▼ This paper describes the design, construction, and testing of advanced power devices for use in electric vehicles. Power devices are necessary to supply electricity to different parts of the vehicle; for example, energy is stored in a battery as
direct current (DC) power, but the motor requires alternating current (AC) power. Therefore, power electronics can alter the energy to be delivered as DC or AC. In order to carry more power, multiple devices can be used together just as 10 people can carry more weight than 1 person. However, because the devices are not perfect, there can be slight differences in the performance of one device to another. One device may have to carry more current than another device which could cause failure earlier than intended. In this research project, multiple power devices were placed into a package, or "module." In a control module, the devices were selected with similar properties to one another. In an experimental module, the devices were selected with properties very different from one another. It was determined that the when the devices were 17.7% difference, there was 119.9 µJ more energy loss and it was 22.2°C hotter than when the difference was only 0.6%. However, the severity of the difference was dependent on how multiple device characteristics interacted with one another. It may be possible to compensate some of the impact of device differences in one characteristic with opposing differences in another device characteristic.

▼ LEDs are being developed as the next generation lighting source due to their high
efficiency and long life time, with a potential to save $15 billion per year in energy cost
by 2020. State of the art LEDs are capable of emitting light at ~115 lm/W and have
lifetime over 50,000 hours. It has already surpassed the efficiency of incandescent light
sources, and is even comparable to that of fluorescent lamps. Since the total luminous
flux generated by a single LED is considerably lower than other light sources, to be
competitive the total light output must be increased with higher forward currents and
packages of multiple LEDs. However, both of these solutions would increase the
junction temperature, which degrades the performance of the LED – as the operating
temperature goes up, the light intensity decreases, the lifetime is reduced, and the light
color changes. The word "junction" refers to the p-n junction within the LED-chips.
Critical to the temperature rise in high powered LED sources is the very large heat flux at
the die level (100-500 W/cm2) which must be addressed in order to lower the operating
temperature in the die. It is possible to address the spreading requirements of high
powered LED die through the use of power electronic substrates for efficient heat
dissipation, especially when the die are directly mounted to the power substrate in a chipon-
board (COB) architecture. COB is a very attractive technology for packaging power
LEDs which can lead improved price competiveness, package integration and thermal
performance.
In our work high power LED-chips (>1W/die) implementing COB architectures
were designed and studied. Substrates for these packaging configurations include two
types of power electronic substrates; insulated-metal-substrates (IMS) and
direct-
bonded-
copper (
DBC). To lower the operating temperature both the thermal impedance of the
dielectric layer and the heat spreading in the
copper circuit layers must be studied. In the
analysis of our architectures, several lead free solders and thermal interface materials
were considered. We start with the analysis of single-chip LED package and extend the
result to the multi-chip arrays. The thermal resistance of the system is only a function of
geometry and thermal conductivity if temperature-independent properties are used. Thus
through finite element analysis (ANSYS) the effect of geometry and thermal conductivity
on the thermal resistance was investigated. The drawback of finite element analysis is
that many simulations must be conducted whenever the geometry or the thermal
conductivity is changed. To bypass same of the computational load, a thermal resistance
network was developed. We developed analytical expressions of the thermal resistance,
especially focusing on the heat spreading effect at the substrate level. Finally, multi-chip
LED arrays were analyzed through finite element analysis and an analytical analysis;
where die-spacing is another important factor to determine the junction temperature.

▼ This thesis presents an experimental study of the effects of ultrafast laser ablation on the mechanical properties of metal laminates followed by FEA simulation to elucidate future experimental potential. The metals investigated are
copper, niobium, and
copper/niobium accumulative roll
bonded (ARB) laminates. The two laminate materials in this study have a nominal layer thickness of 1.8 microns and 65 nanometers; the effects of the laser processing on the ARB materials are characterized in the rolling direction as well as the transverse direction as the material exhibits anisotropic properties. The aforementioned materials are examined via scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy techniques to obtain changes in layer restructuring and modification. The motivation of this study is to characterize the heat affected zone in the materials produced by ultrafast laser processing to determine whether ultrafast laser ablation is a viable method for creating artificial cracks for SEM in-situ mini cantilever fracture testing. A parameter space is defined to attempt to capture an acceptable set of laser settings which both reduce the heat affected zone and create an etched geometry mimicking a crack into the sample to facilitate crack propagation in bend testing. Finally, simulation is performed using ANSYS to determine sample geometry constraints induced by both the laser-notched crack tips geometry and the limitations of the experimental apparatus used for in-situ testing. Additionally, simulations will provide insight into the plastic behavior of the layered structure.'

