Complex systems range from business entities, the human brain, to the climate. These systems have tipping points at which a small perturbation can trigger a critical transition leading to an emergence at an alternate stable state. Although there are differences in the nature of different complex systems, their behaviors exhibit universal characteristics as they near a tipping point. Among such characteristics are the common generic early warning signals that precede critical transitions. The signals include: critical slowing down in which the rate of recovery from perturbations decreases over time; an increase in the variance and skewness of the state variable; an increase in the autocorrelation of the state variable; flickering between different states; and an increase in spatial correlations. The presence of such signals has significant management implications, as the identification of signals prior to the tipping points could allow management to identify intervention points. A review of literature did not identify any applications for the signals in managing undergraduate program student withdrawal at distance universities, hence the research gap. This research assessed the signals through an intensive case study of undergraduate program student withdrawal at a Canadian Distance University by comparing the incidences of the signals among inactive students to the incidences of the signals among graduates. Findings showed support for the signal on the rise in flickering, represented in the increase in the student’s non-pass rates prior to withdrawing from a program; moderate support for the signal of critical slowing down, reflected in the longer time a student spends in a course; and moderate support for the signals on increase in autocorrelation, skewness and variance in the grade variable. The research also extended knowledge by investigating whether the emergence of a program withdrawal status is self-similar at the program level and the course level. Findings moderately supported self-similarity as a potential signal. In conclusion, the research into the signals and self-similarity suggests that the signals could be potentially utilized as a predictive management tool. These findings represent the beginnings of future research into the creation of program withdrawal Complexity based models and the possible identification of intervention points.

▼ The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope is being designed as a premier scientific instrument of the 21st century, using novel technologies to maximise its scientific capability. The SKA has an aggressive project timeline, dynamic and evolving scientific requirements, and a large design exploration space with many interdependent sub-systems. These complexities increase the difficulty in developing cost-effective design solutions that maximise the scientific capability of the telescope within construction and operations funding constraints.To gain insight into specific design challenges in this thesis, I have developed parametric models of the telescope system that relate cost to key performance metrics. I examine, as case studies, three aspects of the SKA design that have had little investigation compared to the rest of the telescope to date, but show considerable potential for discovering new astronomical phenomena.First, I present fast transient survey strategies for exploring high time resolution parameter space, and consider the system design implications of these strategies. To maximise the scientific return from limited processing capacity, I develop a new metric, ‘event rate per beam’, to measure the cost-effectiveness of the various search strategies. The most appropriate search strategy depends on the observed sky direction and the source population; for SKA Phase 1, low-frequency aperture arrays tend to be more effective for extragalactic searches, and dishes more effective for directions of increased scatter broadening, such as near the Galactic plane.Second, I compare the cost of two design solutions for low-frequency sparse aperture array observations (70–450 MHz) that achieve similar performance: a single-band implementation with a wideband antenna design; and a dual-band implementation, with each array observing approximately half the fractional bandwidth. Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, despite the dual-band array having twice the number of antenna elements, neither a representative single or dual-band implementation is cheaper a priori, although the uncertainties are currently high. In terms of the broader telescope system design, I show that the central processing, antenna deployment and site preparation costs are potentially significant cost drivers that have so far had insufficient attention.Third, the recent site decision gives rise to the question of how to cost-effectively provide data connectivity to widely separated antennas, to enable high angular resolution observations with the SKA dish array in Africa. To facilitate the design of such a data network, I parametrise the performance and cost of an exemplar network using three simple metrics: maximum baseline length; number of remote stations (grouped antennas) on long baselines; and the product of bandwidth and number of station beams. ▼ This study extends the understanding of leadership emergence from a relational perspective (Hosking, 2011; Cunliffe & Eriksen, 2011; Uhl-Bien, 2006), specifically related to the forming of trusting relationships. The argument follows from the conceptual development of subjectification processes referred to as “care of the self” (Foucault M. , 1988; Foucault M. , 2005) and the implications of “regimes of practices" (Foucault M. , 2010; Dean, 2010). The findings contribute to our understanding of the relation between patterns of differentiation and reciprocity (as contextual definitions) and the relational emergence of leadership. We conceive leadership formed by actions that have no instrumental purpose beyond constructing a subject able to form trusting relationships and judge this to be a phronetic practice. The research is based on a case study of the executive team of a large copper mining company implementing a sustainability strategy that has as its central purpose the construction of trusting relations within a complex net of stakeholders. Based on this case, my second contribution is to conceptualise the function of “parrhēsia practice” (Foucault M. , 2010), a “truth game” about truth, truth-telling and action in the relation of the self and others, which is significant in the formation of the relational leadership of the “conscious pariah” (Arendt, 1978). The study examines how it is that “truth games” of examining the self and “reframing” interactional patterns can facilitate the relational emergence of phronetic forms of leadership. The research methodology, designed to deal from a non-dualistic perspective with the relational emergence of leadership, uses a narrative research approach to describe practices (Czarniawska, Narratives in Social Science Research, 2011). It is “uncovered” as representational and dualistic in the research relation, and a discussion of how a non-dualistic research approach could be developed is provided.

