▼ I estimate a dynamic game where firms make external
financing decisions and hold cash taking into account the
corresponding behavior of their peers. A key advantage of this
approach is that I can obtain an empirical measure of peer effects
that stem from decision makers' dynamic optimization problem. Using
the product market to identify peer groups, I quantify the costs
associated with deviating from average industry policies. Firms'
cash holdings reveal a significant negative value attached to
falling below the peer group median cash-to-capital ratio. Firms
with more complex information environments and firms that rely less
on R&D in their business model put relatively larger emphasis
on peer firms in their decision making.

▼ Hierarchical or asymmetrical power relationships among states have long been a focus of scholarly attention (e.g., asymmetrical alliances, trade dependencies). While the "power to hurt" is one expression of power, an alternative approach is to gain and exercise authority, or "rightful rule." One of the major impediments to the study of social concepts such as authority or legitimacy, however, is in their informal or intangible nature. This dissertation uses game theoretic and latent variable approaches to capture informal, social authority relationships, or social hierarchies, among international states and explores the effects of these hierarchies on security and economic behavior.
I posit that states adopt one of two social roles – that of a dominant or a subordinate. Each subordinate chooses a degree of autonomy that it is willing to cede to the dominant in exchange for a corresponding degree of protection. Ranging from complete autonomy to complete control, these dyadic bargains make up a social international hierarchy. This hierarchy affects the relationships between each subordinate and the dominant, as well as the relationships among subordinates.
In the security realm, the probability of conflict initiation is inversely related to the degree of subordination. When conflict does occur, dominants are more likely to intervene when the target is located at a higher position in the dominant's social hierarchy than the aggressor state. Economically, the probability that a state enacts illiberal policies is inversely related to its degree of subordination. Moreover, more subordinated states face a lower risk of economic sanction than states located lower in the hierarchy, even for similar illiberal actions. Empirical analysis of states within the US hierarchy (1950-2000) and UK hierarchy (1870-1913) using
strategic probit models supports these theoretical predictions.

Interaction dynamics of strategic planning within m-form based firms.

▼ A crucial limitation of research on strategic planning is that it has always viewed
strategic planning as a single process in a corporation. In practice, strategic
planning in complex multi-business corporations has evolved into a network of
multi-level and multi-unit strategic planning processes. This makes it challenging
for managers and strategists to undertake the activities needed to run those strategic
planning systems effectively. The interactions between strategy practitioners as
they enact those planning processes play a crucial role in determining effectiveness
of the planning process as a whole.
Therefore, this thesis is based on a conceptual framework that represents strategic
planning as a network of collaboration amongst quasi-independent processes taking
place across multiple levels and units. This thesis adopts an embedded design
within two in-depth case studies and one pilot case study to examine the
strategising activities, practices and interaction dynamics of strategic planning
within the M-form based firms. The result articulates the dynamics of strategy
practitioners’ interactions in a series of four generic interaction patterns: (1) the
Bilateral Scheme, (2) the Cohesive Facilitation Scheme, (3) the Ambassadorial
Coordination Scheme, and (4) the Supervisory Driven Scheme. The result also sheds
light on the extended roles of strategic planning within a multi-level and multi-unit
environment, and on how different actors contribute to the vertical and horizontal
aspects of strategic planning.
The findings of this research have implications for both theory and practice. This
thesis mainly contributes to strategy as practice perspective, strategic planning
literature, organisational theory, situated learning literature, sensemaking
perspective on practice, power theory, and agency theory. Theoretically, this study
introduces a new method for examining the practice of strategic planning based on
studying strategic planning links between practitioners representing horizontally as
well as vertically differentiated units. In doing so, I have represented strategic
planning as a multi-unit as well as a multi-level process, and hence have been able
to show how it operates as a network of collaborative relationships and activities.
This extends the view of strategic planning prevailing in the literature, which
portrays a largely hierarchical, vertically-based structure.
Practically, the results provide managers and practitioners with an illustration of
how different practitioner roles and managerial levels contribute in distinctive ways
to strategic planning from both horizontal and vertical perspectives. It is apparent
from my investigation of the case study firms that their planning and decentralised
decision-making mechanisms are linked together heterarchically as well as
hierarchically.

