In the psychological literature the transition to parenthood has been always considered a critical period for the couples. This process should begin during the pregnancy, the period during which the couple’s relationship should develops from the original dyadic structure to a new triangular structure.
It must be underlyned the importance of the process of “renovation” of the relationship. This process includes the acquisition of the parental role and protects relavant marital and parental aspects such as the feeding of the marital relationship.
Despite couples’ awerness of the importance to cope with the changes that the transition entails, often result unprepared. In this sense the perinatal period can be seen as a potentially stressfull event.
This dissertation aims to study the possible paths of transition to parenthood focusing on partener’s psychological well-being and distress in relation to their perception of the quality of the couple’s relationship.
The results show different trajectories of psychological well-being and distress in the perinatal period and a relation between the couples’ psychological condition and their perception of the quality of couple’s relationship.

The general aim of this research is to investigate, through a multi-dimensional model, how Felt Obligation, defined in the dimensions of maintenance contacts and family rituals, repayment in the relationship and personal sharing, are delineated and build in family relationships. First study’s aim is to identify the factorial structure of Felt Obligation Measure in the Italian context. Felt Obligation Measure is the only instrument in literature by which people could report feelings about their obligations to fulfill in their family relationships. Second study’s aim is to investigate the generational and individual implications of Felt Obligation into two different generations (middle – adults and young adults). Finally, the third study is aimed to examine Felt Obligation in young adults’ families . The transition to adulthood in Italy is characterized by a prolonged co-habitation of two generations of adults; therefore the aim is to enhance the role of Felt Obligation in this specific phase of the life cycle and how they are linked to specific variables of family functioning (family satisfaction and family identity).

We examined the role of parental divorce and gender in young adults' involvement in dysfunctional family processes, as well as in their difficulties of separation-individuation and their psychological well-being.
The first study is quantitative and was conducted with a sample of 264 subjects, aged between 20 and 30, who filled in a self report questionnaire. Results showed that children of divorced parents express more feelings of unfairness towards their family of origin, and emphasize their emotional independence from their parents. Females feel the burden of emotional caregiving for their parents more than males and are more vulnerable to depression. Moreover, females are more afraid of losing their parents' love.
In the second study we used a mixed method approach to study generational boundaries and separation-individuation difficulties in a small sample of young women with divorced parents. Results showed that the transition to adulthood may either be hindered by the emotional burden of children's responsibilities towards the parents (especially the mother) or accelerated by the need to put one's familiar experience at a distance.
In the third study, through two case studies, we explored some of the results obtained in the multimethodological section. This analysis suggested the importance of considering the role of the paternal function in helping young women separate from their…

▼ Adolescence is a period of development associated with
a host of biological, psychological, cognitive, and social changes,
and it has been widely acknowledged that the family is a persistent
and powerful context in which these changes occur. To further
understand the links between the family ecology and youth
well-being, each of the three studies comprising this dissertation
examined how distinct aspects of family ecology were related to
youths’ psychosocial adjustment. Study 1 used a sample of high
school students from the National Study of Adolescent Health (N =
7,786) to identify patterns of positive development and examine the
role family capital played in these patterns. A four-profile
solution revealed Average, High Self-Esteem, Below Average, and
High Achiever Profiles. Multinomial logistic regressions revealed
that parent human and economic capital predicted increased odds of
being in the High Achiever Profile, and social capital predicted
increased odds of being in the High Self-Esteem Profile. Moderator
analyses produced evidence of cumulative promotive effects by
revealing that family social capital exacerbated the benefits of
other types of family capital for positive development. Studies 2
and 3 focused on parental knowledge, which refers to the degree to
which parents are informed about their youths’ daily experiences.
Study 2 explored how youth gender, age, and family members’
relationship quality predicted five sources of mothers’ and
fathers’ knowledge in a relatively understudied population:
two-parent African American families with two youth (N = 187).
Multilevel models revealed that older siblings disclosed less to
parents than younger siblings. A quadratic youth age pattern
indicated that fathers asked youth fewer questions in early
adolescence compared to childhood and later adolescence, which
coincided with higher levels of relying on spouse and siblings.
Warmer parent-child relationships predicted higher levels of
relying on multiple sources of knowledge for mothers and fathers,
including child disclosure and solicitation. Drawing from family
systems perspective, warmer marital relationships predicted relying
on spouse, and warmer parent-sibling relationships predicted
relying on siblings for information. Study 3 took an in depth look
at conceptualization and measurement of parental knowledge. Whereas
some researchers have measured parents’ or youths’ perceptions of
knowledge, others have examined daily knowledge. We therefore
examined multilevel models that included three distinct parental
knowledge indicators in a sample of European American families with
two adolescent youth (N = 175). Mothers’, fathers’, and youths’
perceived knowledge were each negatively related to youths’ risky
behavior, and youth reported fewer depressive symptoms when mothers
and fathers were seen by youth as more knowledgeable. Independent
of perceived knowledge, however, when fathers’ daily knowledge was
higher, youth reported fewer depressive symptoms. Moreover, when
youth perceived fathers to be more…

