▼ The purpose of this study is to use calcite and volcanic soil as cement filling and additive
materials in order to maximize cement productions in Ethiopia. In this study the
characteristics of calcite and volcanic soil, suitable mix design of OPC raw materials,
sources of calcite, chemical properties of calcite, volcanic soil, basic cement raw
materials and clinker, and the effect of calcite and volcanic soil on mechanical
performance of concrete were investigated. The additions of calcite up to 15% by weight
improves early strength and additions above 15% results little decreasing early strength
but develop high lateral strength. Use of volcanic soil from 28% to 35% by weight results
a decrease of early strength and develops lateral strength. The additions of these materials
did not affect quality of cement and mechanical performance of concrete.
The investigation shows that up to 15% Calcite filled cements have superior properties to
the current Portland cement and Portland Pozzolanic Cements such as high early strength,
excellent volume stability, minimum cost of productions and easy manufacture process.

▼ With increasing awareness of lead's harmful effects to
the environment and human health, there is a large drive toward
lead free products. One of the biggest challenges with lead free
electronic products is the spontaneous formation of
Sn whiskers,
which can be very detrimental to a product's reliability and its
useable life. Though various attempts had been made to understand
whisker formation in the SnCu system, a complete model that
explains all the observations still doesn't exist. In this thesis I
have presented systematic quantitative studies on whisker phenomena
by monitoring various parameters (volume of IMC, stress developed
in
Sn layer and whisker density) associated with the SnCu system.
The observed correlation between these parameters highlighted the
mechanisms that control stress evolution and whisker formation in
Sn layers plated over Cu films. We found that intermetallic
compound (IMC) formation occurs at the SnCu interface
(preferentially at the
Sn grain boundary) which results in
compressive stress build up in the
Sn layer. The resulting stress
acts as a driving force for whisker growth. The SnCu system was
systematically modified to study the interdependences and
importance of each feature. The studies on variation in the
Sn
layer (thickness, grain size, alloying, and heat treatment)
indicate that the propensity to whisker strongly depends on the
ability of the
Sn layer to relax the compressive stress build up.
Hence Pb addition of the
Sn layer assists in eliminating the
whisker formation by enhancing the stress relaxation. We studied
the mechanical response to thermally-induced stress in various
Sn
films (pure
Sn, with alloying, and surface treatment) to quantify
the stress relaxation mechanism in
Sn. In-situ studies on
Sn-Cu
systems using the synchrotron X-ray beam were performed in order to
understand the variation in different key parameters at localized
level. The role of the surface oxide was studied by deliberately
removing the oxide on fresh samples by using the FIB to sputter
away circular regions. Real time measurements of the
Sn surface
were performed using SEM to observe the evolution of whisker
morphology.

▼ The dominant materials used for solders in electronic
assemblies over the past 60 years have been Pb-Sn alloys.
Increasing pressure from environmental and health authorities has
stimulated the development of various Pb-free solders. Two of the
most promising replacements are eutectic Sn-Cu and Sn-Ag-Cu alloys
that are produced primarily by electrodeposition. During soldering
and solid state aging (storage or in service of the electronic
assemblies), interactions take place at the solder/substrate metal
interface and form intermetallic compounds (IMCs) which are crucial
for the reliability of the solder joints. Simple and "green"
Sn-citrate and Sn-Cu-citrate solutions have been developed and
optimized to electrodeposit eutectic and near eutectic Sn-Cu solder
films. Sn-citrate suspensions with Cu particles and Sn-Cu-citrate
suspensions with Ag nano-particles have also been developed and
optimized to allow for electrochemical composite deposition of
eutectic and near eutectic Sn-Cu and Sn-Ag-Cu solder films.
Different plating and post-plating conditions, including solution
concentration, current density, agitation, additives, and aging,
have been investigated by evaluating their effects on plating rate,
deposit composition and microstructure. Tri-ammonium citrate is
used as the only complexing agent for Sn, Sn-Cu, and Sn-Ag-Cu
deposition. Speciation diagram calculations, reduction potential
calculations, and polarization studies are conducted to study
Sn-citrate solution chemistry and the kinetics of Sn
electrodeposition. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis
is used to identify the precipitates formed in Sn-citrate solutions
at low pH. Current-controlled and potential-controlled
electrochemical techniques, nucleation modeling, and surface
morphology characterization techniques are applied to study the
nucleation and film growth mechanism of Sn and Sn-Cu
electrodeposition from Sn-citrate and Sn-Cu-citrate solutions.
Reflow and aging tests for deposited Sn-Cu and Sn-Ag-Cu solder
films on Cu and Ni substrates are performed to study the
interactions between the solder and the substrate and the formation
and growth of IMCs at the solder/substrate interface, by
characterizing the microstructure of the IMCs and calculating
diffusion coefficients.

