▼ Landslides are recurrent phenomena in Murang’a and Mt. Elgon Districts, causing loss of lives,
property and fertile farmland. Despite the grievous danger posed, comparative studies of
landslides in the two districts have neither been carried out nor has the use of state-of-the-art
methods of landslide risk assessment been applied.
In this review paper, the factors influencing the occurrence of landslides in Murang’a and Mt.
Elgon Districts have been comparatively studied in order to review how these factors influence
landslide occurrence. The four factors discussed in depth include geology, topography, rainfall
distribution, and soil-sediment characteristics. In the two districts, the four factors play relatively
a similar role as far as landslide occurrence is concerned. Therefore, such comparative studies
can be used to predict landslide vulnerability in different areas.
Two major techniques of landslide hazard assessment that is, application of GIS and rainfall
thresholds, have been reviewed with an aim of boosting landslide research in the two districts. In
the application of GIS in landslide assessment, creation of a standard GIS landslide database has
been carried out in accordance with some successful GIS databases in the world. The database
has been used to construct various landslide vulnerability maps for both Murang’a and Mt Elgon
Districts.
A comprehensive review of landslide assessment using rainfall thresholds has been carried out.
However, this method cannot be accurately applied in the two districts due to limitations of
rainfall data (hourly rainfall data) due to lack of relevant instruments such as pluviometers.

▼ Mestrado em Economia
In our research, we study the effect of public debt on economic growth for annual and 5-year average growth rates, as well as the existence of non-linearity effects of debt on growth for 14 European countries since 1970 until 2012. We also consider debt-to-GDP ratio interactions with monetary, public finance, institutional and macroeconomic variables. We conclude that debt has a negative impact of -0.01% for each increment of 1% of public debt, although debt service has a 10 times worse effect on growth. We reach average thresholds for annual and 5-year average of 75% and 74%, respectively. Belonging to Eurozone has a detrimental effect of at least -0.5% for real per capita GDP, and banking crisis is the most harmful crisis for the growth phenomena.

▼ Current methods for diagnosing and evaluating efficacy for treatment of diabetic neuropathy either give only subjective data or are invasive. However, the use of laser induced sensations to evaluate threshold sensations gives precisely quantifiable and reproducible stimulus and is 100% non-invasive. In this study we evaluated whether or not laser sensation
thresholds were stable in 12 human subjects over a four month period of time. Subjects' hands and feet were exposed over eight different exposure sessions to 10 ms pulses of laser light produced by a 50 W Tm: YAG laser system. Sensation threshold values (in mJ/mm2) were determined for each session and compared by regression analysis. The results showed an upward trend in sensation
thresholds over time in the majority of the
subject's hands and feet, indicating that laser sensation
thresholds are not stable over time.
Subject desensitization to the sensation over time combined with too short a time between exposures, or variations in baseline skin temperature of the exposure site due to changes in weather are discussed as possible causes of the upward trend. Finally, suggestions are made for future studies to include a study over a longer period of time with more time between exposure sessions and more subjects as well as a study where the exposure sites are heated/cooled to a standardized baseline temperature prior to each exposure session.

I want to thank Honors program staffs, Jared Diener and Philip Frana, who were so supportive and helpful throughout this project. I also want to thank my professors in Architectural Design who dedicated their time and effort to make this project incredibly strong and unique. Also, I want to thank my parents who supported me undoubtably throughout my whole college career. This project would not have happened if it weren’t for these people that I mentioned above and I am forever thankful.
Text
This project is about how my memories, experiences, and emotions from my grandmother’s house can be translated into new unprecedented
thresholds in the future.
Why
Thresholds?
Because architects, engineers, and designers do not think at all about threshold while designing.
Thresholds these days are just wooden doors and metal handles. It is sad and unfortunate because the most important element in architecture is threshold. It is the first space that you enter, the first thing you touch, and the first thing you see before you enter into this mysterious space that exists beyond.
Thresholds should hint what kind of space lies beyond to people who have no idea. It is like meeting people for the first time. The first impression is the strongest impression that you can possibly make.
Why my grandmother’s house?
My grandmother’s house is special not only to me but in Korea. It is designed and built by my great grandfather. It has been in my family for generations and it is one of the few traditional Korean houses that is still privately owned. Korean government wants to make it a national treasure so it could be open to public. Also,
thresholds in my grandmother’s house is well thought and designed successfully to portraits what lies beyond them.
I picked 10 specific spots from my grandmother’s house that I love the most. From my memories, experiences, and emotions from those 10 spots, I designed 10 new
thresholds that would exists in the future.

