▼ Sodium-bentonite (Na-bentonite) is a highly active clay commonly used as a barrier or a component of a barrier for chemical containment applications (e.g., landfills, waste impoundments, vertical cutoff walls) due to the ability of Na-bentonite to limit solute (contaminant) transport resulting from high swell and low hydraulic conductivity. However, Na-bentonite also may exhibit semipermeable membrane behavior or solute restriction, which can result in enhanced performance of the barrier by reducing liquid and contaminant flux. Experimental studies to date have focused on the correlation between membrane behavior and diffusion of solutes almost exclusively under fully saturated conditions (i.e., degree of water saturation, S, of 1.0). However, clay barriers can exist at various degrees of water saturation (S < 1.0), and, based on our current, conceptual understanding of the mechanisms causing membrane behavior in saturated clays, the influence of membrane behavior on solute transport is likely to be even more significant in clays under unsaturated conditions. Based on these considerations, an innovative testing apparatus was developed to allow for the simultaneous measurement of membrane behavior and diffusion in unsaturated Na-bentonite. The test specimens were prepared using a dialysis method that allowed for control of the cation species on the exchange complex of the bentonite, removal of excess soluble salts, and estimation of diffusion properties. Membrane efficiencies (ω) and effective diffusion coefficients (D*) of bentonite specimens with S ranging from 0.79 to 1.0 were measured by performing multistage tests using solutions of potassium chloride (KCl). The source concentrations (Cot) of the KCl solutions were 20 mM, 30 mM, and 50 mM, which resulted in average concentrations in the specimen at steady-state diffusion (Cave) of approximately 10 mM, 15 mM, and 25 mM. For all values of S, a decrease in S correlated with an increase in ω and a decrease in D*. For example, for Cot of 50 mM, ω increased from 0.31 to 0.41 and D* for chloride decreased from 4.1 x 10-10 m2/s to 3.1 x 10-10 m2/s as S decreased from 1.0 to 0.84. The results of this study advance our fundamental understanding of solute transport mechanisms in Na-bentonite and contribute to the base of knowledge that must be established prior to incorporating membrane behavior effects in the design of barriers for chemical containment facilities. ▼ Unsaturated swelling clays are used in engineered barriers for waste disposal facilities due to their self-sealing ability and low hydraulic conductivity. The characterization of unsaturated clay behaviour is required for design of these barriers. In recent years, several small-scale laboratory and full-scale field tests have been conducted to characterize the mechanical and hydraulic behaviour of the unsaturated swelling clay. This focus of the present study is towards the development of constitutive models to simulate hydraulic and mechanical behaviour of precompacted unsaturated swelling clay, called the bentonite-sand buffer (BSB) material. Development, calibration, implementation, and application of the proposed constitutive models form the scope of the study. The results of laboratory triaxial tests with controlled suction and suction measurements are used to calibrate the constitutive models presented. An algorithm, called the PEM (Parameter Evaluation Method), which is useful to estimate constitutive model parameters and evaluate the performance of constitutive models is proposed. This algorithm has been used to estimate the parameters of two elasto-plastic constitutive models (i.e., the BBM (Alonso et al. 1990) and the BGM (Blatz and Graham 2003)) based on the laboratory tests results on the BSB material. New 3-dimensional porosity-dependent permeability model (kwn) and water retention surface (WRS) are developed in this study. The mathematical formulations of these models using parameters calibrated with laboratory tests conducted on the BSB material are provided. Implementation algorithms of the BBM, the BGM, the kwn, and the WRS in 2-phase flow hydraulic-mechanical (H-M) analysis using a 2D-finite difference method are also provided . Three combinations of hydraulic and mechanical constitutive models (linear elastic model, BGM, vanGenuchten (1980) and kwn models) are used to simulate small-scale infiltration processes in the BSB material. Two types of tests, constant volume (CV) and constant mean stress (CMS) tests are simulated using 2D-finite difference H-M analysis. The full-scale isothermal test (ITT) of AECL is modelled using 3 combinations of H-M constitutive models. The ITT experiment comprises of buffer, rock, and concrete materials. The selected combinations of H-M constitutive models are used in three types of analyses: buffer-only (BO); buffer-rock with 20x30m domain (BR); and time-dependent boundary conditions (BCt). The results of the study show that the applications of the elasto-plastic mechanical constitutive models and porosity-dependent permeability (kwn) model are improvements over existing constitutive models to model this class of problem. The rock properties and applied boundary conditions are significant in modelling the ITT experiment. ▼ The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in shear