▼ The thermal management of power electronics is critical to the long term reliability of these devices. In this work, three concepts which allow the placement of advanced cooling solutions close to power electronic die are investigated through the creation of advanced substrate technologies. First, two phase cooling was integrated with
direct bonded copper power substrates by sintering
copper particles directly onto the back side to allow for evaporative two phase cooling. The work experimentally investigated the impact of the thickness of the
copper microporous layer as well as its size relative to the thermal test die on the heat transfer performance. The second methodology developed a novel substrate that replaces the
DBC by having a cold plate with integrated AlN dielectric and circuit layer. A low-cost bonding method which created a low thermal resistance composite bonding layer was developed and demonstrated which allows low thermal resistance between the die and the cooling fluid. Finally, a third technique which uses a glass interposer with
copper vias to bond the power die was investigated as a third packaging methodology. This strategy was explored through finite element analysis. Overall, this thesis presents several new pathways to improving the thermal management of wide bandgap power electronic and RF devices.

The context of this work is the three-dimensional integration of electronic devices. Among the various techniques allowing to assemble both mechanically and electrically stacked chips, the direct…

laccases, ceruloplasmin, and rusticyanin, were characterised in detail
and employed for the construction of both self-charging and conventional biosupercapacitors.
First, similarities and particularities of oxygen electroreduction
vs. bioelectroreduction were reviewed. Moreover, being a promising candidate
for the construction of autotolerant implantable biocathodes, the electrochemistry
of human ceruloplasmin was revisited. For the first time, a clear
bioelectrocatalytic reduction of oxygen on ceruloplasmin modified electrodes
was shown. Second, computational design combined with directed evolution
resulted in a high redox potential mutated laccase, GreeDo, with increased redox
potential of the T1 site, increased activity towards high redox potential
mediators, as well as enhanced stability. Third, GreeDo was electrochemically
characterised in detail. The mutant exhibited higher open circuit potential
values and onset potentials for oxygen bioelectroreduction compared to the parental laccase, OB-1. Moreover, the operational stability of GreeDo modified
graphite electrodes was found to be more than 2 h in a decidedly acidic
electrolyte, in agreement with the extended operational and storage stabilities
of the enzyme in acidic solutions. Fourth, multi-cell single-electrolyte glucose/
oxygen biodevices with adjustable open-circuit and operating voltages,
which are independent on the difference in equilibrium redox potentials of the
two redox couples, gluconolactone/glucose and oxygen/water, viz. 1.18 V, but
dependent on the number of half-cells in the biodevice construction, were designed
and tested. The biodevices were made from tubular graphite electrodes
with electropolymerised poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) modified with
Trametes hirsuta laccase and Neurospora crassa cellobiose dehydrogenase as the cathodic and anodic biocatalysts, respectively. Due to the interplay between
faradaic and non-faradaic electrochemical processes, as well as between
ionic and electronic conductivities, the open-circuit voltage of the self-charged
biodevice is extraordinarily high, reaching 3 V, when seven biosupercapacitors
operating in a common electrolyte were connected in series. Moreover,
glucose/oxygen biodevices could be externally discharged at an operating
voltage exceeding the maximal limiting open-circuit value of 1.24 V for the
complete glucose oxidation. Last but not least, a conventional biosupercapacitor,
i.e. a biodevice lacking self-charging ability, was composed of Acidithiobacillus
ferrooxidans rusticyanin modified gold electrodes. The complete biodevices
as well as separate electrodes were thoroughly characterised electrochemically.
The symmetrical biosupercapacitor based on two identical gold
electrodes modified with rusticyanin is…

▼ The goal of this bachelor´s thesis is to evaluate short-circuit conditions at the Sokolnice 110kV switching station before and after installation of a T402 transformer – before and after application of a
direct 400/110kV transformation. By evaluating these conditions determine whether the originally installed protective elements (power circuit-breakers) are capable of fulfilling the new short-circuit requirements at the switching station. The thesis consists of two parts: the first part introduces the theory required to evaluate the short-circuit conditions at the switching station, while the second part calculates the actual short-circuit currents and power outputs. The methods used for calculation are sequential simplification and
symmetrical components.