▼ This study examined confiding patterns among the adult population of the U.S. about problems in marriages and long-term committed relationships. Specific areas of interest were the prevalence, nature of the relationships, types of problems confided about and most and least helpful confidant responses. An Internet panel was used to collect data from a nationally representative sample of 1000 U.S. adults aged 25-70. Results showed that 73.3% of U.S. adults reported ever having been a confidant to someone with a couple relationship problem, while 62.6% had themselves confided in someone about a relationship problem. Women were more likely to be confidants than men, as were individuals with more education. The most common confiding relationship was between friends, followed by siblings. Confidants had a wide range of marital problems brought them, including common issues such as disagreements over money along with serious issues such as infidelity and divorce. The most helpful confidant responses were reported to be listening and giving emotional support; least helpful responses were talking too much about him or herself and being critical and judgmental. Professionals who work with families and couples can use this information to better understand their client's support networks and the potential influence of confiding relationships within a couple's social network.

The general aim of this research work is to enrich the literature on emerging adults’ financial well-being with research methodologies and statistical techniques never previously applied in this research field. Specifically, the first chapter of this thesis concerns the scoping methodology, a knowledge synthesis methodology that I adopted to identify the emerging adults’ financial well-being definition, components, predictors and outcomes. The second chapter consists in the application of a new statistical technique, Latent Transition Analysis, that I used to identify subgroups of emerging adults homogeneous in their configuration of adult social markers already reached and to investigate the relation between these emerging adults’ subgroups and their financial well-being. The third chapter describes a three-step methodology to develop and validate new measurement instruments, based on the contemporary view of validity proposed in the last fifty years. This three-step procedure was here applied to develop and validate a new instrument measuring subjective financial well-being for an emerging adult target population. Finally, the fourth chapter concerns the multiple informant methodology that I applied to collect information about family financial socialization and its impact on the child’s financial well-being from mother, father and the emerging adult child.

▼ Relationship
distress has deleterious effects on mental health, physical health, and quality of life. Although many couples report relationship
distress, one barrier to seeking services is that one member of a
couple may be too busy or refuse to participate. Relationship interventions offered to individuals have shown promising efficacy, but, as most are offered in-person, barriers on their reach remain. Using a randomized design, the present study tested the efficacy of a fully web-based relationship intervention for individuals (OR-Individual). The program was adapted from the couples version of the OurRelationship program (OR-
Couple), which is effective in increasing relationship and individual functioning (Doss et al., 2016). Results indicated that OR-Individual significantly improved quality of life (
d = 0.62) and showed a trend in reducing relationship negatives (
d = -0.25) during treatment. In general, relationship and individual functioning improvements were maintained through three-month follow-up. When comparing the efficacy of OR-Individual and a demographically-matched subsample of OR-
Couple, results showed that OR-Individual was more effective in improving quality of life during treatment (
d = 0.67). Change in other variables did not significantly differ by program. Thus, with some adaptations, OR-Individual is a viable option for individuals seeking relationship help. Limitations and future directions are discussed in-depth.

The research’s aim is to give some educational proposals in order to improve the well being at work. In order to achieve this aim, it has been detected how the world of work is changing. However, to be able to look the work from a pedagogical point of view, I have made a reflection studying the education’s classical authors, in order to find some categories, that are useful to understand the work. For this research I have made 3 case studies in excellent companies in Brescia, engaged to improve the relations with their internal and external stakeholders.