In this re-gard, the aim of this work is to design a fully autonomous electronic system for a smart bottle packaging, being integrated in a European project named ROLL-OUT. The desired application for the smart bottle is to act as a fill-level sensor system in order to determine the liquid content level that exists inside an opaque bottle, so the consumer can exactly know the remaining quantity of the product inside. An in-house amorphous indium–gallium–zinc oxide thin-film transistor (a-IGZO TFT) model, previously developed, was used for circuit designing purposes. This model was based in an artificial neural network (ANN) equivalent circuit approach. Taking into account that only n-type oxide TFTs were used, plenty of electronic building-blocks have been designed: clock generator, non-overlapping phase generator, a capacitance-to-voltage converter and a comparator. As it was demonstrated by electrical simulations, it has been achieved good functionality for each block, having a final system with a power dissipation of 2.3 mW (VDD=10 V) not considering the clock generator. Four printed circuit boards (PCBs) have been also designed in order to help in the testing phase. Sistemizacija delovnih mest je močan vir podatkov za upravljanje organizacij. Je osnovno orodje za upravljanje procesov dela in človeškega kapitala. Pri razporeditvi delovnih obremenitev in vrednotenju učinkov dela zagotavlja načelo enakopravnosti in poštenosti. Vzporedno z razvojem družbe in s tem organizacij se razvija tudi sistemizacija delovnih mest in vse bolj pridobiva na pomenu, vendar klasična sistemizacija dela postaja neuporabna v organizacijah, kjer se delo hitro spreminja in prerašča količinska in rutinska obeležja. S tem organizacija izgublja ključno organizacijsko in managersko orodje, s katerim je mogoče uravnavati delovne in poslovne procese ter človeške vire. Če sodobno organizacijo vidimo kot dinamično, hitro prilagodljivo, usmerjeno k napredku in razvoju, neustrašno in odločno, mora biti temu prilagojena tudi sistemizacija dela, ki bo sposobna slediti vsakemu koraku spreminjanja. Spreminjanje oz. posodabljanje sistemizacije zavira predvsem pomanjkanje strokovnega znanja o (sodobnem) sistemiziranju delovnih mest, zato številne slovenske organizacije zaostajajo na tem področju. S spreminjanjem organizacije se mora nujno spremeniti tudi sistemizacija in njeni nameni. V magistrskem delu smo po opravljeni predhodni analizi na 202 zaposlenih, v kateri smo raziskovali njihovo zaznavanje problemskega stanja, opravili analizo mnenj kadrovskih ekspertov v slovenskih podjetjih, ki uporabljajo sistemizacijo dela in ugotavljali ustreznost zdajšnje sistemizacije dela pri določanju osnovne plače ter organizaciji dela. Naša ključna zamisel je, da mora tudi sistemizacija postati proces, tako kot organizacijski procesi, ki jih spremlja. To zamisel smo preverili pri kadrovskih strokovnjakih v podjetjih in dobili naslednje ključne rezultate: - sodobna sistemizacija dela bi morala izhajati iz lastnosti zaposlenega namesto iz sistema, - vsakdo je lahko sam kreator svoje sistemizacije dela (pod nadzorom vodje), - sistemizacija dela mora postati proces namesto statičen dokument, ki zapoznelo sledi spremembam v strukturi in vsebini dela, - plača zaposlenega je lahko oblikovana na podlagi zmnožka med efektivnimi urami dela in faktorjem zahtevnosti aktivnosti ob zagotovilu plače po pogodbi. Na tej osnovi smo izdelali model sistemizacije dela kot procesa, s katerim lahko oblikujemo plačo zaposlenega na podlagi efektivnega dela, zahtevnosti in kakovosti opravljenega dela in organiziramo delo na podlagi kompetenc zaposlenih.

