▼ It is widely accepted that there are significant nourishing social and physical health benefits from being outdoors in natural environments, such as parklands, beaches and forests. While a public outdoor swimming pool is traditionally identified as a sporting venue, I propose in this study that it can be considered as a body of water in a community parkland setting. This broader description focuses attention on how public outdoor swimming pools can contribute to the physical and social health of a community in diverse ways, as an outdoor public space. A finding from the field research, is that public outdoor pools are a common space for people of diverse social groups to interact and co-exist. Getting into the water or being around the pool, is the reason for being at the spaces of a pool rather than a waterless park, but the research showed that swimming in a horizontal position was, usually, not the reason for getting in the water. The main reason for being at the pool was social - to be amongst other people with friends, in or out of the water. However the focus shape of the pool for competition may inhibit inclusive social uses. This research was undertaken at four public outdoor pools in Launceston, Tasmania, in the summer school holidays of January 2010, on warm to hot afternoons. Out of 30 direct observations and 100 indirect observations, for an average of 33 minutes duration, just 21 seconds or 1% was spent swimming in a horizontal position — in chunks of 2 to 4 seconds. Chatting, watching and playing occupied 82% of the time at the pool and 71% was spent in the water or at the edges of the water. Another finding was that the swimming abilities of all people at the pools (excluding the competitive swimmers observed) when they did swim horizontally, was of a poor standard for adequate life preserving skills in a critical situation. Tasmania with a population of 500,000 people has 9 x 50 m swimming pools and at least 80 swimming pools where school lessons are taught and the public can use. Swimming skills noted in field research do not reflect the use of these venues for skill acquisition. Only 50% of 11 year old Tasmanian children achieve national swimming skill benchmarks. This study explores the potential for enhancing social capital in public spaces, in the context of one specific social grouping — adolescents. Youth tend to be marginalised and criminalised for their play in public spaces, a process of exclusion that can inhibit their citizenship behaviours and reduce social cohesion. This censure is evident at the public pools studied. One research question asked: "how would you make the pool more user friendly?" revealed that the play and social needs of youth were inadequately catered for. I conclude this is due to the shape of the pool - designed for competition, not enough deep water, restrictions on risky activity, not enough semiprivate spaces, and under staffing of pools by lifeguards/activity supervisors. ▼ This thesis explores the convergence of bodies, materialities and practices of the indoor swimming pool, focusing particularly on the habits and experiences of regular lane swimmers in the UK. Swimming is one of the UK's most popular sports in terms of participation, and yet relatively little work in academic geography has addressed the practice of lane swimming or sought to situate the swimming pool as a site through which the embodied experience of place may be explored. Seeking to redress this omission, the thesis is based on research focused ethnographically on pools in and around one city in the south of England, combining semi-structured interviews with regular lane swimmers, observations of swimming practices, and auto-ethnographic participation. Textually, the thesis advances a geographical tradition of place writing in which the author/geographer is bodily present in an environment and writes about it from a first-person perspective, extending such work from its more traditionally masculine subjectivities, and indeed largely terrestrial and outdoor realms, through a focus on the confined space of the pool and the repetitious, habitual, rhythmic act of swimming laps in a lane. Compositionally, the thesis is divided into two main sections. The first section sets up the main theoretical and empirical impulses of the study, positioning them in relation to literatures on place, body, and health, as well as on writing as a methodology for geographical research. A contextual history of swimming and the pool is also offered. The second section is structured as a series of five essays on the pool and itsswimming bodies. In the first, the pool is presented as a contained space; the second suggests swimming as a form of correspondence between body and water; the third examines the swimming costume and its relation to identity and ideas of intimacy and anonymity; the fourth focuses on ways in which the swimming body is re-created through habitual encounter with the pool, emphasising the fluidity of both body and place; and the fifth and final essay dwells on the potential for the repetition and rhythm of lap swimming to produce a sense of stability. A concluding chapter returns to the wider themes of how place, writing and the body interrelate in these cultural geographies of indoor lane swimming.

