▼ A problem of limited resources at the International Switch existed and this led to congestion. Congestion occurred when the call load exceeded the capacity of available routes or trunks, or of common control equipment for example, call registers that temporarily store call data while the call is being processed. Congestion also occurred when the call load could not be handled in available real time. There were some identified calls drop rates of about 15% due to limited Bandwidth resources at the Switch and this posed challenges oflost revenue. Telecommunications system designers have studied the problem of system resource congestion for years. These same problems were evident at the switch where International Traffic got transited from all local operators to International operators. We discuss the results of the study done on forecasting the Telecommunication Traffic from Kenya local operators to the International destinations through a common gateway, the International Switch (IGW). The idea was to determine the volumes of traffic each operator transit through the International Switch and to pick the operator giving maximum revenue to the company and to optimize the resources available at the International Switch based on the outcome of the prediction scenarios. Success on data collection eventually led to the formulation of data cycles each cycle containing 7-days. The derived seasonal indices of the days in the cycle were found to be considerably applicable in the computations of the trend and seasonal forecasts. Forecasting was determined by developing a Linear Regression model and then fitting an observed dataset of four months (Jan-April) into the model with two independent variables namely duration and period being used as the key elements. Time series were used due to their intelligent nature of learning from additional data. An Artificial neural network forecasting model was also developed. The system could forecast the operator's traffic volumes based on the past historical trends and provide decision-making for the Carrier Connect team to implement. The research reveals that in making predictions regarding Telecommunication Traffic, a Prediction Model can be developed and be implemented whose objective is to predict traffic volumes. The results also reveal that the Linear Regression model shows better optimal results than the Neural Network system in the Forecasting of Telecommunication traffic

▼ Fatalities caused by road traffic accidents have become a major concern worldwide and road traffic accidents happen almost every day on Namibian national roads claiming lives of many road users. It is predicted that by 2030, road crash fatalities would be the fifth most frequent cause of death worldwide. Many efforts have been made to prevent loss of lives and to curb down the MVA expenses on compensations due to road traffic accident; however, road traffic fatalities are still on the increase. Therefore, reliable statistical analysis is required to understand the main determinants of road fatal accidents. The main objective of this study was to identify the best model in modelling Road Traffic Fatalities to establish factors contributing to the number of road traffic fatalities in Namibia.The study was a quantitative cross – sectional study using secondary data of road accidents collected on daily basis by National Road Safety Council (NRSC) for the whole country from January 2012 to December 2013. Descriptive statistics were used to profile background characteristics of the population. The study explored various count models to assess factors influencing road traffic fatalities in Namibia. Six models namely; Poisson, Negative Binomial, Zero- Inflated Poisson, Zero Inflated Negative Binomial, Hurdle Poisson, Hurdle Negative Binomial were explored and their performances were rated based on the AIC. The best model which was the Zero Inflated Negative Binomial (ZINB) was deployed for the estimation of parameters. Results showed that the region with highest number of road accidents from January 2012 to December 2013 with a frequency of (37 %) was Khomas region which is the region with the high population density and road traffic density. Therefore, intervention efforts should focus on more safety awareness campaigns in Khomas region. The ZINB has indicated that, the Road Traffic Fatalities in Namibia over a two calendar year under study were influenced by Khomas region; head on collision and side wipe collision.

