▼ Since 2008, the foreign direct investment (FDI) as a share of GDP has largely declined in
Taiwan from 1.3% in 2008 to 0.46% in 2015. This paper studies the macroeconomic effects of FDI fluctuations in
Taiwan, using a small-open dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) model. It finds that when FDI as a share of GDP decline by 0.28 percentage points, the impact output falls by 1%. If such a decline become permanent, output declines by 0.3% in the new steady state relative to the steady state without such a decline. When FDI has a bigger spillover effect on technology in the exporting sector, the negative macroeconomic effects on output, consumpution, investment and income are amplified. Quantitative analysis finds that the decline of FDI from 2008 to 2016 leads to an average decrease of output by 0.08% per year.

▼ Thirty-five species of chaetognaths belonging to fourteen genera and four families were identified in the waters of southwestern
Taiwan from July 2009 to April 2010. In surface tows, thirty-five species of chaetognaths belonging to fourteen genera and four families were found, with mean abundance of 2911 ± 586 ind./ 100m3; in oblique tows, thirty species of chaetognaths belonging to fourteen genera and four families were identified, with mean abundance of 3180 ± 532 ind./ 100m3. The five predominant species were Flaccisagitta enflata, Aidanosagitta regularis, A. neglecta, A. delicate and Serratosagitta pacifica, together they constituted 72 % of the total catch. The hydrographic conditions in the waters southwestern
Taiwan were affected by seasonal monsoons and water masses. Higher temperature, lower salinity, and higher nutrient concentration were found in summer, and lower temperature, higher salinity, and lower nutrient concentration in winter. Generally higher abundance of chaetognath was found in summer and in inshore waters, and lower in spring and in offshore waters. Furthermore, the abundance of chaetognath showed significantly positive correlation with copepods, but no significant correlation with temperature and salinity. The predominant chaetognaths were mostly stage I (47 ~ 89 %), adult stage(>stage III) was mainly found in April. The average body lengths (ABL) of Fl. enflata, A. regularis, A. delicate and Se. pacifica were larger in spring than in summer, while the ABL of A. neglecta exhibited larger in winter than in summer and autumn. This study implies that the distribution of weight mean stage (WMS) and ABL of chaetognath were likely influenced by the water masses, because the ABL of Fl. enflata and WMS of Se. pacifica were larger in high salinity waters, furthermore, this study found that the seasonal moonsons and the succession of water masses maybe played important factors in the distribution patterns of chaetognaths.

▼ The past study of
Taiwan 's seclusion culture, most of them are about personal and individual poems. There is no comprehensive study of
Taiwan's seclusion culture. This study analyzes
Taiwan during the Qing Dynasty, from 1683 to 1895. The material of this research including all the poems about the seclusion theme, written by the literators who lived or born in
Taiwan.
This study sort out the classical poems of
Taiwan, analyze the seclusion psychology represented by them, and classify them by the typical literary space. When Taiwanese scholars at home, in the gardens, in the fields, in the mountains, in the temples, even in the dreams and fantasy . They always write poetry to express the idea of seclusion in those places. All these thoughts express the desires of seclusion in their hearts.
This study starts from the seclusion culture of China, and demonstrates that the seclusion culture of
Taiwan is the continuation of the Chinese tradition. The study mentions that immigrants, assignment officials and local writers, they have different degrees to express their feelings in poems. Some people encounter turmoil, some encounter bad situations, and some want to live aloof. Otherwise, because of the traditional Chinese education and cultural influence,
Taiwan appeared a lot of seclusion poems.
Although the seclusion is a kind of evasive behavior, but also created a abundant culture. The Qing Dynasty period of
Taiwan had special environment and culture. Under the influence of Chinese culture, gradually forming a special, interesting, diverse seclusion culture, and that is the main purpose of this paper.