This work is focused on the identity process among adolescents and young adults internationally adopted and their well-being.
The four studies that compose this dissertation are characterize by the quantitative approach and the assumption of a family perspective.
The first study explore well-being, ethnic identity, family relations and the perception of social context among adoptees and their parents.
The second study identifies a type of identity of adoptees for different patterns of ethnic identification and national. The type of adoptees shows differences with respect to the quality of family relations, well-being and multiple motives on identity construction.
The third study develops a model of the explanatory factors determining the adoptees well-being; it confirms the influence of some family and social variables on identity processes and assess whether adoptees’ identity is related to psychosocial well-being.
The fourth study is focused on the perception of cultural socialization and discrimination as predictors of ethnic identity in Italy and the USA, highlighting common aspects and specific cultural differences.
The results show that family relations and the degree of integration between two cultural identities are important protective factors for psychosocial adjustment and well-being of adoptees. Parents play a vital role in supporting this process through cultural socialization strategies.

This thesis is a collection of three essays on poverty, inequality and well-being for Brazil. The first chapter aims at understanding the key determinants of the Brazilian inequality. this chapter firstly sketches a poverty and inequality analysis for Brazil and then investigates the main determinants of inequality, particularly racial and geographical differences, by applying several decomposition techniques. the second chapter investigates Brazilian poverty by exploiting geographical differences and questions whether the standard approach in measuring poverty is informative enough taking into consideration that the population is clearly heterogeneous. The first two chapters of this work apply techniques able to measure and decompose both poverty and inequality within the context of the standard monetary approach. The purpose of the last chapter is to enlarge the perspective of our analysis by adopting the capability approach. hence the third chapter aims to model and estimate the health functioning production function as a relation that conveys to what extent people are able to convert private and public resources into the achievement of the specific functioning being healthy .

▼ This study explores the experiences of retirement village residents as they move from an independent to a supported living environment within a retirement village. It focuses on residents’ perceptions of their transitions and adopts a qualitative approach to understand the nature of their transitions and the way in which they are experienced. A grounded theory framework is used in order to capture the meanings that participants apply to concepts such as home, and to the physical, social, personal and veiled spaces in which they live.
The findings from the study reveal that as residents’ health fails, the impact of increasing dependence is such that their sense of social and personal autonomy is gradually eroded. The research also provides insights into residents’ expectations and fears surrounding end of life. In many ways the experiences of the residents in supported living environments do not differ greatly from those of residents in any aged care facility. One major finding of this research, however, is the debilitating impact on well-being that occurs as a consequence of these transitions from independent to supported living, taking place within one physical location – the retirement village – a physical space which promises prospective residents the opportunity for active and positive ageing.

▼ Many individuals across the world own dogs for a variety of reasons. For some individuals, dogs can be viewed as providing the most important relationship in their lives. Others may own dogs for protection, companionship, and even health benefits. Some families across the world view their dogs as family members and a vital aspect of the family unit. This study explored the perceived bond between a human and a dog and how this bond influenced the human‟s psychological well-being. Although studies have been conducted on the human-companionate dog bond, empirical research on the perceptions of the bond between a dog and a human and the influence it has on an individual‟s psychological well-being, falls short. Studies on the human-companionate bond have been on the rise internationally, yet studies in this field in the South African context are scarce. This study contributes to psychology‟s broad body of knowledge regarding the human-companionate dog bond and identifies the important influences the bond has on human psychological well-being. The researcher utilized a qualitative research approach. A non-probability purposive sample was employed and semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven participants. Two participants were male and five were female. All participants had developed a bond with their dog and were able to speak English fluently. Interviews were conducted until data saturation was reached. Results demonstrate that having a human-companionate dog bond can enhance an individual's psychological well-being. Themes identified demonstrate that a human-companionate dog bond can enhance physical health, relational well-being, and mental health. This bond also fulfils specific individual needs which enhance psychological well-being. Limitations of the study and recommendations for further research are identified.

▼ This thesis research was conducted to identify factors that impact the psychological well-being of refugees from Burma who have been resettled in Australia. Qualitative analysis of interviews conducted within the first year of resettlement, and again at four years and five years post-resettlement demonstrated that refugee well-being is influenced by the context of resettlement and the continuity of existing relationships. Results have implications for immigration policy and contribute to knowledge of understanding and assisting with the process of resettlement.

