▼ Past investigations were mostly concentrated on the upwelling phenomena observed in the coastal region caused by the variations of topography and the influences of monsoon and oceanic currents. These upwelling are the major sources known to form the plankton production in the surface layer. Remote sensing techniques have been developed very fast recent years, more profound phenomena could be observed at the sea surface. The biggest advantage of using satellite-scanning technique is that larger area can be observed than before and have fewer limitations by weather. Short-term upwelling, such as the storm generated upwelling, can be traced. Lin (2003) reported cold sea surface temperature regions along two typhoon tracks from satellite images. Sea surface cyclonic eddies can usually be observed at the region of typhoon where covered with depressions and strong winds. It is often the place where the upwelling also occurred. Snapshot of satellite images also shown plankton in surface water could grow very quickly after the typhoon left, since enough nutrients have been supplied from deep water. Due to the high water temperature and evaporation rate in the SCS, it is a well know region of energetic weathering system where typhoon occurs quite often. In order to quantify the upwelling processes and study the effects of after-typhoon bloom, a set of numerical studies have been carried out since in-situ measurements are nearly impossible to be implemented. A European community model, COHERENS, has been applied to model the hydrodynamics in the SCS. Slight modification of the code has been done in order to introduce the wind and the pressure field inside typhoon using a parametric typhoon model. In this paper, a series of idealized typhoon cases have been designed, i.e. using various depths, wind intensities and the speed of moving, to identify the influences to vertical structure of the sea water. Simulation of a real case, typhoon Kai-Tai occurred from 6 July to 10 July 2000, will also presented. The model domain is from 3Â°N to 29Â°N and 99Â°E to 125Â°E with a resolution of 1/6 degree. ▼ Physical oceanographers have known for several decades the total amount of abyssal mixing and upwelling required to balance the deep-water formation, but are still working to understand the mechanisms and locations—how and where it happens. From observational studies, we know that areas of rough topography are important and the hundreds of Grand-Canyon sized canyons that line mid-ocean ridges have particularly energetic mixing. To better understand the mechanisms by which rough topography translates into energetic currents and mixing, I studied diffusive boundary layers over varying topography using theoretical approaches and idealized numerical simulations using the ROMS model. In this dissertation, I show a variety of previously unidentified characteristics of diffusive boundary layers that are likely relevant for understanding the circulation of the abyssal ocean. These boundary layers share many important properties with observed flows in abyssal canyons, like increased kinetic energy near topographic sills and strong currents running from the abyssal plains up the slopes of the mid-ocean ridges toward their crests. They also have a previously unknown capacity to accelerate into overflows for a variety of oceanographically relevant shapes and sizes of topography. This acceleration happens without external forcing, meaning such overflows may be ubiquitous in the deep ocean. These boundary layers also can force exchange of large volumes of fluid between the relatively unstratified boundary layer and the stratified far-field fluid, altering the stratification far from the boundary. We see these effects in boundary layers in two– and three–dimensions, with and without rotation. In conclusion, these boundary layer processes, though previously neglected, may be a source of a dynamically important amount of abyssal upwelling, profoundly affecting predictions of the basin-scale circulation. This type of mechanism cannot be captured by the kind of mixing parameterizations used in current global climate models, based on a bottom roughness. Therefore, there is much work still to do to better understand how these boundary layers behave in more realistic contexts and how we might incorporate that understanding into climate models.