▼ The purpose of this study was to assess the intrinsic and contextual data quality of the Dutch
DBC Information System (DIS) database, which contains all data relevant to the healthcare reimbursements. The intrinsic data quality was examined from a process point of view by determining the organizational and technical issues negatively influencing the data quality. Focus here was on the Dutch hospitals. The contextual data quality was examined as the "fit for use" of these data to evaluate efficiency and patient safety performances of the hospitals. This is currently unexplored, although traditional datasets used for scientific research of these contexts are no longer properly available and alternatives have to be found.
A qualitative research method was used for this research: eighteen field experts were interviewed in nineteen semi-structured expert interviews. The experts represented several relevant stakeholder groups such as the internal hospital administration, the DIS itself, internal and external hospital consultants and scientists specialized in efficiency or patient safety research. To structure the interviews and analyze the results, a data quality framework was constructed based on existing literature.
The interviews were recorded and transcribed. These transcripts served as the resulting (qualitative) dataset and were analyzed with a grounded-theory approach.
The results of these analyses indicated that several organizational and technical issues exist in the hospitals and the
DBC system, negatively influencing the (intrinsic) DIS data quality. Most notably the issues pertain to the registration of the performed activities: the management of the hospital activity codes and aggregation to the national activity (ZA) codes used for DIS. Recommendations are provided to improve these issues and ultimately the DIS data quality. Despite the existing issues, the data are still suited for analysis, if used properly. For the evaluation of efficiency, the data have good potential to analyze the technical efficiency of the production (i.e., provided care). For evaluation of patient safety, data mining approaches can be applied on the data to identify unexpected deviations in the treatment path. This research provides the required business and data understanding for such analyses; the actual performing of these analyses are left for future research.

During 50 years, semiconductor technology has been evolving in exponential rates in both productivity and performance. By following a steady technological path that consists in scaling down transistors and increasing electronic components density, the semiconductor industry was able to meet the increasing demand in high performance, low power consumption and low cost devices. However by constantly shrinking devices geometries and increasing functionalities, semiconductor industry is facing physical limitations in addition to more and more overwhelming parasitic effects. Since further miniaturisation would be made impossible in a near future, 3D integration appears as a promising approach to go beyond planar integration possibilities. This approach allows high performances and various functionalities compounds achievements. 3D integration consists on various chips stacking with vertical and electrical interconnects. The metallic…

Electrothermal and electromigration failure are likely to occur on copper inductor and interconnection in integrated passive devices for wireless telephony application. Electromigration is not a concern considering the high thickness of the copper and the application but the Joule heating is the main restriction on the dimensions during the component design. Joule heating on interconnections and inductors has been studied by electrothermal characterization and simulation. We have shown that Joule heating depends of several parameters such as material layers parameters and component dimensions. Design of experiments methodology has been used in order to model the inductor and interconnection electrothermal behavior. A self-heating predictive model has been determined allowing the study and the determination of dimensions impact in direct current. In radiofrequency, a self-heating measurement methodology has been determined allowing its characterization at wafer level. A correlation between direct current and radiofrequency is not satisfactory and a weak coupling between an electromagnetic and electrothermal simulator has been performed, providing the self-heating simulation under radiofrequency stress.

▼ This study focused on the development and evaluation of die-attach material and substrate technology for high-temperature applications. For the die-attach material, a low-temperature sintering technique enabled by a nanoscale silver paste was developed for attaching large-area (>100 mm2) semiconductor chips. The nanoscale silver paste can be sintered at a much lower temperature (<300 °C) than in the conventional sintering process (>800 °C), and at the same time reached about 80 vol% bulk density. Analyses of the sintered joints by scanning acoustic imaging and electron microscopy showed that the attachment layer had a uniform microstructure with micron-sized porosity with the potential for high reliability under high temperature applications.
We also investigated the effects of a large temperature cycling range on the reliability of
direct bonded aluminum (DBA) substrate. DBA substrates with different metallization were thermally cycled between -55 °C and 250 °C. Unlike with the
DBC substrate, no delamination of aluminum from the aluminum nitride ceramic base-plate was observed for the DBA substrates. However, aluminum surface became roughened during the thermal cycling test. It was believed that in the high-temperature regime, the significant amount of thermomechanical stress and grain-scale deformation would cause recrystallization and grain-boundary sliding in the aluminum layer, which would further lead to the observed increase in surface roughness. The influence of metallization over the aluminum surface on the extent of surface roughness was also characterized.
In addition to evaluating the reliability of nanoscale silver paste and DBA substrate individually, this work also conducted experiments that characterize the compatibility of nanoscale silver paste on DBA substrate in terms of reliability in a high-temperature environment. In the large-area attachment, the sintered silver was found to be very compliant with the deformed aluminum. The device-to-silver and silver-to-substrate interfaces remain intact after up to 800 cycles. No large scale delamination and horizontal cracks were observed. However, some vertical crack lines began to show after certain number of cycles. It was believed that these vertical cracks were caused by the thermomechanical stresses in the sintered silver layer. In addition, with regard to the thermal performance, since most of the heat was generated from the semiconductor devices and were transferred vertically through the die-attach material to substrate, these vertical cracks were also considered more advantageous than horizontal cracks.

