▼ In the years 1663-1665, the Danish King Frederick III (1609-1670) had the walls of his cabinet in Rosenborg Castle entirely covered by black lacquer panels by the Dutch artist François de Bray (c. 1642-c. 1672). This room later became known as the "Chinese Tower Room". This thesis discusses the design of the "Chinese Tower Room" by tracing its history since the time of King Christian IV (1577-1648), the first Danish monarch with an interest in Asian objects, and also in relation to the environment of lacquer workers in the Dutch Republic, from where many artists working at the Danish court originated.
Transculturation, the transformation of a culture by the influx of new cultural elements and the loss or alteration of existing ones, played an important role in the room's creation. It created a new symbolic cultural language that was used to reinforce the status of the monarch and the existing ideologies that legitimized his position.

▼ This thesis applies the concept of
transculturation to show how outside influences are transforming gendered relations and women’s roles in an indigenous community. Christianity, capitalism, androcentrism, and feminism have driven processes of acculturation, deculturation and neoculturation in the lives of indigenous Amungme people. Field research was conducted in 2015 among the indigenous Amungme, who live in the Mimika regency of Papua, Indonesia. Interviews were conducted with 60 participants including indigenous Amungme, Papuan feminist activists, church leaders, and government officials. The customary marriage system of indigenous Amungme community was changed by western missionaries who arrived in the highlands of Papua in the 1950s. When the Freeport mining company arrived in the 1970s further changes in gender relations took place. Traditionally, marriage was decided by family negotiations and a bride-price was paid by the groom’s family to the bride’s family. This tradition has gradually been lost in a process of deculturation. Marriage is now based on individual preference, husbands’ obligations are declining as desertion and divorce increasing. Polygamy has been reinvented in ways that leave many women in precarious situations. Indigenous Amungme women perceive these changes as strengthening patriarchal power so they act as feminist agents of
transculturation who critique androcentric norms and values. Capitalism offers opportunities for some indigenous Amungme women who adapt to modern dreamworlds through acculturation and engagements with the corporate workplace. In spite of their economic independence, these working women are considered subordinate when it comes to decision making in the household and the community. Interestingly, some indigenous Amungme women are doing the creative work of neoculturation to create a better future for coming generations of indigenous Amungme. They promote modern health practices to make community lives safer and healthier and promote economic
transculturation values by encouraging other indigenous Amungme women to sell their arts and crafts.

This research tries to prove that the poetic discourse developed in the novels by Peruvian author José María Arguedas can be considered as heterolingual, in that the Spanish language he uses is highly influenced by Quechua. The endeavour in this work is to study how it is possible to translate Arguedas's poetics while remaining faithful to the imprint left by Quechua on the Spanish language. The comparative analysis of the translations of the three novels, Yawar fiesta, Los ríos profundos and El zorro de arriba y el zorro de abajo, reveals the evolutionary process of the heterolingual poetic in José María Arguedas writings. This evolution presents a challenge to his translators who have been compelled to create a new “linguistic hospitality” in their working language.

