▼ Nowadays, firms increasingly rely on
strategic alliances to reach out for unique technological knowledge that firms cannot develop internally. However, in previous literature, we find inconsistent findings regarding the drivers and outcomes of a firm's leverage of
alliance partners' technological knowledge. In this dissertation, I consider opposite propositions in prior studies simultaneously and examine two research questions: 1) what motivates a firm to search technological knowledge from
alliance partners? And 2) how configurations of
alliance knowledge and
alliance network affect firm innovation?
I argue that
alliance knowledge search motivation is determined by the allocation of managerial attention to local domains and distant domains. While distant attention motives
alliance knowledge search, local attention suppresses the motivation. I hypothesize that innovation performance below the aspiration level intensifies both local and distant attentions and has an inverted U-shaped relationship with
alliance knowledge search intensity. This curvilinear relationship is moderated by the focal firm's knowledge stock size since firms with large knowledge stock are more likely to develop distant attention in the presence of poor innovation performance.
I further argue that exploration and exploitation play key roles in the configurations of both
alliance knowledge and
alliance network.
Alliance knowledge leveraging can contribute more to firm innovation, if the firm can establish a balance between exploration and exploitation. I propose that balancing exploration and exploitation within a single domain (e.g., search moderately explorative
alliance knowledge) generates great managerial costs. However, firms can balance exploration and exploitation across domains: they can leverage explorative knowledge through exploitative alliances, such as repeated partnerships and strong ties.
I test related hypotheses using longitudinal data from the U.S. biopharmaceutical industry. Results show that: 1) innovation performance below the aspiration level has an inverted U-shaped relationship with
alliance knowledge search, demonstrating that both distant and local attention play important roles in developing the motivation for
alliance knowledge search; 2) increasing knowledge stock size increases both positive and negative effects of innovation performance below aspiration; 3) technological distance of searched
alliance knowledge has a linear negative effect on firm innovation; and 4) leveraging explorative knowledge from repeated partnership, but not strong ties, leads to superior innovation performance, supporting the idea of establishing the balance across domains. The findings make important contributions to
alliance knowledge leveraging, aspiration, and exploration-exploitation literatures. The managerial implications of the study are also discussed.

▼ The research has applied both Resource Dependence Theory and Institutional Theory to analyze the organization and the market factors that will influence the hemodialysis centers in adopting a
strategic alliance, contracting with and choosing the number of
strategic partners. The followings have been examined and analyzed:
1) the current trend of hemodialysis centersâ
strategic alliance, including variety of
alliance partners, number of
strategic alliance, and the degree of an
alliance.
2) the factors that will cause hemodialysis centers to adopt a
strategic alliance.
3) the factors that will affect the hemodialysis centers to contract with their
strategic alliance partners.
4) the factors that influence centersâ choosing
alliance partner(s).
Questionnaires and collection of secondary dada were conducted. The empirical analysis of the 219 valid questionnaires shows that hemodialysis centersâ
strategic alliance decision is influenced by coerce, normativeness and mimicry caused more by institutional environment than by resource environment. However, after an
alliance has been adopted, the resource environment has more influence than institutional environment in deciding whether to contract with
strategic partners. The research found the number of
strategic alliance partners is not influenced by the resource or institutional environment factors.
This research found both theories play different roles at the different stages of adopting
strategic alliance and contracting with partners. The finding not only can help examine the theory framework but also be quite useful to insurance policy decision making and to centersâ daily operation.

▼ Abstract
The main purpose of this research & analysis report is to suggest a working model between a world leading connector distribution firm and a world leading connector manufacturer firm that will guide them to improved sales performance, increased profitability, and higher levels of customer satisfaction. However, a lack of trust and commitment is keeping them from accomplishing these outcomes. Without trust, there is no commitment. Without commitment, there can be no meaningful change.
The method of this research is to first analyze the theories developed in the past for working partnership between distribution firms and manufacturer firms and then, the empirical studies conducted for the same period of time. Among the theories and empirical studies, we focus on how to bond the relationship by using influence (or power), dependence, functional conflict, and cooperation. More specifically, these factors or variables are somewhat related to idiosyncratic investments and contractual terms which provide the two parties with the options to compare pros and cons of taking the next step for relationship bonding. Other ways that may affect their common interest are to form a
strategic alliance or joint venture that will provide a competitive advantage for both companies to win the business in this highly competitive environment.
At the end of this research, we use a case study to represent potential relationship issues that still go on in todayâs business environment which occurred decades ago. Then, we apply the theories and studies and provide suggestions to both leading connector distributor and manufacturer on how to strengthen working relationship in todayâs competitive business environment.