▼ This research thesis explores improving auditory perception through the use of stochastic resonance (SR), a phenomenon in which the throughput of non-linear signals is enhanced using additive noise. While SR has been successfully explored in a variety of perceptual channels (visual, tactile, vestibular), past psychoacoustic experiments have yielded conflicting results. This study aims to understand how SR can be observed in the auditory system accounting for individual differences. Two studies were carried out to investigate SR within the auditory system. Both studies observed how white noise magnitude influences perception of pure tone stimuli across the frequency spectrum. The Threshold Optimization Study aimed to correlate SR enhancement with a subject’s audiometric threshold, predicting that noise levels equal to the subject’s threshold at a specific frequency tone would yield the highest SR benefit. Ten subjects completed pure tone audiometry with and without noise. Observing auditory
thresholds with subthreshold, at-threshold, and suprathreshold additive noise yielded insignificant results. The noise levels tested did not improve or worsen audiometric performance across the board, which led to changes in the experimental methodology, specifically the noise levels that were presented and signal administration. Using those changes a second Protocol Development Study was conducted to replicate the results found in past psychoacoustic studies. The additional study also aimed to observe SR, but expanded the noise spectrum to also find the masking that was not discovered in the first study. Four lab members completed pure tone audiometry with and without the presence of noise over a broad range of noise levels. A qualitative analysis suggests masking existed for frequencies with low
thresholds given the noise levels that were tested. For some subjects, SR benefits may have been observed, but for others they did not appear to be present. With these small
subject numbers, this study did not yield conclusive results. A discussion of the results, as well as, further improvements into the experimental methods is given. Applying these lessons learned, more accurate perceptual threshold testing can be conducted within the lab, allowing greater reporting confidence for future studies. ▼ This thesis is about the exploration of a new building
type that is missing from society today. The introduction of
spiritual infrastructure aims to meet each individuals spiritual
needs through a series of new public buildings stitched into the
existing urban fabric. The program develops from a study of
spiritual activities currently existing in the city that are in
need of identity. Throughout this thesis, an architectural language
emerges to reflect spirituality in the city through various uses of
program. Using the City of Moncton to apply the thesis, zoning
studies are identified to determine potential sites of
spirituality, challenging the existing programs. Spirituality is an
integral part of how people deal with struggles and celebrations in
life. This new building type aims to strengthen communities by
offering society a spiritual dimension into their everyday
lives.

▼ The northern Pacific perhumid coastal temperate rainforest (PCTR) extends along the Pacific coast from central British Columbia through south-central Alaska. Soil hydrology is a dominant ecosystem control in the PCTR, affecting soil formation, vegetation distribution, biogeochemical cycling, and carbon storage. Despite the importance of soil hydrology to the ecosystem, there have been few studies investigating water table dynamics and runoff generation in the PCTR. In this study, we applied two methods to investigate this interaction across a replicated set of three common sub-catchment types spanning a range of landscape units. Over the summer and fall of 2013 we monitored sub-catchment discharge, water table position, and precipitation in order to measure catchment moisture balance and the interaction between water table and runoff. There was a strong non-linear response in the wet soil catchments (fen and forested wetland), with > 80% of runoff occurring above a threshold water table position. The hydrology of the upland sites appears to be controlled by shallow rock horizons. Despite cool summertime temperatures and frequent precipitation, catchments experience a moisture deficit during the summer months that is reflected in the water table positions and catchment runoff ratios. Because of the strong dependence of runoff on water table position, changes in seasonal moisture balance that affect the water table have the potential to cause large, non-linear changes in runoff generation and biogeochemical cycling. We also made use of an existing five year dataset from the same catchments to model catchment storage / discharge relationships as ordinary, non-linear, first-order differential equations. Performance of the models varied across sub-catchments, simulating discharge reasonably well in some (Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency 0.20 - 0.45) and poorly in others (Nash-Sutcliffe < 0). This difference in model performance appears to be the result of un-accounted for subsurface flow. Despite the failure of the model to recreate catchment functioning across all sites, an initial comparison between modeled storage / discharge relationships and observed water table and discharge showed a correlation between modeled and physical behavior.