▼ Concerning the great importance of the safety of recreational waters, a cross-sectional study at Addis Ababa, Debre Zeit and Ambo was carried out over a three month period of time from May-July, 2008. A total of 72 water samples from two natural bathing lakes and six outdoor swimming pools (18 and 54 samples respectively) were collected and analyzed for total (TC), fecal coliforms (FC), fecal streptococci (FS), hetrotrophic bacteria (HPC), S. aureus , PH, Temperature, Free chlorine and Turbidity The results of swimming pools and natural recreational water bodies were checked respectively against well established standards of WHO,(2006) and BSI,(1991). The analyses demonstrated that, out of the 54 samples of six outdoor swimming pools, the compliance of the bathing water to the microbiological standards of WHO ranges from 52(96.3%) for S. aureus, 44 (81.5%) for TC, 43(79.6%) for HPC, and 38(70.4%) for FC and were found un acceptable. The amount of polluted TC/FC/FS/ S. aureus Ambo Ethiopia hotel was the highest followed by Ghion hotels with high TC/ S. aureus count, Air force officers club hotel is the least with low count in all except high HPC Additionally, the free chlorine residue level tested, all of the samples from the swimming pool were less than the required guide line value of 1mg/l, that is <1.0 mg l-1(100%) ., 75.9% of the pool samples passed the turbidity levels only 24.1% were in line with the WHO guide level. Higher PH (>7.8) 33.3% (alkaline) were observed from AFOCHSP where as in 33.3% of the samples had PH between 7.2-7.8.and the remaining samples had PH less than 7.2. The number of microbiologically unacceptable samples from natural bathing Lakes for FS was 4 (22.2%). The compliance level for FS from Lake Babogaya and Hora were 33.3% and 11.1% respectively. The compliance of the lake water for TC and FC was not as such high and generally good. x From these results it was shown that all of the outdoor swimming pools examined were contaminated and most of the bacteriological and physicochemical parameters measured were not in harmony with the reference values set out by WHO. This is mainly due to the current absence of, monitoring (supervision), proper disinfection and/or lack of control over related parameters to efficient disinfection processes. The study findings suggest that the observed problems will be minimized by promoting good hygiene education and practices for swimmers, encouraging proper pre-swim showering, applying a better and strict supervision, providing training and education for operators, monitoring the biological and chemical conditions(maintaining the proper conditions) of the pool at regular intervals. ▼ This thesis examines the architecture of modern waterside public swimming pools to ex-plore the nexus between architecture, nature and the body. Prominent architectural historians have largely overlooked the modern public pool, although it records a trajectory of major architectural themes of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Maturing as an architectural type during the 1920s and 1930s it has enjoyed four waves of development since this period, but it also highlights themes of leisure and nature, body and health, gender and class. Furthermore, the architecture of modern public pools located within or adjacent to existing bodies of water, such as the sea or river, is also revealing of how architecture relates to nature. The cultural artifice of the swimming pool that frames and controls a body of water positioned in relation to a natural body of water, brings to the fore a compelling spatial and cultural juxtaposition. In particular, this thesis argues that the architecture of modern waterside pools reveals dif-ferent imaginings of nature that manifest as three distinct design modes. This is demonstrated through an examination of seven case studies constructed between 1934-2004 from Europe and Australia. I describe these design modes as the Hydrophobic Pool: an architecture that contrasts its natural surrounds, the Hydrophilic Pool: an architecture that integrates with its natural surrounds, and the Hydromimetic Pool: an architecture that mimics its natural surrounds. Given the feeling of water against the skin stimulates senses unique to this architectural type, the thesis also employs and develops autoethnographic methods from the field of anthropology in order to explore how these conditions of architecture and nature are experienced. This has been tested using my own body as a public vehicle for research alongside spatial and visual forms of analyses commonly adopted with-in architectural histories. Framing a study of the modern waterside pool around these interrelations of architecture, nature and the body contributes to an alternate reading of this architectural type. In addition, the thesis raises broader questions regarding the formation of architectural history and critique and how might we better consider how architecture is inhabited and experienced.