This work project's main objective is to identify the motivations behind the strategic alliance between Harley-Davidson and Porsche. In that sense, this paper includes a case study on the specific context of that collaboration and a literature review as the basis of its analysis. As a result, the major conclusion was that the drivers of that alliance indeed agreed with the general theories on the matter. Factors as venturing on new segments of the market or having access to unique resources worked in favor of this partnership, as Harley's new engine and motorcycle proved to be a global success.

▼ Due to several shifts in the construction industry, organisations start to collaborate. An example of this inter-organisational collaboration is a strategic alliance. Such an alliance can be defined as a close, long-term, mutually beneficial agreement between two or more partners in which resources, knowledge, and capabilities are shared with the objective of enhancing the competitive position of each partner (Spekman, Forbes, Isabella and MacAvoy, 1998). 50 to 60% of those alliances fails and one aspect for success is the organisation (De Man, 2006; Kalmback and Roussel, 1999). However, not much research has been performed to the organisation (Albers, Wohlgezoen and Zajac, 2013). This thesis focusses on the organisation of strategic alliances in which the Dutch engineering agency Sweco participates. Based on the grounded theory approach, the phenomenon strategic alliances has been explored. The combination of a literature review and an empirical research in which the cases Robuust Watersysteem, Ballast Nedam, Strukton and Dekker are analysed, has resulted in a first understanding of strategic alliances. The main conclusion is that strategic alliances in which Sweco participates are based on coincidence and do not have a very clear organisational structure. Hypotheses are that instead of strategic alliances, the collaborations are more tactical alliances. Second one is that there is a relation between the number of participants and the organisational structure. Final hypothesis is that due to the project-based orientation of the construction industry, strategic alliances in this industry are less likely to succeed compared to alliances in a less project-based orientation

Strategic alliances in recent decades experienced a strong growth both in terms of firms management practices and in terms of academic research. This growth has been accompanied by many controversy concerning their outcomes (performance) and the factors influencing these outcomes. Through this research, our objective is to understand the phenomenon of asymmetric strategic alliances by identifying its main characteristics and factors that may positively or negatively influence its performance. In this perspective, our research first phase consisted of the realization of a state of the art on the concepts of strategic alliances in general, asymmetric alliances in particular and performance. On this basis, we established eight research hypotheses that we tested by adopting a qualitative approach by studying 10 cases of asymmetric alliances. Our empirical application concerned strategic alliances between French SMEs and multinational companies operating in the aviation industry and was conducted from the perspective of SMEs involved. ▼ In this study I investigate the organizational
mechanisms (pathways) through which strategic investors can help a
firm improve performance. Many commercial banks in China have
recently invited foreign banks as strategic investors since China’s
entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO), hoping to gain
managerial and technological knowhow from the foreign banks. Using
Shanghai Pudong Development Bank as a representative example, I
conduct an in-depth qualitative analysis about how the joining of
Citi Bank as a strategic investor has helped the local Chinese bank
improve its financial performance. On the basis of a comprehensive
review of the relevant literature, I first develop a theoretical
model that describes the organizational mechanisms (pathways)
through which foreign strategic investors can influence the local
bank’s performance. Specifically, by participation in corporate
governance, the foreign strategic investor can have a positive
influence over the local bank’s strategy development, operational
targets, incentive systems, and organizational culture, which
consequently lead to improvements in the local banks operations and
financial performance. I then use a case study method to
substantiate the logic and the pathways of the model with the
detailed information collected from the Shanghai Pudong Development
Bank and Citi Bank strategic alliance. The results are consistent
with the model’s descriptive validity.

