▼ Tourists’ pre-purchase evaluation can be affected by various contextual factors. One such factor is temporal distance, the distance between evaluation and actual consumption of the event. The purpose of this research was to explore various attributes of a cruise ship (i.e., onboard attributes) and examine how the importance of onboard attributes is affected by temporal distance in consumers’ pre-purchase evaluation of a cruise. To accomplish this aim, the results are presented in two separate articles. In the first article a list of onboard attributes was identified based on open coding of online cruise reviews and in-depth interviews with cruisers and potential cruisers. In addition, a systematic comparison was made between cruisers and potential cruisers in terms of the general importance they attach to the onboard attributes in the cruise decision, which is grounded in Attribute Knowledge Theory and studies on tourists’ novelty seeking. Using a sample of cruisers and potential cruisers with similar socio-demographics, the results indicated that cruisers and potential cruisers perceived seven dimensions of onboard attributes, but attached different importance to some of them. Specifically, potential cruisers attached a higher level of importance to onboard attributes deemed unimportant by cruisers (i.e., “Recreation and Sport Attributes,” “Fitness and Health Attributes,” and “Supplementary Attributes”), but attached a similar level of importance to onboard attributes deemed important by cruisers (i.e., “Entertainment Attributes,” “Core Attributes,” and “Crew Attributes”). Building upon the findings presented in the first article, the effect of temporal distance on the importance of onboard attributes in pre-purchase evaluation of a cruise was evaluated. This inquiry was grounded in Construal Level Theory, which distinguishes two types of attributes: high-level construal attributes (essential and superordinate) and low-level construal attributes (peripheral and subordinate). Using a sample of real cruisers between 50 and 59 years old, the data suggested that, in general, consumers attach more relative importance to high-level construal attributes when temporal distance is large, but attach more relative importance to low-level construal attributes when temporal distance is small. In summary, the findings indicate that temporal distance is an important contextual factor in pre-purchase evaluation of a cruise. It affects the importance of onboard attributes in different ways, depending on whether an attribute is deemed to be high-level construal or low-level construal. ▼ This experiment investigated the processes underlying similarity-based free categorization. Of particular interest was how temporal distance between similar objects affects the likelihood that people will put them into the same novel category. Participants engaged in a free categorization task referred to as binomial labeling. This task required participants to generate a two-part label (A1, B1, C1, etc.) indicating family (superordinate) and species (subordinate) levels of categorization for each object in a visual display. Participants were shown the objects one at a time in a sequential presentation; after labeling each object, they were asked to describe the similarity between that object and previous objects by selecting one of five choices from a drop down menu. Our main prediction was that temporal distance should affect categorization, specifically, that people should be less likely to give two identical objects the same category label the farther apart they are shown in the display. The primary question being addressed in this study was whether the effects of distance are due to a decreased likelihood of remembering the first object when labeling the second (what we refer to as a stage 1 or sampling effect) or to factors during the actual comparison itself (a stage 2 or decision effect)? Our results showed a significant effect of distance on both the likelihood of giving identical objects the same label as well as on the likelihood of mentioning the first object when labeling the second object in an identical pair. Specifically, as the distance between two identical objects increased, the likelihood of giving them the same label, as well as mentioning their similarity, both decreased. Importantly, the decreased probability of giving the second object the same label seemed entirely due to the decreased probability of remembering (sampling) the first object, as indicated by the menu responses. These results provide strong support for the idea that the effect of temporal distance on free categorization is mainly due to stage 1 factors, specifically to its effect on the availability of the first instance in memory when labeling the second. No strong evidence was found in this experiment supporting a separate distance effect at the comparison-decision stage (i.e., stage 2). Advisors/Committee Members: Clapper, John.