▼ The distribution patterns of quartz and opal contents and the distribution patterns of radiolarian assemblages, in the sediments of the southeastern Pacific, are largely controlled by both the surface winds and the mixed-layer oceanic circulation. The distribution pattern of quartz is related to eolian and ice-rafted transport, as well as to runoff. In the subtropical region, quartz distribution extends offshore of Peru as a tongue in the same direction and position as the prevailing trade winds. Along the South American and Antarctic coast, high quartz concentrations are found in patches near shore or abundances commonly decrease rapidly seaward. Opal distribution follows the mixed-layer circulation around the subtropical anticyclonic gyre and shows high values under areas of oceanic divergence, characterized by high primary productivity. Along the continental margins, opal abundances are diluted by terrigenous debris; even off the Peruvian coast, where strong upwelling occurs and consequently high primary productivity prevails The distribution patterns of six radiolarian assemblages, defined through Q-mode factor analysis, reflect the geographical distribution of water masses associated with both surface and subsurface circulation. These are: 1) the surface Antarctic water mass, 2) the surface Subantarctic-Temperate water mass, 3) the Chile Current, 4) the Peru Current, 5) the surface Subtropical water mass and 6) the Equatorial Undercurrent. The Equatorial Undercurrent surfaces either because of strong trade winds or because of considerable relaxed trade winds. The above mentioned distribution patterns have shifted geographically during the Late Quaternary because of global climatic changes (glacial and interglacial stages). Fluctuations in the strength of the winds have been concurrent with fluctuations in the amount of ice stored on the continents, represented by the δ18O stratigraphic record, however, the direction and position of the winds have varied in a rather complex manner. Consequently, the oceanic circulation and associated water masses have presented a different behavior within each of the last five δ18O stages. Approximately 127,000 years ago, at the δ18O stage 5/6 boundary, the oceanographic conditions along the Pacific coast of South America were like the ones observed presently. During δ18O stage 5, weak trade winds, probably less parallel to the Peruvian coast than at the present, caused reduction in coastal upwelling and allowed advection of subantarctic-temperate waters, via the Chi1 Current, along the Peruvian coast. During δ18O stage 4, the trade winds were strong and more parallel to the equator, even to the east of the Galapagos Islands This gave rise to surfacing of the Equatorial Undercurrent through divergence processes Because of weak trade winds, the Galapagos front was positioned nearer to the South American coast during the lower part of stage 3. ▼ Molluscan shell O- and C-isotope values have been shown to be useful indicators of upwelling and freshwater input (and thus nutrient status) in nearshore marine environments, but few studies have had the accompanying long term measurements of water δ^18O (δw) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) δ^13C needed to best test the fidelity of shell isotope values as environmental indicators. Previously measured seawater δw and δ^13CDIC values collected biweekly from 2011-2012 allow us to determine if shell δ^18O and δ^13C values record temperature, δw, δ^13CDIC, and ultimately nutrient status in tropical waters. Conus, Vasum, and Strombus shell δ^18O values reflect predicted seasonal upwelling and freshening signals in the Pacific and seasonal freshening with minimal upwelling in the Caribbean. Both Pacific and Caribbean shell δ^13C profiles show cyclicity, but only Conus samples from Veracruz Beach (Pacific) record seasonal changes in δ13CDIC. This observation likely results from: (1) more distinct seasonal δ^13CDIC variation in Pacific waters compared with Caribbean waters and (2) greater availability of metabolic CO2 for shell growth in Strombus, which we hypothesize is related to greater activity associated with an herbivorous feeding habit. To examine N-isotope ratios (^15N/^14N) in tissues and shell organic matrix of bivalves as a proxy for natural and anthropogenic nutrient fluxes in coastal environments, Pinctada imbricata, Isognomon alatus, and Brachidontes exustus bivalves were live-collected and analyzed from eight sites in Bocas del Toro, Panama. Sites include a variety of coastal environments, including more urbanized, uninhabited, riverine, and oceanic sites. At all sites there is no single dominant source of organic matter contributing to bivalve δ^15N and δ^13C values. Bivalve δ^15N and δ^13C