▼ This dissertation progresses the notion of group faultlines by explaining how group processes and outcomes result from the interplay between group faultlines and group context, specifically in groups with members from different organizations. Group faultlines, which are alignments of multiple diversity attributes in groups, have been shown to strongly affect group functioning. In current research, a broad definition of faultlines and a main focus on the direct effects of faultlines has resulted in inconclusive findings with both positive and negative effects. While it is widely recognized that the effects of faultlines are contingent on the “group’s task context”, these contingencies are rarely included in group faultline theory. I aim to facilitate more precise assertions by segregating context from the conceptualization of faultlines and reposition context in the faultline framework to account for its effects. To this end, I decontextualize the concept of faultlines, and propose that context can be captured by distinguishing between subgroup activators and deactivators. In an experiment study I address the role of subgroup formation from faultline in relation to conflicts and outcomes and furthermore introduce and test the notion of cascading faultlines, to explain how faultlines in one team can activate faultlines and subgroups in another team. Where previous alliance research mostly resides on the macro-level, I next construct an alliance multiteam system (AMTS) framework in order to provide researchers with a meso-level approach to strategic alliances and a collaborative platform for future research. Extending from this AMTS platform I conduct a case study to investigate faultlines and their effects on alliance instability in order to conceptualize faultlines on the AMTS level and get insights on their activation and deactivation. My conceptual studies, experiment, and case study indicate that team contextual elements, such as goal and mental model asymmetries, can trigger processes within and between teams that can lead teams and even networks of teams to break along their faultlines, where other elements can strengthen team internal structures. Key contributions to the faultline literature are a more profound view on the conditions under which faultlines affect group processes and outcomes within and between teams, a more profound understanding of group faultlines in multiteam systems and the performance of strategic alliances as a result of within and between team faultlines.

▼ The semiconductor components are the base of electronic products connected with electricity, which is also the core parts in electronics industry and can be applied on any electric products. The upstream was composed by Microcontroller ICãLogic ICãMemory ICãPassive components and other IC manufactures While downstream includes computer, telecommunication, information and consumer electronics manufactures. Nowadays, the Semiconductor distributors not only delicate in selling and procuring activities, but actively provide the professional value-added services to their up and downstream vendors (such as product design concept and integration) and properly coordinate the demand and supply in the competitive market. In this specific production and distribution structure, the semiconductor distributors develop a harmonious relationship with their upstream supplier and downstream product manufacture and play an important role in communication and coordination in the
highly competitive semiconductor industry.
Thereâs no doubt that semiconductor distributor plays an extremely critical role in the present industry. Theyâve radically changed from making profit of buying -selling activities into assisting their clients on business expansion, technical support, financing and coordination between supply and demand of stock. In short, it has
became a non-negligible aspect in the semiconductor supply chain.
Nevertheless, new competitors have been sprung up like mushrooms into this industry by providing highly creative and differential services. Though the revenue increased, the cost was soaring as well, which offset the increase of profit and lead to higher degree of financial leverage. The situation will be getting worse with the higher employee turnover rate and cause thorny operational problems, this vicious circle even results in the prosperity of
alliance and M&A activities, and itâs inevitable has promoted
semiconductor industry to be the situation that the bigger the stronger.
This study takes an example of the semiconductor distributor (Company Z) who was the agent of Japanese famous brand and consumer electronics for a long period of time. This paper not only explores how the case company could transform from an electric channel into an entrepreneur delivering completed product design proposals, but the transformation of their
strategic planning, supply chain modification, transforming opportunities and their strength and weakness in present. We also address our suggestion in order to help the case company. Through the competitive strategy and semiconductor industry analysis, we will to get a better understanding in our current domestic semiconductor distributor industry and their future development.
The study develops the industrial developing
strategic analysis and competitive advantage by investigating the external environment and industry condition. The structure was composed by the theoretical literature, five forces model and SWOT diagram to understand the strength, weakness, opportunity and threat of Taiwanese…

▼ More and more industries have collaborated aggressively with other fields, and try to strengthen their relationship recently in cultural creative industries. However, people always focus their attention on the successful reason of executing
alliance, but they ignore the successful reason of concluding
alliance. The process of concluding
alliance usually come fault because of the gap in their concept. For the reason, this thesis will research the factor of concluding
alliance successfully.
According to the process of concluding
alliance, we have known the result of concluding
alliance would have affected by motive, partner selection and the type of
alliance. The
alliance could conclude when the factor match up with each other. Base on this structure, the thesis try to explore which reason affecting the
alliance conclusion.
This thesis applied in-depth interview method to gather the firsthand information of the cultural creative industries. According to the research structure and firsthand information, it could generalize five successful factor of concluding