▼ Flood disasters can penetrate every single aspect of human life and road transportation is no exception. However, flood impacts on road transportation is an area that has not been explored in detail in the past. The focus of this PhD study is on the performance assessment of a road network subject to flooding. In this work, several challenges were overcome with original ideas. The first was integrating the flood and the transport systems - both exhibiting strong temporal and spatial variations. This has been successfully achieved by implementing a novel methodology into a tool that modelled flood intensities output into a transport network constraint in a traffic model. The logic of the framework is intuitive - roads with shallow flood depth impose speed limitations, and roads with deep flood depth are closed for traffic. The developed tool enabled a quick and consistent technique to integrate the flood and the transport models in three different ways - static, semi-dynamic and dynamic. The static integration considers only one flood map to determine traffic conditions, whereas the semi-dynamic and the dynamic integrations use multiple maps to mimic the flood propagation in the traffic model. This thesis is the first to achieve semi-dynamic or dynamic integration of the two models. The second challenge was the assessment of the impacts. Intangible impacts such as travel delays propagating as knock-on effects can easily be misrepresented or even misunderstood. Employing a microscopic transport model allows for the assessment of direct effects and the knock-on consequences on individual drivers as well as the whole traffic system. Results in one case study suggest that the average travel time rose with 45% on average for 75% of the vehicles in the most affected hour of the simulation. The monetary value of traffic delays may not be as significant as the flood direct tangible damage, but flood impacts on road transportation may be more straightforward to alleviate if traffic authorities follow contingency plans to reduce traffic demand or mitigate potential interruptions of traffic supply. To analyse how potential interventions affect the transport system performance, three interventions were implemented into the model. The third challenge was the evaluation of the performance of a road transport system and the assessment of its resilience to flooding. Perusing this, a novel rationale to assess the resilience of a transport network has been developed. This method distinguishes reliability from resilience to define the nonlinear bounds of standard dry weather conditions, and any fluctuation beyond these bounds is defined as exceptional conditions. By separating reliability from resilience, the extent of both magnitude and duration is refined and contributes to better understanding of the system performance. ▼ With the development of self-driving technology, the day when autonomous vehicles share roads with traditional human-operated vehicles seems to be around the corner. This makes the safety evaluation of this so-called heterogeneous traffic particularly important. In this thesis, by conducting microscopic heterogeneous traffic simulation on the simulation platform SUMO, the impact of autonomous vehicles on traffic safety and efficiency is studied. In order to obtain more accurate results, the initial car-following model and lane-changing model in SUMO need to be modified and calibrated using real-world data before being implemented in the simulation. As some previous research have shown, the types of vehicles involved on driving situation have an impact on drivers’ driving behaviours. The neglect of this impact has led to errors when reproducing the realistic driving behaviour with the existing car-following and lane-changing models. In this thesis, the models are modified by setting appropriate value for some related parameters to reflect this impact. Then the models are calibrated using the data extracted from highD dataset. Three performance indicators, namely number of conflicts, number of lane-changing and a speed performance indicator,are proposed to rate the error in terms of car-following, lane-changing and safety aspect. After the calibration, the best set of parameter values is selected and used to represent those human-operated vehicles in the heterogeneous traffic simulation. As for the autonomous vehicles, both zero-error Intelligent Driver Model (IDM) and Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) model are used to present two different types of autonomous vehicles. After getting all the models needed, the heterogeneous traffic simulation is conducted in SUMO. Several indicators, such as time to collision and number of lane-changing, etc., are used to evaluate the safety and efficiency of traffic. The results are different when using different autonomous car models. For the zero-error IDM case, the results show that traffic safety and efficiency increase as the penetration rate of autonomous vehicles increases. For the CACC model, the traffic efficiency increases with the increase in the penetration rate, but the traffic safety deteriorates when the penetration rate is low, and it slowly improves only after the penetration rate is higher than 0.5. The simulation results help to understand the impact that autonomous vehicles will bring on heterogeneous traffic.