▼ This study outlines the importance of

economy. South
Africa is low in entrepreneurial activity when compared to other
developing countries. Considering South Africa‘s high poverty and
unemployment rates, retrenchments, downsizing of big businesses,
high failure rate among start-ups, and the valuable contribution
that effective entrepreneurship can make towards economic growth
and development. It becomes very important to determine how
entrepreneurship can be encouraged and promoted to yield the
desired results. The key lever to increasing the pool of
entrepreneurs is through education. The answer that is evident is
that entrepreneurship education should be taught in schools. The
South African curriculum has made provision for the teaching of
entrepreneurship from an early age. There is a widespread idea that
entrepreneurship education would generate more and better
entrepreneurs than there have been in the past and that education
would increase the chances of obtaining entrepreneurial success. To
achieve this, the study attempted to find out about the status of
the Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) teachers, whether they
have the necessary knowledge and skills to produce learners with an
entrepreneurial inclination or not. Again the study attempted to
find out whether teachers would like to be trained or not. The
results revealed that teachers do not have the necessary knowledge
and skills to implement the EMS Learning Area and need to be
trained. The study addresses the importance of training teachers in
EMS and the principles of entrepreneurship. The goal is to provide
teachers with the rationale, mindset, tools, skills and knowledge
needed to infuse the spirit of entrepreneurship into classrooms and
to expand entrepreneurial career options. Knowledgeable teachers
are needed to bridge the gap between the content on paper and the
actual transference of the entrepreneurial skills and attitude to
the learner in order to raise South Africa’s rate of
entrepreneurial activity. Education and training should be improved
so that the supply of people equipped to become entrepreneurs is
increased.

Abstract
After the establishment of air and sea transportation links between
Taiwan and
China, Penghu, which is geographically situated in the center of the cross-strait links
shall make good use of its transfer function, by taking advantage of its tax incentives
(duty-free) stipulated in "Offshore Island Development Act" and "Cross-strait Mini
Three Link Policy" to develop new industries that can satisfy the requirements of
"import consumption" and "export promotion." Penghu may foster closer economic
and trade ties between
Taiwan and Fujian Province, promote cross-strait tourism,
expand cultural exchange, and develop sustainable industries that are necessary for
continuing the economic prosperity.
This study was conducted by a team of three students using the interactive
management approach to tackle the main theme of regional cooperative strategies
between Penghu and the Mainland special economic zones on the west coast of
Taiwan Straits. The researchers looked into the sub-title issues from the economical,
social, and governmental aspects respectively. The theoretical framework of this study
was based on the public affairs management and research method – Interactive
Management (IM). To make the research results more comprehensive, the interactive
management approach was combined with two methods often used in framework
analysis: nominal group technology (NGT) and interpretative structure model (ISM).
Together with literature review, expert interviews and data collection methods, the
researchers gathered all relevant information about Penghu so as to provide a more
objective basis for exploring the strategic economic cooperation between Penghu and
the Mainland special economic zone on the west coast of
Taiwan Straits. To ensure
good progress in the panel discussion and anticipate fruitful results from discussions
of various sub-titles to turn into specific strategies, the interactive discussion seminar
invited local representatives in order to incorporate the views of the people in Penghu.
This information can provide reliable reference for the central government planning
units in their policy formulation process.
Using this approach can solve the problem of suspending issues whenever the
interactive management (IM) is used. The seminar was joined by 27 representatives
from all walks of life. The NGT process started from exposing the issues, clarifying
the issues, voting for the issues, to making paired comparisons, supplemented by ISM
software, and finally resulted in enhanced structural clearness and visually
understandable connectivity. After panel discussions over the structural charts,
appropriate revisions, and confirmation of a final version, 12 economic strategies
were produced from discussions of regional cooperation between Penghu and the
Mainland special economic zone on the west coast of the

Abstract
In this study, we (Wen-Chang Hsu, Chen-yu Wu and myself) analyzed possible
strategies for cooperation between Penghu and Chinaâs Economic Zone on the
Western Side of the
Taiwan Strait (SWZ) within the aspects of
economy, government
and society. The study is based on the public affairs management (PAM) framework.
Applying the interactive management (IM) method used from PAM policy analysis, as
well as the nominal group technique (NGT) method and the interpretive structural
modeling (ISM) method used for project analysis, interactive management seminars
were held with participants from industries, government, academic fields, peopleâs
representatives and media representatives.
The participants were engaged in sessions for idea generation, opinion writing
and recording onto panel papers on the wall. The sessions also included in-sequence
description and discussion to clear up problems, categorization of problems according
to fields, key problem voting, problem sorting by votes and fields, and problem
selection according to scores. The ISM method was then used to build and interpret
problematic structure, overlap problem areas, and generate an enforcement
structural diagram, which was reviewed and revised to come up with the strategic
analysis in the social aspect of âcooperation between Penghu and Chinaâs Economic
Zone on the Western Side of the
Taiwan Straitâ. Through clearing up the enforcement
relationship between each item, an enforced structural relationship diagram was
created to identify the priority and enhancement sequence of each policy in its
implementation, as well as the objectives and directions. Twelve strategies have been
identified as follows in our strategic analysis in the social aspect of âcooperation
between Penghu and Chinaâs Economic Zone on the Western Side of the
Taiwan
Straitâ. They are: 1.Establishment of communication between the two sides and a
mechanism for handling disputes over civil and commercial matters, as well as fishing
disputes, arising after intensive cross-strait exchanges, in order to achieve the purpose
of rapid processing; a civil communication mechanism and civil or arbitration system
can be relied on to rapidly deal with the issues in a professional manner before a
general-purpose processing mechanism is established; 2.With consensual support of
the majority of county people, effort should be spent in getting the central
governmentâs consent for setting Penghu as the sole gaming district and in
formulating a concrete plan for improving the competitiveness of Penghu; 3.The local
government should extensively accept the views of non-governmental organizations
to develop viable and effective business strategy, and to proactively win the central
governmentâs recognition in placing emphasis upon further development of
infrastructure to enhance the people's livelihood and to improve on the competitive
business environment in…