▼ As mentioned in [8], A group representation can be thought of as an action
oi a group G on some vector space. Such actions arise naturally in many
branches oi mathematics and physics and as such it is important to study
and understand the theory of representations. Cayley's theorem asserts that
everv finite group can be embedded in a group of symmetries Sn for some n
- this makes the studies related to the symmetric group of much significance
since by the isomorphism guaranteed by the Cayley’s theorem we may un
derstand the properties of any other finite group.
A* an illustration, the solution space of a differential equation in a 3-dimensional
?pace having a rotational symmetry has its solution space invariant under ro
tations. Thus the space of solutions will constitute a representation of the
rotation group 50(3). If we know what all of the representations of 50(3)
are, then this can help immensely in narrowing down what the space of so
lutions can be.
In fact, one of the chief applications of representation theory is to exploit
symmetry. If a system has symmetry, then the set of symmetries will form a
group, and understanding the representations of the symmetry group allows
us to use that symmetry to simplify the problem
This report focuses on the representation theory of symmetric groups and
in particular on the construction of -ill irreducible modules of the symmet-
lic group 5;i 'Otherwise known as the Specht Modules). There are numerous
applications of representation of groups and in particular tiie representa
tion of the symmetric group. For instance, they arise in physics, probability
v
and statistics, topological graph theory, the theory of partially ordered sets
amongst many other areas.
This report contains 5 chapters - in chapter 1 we have provided elementary
definitions as well as basic results about the symmetric group Sn. Chapter 2
is on the ordinary representation of finite group with some small emphasis on
the symmetric group Sn. It should be noted that this chapter is not exhaus
tive as far as representation theory is concerned, we have only mentioned
some useful aspects that is in direct reference to the main objective of this
report. In chapter 3 we have dwelt on the construction of the ordinary irre
ducible modules of the symmetric group Sn popularly known as the Specht
modules, and a simple example for the case n = 3 has been given.
In representation theory of finite groups, it is useful to know which ordi
nary irreducible representations remain irreducible when reduced modulo a
prime p. In chapter 4. we have traced the history of classification of ordinary
irreducible modules that remain irreducible modulo p.

Light Echoes and Late-Time Emissions of Type IA Supernovae.

▼ Type Ia supernovae have many applications in astronomy, yet with fundamental properties still not fully understood, new methods for investigating the environment of a supernova need to be developed. A light echo is produced from the scattering of light from a bright source and can be used to analyze the dust in the vicinity of the supernova and learn invaluable information about the source. These techniques can put constraints on explosion and progenitor models. Although light echo detections from Type Ia supernovae are rare, with only seven total extragalactic detections, this could be due to the lack of thorough late-epoch monitoring. Since key information is determined from even a single light echo detection, light echo searches should be undertaken in the future to supplement our understanding of supernovae. As part of our collaborative campaign for studying the emission of supernovae at late epochs, we have added two light echoes to a small sample size of Type Ia supernova light echo detections:
SN 2009ig in NGC 1015 and a dual echo from
SN 2007af in NGC 5584. Both echoes were observed with the Hubble Space Telescope and allow for the most detailed images of Type Ia supernova light echoes to date. Three filters (F555W, F814W, and F350LP) captured the echoes obtained with the Wide Field Camera 3, and since both host galaxies were imaged as part of the same observing program, these cases will be the best comparable light echo pairs. We also further investigate the light echoes from
SN 2006X in NGC 4321 and
SN 1998bu in NGC 3368 from Hubble Space Telescope archival images. Analyses performed on the images gives crucial insight into the dusty environment of the host galaxy and the surroundings of the supernova. The outer echo from
SN 2007af was created from an interstellar dust sheet located ~800 pc in front of the supernova, while the inner echo could be from interstellar or circumstellar origin. A circumstellar light echo could imply a single degenerate progenitor. The dust is closer to the supernova for the echo in
SN 2009ig. Exploring the color of the echoes gives implications on the dust type, and both light echo cases have atypical color evolution from model predictions, which suggests abnormal dust is involved. The echoes from
SN 2006X and double echo from
SN 1998bu show the evolution of the echoes over a long time period, which can be compared to past findings by multiple teams. The echoes show remarkable similarity to other Type Ia echo detections, and with more discoveries, the transition of light echoes from normal emission can be investigated, which could further probe the supernova ejecta. Using a process we developed, we calculate the magnitude differences between Hubble Space Telescope and standard filters in the case of normal supernovae. We conclude by comparing all light echo detections to date and discussing the future goals of this work.