▼ Up to 95% of orthodontic patients report pain during orthodontic treatment, with up to 10% of patients interrupting their treatment due to the pain experienced. Pain is highly subjective: there is a range of pain response among individuals undergoing orthodontic treatment, with some patients feeling high levels of pain and others just mild discomfort. The reasons for this variability are largely unknown. Objective: To investigate factors that may be associated with orthodontic pain experience. Methods: First, 107 participants were screened for pain response over 48 hours following placement of orthodontic elastomeric separators. Second, the highest (n=10) and lowest (n=10) pain responders were identified and data collected on age, ethnicity, sex, self-rated oral health, anxiety, mood, dental anxiety and fear, catastrophising, general sensitivity (cold) and tooth sensitivity. They also provided a saliva sample for Catechol-O-Methyltransferase (COMT) gene sequencing. Results: Statistically significant differences between high and low pain responders were identified with the Pain Catastrophising Scale (PCS), Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS) and Cold Pressor Tests. Multivariate analysis was carried out using a generalised linear model. The empty model showed that 39.3% of pain response type (high or low) is explained by the magnification subcategory of the PCS; once all other variables were controlled for, the adjusted model explained 80% of the variance in the magnification subscale of the PCS. Of the three single nucleotide polymorphisms of the COMT gene analysed, only rs6269 showed an association with pain responders’ haplotypes (albeit marginal). Conclusions: Pain catastrophising, dental anxiety and cold sensitivity appear to modify orthodontic pain experience. A few simple screening questions may help to identify patients at risk prior to commencing orthodontic treatment, so that patient-specific management strategies can minimise orthodontic discomfort.

▼ The project shows the potential of the transition space, by mediating between the individual “the body” and their surroundings. A thesis critical of architecture based on perception and behaviour. The project is a case study located in the city centre of Rotterdam "Kruisplein area" to show the potential of a place in the city which is currently formalized by different forms, systems and relations. For this, a tapestry is introduced; "the ground undulation” to undo the static-ness and undulate the user. The project has the intention to create a more porous and paused environment by penetrating in the tapestry with architectural compositions, all having different objectives. ▼ A novel model was developed to test the use of short data sets for testing various alarm
thresholds as part of an energy management program. Several years of 15-minute interval data were utilized from five buildings in Jacksonville, Florida. The model aggregated the data by day type and occupancy so that there were four period types used. For all of the buildings’ meters, their daily usage by period type was tested against the threshold to determine if an alarm would be triggered, which would then be assigned a reward and cost based upon the type and duration of response. The risk management value was converted to dollars, in order to normalize the energy and time. It was determined that the 5-month short data set was the most appropriate choice for short data sets. In addition, it was concluded that the
thresholds should be set between 0.8 and 1.0 standard deviation above the average of the short window. Several recommendations for further study are also enclosed.

▼ We study problems in extremal combinatorics motivated by Turan's Theorem and Ramsey Theory. In Chapter 2, we use Flag Algebras to study these problems. With Balogh, Lidicky, Pikhurko, Udvari and Volec, we gave the exact structures of permutations of [n] = {1,...,n} which maximize the number of monotone subsequences of length 4. With Balogh, Lidicky and Liu, we gave upper bounds on the number of edges of C4-free hypercubes and C6-free hypercubes. The n-dimensional Boolean lattice B
n denotes the partial ordered set whose elements are all subsets of [n] ordered by inclusion. A layer of B
n is a family of sets of the same size. We also gave upper bounds on the sizes of B
2-free subposets of three layers of B
n.
In Chapter 3, we study a variation of both Turan type problems and Ramsey type problems. Let H be a graph and f(n) be a function. Sos and Erdos – Sos defined 'Ramsey-Turan' function RT(n,H,f(n) to be the maximum number of edges of an H-free graph on n vertices with independence number less than f(n). With Balogh and Simonovits, we answered a question from Erdos and Sos by proving that RT(n,K
5,o(√{n log n}))=o(n
2). We also extended this result to several other K
ls and functions f(n).
In Chapter 4, we study a sparse version of Turan type problems. The maximum 3-uniform hypergraphs that do not contain a copy of F5={abc, ade, bde}, sometimes called the generalized triangle, is tripartite. With Balogh, Butterfield and Lenz, we extended this result to the sparse random setting, proving that with probability tending to 1 the largest subgraph of the random 3-uniform hypergraph that does not contain F5 is tripartite.
In Chapter 5, we study chromatic threshold, which was motivated by a variation of Turan type problems and introduced by Erdos and Simonovits. The chromatic threshold of a family of r-uniform hypergraphs F is the infimum of all non-negative reals c such that the subfamily of F comprising hypergraphs H with minimum degree at least c\binom{|V(H)|}{r-1} has bounded chromatic number. The problem of chromatic
thresholds of graphs has been well studied, but there have been no previous results about the chromatic
thresholds of r-uniform hypergraphs for r>=3. With Balogh, Butterfield, Lenz and Mubayi, we proved an upper bound on the family of F5-free 3-uniform hypergraphs. We also gave constructions to show lower bounds on more families of 3-uniform hypergraphs.