▼ The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between spatial distribution of larval fish assemblage and local hydrographic characteristics during two distinct monsoon seasons (the southwesternly monsoon in summer and the northeasternly monsoon in winter) in the waters southwest of
Taiwan. We used the cruises of âR/V Ocean Researcher IIIâ to collect zooplankton and hydrographic data in September and December, 2012. Succession of the water masses (South China Sea Surface Current in summer and Kuroshio Branch Current in winter) driven by monsoons may strongly influence the local hydrographic characteristics, such as the sea-surface temperature, salinity, and SiO2. In total, 123 taxa of larval fish, belonging to 79 genera and 56 families, were identified, with a mean abundance of 1510 ± 382 ind./1000 m3 during the study period. Among these, a total of 78 taxa of larval fish belonging to 43 genera and 32 families with a mean abundance of 990 ± 382 ind./1000 m3 were found in summer, and 107 taxa, 61 genera and 48 families with mean abundance of 2034 ± 602 ind./1000 m3 in winter. The families and species number were significantly higher in winter than in summer. Although the abundance of larval fish in the winter was higher than that in the summer, no significant difference was observed. The five predominant taxa of larval fish found in this study area were Diaphus A group, Engraulis japonicus, Equulites rivulatus, Bregmaceros sp., and Benthosema pterotum, together they accounted for 37.67% of the total larval fish catch. Seasonal variation in the species composition of larval fish was significant, some taxa only occurred with a peak abundance in a specific season. For example, Engraulis japonicus, Sillago sihama, Pennahia argentata, Equulites rivulatus, and unidentified Engraulidae dominated in summer, while Diaphus A group, Bregmaceros sp., Equulites rivulatus, Benthosema pterotum, and Engraulis japonicus were abundant in the winter. According to the results of this study, we suggested that the succession of the water masses driven by seasonal monsoon system may affect the distribution of larval fish in the waters southwest of
Taiwan.

▼ The purpose of this thesis is to examine the image of Western art in
Taiwan with a focus on the Chimei Museum (*1990). Motivated by the recent trend for acquiring and displaying Western works of art in East Asia, I concentrate on the Taiwanese response in an attempt to bridge academic gaps in interpreting how East Asia reacts to Western culture. On the one hand, Taiwanese art collecting and exhibiting has definitely mirrored the cultural environment in East Asia as it was one of the earliest international art markets in post-war East Asia (*1945). On the other hand, having been colonized by the Japanese who introduced their westernization strategies (1895-1945) and then with a fresh injection of Chinese culture as the seat of the Republic of China (*1945, post-war period), the Taiwanese public's impression of Western art provides a copybook example of how the Western aesthetics were constructed under Japanese, Chinese and local Taiwanese rules.
The Chimei Museum is an exemplification of the introduction of Western art in modern
Taiwan. As a private museum, the educational background of its founder, Xu Wen Long (許文龍, *1928), who was brought up under Japanese rule, marks the initial point of entry of Western aesthetics into the colonized society. During her directorship of the Chimei Museum in the late 1990s, Xu's successor, Kuo Ling Ling (郭玲玲, *1956), has shown a new attitude toward appreciating Western art in post-war
Taiwan. Taking the perspectives of collecting and museum culture as the starting point, my analysis of the Chimei Museum hopes to provide a pioneering discussion about the general Taiwanese reception of Western art.