▼ Type Ia supernovae (
SN~Ia) have proven to be
incredibly useful as distance indicators and in nuclear
astrophysics, but there remain many unanswered questions as to
their nature. We examine three particular
SN~Ia at length in an
attempt to provide constraints on both their theory and their
application to cosmology. We first present
SN~2007qd, one
of the lowest-luminosity
SN~Ia ever discovered. It appears to
belong to the
SN~2002cx-like subclass of peculiar
SN~Ia. We observe
and analyze the photospheric-phase spectra and photometry for this
event and determine that, despite its extreme nature, it still
appears to be a thermonuclear event rather than a core-collapse
SN~Ic. We also discover a possible relation between the luminosity
and the low expansion velocities (2000sim7000 km/s) of similar
events, and determine that they constitute a well-defined group of
SN~Ia. From the explosion kinematics and the content of the
spectra, we argue that
SN~2007qd was likely caused by a pure
deflagration of a carbon and oxygen white dwarf. We then consider
SN~2008Q, a
SN~Ia that exploded in the same early-type host galaxy
as the peculiar
SN~2000cx. This provided a chance for a direct
comparison of two
SN~Ia at the same distance, extinction and host
environment. We combine photometry from the ultraviolet through to
the mid-infrared (MIR) and create a picture of how this
SN evolved
bolometrically over a span of two years. We discover that
SN~2008Q
was relatively bright in the ultraviolet, and characterize the
possible existence of a class of
SN~Ia with similar UV excesses. We
identify intrinsic differences between
SN~2008Q and
SN~2000cx, and
discuss what this means for the variation in explosion and nebular
physics in
SN~Ia events. We present next the mid-infrared and
optical decay of
SN~2011fe. This
SN~Ia exploded in the nearby
galaxy M101, allowing observations of high signal-to-noise during
the later phases. We examine this
SN with Spitzer/IRAC MIR
photometry and discover that the decay rates in each of these
channels behave similarly to certain optical channels. We use
spectra taken with the Large Binocular Telescope to identify which
atomic transitions are responsible for the decay in optical
passbands, and generalize their contributions to the MIR
photometric filters. From these observations, we find a correlation
between the difference in the MIR filters and the early light curve
width. Lastly, we summarize these findings and discuss them in the
framework of building a model for
SN~Ia explosions, identifying new
routes for further research.

▼ When Arabic learners first delve into the English language, they may find many difficulties in pronunciation due to the fact that there are vast differences between English and Arabic, especially regarding the number of vowels and their acoustic realizations. Very few studies have investigated this area of English language acquisition. The aim of this study is to examine the production of English vowels by Arabic speakers and to examine if there are gender differences in the production of English vowels by Arabic English learners. By using the phonetic software Praat, the values of duration and formant of vowel sounds was measured and obtained. English vowels produced by the subjects were recorded and analyzed using Praat, and were compared to results from a research project looking at English native speakers in Colorado. Since the participants were exposed to English and had lived in Colorado, USA, differences in vowel production were discussed and an analysis was conducted. The result of this study displayed that there are significant differences between Saudi ELLs and Colorado English native speakers in almost all the vowels. In addition, this study revealed the significant role of gender and regional dialect in producing English vowels by Arabic speakers.