▼ This thesis is an examination of the sociocultural ramifications of the migration / resettlement phenomenon. A rapidly increasing population sharing an affluently disparate world has contributed to an ever-increasing migrancy. A corollary of this migration, in an ethnically heterogeneous world, is that more people than ever find themselves living amid unfamiliar cultures. In consequence of this both settler and host communities are obliged to find modi vivendi with which to achieve harmonious coexistences. There appear to be three trajectories possible in such intercultural encounters: (1) the abandoning of ethnocultural lifeways by way of acculturation, (2) the reification of existing cultures, and (3) the exchanging of cultural values. To what degree individuals or groups are prepared to compromise their ethnic identities or cultural values in achieving modi vivendi is dependent on circumstance. Via an analysis of the sociocultural changes that have occurred in a specific Philippine zone of resettlement I demonstrate that integration into new societies is less fraught where mutual cultural exchange takes place.
In the course of the twentieth century the Philippines experienced a ten-fold increase in its population. The demographic imperative – coupled with the recognition by both colonial and independent administrations that an increase in land inventories was required to ensure food security, improve livelihoods, and ameliorate social unrest – created the conditions for the resettlement of millions of Filipinos to less populated regions. However, the Philippine’s polyethnicity dictated that this internal migration would have implications for intercultural accommodations, ones that state planners and bureaucrats had failed to anticipate. To comprehend the complex intercultural interactions that have taken place – and the requisite cultural compromises required in achieving modi vivendi – I have chosen the former state-sponsored resettlement scheme centred on Narra / Palawan1 as a representative model.
This thesis analyses the manner and degree of the sociocultural changes that have taken place in heterogeneous populations dislocated by Philippine rural resettlement programs – a process I term transmigration. For many, this internal, inter-island, inter-provincial, rural-to-rural population transfer experience has not proved socially onerous – integration into new societies has been unproblematic. I chose the Narra / Palawan resettlement zone to test the hypothesis that interethnic harmony is contingent upon the degree to which individuals and groups are prepared to adapt their lifeways by means of a mutual exchange of cultural particularities – a process I term transculturation. Not all resettlement in the Philippines – as the tribulations of the Mindanao resettlement zone attest – have gone unchallenged. It is the contrary outcomes in intercultural encounters, in both Mindanao and the wider migrancy world, that were at once the catalyst for this study and a means for understanding the potential possible in such…

(etc.]
The fond Jean-René Brutsch’s archives, based in Defap at Paris, inspired this study carried out on transculturation in Cameroonian missionary context. The analysis of this concept leads to cross and to renew views on diverse modalities and forms of religiosity, which generated from the meeting between local cultures and western proposal, thus the multiform creativity emanating from it. The foregoing hypothesis upholds that any undertaking bringing together different peoples and different modes of thought inevitably galvanizes cultural transactions where the different parties end up being inevitably transformed. The choice of studying this theme through the experience of Jean-René Brutsch, the missionary who constituted them during his various sojourn in Cameroon from 1946 to 1960, is made feasible by the richness and relevance of the content of these archives. Two main centers of interest emerge from the exploitation of Brutsch’s collections, namely, historiography and missiology. [etc.]

▼ Each stage of this research is an effort towards thinking about cultural identity as a milestone concerning the development of two national identities, avoiding traps and/or tricks presented by a regional history with little interest on external dynamics. This is an attempt to contribute with a contemporary discussion about African descendants participation in the process of such national identities, comparing Brazilian to Cuban situations under a post colonial theory view. We tried to compare, whenever possible, certain sets of both similarities and differences regarding Brazilian and Cuban ones, seldom presented in comparative perspective. Covering black festivities in Brazil and in Cuba, this study mainly focuses on Capitania de Goiás and the Eastern region, in the period from late 18th and 19th centuries. It reveals important elements- although not enough- for a comparison of the effects of the process of creation of black identity about the movement towards developing respective national identities.

▼ This research examines the manifold forms of support that shape and influence Post-9/11 Native American Student Veterans to enter, persist, and graduate from a mainstream institution of higher education. Moreover, it is a qualitative assessment that explores how Post-9/11 Native American Student Veterans navigate the collegiate environment and balance their military and indigenous identities within the context of higher education. Through the individual voices of five Post-9/11 Native American Student Veterans, the results of this study illustrate their decision-making processes, weighing of options, and reasons for sacrifice. Each individual had unique experiences, situations, and circumstances to consider before committing and transitioning into higher education. The confluences of situations and circumstances often determine the ability of Native American Student Veterans to engage, persist, and complete their academic endeavors; therefore, support systems are vital in helping them navigate and overcome obstacles. Respectfully, the experiences of Post-9/11 Native American Student Veterans have the power to influence future generations and to clarify their options when transitioning from a military environment to a university environment. Moreover, the findings from these experiences can inform mainstream universities and Student Veteran Centers to strategically respond and develop support systems specifically designed to recruit, retain, and graduate Post-9/11 Native American Student Veterans.