▼ Previous studies have indicated that staphylococci have potential for use as indicators of water quality in swimming pool and other recreational waters. However, these organisms are not yet included in the official guidelines for recreational water quality promulgated by health authorities. The purpose of this study is to determine water quality of swimming pools and spas using staphylococci as microbiological indicators. On three occasions, between January and February 1988, water samples were collected from 14 public, indoor, chlorinated swimming pools and spas in Linn and Benton Counties. Any pool was considered unsanitary if Staphylococcus aureus was isolated and identified using the protocol outlined in the Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater in accordance with the Oregon State Health Division guidelines. The temperature, water clarity, pH, free chlorine, and total alkalinity likewise were measured for a more effective evaluation of the bacteriological results. Based on the above criteria, Staphylococcus aureus was isolated and identified in 33 percent of the swimming pools. The number of total coliforms isolated from these pools were not any higher than the other pools. Staphylococcus aureus was not recovered from water samples collected from the spas. Staphylococcal and coliform densities increased with decreasing concentration of free chlorine, but the densities of both organisms increased with increasing bathing load. However, no statistical significance was noted from the correlations (p > 0.05). The number of total staphylococci and total coliforms isolated from the surface microlayer using the Millipore membrane filter was higher than those obtained from the inlet and outlet sites. When these organisms were correlated, a significant result was observed for the surface microlayer (r = 0.5836, p = .01423), but not for the other two sampling sites (inlet and outlet). Thus, the use of the membrane filter is a more effective means of recovering these organisms. Results of this study suggest that swimming pools that appear to be well-maintained could harbor pathogenic organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus. Furthermore, in comparison to coliforms, Staphylococcus aureus was found to be a more sensitive indicator of recreational water quality. ▼ Unintentional injuries (accidents) are a global child health problem. Many child injury prevention measures are proven to be effective, yet government and community focus on prevention waxes and wanes through time and across locations. Within New Zealand some measures, such as child car seats, are mandated and enforced while the provision of other equally effective strategies, such as the enforcement of swimming pool fencing regulation, appears inconsistent. This research set out to discover what influences the government’s adoption of injury prevention policies and programmes. The research analysed interview and case study data using a Foucauldian understanding of everyday practice underpinned by the analysis of interview and case study data, while also applying critical and grounded theory and public policy research. Foucault’s concept of governmentality assisted in the exploration of government actions. The findings demonstrate support for improving child safety from government employees at various levels of responsibility across many agencies. Such support has been provided both with and without endorsement by political decision makers. Positivist, quantitative research is the foundation of injury prevention science, but at times can have perverse effects, especially if work to count and reduce injury events is construed as an effort to displace valued childhood experiences. Advocacy and lobbying for child injury prevention are acknowledged by those active in injury prevention as essential activities but are not well explored or researched within New Zealand. Collaboration has long been recommended as best practice for child injury prevention, because it enables wider distribution of messages and better use of resources. This research identified organisational cascades, where backbone organisations provided resources to other organisations, so they could also act as backbone organisations and support collaborative ventures. Collaboration can be counterproductive however, when child safety practitioners and advocates develop strongly coherent identities and reduce their communication with other groups. Such behaviour risks safety groups being unaware of emergent discourse that undermines injury prevention measures and sets them up to be negatively stereotyped and marginalised from decision making. This research highlights how success at preventing child injuries is contingent upon both positivist research and the presence of a widely accepted safety culture, where the use of safety equipment and safe practices are promoted by everyone as ‘the way we do things’. New Zealand’s child injury effort has been mostly effective, and injuries are reducing in number. Despite this, there is a risk that gains in child safety might be lost, should there be insufficient recognition of the factors that have been important for these improvements to have occurred. A procura de piscinas para a prática de atividades desportivas, recreativas e/ou terapêuticas tem sofrido um aumento gradual ao longo do tempo. No entanto, nas piscinas existem vários perigos associados à sua utilização. Relativamente aos perigos químicos, a utilização de desinfetantes à base de cloro, bromo ou compostos derivados vai, por um lado, inativar microrganismos patogénicos mas, por outro, dar origem a subprodutos ao reagir com compostos orgânicos presentes na água. Os trihalometanos são um exemplo de subprodutos que se podem formar e, entre os compostos principais, estão o clorofórmio (TCM), bromodiclorometano (BDCM), clorodibromometano (CDBM) e bromofórmio (TBM). Este trabalho teve como objetivo o desenvolvimento de uma metodologia analítica para a determinação de trihalometanos em água e ar de piscinas e a sua aplicação a um conjunto de amostras. Para a análise dos compostos, foi utilizada a microextração em fase sólida no espaço de cabeça (HS-SPME) com posterior quantificação dos compostos por cromatografia gasosa com detetor de captura eletrónica (GC-ECD). Foi realizada uma otimização das condições de extração dos compostos em estudo em amostras de água, através da realização de dois planeamentos experimentais. As condições ótimas são assim obtidas para uma temperatura de extração de 45ºC, um tempo de extração de 25 min e um tempo de dessorção de 5 min. Foram analisadas amostras de águas de piscina cedidas pelo Centro de Estudos de Águas, sendo avaliada a aplicação da técnica HS-SPME e o efeito de matriz. O modo como se manuseiam as soluções que contêm os compostos em estudo influencia os resultados devido ao facto destes serem bastante voláteis. Concluiu-se também que existe efeito de matriz, logo a concentração das amostras deverá ser determinada através do método de adição de padrão. A caraterização da água de piscinas interiores permitiu conhecer a concentração de trihalometanos (THMs). Foram obtidas concentrações de TCM entre 4,5 e 406,5 μg/L sendo que apenas 4 das 27 amostras analisadas ultrapassam o valor limite imposto pelo Decreto-Lei nº306/2007 (100 μg/L) no que diz respeito a águas de consumo humano e que é normalmente utilizado como valor indicativo para a qualidade das águas de piscina. Relativamente à concentração obtida no ar de uma piscina interior, foi detetada uma concentração média de 224 μg/m3 de TCM, valor muito abaixo dos 10000 μg/m3 impostos pelo Decreto-lei nº24/2012, como valor limite para exposição profissional a agentes químicos.