values likely represent a mixture of mangrove and seagrass N and C, although terrestrial sources cannot be ruled out. Despite hydrographic differences between end-members, we see minimal δ^15N and δ^13C difference between bivalves from the river-influenced Rio Guarumo site and those from the oceanic Escudo de Veraguas site, with no evidence for N from open-ocean phytoplankton in the latter. Lastly, δ^15N values of tissue and shell organic matrix correlate significantly for pterioideans P. imbricata and I. alatus. Thus for these species, N isotope studies of historical and fossil shells may provide records of ecology of past environments. ▼ A series of numerical experiments is conducted in order to examine the role of topographic irregularities in generation of subinertial cross-channel barotropic currents and to obtain quantitative estimates of the offshore flow amplitude, its ratio to the magnitude of the alongshore currents and the alongshore correlation scale. A periodic (along the coast) channel with geometry representative of continental margins is considered. Topographic disturbances have multiple alongshore wavenumber contributions, kT, and the amplitude proportional to kT-2 (except one experiment). The motion is forced by spatially uniform and temporally varying alongshore wind stress, which drives the background current along the channel. The background current adjusts to topographic disturbances and, in particular, Barotropic Shelf Waves (BSW) result. That gives rise to the offshore currents. The amplitude of the cross-channel flow is shown to increase with kT in the long wave limit (order of 100 km in the model) and, in contrast, to decrease with kT in the short wave limit (less than 20 km in the model). As a rule, the strongest response is attained on the intermediate scales where lee waves form most efficiently. Hart's {1990} quasi-geostrophic solution provided quantitative parameters to explain the scale dependence and helped to interpret the results of simulations meant to examine sensitivity of the cross-channel flow characteristics to variation of the governing parameters. It is shown that the structure of the resonant wave is established by the combination of spatial properties of the bottom bumps, and by the period and amplitude of the fluctuating background current. On the basis of this analysis, it is demonstrated how the BSW dispersion diagram can be used for diagnostic purposes. The averaged (in time and along the channel) amplitude of subinertial cross-channel currents ranged from negligible values to about 5.5 cm/sec, indicating that, indeed, rather substantial offshore flow can be generated due to the effect of the topographic irregularities. The alongshore correlation scale was no smaller than about 5 km and in a few simulations (for instance, with lee-wave-favourable mean wind included) reached 30 - 50 km.

▼ Pelagic ecosystems are inherently complex in coastal inlets where they are controlled by physical processes and influenced by biogeochemical and foodweb interactions. Meteorological events are important drivers of this ecological variability. This thesis investigates their effect on the plankton dynamics of Lunenburg Bay, an inlet on the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia (Canada). In this region, meteorological events are dominated by upwelling in summer, which are a dominant source of flushing and nutrient variability for the inlets. Despite these events, which induce phytoplankton blooms in other regions, the concentration of phytoplankton as chlorophyll remains relatively low throughout the summer in Lunenburg Bay. To reveal the underlying processes limiting the development of phytoplankton biomass, and therefore to improve our understanding of the factors regulating plankton dynamics in this inlet, the objectives of this thesis are to determine the main drivers of variability in phytoplankton biomass and plankton community structure, and to identify the factors limiting the development of phytoplankton biomass in Lunenburg Bay. For that, I use a dataset collected at a coastal observatory located in Lunenburg Bay that covers the years 2003–2006, complemented by a series of transects carried out in summer 2006. The dataset covers physical, chemical and biological properties of the bay, including plankton taxonomy. Two types of physical-biological coupled models are developed: a low-resolution box model of Lunenburg Bay with steady-state wind forcing, and a high-resolution nested model of Lunenburg Bay using the Regional Ocean Modelling System (ROMS) to hindcast a series of upwelling events in 2006. The results reveal that four factors regulate the phytoplankton response to upwelling events in Lunenburg Bay, namely (1) the duration of an upwelling