Condensation of 1,8,13-tris(mercaptomethyl)triptycene and tris(bromomethyl)methane yields the in,in-cyclophane 30 in 8% yield with two inwardly directed methine groups. The X-ray analysis clearly shows that it is the in,in-isomer. The proton NMR spectrum displays an obvious coupling between the two methine hydrogens, which was proved by selectively irradiation one of the apical methine proton. The coupling constant is 2.0 Hz, which is the largest through-space coupling observed so far. Based on DFT and MP2 calculations, the hydrogen-hydrogen non-bonded contact distance is estimated to be 1.50-1.53 Å.
Two in,in-cyclophanes 31 and 56, containing one or two methyl groups in their central cavities, have been synthesized, crystallized and fully characterized by ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography. Cyclophane 31 is the first example of an in,in-cyclophane with a methyl group inside the cavity. The IR spectrum clearly shows that the Si-H stretch is blue-shifted from 2177 cm-1 in an acyclic model to 2269 cm-1. Based on computational studies, cyclophane 31 has a very short non-bonded H – CH3 distance of about 2.30 Å. Cyclophane 56 does not have short non-bonded contact distance, but it is the first example of a macrobicyclic compound that contains two inwardly directed methyl groups.
Three cyclophanes with the formula (C28H31PS3)n, where n = 1 or 2, were isolated from the base-promoted macrocyclization of tris(2-mercaptophenyl)phosphine and tris(3-bromopropyl)methane. Spectroscopic and X-ray analysis showed them to be the in,in-isomer 32, the in,out-isomer 60, and a dimeric in,out,in,out-isomer 61. Compounds 32 and 61 display approximately C3-symmetric and Ci-symmetric structures, respectively, in the crystal, but compound 60 adopts two distinct low-symmetry conformations in the solid state. In each case, the observed structures correspond to the lowest energy conformations of their respective isomers as calculated at the B3PW91/6-31G(d) level of theory. The in,in-isomer 32 displays a close contact between the phosphine in-lone pair and the in-methine group, with through-space spin-spin coupling constants of JPH = 9 Hz and JPC = 24 Hz, the latter of which appears to be the largest reported phosphorus-carbon through-space coupling constant.
Dodecaphenyltetracene (75), the largest perphenylacene yet prepared, was synthesized from known tetraphenylfuran, hexaphenylisobenzofuran, and 1,2,4,5-tetrabromo-3,6-diphenylbenzene in three steps. The X-ray structure of the deep red, highly luminescent 75 shows it to be a D2-symmetric molecule with an end-to-end twist of 97o. The central acene is encapsulated by the peripheral phenyl substituents, and as a result, the molecule is relatively unreactive and even displays reversible electrochemical oxidation and reduction.
Decaphenylphenanthrene (77), the first nonlinear perphenyl polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon to be prepared so far, has been made from tetraphenylfuran and…

