U ovom radu vršimo sociolingvističku analizu japanskih termina iz korpusa štampane periodike dostupne u periodu produžene stagancije (2000.-2010. godine). Dati vremenski okvir izabran je zbog specifičnih socioekonomskih okolnosti, koje su izazvale promene u životnim stavovima mlađih generacija, pa samim tim, indirektno, i u jezičkoj upotrebi. U teorijskom delu rada, bavimo se osnovnim postulatima pragmatike, sociolingvistike, leksikologije sa leksikografijom i teorije pojmovne metafore, kao pristupima koji će nam omogućiti da adekvatno metodološki obradimo naš korpus. U empirijskom delu rada, izlažemo materijal prikupljen iz našeg korpusa (iz listova: Asahi Shinbun, Yomiuri Shinbun, Mainichi Shinbun, Nikkei Shinbun, Sankei Shinbun, Tokyo Shinbun, Chunichi Shinbun, Shuukan Economist, Shuukan Toyo Keizai, Shuukan Josei, Yomiuri Weekly, Chuuou Kouron, Ronza, Animeeju, Animedia, Ax), te pristupamo njegovoj sociolingvističkoj analizi i analizi dostupnih pojmovnih metafora. U sociolingvističkom smislu, pokazujemo kako bazični teorijski konstrukti savremene sociolingvistike važe i u japanskom kulturološkom okviru (međusobna uslovljenost jezičke upotrebe i socijalnih faktora, jezički determinizam, jezička relativnost, govorni događaj i govorni akt, upotreba honorifika, odnos jezika i etikecije, jezika i pola, jezika i etniciteta, jezika i politike). U analizi metafora dostupnih u korpusu, donosimo primere kojim se pokazuje da neki od postulata kognitivne lingvistikevaže i u japanskom jeziku (otelovljenje, zavisnost apstraktnih koncepata od percepcije prostornih odnosa i odnosa sila, klasifikacija metafora po izvornim i ciljnim domenima, pitanje odnosa univerzalnog i kulturološkog kod izgradnje metafora, naročito u sportskom vokabularu). Na osnovu naših rezultata sugerišemo da je neophodno sinergetsko izučavanje leksičkih, gramatičkih, semantičkih i kulturoloških (sociolingvističkih, pragmatskih...) veza i odnosa, jer se jedino u međuspletu svih tih analiza mogu shvatiti prava, nameravana značenja upotrebljenih pojmova i konstrukcija. Ovo je jako važno i praktično, kako bi se lakše savladio ovaj daleki strani jezik, ali i teorijski, kao sugestija za buduću bližu saradnju između formalnih i funkcionalnih škola u lingvistici.

▼ With the growth of the Internet, firms have realised the potential of this medium as a tool to expand their businesses and offer enormous benefits to their customers. E-commerce is a way to conduct business transactions online. It provides convenience for people to purchase goods and services at lower costs and without the need of having to speak to someone directly or going into a store. E-commerce assists businesses to develop new markets, increase productivity through cost reductions and establish electronic links between businesses which makes it an integral part of the local and global market. Despite e-commerce having been around since the mid-1990s and attracting more and more attention from businesses and consumers, the adoption of e-commerce is still relatively slow among retailers compared to other ways of doing business. This is due to the lack of understanding of the e-commerce phenomenon and the context that is affecting its adoption. This research aims to provide better understanding of e-commerce adoption among Australian retailers. For this purpose the study interviewed firms from different retail categories and used a combination of Daniel et al.’s (2002) stages of growth (SOG) model and Tornatzky and Fleischer’s (1991) technology-organisation- environment (TOE) framework as the basis to develop an integrated e-commerce model that outlines the evolution of e-commerce from B2C (business to consumer) and B2B (business to business) perspectives. The model will be a useful tool for retailers to have a better understanding of their current state of B2C and B2B initiatives as well as helping them to develop suitable strategies to implement online trade and to sell products and services over the Internet.The data analysis has identified five B2C e-commerce maturity levels: web presence, e-commerce portal, e-commerce implementation, e-commerce integration and enterprise integration. The B2B e-commerce levels describe the involvement of the firm in B2B from simple format interaction through emails and other communication tools over the internet to more sophisticated levels until the final level which represents full integration of online and in-store operations.In addition, the study findings suggest that the defined e-commerce levels are influenced by internal and external factors. However, these factors were found to have a different effect on each level of adoption. In addition, the research findings suggest that organisations can reach a stagnation point from which they have no motivation to move