Dissertation to obtain the degree of Master in Music - Artistic Interpretation

The purpose of this work was to examine the ideas about Western classical music. The main barrier for people at large to have a more multidimensional understanding of music, seems to be the objectification of music; i.e. that the music is generally understood as something complete, self-contained, something that can be defined, or even measured. Such knowledge, if isolated from the context of Western society, can lead to a limited understanding of music phenomenon. This dissertation suggests that the music may be understood as the living interface of various processes inside Western culture such as musical activity (e.g. composing, performing, listening), socio-cultural mentality (e.g. ways of thinking, education), the use of language, etc. An attempt was made to clarify the condition in which these processes influence each other. The dissertation aimed to explain the objectification of music in the contemporary music practice, and tried to find the roots and the contributors to such an understanding of music. Finally, the work explored the idea of transformation of the Western music culture by the social changes and technological innovations of the 20th and 21th centuries regarding the main question: has the mentioned transformation helped overcome the deterministic concept of ‘music as an object’? The conclusions could not offer an affirmative answer to this question. Adding to the theoretical basis of this dissertation, a series of interviews was conducted in order to investigate the subject’s perception of Western classical music. Many traces of the objectification of music have been found in the answers but, on the other hand, some answers served with a holistic, multidimensional view of music. The variety found in answers may suggest that the understanding of music is a very personal issue, what would explain why it is so hard to generalize it. Moreover, this work concludes with the though, that the objective understanding of music is practically impossible. The closest we might get to the objectivity in our understanding of music phenomenon is to investigate music in a social context, and allow oneself to take into account the diversified thoughts on music, coming from the personal musical experience.

▼ Because of the highly contested nature of the contexts of teaching, polarization has increased. Some dichotomies have been interpreted as gaps between theory and practice; as incompatibilities between the roles of a teacher as a learner and a teacher as an expert; as bifurcations between the images of teacher-as-curriculum-implementer and teacher-as-a-curriculum maker (Clandinin & Connelly, 1992; Craig & Ross, 2008) and as differences in methodological approaches and ethical considerations between research conducted on teachers and research conducted with teachers and so forth. Scholarly work by Dewey (1938), Schwab (1969), Eisner (1985), Jackson (1968), Clandinin and Connelly (Clandinin & Connelly, 1995), enabled me to bridge some of these dichotomies through the use of narrative inquiry. In my study, I focus on the beginning teachers’ narratives as they transition from preservice to in-service teaching with an emphasis placed on their developing knowledge and identities. My research relationship with my participants, who are based in India, began three years ago when they were in the final year of their teacher education program. I have continued to engage them in personal communications as they have transitioned to teaching in the school. Using the methodology of narrative inquiry (Connelly & Clandinin, 1990; Clandinin & Connelly, 2000), which involved in-depth interviews, casual conversations and artifacts shared, I came to understand nuanced changes in their knowledge and identities. Through their telling and re-telling of educational experiences, they implicated the complex nexus of their personal and professional selves. Their personal stories to live by (Clandinin & Connelly, 1998) continue to influence their professional stories in the classrooms. As beginning teachers, their rich narrative accounts present their attempts at enacting relational and critical pedagogy in their practice. This research contributes to the discourse on teacher education programs, preservice teachers, and beginning teachers. Attending to ways beginning teachers make sense of their transitions from preservice to in-service and their selves in the midst of it all, opens possibilities for teacher education curriculum development and enactment in a manner that is inclusive of teacher’s stories. This inquiry locates teacher’s developing knowledge and identities in a manner that it is comprehensible, collaborative and leads to a discourse around practices of teaching. It acknowledges the narrative self-in-the-midst of a teacher’s professional enactments and portrayals, trying to bridge the dichotomies existing in teacher education and teaching. This inquiry makes openings for conversations about the importance of deep and guided reflections for teachers ensuring sustenance in their career. The study also acknowledges the value of space for self in ensuring teacher preparation towards inclusive and social just education. Advisors/Committee Members: Craig, Cheryl J. ▼ Þessi meistaraprófsritgerð er þýðing bókarinnar Disapperance of the Universe eftir Bandaríkjamanninn Gary Renard sem hlaut nafnið Hvarf heimsins á íslensku. Umrædd bók fjallar um hið óþýdda kennslurit A Course in