▼ The perception of not having enough time to do all of the things one needs to get done appears to be on the rise across industrialized nations. In Canada, for example, 16.4% of the population reported high levels of pressure in 1992, compared with 19.7% in 2005. Understanding the factors associated with perceived time pressure is important for public health, particularly given research suggesting that perceptions of time pressure are increasing in Western society and that such perceptions are linked with social and mental well-being. The overall goal of this study was to better understand the patterning of perceived time pressure among working mothers and fathers in Canada according to whether they occupied the additional role of partner and/or caregiver, as well as according to characteristics associated with their paid work and family roles. The Gender, Work, and Family Health Survey, conducted in Saskatoon Canada in 2005 provided the data for this study. The total sample was 1160 (674 women and 486 men). Results of the multiple linear regression analyses showed that both role occupancy and role quality were related to perceived time pressure among employed parents but that the precise nature of these relationships depends on gender. For mothers, the following factors were associated with increased time pressure: occupancy of an unpaid caregiving role, parenting a child with at least one health/behavioral problem, agreement with the statements "parenting makes me feel drained or exhausted" or "parenting makes me feel tense and anxious", and low perceived social support. Regarding the paid work environment, women who were categorized as high strain (ie., high demands/low control) or active (high demands/high control) also reported higher levels of time pressure. For fathers, the following variables were associated with greater time pressure: occupancy of the partner role, being a multiple job holder and having a high strain (ie., high demands/low control) or active (high demands/high control) psychosocial work environment. ▼ Professional skepticism is a critical component of audit practice and current auditing standards direct auditors to remain skeptical throughout the duration of each audit engagement. Despite the importance and prevalence of an emphasis on professional skepticism throughout auditing standards, evidence indicates that auditors often fail to exercise an appropriate degree of professional skepticism. Prior accounting research suggests that auditors’ professionally skeptical behavior is affected by individual personality traits as well as situational (state) influences, whereby both factors contribute to auditor professional skepticism. Yet, prior research has primarily focused on trait skepticism; and little research to date has investigated the concept of state skepticism. The purpose if this research study is to experimentally investigate the impact of time pressure and trait skepticism on state skepticism, and to test a potential debiasing procedure on the impact of time pressure on state skepticism. In addition, this study examines the influence of both skepticism types on skeptical behavior.This research offers several contributions to accounting literature and practice. First, I contribute to the existing debate regarding the influences of professional skepticism by providing evidence that professional skepticism may be categorized as a temporary state, induced by situational aspects, in addition to being classified as an enduring trait. Second, I identify certain situational conditions which create differences in the level of state professional skepticism exhibited within an auditing context. Lastly, my findings may also be important to audit firms as they consider tools within their training arsenal equipped to promote an appropriate level of professional skepticism among employees. If auditor skepticism can be influenced by the frames they are provided, then audit firms may create an environment that promotes consistency in auditors’ application of professional skepticism, simply by engaging in goal framing. Aim and scientific issues The aim was to identify potential health risks, for full-time working parents with small children, caused by time shortage. The intention was to better understand and help this particularly time-pressured group in society to achieve a healthier lifestyle. The identification was built upon their own opinions about possible health risks and upon an interpretation of the health risks from a health promoter’s perspective. How do full-time working parents with young children handle time-shortage in a health perspective, specified in the categories: sleep, recovery, nutrition, physical activity, social health and mental health?What consequences for health does time–shortage have for full-time working parents with young children?What do parents with young children think could help them to obtain a better health in everyday life? Method The study was based on a literature overview and semi-structured interviews with 6 people who were strategically selected: the interview objects were all full-time working or studying, had one child under 7 and lived together with a partner. All interviews were recorded using two dictaphones and were implemented, transcribed and analyzed by both writers of this essay to increase the reliability of the results. Results Time shortage is shown to be handled especially through priorities in the respondent’s lives. Depending on individual preferences, knowledge and lifestyle the interview objects give up different activities. Common for all respondents was that they gave up activities necessary for their health in the long term. The consequences of time shortage for their health therefore depended on what kind of activity they gave up. It is clear that time-shortage signifies an increased risk for lifestyle diseases in the long term. The parents’ own suggestions for improvements included household services, economic help, social networks, a more flexible working market and a more flexible society. Conclusions Time shortage is a problem for parents with small children and the consequences of it are that crucial activities for promoting a long-term good health are given up. Input from the community is needed and the health educator can be a part in the work of teaching parents –to-be about lifestyle changes that could occur. Based on the results of this study, different methods can be used for the solution of specific problems in different families.

