental and actual product-level uni- and multimodal user interface solutions for mobile devices. It has generated novel multimodal interaction and interface techniques that can be used as building blocks in system designs.

▼ Search is a widely used tool. It is a standard element that can be found on websites, online stores and in most software applications. Search needs to be easily accessible and answer to the users' needs for them to continue using it. This study focuses on document search and how to improve search for M-Files. M-Files is an intelligent information management system that stores data based on its content. The users can access the document based on what it is instead of where it is. This requires an effective search that the users are comfortable using. The purpose of this study is to see if setting UX goals to document search can improve its usability. The study also focuses on how to find the right UX goals and how to use them in the design. In addition, the use of artificial intelligence to enhance user experience was studied. To be able to find the UX goals the users were consulted about their use of M-Files search. Based on the responses from the user questionnaire, three UX goals were formed: clarity, ease of use and controllability. Two prototypes were created based on the literature survey on designing search and the UX goals. The prototypes were identical, except that search filters were placed in different locations. Prototype A had filters on the right side of the layout, prototype B on the left. The prototypes were tested with eight users where they tested either the A or B prototype. The participants liked the improved design. They felt it was clearer, easier to use and it gave control for the users over the system. The added AI functionality was one element in improving usability. When the two designs were compared, prototype B with filters on the left side was a bit more efficient to use and it received higher scores from the participants. The results from this study show that setting UX goals to a document search can improve its usability. It also became apparent throughout this study that the research on other forms of search than web is lacking and requires further studies.

▼ The familiar computer graphic user interface (GUI) makes extensive use of visually representative devices such as folders and files. These symbols help the user deal with computer data and operations that otherwise have little or no physical form. The computer’s underlying complexity is symbolised for the user, who is then able to manipulate the computer by interacting directly with the interface. The early development of computer interface design was largely the domain of software and hardware developers. Many sound principles of user interaction and testing were established and provided essential guidance for new generations of interface designers. As computer technology and its tools became more widely available, a broader range of designers began contributing, including those from product design and visual communication. This study is written from the point of view of a “visual designer” – a designer who began his career in graphic design and who has moved towards interface design out of curiosity and a desire to proffer a different attitude and approach to interface issues. The study therefore will demonstrate a design process that many visual designers will be able to identify with. The process includes research, analysis, methodical progression and artistic inspiration. The artistic inspiration in this case comes from the Constructivist artist El Lissitzky, and will illustrate the significant contribution that art can make to interface design. This art-influenced design process was presented at the 2005 Ed-Media World Conference on Educational Multimedia, (Montreal, 2005). The enthusiastic response and discussion provided encouragement to continue in this direction. In the following year another presentation, which included the working prototype, was presented as part of a keynote speaker presentation at the 2006 Siggraph Taipei Conference, National Chiao Tung University, Taipei. The specific task chosen to work with in this study is that of Web browser history. As a user browses the Web the computer records a list of visited websites. The first few generations of browsers presented this information as a simple list, but this approach incorporated many flaws and caused problems for users. More recent browsers provide more options, but significant issues remain. This study offers solutions to several of these problems. The resulting design prototype is named “isoBrowser”. It is the result of the alternative design process outlined above and offers alternative methods of visualising, organising and manipulating data. The prototype is not intended to be fully functional nor “live”. However, it is sufficiently operable so as to test interface interaction and user response. A fully functional version, operably and aesthetically complete, would be the subject of further development.