▼ The goal of many self-help books on interpersonal relationships is for the reader to learn how to "just act natural." There are certain processes that interfere with one's ability to follow such advice, namely, the imposition of calculation of what is `natural' will not generate a reality where the "just natural" interaction that is occurring is believed. This thesis examines several implications of this as it relates to the social organization of experience and the limitations of self-help books in aiding in the learning production of that experience of expression games in informal interaction. These implications and limitations are examined through (1) an analysis of how the learning of expression games occurs through informal socialization. This is followed by (2) a brief content analysis of a sample of 50 self-help books on interpersonal relationships that purport to teach informal interaction. This informs (3) a systematic pilot study of a selected subsample that presents the limitations inherent in the authors' advice as formalized by the advice's characteristic content and rule-like quality; which is followed by an analysis of the reactions of readers to the subsample. The thesis concludes with suggestions for future research and considerations for scholars and policymakers in terms of how `expression games' are an integral feature in the generation of solidarity among social interactants and its relation to societal social order.

▼ This dissertation considers questions in the econometrics of discrete games of complete information. Chapter 1 proposes an econometric framework that explicitly models the selection of equilibria as a discrete choice model. Such framework could achieve point identification. A simulation based approach is proposed to estimate the structural model. Chapter 2 discusses the relationship among the three types of partial identification approaches available in the literature. I show a modified version of bound estimation is equivalent to the sensitive analysis approach and the sharp identification approach in the sense that they draw inference on the same identified set. Chapter 3 studies identification and estimation of discrete games in large networks. Moment inequalities on choice probabilities of subnetworks are constructed to partially identify the model. Monte Carlo studies are conducted in Chapter 1 and 3 to evaluate the performance of approaches developed in this dissertation. Two applications are considered, Chapter 1 contains a study on the entry competition in the home improvement industry; Chapter 3 studies peer effects on smoking in friend networks.

▼ Effective communication between physicians and patients in bad news conversation is
essential, especially when it concerns decisions about treatment and quality of life issues. In this
thesis, the central theme is how the semantics and pragmatics of personal pronouns, in
particular ‘I’, ‘you’ and ‘we’, contribute to the inclusiveness of exclusiveness of the patient in the
treatment discussion and, therefore, influence the discussion of the oncological treatment
process. By means of evaluating the pronouns used by the physicians in eleven bad news
conversations, the
strategic function of this word class is revealed. These pronouns could,
specifically, be interpreted as ‘actual pronouns’, as ‘generic pronouns’ (‘enlarged inclusiveness’,
‘rhetorical’ and ‘specific’) or as ‘other’ (dysfluencies, fillers and ‘no code’). The concept of
strategic maneuvering that is used here, serves to evaluate the argumentative moves the
physician makes to effectively and dialectically present the ‘best’ treatment option, determined
by the activity type of medical consultations. In this thesis, the focus lies on examining the
‘rhetorical we’ and ‘specific we’, and the pronouns ‘you’ and ‘I’ in the analysis. The findings
suggest that physicians use implicit propositions to seemingly follow the principles of
shared decision making, but in fact oftentimes do not.

Assim, o presente estudo objetivou analisar as

▼ The essays in this dissertation address the central question of whether involving family members in the child welfare decision-making process leads to higher family member engagement—in promoting safety, permanency, and well-being—and better outcomes for children and families. Specifically, these essays look at family group decision making, a child welfare practice in which family and other group members actively participate in developing the case plan that typically follows a report of maltreatment, and its impact on child and family outcomes. In the first essay, I study the impact of family group decision making on the recurrence of child maltreatment using a latent-variable framework. I assume the unobservables in the outcome and selection equations observe a normal factor structure, and I calculate various mean treatment parameters from a common set of structural parameters. In general, I find the effect is positive for both families that select into family group decision making and the entire population, where population is defined as the group of families involved in the child protection process. Also, the results indicate families most likely to participate in family group decision making benefit the most from the program. In the second essay, I study the level of family participation in addressing the outcomes, goals, and tasks listed in the child protection case plan. To address this topic, I exploit a unique family-level data set consisting of over 5,500 families in the United States. For each family member in each of these families, I observe a discrete measure of whether they completed their assigned tasks. Using systems of simultaneous discrete choice models, I estimate each family member's choice of involvement as a static discrete game under complete and incomplete information assumptions. I find that completing one's tasks is the preferred strategy for families in which the mother or father participated in the case planning process. Completing one's tasks also appears to be the preferred strategy for families with very young children, children who were six to 10 years old at the time of the report, and families in which the mother was not the alleged abuser.