▼ When horizontal wells are completed many changes can occur. During completions, pressure changes take place because of the fluid and proppant injected. One way of monitoring such changes is through the use of time-lapse seismic data. In Wattenberg Field, located near Greeley, Colorado, Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (APC) has teamed up with the Colorado School of Mines Reservoir Characterization Project (RCP) to acquire time-lapse seismic data over a section of land in which eleven horizontal wells were completed. The P-wave seismic is of considerable interest since the P-waves are sensitive to pressure changes in the reservoir. However, the first step is to determine if there are considerable pressure changes associated with the completions. The net pressures from the completion reports per stage were studied. The net pressure indicates the creation of hydraulic fractures and the propagation of those fractures. This thesis hypothesizes that where there is a positive net pressure, the pressure is building up near the wellbore and a negative net pressure indicates hydraulic fracture propagation. A pre-stack seismic inversion was done to determine the P-impedance changes in the time-lapse surveys. The percent difference in P-impedance volume was observed with the net pressure trend in corresponding reservoir intervals. This analysis showed that the negative changes in P-impedance correlate with the negative net pressure. This analysis implies that the formation is being hydraulically fractured and the fractures are propagating away from the wellbore, so the net pressure is decreasing resulting in the decrease in P-impedance. The results of this study allows for integration between the completion parameters and the time-lapse seismic analysis. This study then provides insight for the stimulated reservoir volume, since the seismic anomalies in combination with the completion pressures can identify areas that were fractured better than others. Tidigare forskning visar att många akademiker upplever hög arbetsbelastning och påtaglig tidspress på arbetsplatsen. Det kan leda till en konflikt mellan arbete och fritid. Tidspress och välmående är aktuella ämnen, vilket dagspressen styrker. Tidigare forskning upplever dessutom en kunskapslucka vad gäller forskning om obalans mellan arbete och fritid, samt vilket effekt det får på individens välmående. Studiens syfte är således att utforska hur redovisningskonsulten upplever tidspress utifrån ett välmåendeperspektiv. För att besvara syftet har en kvalitativ studie genomförts. Tidspress utforskas från tre håll: tidsdeadlinepress, tidsbudgetpress och arbetsbelastning. I begreppet välmående inkluderas life satisfaction, job satisfaction och work life balance. Studien bygger på empiri från åtta redovisningskonsulter aktiva på redovisningsbyråer i södra Sverige. Empiriinsamling har skett genom en metodtriangulering bestående av intervjuer, observationer och dokumentär forskning, detta för att öka studiens tillförlitlighet. Studiens resultat visar att uppkomsten av tidspress i redovisningsbranschen bland annat beror på dokumentationskrav, avbrott i arbetet och kundens förväntningar. Trots tidspress och ojämn arbetsbelastning trivs redovisningskonsulten med sitt arbete. Dock uppstår situationer där tidspressen tar överhanden, vilket resulterar i negativa konsekvenser för redovisningskonsultens välmående. Omfattningen av tidspress och arbetsbelastning redovisningskonsulten känner sig bekväm med kan hänföras till individens personliga egenskaper. Slutsatsen visar att redovisningskonsultens personliga egenskaper är avgörande för hur tidspress upplevs. Om tidspressen tar överhanden, vilket är individuellt och beror på personliga egenskaper, återspeglas det genast genom obalans mellan arbete och fritid, vilket resulterar i minskat välmående hos redovisningskonsulten.