further up to the following e-commerce maturity level either now or in the foreseeable future. Moreover, the study identified anxiety points among e-commerce maturity levels where the retailers were found to be interested in advancing further in their e-commerce implementation to integrate e-commerce with their in-store POS (point-of-sale); however, they were uncertain about proceeding as this move is associated with high human and financial investment. ▼ Cette thèse questionne aussi bien la théorie macroéconomique conventionnelle que les doctrines de politique économique quant à leur capacité d’éclairer et de traiter les problèmes de politiques budgétaires depuis la crise de 2008. Le chapitre introductif propose une analyse descriptive. A la suite d’une longue période de progression de l’endettement public, les déficits plongent pendant la récession mais les taux d’intérêt continuent de baisser à l’exception de quelques pays confrontés à graves déséquilibres budgétaires. L’inflation se stabilise à un niveau faible mais les taux d’intérêt passent au négatif. La croissance potentielle continue de se ralentir et l’hypothèse d’une stagnation séculaire devient plausible. Le deuxième chapitre aborde le rôle des agences de notations et de leur pouvoir réel ou supposé. On a accusé les agences de notation d’accroître les risques de défaut en dégradant la notation des pays en difficulté, provoquant des hausses de taux d’intérêt. On mène une étude empirique sur la récente crise budgétaire qui a touché les GIIPS (Grèce, Irlande, Italie, Portugal et Espagne) au sein de la zone euro. On teste de manière systématique les relations causales entre les notations des trois principales agences (Moody’s, Standard and Poor’s et Fitch Ratings) et les cinq écarts de taux souverains. Ces tests indiquent que c’est plutôt la prime de risque qui cause une variation de la note, et non le contraire. L’agence de notation donne une information qui a déjà été anticipée sur les marchés financiers. Ce résultat doit être nuancé car on détecte une relation causale des avertissements de dégradation (outlook). Le troisième chapitre porte sur les facteurs explicatifs des taux d’intérêt réels. Le modèle standard (AS-AD) affirme que le taux d’intérêt d’équilibre doit augmenter à la suite d’une expansion budgétaire ou à la suite d’un ralentissement de la croissance potentielle, quel que soit le régime (classique, Keynésien ou intermédiaire). Des extensions du modèle nous permettent de tenir compte des influences extérieures, des primes de risque souveraines, de la croissance potentielle et des anticipations. Ceci n’inverse pas les prédictions du modèle et on réconcilie la théorie avec les faits seulement lorsque l’on remet en cause l’hypothèse keynésienne de la propension à consommer. L’introduction d’un comportement de consommation intertemporel (revenu permanent) permet une explication plausible de la conjonction entre croissance lente et taux d’intérêt bas. Nous avons estimé une relation économétrique sur des données annuelles pour un panel de 19 pays de l’OCDE. Ces tests confirment l’influence des facteurs suggérés par les modèles théoriques, en particulier le lien entre diminution des taux d’intérêt et ralentissement économique. Le premier chapitre questionne l'intuition conventionnelle selon laquelle une forte concentration au plus haut de la distribution des revenus devrait favoriser l'émergence de bulles d'actifs rationnelles. J'utilise un modèle OLG avec des fictions financières et des agents hétérogènes qui diffèrent en termes de taux d'épargne, portefeuilles d'actifs et talents. Je montre qu'une forte concentration promeut l'émergence de bulles si et seulement si ces bulles sont illiquides ou si tous les actifs offrent les mêmes rendements. A l'inverse, lorsque les bulles sont liquides et les actifs liquides paient une prime de liquidité, une faible concentration promeut l'émergence de bulles. Le deuxième papier étudie les conditions sous lesquelles une bulle d'actif augmente le PIB dans un modèle OLG-Nouveau Keynesien incluant le capital. Je montre que la stagnation séculaire est une condition nécessaire mais non suffisante. En effet, les bulles ne stimulent le PIB que si la demande agrégée est très fortement déficiente. Le troisième papier démontre que les modèle Nouveaux Keynesiens (NK) font des prédictions paradoxales lorsque la demande agrégée est chroniquement déficiente - un boom séculaire plutôt qu'une stagnation séculaire, et analyse comment ajuster ces modèles pour qu'ils deviennent viables dans l'environnement actuel. Je souligne l'importance cruciale des élasticités de l'offre et de la demande d'actifs par rapport au PIB à long terme ; j'effectue également une connexion entre le boom séculaire et d'autres prévisions paradoxales du modèle NK.