▼ This dissertation presents an extended organism framework that is directly applicable to the study of
strategic media skill. The framework posits that it can be helpful in understanding the human cognizer’s adaptiveness and success of memory in a digital ecology to consider the characteristics of digital memory—the body of rote knowledge and various features of digital technology—as part of the human-technology extended organism, rather than an external environment on which the cognizer acts. It proposes three major subprocesses of
strategic media skill:
strategic encoding, metacognition, and identifying technological biases. This paper applies the framework to the case of offloading cognition to external devices to demonstrate its applicability. The extended organism framework, as it stands now, provides a conceptual-theoretical lens for predicting and explaining findings about
strategic media skill, especially from an effects tradition, and for asking questions about the cognitive processing underlying
strategic media skill. Using this perspective and these approaches to empirical investigations, researchers should be able to better understand the successes and failures of memory and cognition in a digital ecology, currently characterized by near-constant access to external information via dynamic and changing digital media devices. The ability to do this will allow media users to know the cognitive consequences associated with different actions and strategies and to make better decisions about when and how to use digital media to accomplish their goals.

▼ The Resource Based View suggests that firms that are
most successful possess certain unique resources. This logic has
been applied to a wide variety of
strategic choices such as market
entry and mergers & acquisitions among others. An implicit
assumption is that such resources or the value from such resources
are perfectly observed by all concerned. However, in reality
resources are imperfectly observed. Through three essays, this
dissertation develops models to study the role of imperfect
observability on
strategic choices. Theoretically it is shown that
unobservability can lead to a counter intuitive position where
firms that may indeed possess valuable resources fail to capture
sustainable advantages. Similarly, it is shown that firms can
consider using noisy signals to reduce the unobservability problem
and thereby induce an outcome favorable to them. We demonstrate
this in two settings. First, where potential target firms may use
signals such as open market repurchases to attract more bidders and
thus gain superior valuations. Second, we also examine the case
where firms use market entry as a signal of their inherent
strengths and thus may deter other potential entrants. The
propositions from the theoretical models are also tested
empirically. The structure imposed in the theoretical models
present a difficult challenge from an empirical setting. This
dissertation also develops an apt empirical model which takes into
account the richness of the information structure embedded in the
theoretical models.

▼ The presence of a gap in the relationship between citizens and the political system is a phenomenon that knows no boundaries, which affects governments and political institutions at different scales.Citizens are dissatisfied about the current one-way political
interaction held by an elite which is perceived as corrupt and distant. They would like to see a change, but they do not know how to obtain it. On the other hand, politicians promise changes that are hardly or too slow implemented, reinforcing the perception that the political system is an immutable static entity despite democracy is a dynamic process. Despite numerous initiatives undertaken by organisations and private citizens, aim to turn the tide, they fail to trigger significant changes. In this scenario, where citizens are questioning the current quality of democracy, while some are discouraged in manifesting their concerns, others are pushed to ask for participation extension and shared governance firmly. However, they perceive how they currently lack adequate instruments capable of bridging the noisy flows of information and enabling their request to shared governance come across. From here the relevance of this thesis which aims to apply a conjoint combination of
strategic mid-set,
interaction practices and design for democracy purposes to investigate how to bridge the current gap in the relationship between citizens and the political system and design a solution (desirable, feasible and viable) to enable society in achieving the democratic future they aim for. Thanks to the insights obtained from the extensive multidisciplinary research have been possible to harvest evidence concerning how the current gap is nurtured by the lack of reciprocal information, communication and education which affects citizens and politicians alike. Therefore the importance of realising an intervention at the
interaction level capable of providing citizens and governmental institutions with the adequate instruments to establish anongoing bi-directional
interaction which will enable to bridge public opinion and share governance representing an extension in participation beyond the moment of voting.Upon this goal, ideation and further data collection led to the realization of DEMO as final design articulated on three concepts: DEMO App for citizens, DEMOs Software for institutions and DEMOc Community, a “sub-partes” guarantor for adequate technical functioning and ethical usage of all the parts.Validation shade light about the authentic potential that an instrument like DEMO would have in improving the dynamics (in terms of information, communication and collaboration) and so the overall relationship between citizens and the political system across societal segments and institutional levels. Although several limitations have been identified regarding the ethical sustainability of the concept (which have been addressed in the dedicate reflection section) results remarked the capability of DEMO in activating the participatory spirit in respondents which declared to have lost…