▼ Three papers investigate the role of adult attachment
relationships in affect regulation, quality of work experience, and physical and psychological
well-
being. The first paper examines the effect of activating mental representations of attachment figures (mother or romantic partner) on affective recovery following an upsetting autobiographical memory recall. Three experiments show that activating the mental representation of an attachment figure (vs. an acquaintance or a stranger) enhances recovery by reducing negative affect and negative thinking. Moreover, a meta-analysis of the three experiments revealed that avoidant attachment was associated with reduced recovery effects. Finally, the magnitude of affective recovery due to activating the romantic partner representation predicted psychological and physical health in daily life. Although these experimental findings indicate that romantic attachments lead to better affect regulation as
well as mental and physical health, receiving support from a romantic partner in daily life has sometimes been linked to worse outcomes. The second paper investigates the circumstances under which received partner support is or is not harmful for physical health. Findings from a 10-year longitudinal study revealed that perceived partner responsiveness moderates the association between received partner support and all-cause mortality. For participants who perceived their partners as unresponsive, received partner support was indeed associated with an increase in all-cause mortality risk, even after controlling for demographic factors, initial health status, health behaviors, psychological
well-
being, and personality traits. However, this association was eliminated if the romantic partner was perceived as responsive. Finally, the third paper investigates the association between perceived partner responsiveness and quality of work in two daily experience studies. Perceived partner responsiveness was associated with increased quality of daily work experience which, in turn, predicted greater daily goal progress among young adults and greater life satisfaction among middle-aged and older adults. Furthermore, daily stress exposure was associated with lower decline in quality of work for individuals who perceived their partners as responsive, indicating that perceived partner responsiveness buffers against the detrimental effects of daily stress on quality of work. Taken together, the three papers contribute to our growing understanding of the role of attachment
relationships in adult functioning.

▼ Despite the
well-established effectiveness of
couple therapy for reducing
distress and improving relationship satisfaction (Cohen, 1988; Christensen and Heavey, 1999), less than a fourth of couples seek
couple therapy prior to divorce (Albrecht, Bahr, and Goodman, 1983; Wolcott, 1986). Rather, the majority of couples wait over 5 years before seeking therapy (Johnson et al., 2002). Barriers to seeking individual therapy are
well established and are associated with decreased rates of therapy attendance and the negative consequences of untreated
distress and mental health problems (Corrigan, 2004; Killaspy, Banerjee, King, and Lloyd, 2000; Vogel, Wade and Hackler, 2007). It is unclear as to whether the same barriers exist for individuals who are seeking
couple therapy. This study examined the applicability of the Health Belief Model (HBM; Rosenstock, 1966), with the addition of demographic characteristics (gender, income, education, and religion) and contextualizing individual factors (relational
distress and perceived stigma), to predict an individual in a committed relationship's (N =158) motivation to seek
couple therapy. When controlling for demographic variables and contextualizing factors, the Health Belief Model factors of lower barriers and lower benefits were predictive of higher motivation to seek
couple therapy. Throughout all iterations of the model, lower income and lower relational
distress were also associated with higher rates of motivation to seek
couple therapy. This research indicates that barriers, including high levels of relational
distress, impact an individual's motivation to seek
couple therapy. Further investigation of the application of the HBM factors to mental health, including research into more systemic measurements of these factors, is needed. Future research should also identify other potentially contextualizing factors, as the overall model accounted for a relatively small amount of variation in the individual's motivation to seek
couple therapy.

▼ Sexual scripts—the definitions and expectations that individuals hold for sexual interactions—are thought to play an important role in the maintenance of sexual well-being. Sexual scripts can be rigid or flexible, and they can be concordant or discordant between members of a couple. Sex therapists support sexual script flexibility for maintaining sexual and relationship satisfaction when couples are navigating sexual issues. However, empirical research examining the role of sexual script flexibility and the degree of script concordance/discordance in couples’ sexual well-being has been limited, due in part to the limited measures available. Furthermore, within the existing research, there has been an unfortunate tendency to exclude individuals in same-gender relationships – perpetuating the long-standing knowledge gap in the literature on positive sexuality in diverse relationships. To address these gaps in the literature, we conducted a series of online studies that recruited individuals in diverse relationships. A measure of individual sexual script flexibility in response to sexual issues was developed (Chapter 2); in addition, the structure of an existing measure assessing couple sexual scripts in response to a sexual issue was evaluated (Chapter 3). Chapter 4 examined how individuals in diverse relationships compared on measures of individual sexual script flexibility and on couple sexual scripts. Findings suggest that there are more similarities than differences across diverse couples. Chapter 5 explored how flexibility in an individual’s approach to sexual issues relates to sexual well-being, specifically by assessing sexual communication and partner responses as mediators. Results suggest that individual sexual script flexibility relates to sexual well-being through reciprocal partner processes. Collectively, this research program suggests that more similarities than differences exist between individuals in same- and mixed-gender relationships, and that partners are important to consider in the relationship between individual sexual script flexibility and sexual well-being. These findings have implications for sex and couple therapy; these results emphasize the importance of interventions that target both members of the couple, and further our understanding of sexuality in same- and mixed-gender relationships.

