O aparecimento de ecrãs sensíveis ao toque levou a que se abrissem novos caminhos na interacção entre utilizadores e aplicações multimédia, tornando‐a mais intuitiva, através do movimento e controlo de elementos multimédia num interface apenas com os dedos. O aparecimento do multi‐touch, veio permitir a detecção de vários toques, aumentado o número de gestos possíveis, originando uma interacção mais rica e trazendo também a possibilidade de interacção multi‐utilizador. Na actualidade a interacção e tecnologia multi‐touch são uma área de pesquisa muito importante na Interacção Humano ‐ Computador e no Design de Interacção. Desde os meados do ano 2000, a tecnologia multi‐touch assistiu a um crescimento espectacular, com aplicações nos mais variados sistemas, desde telemóveis (Apple) a paredes em grande escala. Este projecto investiga a interacção e interfaces multi‐touch mediante o desenvolvimento duma instalação interactiva multi‐touch Guide…me Covilhã para um espaço público.

The emergence of touch screens, opened new ways for interaction between users and multimedia applications, making it more intuitive, through movement and control of multimedia elements in an interface, just using our fingers. The emergence of multitouch, has enabled the detection of various touches, increasing the number of possible gestures, creating a richer interaction and also bringing the possibility of multi‐user interaction. Nowadays, interaction and multi‐touch technology is a very important research area in Human ‐ Computer Interaction and Interaction Design. Since the mid 2000, the multi‐touch technology has seen spectacular growth, with applications in various systems, from mobile phones (Apple) to large‐scale walls. This project investigates the interaction and multi‐touch interfaces by developing a multi‐touch interactive installation Guide me ... Covilhã to a public space.

▼ Recent feminist scholarship has challenged the traditional Western notion of touch as an innocent form of engagement between individuals, with scholars such as Manning (2006), Marks (2002) and Sobchack (2004) focusing on the social, political, and historical context of touch, and how touch has the potential to challenge Western dualisms such as the distinction between self and other. However, despite focus on the transcorporeality of touch, that is, the ability of touch to traverse bodily boundaries and entangle bodies with the world, the theoretical engagement with challenges to the notion of human corporeal integrity through bioscientific developments such as organ transplants, and the interaction of biology and technology through the plasticity of the body in incorporating organic and inorganic matter, has remained limited. This thesis, situated in a new materialist framework, explores a posthuman phenomenology of touch by diffractively reading Merleau-Ponty’s ontology of the flesh and Karen Barad’s quantum-philosophy of touch through one another. Within Wilsons (2015) framework for a feminist reading of the biological body, and efforts from disability studies scholars to crip feminist science and technology studies, this thesis engages with recent developments in neuroprosthetics – prosthetics connected directly with the nervous system, restoring sensimotoric function in amputees or tetraplegic patients. Specifically, this thesis will look at research by the Bensmaia Lab at the University of Chicago on the neural coding of touch, and explore the material entanglements of neuroscientific touch through exploring the military connections as well as practices of animal testing of the Bensmaia Lab. I argue for a reading of a posthuman phenomenology of touch, to contribute to feminist theory on touch by taking bioscientific developments and their consequent human-machine interactions and entanglements into account. ▼ In this thesis the participation of tactile feedback from the hands in the control of balance was investigated. In Chapter 2, I characterized arm and leg reactions to unexpected perturbations delivered through the arms during walking. Perturbations applied at the hands resulted in early latency responses in arm muscles that were accompanied by activation of muscles in the leg when subjects were instructed to oppose the perturbations. Although no responses were observed in the arms when subjects were instructed to comply to the perturbations, most subjects presented responses in muscles of the leg. Activation of muscles in the legs were present during the comply condition even though the perturbations did not result in a balance disturbance. In Chapter 3, I investigated the effect of light touch sensory cues on the earliest postural reactions to balance disturbances during walking. The results of this study revealed that corrective responses in leg muscles to perturbations during walking are modulated by light touch. In particular, it was found that the effect of light touch on the corrective responses was more apparent when walking with the eyes closed compared to walking with the eyes open. Finally, in Chapters 4 and 5, I studied the effect of light touch on the gating of neural pathways transporting sensory information associated with the touch surface. The results of the study presented in Chapter 4 showed that segmental cutaneous afferent pathways are facilitated in the presence of touch if they transport sensory information from functionally relevant sensory cues (i.e. skin in contact with the surface). The results of the study presented in Chapter 5 showed that when tactile feedback associated with the touch surface is available interlimb sensorimotor pathways transporting sensory information from the skin in contact with the touch surface are facilitated. Altogether the results from this thesis revealed that sensory input from the hand can encode information describing the interaction between the body and the environment, hence plays a strong role in the control of balance.