▼ The growth of scientific technology and world
economy progress prosperously. On the contrary, in the developed countries, the fertility rate regresses universally. In recently 20 yrs, the fertility rate of
Taiwan is also decreasing, too. Twenty yrs ago, the fertility rate of
Taiwan people was 2.0 and the trend was going lower and lower. In 2003, it was reported the total fertility rate in
Taiwan decreased to 1.2, just a little higher than that of Hong Kang and Macau, 0.9.
In
Taiwan, the government health care insurance is the major source of the income of the medical care providers. But due to budget of the government, the health care payment is getting lower. Since there is no extra-payment for the four major subjects of internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, obstetrics, and pediatrics, it blocks the inflow of the man power into these subjects. Medical human resources become worse and worse under this circumstances.
Medical relationship between doctors and patients is also going down. Risk of legal problem among these subjects of medical providers stays high and increases at high speed in these years. Medical dispute of gynecology and obstetrics is about 15% of all. Among them, 80% is criminal action. The average ratio of medical dispute is around 0.18 to every doctor, but 0.51 to gynecological and obstetric doctors. It means that there is 2.8 fold of medical dispute especially to gynecological and obstetric doctor.
Long working hours, less payment, short of human power and high risk of medical dispute make the gynecology and obstetrics a sunset industry.
The Lucina women and children hospital upgrades the traditional thinking of the medical providers, focus on medical care and also on patient human care. With focusing on medical profession and scientific management, education of human resource, supply chain management, marketing
economy, marketing management, we strengthened the hard ware of our equipment, also improved our professional medical care, with our considerable service and outstanding soft power, put ourselves at the top of this profession.
Based on the performance of the Lucina women and children hospital, We tried to organize it into a model of the best practice. In the near future, firstly, we will organized the horizontal integration with merging the gynecological and obstetric clinics in Kaohsiung to maximize the numbers of the patients and increase the ability of price negotiation with our supply chains, and next step forward to vertical the integration with other medical clinics to organize an ideal professional medical service web. Finally, based on the medical service web, I will multiply the model to mainland China and also fulfill the social responsibility to feedback to the society.

▼ In this paper I start from the exploration of the change of industrial structure during the economic development in
Taiwan after World War II. Through the document analysis, I find out the reasons why the manufacture and service industries move outside to mainland China and other areas around the world are because of the extension of market and the cut down of cost. Since China is the most important trade partner of
Taiwan, I focus the study on the economic zones in China, especially the economic zone of West Coast of
Taiwan Strait (West Coast economic zone).
The argument of this paper is that
Taiwan should take advantage of the favor policy of economic zones in China and build the supply chain in the certain economic zones with local comparative advantage industries. And the evaluation of Taiwanâs economic strategy depends on which economic zone in China can offer the supply chain advantage industries with the need of Taiwanâs industries.
After the comparison of the current trends of the investment of Taiwanese businessmen in West Coast economic zone and other economic zones in mainland China, I find out West Coast economic zone is not Taiwanese businessmenâs best choice to invest. To attract more investments from
Taiwan, the authority of West Coast economic zone should alter its favor policy according to co-opettion strategy and to meet the need of
Taiwan industries.
In conclusion, I suggest the authorities on both side of
Taiwan strait should offer the need of local comparative advantage industries according to the supply chain theory, by this way, we can get a win-win result for the both side of
Taiwan Strait.

▼ As a successful third-wave democracy in East Asia, why did Taiwan’s press freedom improve along with democratization in the 1990s but instead deteriorate after the second peaceful turnover of power in 2008 which symbolized democratic consolidation? Considering the liberal view in international relations, why did Taiwan’s press freedom make significant improvements accompanying Taiwan’s close economic connections with the US during the Cold War, only to become eroded when Taiwan recently developed deeper economic ties with China? This study offers a political economy explanation of the development and degradation of freedom of the press in Taiwan from 1949 through 2015 from both international and domestic perspectives. At the international level, it argues that a state’s press freedom should improve or deteriorate, when it depends economically on a liberal or repressive hegemon. Material self-interest and norm diffusion are proposed as the causal mechanisms to connect economic dependence to the degree of press freedom. At the domestic level, the argument is that a state tends to have a low or high level of press freedom, when its government plays a more or less interventionist role in the market economy. State control and market co-optation are proposed as the mechanisms to establish the causal linkages between the state’s economic role and the level of media freedom. With archival and interview data gathered in Taiwan, historical institutionalism has been adopted as the analytical approach and both multiple within-case comparisons and process tracing as the research methods to investigate the case of Taiwan. Filling the gaps within existing scholarship, the case study supports the proposed theory and implies that 1) state power is not the only threat to freedom of the press, but corporate organizations and market forces may also play a role in curtailing or circumscribing it, 2) cross-national economic connections do not always benefit domestic practice regarding human and civil rights, but may cause damage to it on occasions when relations of economic interdependence involve more powerful authoritarian countries, and 3) norms may not only diffuse from liberal contexts to repressive states, but repressive norms are also likely to diffuse from more powerful authoritarian countries to more liberal but politically and economically weaker countries via the mechanism of transnational corporations.Given the growing concerns about the potential impacts that China’s economic rise might have on human rights and democracy around the world, this study especially deserves attention from democratic countries which have increasing economic linkages with China.

