▼ The recent change in US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) surface ozone regulation, lowering surface ozone daily maximum 8-hour average (MDA8) exceedance threshold from 75 ppbv to 70 ppbv, poses significant challenges to US air quality (AQ) forecasters responsible for ozone MDA8 forecasts. The forecasters, supplied by only a few AQ model products, end up relying heavily on self-developed tools. To help US AQ forecasters, this study explores surface ozone MDA8 forecasting tool based solely on statistical methods and standard meteorological variables from the numerical weather prediction (NWP) models. The model combines self-organizing map (SOM), a clustering technique, with a stepwise weighted quadratic regression using meteorological variables as predictors for ozone MDA8. The SOM method identifies different weather regimes, to distinguish between various modes of ozone variability, and groups them according to similarity. In this way, when a regression is developed for a specific regime, data from the other regimes are also used, with weights based on their similarity to this specific regime. This approach, regression in SOM (REGiS), yields a distinct model for each regime taking into account both the training cases for that regime and other similar training cases. To produce probabilistic MDA8 ozone forecasts, REGiS weighs and combines all of the developed regression models based on the weather patterns predicted by a NWP model. REGiS is evaluated over San Joaquin Valley in California and northeastern plains of Colorado. The results suggest that the model performs best when trained and adjusted separately for an individual AQ station and its corresponding meteorological site. Real-time ozone forecasting using REGiS is demonstrated for the Philadelphia area over a brief period of time in 2016. Advisors/Committee Members: Anne M. ▼ Multiple investigations have found a negative impact of aerosol pollution on human health by studying the association of human health endpoints and PM2.5 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter smaller than 2.5 μm) concentrations. Satellite-derived PM2.5 estimates are relevant to improve the spatial resolution of air pollution concentration estimates due to the sparse number of PM2.5 monitoring stations. PM2.5 concentrations have been successfully estimated from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instruments onboard Terra and Aqua satellites using retrievals of aerosol optical depth (AOD) in the dark, vegetated eastern U.S. However, the semi-arid western U.S. continues to be an unproven and infrequently explored area for remotely sensed aerosol pollution retrievals, both for evaluating the ability of satellites to quantify AOD and to estimate surface PM2.5 concentrations from columnar AOD. The goal of this dissertation is “investigating the use of satellite remote sensing products to quantify surface levels of aerosol pollution in the semi-arid western U.S.”. In this work, we evaluated different NASA aerosol products against ground-based sunphotometry data, investigated the physical processes governing the relationship between columnar AOD and surface PM2.5 mass concentrations, and applied data assimilation techniques using NASA satellite retrievals of AOD and ground-based PM2.5 concentrations to improve estimates of near surface PM2.5 mass concentrations in the semi-arid western U.S. To achieve these goals, data from multiple aerosol monitoring stations, satellite retrievals, weather balloon soundings, weather stations, emission inventory data, and model meteorological variables were used. The spatially resolved (12km x 12km horizontal resolution), daily PM2.5 estimates will be useful in future research associated with modeling smoke concentrations in urban areas, and to investigate the human health impacts associated with PM2.5 exposures (e.g., from wildfire smoke) in epidemiological studies. ▼ The green building and sustainability revolution from the early 21st century provided a significant improvement in building performance and reduced their carbon footprint. When building and operational costs are compared, personnel cost accounts for 85% of the operational cost of any organisation. Major green building guidelines across the world discuss human comfort and health aspects but don't focus on human productivity in the office or other building typology. This gap presented an excellent opportunity to develop a model that establishes the relationship between indoor environmental quality and occupant productivity in office buildings. The study was conducted in Doha, Qatar using experiment and survey using 90 sensors in 15 zones in an office building for a period of nine month. Occupant productivity was captured using online survey with nine questions. Occupant response was analysed against various indoor environmental quality parameters using Response Surface Methodology to outline various relationships. Research study achieved its aim and objectives and produced eight innovative equations that represent the relationship between various indoor environmental factors and occupant productivity. Results also indicate that outside temperature and humidity have an indirect impact on occupant productivity; while temperature, relative humidity and light levels have the most significant impact on productivity. Lux levels have an indirect effect on an occupant's perception of temperature, and outdoor relative humidity has an indirect effect on thermal comfort. Indoor environmental quality factors have direct impact on occupant productivity. This study's unique focus and research design can be used to extend occupant productivity studies in different types of buildings in different climatic regions. It has provided a substantial contribution to the knowledge gap that existed between indoor environmental quality and occupant productivity. Future researchers can use this study to investigate occupant productivity and indoor environment further.