Foram coletadas amostras de água de piscinas térmicas e não térmicas na cidade de Porto Alegre, RS, Brasil entre os meses de maio de 2006 e março de 2007, com o objetivo de determinar a presença do gênero Acanthamoeba, bem como realizar a caracterização fenotípica e genotípica dos isolados. Amebas foram isoladas em cultivo monoxênico com Escherichia coli. A identificação dos isolados foi baseada na morfologia dos cistos e trofozoítos e na amplificação por PCR com oligonucleotídeos gênero-específico. O potencial patogênico foi avaliado usando testes de osmotolerância e termotolerância. Das 65 amostras analisadas, 13 (20%) foram positivas para amebas de vida livre e identificados morfologicamente como pertencentes ao gênero Acanthamoeba. Destas, 9 possuíam características compatíveis com o grupo morfológico II e 4 com o grupo III. Todos os isolados identificados morfologicamente quando submetidos à Reação de PCR, confirmaram pertencer ao gênero Acanthamoeba e 38% (5/13) dos isolados foram considerados potencialmente patogênicos a partir dos testes de osmotolerância e termotolerância. Neste estudo, o método molecular de RAPD ("Random Amplified Polymorphic-DNA") foi utilizado para investigar a relação genética entre os 13 isolados de piscinas e dois isolados de referência da ATCC. De 10 oligonucleotídeos decaméricos testados, quatro foram selecionados por gerarem produtos de amplificação passíveis de análise. A similaridade entre os isolados foi calculada utilizando-se o coeficiente de Jaccard e o dendrograma construído pelo método da média das distâncias entre grupos ("Average Linkage"). Quatro grupos distintos (G1-G4) de isolados foram formados de acordo com a similaridade genética entre eles. Sugeriu-se que os isolados do G1 por agruparem-se aos isolados de referência de A. castellanii (ATCC 30010 e 50492) possam pertencer a esta espécie. Os dados fenotípicos, tais como, morfologia e testes de tolerância foram relacionados aos dados genotípicos de RAPD e permitiram a caracterização dos isolados. Os resultados deste primeiro estudo de isolamento e caracterização de Acanthamoeba de água de piscinas na cidade de Porto Alegre-RS, Brasil confirmam a presença de isolados potencialmente patogênicos que podem representar um risco à saúde humana.