▼ The aromaticity-modulated hydrogen bonding (AMHB) model was applied to understand how “aromaticity gain” influences the association strengths of multipoint hydrogen-
bonded arrays and as a driving force for electronic complementarity in base pairing. The block-localized wavefuntion (BLW) method was used to quantify the degree of “aromaticity gain” (i.e., the amount of increased cyclic π-electron delocalization) in arrays upon hydrogen bonding. An excellent linear relationship was found between the computed gas-phase association free energies and the amount of increased cyclic π-electron delocalization energies of 26 triply (r = 0.940) and 20 quadruply (r = 0.959). Computational analyses for 57 hydrogen-
bonded base pairs also document excellent linear correlation between the gas-phase association energies and the degree of aromaticity gain of paired bases (r = 0.949). Hydrogen bonding interactions can polarize the ring π-electrons to increase (or decrease) cyclic 4n + 2 π-electron delocalization, resulting in aromaticity gain (or loss) in complexes, and become strengthened (or weakened). Our findings point to important limitations of the secondary electrostatic interaction (SEI) model, suggesting the importance of considering aromaticity gain in arrays as a relevant factor for determining the stability of multipoint hydrogen-
bonded complexes. This work shows that aromaticity gain increases the inherent association strengths of hydrogen-
bonded complexes. Potential implications of the AMHB model for improving nucleic acid force-fields and for designing robust unnatural base pairs are also discussed.

▼ The non-isolated POL converters are widely used in computers, telecommunication systems, portable electronics, and many other applications. These converters are usually constructed using discrete components, and operated at a lower frequency around 200 ~ 600 kHz to achieve a decent efficiency at the middle of 80\'s%. The passive components, such as inductors and capacitors, are bulky, and they occupy a considerable foot-print. As the power demands increase for POL converters and the limited real estate of the mother board, the POL converters must be made significantly smaller than what they have demonstrated to date. To achieve these goals, two things have to happen simultaneously. The first is a significant increase in the switching frequency to reduce the size and weight of the inductors and capacitors. The second is to integrate passive components, especially magnetics, with active components to realize the needed power density. Today, this concept has been demonstrated at a level less than 5A and a power density around 300-700W/in3 by using silicon-based power semiconductors. This might address the need of small hand-held equipment such as PDAs and smart phones. However, it is far from meeting the needs for applications, such as netbook, notebook, desk-top and server applications where tens and hundreds of amperes are needed. After 30 years of silicon MOSFET development, the silicon has approached its theoretical limits. The recently emerged GaN transistors as a possible candidate to replace silicon devices in various power conversion applications. GaN devices are high electron mobility transistors (HEMT) and have higher band-gap, higher electron mobility, and higher electron velocity than silicon devices, and offer the potential benefits for high frequency power conversions. By implementing the GaN device, it is possible to build the POL converter that can achieve high frequency, high power density, and high efficiency at the same time. GaN technology is in its early stage; however, its significant gains are projected in the future. The first generation GaN devices can outperform the state-of-the-art silicon devices with superior FOM and packaging. The objective of this work is to explore the design of high frequency, high power density 12 V input POL modules with GaN devices and the 3D integration technique. This work discusses the fundamental differences between the enhancement mode and depletion mode GaN transistors, the effect of parasitics on the performance of the high frequency GaN POL, the 3D technique to integrate the active layer with LTCC magnetic substrate, and the thermal design of a high density module using advanced substrates with improved thermal conductivity. The hardware demonstrators are two 12 V to 1.2 V highly integrated 3D POL modules, the single phase 10 A module and two phase 20 A module, all built with depletion mode GaN transistors and low profile LTCC inductors.

▼ Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
In 2004 and again in 2009, the Cochrane collaboration reviewed orthodontic clinical practice on retention. The review found; “there are insufficient data on which to base our clinical practice on retention at present”. The Aims of this study were two; the first was to review the effectiveness, durability and dental health impacts of bonded retainers (BRs) that have been in place for more than 15 years. The second was to discover the opinions of dentists and patients on comparing BRs to removable retainers (RRs). Method This was a 15 year retrospective study which reviewed 61 patients who had undergone conventional fixed appliance treatment with the chief researcher (CR) prior to 1993. Study sample size calculations required 44 BR study group and 44 RR control group patients for a valid analysis. Overall, 46 patients had experience with 55 BRs and 43 had experience with 55 RRs; 28 patients had worn both a BR and a RR at the same time and were thereby included as paired observations in both groups. All 61 participants completed a specifically designed questionnaire relative to their orthodontic treatment experience. They also underwent a clinical examination, had a series of intra-oral and extra-oral digital images and an OPG radiograph taken. Seventy one dentists who had referred patients to the CR over the previous 25 years were sent a confidential questionnaire; to be completed anonymously for their opinions on RRs and BRs. Statistical analyses were carried out using SPSS V16 (2008) and statistical significance was set at the 0.05 level. A Newcastle University statistician worked with the CR in analysing the results and compared them with those of four independent specialist examiners using Bland- Altman plots and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient (SCC) analyses. Results The CR’s measures were found to be reliable and valid. After 15 years, the BRs were 100% effective at maintaining acceptable alignment while 53% of the control group had unacceptable alignment. The BRs had a unit composite bond/wire fracture rate of 0.58% per annum. The BRs did not produce any clinically significant negative dental health impacts. The majority of patients and dentists rated BRs as superior to RRs. Conclusions After 15 years, BRs were found to be adequately durable, effective at stabilising the anterior dentition and they did not produce adverse dental health effects. The majority of patients felt BRs improved their quality of life.