▼ Modern consumers often have experiences where they feel they have the ability to attain desired outcomes in life, whereas sometimes they feel they lack such abilities. Although preliminary work shows that these experiences of high or low control can influence how consumers make choices, the literature lacks an understanding on how feelings of control can impact the evaluation of consumer decision input variables. My dissertation contributes to this area of research by investigating how perceptions of control influence two important consumer decision input variables: the perceived distance towards spatial or temporal targets and the perceived value of one’s time or money resource. In my first essay, I start out by highlighting a seeming discrepancy in the literature. Specifically, prior research has found that people perceive positive objects and locations as physically closer than negative ones. Yet other work has found the opposite to be true for perceptions of temporal distance, where negative future events feel closer than positive ones. Motivated by this seeming discrepancy, I propose that (1) feelings of control can differentially influence how far away valenced (i.e. positive or negative) targets feel in space and time and that (2) the difference in perceived control over space versus time can account for these opposite findings. I provide empirical support for these claims across six studies and one single-paper meta-analysis. In my second essay, I propose that incidental feelings of low (vs. high) control can affect the perceived instrumentality of consumers’ time and money resources. I build these hypotheses based on the literature on control threat and consumer resources. Across five studies, I find that feeling low (vs. high) control heightens people’s perceived instrumentality of time, whereas it decreases their perceived instrumentality of money. Moreover, I further show that this differential effect of control on time vs. money is driven by differences in the perceived self-relevance of the resource. Additionally, two studies explore how such resource evaluations go onto influence consumer spending decisions and consumer satisfaction. The findings contribute to the literature on control threat and resource perceptions while providing insight into how consumers view their resources and spend them. ▼ Spatio-temporal clustering is a new subfield of data mining that is increasingly gaining scientific attention due to the technical advances of location-based or environmental devices that register position, time and, in some cases, other semantic attributes. This process intends to group objects based in their spatial and temporal similarity helping to discover interesting patterns and correlations in large datasets. One of the main challenges of this area is that there are different types of spatio-temporal data and there is no general approach to treat all these types. Another challenge still unresolved is the ability to integrate several dimensions in the clustering process with a general-purpose approach. Moreover, it was also possible to verify that few works address their implementations under the SNN (Shared Nearest Neighbour) algorithm, which gives the opportunity to propose an innovative extension of this particular algorithm. This work intends to implement in the SNN clustering algorithm the ability to deal with spatio-temporal data allowing the integration of space, time and one or more semantic attributes in the clustering process. In this document, background knowledge about clustering, spatial clustering and spatio-temporal clustering are presented along with a summary of the main approaches followed to cluster spatio-temporal data with different clustering algorithms. Based on those approaches, and in the analysis of their advantages and disadvantages, the boundaries of this work are defined in order to incorporate the space, time and semantic attribute dimensions in the SNN algorithm and thus propose the 4D+SNN approach. The results presented in this work are very promising as the approach proposed is able to identify interesting patterns on spatio-temporal data. Concretely, it can identify clusters taking into account simultaneously the spatial and temporal dimension and it also has good results when adding one or more semantic attributes. Neki modeli prepoznaju sličnosti u efektima vremenske i socijalne distance na odlučivanje, ali za to nude parcijalna objašnjenja: preko uključenosti afekata, čiji se značaj zanemaruje sa povećanjem distance ili uključenosti društvenih vrednosti čiji se značaj povećava sa povećanjem distance. Prema teoriji nivoa konstrukcije (engl. Construal level theory, CLT) u osnovi efekta distance na odlučivanje je kognitivni mehanizam nezavisan od uključenosti afekata, socijalnih vrednosti i bilo kojh drugih sadržaja u situaciji odlučivanja: na maloj distanci mentalne reprezentacije (konstrukcije) su konkretne, bogate perifernim detaljima i odnose se na izvodljivost cilja (konstrukcije nižeg nivoa); na velikoj distanci reprezentacije su apstraktne, sa manjim brojem centralnih karakteristika i odnose se na poželjnost cilja (konstrukcije višeg nivoa). Pošavši od ovih pretpostavki osmislili smo studiju od četiri konceptualno povezana ogleda u kojima smo ispitivali: a. da li vremenska i socijalna distanca imaju efekta na odlučivanje (izbor i dopadljivost opcija); b. da li ima sličnosti između efekata vremenske i socijalne distance na odlučivanje; c. da li se dosledno potvrđuju pretpostavke CLT o nivou konstrukcija u osnovi efekata vremenske i socijalne distance na odlučivanje bez obzira na sadržaj/tip konstrukcija višeg nivoa (u kojoj meri su povezane sa društvenim vrednostima) i sadržaj/tip konstrukcija nižeg nivoa (u kojoj meri okolnosti za izvođenje cilja uključuju afekte). Takođe, uporedili smo uloženi kognitivni napor (procenu teškoće odlučivanja i vreme potrebno za donošenje odluke) na različitim nivoima distance, pošto se prema CLT razlike ne očekuju, dok drugi modeli predviđaju razlike