▼ This study examined the relationship between race and mental health among Canadian adults. The purpose was to assess how social organization contributes to the racial distribution of mental health. The study defined mental health as a multi-dimensional construct that includes negative, positive, and subjective facets. The empirical analysis compared East Asians, South Asians, Blacks, Aboriginals, and mixed race persons to Whites on major depression, psychological
distress, psychological
well-
being, and self-rated mental health. Separate comparisons were made for women and men because the relationship between race and mental health could be conditional on gender. Using individual-level data from the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) 1.2 and aggregate data from the 2001 Canadian Census, the study hypothesized that racial differences in mental health could reflect differences in stress exposure, socioeconomic status, social embeddedness, and neighborhood environment. The main assumption was that higher stress exposure, economic hardship, social isolation, and neighborhood disadvantage could compromise the mental health of racial minorities. The study also examined whether social support and coping behaviors protected racial minorities from these health-damaging effects. The findings do not present a straightforward or a consistent set of conclusions. Although there is a good rational to believe that racial minorities should have worse mental health than Whites, this is not always or even mostly the case. Only Aboriginal women have a consistent disadvantage. For the most part, racial minorities have similar mental health as Whites, and even have an advantage in a few instances. Since the analysis covered the negative, positive, and subjective dimensions of mental health, it provides robust evidence to support this conclusion. However, the findings also demonstrate that low socioeconomic status and insufficient social resources can indeed have health-damaging effects. These factors explain some of the observed disadvantages in mental health that racial minorities experience or suppress an advantage among them.

▼ This thesis investigated the efficacy of an eight-week randomised waitlist controlled yoga intervention for middle-aged Australian women reporting chronic stress and psychological
distress (N = 116). The research included two primary components. The first was a process evaluation of the implementation and quality of a standardised yoga protocol in a chronically stressed female population. The second component involved three outcome evaluation studies conducted to explore the longitudinal effects of yoga practice on psychological mental health variables and physiological variables, including a pilot study that explored biochemical markers of stress (i.e., inflammation proteins and deoxyribonucleic acid [DNA] methylation).
Paper 1 reports on a process evaluation that includes discussion regarding the development of an eight week secular yoga intervention and the underpinning theory, evaluation of fidelity and quality of its implementation, and examination of causal mechanisms and contextual factors associated with clinically significant improvement in
distress (reported by 43% of women in the yoga intervention). These reported improvements in
distress were comparable to psychotherapy, and participation in yoga classes was associated with improved positive and negative affect. It was concluded that yoga intervention was feasible for treatment of
distress and was positively received by participants. Paper 2 presents an evaluation of psychophysiological indicators of health following completion of the yoga intervention. Compared to a control group, practicing yoga was found to be associated with increased positive affect, and decreased levels of
distress and stress. Additionally, decreased waist circumference and increased flexibility were demonstrated. These findings indicate that an eight-week yoga intervention is associated with psychological and physiological benefits that exceed those attributable to the effects of time. Paper 3 presents results of a longitudinal study that explored mental health variables at baseline, post-test and follow-up (one month) time-points. A strong effect of time was indicated as
distress was found to decrease in both the yoga and control group, although positive affect was only benefited in the yoga group. Improvements reported at post-test were not robustly seen at follow-up indicating the benefits did not persist without continued regular yoga practice. Paper 4 reports on a small pilot study (N = 28) that investigated the effect of yoga on biochemical variables associated with stress. Compared with the control group, women in the yoga group exhibited moderately higher levels of serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) and expressed less methylation in the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) region. Mental health variables were found to be moderately associated with C-reactive protein (CRP) and the methylation of IL-6 (region 1), CRP and LINE-1 (global methylation). Although the findings indicated some early methylation changes, the methodological constraints of the study only allow for preliminary insights…