strength and excess pore water pressure of unsaturated clay and dense sand subject to increased strain rates. Consolidated undrained (CU) and unconsolidated undrained (UU) triaxial compression tests were performed on specimens of compacted clay performed at axial strain rates ranging from 0.1 %/min to 14.5 %/min at degrees of saturation ranging from 100% to 75%. In addition, CU tests were performed on saturated, dense sand at axial strain rates ranging between 1.1 %/min and 220 %/min, and consolidated drained (CD) tests were performed on oven-dry sand at axial strain rates ranging from 1.1 %/min to 4.4 %/min. Results from the CU tests on saturated clay (degree of saturation equal to 100 %) show an increase in undrained shear strength of 13.8% and a decrease in the magnitude of positive excess pore water pressure with increasing axial strain rate. These findings are consistent with results from classic studies on normally consolidated soils by Casagrande and Shannon (1948) and Richardson and Whitman (1963) as well as compacted soils by Olson and Parola (1967). The undrained shear strength of unsaturated compacted clay also increases with increasing axial strain rate as well as increases in matric suction. However, the excess pore water pressure at failure measured for unsaturated tests at a higher strain rate first increased from the saturated value at a low suction and then decreased at a higher suction (lower degree of saturation). The rate of increase in the shear strength of unsaturated clays having suction values up to 140 kPa (degrees of saturation greater than 75%) was found to be less than that of the clay under saturated conditions. UU tests on compacted clay at different initial compaction water contents confirms the trend of shear strength increase with increased strain rate and lower degree of saturation. Overall, the results from these tests support the hypothesis that rate effects in clays occur due to the difference in the hydraulic conductivity of the soil, which affects the rate of drainage of excess pore water pressure, and the axial strain rate, which affects the rate of generation of excess pore water pressure. The difference in these two rate effects leads to a decrease in the positive excess pore water pressure at failure for faster axial strain rates, which causes the effective stress to increase within an undrained clay specimen. The results from the CU tests on saturated sand show an increase of 33% in undrained shear strength and a decrease in the magnitude of negative pore water pressure at failure with increasing axial strain rate. However, CD tests performed on dry sand indicate that the shear strength at failure does not change with increasing axial strain rate. These observations indicate that the rate effect in saturated dense sand likely occurs due to an increase in the amount of dilation with increasing axial strain rate, which affects the magnitude of negative pore water pressure. ▼ This thesis presents an investigation of reactive transport of species in porous media, with the aim to understand better and predict the fate of radionuclide in engineered and natural barriers of future deep geological disposal facilities for nuclear waste. The work involves developments of several pore-scale models for simulating reactive transport by coupling convective, adsorptive and diffusive processes. Pore network models (PNM) are amongst the appealing approaches that provide a suitable description for dealing with mutable pore space structures. Such models have been used to describe conservative as well as reactive transport in saturated and unsaturated porous media. In the present thesis, pore network models based on a regular tessellation of truncated octahedral cells are proposed and developed to simulate mass transport in porous media with incomplete pore space information due to limitation of existing characterisation techniques. Bentonite and Opalinus Clay are selected to illustrate the methodology. The micro- and meso-structure of these clays and their effects on the transport behaviour are investigated. The research shows that the clays are anisotropic and heterogeneous with fast diffusion parallel to the bedding plane and slow diffusion perpendicular to the bedding plane. In addition, different types of species have different accessible porosity and macroscopic diffusion coefficients. The anisotropy and heterogeneity of clays are achieved by different length scales and percentage of pores in different directions in the pore network models. The transport behaviour of various species, including sorption and anion exclusion, is simulated and analyzed. The effect of sorption is simulated via changing the pore radii by a coarse grained mathematical formula or by a formula directly in each pore. The results are in good agreement with experimentally measured macroscopic (bulk) diffusivities for the materials studied, including anisotropic diffusion coefficients. This lends strong support to the physical realism of the proposed models. The developed methodology can be used for any micro and meso-porous material with known distribution of pore sizes. It can be extended to other pore space changing mechanisms, in addition to sorption, to derive mechanism-based evolution laws for the transport parameters of porous media.