▼ Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which are the most important electrochemical energy storage devices for small electronic devices and emerging electrical/hybrid vehicles, have been reigning over current rechargeable battery markets due to their high energy densities and great longevity. In recent years, numerous efforts have been made to develop new electrode materials to meet the demand for batteries with higher energy density and enhanced cycling stability. For anode materials, Tin (Sn) serves as a promising alternative to conventional carbonaceous anode active materials due to its ability to react with more lithium ions and achieve higher capacity based on the alloying/de-alloying mechanism. My Master’s work toward the commercialization of Sn anode has been focused on the systematic investigation on this anode material, including the fabrication of ultrafine Sn nanoparticles, exploration of a novel binder, and developing a superior nanostructured configuration of the active material.

▼ Standard second-order self-adjoint forms of the transport equation, such as the even-parity, odd-parity, and self-adjoint angular flux equation, cannot be used in voids. Perhaps more importantly, they experience numerical convergence difficulties in near-voids. Here we present a new form of a second-order self-adjoint transport equation that has an advantage relative to standard forms in that it can be used in voids or near-voids. Our equation is closely related to the standard least-squares or normal form of the transport equation, which is applicable in a void and has a non-conservative analytic form. However, unlike the standard least-squares form of the transport equation, our least-squares equation is compatible with source iteration. It has been found that the standard least-squares form of the transport equation with a linear-continuous finite-element spatial discretization has difficulty in the thick diffusion limit. Here we extensively test the 1-D slab-geometry version of our scheme with respect to void solutions, spatial convergence rate, and the intermediate and thick diffusion limits. We also define an effective diffusion synthetic acceleration
scheme for our discretization. Our conclusion is that our least-squares S_(n) formulation represents an excellent alternative to existing second-order S_(n) transport formulations.

▼ The sporadic occurrence of voids within intermetallic compounds during microelectronic soldering is a key factor affecting the reliability of electronic solder joints. This study aims to understand the void formation mechanisms and investigate different soldering effects. Cu/Sn solder joints in flip chip packages were examined at 190°C after zero to four weeks thermal aging. Experimental approach included ion milling and plasma focused ion beam (PFIB) cross sectional examination, while simulation approach such as finite element modeling (FEM) was used to support the results. Results showed voids presence at Cu6Sn5/solder interface after three weeks aging due to the large local tensile stress induced by volume shrinkage associated with intermetallic compounds formation. These voids have tendency to self-heal after four weeks aging by a compressive stress that originates from the solder ball shrinkage. Compressive stress of 59 MPa was found sufficient to close the 3 µm void. Moreover, higher level of carbon and organic additives during the electroplating of Cu substrates showed a remarkable effect on the impurities incorporation, which in turn has led to more Krikendall voids at Cu3Sn/Cu interfaces. This suggests that by avoiding C and O impurities on Cu substrates, there will be less voids and thus more reliable joints. Furthermore, solder joints in Cu/Sn/Cu sandwich structure without underfill were found to release volume shrinkage stress by height reduction and thus resulting in no voids formation. On the contrary, in structures that have underfill filled in between the solder joints, stress will accumulate to a higher level when the volume intends to shrink and stimulates voids to form. The simulated strain in solder joints with the underfill can be as high as 60 % while it can only be 25 % without the underfill. Both experimental results and FEM suggest that voids have higher forming tendency when subjected to the underfill. Last but not the least, cracks will generate due to large mismatch of coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) when solder joints undergo multiple reflows. Underfill can compensate the large difference and suppress the cracks formation. Consequently, the application of underfill is very crucial for voids formation and solder joints reliability.

Carbon supported Pt-Sn catalysts were prepared by reduction of Pt and Sn precursors with formic acid. The method allowed the efficient preparation of catalysts with low Sn contents (Pt:Sn ratio 9:1) and with high Sn contents (Pt:Sn ratio 1:3. In spite of the fact that Sn was anchored in the material, only part of the Sn is inserted in the fcc structure of Pt. Therefore, a thermal treatment in a reducing atmosphere was necessary to increase the degree of alloy. Thermal treatments were done between 100 and 500 °C and the Pt3Sn material treated at 200 °C showed the best performance in a direct ethanol fuel cell. The thermal treatment at 200 °C allowed an increase of the degree of alloy without modifying the face centered cubic Pt structure and without promoting the coalescence of the nanoparticles anchored on the carbon support. The Pt-Sn catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption and transmission electron microscopy. The activity for the electro-oxidation of ethanol was evaluated with electrochemical techniques and experiments in a single direct ethanol fuel cell. Studies with Pt single crystals with low and high Miller indices were done to complement the study of the ethanol electro-oxidation.