Miracles (Námskeið í kraftaverkum), reynslu höfundar af lestri hennar og iðkun æfinga sem þar er að finna. Markmið æfinganna er að breyta viðhorfi, heimsmynd eða lífssýn lesandans, byggðri á ótta egósins, yfir í viðhorf og upplifun einhyggju. Ritgerðin er annars vegar þýðing á fyrri hluta bókarinnar, alls um tvö hundruð blaðsíður, og hins vegar greinargerð um þýðingu hennar. Greinargerðin fjallar um hugtökin sem koma fyrir í þýdda textanum, þýðingarferlið og svo kenningar þýðingafræðinnar. Í greinargerðinni er fjallað um þrjár bækur með ólíkum texta frá mismunandi tímum. Þessar bækur eru hið þýdda rit Hvarf heimsins, og tvö rit sem frumritið snýst um; áðurnefnt Námskeið í kraftaverkum og Tómasarguðspjall. Einnig er gerð heiðarleg tilraun til að varpa ljósi á eðli þessara rita og megin þemu þeirra sem eru einhyggja (e. non-duality) og tvíhyggja (e.duality). Svo skilja megi einhyggju betur er nokkru púðri eytt í að útskýra samsvörun sem þýðandi sér milli vedarita og Kraftaverkanámskeiðsins, en bæði eru rituð út frá einhyggju en nota mismunandi orðfæri og framsetningu. Þar sem einhyggja verður ekki skilin nema út frá reynslu af einingarvitund samkvæmt ritunum, þá er verið að ræða um eitthvað sem lesandinn getur í besta falli fengið vitsmunalega hugmynd um, og þyrfti að útvíkka þýðingafræði til að koma þekkingunni um einhyggju alla leið. Jafnframt sá þýðandi ástæðu til að gera grein fyrir lykilhugtökum sem koma fyrir í Biblíunni en eru skilgreind á annan hátt í Kraftaverkanámskeiðinu og Hvarfi heimsins. Þessar þrjár bækur eiga það sameiginlegt að vera leiðbeining á sviði hugans, á sviði huglægra viðhorfa og varða ekki leiðbeiningar um hvernig skuli lifa veraldlegu, hvað þá daglegu, lífi. Þetta er mikilvægt atriði og var leiðarljós við val á hugtökum eins og lýst er í greinargerðinni. Lykilorð: Guð, heilagur andi, himnaríki, egó, synd, fyrirgefning, einhyggja, tvíhyggja.

▼ The output of this research was a framework that informs the adoption of Software as a Service (SaaS) for Small and middle-sized businesses (SMEs). Recent research has shown that there are significant advantages of SaaS when adopted by SMEs. However, there is a knowledge gap as pertains to the understanding of the factors that influence the effective adoption of SaaS in SMEs. More so, specific to Kenya, where firstly, there is a big disconnect between the popular and scholarly discussion about SaaS for SMEs leading to limited and inadequate access to relatable information in this regard. Secondly, existing adoption models are not contextualized for developing countries. The research then proposed a conceptual framework of how SMEs' could adoption SaaS. To better facilitate a relatable and contextualized SaaS adoption model, To develop this framework the researcher employed three approaches; the first approach was to conduct a preliminary empirical study involving 6 Cloud providers and 25 SMEs in Nairobi County. The second approach involved a critical review of literature pertaining to studies on SaaS adoption of SMEs. The final approach was a critical review of an existing framework, Technology Organization and Environmental framework (TOE). These three approaches informed the design of the framework developed by this research. The conceptual framework developed was an extension of TOE, which has fourteen exogenous variables and four moderating variables. The exogenous variables were Awareness, Trust, Cost, Top management support, Trialability, Complexity, Compatibility, Uncertainty, Relative advantage, ICT Services level, Dealer labors and outdoor calculating provision, Competitive pressure, Prior IT experience, Innovativeness and moderating factors which include SME Firm Size I.e. Small Medium, Age of the SME, SME Sector and SME Market Scope ie Local Regional. The exogenous variables were complex constructs that needed to be operationalized using multiple measures. The researcher then developed a criterion that led to SaaS adoption for SMEs for investigation. The research approach used was a cross-sectional approach because there was more emphasis on the impact of each specific construct and variable. Data provided by the Nairobi County Government SME licensing section, enhanced a comprehensive cluster sampling technique. A cluster sampling method was used to inaugurate the identified defendants. The author investigated SMEs in deferent sectors on a weighting proposal. This target was 87% in excess of the required minimum of 200 respondents as required by Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). However 293 respondents were obtained, which was significantly above the minimum requirement. SEM was used to test multifaceted associations amongst unrushed and latent variables. ▼ This dissertation investigates the theory of quantum stochastic processes and its applications in quantum many-body physics. The main goal is to analyse complexity-theoretic aspects of both static and dynamic properties of physical systems modelled by quantum stochastic processes. The thesis consists of two parts: the first one addresses the computational complexity of certain quantum and classical divisibility questions, whereas the second one addresses the topic of Hamiltonian complexity theory. In the divisibility part, we discuss the question whether one can efficiently sub-divide a map describing the evolution of a system in a noisy environment, i.e. a CPTP- or stochastic map for quantum and classical processes, respectively, and we prove that taking the nth root of a CPTP or stochastic map