One of the main sources of greenhouse gasses is the vast and still expanding road transport sector. The number of vehicles utilizing freeways increases every day, with more and more traffic jams as a result. Lately, the development of smart traffic management systems seems to be a way out and these systems are used extensively. In this thesis, smart traffic management systems are used to control a freeway network in order to achieve an optimal flow, as well as a minimal amount of emitted gasses, and to protect target areas in the vicinity of freeways from dispersed gasses. Smart traffic management systems use control measures such as ramp metering and variable speed limits. To control these measures in an optimal way, model predictive control is found to be a suitable control method. In order to simulate the behavior of freeway traffic and traffic emissions, a model predictive control scheme uses traffic models. The METANET traffic flow model and the VT-macro traffic emission model are suitable models for control purposes in traffic networks, and therefore, these are used in this work. In order to predict the amount of pollutant gasses distributed in the area downwind of the freeway, a third model has to be used. Multiple authors have proposed so-called dispersion models, but none is yet suitable for on-line control of freeway networks. This is due to high computational costs, the inapplicability in constantly changing traffic networks, or deviating purposes of models. This work proposes a new dispersion model that is able to model the distribution of pollutant gasses in the vicinity of a freeway and which is applicable in real-time traffic control. The proposed model, the line source Gaussian puff model, is an extension of the existing Gaussian puff model. The Gaussian puff model is suitable for the modelling of point sources such as industrial stacks. In this work, the Gaussian puff model is modified to make it suitable for the dispersion modelling of freeway sections. This is done by implementing line sources instead of point sources. The proposed model has a small normalized error such as the validation data set generated by a CFD model, implying a good performance. Compared to alternative models used in freeway traffic control, the new model has a smaller error. The LSGP model is used in a case study to get an understanding of what level of pollutant gasses can be averted to disperse to target areas. In this case study, an MPC scheme is used to control a freeway. The aim is to find an optimal situation where the flow of the freeway is optimal, the total amount of emitted gasses is minimal, and the concentration level in the target area is reduced. The results show that the new model is able to minimize the amount of pollutant gasses nearby a freeway with a low computational complexity in a model predictive control scheme.

▼ Crash modification factors (CMFs) can be used to capture the safety effects of countermeasures and play significant roles in traffic safety management. The before-after study has been one of the most popular methods for developing CMFs. However, several drawbacks have limited its use for estimating high-quality CMFs. As an alternative, cross-sectional studies, specifically regression models, have been proposed and widely used for developing CMFs. However, the use of regression models for estimating CMFs has never been fully investigated. This study consequently sought to examine the conditions in which regression models could be used for such purpose. CMFs for several variables and their dependence were assumed and used for generating random crash counts. CMFs were derived from regression models using the simulated data for various scenarios. The CMFs were then compared with the assumed true values. The findings of this study are summarized as follows: (1) The CMFs derived from regression models should be unbiased when the premise of cross-sectional studies were met (i.e., all segments were similar, proper functional forms, variables were independent, enough sample size, etc.). (2) Functional forms played important roles in developing reliable CMFs. When improper forms for some variables were used, the CMFs for these variables were biased, and the quality of CMFs for other variables could also be affected. Meanwhile, this might produce biased estimates for other parameters. In addition, variable correlation and distribution might potentially influence the CMFs and parameter estimates when improper functional forms were used. (3) Regression models did suffer from the omitted-variable bias. If some factors having minor safety effects were omitted, the accuracy of estimated CMFs might still be acceptable. However, if some factors already known to have significant effects on crash risk were omitted, the estimated CMFs were generally unreliable. (4) When the influence on safety of considered variables were not independent, the CMFs produced from the commonly used regression models were biased. The bias was significantly correlated with the degree of their dependence. Traffic congestion on highways is a multi-sectoral phenomenon affecting society, the economy and the environment. It often takes place at specific locations such as on and off-ramps, weaving segments and intersections. The on-ramp merging procedure is considered as one of the main factors that causes traffic congestion on highways. The studies in literature show that the merging procedure can result in adverse traffic scenarios such as the buildup of the vehicles on the ramp which causes a downstream drop in capacity and subsequent blockage of upstream off-ramp traffic flow. Moreover, the on-ramp vehicles need to take the actions of leading and following mainlane vehicles into account during the merging process. On highly congested roads, this merging process becomes even more tedious and undesirable stop-and-go traffic behavior becomes unavoidable. Connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) that can provide safe gaps between vehicles along with identifying appropriate merging speed profiles have the potential to reduce traffic accidents and improve traffic efficiency. This thesis introduces a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) strategy for autonomous merging control based on a cost function that tracks the desired inter-vehicular gaps for on-ramp and mainlane vehicles, and thus intends to fully exploit the capacity of the road in order to maximize the traffic throughput. The proposed controller aims to optimize both acceleration and steering rate profiles of vehicles, and to guide on-ramp vehicles to merge efficiently, without frequent slowdown or wait for merging gaps at the end of the ramp along with minimal disruption to the mainlane traffic flow. The controller is evaluated under different initial conditions, ranging from low to high traffic conditions. The performance of the controller is compared to that of a baseline scenario, and the results show that the proposed controller increases travel times in the range of 2.46% and 4.17% for different traffic conditions, without disrupting the mainline traffic operation. Additionally, average speed of vehicles is improved in the range of 8.2% and 4.5% under different traffic conditions.