▼ Critical studies of literature and the arts have long emphasized visual comparisons between the two-dimensional spaces of the page and the canvas, often to the exclusion of other senses, dimensions, and media. Tactual Poïesis develops an expanded vocabulary for how to read literature and the arts through attention to tactile, multi-dimensional innovations in the poetry of Susan Howe, Cecilia Vicuña, and Theresa Hak Kyung Cha. As contemporary poets continue to broaden the material, tactile dimensions of their writing, an equal expansion in critical discourse becomes necessary. For Howe, Vicuña, and Cha, ordinary textual conditions no longer satisfy-the poem must be seen, heard, and felt. At the heart of each poet s formal innovation is the potential for tactual poïesis: a rewriting of history and a reordering of the contemporary world through poetic and readerly processes that are, literally, hands-on. I argue that it is precisely a poem s tactility that makes its text, and the histories contained therein, actual, present, and physical-and therefore, subject to manipulation by both poet and reader. The histories these poets revise are numerous and far-ranging: from personal, familial narratives in Howe s The Midnight and Cha s Dictee, to cultural and national memories in Dictee and Vicuña s cloud-net, to linguistic and literary conventions in all three works together. My first chapter examines Howe s textual and visual collage in The Midnight as an elegiac performance, whereby the poet transforms the book into a costumed extension of her own body. This transformation animates the text from within and activates an intermediate space between the living and the dead. My second chapter argues that Vicuña s cloud-net relies on bodily contact between poet, reader, and text to open the "trans": a transitive space between the present and an earlier time prior to globalization, global warming, and species loss. From the "trans," the poet attempts to reclaim the forces of universal genesis and heal the destruction wrought since then. My third chapter argues that Cha s Dictee imagines the possibility of the material, tactile word as a means of concretizing history and exchanging the seeds of anti-colonial resistance from one body to another. The earliest measures of tactile spatial acuity reflect the ability of human observers to localize and discriminate the simplest of stimuli: single or double point (punctate) indentations. Because punctate stimuli cover an extremely small area, they typically only activate a few peripheral afferents at a time. Therefore, many researchers have used single-point localization and two-point discrimination thresholds to probe the density of innervation at different body sites. This thesis explores the relationship between peripheral properties and the spatial perception of tactile point stimuli. In chapter 2, we simulate the neural responses of primary afferents to single and double points, capturing many realistic properties of the periphery: innervation density, the shape and size of receptive fields, and interactions between two-point stimuli. Furthermore, we model optimal performance in localization and discrimination tasks given these afferent responses, and compare it to human performance. We find that human performance is well below optimal, suggesting that humans do not make use of all the information present at the level of the primary afferents. Nevertheless, many human performance trends, resulting from peripheral properties, are predicted by our computational analysis. Using empirical methods, in Chapter 3, we further investigate one of these trends: surround suppression (the suppression of two-point responses relative to that of a single point) is thought to provide a magnitude cue during two-point discrimination (2PD), resulting in elevated performance even at zero separation between two points. We demonstrate that human observers do indeed show elevated 2PD performance at zero separation on a variety of tested body-sites; an alternative task involving orientation discrimination, however, does not show this same trend and is therefore unlikely to be contaminated by the same magnitude cue. In Chapter 4 we review and test a Bayesian model of two-point trajectory estimation that replicates a famous perceptual length contraction illusion. We provide evidence in support of the model: stimuli that give rise to poor spatial acuity also give rise to a stronger length contraction illusion. Overall, the three studies covered in this thesis elucidate many of the peripheral and stimulus properties that shape our perception of tactile point stimuli.

This thesis details an in-depth investigation into the physiological and computational factors involved in the perception of tactile point stimuli. Touch is an often overlooked and under-appreciated sense, however its importance in daily functioning is unquestionable: touch feedback allows us to safely and efficiently interact with the environment, while fine touch allows us to detect and discriminate textures and patterns. The perception of point stimuli is a fundamental aspect of texture and pattern discrimination, with applications as broad as clinical testing and sensory substitution (i.e. Braille).