This thesis presents an investigation of reactive transport of species in porous media, with the aim to understand better and predict the fate of radionuclide in engineered and natural barriers of future deep geological disposal facilities for nuclear waste. The work involves developments of several pore-scale models for simulating reactive transport by coupling convective, adsorptive and diffusive processes.Pore network models (PNM) are amongst the appealing approaches that provide a suitable description for dealing with mutable pore space structures. Such models have been used to describe conservative as well as reactive transport in saturated [1] and unsaturated porous media [2, 3]. In the present thesis, pore network models based on a regular tessellation of truncated octahedral cells are proposed and developed to simulate mass transport in porous media with incomplete pore space information due to limitation of existing characterisation techniques. Bentonite and Opalinus Clay are selected to illustrate the methodology. The micro- and meso-structure of these clays and their effects on the transport behaviour are investigated. The research shows that the clays are anisotropic and heterogeneous with fast diffusion parallel to the bedding plane and slow diffusion perpendicular to the bedding plane. In addition, different types of species have different accessible porosity and macroscopic diffusion coefficients. The anisotropy and heterogeneity of clays are achieved by different length scales and percentage of pores in different directions in the pore network models. The transport behaviour of various species, including sorption and anion exclusion, is simulated and analyzed. The effect of sorption is simulated via changing the pore radii by a coarse grained mathematical formula or by a formula directly in each pore. The results are in good agreement with experimentally measured macroscopic (bulk) diffusivities for the materials studied, including anisotropic diffusion coefficients. This lends strong support to the physical realism of the proposed models.The developed methodology can be used for any micro and meso-porous material with known distribution of pore sizes. It can be extended to other pore space changing mechanisms, in addition to sorption, to derive mechanism-based evolution laws for the transport parameters of porous media

▼ Les matériaux à base de bentonite sont envisagés pour la réalisation des ouvrages de fermeture dans les concepts de stockage de déchets radioactifs. Dans ce contexte, les matériaux mis en place sous forme de mélanges de granules (pellets) de bentonite sont étudiés car ils présentent moins de contraintes d’installation comparés aux blocs préfabriqués. Les pellets sont disposés dans les galeries à l’état sec et forment un matériau granulaire. Le matériau est humidifié par l’eau issue de la roche encaissante et acquiert une texture homogène. Avant homogénéisation, le caractère granulaire du matériau contrôle son comportement.Ce travail se concentre sur la caractérisation expérimentale et la modélisation numérique d’un mélange de pellets et pellets concassés (poudre) de bentonite en proportion 70/30 en masse sèche, envisagé pour réaliser les ouvrages de fermeture dans le concept français de stockage de déchets radioactifs. La proposition, l’implémentation et la validation d’un modèle de comportement tenant compte de la nature granulaire initiale et d’éventuelles hétérogénéités locales de densité est l’objectif principal de ce travail.L’influence de la nature granulaire est mise en évidence par l’intermédiaire d’essais de pression de gonflement à succion contrôlée au laboratoire. Les essais sont réalisés sur des échantillons préparés à différentes teneurs en poudre. A partir d’une caractérisation expérimentale à l’échelle du pellet, un modèle simple décrivant le comportement hydromécanique du pellet est proposé et implémenté dans un code de calcul utilisant la méthode des Éléments Discrets (DEM). Les essais réalisés au laboratoire sur les échantillons sans poudre sont simulés par la DEM et le modèle proposé. Les résultats expérimentaux sont reproduits de manière satisfaisante. Cette méthode est utilisée pour simuler de larges assemblages granulaires de densités variées soumis à des sollicitations hydromécaniques. Les paramètres influençant le comportement macroscopique des assemblages de pellets à l’état « granulaire » sont identifiés à partir de ces simulations. Un ensemble de lois de comportement sont proposées pour modéliser le matériau comme un milieu continu.La transition de l'état granulaire à l’état homogène est décrite par des critères faisant intervenir la succion et les fractions volumiques relatives des pellets et de la poudre. Une version modifiée du Barcelona Basic Model est proposée pour modéliser le comportement du matériau à