▼ Higher visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is associated with higher levels of cardiometabolic risks factors. Bosch et al. (1) identified sex-specific total body fat percent
thresholds above which VAT increased significantly in a population that was 70% White and 21% Black and ranged in age from 19-47 years. These
thresholds were strongly correlated to increased cardiometabolic risk factors. The purposes of this study were to confirm Bosch et al. (1) and examine the effects of ethnicity on the percent body fat threshold in a wider age range. First, data were obtained from Black and White females (n=800) and males (n= 673), 19-47 years of age to identify sex-specific body fat
thresholds. Second, an expanded analysis, included data from 1,756 females and 1,455 males, 18-75 years of age who were Asian (18.1%), Black (6.7%), Hispanic (19.8%) and White (55.4%). Piecewise regression was used to identify sex-specific
thresholds in the Bosch replication. In the expanded data analysis, it was used to identify sex and ethnicity specific
thresholds, whereas the expanded analysis examined sex and ethnicity specific
thresholds. Results demonstrated, the threshold for females and males was 36.2% and 25.8%, respectively. The expanded analysis showed that ethnicity affected the percent fat threshold, particularly for Asian females. For females, the
thresholds were 28.9% for Asian, 32.1% for Hispanic, 34.2% for White, and 35.6% for Black. For males the
thresholds were 22.9% for White, 24.0% for Black, 24.3% for Hispanic, and 25.3% for Asian. While statistical comparison between the two studies and amongst the ethnicities could not be done, this study largely confirms the Bosch et al (1)
thresholds. In addition, it shows that the Asian female threshold is lower, but
thresholds among the other ethnicities are similar. This research is important because replication of studies with a different sample helps confirm or contradict previous findings and adding other variables, such as ethnicity, helps further explain why differences may occur.

Métodos e Procedimentos: Na entrevista, as
A mediana do limiar

We study the Mayer series for the bidimensional Yukawa gas. We briefly introduce the notion of a Mayer series of a non-ideal gas using cluster expansions and present some motivations on the dificulties this formalism may present. An algebraic formalism is introduced in order to develop an alternative tool to study this series using a majorant method via partial diferential equations. As the Yukawa gas is not regular at the origin, it should be regularized for the majorant method to be applicable. It is believed that the non-regularized Yukawa series presents divergence on its coeficients of order 2k when the inverse temperature > k :=
8(2k - 1)/2k due to the collapse of neutral multipoles belonging to clusters of this order and if we omit these coficients, the convergence is obtained. Finally we study the convergence of the Mayer series of a bidimensional Yukawa gas when the regularization is removed when < 16/3 and we extend these results to < 6. Its is shown explicitly that the coeficient of order 2 diverges but can be regularized if < 6, assuring the convergence of the remaining series when the coeficient of order 2 is omitted.

▼ In cooperative communications systems, multiple relays selection scheme and adaptive relay selection scheme are usually adopted. In both schemes, the system makes selections based on instantaneous channel status. However, such schemes have an extremely high computational complexity. In particular, when the channels experience fast fading, the systems do not have sufficient to make a correct decision.
In this thesis, statistical channel properties are utilized in deciding whether cooperative transmission should be adopted or not. In our investigations, the cooperative mechanism includes direct transmission (DT), decode-and-forward (DF) relaying and amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying. The Ergodic capacity is adopted throughout the theoretical analyses. In addition, a number of approximated
thresholds are derived to assist the decision process.
Simulation experiments are conducted to verify the derived results. It is shown that the proposed transmission scheme using the cooperative
thresholds is effective in deciding when the cooperative communication is necessary.

▼ Interactions between corn earworm, <i>Helicoverpa zea</i> (Boddie), and soybean, <i>Glycine max</i> L. (Merrill), were investigated in the Mid-South to evaluate
thresholds and damage levels. Field studies were conducted in both indeterminate and determinate modern cultivars to evaluate damage, critical injury levels, and soybean response to simulated corn earworm injury. Field studies were also conducted to evaluate the response of indeterminate cultivars to infestations of corn earworm. Field studies were also conducted to investigate the relationship between pyrethroid insecticide application and corn earworm oviposition in soybean.
Results of field studies involving simulated corn earworm damage indicated the need for a dynamic threshold that becomes more conservative as soybean phenology progressed through the reproductive growth stages. This suggested that soybean was more tolerant to fruit loss during the earlier reproductive stages and was able to compensate for fruit loss better during this time than at later growth stages.
Results of field studies involving infestations of corn earworm indicated that current
thresholds are likely too liberal. This resulted in economic injury level tables
being constructed based upon a range of crop values and control costs, however, a general action threshold was also recommended for indeterminate soybean in the Mid-South.
Field study results investigating the relationship of pyrethroid application and corn earworm oviposition indicated that even in the presence of an insecticide, corn earworm prefers to oviposit in the upper portion of the canopy, as well as on the leaves as opposed to all other plant parts, consistent with all previous literature.