▼ In recent years, the mobile gaming industry has made rapid progress. Developers are now producing numerous mobile games with increasingly immersive graphics. However, these resource-hungry applications inevitably keep pushing well beyond the hardware limits of mobile devices. The limitations causes two main challenging issues for mobile game players. First, limited computational capabilities of smart devices are preventing rich multimedia applications from running smoothly. Second, the minuscule touchscreens impede the players from smoothly interacting with devices as they can do with PCs. This thesis aims to address the two issues. Specifically, we implement two systems, one for the application accelerations via offloading and the other for alternative interaction approach for mobile gaming. We identify and describe the the challenging issues when developing the systems and describe our corresponding solutions. Regarding the first system, it is well recognized the performance of GPUs on mobile devices is the bottleneck of rich multimedia mobile applications such as 3D games and virtual reality. Previous attempts to tackle the issue mainly mirgate GPU computation to servers residing in remote datacenters. However, the costly network delay is especially undesirable for highly-interactive multimedia applications since a crisp response time is critical for user experience. In this thesis, we propose GBooster, a system that accelerates GPU-intensive mobile applications by transparently offloading GPU tasks onto neighboring multimedia devices such as SmartTV and Gaming Consoles. Specifically, GBooster intercepts and redirects system graphics calls by utilizing the Dynamic Linker Hooking technique, which requires no modification of the apps and mobile systems. Besides, GBooster intelligently switches between the low-power Bluetooth and the high-bandwidth WiFi interface to reduce energy consumption of network transmissions. We implemented the GBooster on the Android system and evauluate its performance. The results demonstrate that GBooster can boost applications' frame rates by up to {85%}. In terms of power consumption, GBooster can achieve {70%} energy saving compared with local execution. Second, we investigate the potential of built-in mobile device sensors to provide an alternative interaction approach for mobile gaming. We propose UbiTouch, a novel system that extends smartphones with virtual touchpads on desktops using built-in smartphone sensors. It senses a user's finger movement with a proximity and ambient light sensor whose raw sensory data from underlying hardware are strongly dependent on the finger's locations. UbiTouch maps the raw data into the finger's positions by utilizing Curvilinear Component Analysis and improve tracking accuracy via a particle filter. We have evaluate our system in three scenarios with different lighting conditions by five users. The results show that UbiTouch achieves centimetre-level localization accuracy and poses no significant impact on the battery life. ▼ Cutaneous mechanoreceptors are responsible for our ability to distinguish between different touch modalities and experience the physical world around us. Mechanoreceptors are innervated by afferent mechanosensitive neurons that transduce mechanical stimuli into action potentials and terminate in specialized end organs. The Pacinian corpuscle (PC) has been studied more than any of our other mechanoreceptors due to its large size and ease of identification during dissection. The PC, which is found primarily within the dermis of glabrous skin, responds to low-amplitude, high-frequency vibrations in the 20-1000 Hz range. The PC functions as a bandpass filter to vibrations, an effect attributed to the structural and mechanical complexity of its end organ. The PC contains a central mechanosensitive nerve fiber (neurite) that is encapsulated by alternating layers of flat, epithelial-type cells (lamellae) and fluid. The overarching goal of this thesis was to unify the anatomical and electrophysiological observations of the PC via a detailed mechanistic model of PC response to mechanical stimulation, requiring a multiphysics, multiscale approach. First, we developed a multiscale finite-element mechanical model to simulate the equilibrium response of the PC to indentation while accounting for the layered, anisotropic structure of the PC and its deep location within the skin. Next, we developed a three-stage finite-element model of the PC’s mechanical and neural responses to a vibratory input that accounted for the lamellar mechanics and neurite electrochemistry. This mechano-neural model was able to simulate the PC’s band-pass filtration of vibratory stimuli and rapid adaptation to sustained mechanical stimuli. We then used this model to evaluate the relationship between the PC’s material and geometric parameters and its response to vibration and developed dimensionless expressions for the relationship between these parameters and peak frequency or bandwidth. We then embedded multiple mechano-neural PC models within a finite-element model of human skin to simulate the mechanical and neural behavior of a PC cluster in vivo. We then performed a literature search to compile the structural parameters of PCs from various species and used our mechano-neural model to simulate the frequency response across species. Finally, we isolated PCs from human cadaveric hands and performed micropipette aspiration experiments to determine an apparent Young’s modulus of the PC. The computational and experimental work performed in this thesis contribute to the understanding of the fundamental behavior of mechanoreceptors, which is a necessary first step towards the development of haptic feedback-enabled devices.