Previous research shows that many academics experience a high level of workload and time pressure at work, which could lead to a work life conflict. Time pressure and well-being are current topics, which is evidenced in the daily press. Previous research indicates a knowledge gap regarding research about work life balance, and its effect on the well-being of individuals. Thus, the purpose of this study is to explore how accountants experience time pressure, from a well-being perspective. In order to fullfil the purpose of the study, a qualitative method was chosen. Time pressure has been explored from three perspectives: time deadline pressure, time budget pressure, and workload. The term well-being includes life satisfaction, job satisfaction, and work life balance. This study is based on empirical material gathered from eight accountants settled in southern Sweden. ▼ Since maintaining normal tire inflation would dramatically reduce the tire maintenance cost, which is the largest one for fleets, many researchers have invested in means of monitoring and controlling tire inflation. One of the systems is Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) which usually has the functionalities of storing the temperature and pressure data and setting up an alarm when either type of data achieves a preset threshold. This system achieves a simple condition based monitoring (CBM) by monitoring the pressure on a real-time basis. However, all tires work under dynamic operating conditions causing pressure data to fluctuate with operating conditions in a big range, so the single pressure threshold faces a tradeoff between low sensitivity and high false alarm rate. To conquer this dilemma and achieve a higher-level CBM, either a dynamic threshold or a true tire condition extracted from its superficial operating condition is needed. In this research, prognostic health management (PHM) techniques were employed to develop a systematic real-time methodology for tire health assessment and prediction. The proposed methodology could extract the current real tire condition out of its operating condition and predict its future trend based on the historical tire condition. The raw TPMS data which includes pressure and temperature was taken as the input to the model. The ideal gas law was applied on the data to reduce the temperature effect in pressure on all the tires. Then health assessment which includes individual tire self-comparison and peer based comparison was conducted. Three models (Logistic Regression (LR), Self-Organizing Map – Mean Quantization Error (SOM-MQE), Distance Based Assessment (DBA)) were employed and compared during self-tire comparison to eliminate the data variance between tires from different positions; and peer based comparison was applied to eliminate the fluctuation within each tire. Meanwhile another anomaly detection algorithm was developed to identify system changes (tire inflation, tire fixation), after which health assessment models are retrained to obtain robust outputs from health assessment models. When an initial drop was seen from the current tire health, a prediction would be triggered to infer the future health trend. Different prediction algorithms were compared in this step and no single model was accurate enough. Thus a model fusion was employed to combine single prediction models together to achieved better prediction results. Real fleet TPMS data was used in the case study to validate the proposed methodology. Two conclusions were drawn: 1. The proposed research methodology is able to evaluate the actual tire health condition on a real-time basis. 2. The tire health generated from this model was improved greatly over the outputs from previous methodologies; and the improvement could be seen from both shortened leakage detection time and higher prediction accuracy. ▼ The IRGC developed a framework in which it is argued that risks can be categorized according to simple, complex, uncertain and ambiguous risks in the assessment process (Renn 2005). Each risk category comes with a specific risk governance approach, including a differing level of stakeholder participation (thereby taking into account the societal context in which a risk occurs, and the principles of good governance). Although this proposed framework is not empirically tested yet, its aim is (among other things) fostering more effective, efficient and accepted risk governance. Dutch infectious disease governance seemed to be a good field to test the IRGC-framework because of the increasing belief that risk governance should comprise more than standard risk calculations (RIVM 2003). Furthermore, recent national and international outbreaks (SARS, Influenza A, Q-fever, EHEC) have emphasized the fact that infectious diseases remain a serious risk. Complexity and uncertainty with regard to infectious diseases seem to have increased (due to climatological changes, intensified food production, globalization etc.) and ambiguity with regard to the size or severity of a risk can be a serious issue for infectious disease governance (e.g. Q-fever, Mexican flu, HPV). However, time pressure involved in infectious disease governance is an issue. Therefore, the main research question of this thesis is: To what extent is the IRGC-framework useful for Dutch infectious disease control and if applied, what is the added value in terms of effectiveness, efficiency and acceptance? A qualitative case study analysis was chosen as a means to answer this question. Desk research to two recent infectious disease risks (Q-fever and Schmallenberg Virus) had to reveal absent IRGC-framework steps in the actual risk governance process and served as a means to get an indication of actual effectiveness, efficiency and acceptance. The results of desk research served as a basis for interviews with stakeholders (n=18), who were asked for the feasibility and added value if absent IRGC-steps would have been applied. This study revealed that both Q-fever and SBV showed partial resemblance with the suggested IRGC-approach; some (partly) missing IRGC-ideas could foster the success of Dutch infectious disease governance. The feasibility of appliance of IRGC-elements under time pressure was often questioned, which suggests that urgency adds an extra dimension to risk governance. ▼ This study explores the potential of VSP data in reservoir studies and particularly in separating the effects of CO2 pore pressure and saturation after fluid injection into the reservoir. It helps establishing robust and reliable links between physical properties of hydrocarbon reservoirs and seismic data. It also reduces the uncertainties of the AVA analysis through constructing a detailed model of first-arrival amplitude decay combining geometric spreading, scattering, and