▼ To evaluate the traffic state over time and space, several models can be used. A typical model for estimating the state of the traffic for a stretch of road or a road network is the cell transmission model, which is a form of state space model. This kind of model typically needs to be calibrated since the different roads have different properties. This thesis will present a calibration framework for the velocity based cell transmission model, the CTM-v. The cell transmission model for velocity is a discrete time dynamical system that can model the evolution of the velocity field on highways. Such a model can be fused with an ensemble Kalman filter update algorithm for the purpose of velocity data assimilation. Indeed, enabling velocity data assimilation was the purpose for ever developing the model in the first place and it is an essential part of the Mobile Millennium research project. Therefore a systematic methodology for calibrating the cell transmission is needed. This thesis presents a framework for calibration of the velocity based cell transmission model that is combined with the ensemble Kalman filter. The framework consists of two separate methods, one is a statistical approach to calibration of the fundamental diagram. The other is a black box optimization method, a simplification of the complex method that can solve inequality constrained optimization problems with non-differentiable objective functions. Both of these methods are integrated with the existing system, yielding a calibration framework, in particular highways were stationary detectors are part of the infrastructure. The output produced by the above mentioned system is highly dependent on the values of its characterising parameters. Such parameters need to be calibrated so as to make the model a valid representation of reality. Model calibration and validation is a process of its own, most often tailored for the researchers models and purposes. The combination of the two methods are tested in a suit of experiments for two separate highway models of Interstates 880 and 15, CA which are evaluated against travel time and space mean speed estimates given by Bluetooth detectors with an error between 7.4 and 13.4 % for the validation time periods depending on the parameter set and model.

▼ The development of Autonomous vehicles has intensified during recent years, and autonomous vehicles is believed to be a common sight on public roads in the near future. It is safe to say that autonomous vehicles will revolutionize the transportation field in multiple ways, such as improved transportation comfort and improved traffic safety. The aim of this study is to investigate how autonomous vehicles will impact heterogeneous traffic in terms of traffic flow and safety. In the context of this study, heterogeneous traffic is defined as traffic situations with different vehicle types, both manually driven and autonomous. To investigate how autonomous vehicles impacts the flow and safety of heterogeneous traffic, simulation models of manually driven vehicles and autonomous vehicles was calibrated. The simulation models, which were calibrated based on a naturalistic data-set, represent cars and trucks which takes the preceding vehicle type under consideration. Simulations were executed in SUMO with various penetration rates of autonomous vehicles with the intention to analyze how the different penetration rates impact the heterogeneous traffic. The simulation results showed that the number of traffic conflicts tends to decrease as the penetration rate of autonomous vehicles increase for the same mean road speed. Also, the results showed that the mean road speed increase as the penetration rate of autonomous vehicles increase for the same vehicle flow rate. The difference in mean road speed for the different penetration rates increases as the vehicle flow rate gets bigger. This leads to the number of conflicts increase as the penetration rate increase when the vehicle flow rates are high. These results suggest the autonomous vehicles have the potential to improve the traffic safety by decreasing the number of conflicts and to improve the traffic flow by increasing the mean road speed and therefore lessen the travel time. However, the mean speed needs to be limited, or else the number of conflicts will significantly increase.