The first chapter questions the conventional intuition that a high concentration of income at the top of the distribution should promote the emergence of rational asset bubbles. I use an OLG model with financial fictions and heterogeneous agents that differ in terms of savings rate, portfolio choices and skills. I show that a high concentration at the top promotes the emergence of asset bubbles if and only if those asset bubbles are illiquid or financial markets are arbitrage-free. Instead, if asset bubbles are liquid and liquid assets pay a premium under illiquid assets, a low concentration promotes the emergence of asset bubbles. The second chapter studies the circumstances under which asset bubbles are expansionary in an OLG-New Keynesian that includes capital. I show that secular stagnation is a necessary but not sufficient condition. Indeed, asset bubbles stimulate investment, consumption and output if and only if there's a strong shortage of aggregate demand. Finally, the third paper shows that "standard" New Keynesian models make puzzling predictions when aggregate demand is chronically deficient they predict a secular boom, and seeks to understand how those models must be adjusted to analyze secular stagnation. I emphasize the crucial role of the long run elasticities of asset demand and supply with respect to the output gap in general equilibrium; and I also connect the secular boom to other puzzling predictions of the New Keynesian model.

Percebe-se, assim, que o anseio pela viagem e a busca de comodidades fora do habitat tem gerado o fortalecimento da indÃstria turÃstica no mundo. Com isso, deve-se atentar para o fato de que o turismo pode ser uma ferramenta capaz de gerar ganhos coletivos desde que seja desenvolvido de forma sustentÃvel. Como exemplo de um espaÃo turÃstico cujas relaÃÃes de uso e ocupaÃÃo se tornaram insustentÃvel estÃ o caso da Praia de Iracema, na cidade de Fortaleza. Constata-se que desde a sua fundaÃÃo como bairro, o objeto evidenciou dois ciclos de existÃncia, vivenciando fases ora de valorizaÃÃo, ora de decadÃncia e em alguns momentos os dois processos de forma simultÃnea, chegando Ã atualidade Ã estagnaÃÃo. Considerando a relevÃncia social do objeto, o presente estudo tem por objetivo entender quais os fatores que contribuÃram para estagnaÃÃo de um espaÃo turÃstico Ã beira-mar. Para tanto, se fez importante a anÃlise histÃrica das fases vividas pelo bairro atravÃs de fontes hemerogrÃficas, tendo como complemento da pesquisa bibliografias relacionadas ao tema. Leisure has become something that people really value nowadays and it's not just about having fun anymore. Based on that, one can perceive that the urge for traveling and the search for confort and pleasure outside their habitat has generated the strengthening of the tourism industry in the world. With that in mind, it's of paramount importance to realize that the tourism sector can be a tool that will produce collective profits provide that it's accomplishe in a sustainable way. As an example of a touristic site in which the relationship between the use and occupation have not become sustainable just like Praia de Iracema in Fortaleza. One can perceive that since the foundation of this area, the object evidenced two cycles of life, one in which it was valued and an other at times being degrading and at other times both processes taking place simultaneously, being static nowadays. Considering the social relevance of the object, this present work aims at understanding which factors contributed to the static state of a coastal touristic site. In order for that to happen, it was necessary the historical analysis of the phases experienced in that neighborhood through newspapers, magazines and photos sources, having bibliography related to the theme as supplement. ▼ The Brezhnev era (1964-1982) was also the era of television. The First Channel of Moscow's Central Television Studio began to reach all eleven Soviet time zones in the same years, 1965-1970, that marked the beginning of a new political era, the period of decline, corruption, and cynicism, but also stability, relative prosperity, and vibrant popular culture, that came to be called, retrospectively, the “era of stagnation.” Nearly all of the iconic images and sounds of this period were mediated by television: Brezhnev's slurred speech and corpselike appearance, the singing of Iosif Kobzon and Alla Pugacheva, the parades and funerals on Red Square, and Olympic figure skating, to name just a few. Quotations and jokes drawn from specific TV movies and shows are ubiquitous in post-Soviet memoirs and the press. Most strikingly, several of the most important programs created during the 1960s and 1970s are still a prominent part of current Russian television. This dissertation analyzes the political and ideological dilemmas of the Brezhnev era through the lens of television, the medium with which that era is so closely associated. Seen from the perspective of its most famous television programs and their producers, Brezhnev-era cultural life appears far more fluid, experimental, and innovative than the binary categories of “official” and “unofficial” culture suggest, helping to explain the powerful nostalgia for precisely the “official” mass culture of this period in Russia today. Two changes in post-Stalin Soviet politics combined to encourage this experimentation. The first was the growing importance, after Stalin's death, of persuasion, rather than coercion, in mobilizing the Soviet population, as well as the eagerness of a reinvigorated intelligentsia to participate in revitalizing the socialist project during the 1960s. The second key factor was intense pressure from Cold War competition with the West. In order to respond to foreign radio broadcasting and offer an appealing Soviet alternative to the Western popular culture that was penetrating Soviet borders, the Communist Party leadership encouraged Central Television's staff to seek new styles and genres of television broadcasting. Far from being ritualized or formalized, therefore, some of the most popular and politically important programs on Central Television during the Brezhnev era were the site of significant cultural and political play. This experimentation began in the late 1950s, but it continued and in fact went further after 1968. At the height of the era of “stagnation,” a key group of television programs were involved in a search for new ways of engaging and uniting the Soviet population in an unfamiliar ideological environment: one in which the universality of enthusiasm and participation in a common mission were no longer assumed, and that was focused primarily on the present, not the future.