▼ The present project provides a survey of contemporary work relations in the context of the so-called gig
economy (also known as the sharing, collaborative, platform, and ondemand
economy). Against the background of recent concerns over automation replacing work at a large scale, the project argues instead that the displacement of work warrants more critical attention. The project examines how the gig
economy presents their services as automating technologies while downplaying the ways that workers’ employment, not to mention lives, are made increasingly precarious by these alleged improvements. Specifically, the project surveys three gig economies, the ride-hailing service Uber, the home-sharing service Airbnb, and the online labor marketplace Amazon Mechanical Turk (AMT). Methodologically, the project employs an interdisciplinary approach, integrating insights from political
economy, critical theory, discourse analysis, and ethnographic research. A qualitative assessment of the respective work environments shifts a relatively apolitical discourse on the future of work not only toward a more pronounced critique of the gig
economy, but also toward a renewed discussion on the kinds of jobs that earn the labels of freelance and entrepreneurship. Professionals and scholars concerned with the future of work stand to benefit from the findings of the research, particularly as it challenges some commonplace assumptions in the discourse of what has been termed postcapitalism.

This dissertation explores Commerce, politics, and colonization in Angola at the turn of the eighteenth century. The work will discuss these topics through three main chapters that are spatially divided into the Angolan hinterland, the coastal region, and the Atlantic through the Angolan perspective. Separating the work into distinct geographical and conceptual boundaries makes it possible to discern the interconnectivity as well as the interdependency of Angola as an aggregate of the three geographical areas and Portuguese colonial forces. Making these important connections provides the means through which the way that these colonial processes transformed can be identified.
The first chapter focuses on politics and colonization in the Angolan hinterland. It discusses methods of colonization and introduces political and commercial actors that are relevant in following chapters. The second chapter discusses the Angolan commercial structure on the coast, and its inherent connection to the hinterland and politics in the territory. The first two chapters set the stage through introducing major themes and characters that permit the disquisition to reach the Atlantic sphere in the final chapter. Here, the Angolan slave trade will serve to evince the manner in which events that occurred in Angola and in Brazil mutually impacted each other, and as a result, the hinterland and coastal merchants. This will be done through discussing the ideologies of slavery and Atlantic History that allow a deeper understanding of the parameters through which the slave trade can be studied as well as how Angola was deeply affected by isolated events that produced processes of change. The overarching thesis that this dissertation intends to prove is that politics, commerce, and colonization in Angola were intrinsically connected through economic motives that incited a period of transformation at the turn of the eighteenth century.

▼ This thesis is concerned with the rise of independent booksellers in China since the late 2000s. Drawing on the findings of a qualitative study I conducted with 55 independent booksellers between 2014 and 2015, I argue that independent bookselling in China is an economic activity politicized, and the emergence and development of independent booksellers has been a process shaped by both economic and socio-political factors stemming from both inside and outside the book industry. Studying independent bookselling, a significant change in the Chinese book industry in recent years, my thesis advances our understanding of the transformation of the book industry in China. The notion of ‘politicization’ provides a useful analytical framework for understanding bookselling and publishing in parallel contexts. Finally, by elucidating the distinctive relationship between the evolution of the book industry and some wider social, political and economic processes in China, my thesis adds to the political economy of the media industry in non-Western societies and contributes to the de-Westernization of this long-dominant and yet problematic approach to the study of the media and media industries.

▼ This research contributes to the evolving field of New Media Studies through an empirical examination of social media design in real-time practice at the computer interface. In recent years questions of technology and design have started to figure more prominently in research into Social Network Sites (SNSs) but critical analysis of design in practice, at the interface remains under-researched. The interface is becoming an increasingly important analytical concept in the digital age as it is the space where machine readable code is translated into the cultural codes which are accessible to the everyday users of digital media technology. Furthermore, there have been recent calls for an expansion of the traditional media practice paradigm encouraging practice approaches to media which take seriously the mediating role of technologies in emergent forms of digital media practice. This thesis carries out empirical research into social media/ted practice; it critically examines sites and real-time interactions at the interface, to understand the interrelationships between the specific design of platforms and evolving forms of social media/ted practice. The thesis draws on Media Studies, New Media Studies, Sociology and Social Studies of Technology to explicate an original interdisciplinary analytical framework for studying people’s interactions with social media technologies at the interface. This framework is referred to as the triple articulation of social media/ted practice. The triple articulation of social media/ted practice acknowledges the interplay between the materiality of social media technologies, the cultural coding of social media technologies and active practice with social media technologies. The term social media/ted practice has been coined specifically to emphasise the mediating role of technology in social media use. Using SNSs as a case study the thesis combines critical site analysis with interviews at the interface which illuminate the interpretive and constructive elements of the micro-interactions between people and SNSs that underpin related forms of social media/ted practice. Whilst this thesis is focused on SNSs, the analytical framework has wider applicability in New Media Studies and media-orientated Sociology. The central argument of this thesis is that design matters for social media/ted practice. Site-specific ‘micro’ architectures, affordances and algorithmic processes continue to shape social media/ted practice at the interface. The user-interface works to render aspects of the technology visible, accessible, meaningful and useful. This thesis calls attention to the user-interface as a key site for: (1), mediating social practice (2), understanding emerging social trends (3), site governance and (4), developing critical digital media literacies.