SN o SD).

▼ Apple fruit acidity which considerably affects fruit taste and flavor is primarily determined by malate concentrations. Previous studies reported that apple fruit acidity was predominantly controlled by the major QTL
Ma. To better understand apple fruit acidity, this study attempts to identify and characterize the gene underpinning
Ma and its associated co-expression gene networks. To achieve the goal, three sets of experiments were conducted. The first set of experiments was designed to identify the candidate gene for
Ma and was summarized in Chapter 1. This chapter presents that the
Ma locus physically spans over 65kb and harbors two aluminum-activated malate transporter (ALMT) -like genes, designated Ma1 and Ma2. Other important findings include 1) only Ma1 was expressed in significant correlation with the variation of acid levels, and 2) there is a nucleotide mutation that leads to a pre-mature stop codon in Ma1.Overall, it concludes that Ma1 rather than Ma2 is the gene underlying
Ma. The second set of experiments aims at identification of the Ma1 associated coexpression gene network regulating malate levels in developing fruit of Golden Delicious and was reported in Chapter 3. One finding of this chapter is that malatepyruvate interconversion, photosynthesis, mitochondrial electron transport, and amino acid degradation were important pathways for the change of malate levels in developing fruit. The other finding is that symplastic signal transduction, transcriptional regulation, post-translational modification and apoplastic roles were important in the regulation of fruit acidity. The third set of experiments was conducted to identify the Ma1 associated coexpression gene network controlling acidity in mature fruit of ten diverse apples and was described in Chapter 4. Data in this chapter suggested that calcium signaling was likely a crucial mechanism that regulates both the expression of Ma1 and the Ma1 associated co-expression gene network governing fruit acidity. Chapter 2 is about improving the current version of apple reference transcriptome due to its unaccep low coverage in mapping of RNA-seq reads. The improved apple reference transcriptome comprises 71,178 genes (17,524 are novel) and increases the coverage of RNA-seq reads from 37-46% to 62-82%. This chapter lays a foundation for data analysis in Chapters 3 and 4. In conclusion, this study takes the understanding of apple fruit acidity to a higher level and opens more grounds for further dedicated studies.

In this work it was prepared nanocomposites based in PP/EPDM thermoplastic elastomer and organoclay. Maleinized polypropylene and ethylene-propylene-diene rubber, PP-MA and EPDM-MA, respectively, were employed as interfacial agents. Also two kinds of organoclays, differing about surfactant chemical structure and as consequence thermal stability, were investigated as inorganic filler. Nanocomposites were prepared by melt intercalation in an internal chamber mix and organoclay was incorporated by masterbatches addition, which ones were previously made. It was investigated the influence of amount and kind of organoclay and interfacial agent on tensile properties, rheology and morphology (crystallinity and structure type) of nanocomposites obtained. The results showed that interfacial agents addition promoted a better dispersion degree of organoclay platelets in PP/EPDM matrix, mainly PP-MA. Nanocomposites with both intercalated and exfoliated structures were obtained. These exhibited higher Young modulus and kept their elongation values. The better dispersion degree of clay platelets in nanocomposites containing PP-MA was confirmed by rheology measurements. Increasing amounts of organoclay lowered the crystallinity degree of nanocomposites but the reprocessability was maintained similar to that of pure TPE. Finally, the chemical structure of surfactants did not change the intercalation/exfoliation process due to the similarity of organoclay basal spacing and moderated TPE processing…