▼ Biological emergency response planning plays a critical role in protecting the public from possible devastating results of sudden disease outbreaks. These plans describe the distribution of medical countermeasures across a region using limited resources within a restricted time window. Thus, the ability to determine that such a plan will be feasible, i.e. successfully provide service to affected populations within the time limit, is crucial. Many of the current efforts to validate plans are in the form of live drills and training, but those may not test plan activation at the appropriate scale or with sufficient numbers of participants. Thus, this necessitates the use of computational resources to aid emergency managers and planners in developing and evaluating plans before they must be used. Current emergency response plan generation software packages such as RE-PLAN or RealOpt, provide rate-based validation analyses. However, these types of analysis may neglect details of real-world traffic dynamics. Therefore, this dissertation presents Validating Emergency Response Plan Execution Through Simulation (VERPETS), a novel, computational system for the agent-based simulation of biological emergency response plan activation. This system converts raw road network, population distribution, and emergency response plan data into a format suitable for simulation, and then performs these simulations using SUMO, or Simulations of Urban Mobility, to simulate realistic traffic dynamics. Additionally, high performance computing methodologies were utilized to decrease agent load on simulations and improve performance. Further strategies, such as use of agent scaling and a time limit on simulation execution, were also examined. Experimental results indicate that the time to plan completion, i.e. the time when all individuals of the population have received medication, determined by VERPETS aligned well with current alternate methodologies. It was determined that the dynamic of traffic congestion at the POD itself was one of the major factors affecting the completion time of the plan, and thus allowed for more rapid calculations of plan completion time. Thus, this system provides not only a novel methodology to validate emergency response plans, but also a validation of other current strategies of emergency response plan validation. ▼ With increasing urban populations (Boyd 2015), also comes higher land resource demands and more concentrated pollution levels. Increasing the efficiency of transportation systems is key to fostering sustainable urban development because it can decrease urban pollution levels, better meet the social demands of its residents, and decrease vehicle fuel consumption – encompassing the three pillars of sustainability: social, environment, and economic. This study aims to better understand the environmental impact of traffic light coordination and their timing policies in a randomly generated traffic network on an urban area. We focus on the effect of three different stoplight policies on emission and congestion. Transportation is a basic human need and an area of sustainable development with great potential. The United Nations states that achieving sustainable transportation is a key component in the development of sustainable cities across the world (United Nations 2016). The number of vehicles on the roads are increasing, as are their emission levels (Environmental Protection Agency 2017). In the United States alone, over 263 million vehicles were registered by 2015 (Bureau Of Transportation Statistics 2015). The coordination of stoplight timing has the potential to mitigate not only traffic-related congestion, but also traffic-related emissions. An acceleration following either a deceleration or a complete stop due to a red light that has turned green is responsible for significantly more carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions than cruising at a constant speed when approaching a green light (Ericsson 2001). Congestion decreases the fuel efficiency of all vehicle types on the road (Bigazzi, Clifton and Gregor 2014). With decreased fuel efficiency comes increased CO2 emissions (Barth et al. 2007). Stoplights are responsible for much of vehicles’ halts and changes in acceleration. Depending on the sequences of the traffic lights and the flow of traffic, the lights can both cause and relieve congestion, especially in large cities because of the high concentration of intersections with traffic lights. Just in New York City there were 12,460 recorded intersections that were stoplight-regulated (NYC DOT 2012), and out of the 3,360 intersections found in the Manhattan borough (Howe 2010), 2,820 of them are operated by traffic lights (NYC DOT 2012). In this study, three stoplight timing policies are assessed for their effect on vehicle emissions for random traffic scenarios on a given downtown area. Without loss of generality, vehicle emissions are assumed to be primarily caused by acceleration and deceleration. Traffic is modeled using a variation of a cell transition model to capture traffic as density-dependent flows (Daganzo 1995). To block any secondary effects in the system, all vehicles are assumed to have identical characteristics. This study assumes 100% penetration of vehicle autonomy, or in other words driver-less