L’impact sanitaire lié à la pollution de l’air nécessite une estimation précise de celle-ci. Les réseaux de stations de mesures des agences de surveillance de la qualité de l’air (AIRPARIF en Île-de-France) ne sont pas suffisamment denses pour renseigner sur l’hétérogénéité de la pollution en ville. Et, les modèles haute résolution simulant les champs de concentration de polluants en 3D ont une large couverture spatiale mais sont limités par leurs incertitudes. Ces deux sources d’information exploitées indépendamment ne permettent pas d’évaluer finement l’exposition d’un individu. Nous proposons deux approches pour résoudre ce problème : (1) par la mesure directe des polluants avec des capteurs mobiles à bas coût et des instruments de référence. Des niveaux de pollution très variables ont été constatés entre les microenvironnements et dans une même pièce. Ces capteurs devraient être déployés en grand nombre pour palier à leurs contraintes techniques. Les instruments de référence, très coûteux et volumineux, ne peuvent être utilisés que ponctuellement. (2) en combinant les concentrations simulées par le modèle Parallel Micro-SWIFT-SPRAY (PMSS) à Paris avec une résolution horizontale de 3 mètres et les mesures des stations de surface AIRPARIF. Nous avons déterminé des « zones de représentativité » - zones géographiques où les concentrations sont très proches de celle de la station - uniquement à partir des sorties du modèle PMSS. Ensuite, nous avons développé un modèle bayésien pour propager la mesure des stations dans ces zones.

The harmful effects of air pollution need a high-resolution concentration estimate. Ambient pollutant concentrations are routinely measured by surface monitoring sites of local agencies (AIRPARIF in Paris area, France). Such networks are not dense enough to represent the strong horizontal gradients of pollutant concentrations over urban areas. And, high-resolution models that simulate 3D pollutant concentration fields have a large spatial coverage but suffer from uncertainties. Those both information sources exploited independently are not able to accurately assess an individual’s exposure. We suggest two approaches to solve this problem : (1) direct pollution measurement by using low cost mobile sensors and reference instruments. A high variability across pollution levels is shown between microenvironments and also in the same room. Mobile sensors should be deployed on a large scale due to their technical constraints. Reference instruments are very expensive, cumbersome, and can only be used occasionally. (2) by combining concentration fields of the Parallel Micro-SWIFT-SPRAY (PMSS) model over Paris at a horizontal resolution of 3 meters with AIRPARIF local ground stations measurements. We determined “representativeness areas” - perimeter where concentrations are very close to the one of the station location – only from PMSS simulations. Next, we developed a Bayesian model to extend the stations measurements within these areas.