▼ Leo Brouwer is the most influential guitarist/composer of our time. This thesis will present an examination of his guitar music by exploring the simultaneous interaction of Afro-Cuban rhythms and musical gestures with contemporary (European
and related) art music. Through the application and fusion of these two styles in his guitar music, Brouwer creates original techniques and textures for the instrument. From an analytical or performance perspective, specific knowledge of this stylistic
and gestural synthesis is vital to understanding Brouwer’s musical expression and compositional process. For this study I will examine Danza característica (1957), El decameron negro (1981), Paisaje cubano con rumba (1985), and Rito de los orishas
(1993). Brouwers use of Afro-Cuban musical referents will be shown to fall into three non-exclusive categories: Specific derivation from Afro-Cuban forms and genres, general derivation from rhythms and gestures widely used in Afro-Cuban (and derived)
musical styles, and folkloric/historical derivation where Afro-Cuban sociological and religious elements serve as poetic or programmatic referents. By drawing on the works of numerous Cuban music scholars, I will document these Afro-Cuban genres and
musical traits, and demonstrate Brouwer’s methods of derivation and reference in his music for guitar.I will also demonstrate the incorporation of contemporary compositional procedures in Brouwer’s guitar music. To that end, post-tonal harmonic and
melodic analysis will give new insight on musical meaning and expression when combined with knowledge of Afro-Cuban forms, styles, and gestures. Additionally, I will present a technical performative analysis of specific original gestures that find their
derivation in the fusion of Afro-Cuban and avant-garde musical elements. Brouwer incorporates a dynamic interplay of right-hand articulation, left-hand slurring, position variety, and use of open strings to create original textures and musical effects.
Technical analysis will reveal Brouwer’s mastery of the guitar’s sonic variety, and the close association between instrumental articulation and the synthesis of musical style.

▼ In my dissertation I study the traditional rhetoric of
Mexican cultural history that interprets post-revolutionary
artistic manifestations as a “natural,” almost teleological outcome
of the Mexican Revolution. As with every historical narrative, this
revolutionary hegemonic discourse developed out of a “myth of
origin” which homologated the identity of the nation with the
ideology of the new state. As part of this process, the modernist
and avant-garde works of Julián Carrillo (1875-1965), Carlos Chávez
(1899-1978), and Manuel M. Ponce (1882-1948) were written into the
“official” discourse of the Mexican Revolution by adjusting them
(as imitation of European styles, and nationalist and
proto-nationalist musics respectively) to its ideological
requirements. I propose an alternative reading that recognizes the
complex social and cultural construction of that ideology and the
uncertainties created by this process. To study these events I
develop a model of identity construction that emphasizes agency and
choice as individual action within changing ideologies. Under this
paradigm, I analyze the artistic activities of Carrillo, Chávez,
and Ponce in the 1920s as the result of individual action
confronting power and struggling for hegemony, and consider their
musical styles as sites of individual ideological struggle. My work
re-enacts a double performative exercise. First, the composers’
self-representation and identification through musical style, and
second, the composer’s role in the construction and execution of a
hegemonic discourse that re-wrote them a posteriori, according to
the nationalist principles of the dominant regime. In my

The place and role of women in Caribbean societies have been the subject of numerous studies, in particular with the notion of "potomitan". However, in view of the presence of Amerindian peoples within the Caribbean territories, a study of the status of women in Kalinago and Garifuna was to be considered. It is a matter of focusing on Native American women through a contemporary socio-cultural study. Concepts such as hybridity, identity, power, or creolization are essential elements in the development of scientific arguments. Authors of postcolonial theory, feminism but also social psychoanalysis such as Bhabha, Glissant, Foucault, or Barriteau will be taken into account throughout the thesis. Thus, by adopting the premise that globalization and the regionalization of the Caribbean space have had an influence on the female figures of kalinago and garifuna, it is necessary to verify by means of a comparative sociological method of research both in the time and space, what were the modalities of implementation of the definition of a subversion of the Amerindian woman Caribbean in her social group. The general objective of the thesis is to show that the process of transculturation, Caribbean Amerindianity, initiates an emancipatory approach to the condition of Kalinago and Garifuna women, through the concepts of cultural citizenship and empowerment.