vehicles. ▼ The increment of extreme weather events is creating larger, and more frequent problems among infrastructure systems worldwide. In this thesis, the focus is on traffic networks by the analysis of a recent concept, the resilience. This concept evaluates the impact that perturbations create on traffic networks from the beginning of the perturbation until the total recovery. Due to the novelty of the concept in the Transport area, this thesis aims to develop new mathematical tools in order to quantify, and understand this concept in traffic networks. Following the previous objective, this thesis provides the reader with the following contributions: Literature review. A literature review about existing definitions, and methodologies to evaluate resilience in transport networks is presented, together with an analysis of the existing traffic assignment models, and travel cost functions. In addition, a literature review of methodologies for the identification of critical, and vulnerable links is included. A dynamic restricted equilibrium assignment model. A methodology to evaluate resilience in traffic networks is presented, based on a new dynamic restricted equilibrium assignment model, which evaluates not only the evolution of the cost level during the whole evolution of the perturbation, but also the stress suffered by the network users due to the changes in the travel conditions. In addition, formulations to evaluate the perturbation, and the recovery resilience are introduced. A bounded link travel cost function. A new link travel cost function which explicitly considers the effects of weather events in traffic networks is introduced, including not only a parameter to determine the intensity of the hazard, but also a parameter to include the local vulnerability of each link when the perturbation occurs. A mapping, and a bi-phase sensitivity analysis. A bi-phase sensitivity analysis of the parameters included in the proposed method to evaluate resilience, including local approach (OAT), and a global approach (Latin Hypercube) is presented. The statistical approach implemented allows its use in complex models by reducing the number of points needed for the analysis, with the consequent time saving. Methodologies to identify critical, and vulnerable links. Novel methodologies to identify, and rank the links of traffic networks by their vulnerability, and also by their criticality are presented. The methods are based in the analysis of the Fisher Information Matrix, and its eigenvalues and eigenvectors. In addition, this methodology is extended for the identification of vulnerable, and critical areas of a traffic network. Practical applications. The proposed methodologies are tested in examples, and real traffic networks in order to show their performance, and characteristics. ▼ The subject of this dissertation is the investigation of the environmental impact in relation to the traffic characteristics and the objective the development of speed-flow correlation models within interrupted traffic flow conditions for the dynamic assessment of air pollution. Speed-flow correlation models are developed based on empirical data from interrupted traffic flow conditions, a situation that is almost the norm of urban traffic. In addition, a traffic data collection methodology is developed, that has a dynamic character and is not locally limited. The main features of atmospheric pollution and its consequences are presented, while externalities on the transport sector and the impact of road traffic on the natural environment are analyzed, with emphasis on the production of pollutant emissions. In addition, the sustainable transport systems and the European reality are presented, reviewing the established European policies on transport, climate change and vehicle technology and fuel, while the relevant targets are set for the sustainability of transport systems by 2050. At the same time, the theoretical background of the research is developed, and traffic flow theory in particular. The traffic emissions calculation procedure is introduced underlining the importance of the relevant estimation models. At the same time, there is a detailed description of the European tool for calculating greenhouse gas emissions from road transport system, namely the COPERT4 software, which is also used in this dissertation. Moreover, the concept of traffic flow models based on correlations between the various traffic characteristics is presented: flow, speed and traffic density in addition to the relevant literature review. Furthermore, a methodology for traffic emissions estimation was developed, that has the character of a dynamic tool and can be used in real time to assess the atmospheric impact of road traffic within the urban environment. The correlation of traffic characteristics with the production of gaseous emissions in interrupted traffic flow conditions, and the creation of a dynamic application for calculating greenhouse gas emissions from traffic in real time was achieved. The methodology developed was applied in the study area, which was the city of Thessaloniki. The application area was defined, the local characteristics and traffic conditions were recorded and the road network was mapped and categorized according to its functional characteristics. Road segments were