is an NP-complete problem. Furthermore, we show that answering the question whether one can divide up a random variable X into a sum of n iid random variables Y_i, i.e. X=∑_i=1ⁿ Y_i, is poly-time computable; relaxing the iid condition renders the problem NP-hard. In the local Hamiltonian part, we study computation embedded into the ground state of a many-body quantum system, going beyond "history state" constructions with a linear clock. We first develop a series of mathematical techniques which allow us to study the energy spectrum of the resulting Hamiltonian, and extend classical string rewriting to the quantum setting. This allows us to construct the most physically-realistic QMAEXP-complete instances for the LOCAL HAMILTONIAN problem (i.e. the question of estimating the ground state energy of a quantum many-body system) known to date, both in one- and three dimensions. Furthermore, we study weighted versions of linear history state constructions, allowing us to obtain tight lower and upper bounds on the promise gap of the LOCAL HAMILTONIAN problem in various cases. We finally study a classical embedding of a Busy Beaver Turing Machine into a low-dimensional lattice spin model, which allows us to dictate a transition from a purely classical phase to a Toric Code phase at arbitrarily large and potentially even uncomputable system sizes.

This project explored aspects of English-related out-of-class time use by Japanese university students. The aim was to identify the salient temporal and motivational features of the episodes. The study had three parts, two longitudinal components and one cross-sectional component. Data from these three components consisted of out-of-class English time use information collected through a time diary (8,838 episodes). The episode data was collected from longitudinal study participants (n = 125) and cross-sectional study participants (n = 642) who maintained the time diary for at least one week. Data also include interviews with longitudinal participants (n = 40) about their time use and motivation and motivational information collected through an L2 motivational self system survey administered to cross-sectional study participants (n = 1,399) that was modeled after the survey developed by Taguchi, Magid, and Papi (2009). Two sets of time use and interview data were collected longitudinally (one semester per dataset) through Longitudinal Study 1 (ninitial = 66, nfinal = 15), which included participants from three universities in Western Japan, followed by Longitudinal Study 2 (ninitial = 59, nfinal = 25), which included participants from two universities in Western Japan. Interviews were with participants from these studies. Participants maintained a record of their out-of-class English-related time use during the semester. These data provide an overview of the out-of-class time use of Japanese university students during a full Japanese academic year. Longitudinal Study 1 data were collected during the fall semester, the second term at Japanese universities. Longitudinal Study 2 data were collected during the spring term, the initial term. Longitudinal Study 1 participants reported 2,529 episodes and Longitudinal Study 2 participants reported 3,322 episodes of out-of-class English access during the study period. One interview was held with the Longitudinal Study 1 participants (n = 15), at the end of fall semester. Two interviews were held with Longitudinal Study 2 participants (n = 25), one during the term and one following summer holiday. Data were examined for their temporal patterns and the contextual and affective features of the time use episodes. The cross-sectional component collected data from participants (n = 1,399) at 11 universities in Western Japan. These participants provided data for the motivational survey (n = 1,399) and at least one week of out-of-class English time use (n = 642) data. The participants in the cross-sectional study reported 2,987 out-of-class English access episodes. Episode data for all three components (K = 8,838) and the motivational survey data (n = 1,399) were analyzed at the person, group, and amalgamated episode levels for the patterns of participants' time use using ANOVA and nonparametric procedures. ▼ This study explores the dynamics of neighbourhood renewal to understand the actualities, potentials, and barriers for urban renewal to be a site for engaging in emancipatory social change locally and extra locally. The purpose is to assess the potential of neighbourhood renewal as an opportunity structure for creating counterhegemonic forms of urbanism (see Purcell, 2009, 2013) and to identify strategies to strengthen those potentials. These possibilities involve the transformation of social, political, and economic structures in ways that nurture local democracy/self-management, social inclusion, and collective ownership of property and businesses. To examine neighbourhoods in this way I develop the concept of critical urban renewal (CUR) to describe the possibilities of how neighbourhoods can be shaped to achieve those ends. The second part of the study presents a case study of the Old East Village (OEV) - a post-industrial revitalizing neighbourhood in London, Ontario - to examine the actualities of how CUR is present or repressed within the local neighbourhood renewal context. The case study draws on multiple sources of data including: 14 interviews with organizational representatives active in OEV, 36 interviews with residents of the neighbourhood who volunteer in