▼ The United States’ most vulnerable allies in East Asia are beginning to rethink their security strategies. Historically, “nuclear umbrella” states in East Asia, or major non-nuclear U.S. allies who are threatened by the nuclear forces of regional adversaries, have relied primarily on U.S. extended deterrence to counter security threats. More recently, however, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan have begun to take advantage of new advances in manufacturing and satellite-based modeling technologies in order to independently develop, or consider developing, advanced military capabilities, which were previously only available to nuclear-armed states. In light of these developments, this research explores the implications of new and emerging technologies on nuclear deterrence and stability. It does so by examining why non-nuclear allies, who are guaranteed protection by the nuclear forces of a major-power ally, are seeking enhanced conventional capabilities. Using the Republic of Korea (ROK) as a case study, this project explores the question: why is South Korea, despite being protected by the U.S. nuclear umbrella, acquiring independent
strategic military capabilities? I argue that South Korea’s decision to acquire independent
strategic weapons is driven by its perception of the inadequacy of current forms of extended deterrence to ensure its security and that it allows South Korea to affect outcomes regarding
strategic stability in the Korean peninsula. By extension, this research also argues that new and emerging technologies are offering non-nuclear allies like South Korea the means through which to reshape the asymmetrical relationship between the patron state providing extended deterrence and the client state, with implications for regional and international security dynamics.

▼ This study is motivated by a desire to understand the role of boundary spanners in creating satisfactory
alliance. Specifically, the relationships between organizational culture, boundary spanner, and
alliance performance were examined. In general, results from an empirical investigation with 116
alliance experiences supported the notion that
alliance partners with higher similarity of organizational culture perceived higher
alliance performance. By the same token, higher capabilities of boundary spanners lead to higher
alliance performance. Furthermore, the relationships between the organizational culture and
alliance performance were mediated through their boundary spannersâ capability.

▼ Along with the advance of era of scientific technology, Product unceasing weeding through the old to bring forth the new, How to emerge in numerous like products, Except that must join externally popularlyãSimple operation outside element, The intrinsic function also needs to be formidable and stable, And also needs to consider safety regulations and that the demand of environment protection various countries proposed, such as EU, North America and Japan and other countries already set the request of environmental protection to the electron and information product one after another. Therefore the technology and production process of product must continuously renew, Can be able to follow the footsteps of producer research and development, But the design of printed wiring board (PCB layout) in process of research and development the technical capability is important, Because it to the function and stable and Ann gauge product whether can through having the decisive influence, Therefore the R&D department and relations of PCB of layout Corporation Electronic Co. are close, but PCB layout Corporation also hopes that strengthens and improves the loyalty of customer with customer's partnership, this is also the
subject of research this discussion.
This research and discusses the domestic and foreign related literature after the depth interview, Reorganizes to be the value of this industrial customer, Also is affects the customer satisfaction five tremendous influence factors, product quality, price, delivery date, service quality and
strategic alliance one-stop services as the key point of this depth interview, In the share of operation and experience because of these case company practices, after the material collection and analysis reorganized, reached several main conclusions:
1. The customers seek for the way majority of PCB layout Corporation introduced by the friend or the engineer, because the friend cooperates has been able to understand the way of its ability and coordination.
2. The customers choose the condition of PCB layout Corporation, mainly looked that which manufacturers is capable of making the product of company and has cooperated as the main condition of choice.
3. The life cycle of product is long, such as server and IPC industry, because pursues the high stability. Therefore the importance of quality is bigger than the delivery date. But the life cycle of product short such as notebook industry or consumption product, then the importance of delivery date is bigger than the quality.
4. The notebook industry of consisting mainly of the ODM/OEM customer, is bigger than the quality to the delivery date importance. but company that gives priority to the private brand, because the time can control, therefore the importance of quality is bigger than the delivery date.
5. The price to the layout stage is not the important key aspect, the low price strategy to the customer not too strong attraction.
6. The service quality the degree of scale small company well-respected is much greater than the larger scale…