event, (2) the low nitrate concentration in source waters, (3) the flushing rate of the inlet (hence transport), and (4) the bathymetry along the inshore-offshore axis of the bay. In addition, (5) the occurrence of upwelling and (6) the inshore-offshore gradient of increasing depth influence the structure of respectively phytoplankton and zooplankton communities, indicating a dissimilarity in the processes structuring plankton communities in the lower food web. A conceptual model is then developed to describe the role of transport and nitrate concentration in source waters in controlling plankton dynamics in an inlet. O estudo levado a cabo permitiu, pela primeira vez, identificar os eventos de frio 5 e 4 de Bond e o de 0,8 ka cal BP de deMenocal nos teores em radiocarbono das conchas e confirmá-los como fenómenos à escala global (circum-atlântico norte). Esses eventos revelam-se por valores positivos muito elevados de ΔR e são precursores de reorganizações climáticas. Os dois primeiros, datados de 7810±90 BP e de 5640±100 BP, respectivamente, foram apenas detectados na série de valores de ΔR (e de 13) determinados para a costa portuguesa, uma vez que as séries para a costa andaluza e para a costa galega se iniciam em 4580±110 BP, a primeira, e em 2440±29 BP, a segunda. O evento de frio de 0,8 ka foi determinado quer para a costa portuguesa quer para a costa galega com datas estatisticamente idênticas – costa portuguesa: 870±90 BP; costa galega: 860±90 BP. Além dos picos de ΔR correspondentes a estes três eventos, dois outros picos foram obtidos: um, datado por volta de 4000 BP e um outro cerca de 1100 BP. O primeiro, detectado quer para a costa portuguesa quer para a orla oriental do Golfo de Cádiz, deverá ser a tradução de um “upwelling” costeiro muito intenso, uma vez que o 13C das conchas analisadas apresenta valores positivos ao contrário do que sucede com os outros picos. Além disso, entre 4000 e 3200 BP terá havido uma época de secura, com expansão de espécies termomediterrâneas no noroeste alentejano, enquanto que no sudeste e, possivelmente, também no sudoeste espanhol, o intervalo de 4500 e 4000 BP, corresponderá a uma época de aridez e, por conseguinte, a uma insolação intensa, que se traduziu no aparecimento e intensificação do fenómeno do “upwelling” costeiro, como os valores positivos de ΔR que acompanham o pico de ca. 4000 BP da série andaluza sugerem. Então os dois picos aparentemente síncronos não o serão, tendo lugar, entre eles, uma reorganização climática cujo mecanismo forçador terá sido o evento 3 de Bond. O outro pico, em 1140±45 BP, foi só detectado na costa portuguesa, possivelmente ligado à reorganização climática que originou o Pequeno Óptimo Climático e o seu valor não resultará de qualquer intensificação do “upwelling” nesse momento. A análise das séries de valores de ΔR em função do tempo, conjugada com outros indicadores paleoclimáticos e paleoceanográficos, permitem ainda as seguintes conclusões: i) Entre o evento 8 de Bond (ca. 11100 cal BP) e o final do Pré-Boreal (até ao evento 7, ca. 10300 cal BP) terá existido na costa portuguesa um regime de “upwelling” costeiro, cuja intensidade terá aumentado ao longo desse período. ii) Durante o Boreal, a que corresponde um clima frio, terá ocorrido entre o evento 6 (ca. 9,4 ka cal BP) e o 5 (ca. 8,2 ka cal BP) um “upwelling” costeiro pouco activo ou mesmo inexistente, como os valores negativos para ΔR indiciam. iii) Os intervalos de tempo entre os eventos 5 e 4 (ca. 5,9 ka cal BP) e entre este e o 3 (ca. 4,2 ka cal BP ou ca. 4000 BP) encontram-se muito…

▼ The influence of large-scale processes on natural communities has become one of the central issues of modern ecology. I combined field and laboratory studies to investigate the effects of variation in coastal upwelling on rocky intertidal communities along the central Oregon coast. I examined whether the growth of intertidal barnacles (Balanus glandula and Chthamalus dalli) at two sites was linked to nearshore phytoplankton abundance. Short-term growth rates were low during a persistent upwelling event and increased two to three-fold during the subsequent relaxation of upwelling. Although this increase coincided with a large phytoplankton bloom at one site, parallel increases in growth occurred at a second site where no bloom was recorded. Published analyses of barnacle stomach contents suggest that zooplankton may be an important component of barnacle diets. Barnacle growth may thus be enhanced during upwelling relaxations through the combined benefits of more phytoplankton, more zooplankton, and warmer water temperatures. In laboratory studies, I tested the hypothesis that upwelling-related variation in water temperature regulates the feeding, growth, and energetics of two