▼ Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to conjecture the change of relative advantages and their interactive relationship during the three-tier supply chain. Based on this change and interactive relationship, strategically formed methods and models are developed. The three-tier supply chain is mainly defined as global brand marketing companies, OEM/ODM manufacturers, and raw material suppliers.
In this study, the OEM/ODM manufacturers, which are the middle-tier, are selected as the research
subject of target enterprises. The proposed analytical method, which mainly focuses on the interactive transformation of QFD relative matrix, is the basis for the
strategic development of the OEM/ODM manufacturers. And we also adopt practical three-tier cases to test and verify, through verification of this strategy by simulation models. The results show that the strategy formed based on the model developed is capable to produce acceptable suggestions for the OEM/ODM manufacturers.

▼ The fundamental question posited by this study was “how do competitors’ pricing changes affect organizations’
strategic pricing behavior?” In answering this question, this study focused on local hotel managers’ competitive pricing decisions. The effectiveness of organization’s strategies and marketing often depends on how the organization responds to its competitors’
strategic movements (e.g., Day & Reibstein, 1997; Reibstein & Wittink, 2005). Therefore, it is critical for an organization to take competitors into account in developing
strategic plans.
The hospitality pricing literature has been largely focused on customer-based pricing, where room price was based on customer segmentation strategy (i.e., yield management). Hotel pricing research, however, has not paid close attention to the direct effects of competitors’ pricing on hotel manager’s pricing decisions. This study fills the gap in the hospitality pricing literature by diagnosing the influence of competitors on hotels’
strategic pricing behavior.
Many studies regarding the competitive interactions among firms in price and advertising have been done at the corporate (or brand) level. In spite of the increasing competition and the importance of competitor effects on strategies and performance of local hotels, empirical research regarding the issue is limited. This study fills this gap in the literature by providing insights into the effects of competitive interactions on hotels’
strategic pricing behavior at the local property level.
This study found that competitors’ price changes had a significant influence on hotel managers’
strategic pricing decisions. Specifically, hotel’s room rates were more likely to be influenced by rate changes of competing hotels that were similar in market segment, had a strong market position and a credible commitment to the changes. Local hotel managers were likely to match rate decreases of their rivals that were similar in market segment and had a strong market position. In the case of the rivals’ rate increases, the managers tended to follow the increases when the rate increasing rivals were similar in market segment and had a stronger market position and a credible commitment to the increases. Hotel managers’ outdoing their rivals’ rate changes (either increases or decreases) were unlikely. The managers surpassed their rivals’ rate changes only when certain conditions were met. A greater similarity in market segment between focal and rival hotels, strong brand power of rivals, and higher market demand were the conditions for outdoing rivals’ rate increases, while a greater similarity in market segment, strong brand power of rivals, and their own hotels’ cost leadership strategy were for conditions outdoing rivals’ rate decreases.
This study offers substantial contributions to the hospitality strategy and pricing literature and the competitive dynamics literature by examining the influences of specific characteristics of competitors on
strategic pricing decisions of an organization (i.e., a local hotel). The findings of…