▼ This dissertation analyzes the basalt ground stone industry at the archaeological site of Tres Zapotes, Mexico. Artifacts and by-products were recovered in the excavations conducted by a University of Kentucky project directed by Christopher Pool. All contexts were examined, and the corpus of this study comprises the whole sequence of production, use, and discards of basalt such as by-products of manufacture, unfinished and finished tools, and discarded artifacts. In this opportunity was possible to study over time a change from the Early/Middle Formative period (Olmec occupation) a centralized and exclusionary political economic system to the Late/Terminal Formative period (Epi-Olmec occupation) when there was a corporate system. This work applied contemporary concepts in social sciences such as agency, practice theory, technological choice, and chaîne opératoire. The variation of raw materials over time was studied recoding physical characteristics and a sample of artifacts was analyzed with X-ray florescence in order to see variation in acquisition of rocks over time.

▼ Since 1980s, the cross-strait interaction has been increasingly deepened. The rise of China has brought huge business opportunities. As a result, economic and cross-strait trade, investment, industrial division and other trade relations become closer. However, because of the political sensitivity of cross-strait relations, the cross-strait economic and trade interaction is always conducted by means of nongovernmental, indirect and uniderectional mode. In addition to
Taiwan's existing huge trade deficit with China in trade relations, it also exists vast trade surplus in investment relationship. Such non-reciprocal trade relation is abnormal in the era of globalization, and has an impact on Taiwanâs resource allocation in various production projects and is detrimental to the country's sustainable development. Moreover,
Taiwan and China have joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) one after another in 2002. Many of the principles under the WTO framework, such as the principle of national treatment, most-favored-nation treatment principle etc., are forcing
Taiwan not to avoid the normalization of cross-strait economic development.
Allowing Chinese investors to invest in
Taiwan as an important policy constructing normalization of cross-strait economic and trade relation involves
Taiwan's sovereignty, national security and other sensitive issues. This study explores the policy allowing Chinese investors to invest in
Taiwan separately on three principal axes: Firstly, it researches China's policy trend of extending external investments, and depends on such context to analyze Chinaâs strategic implications of trade with
Taiwan in terms of Chinaâs investment in
Taiwan; Secondly, the regional economic integration in East Asia has brought
Taiwan economic and political marginalization risks, the cross-strait asymmetry trade and investment dependence relations have caused outward relocation phenomenon of
Taiwan's industry. In addition to the above changes in the external and internal environments, the two sides have many principles needed to be followed under the WTO framework. In summary,
Taiwan can no longer take the foregone discriminatory measures toward China-invested enterprises; finally, it explores
Taiwan's security considerations in terms of Chinaâs investment in
Taiwan, summarizing the evolution of policy allowing Chinese investors to invest in
Taiwan, examining the results of such policy and the obstacles it faces, and using the United States âForeign Investment and National Security Act âfor reference, proposing recommendations for Taiwanâs follow-up policy allowing Chinese investors to invest in
Taiwan.