▼ National Health Insurance in Taiwan has been implemented since March 1, 1995. With changes and challenges of medical treatment policy and environment, the
strategic management of medical treatment should be re-adjusted. In order to adapt to the new healthcare environment, the different
strategic alliances will be adopted by private sectors. By doing so, the organizations would gain the necessary resources, such as patients, and financial supports, to achieve the goals of mutual benefit.
The purposes of this study were to examine the financial performance before and after
strategic alliance, and to investigate the patient satisfaction after the implementation.
The research is divided three parts to discuss:
1. Financial achievement: to gather the relatively financial data of implementing
strategic alliance around ten months in A clinic and B hospital to discuss the efficiency of
strategic alliance.
2. Efficiency evaluation after employees knows the implement of
strategic alliance: the research will take the employees in five hospitals and clinics that have participated in policy
alliance as a sample with questionnaire investigation to discuss whether "the management achievement evaluation of
strategic alliance" has any significant difference in the different characteristics of the employees.
3. Satisfaction of going to doctors after
strategic alliance has implemented: the research will take the patients who accept retina operation as a sample with telephone questionnaire investigation after the implement of
strategic alliance to discuss whether the characteristics of patients satisfaction of going to doctors have any significant difference, and whether the medical treatment result, the process of going to doctors, and the process of medical treatment have any significant difference.
The research found the followings:
1. Before implementing
strategic alliance, we have evaluated A clinic's advantages, disadvantages, and its purpose of establishing
strategic alliance. It found that
strategic alliance is workable for A clinic for long-term. Moreover, for retina operation, basing on financial achievement, the management gross profit increases after the
strategic alliance.
2. The management achievement evaluation of the personal characteristics are significant difference of the evaluation of the customer-guide.
3. The patients characteristics of the education degree, the satisfaction of the process in going to doctorsâ, and âthe satisfaction of the process in medical treatmentâ have the significant difference.
4. âThe medical treatment resultâ, âthe satisfaction of the process in going to doctorsâ, and âthe satisfaction of the process in medical treatmentâ of the patients reveals the significant difference.
5. âThe degree of the disease improvementâ and âthe medical treatment processâ of the patients is in the positive relation.

▼ The travel industry is located at the midstream of the tourism and plays a crucial role in the integration of resources. However, due to its susceptibility to the season, business prosperity, and natural or man-made disasters, the market demand in travel industry is fairly instable. Moreover, the entry-barrier is rather low in this industry, which makes it so competitive that no single enterprise can predominate over others. Consequently, to form a
strategic alliance has become an imperative to survive, and a PAK
alliance has been proved to be effective in practice for many years. Many travel agencies in Taiwan have taken advantage of a PAK
alliance to achieve goals like a high corporate achievement or product-line expansionâ¦etc.
This research discusses chiefly about what attitude the scale of business have when joining in a PAK
alliance, including their motives, partner-selection, and performance improvement. Furthermore, this study probes into key factors of the success of a PAK
alliance and looks into the prospect of tourism.
The major findings of this research are listed below:
1. Large-scale businesses participate in a PAK
alliance mainly in view of the ââmotive of resourcesââ, and put much more emphasis on the ââmarket strengthââ of their partners. However, an
alliance offers nearly no help on the part of ââfinancial performancesââ.
2. Middle-scale businesses participate in a PAK
alliance also mainly in view of the ââmotive of resourcesââ, and put much more emphasis on the ââ consistency of business cultureââ between they and their partners. Besides, an
alliance can substantially assist them in gaining ââmarket strengthââ.
3. Small-scale businesses participate in a PAK
alliance mainly in view of the ââmotive of economyââ, and put much more emphasis on the ââ consistency of business cultureââ and âânetworkââ between they and their partners. Besides, an
alliance can substantially assist them in the ââaccumulation of organization competenceââ.
4. Small-scale businesses pay much attention to the influence of ââhuman factorsââ on the success of a PAK
alliance.
5. All types of businesses consider it plausible and inevitable for
alliance members to cause damage to the overall benefit, and when it does happen, they deal passively with it.
6. In the future, businesses would place little importance on PAK
alliance; instead, they are supposed to think highly of the potentiality of their main products if they are competent and the market allows them to do so, and PAK products merely serve to increase the diversity of products.

