▼ The objective of the study was to establish the strategic alliances and collaborations as a source of competitive advantage in firm‟s growth and performance. A case study of Safaricom – Commercial Bank of Africa collaboration. Executives were interviewed on the collaborative arrangement of Safaricom/ M-shwari. The study indicated positive development in M-Shwari transactions as indicated by the schedule A appendix IV attached. M-Shwari has greatly increased the revenue base for both Safaricom and CBA since both parties share the financial gains. The study noted the following M-Shwari has registered tremendous success and key success factors attributed to customer loyalty, favorable business terms and good corporate governance; the study cited many challenges namely inability to synchronize efforts and objectives of both firms towards organizational goals. The other challenge was that of high default rate in the alliance based transactions; challenge of failure to address complaints promptly when service failure occurs competition was also registered on a challenge. The study made the following recommendations to increase the loan duration period from the current period of 30 days; more refinement of policies and procedures governing the M-Shwari transactions, with a view to improve its perception in the market place. The study recommended reduction in interest rates to enable customers to increase their borrowing capacity. The study also recommended diversification of services a part from the M-Shwari product. The study made some suggestions for further improvements like more intensified customer research practices to understand the customer better and undertake a SWOT analysis in order to remain competitive

▼ Technology-intensive industries, such as computer industry and bio-pharmaceutical industry, have witnessed a rising trend of strategic alliances between asymmetric partners that vary in many different dimensions such as firm size, social status and market positions. For example, low-status firms enter into alliances with high-status partners, and incumbent firms form alliances with entrant firms. The asymmetry between partners gives rise to distinct tensions and disparities in motivation, commitment and power in the alliances. While prior research has generally acknowledged the homophily argument that firms with same attributes flock together (Chung, Singh, & Lee, 2000, Saxton, 1997), our understanding of these asymmetric alliances has been very limited, especially on the interaction between asymmetric partners and the possible consequences or returns of asymmetric alliances. In this dissertation I attempt to examine the consequences of asymmetric alliances for participating firms. In particular, I develop two essays with one to examine the potential payoff for disadvantageous partners in the asymmetric alliances, and the other one to investigate the payoff for advantageous partners in the asymmetric alliances. In the first essay I set out to examine how the status asymmetry between low-status and high-status alliance partners may influence the low-status firms’ status improvement. This research expands the well-established hypothesis on status endorsement in that low-status firms will improve their status by allying with high-status firms. I draw on social categorization theory to argue that a sharp contrast in status asymmetry between allying firms may initiate the social categorization process, making it harder for low-status firms to gain status improvement. Specifically, I argue that a moderate level of status asymmetry between allying firms enhances the status for low-status firms, while a large status asymmetry results in diminishing status improvement for low-status firms. I further argue that the above relationship is moderated by the degree of status inequality in the status hierarchy and the technological capability of the low-status firms. Data analysis from sample firms in both biopharmaceutical and computer industries largely support the above hypotheses. In the second essay I examine whether incumbent firms can lead technological changes (i.e., introduction of breakthrough innovations) under technological discontinuities by configuring their exploratory alliances with entrant firms. Specifically, I draw on real option perspective to argue that each exploration alliance with entrant firms is taken as a real option by incumbents to address the uncertain nature of technological discontinuities. A moderate number of options in the alliance portfolio help incumbents manage the uncertainties in knowledge discovery and generate breakthrough innovations, while too many options hurt the knowledge discovery. I further contend that industry technological dynamism and partner firms’ technological diversity…

▼ This study attempted to explicate and empirically assess the
impact of tie strength between complementors in
strategic
alliances on firms? innovation and performance using the
embeddedness perspective. The Embeddedness perspective
emphasizes the importance of the social relationships upon which
the firm can draw in its
strategic behavior and performance. By
using a sample of 49 firms in the software industry and collecting
data for a five-year period, the study tested the following four
hypotheses: First, there is a positive relationship between a firm?s
tie strength with its complementors and innovation; second, there
is a positive relationship between a firm?s innovation and its
performance; third, there is a positive relationship between the
strength of a firm?s ties with complementors and their
performance; and fourth, innovation partially mediates the
relationship between tie strength and performance. The first and
second hypotheses were highly supported. The third and fourth
hypotheses were not supported. Basically, the study found that
firms with strong ties with their complementors were likely to
exhibit more innovations. These successful innovations improve
firm performance. As a result, the study suggested that it is
critical for firms in the software industry to increase both the
number and the strength of their
alliances with their
complementors.