▼ The electro–mechanical connection between under bump metallization (UBM) and solder in flip–chip bonding is achieved by the formation of brittle intermetallic compounds (IMCs) during the soldering process. These IMCs continue to grow in the solid–state during storage at room temperature and service at an elevated temperature leading to degradation of the contacts. In this thesis, the diffusion–controlled growth mechanism of the phases and the formation of the Kirkendall voids at the interface of UBM (Cu, Ni, Au, Pd, Pt) and
Sn (bulk/electroplated) are studied extensively.
Based on the microstructural analysis in SEM and TEM, the presence of bifurcation of the Kirkendall marker plane, a very special phenomenon discovered recently, is found in the Cu–
Sn system. The estimated diffusion coefficients at these marker planes indicate one of the reasons for the growth of the Kirkendall voids, which is one of the major reliability concerns in a microelectronic component. Systematic experiments using different purity of Cu are conducted to understand the effect of impurities on the growth of the Kirkendall voids. It is conclusively shown that increase in impurity enhances the growth of voids.
The growth rates of the interdiffusion zone are found to be comparable in the Cu–
Sn and the Ni–
Sn systems. EPMA and TEM analyses indicate the growth of a metastable phase in the Ni–
Sn system in the low temperature range. Following, the role of Ni addition in Cu on the growth of IMCs in the Cu–
Sn system is studied based on the quantitative diffusion analysis. The analysis of thermodynamic driving forces, microstructure and crystal structure of Cu6Sn5 shed light on the atomic mechanism of diffusion. It does not change the crystal structure of phases; however, the microstructural evolution, the diffusion rates of components and the growth of the Kirkendall voids are strongly influenced in the presence of Ni. Considering microstructure of the product phases in various Cu/
Sn and Cu(Ni)/
Sn diffusion couples, it has been observed that
(i) phases have smaller grains and nucleate repeatedly, when they grow from Cu or Cu(Ni) alloy, and (ii) the same phases have elongated grains, when they grow from another phase.
A difference in growth rate of the phases is found in bulk and electroplated diffusion couples in the Au–
Sn system. The is explained in AuSn4 based on the estimated tracer diffusion coefficients, homologous temperature of the experiments, grain size distribution and crystal structure of the phase. The growth rates of the phases in the Au–
Sn system are compared with the Pd–
Sn and the Pt–
Sn systems. Similar to the Au–
Sn system, the growth rate of the interdiffusion zone is found to be parabolic in the Pd–
Sn system; however, it is linear in the Pt–
Sn system. Following, the effect of addition of Au, Pd and Pt in Cu is studied on growth rate of the phases. An analysis on the formation of the Kirkendall voids indicates that the addition of Pd or Pt is deleterious to the structure compared to the addition of Au. This study indicates that…

▼ The mode of Ti and
Sn action of anticancer compounds is still poorly understood. For each octahedral Ti(bzac)2 X2 and
Sn(bzac)2 X2 (Hbzac = 1-benzoylacetone) complexes there are five possible isomers. It is not known which of these isomers is responsible for the anticancer activity. One of the Ti complex Ti(bzac)2(OEt)2 whose trade name is budotitane® is a anticancer drug on clinically trial base. Therefore we use VT-NMR (low temperature to high temperature) studies and their crystal structures (1a, 1b, and 2a) to examine their isomerization behavior, conversion rate constant k, and conversion barrier energy ÎG‡.
We suspect the antitumor activity of Ti and
Sn compounds strongly depends on the unsubstituted phenyl rings of the β-diketonato ligands in the outer sphere of the molecule. If these phenyl rings are replaced by methyl groups, the activity totally disappears. Therefore we propose that the anticancer activity of budotitane may be determined by a DNA intercalating mechanism. We further changed the ligand from Hbzac to FHnpac (FHnpac = 4, 4, 4-trifluoro-1-(naphthalen-3-yl) butane-1, 3-dione) in order to monitor their isomers exchange via 1H NMR. The related crystal structures (1a-NF, 1b-NF, and 2a-NF) were obtained fortunately. The stereochemistry of Ti and
Sn complexes as well as their controlling factors is discussed.

▼ A nonlinear spatial multigrid algorithm was developed and explored as a technique to efficiently
solve the nonlinear S2 acceleration equations for
SN neutron transport calculations in 1-D
slabs. Acceleration of the basic source iteration process in
SN calculations is necessary in problems
with highly diffusive regions. Direct inversion would be a more efficient method in 1-D, but a
multigrid method has the potential to be far more efficient than other techniques in 2-D. This work
is a first step toward a 2-D multigrid algorithm. The computational results show that this scheme
works well for optically-thin cells on the fine mesh, but degrades significantly for optically-thick
cells on the fine mesh.