▼ In past 30 years, the economic in Asia continue rapid growth and go toward globalization. The international airlines are facing heavy challenge for market fast-moving change, the fluctuant oil price and many different styles of carriers continue to join market which caused most competitive for aircargo industry. In order to avoid the kind of dilemma on business running from fierce competitive environment and superfluous space that international carriers have to find out a suitable solution and proper strategy to ensure the competitive advantage of enterprise. Esepcially, it is different condition and pattern for each carrier at the aircargo industry, how to cooperate with other carrier or different industry to create a win-win condition is one major topic for aircargo industry.
In this study, through literature review, by Michael Porterâs Five Forces model to analyze the current status of aircargo industry, review the situation within the industry five kinds of pressure, and then also apply Michael Porter another Theory - competitive advantage of nations to conducted competitiveness strength analysis for Taiwan aircargo industry in international. Followed by Game - theory of co-opetition to search for competitive advantage or
strategic value of corporate
strategic positioning. Finally, we process interviews with experts from aircargo industry to summarize and select features for Air cargoâs Co-opetition and establish hierarchical structure. This study also utilizes the method of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to set up standard hierarchical structure that sent for experts to assess and weight value for each criteria and overall vector.
The research found that the traditional targets which enterprise focus on have changed gradually, such as cost down, space utilization and market shareâ¦etc. which is not major concerning pattern anymore. Replaced as improve service quality, strengthen supply capacity and customize selling rate pattern for different customer. It is different vector and concept which enterprises need to learn. After analyzing, currently, people are easy to search any information from different ways because of the improvement of science technique. Customers will decide and use which they prefer. Another founding, the experts from district of Cross Strait and HongKong all concern the topic for âtraffic rightâ, especially for the experts from Taiwan. It means the policy guidelines of government and dispatch for traffic right are the focus topic for aircargo industry.

▼ Due to the changes in the environment of pharmacy industry, consumers have slowly altered their mode of consumption from going to the pharmacy for the treatment of illness to going there for the enhancement of health. Products used to be the key concern in traditional pharmacies of which the sales-oriented objective results in seeking for the sales of products, but now pharmacies tend to adopt a multifunctional managing strategy, which is demand-oriented aiming at the fulfillment of customer needs by providing the best-selling products while eliminating the dead stock. The transformation of the mode of consumption fosters the managers of pharmacies to identify the importance of multifunction, professionalism, convenience, chain operation, and computerization.
This research adopts both open-ended and focused one-on-one interviews. It examines the factors that would influence the success of
strategic coalition between pharmacies in their inner and outer context, and also the discrepancy in the recognition of factors affecting the success of
strategic coalition in this industry in different areas. By means of this approach, this research sums up the key factors leading to successful
strategic coalition in different areas.
The key factors that need to be considered when conducting
strategic coalition between pharmacies are obtained through case studies, and these factors are: âthe making of governmental policies,â âthe reputation of pharmacies in
strategic coalition,â âan excellent team for business development,â âdeveloping private brands with a high quality and a low price,â âthe establishment of the web,â âthe administrating and distributing system between businesses,â âthe stipulation of marketing strategies and objectives,â âthe application of finance,â and âthe privacy and trust between businesses.â
Due to the geographical difference among the northern, the central, and the southern areas, chain pharmacies in the north prefer indirect franchise through which all businesses can distribute products together to lower their cost in their market distribution, while in the central area chain pharmacies are usually made of one or two pharmacies, collaborating with each other to create private brands. Pharmacies in the southern area achieve a common ideal through participating as a member in the social meeting for study and learning.
âSimplification,â âstandardization,â âprofessionalism,â and âcentralizationâ must be achieved in
strategic coalition between pharmacies with which the professional knowledge of the staff as well as their service would be strengthened to meet the customer needs. The
strategic coalition between businesses in different areas requires mutual trust, but the sharing of interest, the information exchange, and how to achieve joint promotion, joint training, joint purchase, joint logo, as well as joint development are all serious issues that should also be dealt with.