the community in various ways, and public records including media reports, neighbourhood planning documents, meeting minutes, and local histories. The goal of this case study is to provide a model for research that can be conducted in other neighbourhood renewal projects to identify strategies for organizing toward CUR. It also provides insight into the urban renewal context at the local and extra-local levels with attention to how the relationship between capital, the state, and the community function to nurture or constrain the capacity for CUR practices. Overall, this study shows that even in a neighbourhood such as OEV where features of CUR are present it is difficult to keep CUR principles at the center of neighbourhood renewal. As an alternative approach to urban renewal, CUR requires intentional organizing from the grass-roots as well as from state actors. If the logic of capital is not actively controlled within urban renewal processes it is inevitably going to transform urban space into its own image defining community and justice within its confines.

▼ In this doctoral dissertation, I explore the relationship between beginning Core French (CF) teachers’ beliefs about Core French teaching and their instructional practices. As a former teacher educator, one of my principle preoccupations was the challenge faced by many of my Core French teacher candidates (TCs) to enact practices aligned with their beliefs. In order to explore this topic, I gathered data via an on-line questionnaire on the beliefs and declared practices of 47 Core French teachers in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). By means of in-class observations, I collected detailed information on the actual practices of 13 Core French teachers, nine beginning and four experienced for comparison. In addition, I interviewed these 13 teachers to assess their impressions of their teaching. In the literature, conflict or incompatibility between teacher beliefs and non-traditional second language teaching approaches, such as a communicative approach, are regularly cited as a key factor contributing to discrepancy between beliefs and practices. However, the incompatibility of beliefs and practices did not in my view adequately explain what I had witnessed as a teacher educator. In analyzing my data through the lens of a hybrid framework of complexity theory and Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy, I found teachers’ ability to handle periods of chaos, which almost inevitably accompany the introduction of a new instructional approach, to be the key factor contributing to discrepancies between beliefs and practices. Moreover, teacher levels of self-efficacy had important implications for how teachers viewed and navigated the chaos. Participants with a high degree of self-efficacy viewed and navigated the chaos quite differently than participants with a low degree of self-efficacy. Findings also show important differences in outcome (e.g., teacher and student use of the target language) in classes taught by teachers with a high degree of self-efficacy versus those with lower levels of self-efficacy. En tant qu'ancienne formatrice d'enseignants de FLS, une de mes préoccupations principales c'était d'aider mes étudiants à assurer une convergence entre leurs croyances et leurs pratiques. ▼ A detection and identification scheme for abnormal conditions was developed for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based on the artificial immune system (AIS) paradigm. This technique involves establishing a body of data to represent normal conditions referred to as “self” and differentiating these conditions from abnormal conditions, referred to as “non-self”. Data collected from simulation of the UAV attempting to autonomously fly a pre-decided trajectory were used to develop and test a scheme that was able to detect and identify aircraft sensor and actuator faults. These faults included aerodynamic control surface locks and damages and angular rate sensor biases. The method used to create the AIS is known as the partition of the universe approach. This approach differs from standard clustering approaches because the universe is divided into uniform partition clusters rather than clustering data using some clustering algorithm. It is simpler and requires less computational resources. This will be the first time that this approach has been applied for use in aerospace engineering. Data collected from nominal flights were used to define self partitions, and the non-self partitions were defined implicitly. The creation scheme is also discussed, involving all software used for simulation, as well as the process of creating the self and the logic behind the detection and identification schemes. The detection scheme was evaluated based on detection rate, detection time, and false alarms for flights under both normal and abnormal conditions. The failure identification scheme was assessed in terms of identification rate and time. Investigation of the proposed technique showed promising results for the cases explored with comparable performance with respect to clustering-based approaches and motivates further research and extension of the proposed methodology toward a more complete health management system. ▼ Complexity of a system grows as more functionality is required by customers and more unintended component interactions are added to the system by designers as they make design decisions. The increasing level of both intended and unintended complexity of