Physical Chemistry - Environmental Physical

količine i načina dolaženja 3H u vode. Padavine predstavljaju
Putem padavina, tritijum
dospeva u površinske vode. U Beogradu se, u Institutu za nuklearne
nauke Vinča, od 1976. god. vrši ispitivanje sadržaja tritijuma u
sakupljenim uzorcima padavina i površinskih voda. Zbog postojanja
distribuciju tritijuma u padavinama u samom Institiutu, a takođe i
na drugim referentnim meteorološkim stanicama (Zeleno Brdo i Usek).
Usled moguće kontaminacije reka Save i Dunava tritijumom zbog niza
vremenska promena koncentracije tritijuma u dugom vremenskom
intervalu od 1985 – 2009. godine. S obzirom na činjenicu da se
srednja koncentracija tritijuma u padavinama i u površinskim vodama
1219 RackBeta. Određeni su parametri koji definišu sam proces
elektrolize, separacioni faktor, parametar obogaćenja i faktor

▼ This research project was carried out in Winnipeg Manitoba between October, 1970 and April, 1971. It is an exploratory study in which the authors used the concepts of complementary and
symmetrical communication to code family interaction. Of the twenty-two families who were contacted through the Psychiatric Out-Patient Department of the Winnipeg General Hospital, nine consented to take part in the study. Complementary and
symmetrical communication interaction elicited by a structured interview was tape recorded and coded for the two concepts. The results were correlated with the descriptions of the patient's behavior as recorded on the hospital charts. It was found that family interaction could be coded as
symmetrical or complementary and that there was some relationship between communication patterns, descriptions of behaviour and the spouse who was labeled as the identified patient.

▼ This project is concerned with the process of initiating layout changes in a New Zealand business. The business that is being investigated, Cableways, operates a bar, a bottle store, a bistro and a gaming room. The bar and gaming room are the focus of this report in with regards to layout changes.
The process started with detailed planning and evaluation of the existing setting. A layout primitive was initially constructed that provided an insight into the current layout of the business. A model was then used to facilitate changes in layout. It began with establishing the likely future considerations that will impact on the operation of the business. The physical functions and their needs are determined from the layout primitive. The space requirements of each function are analysed before the relationship between the patrons that use them is discussed.
Using the original layout primitive of Cableways, and the information gathered above, four different designs were constructed. All four provided different scenarios of layout plans, with the aim of improving current layout. They were evaluated on their ability to meet certain requirements, and the most appropriate design was chosen. It is from this process that option three is recommended for the final step of the process, populating the layout.
There are three reasons why option three has been chosen. Firstly it better satisfies the needs of Cableways when compared to the other options. Secondly it meets the three critical aspects of layout decisions suggested in the literature of planning that is strategic, and in unison with the operations strategy. Thirdly the potential benefits to be gained from this option far out weigh the remaining three.
The design of option three (provided in figure 8) needs to be accurately reproduced to represent measurements and scale. From this a feasibility study can be undertaken to determine whether the option is suitable. If such a study does not identify any problems with the design, then it is recommended that construction begin at a time that is most suitable. The resulting changes should lead to a competitive advantage for Cableways.

▼ The question of how the physical environment of a workspace can impact creativity has been approached from the standpoint of specific, concrete physical variables. To date, no research has categorized different layouts of open-plan offices or examined the different layouts affects on creative cognition and behavior. Consequently, the present study addressed this gap by comparing participants' creative cognition and behavior outcomes in the same room, arranged either homogeneously (low variety, low differentiation, and rectilinear shapes) or heterogeneously (high variety, high differentiation, and organic shapes). Creativity was measured through a similarity finding task and a brainstorming task. Participants' perceptions of the spaces, and what activities should happen in the spaces, were also recorded. A proposed mechanism of the
layout influencing exploration and curiosity was explored with surveys. As was expected, participants in the heterogeneous space showed more abstract thinking than participants in the homogeneous space. Creative generation in the brainstorming task was unaffected by the difference in
layout. Participants in the heterogeneous condition selected more unusual uses for the space than participants in the homogeneous room. Limitations and a future research direction are discussed.