Repelled after Hernán Cortés’s interest, Acapulco was boosted again when Andrés de Urdaneta proposed it as the American port of the transpacific line tying up Asia and America. With the tornavuelta, Spain established itself in the heart of Far East, supported Philippines Islands from New Spain, and allowed the galleon to carry out the commercial exchanges Manila had with the Chinese, leading to the settling in Acapulco of the crown’s power and to the creation of a trade fair.Once a year, a Galion loaded with luxury oriental goods was to leave Manila and pick up the situado and the socorro in Acapulco. This so small village was transformed in an attractive source of prestige for all Hispanic America by the richness of the novelties which fulfilled their aspirations for recognition that Spain denied them.In the theatre of Acapulco, two mentalities were in conflict: Spain’s archaic mercantile policy, and the dynamic and modern Novohispanos behavior, issued from the economical restructuration coming from the decreasing of the native population. Strong gaps, amplified by a double Royal language led to smuggling, corruption and collusion of merchantmen with officials, ways that became necessary for the profitability of the lawful trade.During the XVII century, Acapulco was a spot of clashes, of synthesis, of influence from various worlds and their…

▼ Art History
This dissertation examines representations of Native peoples during the British Imperial Age of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It concentrates specifically on diplomatic Go-Between figures, individuals who performed a mediating role between their own indigenous communities and the colonizers. The dissertation examines images and objects within a postcolonial framework, engaging notions of hybridity and mimicry in order to interrogate more traditional readings of colonial power and representation. The images of Native peoples that appeared in ethnographic studies, paintings, and prints, as well as in objects of material culture such as games, books, and toys, reveal a dislocating indigenous agency within their colonial contexts. By offering new considerations of artistic process and the role of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century British theatrical culture, the dissertation suggests that these Native figures were mediated by the tropes and conventions of contemporary theater through pose, gesture, and other dramaturgical allusions. In its exploration of the theatrical dimensions of imperial diplomacy and Go-Between representation, including evidence of performative mimicry by Go-Betweens themselves, my dissertation reveals an even more subtle interplay of identities in the context of colonial image-making than art historians have hitherto recognized. In addition to using theater history and performance theory to situate Go-Between images in relation to the contemporary English stage, the study also implicates the creative process and resulting artifacts themselves in the Go-Between status, affording the material object itself a hybridity that can become the site of ideological dislocation.

Between bread and flour is a study of the Brazilian culture seen through the trip reports of foreigners that came to Brazil during the first half of the nineteenth century. The theme of our research is the way people nourished themselves, including the products, how and where they were prepared and consumed, the objects involved in this process and the behaviors at the table. Our studies were guided by the main elements of reflection in the works of Roger Chartier, Norbert Elias and Mary Louise Pratt, and their respective concepts of representation, civilizatory process and transculturation. The view of the Brazilian society held by foreigners and revealed in the reports is of European, or so-called civilized, superiority in intellectual and technological aspects, as well as in manners. On the other hand, the cultural differences and especially the variety of foodstuffs found here stimulated the curiosity of many travelers and of the Europeans who read their reports