This study measures the masking of ability of 800
mg of ibuprofen on common endodontic diagnostic tests (cold,
palpation, percussion) and bite force. Preoperative administration
of 800 mg of ibuprofen did not result in statistically significant
different diagnostic testing results or mechanical pain thresholds
over the placebo treatment group. Although the results from this
present study are not statistically significant, these results can
be clinically significant and have impact on diagnosis and
resulting treatment in certain instances. In patients with
SIRP/SAP, ibuprofen masked palpation values by 40% and percussion
values by 25% with little change on mechanical pain thresholds.
Therefore, the bite force transducer could have potential future
use as a diagnostic aid. Competent clinicians should develop an
accurate diagnosis after utilizing a variety of endodontic
diagnostic tests using a system of checks and balances. If this
information does not coincide, then patients are encouraged to
return the dental office when their symptoms resume. Since results
from common endodontic testing can be masked by a high, single dose
of ibuprofen, patients should be advised not to take ibuprofen
prior to their return dental visit to aid in the proper
diagnosis.

▼ A drip type rainfall simulator and an existing watershed study were used to assess relationships between runoff, infiltration, erosion and associated risk
thresholds on a range watershed in Brazos County, Texas. The focus of the research was determining erosion risk associated with seasonal variations in precipitation and vegetation. The objectives were to (1) develop a climatic profile for Brazos County, Texas, (2) evaluate relationships between vegetative cover, infiltration, runoff, and climatic events, (3) quantify erosion/ runoff risk associated with measured vegetation, soil moisture, and climatic events, and (4) identify potential managerial
thresholds for erosion risk management on similar range watersheds. The current year climatic profile showed the wettest season was summer with thirty-two percent of the precipitation coming from one rainfall event. Also, October through December was higher than the long-term rainfall average. Pair wise correlations identified season, initial time to runoff, percent litter, annual as the dominant species, soil moisture, amount to runoff and amount to storage as significant (p<0.05) variables affecting runoff and infiltration. Percent saturation and annuals as the dominant species were significant variables affecting sediment yield. During the current study, seasonal variations in precipitation patterns influenced runoff, infiltration, and sediment yield. Spring and summer had the highest infiltration rates while the largest runoff events were in fall and winter. The highest percent of soil saturation coincided with the largest runoff and sediment losses.
Minimums of two centimeters (winter and fall) and three centimeters (spring and summer) initiated runoff. This rainfall threshold would be exceeded 20 percent of the time based on the climatic profile developed for Brazos County. Peak biomass production for the watershed site was 170.61 g/m2. This was above the recommended biomass threshold of 134.5 to 168.1 grams/m2 to minimize sediment loss for tallgrass rangeland. Annual sediment loss was 10.8 grams/m2, which is negligible. Additional research across a wider array of site variation is needed to identify appropriate
thresholds for the Post Oak Savanna ecosystem.

▼ Sweet wines predate biblical times and the popularity of sweet wines continues to flourish today. Traditionally, the key to creating a sweet wine has been to stop fermentation before the yeast consumes all the grapes’ sugars. However, alternative practices have been adopted to better meet market demand for these products. Back-sweetening has become a common practice in which a sweetener is added to wine after fermentation is complete, creating a sweet, high alcohol wine. However, because there is limited information available about back-sweetening, many wineries may be making uninformed decisions about their back-sweetening practices. The goals of this thesis were to investigate the dose response functions for sucrose on perceived sweetness in wine and to determine the difference
thresholds, as well as the Weber Ratios of sucrose, when back-sweetening white and red table wines with varying acidity levels. While sucrose is traditionally used to back-sweeten wine, there is a growing demand for sweet wines for calorie conscious consumers. Thus, a secondary goal was to determine the dose response functions for aspartame on perceived sweetness, as well as the difference
thresholds and Weber Ratios of aspartame while back-sweetening a neutral white and red wine without high acidity. Practically, the data collected indicates winemakers have substantial latitude in reducing the amount of sucrose they add to back-sweeten wines before consumers will notice, greater than 20%. In addition, data collected shows similar results using aspartame to back-sweeten wine and practically that significant changes would need to be made for consumers to perceive a difference in sweetness. Finally, data supports the assertion that simple water based model systems do not always generalize to complex beverages.