Water samples were collected from both heated and unheated swimming pools in the city of Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil between May 2006 and March 2007, to determine the presence of Acanthamoeba in the water of swimming pools as well as perform the phenotypic and genotypic characterization of the isolates. ▼ Natural swimming pools, (NSPs) are constructed bodies of water, with an impermeable liner between the soil and water, a designed, intentional hydraulic and skimmer system and a complex ecological community as a filter. This technology relies on biological filtration, the interaction of a balanced system including bog vegetation, bacteria and substrate, to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus levels in the NSPs water to less than 30 mg/l NO3 and 0.01 mg/l P. Water from three NSPs in central PA were sampled through a 5 month period and inputs and outputs estimated. Aboveground plant biomass of bog vegetation was harvested and analyzed for N and P concentrations. Results indicated the need for additional research conducted in a controlled setting to improve estimation of inputs and output compartments and allow measurement of the substrate compartment. None of the NSPs sampled could explain all nutrient removal through direct uptake and storage by biomass. Subsequently, research was conducted estimating phosphorus and nitrogen inputs, outputs and storage in two greenhouse studies. Outputs consisted of nutrients contained in harvested biomass while nutrient storage compartments were defined as plant biomass and substrate. Plant direct uptake proved insufficient to remove all nutrient inputs, and substrate type was significant in nutrient storage. In an experiment testing four substrates planted with Saururus cernuus and Iris versicolor, haydite/clay was the only substrate able to lower phosphorus levels of the mesocosm water to 0.01mg/l. All substrate treatments reduced mesocosm water NO3 to target levels of 30 mg/l. Iris produced significantly higher biomass than the lizards tail, and biomass was positively correlated with NO3 removal. A subsequent experiment testing the removal capabilities of treatments consisting of Canna x generalis and Iris versicolor planted in a substrate consisting of calcined clay and activated alumina, showed vegetated treatments removed more NO3 and P than the unvegetated control. Canna x generalis produced higher biomass and removed more NO3 and P than Iris versicolor. Again, biomass production and NO3 removal were highly correlated. The substrate of calcined clay/activated alumina proved very effective at removing P from the mesocosm water, PO4 levels were below 0.01 mg/l when measured using the Murphy-Riley method for both the Canna x generalis, Iris versicolor and unvegetated treatments. ▼ As piscinas, em geral, são estruturas de espaços recreativos e de lazer com múltiplas fontes de ruído. As atividades que ali se praticam são uma dessas fontes que contribuem para a existência de ruído, o qual é muitas vezes incrementado e constitui um elemento de agravamento, aumentando o risco associado a patologias diversas. Os Professores e treinadores que desenvolvem a sua atividade profissional nas piscinas cobertas estão invariavelmente expostos ao ruído oriundo das múltiplas fontes ali existentes, desde os sistemas de ventilação, à música, incluindo a comunicação verbal necessária nesses locais. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar e caracterizar o ruído nas piscinas cobertas em contexto de aula e, relacionar uma série de aspetos caracterizados pelos professores e treinadores com os valores de ruido, com o tempo de exposição ao ruído e com os anos de atividade dos professores e treinadores. Para as medições de ruído foi utilizado um sonómetro e para analisar a perceção dos professores e treinadores foi aplicado um questionário. O tratamento estatístico foi fundamentalmente a estatística descritiva e utilizou-se o programa SPSS. Para além disso, utilizou-se também o teste do Qui-quadrado 2x2 e considerado o nível de significância igual a 5% (p=0,05). Os resultados mostraram que os níveis médios de pressão sonora nas piscinas cobertas são muito elevados, situam-se entre os 83 dB(A) e os 89 dB(A). Os dados obtidos dos questionários mostram que a maioria dos professores e treinadores não é sensível ao ruído (52,5%), não valorizando a exposição ao ruido a que estão sujeitos. Os resultados permitiram também verificar que existe uma relação entre perda auditiva reportada e os anos de atividade verificando-se uma relação estatisticamente significativa (p=0,01). Conclui-se que as piscinas apresentam níveis de pressão sonora muito elevados, que são estruturas que não possuem as melhores condições acústicas, que os professores e treinadores estão expostos a níveis de pressão sonora que podem ser prejudiciais à sua saúde, por fim, que a exposição prolongada ao ruído parece, como seria de esperar, vir a ter um efeito no desenvolvimento de perdas auditivas por parte dos professores e treinadores. La formation des sous-produits de chloration dans les piscines couvertes dépend de nombreux paramètres cinétiques et hydrauliques. Cette étude propose le développement d’un modèle de prédiction de la formation de certains sous-produits de chloration et de leur transfert dans l’air. La construction du modèle est basée sur le couplage de constantes cinétiques déterminées à l’échelle laboratoire avec des modèles hydrauliques caractérisant les écoulements dans le bassin. Afin de calibrer et de valider les modèles, un bassin expérimental à l’échelle 1/10ème a été mis en place. Par ailleurs, une méthode de mesure des concentrations des sous-produits de chloration dans l’eau et dans l’air par Membrane Inlet Mass Spectrometry a été évaluée. La représentativité et la reproductivité des expériences réalisées sur le bassin ont été étudiées. À l’échelle laboratoire, les constantes cinétiques de consommation du chlore, de formation du chloroforme et de formation du dichloroacétonitrile par chloration du Body Fluid Analogue utilisé pour mimer les apports organiques des baigneurs ont été déterminées. Le comportement hydraulique du bassin a été modélisé par une série de réacteurs idéaux. Cette modélisation a été validée par la réalisation d’expériences de traçage sur le bassin expérimental. Enfin, les constantes de transfert eau-air des sous-produits de chloration volatils ont été déterminées et comparées avec plusieurs modèles de la littérature. Les résultats obtenus montrent que les modèles permettent de prévoir de façon satisfaisante l’évolution des paramètres modélisés. Le bassin expérimental constitue également un outil prometteur pour la calibration de modèles et l’évaluation de solutions de traitement.