u različitom smeru (ulaganje više/manje napora sa povećanjem distance). U pripremnoj fazi testiranja stimulus materijala učestvovalo je 186, a u glavnoj studiji 436 studenata Univerziteta u Beogradu, slučajno raspoređenih u grupe prema nivoima vremenske (Ogledi od 1 do 4) ili socijalne distance (Ogledi 1 i 4). Ispitanicima su prezentovane situacije izbora aktivnosti na fakultetu, a variran je tip konstrukcija nižeg nivoa (afektivne/afektivno neutralne prepreke) i tip konstrukcija višeg nivoa (individualni/društveni ciljevi). Ponuđene opcije su bile opisane tako da imaju suprotstavljene prednosti/slabosti na teškoći izvodljivosti i poželjnosti cilja. ▼ âTimeâ is fleeting. People tend to ponder the needs in the present and develop procrastination for the future. Because of these tendencies, researchers in marketing examine topics such as impulsive buying and purchase in advance. For companies, understanding how consumers perceive time differently is beneficial to their promotion strategy development. Previous research has investigated the impacts of temporal distance and time window. Based on these time perspectives, this research incorporates two moderators in influencing consumer behavior: mental simulation and product type. The study uses experimental design to explore the advertising effects and gift coupon redemption. With the manipulation of different time perspectives, two experiments are conducted. Experiment 1 is a 2 (temporal distance: near future vs. distant future) Ã 2 (mental simulation: process simulation vs. outcome simulation) Ã 2 (product type: search goods vs. experience goods) factorial design. Experiment 2 is a 2 (time window: short vs. long) Ã 2 (mental simulation: process simulation vs. outcome simulation) Ã 2 (product type: search goods vs. experience goods) factorial design. With the eight conditions, the participantsâ intention and behavior are assessed. Results indicate that when promoting a search good, outcome simulation presented in the ad is more effective to participants who see the near future than those who see the distant future. However, in the coupon redemption behavior, when redeeming an experience good, there will be interaction effect between time window and mental simulation. When redeeming an experience good under the long time window condition, outcome simulation gets higher redemption rate than process simulation. While under the short time window condition, process simulation enhances higher redemption rate than outcome simulation. The findings provide marketing insights regarding how to frame time and mental simulation differently in the promotions while product type is considered. ▼ Hermeneutics has always been concerned with understanding, which has led to the development of numerous methods and approaches to assist the interpreter in his own attempt to understand. In text immanent methods, which became very popular over the last century, the final text was analysed and studied on etymological, syntactical and grammatical levels. The interpreter just had to apply the rules of his method objectively in order to expose the truth which was locked up in the text. These approaches were shaken to their core with the bloom of historical criticism. Now, for the first time, the authenticity of the final text of the Bible was openly questioned. This was a major shock to Bible readers. One Old Testament scholar, Gerhard Von Rad, lived in the middle of this whole storm, but instead of rejecting the claims of historical criticism, he used what they offered him to extract meaning from the text. Von Rad used the final text of the Old Testament as a point of departure but then asked how this text developed historically. Through an in-depth study of the text, he discovered sources that stood out as building blocks for the development of the Old Testament - different traditions had come into existence over time and there were drawn together into the final text of the Old Testament. Von Rad discovered the Credo which he identified as the most basic testimony Israel had preserved. He then continued to show how this Credo was interpreted and reinterpreted in every new generation in Israel. With the aid of this Traditionsgeschichte he understood the historical growth of the Old Testament and that help him with his Verstehen of the final text. Hans-Georg Gadamer was a philosopher who lived in the same era. He was also concerned with historical understanding of texts from the past. With his Wirkungsgeschichte he asked about historical interpretations of the text. The constant flow of interpretation and reinterpretation over centuries, helped him understand ancient texts better. He did not see the temporal distance between the original author and the modern interpreter as a threatening abyss but believed that it was rather filled with opportunity. In this dissertation we look at the contributions of Von Rad and Gadamer and how it assists us in understanding Verstehen. Man is a historical being, who exists against the backdrop of history. It is this historical Dasein of man and his Geworfenheit in the world that makes it possible for him to understand texts from the past. Gadamer’s fusion of horizons, rooted in man’s historicity, bridge the gap between the past and the present. Where synchronic text immanent methods reject all subjective influences, Gadamer and Von Rad point to the nature of man’s inescapable historical being – man comes to understand by dealing honestly with his own Geworfenheit in this world. We learn that Verstehen is not concerned with an absolute truth that must be gained as an object, but Verstehen is an on-going historical process involving man’s whole being. L'innovation constitue un facteur de croissance particulièrement critique dans le secteur des hautes technologies. Or, le taux de lancements aboutissant à des échecs commerciaux y est bien plus élevé dans ce secteur que dans d'autres industries. Ce constat a incité des chercheurs à s'intéresser de plus près aux spécificités des innovations