The topic of the present thesis is designing mobile applications, especially in the light of touch user interfaces. The aim of the thesis was to design a mobile version of the innovation tool called Ideanizer. The theoretical part of the thesis describes the design process of the tool and the challenges encountered during the development. ▼ The sense of touch is processed by the somatosensory system in which mechanoreceptors are the sensory neurons that translate mechanical stimuli into neural impulses by using specialized mechanoreceptive end organs. Pacinian corpuscles (PCs), located primarily in the hairless skin of the hands and feet, are the mechanoreceptor responsible for sensing low – amplitude, high – frequency vibrations (80-1000 Hz). In this thesis, I explored how vibrotactile perception is mediated by the PCs using a combination of computational modeling, benchtop experiments on donor tissue, and psychophysical tests. There are several mechanical models of the PC, and the first part of this thesis demonstrated that a multiphysics model of a single PC contained enough details to recapitulate the trend of observed discriminability of human subjects. We showed that discriminability of sinusoidal vibrations increases as the frequency difference between the pairs increase, and we found that complex waveforms with two frequency components were more difficult to discriminate and did not follow a discernible trend. Next, we investigated the effect that Dupuytren disease (DD) has on vibrotactile perception at frequencies within the PC's range. Dupuytren disease is a progressive hand disorder in which growth and densitification of fibrous tissue in the palms eventually causes the affected fingers to bend irreversibly. DD usually presents clinically after the age of 50, affects about 3 per 10,000 adults, and is associated with alterations to the size and the internal structure of PCs. By measuring vibrotactile sensitivity in healthy and DD subjects, we found that women are more sensitive to high – frequency vibrations than men and that men with DD may exhibit reduced sensitivity compared to men without DD. We also found that, for patients in which DD presents unilaterally, the finger with DD is less sensitive than the corresponding finger on the unaffected hand. These data may serve as a useful reference to future DD researchers and may facilitate development of novel diagnostic or prognostic protocols. Finally, we designed a system to measure the viscoelastic properties of the PC and tested isolated human cadaveric PCs from donors with and without DD to better understand how the mechanoreceptor's viscoelastic properties affect vibrotactile perception.

▼ Affective, interpersonal touch is important for forming and maintaining social bonds. In the hairy skin of humans there is a specific type of nerve fibers called C-tactile (CT) afferents which are optimally activated by a light stroking of the skin, like a caress. These afferents have been suggested to be involved in the detection and relaying of affective touch. In the current thesis stroking touch stimulation, targeting the CT afferents, is used in three papers investigating different aspects of touch processing and touch perception. In paper I slow (affective) and fast (non-affective) stroking was applied to the forearm of two month old infants while the cortical response was measured using diffuse optical tomography. Analysis of the hemodynamic response of the cortex following slow compared to fast stroking revealed activations in the temporal and insular cortices. These results are coherent with activations previously shown in adults and indicate that the human brain already in early postnatal life can distinguish between affective and non-affective touch. In paper II and III the perception of stroking touch stimulation was tested in healthy adult subjects. The participants were stroked on the forearm and the inner thigh and asked to rate the pleasantness, eroticism and intensity of the stimulation. Paper II revealed no difference in ratings of stroking on the forearm or the thigh. However, for the first time it was shown that the ratings of eroticism follow the same pattern as previously has been reported for pleasantness ratings, and for the firing frequency of CT afferents. This may indicate involvement of CT afferents also in erotic touch perception. Furthermore, the ratings of eroticism decreased as a function of the duration of the romatic relationship. In paper III a skin sample was obtained together with the ratings of touch perception. In the skin sample the number of hair follicles were counted in order to test the hypothesis that CT afferents are connected to hair follicles, and that the density of hair follicles could have effects on the perception of touch. In this paper, the large sample sizes also allowed assessment of gender differences. Indeed, the results revealed gender differences both in ratings of touch perception and in hair follicle density, where women rated touch as more pleasant and had higher hair follicle densities. The gender difference in hair follicle density was however abolished when controlling for body size. No conclusive evidence for a correlation between hair follicle density and affective touch perception was found. This thesis adds further knowledge to the growing field of affective touch. Specifically, it adds knowledge on how touch is processed in infancy, and how it is perceived in adulthood. It further also highlights some gender differences in how stroking touch is experienced.