▼ The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the usefulness of homotopy continuation applied in the context of neutral particle transport where traditional methods of acceleration degrade. This occurs in higher dimensional heterogeneous problems [51]. We focus on utilizing homotopy continuation as a means of providing a better initial guess for difficult problems. We investigate various homotopy formulations for two primary diffcult problems: a thick-diffusive fixed internal source, and a k-eigenvalue problem with high dominance ratio. We also investigate the usefulness of homotopy continuation for computationally intensive problems with 30-energy groups. We find that homotopy continuation exhibits usefulness in specific problem formulations. In the thick-diffusive problem it shows benefit when there is a strong internal source in thin materials. In the k-eigenvalue problem, homotopy continuation provides an improvement in convergence speed for fixed point iteration methods in high dominance ratio problems. We also show that one of our imbeddings successfully stabilizes the nonlinear formulation of the k-eigenvalue problem with a high dominance ratio.

▼ The shear stress induced by soldering for the interconnection of silicon solar cells can lead to increased micro cracks and decrease manufacturing yields for thinner cells. Concerns remain in transitioning to copper (Cu) metallisation to reduce silver consumption regarding the reliability of using soldered interconnection to Cu-plated cells. This thesis investigates the electrochemical deposition of eutectic tin (
Sn) - bismuth (Bi) alloy and describes three applications of the plated alloy for the interconnection of silicon solar cells. In the first application, it is shown that by controlling the plating current density, eutectic
Sn-Bi alloy can be deposited from an electrolyte containing both
Sn and Bi ions on Cu interconnection tabs as a substitute for
Sn-lead solder. Reflowing the alloy after plating can improve the bonding strength with an average force of 1.26 N/mm being measured in a pull test of two bonded Cu tabs where the plated
Sn-Bi was reflowed on a hotplate at 200 C and then bonded at 180 C with quenching in ethylene glycol for fast cooling. The second application involves the deposition of eutectic
Sn-Bi alloy on n-type and p-type Cu contacts of laser-doped selective-emitter cells using light-induced and field-induced plating, respectively. The importance of uniformly reflowing the alloy after plating is demonstrated, with cells having plated
Sn-Bi alloy and interconnected using Smart Wire Connection Technology (with
Sn-silver coated wires) experiencing a power loss of 10% after 140 thermal cycles if the alloy was reflowed before lamination and 51% if the alloy was not reflowed. In the third application, the use of plated
Sn-Bi is proposed to provide bonding for a backsheet metallisation scheme in which an inkjet-patterned seed layer was plated with Cu and eutectic
Sn-Bi alloy to enable bonding to cells. The tapered height of plated Cu is advantageous in reducing the Cu usage for back contact cells. This thesis demonstrates the future potential of plated
Sn-Bi alloy to enable cost-effective interconnection of silicon solar cells in a range of different ways. It also highlights the importance of developing methods to accurately characterise the plated alloy composition and uniformly reflowing the alloy before bonding.