technologiques par rapport aux autres innovations.En particulier, Hoeffler (2003) constate que les innovations technologiques se distinguent par le fait qu'elles suscitent deux formes spécifiques d'incertitude : la première est liée à la difficulté de compréhension des nouveaux bénéfices, et la seconde aux coûts d'apprentissage du produit. Castano et alii (2008) montrent que ces deux formes d'incertitude sont plus ou moins saillantes dans les pensées du consommateur, selon l'échéance à laquelle il envisage l'achat d'un produit technologique, appelée « distance temporelle ». La robustesse de ces résultats a été confirmée lors d'une étude préliminaire. Par ailleurs, nous avons eu recours à deux techniques de simulation mentale anticipative pour réduire la double incertitude du consommateur ressentie à l'égard d'innovations semi-continues et discontinues. Nos résultats indiquent que lorsque l'achat est envisagé dans un délai proche, la simulation « orientée vers le processus » réduit l'incertitude liée aux coûts d'apprentissage et l'anxiété du consommateur, et augmente l'intention d'achat et d'utilisation du produit. A plus long terme, c'est la simulation « orientée vers le résultat » qui favorise l'intention d'achat et d'utilisation, en réduisant l'incertitude envers les bénéfices et en augmentant l'optimisme du consommateur. Les mécanismes par lesquels l'interaction entre la distance temporelle et la simulation mentale agit sur les réactions et comportements du consommateur ont été mis au jour dans cette thèse. De plus, nous avons démontré que les effets bénéfiques de cette interaction se produisaient pour les consommateurs experts, mais qu'ils ne se produisaient pas pour les consommateurs non experts. Cette recherche pose donc une limite à l'utilisation de cette interaction comme technique marketing pour favoriser l'adoption d'innovations technologiques. Cinq études ont été réalisées dans le cadre de cette thèse, dont deux en collaboration avec IDEAs Laboratory, une entreprise grenobloise opérant dans le secteur des hautes technologies.

▼ The aim of my dissertation is to understand how people make decisions about their health. Decision-making is a complex psychological process. Health behavior change theories have suggested a number of factors that inform decision-making and lead to behavior change. One of the factors that influences the decision-making process is the time at which behavioral performance is relevant, but this has not been tested and replicated in a health behavior context. Time refers to when we are asking people to engage in a health behavior (i.e. exercise this week or a year from now). It is essential to explore the role of time reference, because any systematic differences time reference produces in the decision-making process will affect whether and how we address time references in designing persuasive health messages. Alternately, if it produces no systematic differences, this will affect persuasive message design as well in that we may not have to consider it when designing health messages. We can use theory to guide us in understanding and predicting health behavior. The more we understand about how people make decisions about engaging in certain health behaviors, the more accurately we can predict these health behaviors. Accurately predicting health behaviors has implications for communication research and health message design. Using a theory-based approach helps us better understand and predict health behavior decision-making, which is a necessary first step to persuasive health message design. In the present research, I use reasoned action theory and construal level theory. Reasoned action theory is a behavioral theory that has proven efficacy in identifying factors that underlie any given behavior. Construal level theory is a social cognitive psychological theory that argues that people construe a behavior abstractly when framed in distal, far future terms and concretely when framed in proximal, near future terms. These theories are being used in concert to test how temporal distance affects intention formation. To this end, my research is a series of three nested studies, beginning with formative research on my target audience and several health behaviors and ending with suggestions for persuasive message design. Study 1 The primary goal of Study 1 was to identify two health behaviors that resonated with my target audience from a set of four to move forward with. Because behavioral decision making is belief-dependent, and thus beliefs are my units of analysis in this dissertation, I needed to identify a behavior that primed enough salient beliefs to make meaningful comparisons. Though no standard exists for the exact number of beliefs necessary to make meaningful comparisons, I decided to move forward with the two health behaviors that primed the greatest mean beliefs per participant. The secondary goal of Study 1 was to begin testing time frame effects on desirability and feasibility beliefs. The present study examined the effect of Time Perspective (TP), i.e. cognitive arrangement of the human experiences into temporal dimensions, and Temporal Distance (TD), i.e. the perceived proximity of an event in time, on moral judgment. The study included 132 participants that completed the Swedish version of Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (S-ZTPI) and made moral judgments of transgression of ethical rules depicted in the near vs. distant future. A main effect of TP was revealed meaning that transgression of ethical rules, as predicted, was judged more immoral by Past-Positive and Future orientation compared to Present-Hedonistic and Past-Negative orientation. No main effect of TD was revealed. The interaction of TP x TD was significant and in the predicted direction, but only Present-Hedonistic orientation was significantly affected by TD: distant compared to near future scenarios were judged less immoral by this TP. Importance, limitations and elaborations of the present study were discussed.