The formation of chlorination by-products in swimming pools depends on many kinetic and hydraulic parameters. This study presents the development of a predictive model for the formation of chlorination by-products as well as their water-to-air transfer. The model is based on the coupling of kinetic rates determined in batch with hydraulic models which describe the flows in the basin. A pilot pool unit has been built in order to collect experimental data for the calibration and validation of the models. Moreover an analytical method by Membrane Inlet Mass Spectrometry has been assessed. The representativeness and the reproducibility of experiments performed on the pilot pool unit have been described. Kinetic rates for chlorine consumption, chloroform formation and dichloroacetonitrile formation have been studied at lab scale, based on chlorination experiments of a Body Fluid Analogue, a mix of chemicals which reproduces human intakes in swimming pools. The hydraulic behavior of the basin has been modeled by a series of ideal reactors. The model has been validated by comparison with tracer-based experiments. Finally, water-to-air transfer rates have been determined and compared with models from the literature. The modeled parameters were satisfactorily modeled. O objetivo deste trabalho é investigar o desempenho energético de dois diferentes tipos de sistemas de aquecimento de piscinas: á gás natural e por bomba de calor elétrica. Foi realizada instrumentação em duas piscinas localizadas em uma mesma academia, cada uma delas dotada de um dos tipos de sistema de aquecimento. Além destas duas piscinas, que são objeto de investigação desta pesquisa, outras quatro piscinas, localizadas cada uma em um local distinto na cidade de São Paulo, também receberam instrumentação e a coleta de dados está sendo executada através de sistemas de aquisição de dados, para posterior análise e novos trabalhos de pesquisa. Como resultados da análise das duas piscinas, obteve-se um coeficiente de desempenho - COP, médio para o sistema de aquecimento por bomba de calor igual a 4. Para o sistema a gás natural, os resultados para a eficiência global do sistema indicaram 76%, ao passo que o rendimento apenas dos aquecedores foi de 82%. As análises dos dados permitiram comprovar a influência da temperatura ambiente sobre o COP da bomba de calor. Quanto menor a temperatura do ar, menor o COP. A Temperatura do ar também mostrou forte influência sobre o consumo de energia.

The aim of this research is to investigate the energetic performance of two distinct kinds of swimming pool heating systems: gas-fired and electric heat pump. A practical instrumentation research was prepared in these two indoor swimming pools, placed in the same location. Besides these, other four swimming pool, placed each in a different ambient in the city of São Paulo also received the instrumentation so that it will be possible to run future researches, once the data is already being collected by the data loggers installed. As a result of the data analysis, it was found that the average coefficient of performance of the heat pumps studied is 4. For the natural gas fired system, the global efficiency factor was found to be 76%. The efficiency of the heaters isolated was found to be 82%. This research showed that the COP of heat pump systems has strong correlation with the air temperature. The lower the air temperature, the lower the COP. Temperature also has strong influence on the consumption of energy.