▼ This thesis studies the supply side of the housing market taking into account the
strategic interactions that occur between urban land developers. The thesis starts by
reviewing the literature on new housing supply, concluding that there are very few studies
where
strategic interactions are taken into account. Next, we develop a model with two
urban land developers, who rst decide the quality of housing and then compete in prices,
considering that the marginal production costs depend on the housing quality. First, we
analyze the price competition game and characterize the Nash equilibrium of the price
game. Finally, we examine the rst stage of the game and determine numerically the
subgame perfect Nash equilibrium (SPNE) of the quality-price game.
In the price competition game, our results show that the equilibrium price of an urban
land developer is an increasing function of its own quality, while it is a non-monotonic
function of the rival s quality. The behavior of the equilibrium pro ts reveals that, in
general, urban land developers gain by di¤erentiating their quality. However, the urban
land developer located at the Central Business District (CBD), may prefer to have the
same quality than the rival when transportation costs are high by exploiting its locational
advantage. The analysis of the rst stage of the game also reveals that, in general, the rms best
response is to di¤erentiate their quality and that, in most cases, there are two subgame
perfect Nash equilibria that involve quality di¤erentiation. However, the results depend
on transportation costs and the quality valuation parameter. For small quality valuations,
in equilibrium, the market is not fully covered and, if the unit transportation costs are
high, only the urban land developers located at the CBD operates. For higher quality
valuations, all the consumers are served. Furthermore, the equilibrium qualities and
pro ts are increasing with quality valuation parameter.
as interações estratégicas.
aminamos o primeiro estágio do jogo e determinamos numericamente o equilíbrio perfeito
No entanto, o produtor localizado
no Centro (CBD), pode preferir…

Considering a scenario in which a decision maker faces an ambiguous due date for a task, sophisticated decision makers are more inclined to execute the task earlier than the naive ones. There are approximations of stable states with no non-credible threats where people make choices sequentially and try to end up in the minority. Proportional resource allocation is achievable in US presidential primaries whenever the candidates’ aim is to maximize their votes.

▼ Summary: Economic game theory has been a challenge to traditional models of selfish human nature. Resource acquisition games, such as the dictator game, which have been primarily played by adults, have revealed that humans are inclined to share even when it is not in their best interest to do so. Few studies have been conducted on the development of resource distribution in children, and fewer still have explored the effect of context and level of involvement of a second player in such games. In the current study, 179 children from kindergarten, first, and second grades participated in a modified dictator game with another player. Children were randomly assigned to one of four conditions; a control condition, where they played individually with an anonymous player, or one of three experimental conditions with two players who each played with varying levels of involvement with the second player. It was found that kindergarteners shared significantly less across conditions than first and second graders, with first and second graders sharing similar amounts. The presence of another player significantly increased the amount of sharing for all grades. Additionally, second players shared significantly less than first players. Developmental and contextual patterns of sharing are discussed.

▼ This study investigates the relation between the design activity and entrepreneurial ambition of three academic labs: MIT Senseable City Lab, metaLAB (at) Harvard, and Medea at Malmö University. These labs are positioned at the borderland of academic research, as they operate in connection with external stakeholders (industry, NGOs, government institutions) through, for example, joint strategies of intellectual property management or the creation of start-ups. Various economic and social factors motivate the development of these collaborative spaces including the need for academia to secure alternative sources of funding and the political ambition to incorporate knowledge production into the existing value circuits of the market economy. In these spaces, stakeholders with varying interests, agendas, and power positions interact through what can be conflictual and tense processes.
Through the combination of ethnographically inspired methods and a semiotic interpretative framework, the study explores how design practice contributes to value creation in entrepreneurial academic labs. It also focuses on the translation aspect of academic entrepreneurship as emerging from the interrelation of varying and transversal design moves and modes. Spatially dislocated and materially re-articulated within different contexts, the format of the lab actualizes diverse interpretative directions and shifts in meaning relating to multiple stakeholders at certain moments in time. While some moves were pulled toward a linear development process by logic aimed at creating products to be commercialized or publicly showcased, other design moves aimed to preserve complexity and redundancy and retained a high level of openness to external contributions.
To varying extents, the three labs also activated and sustained the more ambiguous aspects of design as a translational practice. In a sense, these three academic labs exemplify in-between spaces that, within the context of the design projects studied, articulate a type of translational entrepreneurship which allows multiple stakeholders to retain their divergences while simultaneously building upon their convergences in coordinated action. This translation activity traveled nonlinear routes but was firmly anchored to what was found to be asymmetrical power dynamics and negotiation as well as certain alliances and actively sustained ambiguity.