In this study we analyze the impact of the migration of Caribbean black workers, who had moved to Cuba to work in the sugarcane plantations during the three first decades of the 20th century. In the aftermath of the independence from Spain (1898), Cuba was feed by American capital which invested in the country through the sugar industry reconstruction. The economic dependence of the biggest island of the Antilles to the USA calls into question the national bourgeois project based on racial issues which gave priority to the white man as the greatest expression of the ideal values for the progress of the Cuban nation. The entry of Black Caribbean immigrants rekindles the debate about the ideal immigrants who should to come into the country and sets the American companies against the Cuban bourgeoisie interests, creating a deadlock between the economic growth which was dependent of foreign capital and the maintenance of the Creole national project which excluded the Blacks. We have seen that the Carebbean workers migration at the same time that aroused and activated the racism of the Cuban bourgeoisie, it had favored the transculturation and the Black awareness through the relationship and the participation of the Cuban Worker with the incorporated manifestations and associations introduced in Cuba by Haitian, Jamaican and other immigrants of the Caribbean. These immigrants within the wage scale were the most exploited. However, they were participant and active, contributing with their culture…

After reading Meu querido canibal (My dear Cannibal) by Antonio Torres, this dissertation searches to map the colonial imaginary in the contemporary era by re-revisiting the history with a postcolonial view. The crystallization is broken by the metafictional paradox in order to allow the fitting of one more piece of the mosaic that forms the Brazilian cultural nation/ identity. The myth of nation, as founder of a community, generated a large number of possible and varied researches and inventions. Torres uses myths and shows the narrative of a colorless nation, to recognize in its identity the hybrid generated not only by the process of acculturation, but something more specific related to the process…

▼ During the Mexican colonial period, the configuration of worship services and Marian devotions in the mode of “novenas”, “sermones”, “patentes” and “oficios” strengthened the myth and veneration of the figure of the Virgin of Guadalupe. The models imposed by Eurocentric supremacy reveal a contradictory relationship that deserves further exploration in order to find and explain the connections between the iconography and religious domination mechanisms. As a result, the American space endures a process of
transculturation and iconographic palimpsest between models of Marian devotions in Europe and Marian devotions in terms of representation and conceptualization in the New World.
Following the establishment of Spanish colonization in Cuba within the cultural and religious sphere a phenomenon called
transculturation occurred which was termed as
transculturation by the ethnographer, anthropologist and Cuban ethnologist Fernando Ortiz. This term redefines the iconographic religious codes on the island because of the African slaves that were shipped to the Caribbean to work as laborers mainly in the sugar and tobacco plantations. These Africans brought their beliefs from their land, but were forced to embrace a completely different faith and to assume the Christian Catholic doctrine. Subsequently, these slaves camouflaged their own Yoruba deities with the Catholic calendar. Their pantheon was masked under Catholic images that the imposed religion provided, thus creating devotion to various saints and the representation of these in the manner of a palimpsest in their image and conceptualization. Some cases are exemplified by the worship to Our Lady of Charity, Our Lady of Regla and Our Lady of La Merced. The Virgin Mary in some of her invocations is overlapped and sincretized with the African deities such as Ochun, Yemayá and Obatalá.
Finally, this study analyzes the changes of cult and the use of images of the Virgin in the virtual platform. All the representations undoubtedly lead to a subversion of the image. This dissertation uses different frames works but the focus is on the main concept of “palimpsest” proposed by Sarah Dillon. The research line leads to the hybridism and the disquisitions about mythology and repetition of patterns in the formation of a nations narratives. With the transatlantic journey of the Virgin the palimpsest is formed in each medium or image in which it is represented. Each substrate of the performance or cult itself is subversive and contradicts the surface of the symbols.

▼ This qualitative study examines the lived experiences of American Indian men who have completed their doctoral degrees through the positive exploration of portraiture methodology. Semi-structured interviews are conducted with
subject-actors being asked to share stories from their earliest childhood memories and educational experiences through high school and through to completion of their doctoral degrees. Using narrative analysis and
transculturation theory as the framework,
subject-actors stories are examined to identify emergent themes of common experiences and characteristics. These create a composite portrait of a male American Indian student who persists to completion of their doctoral degree.