▼ Abstract
Banking industry which contributes significant annual economic growth rate is one of the most important industries in Taiwan. Since the trend that many countries give up the cash-based monetary system, the financial environment grows toward liberalization and globalization. Banking industry has shown more and more influence on the stability of economy. The financial Commissioner of MOU which signed on November 16, 2009 and effected on January 16, 2010 has taken the financial cooperation between Taiwan and China to a new stage. Under the framework of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), Mainland China will become an important part of Taiwan banking industryâs future global distribution.
With the impact of global financial tsunami and European sovereign debt crisis, the overall economic environment of Taiwan banking industry has been more difficult. On the other side, the number of competitor of the same nature increases since 16 new banks are approved to be set up from 1991 to 1992. According to the statistic of Financial Supervisory Commission, Executive Yuan, there is a total of 38 domestic banks with 3,398 branches and a total of 28 foreign banks with 53 branches over Taiwan. The business volume and profitability of traditional banks has been reduced, and wallet share ratio has been declined too. Thus, it is a must that bank adjust their traditional role from borrowing funds to a assist of asset management as quickly as possible to support customers a omni-bearing service provider. After the implement of Financial Holding Company Act in July 2001, the financial legislation has been lifted. It allow not only the establishment of financial holding companies but also the cross-industry operation of banking, insurance, securities, venture capital, investment trust business that providing customers on stop shopping service. Moreover, based on the principle of equity, the financial authority allow non-financial holding companies including banking, insurance, securities could development cross-industry service. Thus, non-financial holding companies should review their future development strategies and opportunities.
The study is based on the simplified financial and insurance market structure which includes a bank and three insurance companies. When a individual bank cooperates with certain insurance company, there are two cooperation modelsâthe establishment of financial holding company and cross-industry
strategic alliance. The establishment of financial holding company adopts âjoint marketingâ mode which vertical and horizontal integrates the flow of business, cash, logistic, information and talent to create a synergy of business profit. However, if there are differences of business culture and philosophy, the benefit may not be shown and may even adversely affect the
alliance. The strength of â
strategic allianceâ lies in the flexibility of operation of business and organization. With the cross-industry operation mode, managers could develop business strategy according to the difference…

▼ This research was conducted to identify whether
South African 3 star and above hotels are interested in forming
alliances. The objective of this study was to group South African
independent 3 star and above hotels on the
alliance framework
continuum, namely; cooperation, collaboration, coordination and
coadunation; and to identify whether South African independent 3
star and above hotels are interested to progress from one simple
form of
alliance to the next complex, formal type of
alliance.
Hypotheses were proposed to determine the significance of the
differences in preference of South African 3 star and above
independent hotels. Thus, this study is descriptive in nature, to
test the proposed hypotheses. An extensive investigation into the
relevant literature was done. An empirical study was also conducted
and the measuring instrument consisted of a selfadministered
questionnaire. The population selected consisted of managers of
these South African 3 star and above independent hotels. The major
findings included: South African independent 3 star and above
hotels seem to prefer niche personality and potential non-financial
relationship, while they try to avoid economic and cultural
integration with a partner firm and not interested in shared
management control with the partner firm. Besides, four factors
confirmed the
alliance continuum developed by Bailey and Koney
(2000), namely; cooperation, coordination, collaboration and
coadunation. Friedman’s test indicated that there is significant
difference among the different dimensions of
alliance formation,
namely; cooperation, collaboration, coordination and coadunation
and that South African independent 3 star and above hotels are
interested to form cooperation form of alliances mostly, followed
by coordination form of alliances. South African independent 3 star
and above hotels are neutral on whether to form collaboration type
of alliances and they are not interested to involve in the
coadunation form of alliances. Chi-square test indicated that there
is no significant difference on the opinion of the respondents on
whether the hotel they work for needs to progress from simpler form
of alliances into more formal and complex format of alliances.
However, those who preferred that their hotel has to progress from
simpler form of
alliance are higher in number than those who did
not prefer. It was, inter alia, recommended that as South African 3
star and above hotels choose lower form of
alliance, value chains
seem the most applicable form of
alliance. Hotels could share a
name, reservation information and some basic IT facilities (point
of sale IT reservation equipment and back office IT equipments).
Finally, the study concludes by recommending that South African
independent 3 star and above hotels should take alliances as an
option for growth and justification of expenditures and decide the
level of
alliance continuum they want to engage in.