intertidal predators, the sea star Pisaster ochraceus and whelk Nucella canaliculata. Sea stars and whelks maintained at 9°C generally consumed 30% fewer mussels than those at 12°C. Animals that were exposed to cyclic temperatures (alternating between 12°C and 9°C every two weeks) tended to grow faster than those held at constant temperatures. Consumers in upwelling systems may thus feed intensely during periods of warmer water while benefiting from reduced metabolic costs during cold-water intrusions. I conducted field experiments to quantify the effect of small changes in water temperature on the interaction between a keystone predator, Pisaster ochraceus, and the intertidal mussel Mytilus californianus. Per capita and per population effects of sea stars on transplanted mussels were sharply reduced during a persistent cold-water upwelling event. Interannual variation in the frequency and intensity of upwelling may thus alter community dynamics through effects on this keystone interaction. Taken together, these studies suggest that upwelling-related variation in nearshore conditions can profoundly influence intertidal systems at the organismal, population, and community level. ▼ In-situ observation, remote sensing, analytic and numerical models are all important tools in physical oceanography research. In this dissertation, all of these tools, combined with upwelling indices, are used to explore coastal upwelling responses to wind stress, wind duration, shelf slope, tide, cape, and coastal canyon. First, two upwelling indices (UI) derived from remotely sensed data, which are related to offshore Ekman transport (UIW) and the sea surface temperature (SST; UISST), are evaluated to study the spatial and temporal variation of the Benguela Upwelling System (BUS). The comparison presents the advantages and disadvantages of using UISST and UIW to measure upwelling intensity, when chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration is used as a proxy for upwelling enhanced relative biomass. The causes for the discrepancies of temporal and spatial variations of UISST, UIW and Chl-a in the BUS area are discussed. By examining the UISST, UIW and Absolute Dynamic Topography (ADT) at 27-28oS, it is found that the extension of the upwelling band is largely impacted by the anti-cyclonic eddy there. Furthermore, this dissertation discusses the Benguela Niños in 2006, and estimates the contribution from the wind to the total upwelling intensity off Hondeklip and Cape Columbine based on these remote sensing data. Second, to understand the differences in upwelling tendency between the east and west coasts of the U.S., idealized analytical and numerical model experiments were performed to examine upwelling responses to wind and shelf slope. The primary results show that steeper slope leads to narrower cross-shore width of surface Ekman divergence (WSED) and larger vertical velocity, while stronger upwelling favorable wind stress induces a broader WSED and larger vertical velocity. Meanwhile, wind duration is substantial to determine both the area and intensity of upwelling off a coast. The tendencies for cold upwelling areas off both coasts are compared by the upwelling age, which is defined as the ratio of the duration of upwelling favorable wind to the advection time. The advection time, defined as the time scale for cold water to be advected from the pycnocline to the ocean surface, is improved to comprise of climbing time and upwelling time. The latter is related to the upwelling divergence driven by surface Ekman flow. The depth of the "turning point" of these two processes is approximately 0.9DE where DE is the Ekman depth. The new formula for the advection time is found to be consistent with estimates derived from the use of particle trajectory analysis in the numerical model. The consideration of upwelling age shows that differences in wind forcing are more important than bottom slope when accounting for different characteristics of upwelling areas off the California and New Jersey coasts. ▼ The purpose of the present study was to apply data collected monthly over a 6-year period along the almost 200 km long St. Helena Bay Monitoring Line in the Southern Benguela upwelling system to investigate co-variation between an upwelling index calculated from nearby wind records and physical and chemical properties along the transect. The extent to which the well-documented seasonal upwelling cycles is manifested at the surface along an inshore-offshore variation was investigated in the context of implications for the validity of remote sensing as a monitoring tool in this ocean area and to improve understanding of the physical drivers of biological processes in St. Helena Bay. This study shows that surface temperature