▼ This dissertation is a historically comparative study of adult mortality between
Taiwan and the United States throughout the 20th century. The 20th century was characterized by the largest rise in life expectancy at birth and the most rapid decrease in mortality in recorded human history. This dissertation aims not only to examine and compare the trends and levels of life expectancy in
Taiwan and the United States over an extended period of time, but also to evaluate the extent to which smoking behavior and obesity play an important role in the recent levels of adult mortality in the United States.
I used logistic models of mortality to examine and compare the trends and levels of life expectancy in
Taiwan from 1906 to 2008 and in the United States from 1933 to 2007. Second, I re-estimated life expectancy by introducing smoking-attributable mortality to further compare the levels of life expectancy between the two countries. Third, I estimated event history models to investigate whether and how smoking behavior and obesity are related to mortality in the United States in the 1990 to 2006 and the 2000 to 2006 periods.
At the end of the 20th century, the level of life expectancy at birth for females in the U.S. was higher than in
Taiwan, but they were close. In this century, however, the level of life expectancy at birth in
Taiwan has increased to a higher level than in the U.S. The levels of male life expectancy at birth for the two countries are similar in this century, but there were significant differences in the 20th century. The great improvements in juvenile, background and senescent mortality rates in
Taiwan may be used to explain this correspondence of life expectancy between the two countries today. Besides, higher smoking-attributed mortality can also serve as another possible reason for the stagnant levels of life expectancy in the U.S. Finally, smoking-related and obesity-related mortality have become progressively more important as predictors of adult mortality in the U.S. in past decades.

▼ My thesis asks why Taiwan does not facilitate a path to citizenship to recent immigrants, despite the obvious advantages to do so, as the government’s attempt to promote its society as a model of civic nationalism in Asia, in relation to the pressing need to address labour shortages caused by population aging. I argue that the political economy of care provision that seeks to address the latter problem trumps concerns over national identity. I will look at the changes in the supply of labour in the sector of care since the 1990s as the evidence. Taiwan illustrates the case of East Asian nations’ rapid transition to post-industrial societies, which are now confronted with acute socio-demographic and care crises stemming from aging populations, low fertility rates and a traditional reliance on the family to provide social welfare. This thesis argues that this change in the supply of labour represents a key indicator of the multiple dimensions of the question of exclusion faced by migrant domestic workers in Taiwan. Civil society actors promoting Taiwan’s civic nationalism in the feminist and labour movements and in a few religious associations are unable to address the rights of foreign live-in caregivers because of the dynamics of the political economy of care in Asia and its dependence on migration for reproductive labour.

▼ Abstract
In the past, the Confucian culture, which was followed by the East, had been considered as one decayed ideology obstructing the economic development. This kind of thought has not changed until the rise of Japan and the rapid expansion of East Asia. Some scholars start to discard negative viewpoint, and claim that the Confucian culture is an important element for the rising of East Asia. After that, the Confucian culture has become an upsurge within the academia.
In the research area of Cultural Political
Economy, most scholars have done the research by the foundation of philology, historiography, and philosophy. However, the Taiwanese economist Wei Wou has done his research of Cultural Political
Economy by the foundation of economics. And by the research of Wei Wou, some fresh viewpoint and ideology would be aroused within the Cultural Political
Economy.Wei Wouâs viewpoints and ideology, which have related to the essence of Chinese culture and economic thought, would be demonstrated by this thesis. Furthermore, the process of Wei Wouâs ideology, and âthe theory of three elements,â that is developed for the explanation of national economic development, would also be illustrated by this thesis.

▼ This discourse aims at a displacement of the object of critique of any future ‘critique of political economy’. The first part addresses the nature of critique in general and of ‘critique of political economy’ in particular which has traditionally been conceived as a critique of a mode of production in Marxian terms. The displacement of this object of critique - the mode of production - requires an understanding of the problem of the unity of this mode of production. The second part of our discourse addresses the problem of the money commodity, of credit and debt in relation to the unity of the mode of production. We deny, contrary to Marx, that money is a commodity and affirm instead the importance of a categorical analysis of credit and debt. Adducing an argument advanced by the Italian economist Augusto Graziani, we affirm that money is credit and debt in the initial phase of commodity production. The unity of the Marxian ‘mode of production’ comes to depend on credit and debt and thus a ‘mode of indebtment’ must be postulated. This consequence we name Lazzarato’s problem in honor of Maurizio Lazzarato. We finally affirm that any future ‘critique of political economy’ must address both the analysis and the treatment of Lazzarato’s problem.