RAPID OVER-REACTION: PERCEIVED VALUE CREATION VIA
ALLIANCE ANNOUNCEMENTS
The management literature has widely acknowledged the importance of studying and understanding the determinants of the market's reactions to the announcements of
strategic alliances. With a focus on dyadic alliances, I ask what types of information signaled to the market by the
alliance announcement influence the investors' perception of value. I hypothesize that the type of technical expertise, relationship expertise, and market expertise of each
alliance partner, expressed as either explorative or exploitative, sends decodable signals to the investors, which in turn influences their reaction to the new
alliance announcement. Using a sample of 927 alliances extracted from a unique biopharmaceutical dataset, I proxied investors' reaction to the
alliance announcements by calculating the cumulative abnormal return during a three-day window around the
alliance announcement. I found that while technical expertise does not appear to be a signal that investors consider when valuing firms involved in a new
alliance, both relationship expertise and market expertise showed a statistically significant influence on the investors' perception of value.
ABSTRACT ESSAY 2:
REDUCING INVESTOR ANXIETY VIA
ALLIANCE PARTNER SELECTION
The management literature has recognized
strategic alliances as an organizational form that has the potential to reduce uncertainty. One important step for alliances in order to achieve a reduction in uncertainty is selecting the right partner, one that enables the
alliance to effectively address the specific type of uncertainty it faces. In this study, I specifically address the question of whether the perceived uncertainty of investors at the time of the
alliance announcement is influenced by whether the skills and expertise of the two
alliance partners are similar or complementary (diverse). I suggest that the level of technical expertise, expressed as either explorative or exploitative and interpreted as either similar or complementary, sends a signal to the investors, which in turn will impact their perception of uncertainty. In addition, I study whether this relationship is moderated by the level of exogenous uncertainty faced by the
alliance. Using a sample of 927 alliances extracted from a unique biopharmaceutical dataset, I found that exogenous uncertainty in fact moderates the relationship between partner similarity/ complementarity and investors' perception of uncertainty.
ABSTRACT ESSAY 3:
SPILLOVER EFFECTS IN
ALLIANCE RELATIONSHIPS
Entering multiple simultaneous alliances is a common practice, especially in R&D intense industries. While this strategy may enhance the possibility of success by attempting to simultaneously unlock possible synergistic effects in multiple alliances, it also exposes the
alliance partners to spillover effects created by their partners' alliances. In this study I will examine how one specific action of one partner, to enter…

▼ Alliances between different companies in the supply chain tend to become more important, since individual companies encounter increasing challenges on cost, quality, speed and flexibility issues. Focusing on their core business, companies need to find a balance between the short term transaction model thoughts and strategic intensive cooperation with partners. Unfortunately the short term vision of results in opportunistic buyer behavior. Profound literature study learnt that there has hardly been any study on buyer opportunism, seen through the eyes of the buyer and no specific report has been found on buyer opportunism in strategic supplier alliances. Moreover, conflicting conclusions were found on trust, knowledge sharing, alliance horizon, dependence and formalization as antecedent of buyer opportunism.
The problem statement of this reports therefore is: “What’s the role of opportunistic buyer behavior in strategic supplier alliances?”
A quantitative field study was performed using the Critical incident technique by interviewing 13 buyers and purchase managers, resulting in 29 ‘incidents’. All respondents were employed by Dutch industrial manufacturers, but not in high-tech. Several potential respondents appeared to have no experience with opportunism at all, and half of the respondents who did recall opportunistic incidents could only remember less than three occurrences.
During the study it became clear that in many incidents buyers showed opportunistic behavior that is similar to the advised tactics of the ‘leverage’ quadrant in Kraljic’s matrix, such as exploiting buyer power and single focus on price negotiations.
Opportunistic buyer behavior was categorized in three groups:
1. Buyer breaches agreements
2. Buyer lies and cheats
3. Abuse of buyer power-surplus
Typically, in almost all incidents more than one category appeared, mostly resulting in severe relational damage or even termination. In none of the incidents a single clue was found that there might be positive long term effects resulting from buyer opportunism and therefore we may induce that opportunism is harmful and undesirable in strategic supplier relationships.
Several buyers tend to put part the responsibility of their behavior with their superiors or blame the pressure on short term results or impracticable working procedures. In some cases buyer opportunism was a reaction on preceding supplier opportunism. Finally buyers only applied opportunism when the relation with their supplier was already unsatisfactory. Economical motives and relational discomfort seem to be the basis of buyer opportunism. “Leverage” quadrant power abuse seems to be incorporated in the system of many buyers, but on the other hand in many cases it was the result of a calculated evaluation of risks and consequences.
An etiquette on behavior, better and practicable rules and regulations, monitoring and advocacy could prevent buyers to degrade to opportunism or waive responsibility. Circulation of buyers will prevent buyers from getting personally and…
