▼ Stochastic differential equations(SDEs) play an important role in many branches of engineering and science including economics, finance, chemistry, biology, mechanics etc. SDEs (with m-dimensional Wiener process) arising in many applications do not have explicit solutions, which implies the development of effective numerical methods for such systems. For SDEs, one can classify the numerical methods into three classes: fully implicit methods, semi-implicit methods and explicit methods. In order to solve SDEs, the computation of Newton iteration is necessary for the implicit and semi-implicit methods whereas for the explicit methods we do not need such computation. In this thesis the common theme is to construct explicit numerical methods with strong order 1.0 and 1.5 for solving Itˆo SDEs. The five-stage Milstein(FSM)methods, split-step forward Milstein(SSFM)methods and M-stage split-step strong Taylor(M-SSST) methods are constructed for solving SDEs. The FSM, SSFM and M-SSST methods are fully explicit methods. It is proved that the FSM and SSFM methods are convergent with strong order 1.0, and M-SSST methods are convergent with strong order 1.5.Stiﬀness is a very important issue for the numerical treatment of SDEs, similar to the case of deterministic ordinary differential equations. Stochastic stiffness can lead someone to use smaller step-size for the numerical simulation of the SDEs. However, such issues can be handled using numerical methods with better stability properties. The analysis of stability (with multidimensional Wiener process) shows that the mean-square stable regions of the FSM methods are unbounded. The analysis of stability shows that the mean-square stable regions of the FSM and SSFM methods are larger than the Milstein and three-stage Milstein methods. The M-SSST methods possess large mean square stability region as compared to the order 1.5 strong Itˆo-Taylor method. SDE systems simulated with the FSM, SSFM and M-SSST methods show the computational efficiency of the methods. In this work, we also consider the problem of computing numerical solutions for stochastic delay differential equations(SDDEs) of Itˆo form with a constant lag in the argument. The fully explicit methods, the predictor-corrector Euler(PCE)methods, are constructed for solving SDDEs. It is proved that the PCE methods are convergent with strong order γ = ½ in the mean-square sense. The conditions under which the PCE methods are MS-stable and GMS-stable are less restrictive as compared to the conditions for the Euler method. Advisors/Committee Members: Raha, Soumyendu.

▼ Efficient management of limited water resources in an irrigation reservoir system is necessary to increase crop productivity. To achieve this, a reservoir release policy should be integrated with an optimal crop water allocation. Variations in hydrologic variables such as reservoir inflow, soil moisture, reservoir storage, rainfall and evapotranspiration must be considered in the reservoir operating policy model. Uncertainties due to imprecision, subjectivity, vagueness and lack of adequate data can be handled using the fuzzy set theory. A fuzzy stochastic dynamic programming (FSDP) model with reservoir storage and soil moisture of the crops as fuzzy state variables and inflow as a stochastic variable, is developed to obtain a steady state reservoir operating policy. The model integrates the reservoir operating policy with the crop water allocation decisions by maintaining the storage continuity and the soil moisture balance. The reservoir release decisions are made in the model in 10-day periods and water is allocated to the crops on a daily basis. On comparison with the classical stochastic dynamic programming (SDP) model and a conceptual operation policy model, it is observed that the FSDP model, in general, results in lower release from the reservoir while maintaining lower soil moisture stress. However the steady state reservoir operation policy obtained using the FSDP model may not perform well in a short-term reservoir simulation. A fuzzy state short-term reservoir operation policy model with storage and soil moistures of the crops as fuzzy variables, is developed to obtain a real time release policy using forecasted inflow and forecasted rainfall. The distinguishing features of the model are accounting for (a) spatial variation of soil moisture and rainfall using gridded rainfall forecasts and (b) ponding depth requirement of the Paddy. On comparison with a conceptual operation policy model, the fuzzy state real time operation model is found most suitable for the application of the short term real time operation for irrigation. The real time operation model maintains high storage in the reservoir during most of the 10-day time periods of a year and results in a slightly lower annual releases as compared to the conceptual operation policy model. The effect of inflow forecast uncertainty is examined using different sets of forecasted inflows, and it is observed that the system performance is quite sensitive to inflow forecast uncertainties. The use of the satellite based gridded soil moisture in the real time operation model shows consideration of realistic situations. ▼ Problems involving optimal sequential making in uncertain dynamic systems arise in domains such as engineering, science and economics. Such problems can often be cast in the framework of Markov Decision Process (MDP). Solving an MDP requires computing the optimal value function and the optimal policy. The idea of dynamic programming (DP) and the Bellman equation (BE) are at the heart of solution methods. The three important exact DP methods are value iteration, policy iteration and linear programming. The exact DP methods compute the optimal value function and the optimal policy. However, the exact DP methods are inadequate in practice because the state space is often large and in practice, one might have to resort to approximate methods that compute sub-optimal policies. Further, in certain cases, the system observations are known only in the form of noisy samples and we need to design algorithms that learn from these samples. In this thesis we study interesting theoretical questions pertaining to approximate and learning algorithms, and also present an interesting application of MDPs in the domain of crowd sourcing. Approximate Dynamic Programming (ADP) methods handle the issue of large state space by computing an approximate value function and/or a sub-optimal policy. In this thesis, we are concerned with conditions that result in provably good policies. Motivated by the limitations of the PBE in the conventional linear algebra, we study the PBE in the (min, +) linear algebra. It is a well known fact that deterministic optimal control problems with cost/reward criterion are (min, +)/(max, +) linear and ADP methods have been developed for such systems in literature. However, it is straightforward to show that inﬁnite horizon discounted reward/cost MDPs are neither (min, +) nor (max, +) linear. We develop novel ADP schemes namely the Approximate Q Iteration (AQI) and Variational Approximate Q Iteration (VAQI), where the approximate solution is a (min, +) linear combination of a set of basis functions whose span constitutes a subsemimodule. We show that the new ADP methods are convergent and we present a bound on the performance of the sub-optimal policy. The Approximate Linear Program (ALP) makes use of linear function approximation (LFA) and oﬀers theoretical performance guarantees. Nevertheless, the ALP is diﬃcult to solve due to the presence of a large number of constraints and in practice, a reduced linear program (RLP) is solved instead. The RLP has a tractable number of constraints sampled from the original constraints of the ALP. Though the RLP is known to perform well in experiments, theoretical guarantees are available only for a speciﬁc RLP obtained under idealized assumptions. In this thesis, we generalize the RLP to deﬁne a generalized reduced linear program (GRLP) which has a tractable number of constraints that are obtained as positive linear combinations of the original constraints of the ALP. Two stage processes consisting of precursor preparation by thermal evaporation followed by chalcogenisation in the required atmosphere is found to be a feasible technique for the PV materials such as n-Beta In2S3, p-CulnSe2, p-CulnS2 and p-CuIn(Sel_xSx)2. The growth parameters such as chalcogenisation temperature and duration of chalcogenisation etc have been optimised in the present study.Single phase Beta-In2S3 thin films can be obtained by sulfurising the indium films above 300°C for 45 minutes. Low sulfurisation temperatures required prolonged annealing after the sulfurisation to obtain single phase Beta-1n2S3, which resulted in high material loss. The maximum band gap of 2.58 eV was obtained for the nearly stoichiometric Beta-In2S3 film which was sulfurised at 350°C. This wider band gap, n type Beta-In2S3 can be used as an alternative to toxic CdS as window layer in photovoltaics .The systematic study on the structural optical and electrical properties of CuInSe2 films by varying the process parameters such as the duration of selenization and the selenization temperature led to the conclusion that for the growth of single-phase CuInSe2, the optimum selenization temperature is 350°C and duration is 3 hours. The presence of some binary phases in films for shorter selenization period and lower selenization temperature may be due to the incomplete reaction and indium loss. Optical band gap energy of 1.05 eV obtained for the films under the optimum condition.In order to obtain a closer match to the solar spectrum it is desirable to increase the band gap of the CulnSe2 by a few meV . Further research works were carried out to produce graded band gap CuIn(Se,S)2 absorber films by incorporation of sulfur into CuInSe2. It was observed that when the CulnSe2 prepared by two stage process were post annealed in sulfur atmosphere, the sulfur may be occupying the interstitial positions or forming a CuInS2 phase along with CuInSe2 phase. The sulfur treatment during the selenization process OfCu11 ln9 precursors resulted in Culn (Se,S)2 thin films. A band gap of 1.38 eV was obtained for the CuIn(Se,S)2.The optimised thin films n-beta 1n2S3, p-CulnSe2 and p-Culn(Sel-xSx)2 can be used for fabrication of polycrystalline solar cells.