systems has made it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for designers to ensure reliability of, and instill adaptability into, their designed systems. As demands for adaptive systems increase in areas such as space and ocean exploration and rescue and military missions, how to guarantee reliability and increase flexibility and/or adaptability of complex engineered systems is a major challenge. While research in biological systems has advanced our understanding of how these systems have been designed and developed and revealed their fundamental properties of adaptation through morphogenesis, there has been little research in exploiting the biological design process for the development of engineered flexible and/or adaptive systems. A new engineering approach is needed that can overcome the limitations of conventional design methods by applying the concepts and processes found in the development of biological systems. ❧ In this dissertation, we develop a framework for understanding the limitations of the conventional design process for designing complex adaptive systems. Based on the previous work on mechanical cell (mCell) based system formation, we propose a novel biology inspired system representation called Behavior-based design DNA (B-dDNA) for the development and operation of our Cellular Self-organizing Systems, or CSO systems for short. Based on the B-dDNA representation, a mechanism called Field driven Behavioral Regulation (FBR) is proposed that implements and synthesizes system Designing, Formation, Operation, and Adaptation processes. FBR of a CSO system is a mathematical and selection model that is shared by all mCells and specifies cellular behaviors corresponding to functional, system level, operational and adaptation requirements. Our research results have demonstrated the feasibility and advantages of the B-dDNA representation and FBR based mechanisms. Two case studies along with more detailed computer simulations are provided to demonstrate the power of B-dDNA and FBR for designing and developing complex engineered adaptive systems that possess inherent capabilities to cope with increasing level of system complexities and to exhibit high level flexibility/adaptability in response to both task and environmental changes that occur in mission situations. ▼ Предмет истраживања дисертације је развој модела електронског пословања заснованог на флексибилном учешћу потрошача на српском тржишту електричне енергије. Циљ је развoj одрживoг и применљивoг моделa електронског пословања који омогућава учешће домаћинстава и појединачних уређаја на балансном тржишту и на берзи електричне енергије коришћењем smart grid технологија и demand-response сервиса. Учествовањем појединачних домаћинстава и уређаја у балансном тржишту омогућава се прецизна контрола фреквенције електроенергетског система, што oтвара могућности за експлоатацију обновљивих извора електричне енергије преко флексибилнијег и тачнијег управљања флуктуацијама. Tржиштa електричне енергије традиционално функционишу по B2B моделу електронског пословања где се пословање врши искључиво између произвођача и оператора тржишта. Дерегулација отвара нове могућности пословања за тржишта електричне енергије, претежно за домаћинства чијом се инклузијом у великој мери може повећати флексибилност и ефикасност механизма балансирања и целокупна стабилност електроенергетске мреже. Пословни модел предложен у овој дисертацији прилагођен је пословном окружењу и регулативи у Републици Србији. Subjects/Keywords: The subject of this thesis is the development of an e-business model based on flexible participation of households in the Serbian energy market. The goal is the development of a sustainable and suitable e-business model that enables households as well as individual devices to participate in the balancing market as well as the energy exchange through the use of smart grid concepts and demand response technologies. By enabling the participation of individual households in the balancing market; a new mechanism for frequency control of energy grids is possible; which allows for the future adoption of renewables. Energy markets are traditionally B2B e-business models; which facilitate for business processes between the energy producers and the system operators. With the deregulation of energy markets; new ways of doing business are becoming possible; primarily for households for whom the participation in the market allows for greater flexibility and efficiency in the balancing mechanism and the potential to improve the stability of the energy grid as a whole. The business model proposed in this dissertation is based on the business rules as well as regulations that are currently in place in the Republic of Serbia. The implementation of the technical segment of the model is based on the design of a distributed infrastructure for the coordination of a large number of individual users and devices with the goal of providing demand response services to the energy market. Business intelligence tools; as well as analytical models; will be used for the purpose of data extraction and analysis as well as to manage the system in real time. The advantage of the proposed model is in the fact that it is adapted for energy markets that are still in development; as well as its capability to adapt to new technological trends and its integration with smart grid technologies. The dissertation gives the analysis of readiness of customers and market participants for the application of the propsed model.