▼ Voice-technology is, as the name entails, technology that enables the exchange of information through voice. As this technology is currently growing in adoption and usage of customers, the popularity at organizations and researchers is increasing noticeably as well. Normally new intelligence is associated with impressive high-end capabilities. However, this technology is still in its early stages of development because, although humans may be more capable of speech-interaction, the machine now needs to learn from its users. It is important to understand the principles rooted in human communication in order to understand user’s underlying expectations of conversational interfaces and to design for a desired user experience. Conversational interfaces are creating opportunities for new touchpoints between brands and its customers. It adds a new dimension to a customer’s experience and interaction with brands and their services. Brands need to decide how to behave as one of the partners in the collaboration driving this machine-driven conversation. On top of that, a new challenge is found in how to expose a unique identity without any visual and tangible elements to rely on. Alongside a case study for the lifestyle brand Rituals, a brand-driven strategy is proposed to design a voice-interaction service integrated with personified voice-identity. It is of great importance to form a unique and recognizable position within speech-technology corresponds to the existing brand in order to engage customers with a relatable personality. The Rituals case study is used to extrapolate general guidelines, set out in a design kit. It functions as a practical tool to guide organizations in the innovation process towards a voice-interaction service. This project has found a branded identity in the context of voice-technology, defined by an unique fusion of five components. The brand functions here as an overarching connecting factor.

▼ Environmental policy in the U.S. is often enacted at both the federal level and the state level. This dissertation uses unique data derived from a combination of a detailed simulation model of the U.S. electricity sector and an integrated assessment model of air pollution dispersion and valuation to examine three problems in state and federal environmental policy. These data represent the “taxes” (or shadow cost of abatement) on sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides that are efficient for each state when considering only their own costs and benefits, and also the level of federal uniform tax on the same pollutants that maximizes each state’s net benefits. This data is used in three analyses.
First, we examine the case of environmental federalism. Differences in spillovers across states, together with differences in population density and local cost structures create substantial spatial heterogeneity in the economics of air pollution. Uniform federal control and state level control both have advantages and disadvantages, and it is unclear which is more efficient. For the case of sulfur dioxide (nitrogen oxides), when states choose their own level of pollution, 31.5% (76.2%) of the potential benefits under the nationally optimal scheme are lost. The uniform tax only results in a loss of 0.19% (2.32%) of the potential benefits.
The data derived, which are directly based on the costs and benefits of air pollution, provide a broad measure of constituent interest. These variables are used to explain state adoption of green electricity policies and federal legislative voting on environmental issues. In contrast to previous studies, it is found that constituent interest and ideology are both important determinants in the formation of environmental policy.
Lastly, it is widely known in the literature that states act strategically when choosing policies. This result also persists for state-level environmental stringency. We use unique weighing matrix specifications to distinguish between tax competition and competition based on spillover effects. It is also shown that higher marginal damages of pollution limit
strategic behavior.

▼ Based on interview and survey data, this document explores the logics of these interactions as well as their aggregate outcomes. Unlike customary accounts that portray civilians as mere subjects of belligerent’s power or receptors of their violence, the study of how belligerents and civilians solve what I coin as the “Resource Dilemma” reveals that, rather than passive actors, civilians are
strategic in making a set of decisions, resort to social, cultural and economic capitals, and have the capacity to negotiate the terms of their subjection. As such, this document explores how, why and when civilians cooperate, negotiate, prevaricate, or resist with a belligerent organization’s demand for resources.