▼ Canadian society is a cultural mosaic composed of individuals from an expansive range of cultural backgrounds. Through the process of globalization and ever-increasing accessibility to new people and places we are constantly being exposed to other cultures. This practicum project proposes a new typology for cultural spaces – a transcultural center that functions as a contact zone where individuals can negotiate both spatial and social relationships. Such everyday negotiations within space enables individuals to better understand their own identity and the identities of those around them, giving them the opportunity to recognize and acknowledge cultural similarities and differences. The process of developing the transcultural centre was explored through theoretical and analytical investigations in cultural identity and interaction, phenomenology, and human geography that examined how these notions have the potential to inform an understanding of space and place, sensorial engagements, and the blurring of spatial and cultural boundaries.

▼ Current educational settings have been characterized as increasing diversity and demographic divides between teachers and students in all educational levels which result in some permeating alienation and multiple boundaries between teachers and students, schools and families. In this qualitative dissertation, my central concern was the preparedness and capacities of teacher educators of color and preservice teachers to transcend boundaries in educational and social settings. Under the theoretical considerations of a transformative worldview and critical theory, I examined when a Funds of Knowledge (FoK)-based home visits project was carried out, what happened in a school site situated in the Southwest of the United States, what happened to teacher educators of color who taught and organized this project and what happened to preservice teachers who conducted the Fok-based home visits respectively.
Findings include: (a) When a FoK-based home visits project was carried out in an elementary school, a Foucauldian web of power relations among multiple constituents emerged. These participants included one teacher educator, predominately White preservice teachers and their public-school mentor teachers who acted and reacted to one another based on their different understandings and interpretations of the relevance of this agenda in a public school. The power relations were multilayered, multifaceted, multidimensional and in constant flux which were also accompanied by ideological production of apparatuses of knowledge and the construction of subjects and subjectivities. (b) When two Asian international female Graduate Teaching Associates (GTAs) working as teacher educators were charged to teach and organize FoK-based home visits project, they were placed into contact zones where western progressive ideology of multicultural education, dominant racial, cultural, social and ideological discourse encountered their Asian-selves. The autoethnographic layered accounts they constructed suggested that they voluntarily and involuntarily implemented coping strategies which they coined as concealment, conformity, detachment, trapped, disillusionment, awakening, realignment, and distancing. They also traversed a
non-lineal
transculturation process that was coined as alienation-awakening-retreat-realignment-distancing. Findings suggest their strengths are endurance, adaptivity and persistence. (c) When three female preservice teachers with diverse backgrounds conducted FoK based-home visits, their (im)mobilities of minds, bodies and boundaries showcased their engagement with the families, which was to a certain degree reserved. They could take on non-controversial differences regarding language and cultural practices, but struggled to appreciate issues of race and class. In addition, they seemed to have reservations and some unresolved misgivings about furthering engagement with families in the surrounding communities as a future professional practice.
The analysis suggests that the transformation, or a capacity to…

▼ In this paper I examine an Argentine special-interest
magazine dedicated to imported, localized Japanese anime that
appeared on broadcast television in Latin America at the turn of
the century. In doing so, I focus primarily on the authorial role
of its editor, Leandro Oberto, and his role as gatekeeper of an
emergent subculture in post-dictatorial Argentina. The
entrepreneurial, political, and personal agendas of Oberto at this
time are demonstrated by samples of his own articles and letters
from the editor, as well as accompanying interviews from Argentine
news outlets. Selected letters to the editor are also featured in
order to reveal Oberto’s engagement with his readership. In order
to explore and explain these complex, mediated interactions and the
subculture in which they take place, I utilize established concepts
of
transculturation as coined by Fernando Ortiz. Emphasizing the
transactional component of
transculturation in a global
marketplace, I draw upon newer methodologies put forth by Elizabeth
Kath so as to better account for the profit-driven exchange of
culture and ideas that occur through media such as television and
the internet rather than face-to-face interactions. In doing so, I
demonstrate a previously unused application of
transculturation
which may also be modeled in comparable circumstances involving
other media within different localities. I also provide a
complement to the overall history of Argentine cinema as adeptly
described by Tamara Falicov, whose work denoting the cultural
divide between the middle class and working class as evidenced by
viewing habits proved insightful.