The subject of my functional thesis was to design and process a publish to the Satakunnan sairaanhoitopiiri. The publish present projects Yhteisvoimin kotona and Pois syrjästä. This publication was made in two versions – printed and online magazine. This thesis theory deals mostly press related matters since online-version is based on print-version only that it is chanced to interactive pdf-file which was published in the Satakunnan sairaanhoitopiiri´s web-site. The thesis does not tell every detail that includes press but only things that were relevant to this joint project publication.

▼ Tämän opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli tehdä layout-suunnitelma Sataservice Oy:lle. Sataservicelle on valmistunut uusi 1000 m² hallitila, johon yrityksen koko sähkökonehuollon osasto on siirtymässä. Muutoksella on vaikutus koko tehtaan layouttiin.
The purpose of this thesis was to create a layout plan for Sataservice Oy. Sataservice Oy has completed a new 1000 m² hall space where the company's entire electricity machine maintenance is moving. This change has an impact on the entire factory layout. The main objective of layout plan is to achieve the company more efficient, cleaner and safety. Therefore, the expanded area enabled to increase the amounts of shelves, clearer passageways, better working facilities, clearer machine layout and more integrated waste sorting points. Both primary, and secondary sources, were used during implementation. The primary sources consisted of interviews, as well as practical observations. Secondary sources consisted of books and internet sources. I also used company’s own layout plan where I build my own final layout. My own creating for hall-layout comprised of modeling machines, shelves, passage-ways and safety markings. After this, all components were moved to the right places. In the end, I made a final hall-layout, which was conducted with autocad modeling software. Hall-layout was designed in conjunction with the company. It takes into account both the company’s point of view and my own ideas. Company mostly uses the final hall-layout in near future.

▼ Tämän opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli suunnitella kauhavalaisen, sänkyjä ja sohvia valmistavan huonekaluyrityksen, Unico Finland Oy:n, varastotilojen uusi layout. Työ rajattiin koskemaan ainoastaan varastotiloja, joten ulkopuolelle jätettiin muun muassa tuotantotilat. Työn avulla pyrittiin selkeyttämään varastotilojen järjestystä ja tehostamaan tuotteiden keräilyvaihetta.
Teoreettinen viitekehys koostuu kahdesta osasta.
The purpose of this thesis was to design a new layout for Unico Finland Ltd, a bed and sofa manufacturer based in Kauhava, Western Finland. The layout plans were made only for the storage facilities. The main focus of the thesis was to clarify the order of goods in the warehouse and to enhance the efficacy of the collecting phase of goods.
The theoretical framework consists of two sections, which both have equally important roles. The first part deals with the theory of warehousing, and the second part focuses on layout planning. There are three layout plans in the thesis, one for the dispatch department, one for the warehouse, and one for the newly renovated Kaarihalli.
As a result of the thesis, a new layout was designed for Unico Finland Ltd. The new layout covers the whole warehouse area. The areas and shelves for each product were defined by customer groups, using the ABC analysis. No fixed shelves were defined, because the number of products depends on orders, varying therefore a great deal. The new layout is a functional and a logic solution, and the company will benefit from it financially. The entire thesis can also be utilized when designing other similar warehouse layouts.

▼ Tämän opinnäytetyön aiheena on materiaalivirtojen hallinta Narvi Oy:ssä. Tutkimus suoritettiin, koska yritys halusi korjata materiaalivirtojen pullonkauloja.

Kuljetinratkaisun suunnittelun toteutti kuljettimien toimittaja.
Teoriaosuudessa tutkittiin erilaisia layout-tyyppejä sekä simulointia.
The purpose of this thesis was to plan a layout for an extension space for Korpela ltd. The idea was to create digital 3D-models of meat processing machines, packing machines and the environment with SolidWorks program.
Environment was measured digitally from DWG form. The machinery was measured physically on the spot. With these measurement data, 3D models were created. These models then were brought to the environment and with this assembly, the best possible layout was created.
In planning, the most important questions answered were, inspection of material flow, the position of boxing and palletin and the space reservation for the production lines and future additions. The planning itself was conducted by meetings with the representatives of Korpela. The planning of conveyors was made by company which delivers them.
In theory section different kind of layout types were examined along with simulation.