l’état « homogène ». Le modèle est implémenté dans le code de calcul par Éléments Finis (FEM) BIL. Darbe atlikta teorinė analizė parodė, kad labai svarbus vaiko kalbos ugdymo principas – kompleksiškumas, kuriame menas vis dažniau tampa svarbia grandimi jungiant pedagogų darbą su specialiųjų poreikių vaikais, nes kuriant sudaromos sąlygos vaikų bendravimo, kalbėjimo įgūdžiams formuoti. Vis dažniau molis, kaip dailės terapijos plastinė medžiaga, naudojamas visose dailės terapijos sferose, ypač edukacinėse programose. Iškelta hipotezė, kad vaikų ugdymo veikloje naudojamas lipdymas iš molio yra veiksmingas vaikų kalbai ugdyti. Atliktas veiksmo – veiklos tyrimas, kurio tikslas – sukurti ir išbandyti praktinį lipdymo iš molio veiklos modulį bei atskleisti jo veiksmingumą vaikų kalbai ugdyti. Tyrime dalyvavo 9 ikimokyklinio amžiaus vaikai, turintys įvairaus lygmens, nuo nežymaus iki žymaus, kalbos neišsivystymą. Pagrindiniai tyrimo ugdytinių atrankos kriterijai: kalbos sutrikimai, ikimokyklinis amžius. Tyrimas vyko dviejose grupėse, vedant vaikams užsiėmimus su moliu. Empirinėje dalyje rezultatai nagrinėjami kokybinės analizės metodu – išskiriami, nagrinėjami lyginamosios analizės metodu. Buvo analizuojama kiekvieno vaiko kalbos plėtotė bei skaičiuojamos pavartotos kalbos dalys, žiūrint paveikslėlius ir lipdant iš molio, fiksuojamas pokytis. Analizės atskleidė svarbiausias tyrimo išvadas: 1. Atlikus mokslinės literatūros analizę, sukurtas praktinis lipdymo iš molio veiklos modelis, skatina vaikų kalbos plėtotę. 2. Theoretical analysis carried out in the work disclosed that a very important principle of child speech development is complexity, where art more and more often becomes an important link between work of pedagogues and children of special needs, because conditions for the development of children’s communication and speech are formed when creating. A hypothesis was raised, that clay modeling used in the activities of children’s development is effective on development of children speech. An action-activity research was carried out, the purpose of it was to create and test a practical clay modeling module and to reveal its effectiveness on development of children speech. 9 preschool children, having speech backwardness of various levels, insignificant and significant, participated in the research. The main criteria of the selection of children for the research: speech disorder, preschool age. In the empirical part the results were analyzed using qualitative analysis method – collected, analyzed using comparative analysis method. ▼ Detailed quantitative mineralogical analysis and physical studies were made of twenty nine Cainozoic clays from different parts of Tasmania. The clays are mainly of Tertiary age and are both residual and sedimentary in origin. The geological occurrences of the clays are described and their mineralogy discussed. The two main methods of analysis consisted of X-ray diffraction techniques and differential thermal analysis; iron determinations were made on four selected samples. The differential thermal method of analysis in conjunction with X-ray diffraction examination proved advantageous in detecting an abnormal montmorillonite which was characterised by a lower dehydroxylation peak at about 550°C. The clays can be divided into five types, on the basis of their mIst abundant clay mineral, as follows: 1.Clays rich in kaolinite 2.Clays having abnormal montmorillonite as the dominant clay mineral. 3.Clays characterised by mixed layer minerals of illite and montmorillonite, as both randomly stacked and ordered structures. 4.Clays characterised jointly by kaolinite and abnormal montmorillonite. 5. Clays predominantly kaolinites with gibbsite. Quartz was abundant in all the clays. Other minor constituents included; illite, feldspar, goethite, gibbsite, matahalloysite, calcite, chlorite, haematite, muscovite, mixed layer minerals and organic matter: The clay minerals were used as indicators to interpret tentatively the environment of deposition during the Cainozoic Era. The possibility exists that different clay minerals might have formed in the weathered zones at different periods in the geological history of the area as a result of changes of micro- chemical climate. In the 36' bored at Sandy Bay the mineral composition revealed no diagenetic change with the accumulation of the clays. Most of the clays required a high proportion of tempering water. Drying and firing characteristics were related to clay mineralogy. Of the two chief mineralogical groups, clays which consist primarily of kaolinite are of medium plasticity and shrinkage, light coloured on firing and moderttely refractory. Another group of clays with abnormal montmorillonite, or mixed ATMinerale have high plasticity and sh±inkage, are very slow in drying, orange - red burning and low - refractory.