▼ Sensory science provides powerful tools for investigating consumer preferences. Chocolate is a product that comes with a host of special considerations when applying sensory evaluation techniques. Refinement of the methodology, analysis and application of a recently developed method, rejection
thresholds, to chocolate products, was the focus of this thesis work. Specifically, rejection
thresholds for an added bitter compound (sucrose octaacetate, SOA) were determined in chocolate-flavored fluid milk, milk chocolate-flavored compound coating, and chocolate ice cream. Bitterness was investigated because it is a necessary component of chocolate flavor at low levels but can become objectionable at higher levels. Responses were analyzed based on participant groupings by self-reported preference for milk or dark chocolate. In all three matrices, the group preferring dark chocolate tolerated significantly more SOA than the group preferring milk chocolate. Chocolate milk acted as a model system in which analysis by sigmoid dose-response function was illustrated. In compound chocolate and chocolate ice cream, use of the method in more complex food systems was demonstrated. Finally, rejection
thresholds for cocoa powder produced from under-fermented cocoa beans (high cocoa flavanol (CF) natural cocoa powder) was determined in semisweet solid chocolate. This threshold is of interest to the confectionery industry as recent research has focused on potential cardiovascular health benefits from naturally occurring cocoa polyphenols, the content of which is higher in cocoa products subjected to limited fermentation. No significant differences were observed between groups preferring milk chocolate or dark chocolate in this study. The group rejection threshold was 80.7% of the non-fat cocoa solids coming from the high CF natural cocoa powder in a semisweet chocolate.

▼ This research reports on the use of the resilience assessment approach to evaluate the social-ecological systems (SES) at the NWU (Vaal) for a nine month period from March 2013 to November 2013. The research aims to determine the merits of the use of a resilience assessment approach to determine the resilience of the NWU (Vaal) in respect of social-ecological systems.
Objectives of the research include the identification of disturbing events to environmental resilience, to construct a conceptual social-ecological systems model of the NWU (Vaal) in order to determine thresholds relevant to resilience and to determine if the resilience assessment approach can be applied at the NWU (Vaal).
Data was collected in the form of a literature review, which aided with the construction of a time line for the focal social-ecological system; document reviews, interviews with relevant role players, observation by the researcher and the use of the assessment approach to construct the social-ecological system model.
The research findings include identification of possible disturbances and thresholds relevant to resilience of the social-ecological system of the NWU (Vaal). The construction of a social-ecological system model of the NWU (Vaal) aids with proposals to incorporate a stewardship approach which enhance resilience of the focal social-ecological system.

▼ Dwelling on Thresholds reflects upon different modes of living/being, how we feel in different rooms and whom we decide to share space with. It asks how the spaces we dwell in affect our ability to access common and private spheres when needed or wanted. Along the way, tactility has come to play a big part in the work which has visually crystallized into a 30 m2 threshold curtain made up of floor plans of all apartments I have lived in over the past 10 years. An abstract information graphics with textures and colour nuances reflecting levels of well-being, alienation and moods in-between. The accompanying publication investigates our constructed environment as well as modes of thinking and dwelling in ‘the common’.

▼ Interior designers are often tasked with providing solutions for spaces that are defined as being inside. Interior design should not be limited to this condition. Spaces have qualities and characteristics that hold value, regardless of whether it is inside, outside, enclosed, or non-enclosed. This practicum project challenges this way of practice by exploring interior and exterior
thresholds.
The explorations of this project are presented through the design of a restaurant in the Assiniboine Forest, Winnipeg, Manitoba. This restaurant highlights the value the Assiniboine Forest has to offer and celebrates these qualities through all four seasons. The built environment highlights key research findings in interior and outdoor rooms, place-making, and
thresholds. Ideas that are discussed in this project are influenced by theorists, researchers, and practitioners such as Christian Norberg-Schulz, Tim Cresswell, Jean Baudrillard, Jane Rendell, Teiji Ito, Barrie Greenbie, and Kengo Kuma, to name a few. I bring forward a design project that illustrates how interior designers can challenge the boundaries that lie between the realms of interior and exterior with particular reference to the conditions of Winnipeg.

▼ The peripheral hearing mechanism, which involves structures and mechanisms that exist between the pinna (part of the ear I can see) and the brainstem, consists of the outer, middle and inner ears. The purpose of this study was to examine the natural resonances of our outer and middle ears and what role they play in determining an individual’s hearing
thresholds. This was done through middle ear reflectance and Békésy audiometry.
Middle ear reflectance permits the opportunity to see how the outer and middle ears affect the acoustic signal across frequency (200-6000 Hz). Minimum audible pressure
thresholds differ as a clinical tool in that they are a behavioral response that reflects the participant’s perception of the acoustic signal across frequency. Threshold refers to the softest sound that a person can hear at any given frequency. Minimum audible pressure
thresholds can be determined at static octave intervals (250, 500, 100, 2000, 4000, and 6000 Hz) or through Békésy Audiometry, which involves a sweeping of frequencies from 125 Hz to 8000 Hz at much smaller frequency. This process results in a minimum audible pressure (MAP) curve made up of more discrete frequency intervals.
I hypothesize that the MAP curve will correlate strongly with the middle ear reflectance curve, suggesting that the natural resonances of the outer and middle ears account for our varying sensitivity across frequency. To my knowledge, these correlations have not yet been examined.