▼ Uncertainties in both loading and structural characteristics can adversely affect the response and reliability of a structure. Parameter uncertainties in structural dynamics can arise due to several sources. These include variations due to intrinsic material property variability, measurement errors, manufacturing and assembly errors, differences in modeling and solution procedures. Problems of structural dynamics with randomly distributed spatial inhomogeneities in elastic, mass, and damping properties, have been receiving wide attention. Several mathematical and computational issues include discretization of random fields, characterization of random eigensolutions, inversion of random matrices, solutions of stochastic boundary-value problems, and description of random matrix products. Difficulties are encountered when one has to include interaction between nonlinear and stochastic system characteristics, or if one is interested in controlling the system response. The study of structural systems including the effects of system nonlinearity in the presence of parameter uncertainties presents serious challenges and difficulties to designers and reliability engineers. In the analysis of large structures, the situation for substructuring frequently arises due to the repetition of identical assemblages (substructures), within a structure, and the general need to reduce the size of the problem, particularly in the case of non-linear inelastic dynamic analysis. A small reduction in the model size can have a large effect on the storage and time requirement. A primary structural dynamic system may be coupled to subsystems such as piping systems in a nuclear reactor or in a chemical plant. Usually subsystem in itself is quite complex and its modeling with finite elements may result in a large number of degrees of freedom. The reduced subsystem model should be of low-order yet capturing the essential dynamics of the subsystem for useful integration with the primary structure. There are two major issues to be studied: one, techniques for analyzing a complex structure into component subsystems, analyzing the individual sub-system dynamics, and from thereon determining the dynamics of the structure after assembling the subsystems. The nonlinearity due to support gap effects such as supports for piping system in nuclear reactors further complicates the problem. The second is the issue of reviewing the methods for reducing the model-order of the component subsystems such that the order of the global dynamics, after assembly, is within some predefined limits. In the reliability analysis of complex engineering structures, a very large number of the system parameters have to be considered as random variables. The parameter uncertainties are modeled as random variables and are assumed to be time independent. ▼ Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative organism of the disease tuberculosis (TB) in humans, leads to nearly two million deaths each year. This versatile pathogen can exist in highly distinct physiological states such as asymptomatic latent TB infection where bacilli lie dormant or as active TB disease in which the bacilli replicate in macrophages. The pathogenic lifestyle requires the tubercle bacillus to sense and respond to multiple environmental cues to ensure its survival. Such stimuli include hypoxia, nutrient limitation, presence of reactive oxygen and reactive nitrogen intermediates, pH alterations, and cell wall/ membrane stress. Two component systems (TCSs) form the primary apparatus for sensing and responding to environmental cues in bacteria. A prototypical TCS is composed of a sensory protein called sensor kinase (SK) and a response generating protein called response regulator (RR). M. tuberculosis encodes 11 genetically paired TCSs, 2 orphan sensor kinases and six orphan response regulator proteins. Studies of the TB bacilli using transcriptional profiling and gene knockouts have revealed that TCSs play an important role in facilitating successful adaptation to diverse environmental conditions encountered within the host. The mtrAB and prrAB genes encoding corresponding TCSs have been shown to be essential for survival, mprAB for persistence and devRS for hypoxic adaptation. Further, inactivation of the TCSs regX3-senX3, tcrXY, trcRS, phoPR or kdpDE was shown to affect the growth and/or virulence of M. tuberculosis in animal infection models. The SK and RR proteins of TCSs are modular and contain variable input and output domains coupled to conserved ‘transmitter’ and ‘receiver’ domains. Despite the modular nature and extensive homology of SK and RR proteins across TCSs, which may allow non-cognate interactions, it is believed that crosstalk across different TCSs is not favored and that individual pathways are generally well insulated. The existing profiling studies have been performed on the TCSs of bacterial species containing a relatively large number of TCSs. In those studies, specificity and insulation have been the norm and thus become the prevalent paradigm of TCS signaling. In vitro genome wide phosphotransfer profiling has revealed only a few cross- communication nodes in the TCSs of Escherichia coli (~3%), while none in Caulobacter crescentus (in 352 interactions tested, in short time duration) and Myxococcus xanthus (in 250 interactions tested). Yet, many instances of cross talk have been reported in literature. For example, E. coli TCSs PmrAB and EnvZ-OmpR show cross-communication with QseBC and ArcBA, and many more. In M. tuberculosis, indirect evidence of the existence of such cross regulation has originated from studies where mutations in phoPR have been shown to affect the expression of the TCS devRS and its regulon. ▼ Optimization problems involving uncertainties are common in a variety of engineering disciplines such as transportation systems, manufacturing, communication networks, healthcare and finance. The large number of input variables and the lack of a system model prohibit a precise analytical solution and a viable alternative is to employ simulation-based optimization. The idea here is to simulate a few times the stochastic system under consideration while updating the system parameters until a good enough solution is obtained. Formally, given only noise-corrupted measurements of an objective function, we wish to end a parameter which minimises the objective function. Iterative algorithms using statistical methods search the feasible region to improve upon the candidate parameter. Stochastic approximation algorithms are best suited; most studied and applied algorithms for funding solutions when the feasible region is a continuously valued set. One can use information on the gradient/Hessian of the objective to aid the search process. However, due to lack of knowledge of the noise distribution, one needs to estimate the gradient/Hessian from noisy samples of the cost function obtained from simulation. Simple gradient search schemes take much iteration to converge to a local minimum and are heavily dependent on the choice of step-sizes. Stochastic Newton methods, on the other hand, can counter the ill-conditioning of the objective function as they incorporate second-order information into the stochastic updates. Stochastic Newton methods are often more accurate than simple gradient search schemes. We propose enhancements to the Hessian estimation scheme used in two recently proposed stochastic Newton methods, based on the ideas of random directions stochastic approximation (2RDSA) [21] and simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (2SPSA-31) [6], respectively. The proposed scheme, inspired by [29], reduces the error in the Hessian estimate by (i) Incorporating a zero-mean feedback term; and (ii) optimizing the step-sizes used in the Hessian recursion. We prove that both 2RDSA and 2SPSA-3 with our Hessian improvement scheme converges asymptotically to the true Hessian. The key advantage with 2RDSA and 2SPSA-3 is that they require only 75% of the simulation cost per-iteration for 2SPSA with improved Hessian estimation (2SPSA-IH) [29]. Numerical experiments show that 2RDSA-IH outperforms both 2SPSA-IH and 2RDSA without the improved Hessian estimation scheme. Advisors/Committee Members: Bhatnagar, Shalabh.