▼ Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been very successful
as a source of rechargeable energy storage. These LIBs typically
use graphite as an anode, which has high cyclability (> 200
cycles)(1) but a low charge capacity (372 mAh/g) compared to
several pure metal anodes. Conversely,
Sn is a promising low-cost,
high charge capacity material (959 mAh/g) but suffers from low
cyclability (20 useable cycles or less)(2, 3) due to irreversible
capacity loss. This irreversible loss can be attributed to initial
reduction of
Sn-oxide (SnO/SnO
2),
formation/destruction of the (solid-electrolyte interface) SEI
layer, and “pulverization” of electroactive
Sn material (due to
volumetric strain). In this study all three processes were
electrochemically analyzed using galvanostatically electrodeposited
Sn thin films. These
Sn thin films were optimized for surface
uniformity and reproducibility by screening films plated at 2
current densities (1 and 10
mA/cm
2), at 3
plating times (80, 240 and 600 s), and with 2 solution compositions
(500 mM H
2SO
4 +10 mM
SnSO
4 with and without 5 mM hydroquinone) by
profilometry, scanning electron microscopy, and optical microscopy.
The optimal plating parameters were determined to be 1
mA/cm2 with
hydroquinone at 80 s (~37 nm) and 240 s (~200 nm). Cyclic
voltammetry and galvanostatic cycling with potential limitation
(GCPL) was used to analyze 200 nm
Sn films. Three peak couples were
resolved using cyclic voltammetry at 4 scan rates (0.1, 1, 5 and 20
mV/s). These peaks were most resolved at 0.1 mV/s and appeared at
potentials that correlated with literature. GCPL displayed a trend
of capacity loss in almost every cycle and a cumulative capacity
loss of ~ 90% on the 50th cycle. Electrochemical quartz crystal
microbalance was performed on 37 nm
Sn thin films with cyclic
voltammetry between 0.4-2.0 V vs. Li/Li
+ at
1 mV/s. The mass density change per cycle observed was 5.01 μg/cm
2 for the 1st cycle, 1.30 μg/cm
2 for the 2nd cycle, 0.43 μg/cm
2 for the 3rd cycle, 1.15 μg/cm
2 for the 4th cycle, and 0.40 μg/cm
2 for the 5th cycle. Also, mass/charge
ratios observed around peak potentials ranged from 9.4 g/mol
e
- to 24 g/mol e
-.
The (mass change per mole of electrons) mpe values obtained from
the first cycle were the highest. Continuous, irreversible mass
deposition was observed each cycle in addition to the lithiation
and delithiation processes (7 g/mol e
-).
These results can be accounted for by the possible formation of a
Li
2AuSn
2 alloy and
the use of a bottom potential limit that is 300 mV higher than in
the other studies. Qualitatively this study does agree with the
findings in literature about the gravimetric response of
Sn
electrode while cycled within a LIB test cell.

▼ The orientation relationship and interfaces of PtSn4 and PtSn with the Pt (001) and (111) surfaces have been studied with transmission electron microscopy. Pt was evaporated onto the NaCl (001) and (111) surfaces to form epitaxial Pt thin films and
Sn was evaporated onto the Pt films at different temperature to form PtSn4 and PtSn. Pt was evaporated onto the NaCl (001) and (111) surfaces at 350 â to form epitaxial Pt thin films of [001] and [111] zone axes, respectively. Some grains are in random orientation and other as ring pattern. The grain size was at about 10-20 nm.
Sn was evaporated onto the Pt surface at 150 â to form PtSn4 and at 200 â to form PtSn. No good orientation relationships were formed on both the PtSn4/
Sn and the PtSn/
Sn interfaces. Heterogeneous nucleation theory, predicts that PtSn should form before PtSn4, but PtSn4 was observed to the first to form. The possible reasons were discussed.

Initially all the systems studied were evaluated by Cyclic Voltammetry to determine the deposition potentials of the pure metals and alloy. The results showed that the presence of the complexant shifts the deposition process of both Sn and Zn to more negative potential values. The metals codeposition can be determined by the variation in the shape and potentials of the peaks of deposition in the voltammograms obtained for the alloy when compared to those for individual metals.

Evolution of nuclear structure in the vicinity of the doubly magic nuclei 132Sn will be discussed in this work, through the spectroscopy of 136Sb, 136Sn and 138Sn isotopes. Several Sb and Sn known isotopes beyond the Z=50 and N=82 shell closures will be briefly presented in the first chapter, aswell as some of the problems arising from the current shell model descritpion of nuclei in this region. Reader will also find in the same chapter a brief description of the most important tools needed to understand such calculations. Excited state of 136Sb have been populated at the Institut Laue-Langevin (Grenoble) through thermal neutron-induced fission on a 241Pu target. Fission fragments produced were separated with the Lohengrin mass spectrometer. Conversion electrons and gammas from 136Sb were measured and confirmed the previously proposed schemed. A new 31(7) ns isomer has been measured and assigned to the 4- state. Details of the experiment and analysis are presented in the first part. The second part is devoted to the 136,138Sn isotopes, produced via in-flight fission of 238U on a 9Be target at the RIBF of the RIKEN (Tokyo). Mass separators BigRIPS and ZDS allowed…