▼ Strategic alliances provide opportunities for participating firms to tap into the resources, knowledge, capabilities and skills of their partners. They offer potential for a firm to leverage its resource capabilities and gain sustainable competitive advantage over its competitors. The objectives of this study were to identify the types of strategic alliances that best enhance competitiveness of a firm and whether such alliances actually created competitiveness among commercial banks in Kenya. The study used descriptive case study design where a convenient sample was used to create a sample frame where 33 respondents were considered. The study used structured and semi-structured questionnaires to collect data which was analysed using MS Excel Spreadsheet and relationship among variables established using correlation analysis. The study found that strategic alliances seek to create competitive advantage through collaboration rather than competition. Strategic alliances are also based on mutual trust of partners. The study also established that strategic alliances provide partners with an opportunity to tap into resources, knowledge, capabilities and skills of their partners to gain competitiveness. Finally, the study found that strategic alliances especially non-equity strategic alliances are positive and significantly correlated with organizational competitiveness. The study therefore concluded that strategic alliances create interdependence between the partner firms which bring benefits in the form of intangible assets and capabilities. These assets (superior skills) and capabilities (superior resources) are the main sources of competitive advantage for a firm.

▼ Economic, technological, informational, social and political factors are driving organisations to pursue different forms to enable them to respond more quickly to a dynamic and changing environment. The relationship between business organisations and stakeholders has been evolving. The internationalisation of firms requires the development of skills and knowledge to enable them to compete through cooperation in the form of strategic alliances. The energy industry is high profile in many countries as natural resources are considered to be of national or public interest. The development of activities in this sector are highly influenced by economic, political and social factors. In the energy sector, which is different from other industries, the formation of strategic alliances has been normal practice. In order to face the challenges of an industry where cooperation is essential, the expectation is that their relevance as part of business practice will only increase. Despite their popularity, strategic alliances have a high failure rate. Consequently, there is a need to understand how and why strategic alliances succeed or fail in order to enhance the understanding of their performance. Research in the field is extensive but fragmented and there is insufficient literature on strategic alliances which takes a process theory approach. Conventional processes for the development of strategic alliances fail to integrate the wider elements which influence the alliance’s performance. Therefore, the research aim is to gain an in-depth understanding of the performance of strategic alliances in the energy sector. This is achieved through a qualitative study conducting comprehensive, semi-structured interviews with those with experience in strategic alliance development. Findings and literature show that each strategic alliance is unique - there is no a single definition. There are different types of strategic alliance and this could contribute to viewing strategic alliances as complex. In a dynamic and uncertain environment there is a need for flexibility and the capacity to adapt and accommodate change. The selection of the type of strategic alliance influences the degree of freedom to manage them. This highlights the degree of influence of the individual over the organisation and suggests considering this in the light of institutional theory, and around agency theory. Performance measurement is complex and requires a multi-perspective approach which includes softer metrics and taking stakeholders’ preferences into consideration. Partnering is complex; managing more that one organisation is difficult as they have different cultures and ways of working. The sense of equity of rewards for each partner impacts performance. Change is natural and complex, expectations, interests and objectives shift and failure could be merely a perception. Managers in alliances are constrained by the structure selected. In addition, they can face a dilemma over a conflict loyalty to the parent organisation and have some concerns about the future…

Some run towards the vertical integration in order to control the wholeproduction process, others outsource in order to reduce the productions costs, others gofor strategic alliances aiming to strengthen their market positions by bringing the lackedresources and competencies.Aims: To find a defined combination and set of factors that lead to the success of thiskind of partnerships, and to cover the lack of inexistence of one vision of measuring thesuccess of strategic alliances, especially in the service industry.Definition: We find in Varadarajan and Cunningham (1995) that strategic alliances aredefined as "the pooling of specific resources and skills by the cooperating organizationsin order to achieve common goals, as well as goals specific to the individual partners".Completion and Results: The success factors of strategic alliances in general aredifficult to be concretely measured. Still, we managed to find a model that can be usedby these companies as a guideline for the evaluation.Search terms: Strategic alliances, collaboration, success measurement, success factors, service industry

▼ Using the knowledge-based view, this study seeks to understand the relationship between firm
strategic orientation and interorganizational knowledge management in
strategic supply chain
alliances of high technology firms. Unique to prior literature, this study relates three dimensions of
strategic orientation (alliance, leadership, and learning) with two modes of interorganizational knowledge management (knowledge creation and knowledge acquisition) and measures the impact of knowledge management on firm performance. Data was collected through self-response survey completed by top executives of high-technology firms. Multiple regression analysis was used to test the theoretical hypotheses.