▼ Agricultural land use affects benthic macroinvertebrate (BMI) community structure but riparian forest may mitigate its impact to within a specific threshold. BMI communities were sampled in small streams within the Grand River, Thames River, and Long Point watersheds in southwestern Ontario. The study assessed the location and amount of agricultural land use associated with variation in BMI assemblage structure. Three land use distribution scenarios were evaluated to isolate specific ranges of agricultural land use at either the riparian or catchment scale, with the adjoining scale covering as wide a gradient of agricultural land use as possible. We did identify thresholds but the amount of variation associated with our thresholds would not enable us to suggest specific target ranges for land use managers looking to incorporate them into their stream biomonitoring programs. Further studies that assess various geologies and share wider gradients will improve upon our findings.

▼ Monitoring and mapping the presence and/or intensity of an environmental hazard through space, is an essential part of public health surveillance. Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive carcinogenic gas, is an environmental hazard that is both the greatest source of natural radiation exposure in human populations and the second leading cause of lung cancer worldwide. Concentrations of radon can accumulate in an indoor setting, and, though there is no safe concentration, various guideline values from different countries, organizations and regions provide differing threshold concentrations that are often used to delineate geographic areas at higher risk. Radon maps demarcate geographic areas more prone to higher concentrations but can underestimate or overestimate indoor radon risk depending on the concentration threshold used. The goals of this thesis are to map indoor radon risk in the province of British Columbia, identify areas more prone to higher concentrations and their associations with different radon concentration
thresholds and lung cancer mortality trends.
The first analysis was concerned with developing a data-driven method to predict and map ordinal classes of indoor radon vulnerability at aggregated spatial units. Spatially referenced indoor radon concentration data were used to define low, medium and high classes of radon vulnerability, which were then linked to regional environmental and housing data derived from existing geospatial datasets. A balanced random forests algorithm was used to model environmental predictors of indoor radon vulnerability and predict values for un-sampled locations. A model was generated and evaluated using accuracy, precision, and kappa statistics. We investigated the influence of predictor variables through variable importance and partial dependence plots. The model performed 34% better than a random classifier. Increased probabilities of high vulnerability were found to be associated with cold and dry winters, close proximity to major river systems, and fluvioglacial and colluvial soil parent materials. The Kootenays and Columbia-Shuswap regions were most at risk.
We built upon the first analysis by assessing the difference between temporal trends in lung cancer mortality associated with areas of differing predicted radon risk. We assessed multiple scenarios of risk by using eight different radon concentration
thresholds, ranging from 50 to 600 Bq m-3, to define low and high radon vulnerability. We then examined how the following parameters changed with the use of a different concentration threshold: the classification accuracy of each radon vulnerability model, the geographic characterizations of high risk, the population within high risk areas and the differences in lung cancer mortality trends between high and low vulnerability stratified by sex and smoking prevalence. We found the classification accuracy of the model improved as the threshold concentrations decreased and the area classified as high vulnerability increased. The majority of the population…

▼ This study measures the masking of ability of 800 mg of ibuprofen on common endodontic diagnostic tests (cold, palpation, percussion) and bite force. Preoperative administration of 800 mg of ibuprofen did not result in statistically significant different diagnostic testing results or mechanical pain thresholds over the placebo treatment group. Although the results from this present study are not statistically significant, these results can be clinically significant and have impact on diagnosis and resulting treatment in certain instances. In patients with SIRP/SAP, ibuprofen masked palpation values by 40% and percussion values by 25% with little change on mechanical pain thresholds. Therefore, the bite force transducer could have potential future use as a diagnostic aid. Competent clinicians should develop an accurate diagnosis after utilizing a variety of endodontic diagnostic tests using a system of checks and balances. If this information does not coincide, then patients are encouraged to return the dental office when their symptoms resume. Since results from common endodontic testing can be masked by a high, single dose of ibuprofen, patients should be advised not to take ibuprofen prior to their return dental visit to aid in the proper diagnosis.

▼ The Stenger Principle describes the observation that when two tones of the same frequency are presented simultaneously, a single tone is perceived only in the ear in which the tone is louder. This principle underlies the Stenger Test, which is used to identify the presence of unilateral nonorganic hearing loss (NOHL). Minimum contralateral interference levels (MCILs), which can be used to estimate true hearing
thresholds in individuals with unilateral NOHL, are also based on this principle. In this study, the Stenger Principle is used to examine MCILs and the correspondence of the MCILs to true hearing
thresholds in 16 adults with normal hearing. In Part I of the study, subjects were asked to feign a unilateral hearing loss. Average MCILs were 12.5, 15.1, and 13.5 dB HL for 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 kHz, respectively. These were obtained with nearly equal interaural stimulus levels. The average difference between MCIL and true hearing threshold was 7.6, 9.7, and 8.9 dB, respectively. In Part II of this study, subjects were asked to make lateralization judgments for simultaneously presented tones with varying interaural intensity differences. Individual
subject ratings were compared to MCILs obtained in Part I. Although most subjects showed the Stenger Effect with a midline percept of the two tones, variability between subjects existed. In some cases the Stenger Effect was not apparent until the tonal image was pulled nearly to the "poor" ear. Because of the potential differences in response bias (a client may show the Stenger Effect with a small shift in the tonal signal away from the "good" ear or may require the tonal signal to be fully lateralized to the "poor" ear), clinicians cannot predict exact hearing
thresholds. Rather, it is useful to describe a range within which the true threshold will be. The 90% ranges (5th and 95th percentiles) calculated in this study were approximately 1 and 17 dB. That is, the MCILs for the majority of the subjects were within ~ 1 and 17 dB of true hearing
thresholds.