and nutrient concentrations exhibit very poor seasonality and weak correlation with the upwelling index. This is, despite clear evidence for spatial inshore-offshore gradients in temperature, nutrients, and chlorophyll-a, consistent with an upwelling regime. The upper ocean temperature gradient shows a much better correspondence to the upwelling index but at the same time demonstrates that surface heating, and not vertical mixing related to upwelling, controls the upper ocean temperature gradient. In this study linear lagged correlations were also examined and discussed to gain insight into the effect upwelling has on the surface waters in St. Helena Bay with the view of determining the following: (1) Does upwelling lead to an increase or decrease of the water properties? (2) What is the characteristic lag between an upwelling event and its effect on these water properties? (3) Is the effect and/or lag different for the different seasons? and (4) Is the effect and/or lag different for stations inside the bay and those outside the bay?. A combination of surface turbulent cooling through upwelling occurred after a lag of 8 to 10 days in winter and early summer, but less than half in late summer, similar to results obtained with salinity. However, the rest of the salinity results fit in poorly with the temperature results. The only significant correlation obtained with the inshore stations during late summer is the inexplicable positive correlation at a lag of 7 days. For all three seasons virtually none of the oxygen results fit the expected pattern. All three nutrients showed a more positive correlation coefficient and significance than the negative ones. Significant negative correlations occurred mainly during late summer at lags of 7 to 9 days caused by planktonic depletion of nutrients. Also, in this season, significant positive correlations between south-north wind and nutrients only occurred at short lags. This observation supports the earlier temperature-based conclusion that the influence of upwelling develops most rapidly at this time of the year. ▼ The aim of this thesis was to assess the influence of upwelling on alga-grazer interactions in rocky shore communities along the south coast of South Africa using grazer exclusion treatments with controls and procedural controls set out in a block design and monitored for algal cover roughly monthly for one year. In the first experiment grazers were excluded from treatment plots at two upwelling and two non-upwelling sites and the rates of algal biomass accumulation were then compared. The upwelling sites showed significantly faster algal colonisation rates, with Ulva rigida being the first species to colonise the rocks. Final algal cover and biomass did not differ significantly between upwelling and non-upwelling sites in control plots open to grazers, but were significantly higher in grazer exclusion plots at upwelling sites indicating stronger grazing effects. This was confirmed by estimating the intensity of grazing using the log-response ratio (LRR), which was calculated from treatment and control plots. Upwelling sites had significantly lower LLR values indicating stronger grazing effects, than at non-upwelling sites, despite no difference in grazer abundances. The second experiment examined the effects of nutrient addition on algal growth and community composition by comparing high nutrient enrichment plots with low enrichment plots at one upwelling and one non-upwelling site. ANOVA indicated faster growth rates and significantly higher final algal biomass in high enrichment plots compared to low enrichment and control plots at both upwelling and non-upwelling sites. A two-way ANOVA indicated significantly higher algal cover in high enrichment plots compared to the data from the grazer exclusion plots in experiment 1 at both sites, suggesting that nutrient addition plays a major role in algal growth and community composition. The findings of these studies have shown significant differences between treatments, sites and seasons, with significant differences not only occurring in algal cover but also accumulation of algal biomass and recruitment patterns between treatments. The small scale local processes acting within a few centimetres (plots) or tens of meters (among blocks) can also be reflected over larger scales such as sites (upwelling/non-upwelling shores). Further, these studies have demonstrated that various factors such as the effects from increased nutrients at upwelling cells and the change in grazing effects due to enhanced nutrients can determine the abundance and diversity of the community structure, including an increase in the abundance of the fast growing algae Ulva rigida, and a slow recovery of the brown and red algae.