▼ The literature on strategic alliances has extensively studied factors that contribute to the formation of alliances, choice of alliance governance, and predictors of alliance termination. However, despite extant evidence of high instability of alliance relationships, the post-termination outcomes of alliance dissolutions are understudied. In this dissertation, I try to investigate the impact of alliance termination on partners' future alliance activity. I study alliance outcomes from a social embeddedness perspective and argue that alliance termination can negatively affect firms' abilities to form new relationships, and to maintain their existing relationships. Furthermore, I present two sets of competing hypotheses based on two major benefits of network cohesion: informational advantage and social control. On the one hand, based on the informational advantages of social network, network cohesion can compensate for the adverse effect of alliance termination. On the other hand, collective sanctions and punishments resulting from the social control mechanism may increase the negative outcomes of alliance terminations. Based on the analysis of data on joint venture activities of top global chemical companies from 1990 to 2005, I find support for 1) the negative effect of alliance termination on the partners' alliance activities, and 2) the positive impact of network cohesion on alliance outcomes.

▼ In today’s economic environment, firms that try to digitize products and services face an important challenge. On the one hand, digital products and services are complex, requiring groups of firms working together to be able to develop them. Digital products are modular products, with each product containing large numbers of connected socio-technologically complex components, each offered by a different firm. On the other hand, the overall economic environment has been becoming increasingly complex. In this new environment, a small group of firms control a large amount of value creation and distribution in the network. This small group of firms frequently attack other industries using a novel mode of competition. Therefore, the challenge that firms increasingly face is that they need to form partnerships required for producing complex digital products and services in an increasingly complex business environment.
This dissertation addresses this challenge, and reveals mechanisms through which firms can co-create value from digitizing their products and services in a complex environment. First, I explore the network of
strategic alliances between, in order to gain a better understanding about the structural changes of firms’ partnerships. Introducing two network based measures for identifying hub firms and capturing the hub characteristics of industries, I identified a general pattern of change toward a hub economy. Second, I introduced a digital proximity measure, capturing firms’ success in digitizing their products and services. My results reveal a causal relationship between gaining high levels of digital proximity and firms’ superior performance. Third, I explored the question of how firms’ can safeguard the value that they generate through their
alliances. Using partners’ acquisition of technology firms as exogenous shocks, I found a collaborative design of the partnerships as a mechanism that can help firms against their partners’
strategic behavior.
This dissertation is one of the first attempts toward gaining an empirical understanding about the increasingly complex economic environment. I introduce empirical approaches for quantifying the hub economy and firms’ success in digitizing products and services in such an environment. My results reveal mechanisms that could help firms in overcoming challenges created by this new economy reality.

▼ Background: The Kenyan financial sector has recently been growing at high rate due to the inclusion of individuals who previously were unable access banking services. This has led to a competitive situation where banks and micro finance institutions are searching for ways to manage in this competitive sector. In addition, mobile phone companies are now considered as a competitive threat.
Aim:
This study will look into how strategic alliances between banks and mobile phone companies can be used to overcome these challenges with a specific focus on the recent alliance between Equity Bank (Kenya), and Safaricom Ltd. The study will also focus on the management of strategic alliances within different industries.
Method:
The analysis of this study is based on qualitative research including the use of interviews with members of both organizations and secondary data which includes written documentation and analysis of previously recorded discussions about the alliance with different members of both organizations.
Results:
The authors found strategic alliances can be used as a tool which enables firms to overcome threats from their competitors while gaining additional benefits. In terms of alliance management, the use of separate teams was found to be an effective management tool in cross industry alliances.