selected for the study and the collection and analysis procedures of the necessary data for the survey were defined, including the use of a taxi fleet to collect dynamic traffic data. This process led to the development of mathematical relationships between speed and traffic flow and through their assessment representative road segments for the entire road network were selected. The Aw-Rascle-Zhang (ARZ) model has become a favorable ``second order" macroscopic traffic model, which corrects several shortcomings of the Payne-Whitham (PW) model. The ARZ model possesses a family of flow rate versus density (FD) curves, rather than a single one as in the ``first order" Lighthill-Whitham-Richards (LWR) model. This is more realistic especially during congested traffic state, where the historic fundamental diagram data points are observed to be set-valued. However, the ARZ model also possesses some obvious shortcomings, e.g., it assumes multiple maximum traffic densities which should be a ``property" of road. Instead, we propose a Generalized ARZ (GARZ) model under the generic framework of ``second order" macroscopic models to overcome the drawbacks of the ARZ model. A systematic approach is presented to design generic ``second order" models from historic data, e.g., we construct a family of flow rate curves by fitting with data. Based on the GARZ model, we then propose a phase-transition-like model that allows the flow rate curves to coincide in the free flow regime. The resulting model is called Collapsed GARZ (CGARZ) model. The CGARZ model keeps the flavor of phase transition models in the sense that it assume a single FD function in the free-flow phase. However, one should note that there is no real phase transition in the CGARZ model. To investigate to which extent the new generic ``second order" models (GARZ, CGARZ) improve the prediction accuracy of macroscopic models, we perform a comparison of the proposed models with two types of LWR models and their ``second order" generalizations, given by the ARZ model, via a three-detector problem test. In this test framework, the initial and boundary conditions are derived from real traffic data. In terms of using historic traffic data, a statistical technique, the so-called kernel density estimation, is applied to obtain density and velocity distributions from trajectory data, and a cubic interpolation is employed to formulate boundary condition from single-loop sensor data. Moreover, a relaxation term is added to the momentum equation of selected ``second order" models to address further unrealistic aspects of homogeneous models. Using these inhomogeneous ``second order" models, we study which choices of the relaxation term &tau are realistic.

▼ The bottleneck of the maximum road volume in urban areas is the maximum capacity of the traffic flow on the intersection, which is coordinated with Traffic Light Controllers (TLCs). A promising method to decrease the number of stops are Green Light Optimal Speed Advice (GLOSA) systems. These systems will give a speed advice to arriving vehicles based on the schedule of TLCs, which needs to be known and fixed. However, most on-street controllers change their schedule until the last moment to maximize the performance. In this thesis a predictive controller is developed that is suitable for real-world application based on DIRECTOR; a state-of-the-art predictive controller. A prediction model is used to predict future arrivals based on available measurements to optimize and fix the schedule in advance. The proposed controller can enable GLOSA systems to improve performance. Appropriate pre-processing steps are implemented and the optimal input features are selected to improve the performance of a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network to predict future arrivals. All detection data is stationary over time by using the differenced series. The time data is divided into workdays and weekend days to create a binary input and undesirable jumps during midnight are removed. The combination of stop line detectors, queue detectors, arrival detectors and signal states of the controlled and preceding intersections as input maximized the performance. The prediction horizon of the proposed prediction model could be extended. The Normalized Root Mean Square Error (NRMSE) decreased with 17% compared to DIRECTOR. The proposed controller extends the control horizon and uses multiple prediction models to predict the arrivals for the entire control horizon. The proposed controller outperforms DIRECTOR with 14 - 38% reduction in terms of vehicle delay and 5 - 32% reduction in terms of numbers of stops based on the scheduling mode. The GLOSA system is an add-on of the controller and is able to operate without the GLOSA system. The control horizon of the proposed controller always has a fixed length which is needed to determine the time until green. The implemented GLOSA system will determine the optimal speed based on the time until green and the expected delay due to the surrounding vehicles. The proposed controller is a cloud controlled application. Therefore, it is possible to adjust the setup (i.e. scheduling modes) during the day. Enabling GLOSA all day except during rush hours will lead to 3 - 4% reduction in terms of vehicle delay and 29 - 32% reduction in terms of numbers