▼ Neste trabalho, analisamos a literatura produzida pela escritora egípcia Ahdaf Soueif nas obras The Map of Love (1999) e In the Eye of the Sun (1992).
In this work, we analyze the literature produced by the Egyptian writer Ahdaf Soueif in the works of The Map of Love (1999) and In the Eye of the Sun (1992). In both books the author creates in her narratives a journey story that allows her protagonist characters an exchange between East and West / West and East. Subalterns of their own experience, the characters seek the responses to the productions of meaning culturally experienced by the subjects of these
geographic poles reconfiguring, thus, their local histories and a hegemony of Western knowledge. The decolonization of thought judges the coloniality of power and criticism of the knowledge of European discourse. In rebuilding the paradigms the subaltern develops the liminal thinking, points around the varied meanings of meaning, theorizing about the impacts and the various meanings in the subject's life. This is what allows Soueif (2004) an elaboration of the concept "mezzaterra" (a common place). The characters undergo an embodiment of the senses, which Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht (2010) calls production of presence. The education of the leading characters allows - as well as a postcolonial colony to the outside - the recognition of the influence of imperialism and an action of the reactionary classes on the outside. Knowledge and experience, however, expose the proximity between the East and the West through the articulations between cultures, assimilations and reformulations: the
process of transculturation.

▼ This paper analyzes four short stories from Uruguayan writer Horacio Quiroga: Los mensú, A la deriva, Una bofetada e Los desterrados and four short stories from Brazilian writer Sergio Faraco: : A voz do coração, Noite de matar um homem, Guapear com frangos e Hombre, adopting the conception of border as a promiscuous place where the transgression is cultivated. The narratives are compared and related in the aspects in which the protagonists identities are constructed, especially in the relationship with their environments. When we discuss the question about the local identities and the borders in Latin America, we locate ourselves and establish our own positioning, also locating the other who is object of the discourse. To recognize the other implies recognizing oneself, and this process, since it is subject to constant transformations, involves to transit in the past and in the present, so the past can also be constructed and better understood. In order to do so, the way chosen is that in which the literary analysis dialogues with the historical contextualization of the spaces where the narratives are located, and also with the concept taken from Geography - of territorialization. To this concept we add the ideas of in-between place. and transculturation (respectively, according to Silviano Santiago and Ángel Rama), cardinals to a better understanding of Latin American literature. The comparison of the eight short-stories is started with the aspect of endurance, in which after the analysis we verified that is manifest in the authoritarian relationship of man against man, where the violence and the economic power are the vehicle of the ruling class oppression. The endurance is also the element that comes out in the conflict between man and nature at isolated and still wild territories, the environmental forces defeat the man and break his original harmony with the place. The ideal of the noble savage who lives in total equilibrium with his environment has no place at Quirogas and Faracos America. The nature, in this paper, is directly related to the inhuman realm, to the instincts opposed to the reason, to the expressions of violence not monopolized by the state, to the violence and brutality in its ancestral condition. So, either at the so called civilization or barbarity, the characters identity is formed in the confrontation and in the endurance (yet unfruitful) to the authoritarianism and to the environment. Finally, to think about borders means to bring out different ways of understanding life and different sensitivities. Through comparative analysis, it is possible to come upon different times and spaces and see how they dialogue, resemble and differ from each other. When we approached the short stories of Horacio Quiroga and Sergio Faraco, what was protruded was the condition of cultural and economic misery of the protagonists who, ignoring their condition, became victims of an authoritarian system which is not possible to challenge and, above all, from which is not possible to escape.
Adotando a concepção…

Our paper is structured in three parts : The concept of identity and narrative identity, The contact of cultures and the cultural identity, Becoming a French writer and we intend to answer the problem announced in the title, determining how a writer who was not born in France can reach the status of a french writer. We have analysed…