I föreliggande studie undersöktes hur Tidsperspektiv (TP), d.v.s. kognitivt inordnande av mänskliga erfarenher i tidsmässiga dimensioner, och Tidmässigt Avstånd (TA), d.v.s. upplevd närhet av händelser i tid, påverkar moralisk bedömning. Studien omfattade 132 deltagare, vilka fyllde i den svenska versionen av Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (S-ZTPI) och gjorde moraliska bedömningar av överträdelser av etiska regler framställda i en nära vs. avlägsen framtid. En huvudeffekt av TP framkom, vilken innebar att överträdelse av etiska regler bedömdes som mer omoraliskt utifrån Positiv-Dåtidsorientering och Framtidsorientering jämfört med Hedonistisk-Nutidsorientering och Negativ-Dåtidsorientering. Ingen huvudeffekt av TA framkom. Interaktionen mellan TP och TA var signifikant och i linje med prediktionerna även om endast Hedonistisk-Nutidsorientering påverkades signifikant av TA: tidsmässigt avlägsna vs. närliggande scenarion bedömdes som mindre omoraliska utifrån detta TP. Vikten av studien samt begränsningar och tänkbara uppföljningar av studien diskuteras också.

▼ This dissertation investigates some of the antecedents and consequences of stability and change in multinational enterprises (MNEs). It focuses on the strategic level decisions of MNEs in their international activities. Essay 1 studies the role of the development and deployment of decision rules, as an organizational capability, since they may lead to consistency and stability in MNEs’ international strategies. By focusing on recurring and high-stakes strategic resource allocation decisions, the study disentangles the time and space dimensions of the deployment of capabilities. The findings indicate a positive effect on performance for MNEs’ spatial consistency across subsidiaries for expatriation (as a repetitive decision), and a negative effect for spatial consistency in equity ownership (as a quasi-repetitive decision). The study also observes a positive effect on performance for temporal persistence in expatriation. Regarding the consequences of stability and change, Essays 2 and 3 investigate the MNE’s evolution in the global space and the knowledge it acquires and amasses in its knowledge-base. This knowledge-base transcends the learning lessons originating from a firm’s home country to a broader evolved home-base which incorporates all foreign subsidiaries of the MNE and its home country. Distance as a highly popular concept in international business is then revisited and reconceptualized. Essays 2 and 3 argue that the internationalization process of the firm shifts its reliance on the original home country as a source of knowledge, to the broader domain of the MNE’s activities and the portfolio of its locations. It may either rely on the knowledge from all its subsidiary locations, or on the learnings from the most similar location in the portfolio to the focal host country. These two approaches lead to theoretical development of two (multilevel) distance constructs at the MNE level: average distance measure based on a composition approach and minimum distance measure using a compilation approach. The former has already been introduced in the literature and the latter is a newly introduced and developed measure in this dissertation. Essay 3 provides a comparative analysis to compare the predictive power of the new and extant distance measures. Overall, the findings of this dissertation indicate the superiority (and complementarity) of the two MNE-level distance measures.

▼ The Construal Level Theory posits that future events are differentially construed, and thus evaluated, as a function of whether they are to be experienced in the near or distant future. For goal-directed future consumption, specifically, the theory postulates that in the distant future, events are construed in terms of goal-relevant features, whereas in the near future, events are construed in terms of goal-distant features. Little research has been done, however, in order to investigate both (1) the boundary conditions in which the effects predicted by the Construal Level Theory are likely to occur and (2) the psychological processes that underlie the effect of temporal distance. Based on the examination of the hypothesized origin to the phenomena proposed by the Construal Level Theory, the present research is motivated by a concern to investigate such a boundary condition and a psychological process. In three experiments, we show that thoughtfulness and confidence play important roles in the occurrence of the influence of temporal distance. The first two experiments provide the first evidence of thoughtfulness as a theoretically informative moderator to the phenomena proposed by the Construal Level Theory. Specifically, the effect of temporal distance is a result of thoughtful consideration of temporal distance, rather than a non-thoughtful heuristic process. More importantly, the last two experiments provide evidence of attitude confidence that underlies the effect of temporal distance on evaluations under thoughtful conditions. Our findings suggest that attitude confidence influences evaluations (1) by at least partially mediating the construal level process and also (2) by exerting an independent influence of the construal level process. The identification of attitude confidence as a key psychological process deepens our understanding of consumers' evaluations for goal-directed future consumption as well as of the Construal Level Theory per se.