▼ Background: Previous research has reported positive correlations between perfectionism, anxiety and depression within community adolescent samples. Psychological distress has the potential to develop into adulthood; therefore consideration is required about potential mechanisms that could positively impact on this trajectory. Self-compassion has been shown to be negatively associated with psychopathology and positively related to psychological well-being. It has also been found to be inversely related to maladaptive perfectionism (negative aspects of perfectionism) in adult populations. No previous studies have examined both constructs of perfectionism and self-compassion in an adolescent population and what impact they may have on psychological distress and well-being. Aims: This research had two aims: 1. Conduct a systematic literature review exploring the relationship between perfectionism and anxiety/stress in young people; 2. Establish empirically whether perfectionism and self-compassion have a role in the prediction of psychological distress and psychological well-being in an adolescent population. Method: For the first aim a systematic review of the literature was conducted to identify studies that explored the relationships between perfectionism and anxiety/stress in young people. Fourteen papers were identified which were subsequently subjected to methodological appraisal using quality criteria. To address the second aim an empirical study was conducted. It was a cross-sectional, quantitative design using self-report surveys, in an adolescent population (n=128; 64.1% female, mean age 16.24 years) across schools in Edinburgh. Results: The results of the systematic review suggested that there is a significant relationship between perfectionism and anxiety and/or stress in young people; however, some inconsistent results were found between the perfectionism subtypes and their impact on anxiety. Methodologically, the studies held good internal validity, but external validity was poor meaning that the ability to generalise findings beyond the remit of the studies was questionable. The results of the empirical study demonstrated a significant relationship between perfectionism and self-compassion and a subsequent relationship with psychological distress and psychological well-being in the adolescent population. An interaction effect between perfectionism and self-compassion was also established for some of the variables, with self-compassion playing a particularly significant role in this relationship. Conclusions: Overall, there is evidence to suggest a link between perfectionism and psychopathology in adolescents. The factors of perfectionism and self-compassion demonstrated a significant relationship, with both constructs having an impact on psychological well-being in particular. Self-compassion demonstrated a strong predictive relationship to both psychological distress and psychological well-being. The significant findings regarding self-compassion in particular suggest that it may be a potential strategy…

▼ Many lifestyle behaviors such as diet, exercise, and sleep are related to physical and mental health. However, very little research has been done on the day-to-day influence of these activities on both psychological
distress (PD) and more holistic conceptions of overall
well-
being. This study seeks to investigate the patterns of common lifestyle behaviors and their
relationships with daily PD and
well-
being. The central research questions are 1) what lifestyle behaviors are associated with PD and
well-
being, and 2) do the seven lifestyle behaviors predict the three outcome variables at different degrees of strength? Seventy-six adult participants were recruited online and completed daily diary surveys about their participation in a variety of lifestyle behaviors, PD symptoms, and
well-
being for up to 14 days. The data were analyzed using multilevel modeling to illuminate the day-to-day fluctuations in variables that cannot be explored in cross-sectional or large-interval longitudinal research. Examining multiple lifestyle behaviors simultaneously in these exploratory analyses allowed for a comparison of their relative impact on
distress and
well-
being, thus revealing those behaviors that have the greatest average association with PD and
well-
being. At the within-person level, time spent in social interaction was the most consistent predictor of PD and
well-
being. Consumption of fruits and vegetables and exercise also generally positively predicted
well-
being. Depending on the model, time spent outside, meditation and alcohol intake were also occasionally associated with the dependent variables. T-tests revealed some differences in the strengths of the associations and with social interaction
being a stronger positive predictor of
well-
being relative to other lifestyle behaviors. This project built on other early investigations into daily activities and
well-
being and the results may inform the development of future lifestyle interventions.

▼ Mindfulness has been found to improve psychological well-being. It has also been incorporated in many clinical interventions as an effective strategy against various psychological disorders. However, how mindfulness works is still unclear. Mindfulness emphasizes observing the present moments with fully awareness and non-reactivity, so it may change the way people remember things, especially for events containing strong emotional stimuli. It is possible that mindfulness reduces the bias towards negative memories, which is typically shown in depressed people. The current study investigated emotional memory as a potential pathway through which mindfulness training leads to improvement in psychological well-being as well as a decrease in psychological symptoms. Fifty-nine undergraduates were recruited for the study (69.5% female). Half of them were randomly selected to receive brief mindfulness training by listening to an audio guided mindfulness meditation tape, and the other half received music relaxation treatment. All of the participants viewed a set of pictures with positive, negative and neutral valences, and were given a recognition task. Participants who received mindfulness training had higher false alarm rates for positively valenced images, and higher false alarms for positive images were related to greater psychological well-being. The current study provided evidence that the effectiveness of mindfulness training could be explained by changes in emotional memory.