Com o intuito de avaliar as condições ecoepidemiológicas e sanitárias de piscinas coletivas da cidade de São Carlos SP, foram coletadas 160 amostras de água em 20 piscinas, entre Agosto/2007 e Abril/2008. As piscinas foram caracterizadas através de aplicação de questionário junto aos responsáveis pelo tratamento da água. Os parâmetros físico-químicos analisados foram: pH, temperatura, alcalinidade, concentração de cloro livre e turbidez. A análise microbiológica foi realizada através de contagem de bactérias heterotróficas (método de pour plate) e de concentração em membrana filtrante para a pesquisa de coliformes totais, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus spp, Pseudomonas spp, Mycobacterium spp e amebas de vida livre. Entre as piscinas analisadas, 11 eram aquecidas e nove não-aquecidas. Metade das piscinas localizava-se em ambiente interno e a outra metade em ambiente externo. Dezessete piscinas eram cloradas e três delas faziam tratamento de desinfecção combinado: duas utilizando cloro e UV e uma utilizando cloro e ozônio. Apenas 13 amostras (8 %) se apresentaram dentro dos padrões desejados para pH, turbidez e concentração de cloro livre ao mesmo tempo. Doze amostras (7,5 %) estavam fora do padrão sugerido para bactérias heterotróficas e 63 (39 %) foram consideradas insatisfatórias quanto à presença de coliformes totais. Escherichia coli foi detectada em duas amostras apenas. Em relação aos outros microrganismos pesquisados, 102 amostras (64 %) apresentaram-se com pelo menos um deles. As porcentagens de ocorrência foram: 14 % para Staphylococcus spp, 35 % para Pseudomonas spp, 33 % para Mycobacterium spp e 21 % para amebas de vida livre. As amebas detectadas foram utilizadas para recuperar bactérias possivelmente presentes em seu interior. Das 33 amostras positivas para esses protozoários, 18 (54 %) demonstraram hospedar Mycobacterium spp, 15 (45 %) abrigavam Pseudomonas spp e uma (3 %) apresentava Staphylococcus spp internalizados. Escherichia coli não foi recuperada a partir de células amebianas. Os parâmetros físico-químicos mais relacionados com a ocorrência de microrganismos nas amostras estudadas foram o pH e o cloro. Não foi identificada relação significativa entre a temperatura da água e a ocorrência de microrganismos. De forma geral, foi possível observar certo descuido quanto às formas adequadas de tratamento e manutenção das águas das piscinas estudadas, o que pode colocar em risco a saúde dos freqüentadores, ao criar condições para o desenvolvimento de microrganismos, inclusive para aqueles potencialmente patogênicos.

Desde o início da época Moderna, a problemática do lugar começou a levantar questões, e a ser foco de análise para teóricos e arquitetos, desenvolvendo uma atitude de respeito, interpretação e acima de tudo inspiração nos lugares. Esta dissertação centra-se na questão do lugar; vão ser estudados a importância e significados do lugar e como o programa piscina surge nesta problemática o que leva a falar sobre a água; e é sobre estas bases teóricas que os objetos em análise são sustentados. Assim, existem questões a serem respondidas: a) como o espírito do lugar se relaciona com a Arquitetura? b) como a presença da água proporciona lugares? c) como as especificidades de um lugar são filtradas através de um determinado programa, na obra de um determinado autor? De modo a responder a estas questões, o trabalho divide-se em três capítulos: no primeiro, um enquadramento teórico sobre a problemática, referindo alguns autores e respetivas teorias alusivas ao lugar, a sua identidade e carácter, a elaboração de uma grelha concetual para uma melhor perceção de vários conceitos, os quais quero verificar e perceber nos objetos de estudo; o segundo capítulo apresenta uma genealogia da piscina, de modo a encontrar um sentido de necessidade humana, perceber o que aconteceu, em determinados momentos e circunstâncias, que veio permitir e incentivar a criação e, por sua vez, a origem das demais peças aquáticas que funcionam como primórdios à piscina; o terceiro, e último capítulo, é reservado à análise de dois objetos de estudo com o mesmo programa, dentro da problemática identificada sobre o lugar – a Piscina das Marés, em Leça da Palmeira, e a Piscina da Quinta de Santo Ovídio, em Aveleda.

Since the beginning of Modernity, the problem of place began rising questions and being the focus of analyses on many theoreticians and architects, combining an attitude of respect, interpretation and inspiration on the places. This thesis focus on the question of place, it will be studied the importance and significance of it, and how the pool, and swimming pool program appears in this problematic, wich leads to talk about water; and it is on these theoretical bases that the objects under analysis are sustained. So, there are questions to be answered: a) how does the spirit of the place is related to Architecture? b) how does the presence of water provide places? c) how the specificities of a place are filtered through a certain program, in the work of a certain author?