This work of doctoral research aims to examine the interactions between multinationals, Algerian companies and their common firms and identify the impact on the structure and culture developed within it. It also aims to examine the characteristics of the structure and culture of international dyadic alliances and understand their specificities in the Algerian context. Finally, another objective it is reviewing the decision model in the alliance and the identification of the roles of the joint venture, the local parent and the multinational. To do this we assume acknowledged, in literature, stipulating that multinational position of strength, seek to impose their structure model to the common firm and develop their own culture within it. They also…

While strategic alliances have been the subject of several studies in strategic management, this phenomenon under stress remains little explored. This thesis will study the concept of stressed strategic alliances, which it develops by enlarging the strategic perspective of stress in organizations. It…

Economic globalization and internationalization of markets have led to an unprecedented development of strategic alliances. Many research projects have tried to describe and explain this phenomenon, some via exploration of modes of governance. Contractual and relational governance are the two modes of governance identified and theorized upon in the majority of these works. Extending this research avenue further in the area of Management Sciences, a prominent place is held by the relationship between mode of governance and performance. Based on this corpus, this research aims to answer the following question: “To what extent can the governance structure improve the performance of an alliance?” Mobilizing transaction cost theory (Williamson, 1985) and social exchange theory (Blau, 1964 ; Homans, 1961) this research develops an integrative model through nine research hypotheses in an effort to understand the link between contractual governance, relational governance and performance of strategic alliances. Thanks to collaboration with the French Biotech association, the model has been tested using a representative sample of French Biotech firms. The research hypotheses were validate using the PLS method. Three main important results emerge : contractual…

This research work benefited from a four-year immersion in Michelin. In fact, I integrated the company in 2010 as Digital Communication Manager for one year before starting my doctoral thesis as part of a CIFRE partnership. This immersion allowed me to have a privileged access to internal sources of information, which proved to be essential for…

Regarding marketing activities, the study aims to observe five specified activities, and these, marketing organization, marketing information system, segmentation and positioning, marketing mix and strategic marketing planning. Regarding methodology, the research is classified as descriptive, quantitative and cross. The application came from a sample of 88 companies belonging to the register of FIEP. As to conclusions, we highlight the existence of a median line marketing activities, however, with increasing the level of alignment, it also increases the performance of marketing activities. There is equally the limited availability of enterprises in the marketing department, however, with the implementation of activities often in those departments. Although it may be mentioned the low use of marketing activities in industries, so that they are significantly associated with the existence of a specific marketing department.

▼ This study offers insight into the perceived leadership behaviour of sales managers in a pharmaceutical organisation in South Africa. The study specifically investigated the extent of the relationship between leadership behaviour of sales managers and motivation of sales teams during the implementation of
strategic alliances. The study followed a mixed methods approach and had a correlational research design. The population in this study was the fifty four (54) sales representatives and their respective sales managers of the six sales teams identified, who are directly responsible for implementing
strategic alliances. The population was demarcated into six (6) sales teams with each team reporting to a separate sales manager. Inferential and descriptive statistics were used to analyse the data. The quantitative data were analysed using Pearson’s correlation coefficient (r). The qualitative component was analysed using a content analysis. The findings of the correlation analysis suggest that an overall positive and moderate relationship exist between autocratic leadership behaviour of sales managers and the motivation of sales teams. A similar relationship exists between team leadership and extrinsic motivation. A positive and weak relationship exists between directive and supportive leadership and motivation. Similarly, a positive and weak relationship exists between team leadership and intrinsic motivation. However, the extent to which these relationships exist varies between the sales teams. The findings of the content analysis indicate that task-oriented leadership behaviour may exert the strongest motivator for sales teams when implementing
strategic alliances.

Summary of findings, implications and conclusion – References – Appendices.
Research has widely acknowledged the beneficial impact of ambidexterity—the balance between exploration and exploitation — on a firm’s performance outcomes such as innovativeness and financial performance. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), however, are especially challenged to simultaneously pursue both exploration and exploitation because they cannot rely on the same slack resources and administrative systems that larger firms can. While prior research indicates that SMEs might develop firm capabilities to overcome resource constraints and profit from ambidexterity, the results are either inconclusive or there are too few studies to confirm these assumptions. This dissertation explains how SMEs can use capabilities such as contextual ambidexterity and absorptive capacity in order to capitalize on the outcomes resulting from the balance of inter- and intrafirm exploration and exploitation. Specific findings from this conceptual and empirical work are that (1) A tailored approach to absorptive capacity amplifies the effect of ambidexterity in small firms; (2) national context and its effect on leadership affects the level of ambidexterity; and (3) incorporating social-integration measures boosts potential and realized absorptive capacity and their complementary effects on firm performance.
Study 1, titled A capability-based framework to capture the performance outcomes of alliance ambidexterity : the moderating roles of contextual ambidexterity and absorptive capacity, indicates that both contextual ambidexterity and absorptive capacity enable smaller firms to overcome the negative impacts of alliance ambidexterity resulting from operational redundancy and coordination conflicts by using their limited financial and managerial resources more efficiently to balance their alliances. This integrative approach to multiple levels of ambidexterity and absorptive capacity provides a…