▼ This dissertation examines how modern literature in China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan in the late-nineteenth to the early-twentieth centuries was practiced within contexts of these countries' deeply interrelated literary traditions. Premodern East Asian literatures developed out of a millennia-long history of dynamic intra-regional cultural communication, particularly mediated by classical Chinese, the shared traditional literary language of the region. Despite this transnational history, modern East Asian literatures have thus far been examined predominantly as distinct national processes. Challenging this conventional approach, my dissertation focuses on the translational and intertextual relationships among literary works from China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, and argues that these countries' writers and critics, while transculturating modern Western aesthetics, actively engaged with the East Asian cultural tradition in heterogeneous ways in their creations of modern literature. I claim that this transnational tradition was fundamentally involved in the formation of national literary identities, and that it enabled East Asian literati to envision alternative forms of modern civilization beyond national particularity.
The dissertation is divided into three parts according to the region's changing linguistic conditions. Part I, "Proto-Nationalisms in Exile, 1880s-1910s," studies the Chinese literatus Liang Qichao's interrupted translation and adaptations of a Japanese political novel by the ex-samurai writer Shiba Shiro and the Korean translation and adaptations of Liang Qichao's political literature by the historian Sin Ch'aeho. While these writers created in transitional pre-vernacular styles directly deriving from classical Chinese, authors examined in Part II, "Modernism as Self-Criticism, 1900s-1930s," wrote in newly invented literary vernaculars. This part considers the critical essays and the modernist aesthetics of fiction by Lu Xun, Yi Kwangsu, and Natsume Soseki, founding figures of modern national literature in China, Korea, and Japan, respectively. Part III, "Transcolonial Resistances, 1930s-40s," addresses the wartime period, when the Japanese Empire exploited the regional civilizational tradition to fabricate the rhetoric of the legitimacy of its colonial rule. This part especially explores the semicolonial Chinese writer Zhou Zuoren, and the colonial Korean and Taiwanese writers Kim Saryang and Long Yingzong, who leveraged that same civilizational tradition and the critiques thereof, in order to deconstruct Japanese cultural imperialism outside of nationalist discourses.

▼ On the theoretical framework the contribution made by cultural studies, supporting us in the propositions of Bhabha (2003), Hall (2003), and Gilroy (2007), the current study issues questions around the construction of the sense of black identity and blackness within the Curricular Guidelines For the education of Ethnic and racial Relations.By this way, we try to capture , regarding to an expression of Michel Foucault, why there is an option for a certain notion of black identity of essentialist character and not another one , more open to hybrid and fluid constructions by the brazilian cultural and historical reality. From this approach , different historic moments of the struggle of the Black Social movement in Brazil are analysed , in order to demonstrate that the categories Black and blackness are crossed by different meanings, according to the conjuntural conditions within which render the clashes by positive affirmation of blacks in Brazil, as well as the articulations between the organizations of this social movement with the Pan-Africanist Movement as far as the current time, characterized by a new offensive from the North American cultural imperialism with reflections in the adoption, in the Brazilian context, racial policies from the point of view of the dichotomous black identity. When establishing a post structuralist and postcolonial criticism, relying on perceptions of Fry (2005), questioning so the mechanistic substituition of the ideals of the brazilian racial democracy by a polarized and racial view of cultural diversity in Brazil, with serious reflections on the construction of a national education policy for race relations.Accordingly, we conclude, with Silva (2014), by the necessity of construction of educational models based on overcoming the identitaries entrenchments , in a cross-cultural perspective, makers of dialogizing relations between the pedagogic subjects.

Holistically, this work argues for greater research into the ‘social’ aspects of Social Entrepreneurship (SE) and Social Innovation (SI) in theory and in practice. The academic field of applied anthropology is leveraged in an attempt to ameliorate the lacuna in existing literature, proffering a new approach to SE and SI.