▼ The
economy is life. Economic sociologist Polanyi believes that the
economy is embedded in society, and the economic phenomenon is the result of interaction between society and the state. German jurist Lorenz von Stein has the same claim that institution is a result of interaction between society and the state. Both society and the state are indispensable roles in the process of institutional development. In order to meet the economic policy objectives, the government must decide on the adoption of a regulatory policy and the degree of interference, as well as evaluate whether it meets social expectations. Appropriate regulation will exert its effects, and excessive regulation will stifle economic vitality.
On the one hand, the innovation of the business model brings the convenience and benefits of life, injects living water into the existing
economy, and changes the existing lifestyle of consumers. However, the new business model also poses a challenge to the traditional business model. On the other hand, the crisis can also be a turning point. The sharing
economy helps to utilize idle resources. It is an opportunity for traditional operators or those with idle resources. For the government, how to manage this combination of technology and emerging business model is a daunting task. In addition to the fundamental taxation controversies, the government is confronted with issues such as how to protect consumers under innovation or how to strike a balance between the advantages of shock and shared economic models.
In order to answer the above questions, this study compares relevant policies between
Taiwan and Japan with respect to shared accommodation. This study uses literature review, comparison and historical analysis to reconstruct the relationship between the
economy and the government. Then, expert interviews and framework theory are employed to construct the problem of this innovative
economy in our society. The research findings include that the Japanese government has taken on an active role of integration, combining civil, interest groups, and official tripartite forces to jointly develop a new system to adapt to the innovation
economy. On the contrary,
Taiwan government appears to be more conservative and inconsistent.

This research work aims to identify the relationship between the performance of an organization, its system of management as well as the institutional framework of the economy. Through a good airing of the managerial literature in report with our problem of research, we have seen the dominant effect of the institutional framework on the performance of the enterprise and that the latter imposed to leaders the adoption of management systems capable of providing for the survival of the company a minimum of reactivity and vigilance over the complexity, uncertainty and the perpetual change to the environment which means that the management system is a by-product of the institutional framework of the economy. Empirically, through a comparative study France-Tunisia, we have seen that the relative share of the institutional framework for the assessment of the performance of the Tunisian company, predominantly important, is the result of numerous and profound transformations and restructuring by which the country has crossed to see its economy as qualified emerging. As regards France, we thought it was obvious that the crisis that has shaken the economy lighthouse in Europe will certainly affect the performance of the French company, sometimes unable to overcome this cape, which has required the intervention of the government through the policies of recovery and regulating adequate. That is why even the supremacy of the effect exerted by the…

▼ Circular economy is an economic model aiming at decoupling economic growth from the consumption of finite resources. It attracts attention to system changes at all levels, and Taoyuan City Government devotes itself to the circular economy development as well. Nevertheless, the Taoyuan environmental protection park, with the early ambition of developing an eco-industrial park, currently consists of only homogenous waste treatment enterprises. This research aims to explore the possible future of the park and the largest scope of symbiosis from the city government’s perspective. It also attempts to enhance the understanding of the relationship between circular economy and industrial symbiosis. Previous literature shows that no single, universal theory can be expected to predict the emergence of industrial symbiosis. Regional difference together with contextual factors play a huge role in the industrial symbiosis and circular economy development. Several interviews have been conducted with city government officials, business representatives from the park, public administrators, and the non-government advocate. This research adopts the integrated mixed-level analysis, comprising the SWOT analysis and the context analysis, to present the holistic case knowledge and to structure the key factors. The sway between a globalized neo-liberal economy and a localized circular economy is addressed. Mainly due to the small scope, the industry type, and the inherently weak geographical location, the conclusion is to maintain the achieved sustainability of the park and not to develop into an eco-industrial park. Considering the political and economic reality at the macro-global level, six other recommendations are formulated to facilitate a circular economy from the Taoyuan city government’s perspective. The key findings have been validated by all interviewees and are presented to the city government as policy advice.

▼ This thesis is based on fieldwork carried out among weavers of rush-woven objects in rural Taiwan. In this thesis, I argue that nowadays rush-weaving is good work, though not good labour, for the weavers, and the social logic of Yuanli rush-weaving lies in the process of craft production. It is an ethnographic investigation into the practice of rush-weaving in association with colonialism, the heritage movement, and museum operation. Firstly, this thesis examines the economics and history and practice of craft production, in order to understand how the craft industry has become what it is and what is embedded in the process of production. The skill-based knowledge required of weavers is embedded in the relationship between a weaver and her environment. While this fundamental characteristic remains, new meanings and uses are attached to craft practice and the objects produced. Secondly, this thesis explores the process by which craft production is involved in the heritage and museum movement in contemporary Taiwan, so as to understand the interrelationship between craft production and the movement. I consider how ideas of tradition, heritage, and museums are perceived and enacted in everyday life, and find that these ideas contain contradictions and have different meanings for insiders and outsiders. The analysis as a whole seeks to explain why artisans keep weaving in contemporary society, and that it must be understood in terms of their continuous reaction to the constant transformation that the rush-weaving industry has undergone, which is reflected in the relationship between artisans and their objects in the process of production. The thesis addresses current issues – which are both fiercely contested in events and policies, and marginalised in everyday life – in Taiwan, but also attempts to contribute to the anthropological perspective on knowledge in practice, technology and social logics, past and present, and tradition and innovation.