▼ This paper explores a small business’s sustainability orientation through a case study, by identifying leadership and organization characteristics of the business that contribute to the sustainability orientation. The studied case is a small hardware store. The case is explored primarily through interviews and supported by in-store observations. It looks into four service areas of the business, and captures the perspective of owner, staff, customers, neighboring businesses as well as a licensee. Led by a notion developed early on in the research and reinforced by case data, business characteristics related to social interactions between the business and its customers are found to be a third dimension in the business’s sustainability orientation in combination with leadership and organization. This study puts forward the importance for small, sustainability-oriented businesses to engage in social interactions, as this is found to have the potential to strengthen the triple bottom line of the business along with leadership and organization.
In order to create a deeper understanding of the case we characterize leadership, organization and social interaction impacts on the sustainability orientation of a small business. This contributes to broaden CSR theory in very small businesses and serve as a basis for practitioners. This study aims at particularizing aspects of a small business’s sustainability orientation. While it is not claimed that the results of this case study are broadly generalizable, learnings are transferrable to other like contexts.

In the literature, debate around environmental federalism is lasting and inconclusive. China has followed the global tendency of decentralization and has adopted a de facto environmental federalism. In this broad and diverse country, local knowledge and expertise is necessary to develop proper solutions for many environmental problems with local and regional nature. However, despite the adopted de facto environmental federalism, dramatic environmental crises and policy failures widespread in China. In particular, more recently, this country has seen arise many problems predicted by the opponents of decentralization. It appears that, contrary to the fiscal decentralization which has been a “helping hand” in resource mobilization and economic growth at the sub-National level, the decentralization of environmental policy implementation has rather been a “grabbing hand” in environmental management. With the purpose of providing a better and detailed understanding of the de facto environmental federalism in…

Greenhouse gases (GHG) play a crucial role in climate regulation. Climate change, due to the accumulation of GHGs in the atmosphere, has many consequences such as extremes weather events (storms, hurricanes, cyclones, floods, heat waves, droughts), extinction of animal and plant species, the increasing prevalence in diseases related to air pollution (e.g.,health respiratory). Industrial pollution contributes to climate change. Moreover, firms which produce the same good are in constant competition and their emission levels differ according to their technology and market power. Facing these deteriorating effects of the behaviour of economic agents on the environment, it is necessary to implement public policies to alleviate GHG emissions. The objective of this thesis is threefold. On the one hand, it aims to analyze pollution in market structures where all agents behave strategically (oligopolistic competition). On the other hand, it aims to carry out comparative static exercises in order to capture the effects of parameter variations on strategic equilibria. Finally, it studies different public policies to regulate emissions related to this pollution. It should be noted here that the thesis focuses more on mitigation than adaptation to climate change. The explored domain is at the junction of environmental economics, and strategic market games.

▼ A vast empirical literature on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) uses cross country regressions to search for the determinants of FDI. The literature is extensive and controversial. The lack of a consensus over the conclusions reached by the wide range of studies investigating the determinants of FDI makes it imperative to examine which, if any, of the conclusions from the existing studies are robust. Chapter 1 uses a variant of Extreme Bound Analysis (EBA) to analyze the sensitivity of the coefficient estimates of the major candidates for the determinants of FDI which have, by far, received most attention in the empirical literature on the determinants of FDI. The EBA indicates that the observed correlations between FDI and many of the controversial variables, that have so far found their place in the empirical literature, are highly sensitive to small alterations in the conditioning information set. Chapter 2 takes as its objective context the growing disparity in the distribution of FDI among the developing nations. While FDI in the developing world has grown fairly rapidly since the late 1980s, a disaggregated analysis demonstrates a considerable imbalance at the macro level. While China stands out as the largest recipient, the Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries and the countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MNA) are experiencing a continuous drying up of inbound FDI. The paper first develops a theoretical model of the economic determinants of FDI and then uses the structural model to identify empirically the causes of, and suggest potential remedies for, the disparity in the distribution of inbound FDI among the developing economies. Inbound FDI is found to be more strongly responsive to regional market size than any other potential determinant in the model, followed by a country's own market size and regional protection, respectively. Chapter 3 extends the analysis presented in chapter 2 to take explicit account of the element of political uncertainty, particularly in view of the powerfully robust correlation between political stability and FDI, observed in chapter 1. Second, while horizontal FDI (the focus of chapter 1) relates closely to the issues raised in the literature on new trade theory and
strategic trade policy, and is more important quantitatively than vertical FDI, the latter is growing rapidly among the developing countries. Chapter 3 presents a theoretical model that takes into account both types of transnational investment. The results re-validate the significant role (pointed out in chapter 2) of regional variables, namely, regional market size and regional protection in a country's FDI. FDI is found to be more strongly responsive to a country's political stability than to any other potential determinant in the politico-economic model, followed by regional market size, regional protection, and own protection respectively.