▼ Visitor use management (VUM) is the proactive and adaptive process for managing characteristics of visitor use and the natural and managerial setting using a variety of strategies and tools to achieve and maintain desired resource conditions and visitor experiences (IVUMC, 2018). For nearly 40 years, the application and operationalization of visitor use management has relied on a normative approach, which assumes that visitors to parks and recreation areas have shared attitudes and preferences about resource and social conditions. Visitor use management frameworks and the normative approach rely on defining management objectives, identifying indicators and
thresholds for the visitor experience, monitoring change in recreation conditions, and adapting management strategies where necessary. This dissertation reexamines some of the scientific methods historically used to inform visitor use management decisions. This dissertation focuses on the development of indicators and associated
thresholds, which has historically relied on visitor surveys, on-site interviews, and management expertise. Given the importance of incorporating the provision of quality visitor experiences into park and protected area planning, and the difficulties associated with understanding the nuances involved in shaping an experience, the purpose of this dissertation is to offer and explore unique techniques that may facilitate the development of indicators and associated
thresholds. This dissertation first used visitor-employed photography to develop indicators of the wildlife viewing experience, where important visitor experience qualities emerged that were not found from survey or interview questions. This dissertation additionally offered a more efficient and perhaps more valid technique for defining
thresholds for the indicator of people at one time (PAOT), which is used as a proxy to indicate use-levels and crowding. Results indicate that a combination of the traditional and novel approach may be appropriate. Lastly, this dissertation explored the phenomenon of displacement, which has historically been treated as a negative outcome of the visitor experience. The results of this suggest that displacement should be operationalized as an indicator of the visitor experience, rather than an outcome. This dissertation overall contributes to the development and application of the normative approach to protected area management and planning.

▼ Recreational boating is a popular activity on public waterways. Boaters enjoy a multitude of natural lakes and rivers, but these waterways are a limited natural resource. In some cases, crowding caused by high rates of boating participation has strained the capacity of this natural resource base, generating conflict between participants and environmental impacts. Therefore, waterway managers may develop regulations for the number or types of boats allowed at one time. This is often referred to as visitor capacity.
With many waterways in the U.S. located in protected areas (PAs), their management are guided by legal regulations or statutory frameworks such as the Wilderness Act (1964) and the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act (1968). Therefore, waterway managers need to develop and implement comprehensive visitor use strategies that cover various visitor types and address a wide range of possible impacts on resources and visitor experiences.
In defining the quality of boating experiences, consideration is given to the safety and enjoyment of boaters. To better understand acceptable boating conditions, waterway managers need to investigate 1) the maximum amounts and types of boating use that an area can accommodate while achieving and maintaining the desired conditions and experiences (i.e., boating
thresholds), and 2) how boaters respond to various weather and climatic conditions.
This dissertation represents a substantial contribution to the outdoor recreation field because past studies about the on-site experiences of recreational boaters in public waterways are often dated or underexplored. Specifically, the influence of weather on recreation-particularly water-based recreation-is often assumed rather than demonstrated. Boaters are often exposed to the elements of weather with minimal protection, therefore it is important to understand how weather influences boating use levels. Additionally, weather and climate research has mainly focused on tourism while paying little attention to recreation. With regards to boating
thresholds, they are in some cases from sources that may be out of date, with some being more than 20 years old. These
thresholds are still being used by agencies to manage boating. Also, by simulating current and projected recreational boat use levels, waterways managers may begin to better understand boaters’ patterns of use and how they intersect with empirically-based
thresholds for boating.
In the dissertation two distinct sites (i.e., reservoirs from a hydro-power project, and a wild and scenic river system) were selected. A quantitative approach was applied in this study. Surveys, field cameras and Global Positioning System devices were used to collect data. The study findings update and provide context-specific standards for boating density based on boaters’ perceptions. Additionally, the findings can help waterway agencies better manage short-term boater demand because of changes in weather, and adapt to long-term climate changes in visitor use…