inelastic dissipation. The inversion of seismic data reveals anisotropic variations of geometric attenuation (wavefront curvatures and scattering, denoted ) and the effective attenuation parameter () with depth. Statistical analysis of model uncertainties quantitatively measures the significance of these results. This model correctly predicts the observed frequency-dependent first-arrival amplitudes at all frequencies and can be used for reflected waves. Scattering and geometric spreading (focusing and defocusing of wave fronts) significantly affect seismic amplitudes at lower frequencies and shallower depths. Using of complete well logs, a model of P- and S-wave scattering is derived from direct-wave attenuation observations by numerical and analytical methods. Both approaches reveal fluctuations in the transmitted-energy flux within different depth intervals, and particularly at frequencies above 60 Hz. A randomization of well logs suggests that the upper envelope of the transmitted energy flux (corresponding to strongest transmission) is a reasonable estimate for random scattering. The lower envelope corresponding to the strongest reflectivity appears to be a useful characteristic of the fluctuations in the scattered wavefields. Once these ‘random’ and ‘fluctuation’ attenuations are modeled, they can be isolated from the intrinsic and geometric effects. Finally, three amplitude-based methods are used to separate the effects of CO2 pressure and saturation in the Weyburn reservoir. Based on these results, an area close to an injection well within the southern part of the study area is interpreted as having the highest pressure, and the area between the northern and eastern wells show the highest CO2 saturation. Near the center of the study area, the effects of CO2 saturation and pressure appear to be the weakest. ▼ Anthropogenic Climate Change is amongst the greatest challenges of human civilization. A key area that will play a large role in mitigating its effects are clean fossil fuel applications. Clean coal combustion is one such application with an urgent timeline. This can be achieved with an oxygen-fired pressurized fluidized bed combustor with downstream carbon capture and sequestration. In relation to pressurized fluidization processes, understanding the influence of pressure on bed hydrodynamics and in turn their effect on parameters including fuel residence time is essential. For the proposed combustor, the heat exchanger boiler tubes are submerged in the fluidized bed such that the effect of a horizontal tube bank on the fuel residence time is also of great importance. The main focus of present work was to evaluate the impact of gas velocity, pressure, presence of a tube bank and fuel feed rate on the average fuel residence time. Experiments were conducted under cold flow conditions in a pilot-scale pressurized fluidized bed with an inner diameter of 0.15 m. The fluidization material was relatively large glass beads (1.0 mm in diameter) while the fuel particles were simulated with smaller glass beads (40 to 138 μm in diameter), susceptible to entrainment. Operating pressures and superficial gas velocities tested were between 101.3 and 1200 kPa and 0.4 and 1.1 m/s respectively. To simulate coal combustors, experiments were then conducted in a continuous mode where the fuel particles were continuously fed to the fluidized bed of large particles over a desired period of time. Downstream, entrained particles were continuously captured to determine the entrainment rate and mass of fuel particles inside the fluidized bed at steady state, which yielded the average fuel residence time. The combination of elevated pressure with the tube bank present was found to enhance gas bubble break up and reduce the average gas bubble size. In turn, this increased the average fuel residence time of 83 μm particles by nearly 3 fold to a value of 77 s in comparison to 27 s at atmospheric pressure. The effect of gas velocity was not found to be statistically significant under the range tested. Similarly the effect of increased fuel feed rate by 50% neither had a statistically significant impact.

L’objectif majeur de cette thèse de doctorat est d’étudier la pression temporelle afin de mieux appréhender cette notion si familière et pourtant si peu étudiée. A partir de l’observation de l’omniprésence de cette pression temporelle dans notre société et de l’importance de la perception du temps dans nos activités quotidiennes, nous avons choisi de l’examiner à travers son influence sur l’estimation de durées. Pour ce faire, nous avons mis en place une série d’expérimentations : d’abord dans le cadre de la littérature sur l’estimation du temps, utilisant des tâches temporelle d’estimation verbale et de production de durées ; puis dans le cadre de la littérature sur la mémoire prospective, et plus précisément avec des tâches de mémoire prospective basée sur le temps. Notre hypothèse est que la pression temporelle provoque une modification du temps perçu. Les résultats de nos premières expérimentations réalisées avec des tâches temporelles d’estimation verbale et de production de durées révèlent que soumettre des participants à une condition de pression temporelle provoque une distorsion temporelle comparée à une condition sans pression temporelle. Cette distorsion temporelle va dans le sens d’une surestimation des durées. En revanche, aucun effet de la pression temporelle n’a été relevé dans les expérimentations réalisées avec les tâches de mémoire prospective basée sur le temps, si ce n’est sur les performances à la tâche non temporelle, aussi appelée tâche en cours.

This doctoral thesis aims at investigating time pressure to have a better understanding of this so familiar concept and yet so little studied. On the one hand, time pressure is ubiquitous in our occidental society; on the other hand, time perception is essential in our daily activities. Then, we have consciously opted to study time pressure through its effects on time estimation. To this end, we elaborate series of experiments within two different frameworks; time estimation literature with two different tasks (verbal estimation and time production) and prospective memory literature, more precisely with time-based prospective memory tasks. Our assumption is that time pressure leads to a subjective time distortion. The results of our experiments reveal that time pressure causes a temporal distortion when participants have to estimate or produce a duration: in the condition with time pressure they overestimate durations, compared to a condition without time pressure. In contrast, no time pressure effect is revealed on the temporal component of our time-based prospective memory task; but performance on the ongoing task is affected by time pressure.