▼ Air pollution in the form of particles has considerable influence on human health and climate. Atmospheric aerosol particles arise from direct emissions of particles and from the conversion of certain gases to particles in the atmosphere. They are produced by a number of different sources and have a typical lifetime of about a week in the atmosphere. The chemical composition of the atmospheric aerosol is highly variable in time and space, and the different effects of the aerosol can usually not be understood without taking its multi-component nature into account. The overall aim of this thesis is to contribute to an improved understanding of climate effects and air quality issues related to aerosol particles. The thesis focuses on aerosol particles containing alkali-compounds, and particles produced by biomass combustion are of particular interest. Aerosol mass spectrometer techniques for highly sensitive and selective detection of alkali-containing particles have been further developed and applied in laboratory experiments, in fluidised bed combustion, and in ambient air measurements. The experimental techniques provide the chemical composition of individual aerosol particles with high time resolution and they are well suited for combustion aerosol applications, and for detection of sea salt particles that contain a large fraction of sodium compounds. Laboratory experiments were performed to study the emission of potassium and sodium-containing compounds during rapid pyrolysis of birchwood. The alkali emission during the pyrolysis phase and from ash and char formed at high temperatures was characterized. Studies were also carried out during biomass combustion in a 12 MW (thermal) circulating fluidized-bed boiler. The effect of the addition of chlorine and/or sulphur to the fuel on fly ash composition, deposit formation, and superheater corrosion was investigated. Addition of sulphur and chlorine increased the formation of submicron particles and lead to enhanced deposition of potassium sulphate and chloride. The results compared well with results from earlier laboratory-scale experiments concerning the effects of chlorine and sulphur on potassium chemistry. The findings are of importance for actions aimed at minimizing alkali related corrosion and deposition problems during large-scale biomass conversion. The seasonal variation of the elemental composition of particulate matter in Skopje was studied by chemical analysis of samples collected with impactor technique. Major aerosol components were identified including mineral dust, oil combustion, traffic-related aerosol and secondary sulphate, while a separate biomass burning component could not be identified with the employed methods. Aerosol mass spectrometry was used to study the influence of atmospheric transport patterns and meteorology on alkali concentrations in Gothenburg. ▼ Changes in chemistry, particularly pH, of a number of soft-water moorland pools in The Netherlands are described. Several groups of organisms, including diatoms, and direct measurements are used to infer past pH values. Diatoms were studied from preserved samples from the beginning of the 20th century, from recent samples and from sediment cores. Old data about chemistry, macrophytes and human impact were obtained from published and unpublished documents. In isolated pools in nature reserves the pH declined to c. 4 from initial values between 4 and 6 at the beginning of this century. Small inputs of nutrients by agriculture, fisheries or swimming retards acidification. The diversity and dissimilarity of diatom assemblages decrease by acidification, particularly in clear water pools. Acidification boosts the growth of the diatom Eunotiaexigua . Sulphate concentrations were extremely high in 1977 and 1978 in two clear water pools where more than half of the bottom surface was exposed to the atmosphere during the extremely dry summer of 1976 and decreased afterwards, parallel to Juncusbulbosus . E.exigua decreased with a delay. Apparently reduced sulphur compounds, which accumulated in the bottom due to atmospheric deposition in the decades before, were oxidized in the dry summer of 1976. No such changes were seen after the dry summer of 1921. In these two pools the pH declined from 5-6 in 1920 to c. 4 in c. 1980. In a brown water pool, where only a small fraction of the bottom was exposed in 1976, changes by the drought were small. Also the decline of pH in this pool since 1920 (c. 0.5 unit) was relatively small. Palaeolimnological studies were conducted in three pools, which were supposed to be pristine. However, it appeared both from coring results and documented evidence that these pools had pH values between 4 and 5 in the early 19th century and became subsequently more alkaline by nutrient enrichment. After 1900 the pools were acidified because anthropogenic enrichment was finished and acid atmospheric deposition increased. To follow the effect of future changes of acid atmospheric deposition and understand the processes involved, chemical and biological monitoring should continue. Input of buffering substances in some moorland pools could maintain weakly acid conditions in Dutch surface waters. Advisors/Committee Members: C. den Hartog, N. van Breemen.