▼ The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of a six-week exercise program on university students’ mental health outcomes. The participants included 10 individuals enrolled at a Canadian university, representative of a range of educational programs (e.g., education, engineering, science) and varying year of study (first year to graduate studies). Using the Mental Health Inventory-38 (MHI-38) as a measure of Psychological

Distress at two time points resulting in a nonsignificant decrease in Psychological
Distress z(9) = -1.23, p >.05. Due to a small sample size, low statistical power may have decreased the chances of finding a true effect if in fact present. The length of the program (six weeks), subjective reporting of completion of additional physical activity and intensity, and the time frame in which the program took place may have been factors that lead to the nonsignificant findings. Future researchers should test the effects of longer exercise programs, with a bigger sample, and at varying periods within an academic schedule. Despite the nonsignificant improvements in students’ mental health, it is important to note that their health did not significantly decline over the course of the intervention.

▼ Previous studies about well-being have examined either
gratitude’s or social connectedness’ relationship to subjective
well-being. The aim of this randomized control trial was to examine
the efficacy of a gratitude-based writing micro-intervention in
enhancing felt social connectedness and well-being between young
adults and their parents. The trial tested the impact of engaging
in gratitude-based writing about family members or enhanced
caretakers on measures of social connectedness and well-being
between grown children and their parents. Data from a pool of
social work students in the Southwest (N=148) were used. Results
revealed within-subject effects and between subject effects for
psychological well-being from pretest to one month follow-up, with
the intervention group reporting significantly higher psychological
well-being than the control group. Results also revealed slight
mean differences from pretest to posttest for perceptions of family
relationships, with the intervention group reporting approaching
significant better perceptions of family relationships than the
control group at posttest. Findings from the study indicate that
engaging in gratitude-based writing about family can improve
perceptions of psychological well-being and may improve social
connectedness to family.

▼ Consumers have
relationships with other people, and they have
relationships with brands similar to the ones they have with other people. Yet, very little is known about how brand and interpersonal
relationships relate to one another. Even less is known about how they jointly affect consumer
well-
being. The goal of this research, therefore, is to examine how brand and interpersonal
relationships influence and are influenced by consumer
well-
being. Essay 1 uses both empirical methods and surveys from individuals and couples to investigate how consumer preferences in romantic couples, namely brand compatibility, influences life satisfaction. Using traditional statistical techniques and multilevel modeling, I find that the effect of brand compatibility, or the extent to which individuals have similar brand preferences, on life satisfaction depends upon power in the relationship. For high power partners, brand compatibility has no effect on life satisfaction. On the other hand, for low power partners, low brand compatibility is associated with decreased life satisfaction. I find that conflict mediates the link between brand compatibility and power on life satisfaction. In Essay 2 I again use empirical methods and surveys to investigate how resources, which can be considered a form of consumer
well-
being, influence brand and interpersonal relations. Although social connections have long been considered a fundamental human motivation and deemed necessary for
well-
being (Baumeister and Leary 1995), recent research has demonstrated that having greater resources is associated with weaker social connections. In the current research I posit that individuals with greater resources still have a need to connect and are using other sources for connection, namely brands. Across several studies I test and find support for my theory that resource level shifts the preference of social connection from people to brands. Specifically, I find that individuals with greater resources have stronger brand
relationships, as measured by self-brand connection, brand satisfaction, purchase intentions and willingness to pay with both existing brand
relationships and with new brands. This suggests that individuals with greater resources place more emphasis on these
relationships. Furthermore, I find that resource level influences the stated importance of brand and interpersonal
relationships, and that having or perceiving greater resources is associated with an increased preference to engage with brands over people. This research demonstrates that there are times when people prefer and seek out connections with brands over other people, and highlights the ways in which our brand and interpersonal
relationships influence one another.