▼ In an increasingly competitive industry, product availability on the shelf emerges as a key
requirement for increasing the market share and profitability of the retailer. The stock
disruption at the point of sale thus represent a critical problem, capable of causing direct
and indirect losses, both to the retailer and to the supplier. Its importance lies in its ability
to affect the level of customer service, leading to high levels of dissatisfaction that could
lead to loss of loyalty and the possibility of generating inefficiencies in the supply chain.
The central purpose of the present thesis is aimed to provide an enhanced understanding
on the stock disruption causes and strategies. The successfulness of the study is ensured
by an extensive literature review, from where three main questions arises, giving support
to the main goal of the thesis. There are two principal areas causes, prevention and
strategies. Collected theory will the frame of reference to the present project, focused on
Decathlon overview on the matter.
Statements collected go in concordance with the explored theory, despite the lack of
research in the field. Furthermore, it intends to explore impacts on customers and in the
firm.
O sucesso do estudo,
base do estudo.
empresa.

▼ Aerobic rice is becoming a more promising rice cultivation system due to increasing water scarcity for irrigation and occurrence of drought, especially in Australia. Rice cultivation on aerobic soil under rainfed conditions has shown potential for successful rice cultivation in tropical climate. Strategic irrigation during the critical growth period can help reduce the water demand on farm. Central Queensland has an annual rainfall of ca. 800 mm, and about 600 mm occurs during the wet season from December to March; whereas parts of the wet tropical north Queensland receive ca. 3000 mm annual rainfall, and about 1893 mm during the wet season from December to March. The study was carried out at Alton Downs, central Queensland (dry tropics) and South Johnstone, north Queensland (wet tropics) to investigate the phenological, physiological and agronomical responses of 13 different rice varieties with a view to identifying suitable varieties for dry land cultivation. The objectives were to assess rice varieties under i)
rainfed conditions in the wet and dry tropics, ii) rainfed conditions and strategic irrigation condition in the dry tropics, and to iii) identify the physiological, phenological and agronomical traits of rice adaptation under aerobic conditions in the dry and wet tropics. In the dry tropics, the strategic irrigation was provided by drip irrigation and was scheduled when the rice plants showed water deficit symptoms (corresponding to the refill point at 21 mm /100 mm soil water). The average yield of rice varieties under strategic irrigation was significantly higher and the variety best yield (AAT 4) produced up to 5.23 t/ha in the year 2015 under strategic irrigation. The average yield of varieties was increased from 1.5 times (AAT 4) to 16.8 times (AAT 15) with strategic irrigation, as compared to rainfed conditions. The average water productivity was increased by 100 % in 2014 and by 110.3 % in 2015 using strategic irrigation as compared to rainfed. The average water productivity was 0.24 t/ML (in 2014) and 0.61 t/ML (in 2015) under strategic irrigation, whereas it was 0.12 t/ML (in 2014) and 0.29 t/ML (in 2015) under rainfed conditions. The high yielding varieties were early flowering types, which escaped the terminal drought caused by lower rainfall during the flowering stage, whereas the late varieties such as AAT 10, AAT 11 and AAT 15 were among the highest yielders in the wet tropics under rainfed
conditions. The greater yield was associated with greater panicle fertility, leaf area index , higher photosynthetic rate and water use efficiency during flowering, and one of the high yielding varieties (AAT 3) had the highest photosynthetic rate during the grain filling period in both strategic irrigation and rainfed conditions. Root dry weight and root weight density in the top soil layer at 0–15 cm were found to be related to yield under
strategic irrigation, but the varietal characteristic of deep rooting was not correlated with yield. It is important to consider variations in flowering time, yield…