Subjects/Keywords: Území se nachází v brněnské čtvrti Pisárky. Na širší území jsem v prvním semestru zpracovala studii; která je částečně součástí výkresové dokumentace. Urbanistickým konceptem bylo vytvořit propojení příjemným způsobem s městem na východ od zadaného pozemku. Městské lázně jsem pojala jako opravdové lázně s lázeňskými procedurami – rašelinovými (slatinnými) koupelemi a zábaly; dále vodoléčbou; ale zároveň i jako místo pro rekreaci a relax. Tvar objektu hmotově naznačuje zkosené písmeno U; kde vnitřní prostor je veřejně přístupný. Recepcí je možné vejít do areálu lázní; nebo projít do veřejného prostoru náměstí s jednotlivými obchody v přízemí na jedné straně budovy a na druhé s prosklenou fasádou areálu lázní. Náměstí je klidné a nabízí možný průchod skrz celé území Starého Brna příjemným prostředím. Budova je dispozičně rozdělena na dvě části. Jedna je pronajímatelná pro obchody a služby. Tato funkce sahá přes dvě patra. Ve třetím patře jsou pronajímatelné plochy lékařských ordinací; rehabilitace a zázemí pro cvičení skupin; služby s funkcí zdraví a péče o tělo a mysl. Druhá část objektu je tvořena areálem lázní. Jediným vchodem z recepce; která obě části rozděluje; jsou vstupy do šaten; které tvoří filtr; jak pro kontrolu; tak i pro čistotu. Z šaten se dostaneme do otevřeného půdorysu s jednotlivými funkcemi (vodoléčba; slatinné koupele; sauna; pára a další); který sahá do stejné výšky jako dvě patra obchodů. Jsou zde totiž umístěny solné zdi a lehátka; která dohromady se solnými zdmi vytváří příjemná zákoutí k odpočinku. Prostor tak tvoří obří „solnou jeskyni“ pro kvalitní a příjemný vzduch. Ve druhém; technicky třetím podlaží areálu lázní najdeme whirlpooly; bazény; jak vnitřní; tak i venkovní bazén s terasou; masérny; pronajímatelnou saunu a páru; whirlpooly specifických funkcí; opět odpočívárny tvořené zákoutími lehátek a příčkami ze soli. V tomto podlaží je možné také vnitřní bazén se zázemím šaten plně uzavřít k soukromým akcím. Ve dvou podzemních podlažích se nachází parkování o celkové kapacitě 172 stání. Hlavní povrch tvoří černý a krémově bílý mramor. Na vnějších zdech je mramor leštěný; na vnitřních zdech v areálu lázní je matný. Tento luxusní materiál je doplněn krémovou keramickou velkoformátovou dlažbou v interiéru; velikými prosklenými plochami a příčkami z lámané soli; které dotváří specifickou atmosféru. Technologické rozvody pod stropy jsou zakryty sádrokartonovými podhledy s výjimkou parkovacích podlaží; kde jsou instalace vedeny volně pod stropem. Nosná obvodová stěna je navržena z vápenopískových bloků; systém jinak monolitický železobetonový skelet. Stejně tak vnitřní příčky jsou tvořeny vápenopískovými bloky s mramorovým obkladem. Okenní otvory jsou osazeny do hliníkových rámu Schueco v tmavé antracitové barvě. Hlavní schodiště v lázních je železobetonové.; Territory is located in the District of Pisárky. In the third floor are leaseable areas of medical practice; rehabilitation and support services for exercise groups; with the health and care of the body and mind. The second part of the object is made up of Club Spa. The only entrance on reception; which separates the two parts are inputs into changing rooms that make up the filter; both the control and purity. From changing rooms is an open floor plan with the individual features (hydrotherapy; peat bath; sauna; steam room and more); which goes back to the same height as the two floors of shops. There are indeed placed salt walls and sunbeds; which together with the salt walls creates a pleasant place to relax. Space is a giant "salty cave" for high quality and pleasant air. In the second; third floor; the baths of sophisticated features whirlpooly; swimming pools; both indoor and outdoor pool with terrace; masseurs; leaseable sauna and steam; whirlpooly-specific features; again rest rooms consisting of frills bunks and bars of salt. In this deck is also an indoor pool with changing rooms fully close the private actions. In two ground floors; parking on the total capacity of 172. The main surface is black and cream-white marble. On the external walls; marble polished; internal walls in a matte. This luxury material is accompanied by a large format perfect ceramics tile in the Interior; large glass surfaces and the bars of the smattering salt which musicians. Technological divorce under the ceilings are covered with pasterboard ceilings except parking deck; where installation is kept loose under the ceiling. A perimeter wall is designed from gange-sand blocks; otherwise a monolithic system consist of skeleton. As well as internal splitter are gange-sand blocks with marble coating. The window openings are fitted with aluminium frame Schueco in a dark metallic colour. The main staircase at the steel cocrete.