▼ Novelist Ayi Kwei Armah and poet Nicolás Guillén are, respectively, Ghanaian and Cuban writers who embody the efforts of mid-twentieth-century artists to depict the day-to-day socio-political conditions and struggles of societies seeking to move beyond histories of racial and economic oppression. Both engage powerfully and controversially with ongoing debates around damaging colonial histories and disappointing contemporary realities. The achievement of independence did not usher in the new, improved nations sought by way of struggle and suffering in either country. Uncompromisingly, Armah’s and Guillén’s works portray both the irredeemable parts of colonial histories and those that can be put to the benefit of the present, together with the tension that this disparity between expectation and achievement engenders. Granted the varied nature of the subject matter of the works of the two authors and the seeming lack of relation between them, this study makes use of a selection of theoretical frameworks to find common ground for analysing their work. The analysis of Nicolás Guillén’s poetry is based on concepts fundamental to Latin American social and cultural criticism, notably, the ideology of whitening or blanqueamiento, cultural mixing or mestizaje, and feminist criticism. The study of Ayi Kwei Armah’s first novel The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born (1968) employs socio-cultural theories including traditional Ghanaian concepts such sankofa and the Akan symbol of adinkra, together with Jean Paul Sartre’s concept of the “engaged writer.” This thesis argues that, in spite of their different national and ethnic backgrounds, both writers draw on traditional aspects of African culture to provide the impetus for social and cultural regeneration in their societies. Critics have read Armah as presenting disillusioned and decadent images of Ghana and promoting limited roles for women in his work. Guillén too has been portrayed by critics as offering an objectified representation of women in his poetry of the 1920s and 1930s and has been accused of ignoring, as a poet of meztizaje or ethnic mixture, the issues of Blacks and Blackness. This thesis contests these limiting critical positions, arguing that the writers’ representations of women, Blacks and Blackness are more positive and progressive than has been allowed. Acknowledging the burden of racist histories, the false promise of postcolonial liberation, the blatant corruption and the unrealised expectations of their times, they nevertheless allow for the possibility of regeneration in the societies they both dissect and, in part, restore. ▼ This dissertation investigates the topic of scholarship in the Information Systems (IS) discipline through a series of three papers. The papers, presented in Chapters 2, 3, and 4, each delve into a specific chronological period of IS scholarship which are delineated into the past, present, and future. Chapter 2 elucidates the IS discipline’s ‘past’ by categorizing the entire corpus of extant research in the Association of Information Systems Senior Scholars’ Basket of eight journals. Clusters derived from these mainstream journal publications represent a thematic identity of the IS discipline. After analyzing the corpus altogether, further analysis segments the corpus into shorter, 5-year periods to illuminate the historical evolution of the themes. Lastly, interpretations of the trends and a recommendation to curate an IS Body of Knowledge are discussed. Chapter 3 surveys business school deans and IS academics eliciting their ‘present’ social representations of the IS discipline. It then seeks the two groups’ feedback regarding their level of agreement with concerns attributed to the IS discipline as summarized in Ives and Adams (2012). Group responses are evaluated independently and are juxtaposed for between-group analysis. Then, additional concerns are gathered to ensure the full range of issues are represented. Network topic maps illustrate the findings, and interpretations are discussed. Group differences suggest that IS academics are more critical of the IS discipline than business school deans. In Chapter 4, an alternative research approach is offered for conducting ‘future’ scholarship efforts in the IS discipline. A framework that organizes discourse on the emergent crowdsourced research genre is constructed. Prior to building the framework, a crowdsourcing process model is developed to conceptualize how problems and outcomes interact with the crowdsourcing process. The internal process components include task, governance, people, and technology. Then, the crowdsourcing process model is applied to eight general research process phases beginning with the idea generation phase and concluding with the apply results phase. Implementation of the crowdsourced research framework expounds phase-specific implications as well as other ubiquitous implications of the research process. The findings are discussed, and future directions for the IS crowd are suggested.