▼ Dans le cadre de l’implantation d’une centrale pilote à énergie thermique des mers (ETM) prévue au large des côtes caribéennes de la Martinique d’ici 2020, ces travaux de thèse visent à évaluer les impacts potentiels de la décharge d’eau profonde en surface sur le phytoplancton. La centrale pilote offshore NEMO conçue par DCNS et mise en oeuvre par Akuo Energy prévoit une production d’environ 10 MW. Les eaux froides et riches en nutriments pompées au fond et rejetées en surface par la centrale ETM avec un débit d’environ 100 000 m3.h-1 devraient enrichir les eaux de surface du site d’étude, particulièrement pauvres en nitrate et phosphate. Deux campagnes de mesures sur le terrain à deux saisons contrastées (saison humide en juin 2014 et saison sèche en novembre 2013) ont permis d’apporter une description des différents paramètres physiques et biogéochimiques susceptibles d’induire une modification de la communauté phytoplanctonique. Une variabilité saisonnière marquée de la stratification et des paramètres biogéochimiques a été mise en évidence avec en saison humide une forte influence océanique (advection d’eaux originaires de l’Amazone et de l’Orénoque) et atmosphérique (brumes des sables) enrichissant potentiellement la couche de surface en nutriments et en métaux traces. Des microcosmes in situ ont été développés afin de simuler le rejet d’eau de fond dans la couche de surface sous différents scénarios. De l’eau de surface prélevée dans le maximum de chlorophylle (45 m, où le phytoplancton est le plus abondant) et à la base de la couche euphotique (80 m, où le phytoplancton est présent en très faible abondance) a été enrichie avec un faible (2%) ou fort apport (10%) d’eau de fond (1100 m) et mise à incuber in situ pendant 6 jours. La production primaire a également été estimée dans le milieu naturel et dans les microcosmes. Ces expérimentations ont mis en évidence qu’un fort apport (10%) stimule le développement du micro-phytoplancton, des diatomées en particulier, au détriment des Prochlorococcus, tandis qu’un apport de 2% ne modifie que faiblement la communauté. La réponse des diatomées pourrait être liée à l’apport en nitrate et phosphate par les eaux profondes. La production primaire serait quant-à-elle dépendante de l’assemblage phytoplanctonique en présence, plutôt que de l’intensité de l’apport d’eau profonde. Enfin, les perturbations thermiques liées au rejet d’eau froide de fond ont été évaluées à partir du modèle numérique ROMS. Les seuils d’impact thermique de -3°C préconisés par la World Group Bank et de -0,3°C correspondant à 2% de dilution d’eau profonde ont été considérés. Même au seuil le plus bas (-0,3°C), la surface impactée sur les premiers 150 m de la colonne d’eau était trop faible pour être détectable par la simulation, quelle que soit la profondeur du rejet. L’impact thermique lié au rejet d’eau froide devrait donc être négligeable, et elle serait limitée à moins de 3 km2. ▼ L’extrémité sud du système du courant des Canaries comprend un centre d’upwelling (résurgence localisée d’eaux froides sous l’action de vents favorables) qui a jusqu’ici reçu peu d’attention. Ma thèse porte sur la dynamique de ce centre d’upwelling sud Sénégal ou SSUC (Southern Senegal Upwelling Center en anglais). Elle s’intéresse donc à la circulation et à la structure thermohaline sur le large plateau sud-sénégalais, entre la côte et _100-200 km au large en se focalisant sur la période d’upwelling (Novembre-Mai). Une des particularités de la zone est la séparation entre la zone d’upwelling au centre du plateau et des eaux plus chaudes au large et à la côte. Mes travaux combinent analyse d’images satellite et d’observations in-situ, avec la réalisation et l’analyse de simulations numériques dans l’état de l’art. Par une analyse fine des conditions physiques de la zone, ils posent la base à une approche intégrée du fonctionnement de l’environnement marin sénégalais. Une première partie des résultats se base sur l’examen et l’analyse de plus de 1500 images satellite de température de surface de la mer SST MODIS, contextualisées par rapport aux conditions synoptiques de vent. Cette analyse met en lumière l’existence d’états récurrents du SSUC, en termes de SST. Elles confirment plus généralement la régularité et la stabilité du fonctionnement dynamique du système, mais aussi révèlent des aspects subtils de la structure de l’upwelling : refroidissement