▼ Regional economic integration is the current trend of the global economy and the number of global free trade agreements are increasing year on year. East Asian countries are also active in the area of multilateral and bilateral trade agreements. The factors in the East Asia region are not only economic factors, but also the strong
strategic and geopolitical implications. If Taiwan is excluded from regional integration, Taiwan will face serious challenges in economic and diplomacy with neighboring East Asian countries. In order to prevent such a situation, the government of Taiwan energetically promote economic partnerships and agreements with other countries. Taiwanese companies are also rapidly adjusting business strategies with major trading nations building
strategic alliances.
A study into the Taiwan -Japan investment agreement shows that both countries have benefited through East Asian regional integration and a mutually beneficial
strategic alliance between the two countries. The motivating factors for this agreement is that Taiwan hopes to shorten the technological gap with Japan and Japan is wanting to deepen the
strategic alliance utilising the advantages of Taiwanese businesses. The contents of investment agreement make new ways of cooperation between the Taiwan and Japans
strategic alliance. Today, Taiwanese and Japanese industry and business work together across many different products and services broadening the cooperation between the countries.

▼ This research was conducted to identify whether
South African 3 star and above hotels are interested in forming
alliances. The objective of this study was to group South African
independent 3 star and above hotels on the alliance framework
continuum, namely; cooperation, collaboration, coordination and
coadunation; and to identify whether South African independent 3
star and above hotels are interested to progress from one simple
form of alliance to the next complex, formal type of alliance.
Hypotheses were proposed to determine the significance of the
differences in preference of South African 3 star and above
independent hotels. Thus, this study is descriptive in nature, to
test the proposed hypotheses. An extensive investigation into the
relevant literature was done. An empirical study was also conducted
and the measuring instrument consisted of a selfadministered
questionnaire. The population selected consisted of managers of
these South African 3 star and above independent hotels. The major
findings included: South African independent 3 star and above
hotels seem to prefer niche personality and potential non-financial
relationship, while they try to avoid economic and cultural
integration with a partner firm and not interested in shared
management control with the partner firm. Besides, four factors
confirmed the alliance continuum developed by Bailey and Koney
(2000), namely; cooperation, coordination, collaboration and
coadunation. Friedman’s test indicated that there is significant
difference among the different dimensions of alliance formation,
namely; cooperation, collaboration, coordination and coadunation
and that South African independent 3 star and above hotels are
interested to form cooperation form of
alliances mostly, followed
by coordination form of
alliances. South African independent 3 star
and above hotels are neutral on whether to form collaboration type
of
alliances and they are not interested to involve in the
coadunation form of
alliances. Chi-square test indicated that there
is no significant difference on the opinion of the respondents on
whether the hotel they work for needs to progress from simpler form
of
alliances into more formal and complex format of
alliances.
However, those who preferred that their hotel has to progress from
simpler form of alliance are higher in number than those who did
not prefer. It was, inter alia, recommended that as South African 3
star and above hotels choose lower form of alliance, value chains
seem the most applicable form of alliance. Hotels could share a
name, reservation information and some basic IT facilities (point
of sale IT reservation equipment and back office IT equipments).
Finally, the study concludes by recommending that South African
independent 3 star and above hotels should take
alliances as an
option for growth and justification of expenditures and decide the
level of alliance continuum they want to engage in.

The progress of consolidation in the banking and insurance in Brazil, the increase in competition with the leadership contest, the regulatory changes and the increasing participation of insurance in the outcome of banking conglomerates have encouraged the review of strategies by banks. Within this perspective, strategic alliances with insurers emerge as an important means to achieve competitive advantage. This paper aims to describe and analyze the characteristics of strategic alliances between banks and insurers in Brazil. Thus, were mapped the types of alliances and major movements occurred after the Real Plan, in 1994. To identify the goals and motivating factors of the alternative alliances, the criteria used for selection of partners and the main characteristics of these operations were carried out case studies at five institutions. The case study method was chosen because it most fit the type of questions, "how" and "why". In addition, were used secondary data sources in order to give greater consistency to the results obtained in the case studies. The results show the dominance of the Brazilian…

O presente estudo é do tipo quantitativo e descritivo, utilizando o método de levantamento (survey) transversal auto-administrado, onde o questionário ficou disponível on line.