▼ Organisations have been faced with significant survival challenges since the global recession in 2008. The global economy has shown glimpses of recovery since then. However, economic growth is showing a renewed decline in 2015. This has significant knock-on effects for organisations. For the mining industry, it leads to a decline in commodity prices. In contrast, labour, electricity and other operational costs have shown a steep increase. These effects challenge organisations to sustain performance levels whilst cutting costs at the same time.
Previous research has indicated that a high performance culture is beneficial towards performance outputs. This characteristic has made a high performance culture a preferred culture to cultivate in organisations. It is an organisational culture that places increased levels of strain on employees. The increased levels of strain may possibly impact the sustainability of performance levels. The higher levels of strain could possibly elevate the desire of individuals to leave the organisation, depending on how they experience the job demands.
This desire of individuals to leave the organisation is possibly also influenced by two other factors. Firstly, it may or may not be a preferred environment for specific individuals depending on their characteristics. Secondly, individuals may or may not be able to cope in the environment, depending on their well-being. Therefore, the objectives of the study were to determine the possible relationships between a high performance culture, person-environment fit, mental health and intention to leave.
The study was conducted in a mining organisation in the Gauteng area. A convenient sampling method was used to collect data from employees in different business units and ix

▼ Gaps remain in the evidence base guiding the design and evaluation of culturally appropriate humanitarian mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) refugee programmes. The study was embedded in a pilot MHPSS programme initiated by the UNHCR. The research is based on a case study amongst Iraqi refugees in urban Syria. Both the programme and the research were grounded on the tenets of the ADAPT model. The research combines three novel features: developing a culturally relevant measure of psychosocial
well-
being; using a pragmatic approach to applying the measure in a rapidly changing emergency setting; assessing case-management outcomes. The specific objectives of the programme of research were to: Identify expressions and idioms of
well-
being and
distress. Develop a culture-, context- and theory-guided psychosocial
well-
being and
distress measure. Apply the measure to assess outcomes of a case-management system. Use the findings to examine the utility and applicability of principles of the ADAPT model within this context. To set the stage for the empirical work, a systematic review of relevant literature was undertaken. The psychosocial
well-
being measure, PSWDAI, was developed and psychometrically tested through a three-step mixed-method development process. Four Iraqi refugee groups, three of whom participated in the MHPSS programme, completed a survey including the PSWDAI. The PSWDAI is the first psychosocial measure developed for Iraqi refugees, drawing on a universal theory (ADAPT) but grounding the process in culture and context. Exploratory factor analysis followed by confirmatory factor analysis on a separate sample produced a three-factor model: stability of social environment and survival; personal/psychological/emotional ability and coping; and social support, spirituality and inner peace. The third dimension was identified through additional qualitative research. Improvements in PSWDAI scores among programme participants showed the measure’s sensitivity to the effects of interventions, adding to its validity. The measure’s pragmatic utility was supported by the programme implementers’ capacity to apply it in the routine work of a busy humanitarian assistance programme. The study illustrates the feasibility and value of developing and applying a theoretically grounded, culturally appropriate measure of psychosocial
distress and
well-
being in parallel with the implementation of a comprehensive MHPSS programme.

The transition to primary school constitutes an event of a great impact on the construction of children’s Self-image. In this environment, children are confronted with new learning tasks, which should develop curiosity, interest, motivation, and confidence in their own abilities, with positive effects on their well-being. However, in the face of the teacher's demands, feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and refusal often arise. This can be particularly noticeable in the case of difficulty in learning, as learning how to read and write properly is one of the abilities on which children and their parents have greater expectations at the beginning of school. In such a challenging environment, children can develop resources that it is good to support. Based on these assumptions, three studies were conducted with the aim of: a) exploring the child's experience of well-being in a quali-quantitative way (study 1); b) identifying the factors that can affect the child's experience of well-being in the school context, through an integrated study of the characteristics of the child and his/her parents (study 2); c) implementing and evaluating a program to enhance literacy abilities and well-being of school-age children (study 3).

The research intends to explore and analyze nutrition from a pedagogical point of view, inspired by the universal exposition Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life, in close connection with the Encyclical Letter of Pope Francis, Laudato si'.
Pedagogical research offers a complex interpretation of the relationship between anthropological concepts and educational challenges to develop new networks of knowledge and action in the prospect of the common good and sustainability of life. Education, research and training are important tools to ensure equity and the recognition of the fundamental right to healthy, safe and sufficient nutrition for the entire humanity.
The main aim of the research is to identify the educational heritage of Expo 2015 in face of the food challenges of the planet through a systemic approach to social, cultural, economic and environmental issues. The thesis offers a critical review of peculiar contributions to food culture between tradition and innovation, to generate heuristic prospects for human development between past and future.
The need to educate “sustainable well-being” to promote quality of life and to disseminate best practices of nutrition in family, school and community on a local and global scale is emblematic. A “pedagogy of well-being” raises the challenge of identifying and "designing" food skills in an era of the “right to food”:…