des eaux de surface probablement dû au déferlement et au mélange associé à la marée interne ; interaction complexe entre la remontée locale, le courant de Mauritanie et le jet côtier ; complexité probable des échanges entre les différentes parties du plateau (plateau intérieur accueillant des eaux réchauffées, plateau central où est fréquemment situé la langue d’eau froide). L’amplitude du cycle diurne suggère que de grandes incertitudes restent à lever dans le budget de chaleur de l’upwelling . Les limites des études soulignent la nécessité de continuer la mesure in situ dans le SSUC, en particulier des vents. Le fonctionnement dynamique du SSUC est aussi étudié par la modélisation hydrodynamique (ROMS) à haute résolution (_2km). Différentes simulations ont été réalisées en variant les forçages (climatologiques ou synoptiques pour le vent ; modification fine échelle des flux de chaleur en domaine côtier ; présence ou absence de marée). Les solutions numériques montrent en général un bon accord avec les observations satellite et in situ disponibles. Ces solutions éclairent le fonctionnement dynamique du système notamment en termes de circulation, de position de remontée d’upwelling, mais également du devenir des eaux upwellées grâce à une analyse lagrangienne. Nous avons notamment pu montrer que la zone nord du SSUC est la zone principale de remontée et les eaux qui y remontent, proviennent en grande majorité de la zone sud du SSUC d’où elles sont amenées par le courant de Mauritanie. ▼ Le système d’upwelling Nord-Ouest africain au large du Maroc, de la Mauritanie et du Sénégal est le système le plus productif au monde en terme de biomasse planctonique. La zone sénégalo-mauritanienne, située dans la partie Sud du système, soutient une importante pêcherie de Sardinella aurita, l’espèce de petit poisson pélagique la plus abondante. Dans ces systèmes la dynamique des populations de petit poisson pélagique comme la sardinelle est très liée à la variabilité de l’upwelling. Ainsi le succès du recrutement des juvéniles de poisson dépend fortement de la circulation locale où les larves peuvent être, soit retenues dans les zones de nourriceries côtières favorables à leur survie, soit dispersées vers la large où elles sont soumises à la prédation et au manque de nourriture. Dans un contexte de gestion de cette ressource partagée par plusieurs pays, comprendre les facteurs qui contrôlent les stocks des petits pélagiques le long des côtes, est un enjeu crucial pour les pêcheries de ces régions.Le premier objectif de ce travail de thèse est d’utiliser pour la première fois dans le système sénégalo-mauritanien une approche de modélisation individu centré (IBM) visant à étudier les premiers stades de vies (oeufs et larves) de la sardinelle, et à comprendre l’influence des paramètres environnementaux sur la dynamique des populations. L’évolution des individus dans leur environnement est étudiée à partir de simulations océaniques régionales dont les sorties sont utilisées comme forçages du modèle IBM.Les résultats obtenus renseignent sur la rétention larvaire en fonction des lieux et dates de ponte. L’impact de la migration verticale et de l’effet de seuil de températures létales sur la survie des larves a également été évalué. Nous montrons que la stratégie de ponte de Sardinella aurita résulte de la combinaison de deux facteurs : (1) une rétention élevée associée à la circulation locale et (2) à la disponibilité en nourriture. Le modèle révèle également une importante connectivité larvaire entre les différentes sous-zones de ponte et le Sud du système. Ceci souligne l’importance d’une gestion concertée du stock de la sardinelle à l’échelle régionale.Le second objectif de la thèse est d’étudier la variabilité interannuelle de l’habitat de ponte de la sardinelle à l’intérieur de ces zones de rétention larvaire. Un modèle couplé physique biogéochimie (ROMS-PISCES) est utilisé pour évaluer l’habitat de ponte de la sardinelle. Le volume potentiel de l’habitat de ponte (PHV) est défini comme une fonction de la température, de la salinité et de la profondeur. Nous avons également utilisé le PHV, la biomasse de plancton, le succès de la rétention et de la survie des larves pour étudier la variabilité interannuelle de l’abondance de sardinelle et les années de fort recrutement estimées à partir des campagnes acoustiques d’évaluation de stock menées durant la période 1996-2006.