▼ Chapter 1 examines the effects of state corporate income taxes on the location of foreign
direct investment, taking into account the state governments' behavior when setting taxes. Ignoring the tax setting behavior of states may bias the estimate of the tax effects on foreign
direct investment. I estimate the tax effects on investment location adapting a discrete choice model of differentiated products, which allows at the same time to control for the outside options of investors and to use instrumental variables to solve the problem of tax endogeneity. I find the tax elasticity to be consistently around -1. Chapter 2 addresses the important question of the extent to which personal and corporate income taxes are used to compensate for sales tax fluctuations within the U.S. states. State governments finance their expenditures with multiple tax instruments, so when collections from one source decline, they are typically compensated by greater revenues from other sources. The results show that one percent increase in the sales tax rate is associated with a half and a third percent decrease in the personal and corporate income tax rates respectively. In terms of tax revenues per capita, the results show that a one percent increase in the sales tax revenue per capita is associated with a 3 percent and a 0.9 percent decrease in the corporate and personal income tax revenue per capita respectively. Chapter 3 investigates the competitive behavior of the U.S.
copper industry. Before 1978, most of the U.S. domestic
copper production and an important fraction of the imports of refined
copper were traded at a price known as the U.S. producer price, which was set by the major U.S. producers. At the same time, the rest of the world was trading
copper at prices determined in auction markets. There are several explanations in the literature to account for the existence of market power in the U.S. industry. This essay tests if that market power was actually exercised or not and to what extent. The results show that
copper prices were close to the ones predicted by a competitive model of the industry.

▼ A key challenge facing the nuclear fusion community
is how to design a reactor that will operate in environmental
conditions not easily reproducible in the laboratory for materials
testing. Finite element analysis (FEA), commonly used to predict
components’ performance, typically uses idealised geometries. An
emerging technique shown to have improved accuracy is image based
finite element modelling (IBFEM). This involves converting a three
dimensional image (such as from X ray tomography) into an FEA mesh.
A main advantage of IBFEM is that models include micro structural
and non idealised manufacturing features. The aim of this work was
to investigate the thermal performance of a CFC Cu divertor
monoblock, a carbon fibre composite (CFC) tile joined through its
centre to a CuCrZr pipe with a Cu interlayer. As a plasma facing
component located where thermal flux in the reactor is at its
highest, one of its primary functions is to extract heat by active
cooling. Therefore, characterisation of its thermal performance is
vital.Investigation of the thermal performance of CFC Cu joining
methods by laser flash analysis and X ray tomography showed a
strong correlation between micro structures at the material
interface and a reduction in thermal conductivity. Therefore, this
problem leant itself well to be investigated further by IBFEM.
However, because these high resolution models require such large
numbers of elements, commercial FEA software could not be used.
This served as motivation to develop parallel software capable of
performing the necessary transient thermal simulations. The
resultant code was shown to scale well with increasing problem
sizes and a simulation with 137 million elements was successfully
completed using 4096 cores. In comparison with a low resolution
IBFEM and traditional FEA simulations it was demonstrated to
provide additional accuracy.IBFEM was used to simulate a divertor
monoblock mock up, where it was found that a region of delamination
existed on the CFC Cu interface. Predictions showed that if this
was aligned unfavourably it would increase thermal gradients across
the component thus reducing lifespan. As this was a feature
introduced in manufacturing it would not have been accounted for
without IBFEM.The technique developed in this work has broad
engineering applications. It could be used similarly to accurately
model components in conditions unfeasible to produce in the
laboratory, to assist in research and development of component
manufacturing or to verify commercial components against
manufacturers’ claims.
By harnessing the same process as that which powers
the sun, fusion power promises to deliver an effectively limitless
supply of energy without producing carbon emissions or long term
nuclear waste. To achieve this, plasma is produced that is ten
times hotter than the sun’s core and is held in place by
superconducting magnets. The edge of this plasma still reaches
temperatures of up to 3000 °C and the challenge for engineers and
materials scientists is to develop a vessel capable of…