▼ In spite of agriculture being an important source of income growth and a potential source of investment opportunities in Kenya, farmers face numerous production risks including climate variability and change. Whilst traditionally farmers have historically devised a diverse portfolio of risk avoidance and reduction mechanisms such as reduced input application, use of drought resistant varieties and diversification of crop or income portfolio to self-insure against agricultural risks, a pool of research show that traditional risk minimization strategies are unfavorable to some extent and that cannot adequately absorb the resultant economic shocks hence this can lead to poverty trap. Literature suggests that crop insurance as a risk management tool has the potential to unlock other key services in the agricultural sector that are important in enhancing productivity. This study sought to assess effectiveness of agriculture insurance among large scale farmers in Kenya with view of linking to performance as opposed to non-insurance. This paper analyzed the actual impact of insurance products on the economic performance of maize farmers by linking the economic performance model with the insurance demand model. For this analysis, a simultaneous equation system is solved. Agricultural insurance schemes are a potential tool to cope with income losses through indemnity payments and therefore stabilize income and economic performance of farms. Data was collected from 30 maize-producing farmers in Kesses county where maize is cash crop to many farmers among other counties in Kenya. Purposive statistics results show that agriculture insurance uptake is very low but the few farmers who have insured gain more than those who have not insured. Agriculture insurance is also not well understood by farmers and therefore the uptake is low. The insured farmers have indeed gained and maintain their income in spite of loss occurrences as opposed to uninsured farmers. The finding therefore shows that farmers with insurance in place as risk mitigation tool perform better that those with other forms of loss mitigation tools. Famers are therefore encouraged to take up agriculture insurance to maintain their production for consistency of income

▼ The work of James Joyce (1882-1941) discussed in this research, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, published in 1916, tells the story of Stephen Dedalus, in the period of time that goes from his childhood to early adulthood. It is from the perspective of the evolution of the text along with the character that we propose a study of the novel as a genre differentiated in the treatment of the category of time. We set out to analyze how the language developed by the author allows the creation of a linguistic layer for the development of the character and the category of time throughout the narrative, allowing the sharing of a temporal experience from the language. We will also analyze how the language is used to develop the theme of character's rebellion, which is also observed in the linguistic structure of the novel. We carry out this research in A Portrait from the theoretical underpinning of authors such as Ricoeur (1995), Bakhtin (2010), Benjamin (2011), Lukács (2007), Mendilow (1972), Genette (1995), among others. We also discuss the narrator-character interaction and its influence on narrative evolution, based on Candido (2007) and Auerbach (2002) theoretical background. Our proposal first depicts a study on the romanesque characteristics that make of the category of time an essential element to the form of the novel. We next deal with the way language embodies a reconfiguration of temporal experience in the linguistic structure of the novel. We conclude that in order to configure the time within the language, the author uses literary resources such as the relationship between the narrator and character, which can be seen in the manipulation of the point of view, the possibility of uniting the speech of the narrator to the words of the character through a hybrid language, the use of tools such as the repetition or the exploration of the levels of the character's consciousness by its language and the adaptation of narrative styles and patterns corresponding to each stage of the life of the character, causing its evolution to be felt, not just stated, in the linguistic experience of reading.