of stops based on the scheduling mode. This setup of the proposed controller is also competitive with the hand-crafted non-predictive on-street controller. Compared with this controller, the proposed controller will reduce the number of stops with 26% at the cost of 16% increase in vehicle delay. ▼ The canals of Amsterdam represent a draw for tourists and add to the value of real estate along the canals. More than 40 percent of Amsterdam tourists take a trip through the canals, accounting for more than 3 million canal travelers annually. Therefore, the tour boat sector is crucial for tourism in Amsterdam. Many of the quay walls on Amsterdam’s canals have either reached the end of their lifespan or need replacing because of damage caused by overloading and the overuse of heavy supply trucks. Currently, a length of 200 km out of the total length of 300 km of quay walls have reached the end of their 100-year service life, and some walls have even passed that limit. In 2017, five incidents of quay-wall failure occurred. In 2018, three such incidents occurred. Hence, these quay walls are in critical need of replacement. Many are located along busy canals, which means that closing these canals will almost certainly directly lead to the congestion of traffic flow on the water. This is highly undesirable for the tourist sector. At the moment, there is no research being conducted into how to manage quay-wall renovations without disturbing transport over water. The main goal of this research project was to develop a first version of a model through which the impact of the quay wall renovations on transport over water (e.g., passenger transport and pleasure craft) can be assessed. Thus, the main research question for this project was as follows: "How can the impact on nautical traffic flow and congestion patterns of quay wall upgrade works in the canals of the City of Amsterdam be assessed?” A model was constructed based on the Amsterdam canal traffic analysis. An agent-based modeling framework was selected as a suitable framework, because it could give insight into not only if and when congestion occurs, but also why congestion occurs. The ABM framework is able to represent the distinct sailing speed and route selection of each vessel type, can reproduce the (routing) behavior of the three vessel types that interact, and had the additional option to incorporate the irrational behavior. Each vessel was modeled as an entity with its own logic (step-by-step instructions) and making its own decisions while moving on a graph. In order to reproduce observed traffic flow and congestion patterns, modeled vessel objects needed to move through this network, calculate their routes based on the network structure and properties, and queue at crossings. Therefore, this study applied network logic (graph theory) and queueing theory. This project used the open-source NetworkX package in Python to construct a network (graph) based on the spatial coordinates of the Amsterdam canal network, with nodes at crossings and bridges and edges connecting the nodes. Each vessel object in the model used algorithms from the NetworkX package to calculate its route on the network. The model also used the SimPy package to simulate queueing and crossing congestion at crossings with discrete time steps. ▼ Saskatchewan faces a serious problem with its traffic safety: there are more traffic-related injuries and fatalities in Saskatchewan than in other Canadian provinces. This issue is particularly problematic on rural roads, where young rural drivers are involved in a disproportionately high number of traffic-related fatalities. However, research has yet to determine what and how information is transmitted to young rural-raised drivers or how this information differs after moving to an urban centre. To address these gaps, the present research explores the cultural models of driving in Saskatchewan and how these models are transmitted to young drivers so that they develop either safe or unsafe driving mental models. A survey questionnaire of rural-raised university undergraduates who drive estimated their relative level of driving safety via driving styles, traffic risk perception, and attitudes toward driving. Following a case-based approach to qualitative research, subsequent interviews with seven survey participants permitted an in-depth understanding of which driving mental model components (both safe and unsafe) develop in these drivers and the modes and sources of communication through which this development occurs. Results describe several universalities and discrepancies among young rural-raised drivers’ perceptions of the cultural and individual mental models of driving. For example, rural driving is associated with reckless practices, low police presence, and underage driving, though safety benefits from minimal distractors (besides wildlife). Findings also indicate that, of all cultural model transmission modes, punishment and observation/modeling have the strongest impact on mental model development. Finally, of the sources of cultural model transmission examined, family and friends/peers appear to have the most significant influence on this group’s mental models of driving. Practical applications, limitations, and directions for future research of this exploratory study are also discussed.