▼ While the understanding of the small business sector in general is important to devise strategies for growth of the sector in South Africa, the evidence about the funeral parlour industry is particularly scarce. The aim of this study was to explore and examine factors that affect the growth of small emerging funeral parlours in South Africa. This was a qualitative study using an interpretive approach. Individual and focus group discussions were key in providing rich information. The sample group included directors or owners of small to medium funeral businesses from four selected provinces in South Africa. The findings from this study have shown a number of internal and external factors that contribute to the growth stagnation of small emerging funeral parlours in South Africa. The internal factors included limited or lack of managerial, marketing and financial skills. In addition, lack of financial support makes it difficult for small emerging funeral businesses to grow. Mistrust of small emerging funeral parlours by the communities was also among the contributing factors to the growth stagnation of small funeral businesses. With respect to external factors, it was evident that government does not recognise funeral parlours the same as any other small business, thus making it difficult for small funeral businesses to benefit from any assistance from the government. In line with the above findings, there is a need for small emerging funeral parlours to reflect on ways through which skills in management and financial and marketing skills can be acquired. In addition, the quest to build credibility in communities where these funeral parlours operate is of paramount importance if these businesses are to succeed. Furthermore, it is important that more workshops be carried out in order to equip funeral parlours owners with a deeper knowledge of the regulations that govern small businesses and funeral businesses in particular. While it appears to be a challenge for small businesses to register due to the higher costs involved, it is important for funeral parlour associations together with the government structure concerned to find way through which this challenge can be resolved. There is also a need for government structures to come up with a clear legislative framework that can assist small emerging funeral parlours in South Africa. This dissertation examines two issues pertaining to economic growth and development in the long run. Chapter 1 contributes to the understanding of the Neolithic transition, a milestone in early economic development, by investigating the role of species diversity in the adoption and diffusion of agriculture. Using high resolution geo-referenced data on the distribution of terrestrial animal species around the world, we show that in a global sample of preindustrial societies from the Ethnographic Atlas, there is a robust inverted-U relationship between species richness and reliance on agriculture for subsistence. Our tentative exploration of the mechanism behind this relationship points to the important role of sedentism as a mediating link. Furthermore, we show that a similar inverted-U association holds between species diversity and the timing of agricultural transition across Neolithic sites in Europe and the Near East. The non-monotonic relationship revealed in our study suggests that competing theories connecting the abundance and diversity of food sources in a local environment to the expansion of diet breadth among foragers (known as the broad spectrum revolution) and the eventual transition to agriculture are complementary rather than mutually exclusive.Chapter 2 examines the so-called "middle-income trap," a tendency to experience prolonged economic stagnation said to exist among the countries with middle-income status, by proposing a new approach to detect the presence and mechanism of the trap. Based on the results of a structural break test on 173 economies' growth rate series during the 1951-2014 period, I show that economies in the 40-80 percentiles of the cross-country real GDP per capita distribution face both increasing risks of experiencing growth slowdowns and diminishing chances of experiencing growth accelerations as they transit to a higher per capita income level. Given that this relative income range falls in the middle part of the global cross-country income distribution, the observed unfavorable evolution of break probabilities can be interpreted as indicating the presence of a middle-income trap. However, the study also finds that the prominence of the trap observed in data disappears once some confounding factors are controlled for in the multinomial probit regressions, including lagged growth rates, human capital, the share of service value added in GDP, and quality of democratic institutions. This points to the possibility that it is the combination of these factors, rather than relative per capita income level per se, that are giving rise to stagnation among middle-income countries. Although the regression results in this study should be treated with caution due to the likely endogeneity of these control, this finding is still indicative of the need for reorientation of the way we think about the "trap."

▼ Investigations were carried out to assess biofilm formation within a model warm water distribution system (test rig) under a variety of conditions. Analysis methods included ATP-/ culture-based analysis, SEM and confocal microscopy. Molecular-based community analysis was carried out using PCR/DGGE. High pH (9.53-10.08), induced by the presence of a sacrificial anode within the water heater, had a profound inhibitive effect on the culturability of biofilm bacteria on copper (Cu) pipe within the test rig. Concurrent investigations into the effect of stagnation (varied periods of non-flushing) appeared to contradict the widely held view that stagnation is conducive to biofilm formation, with greater flushing frequencies resulting in increased biofilm. It was concluded that a higher frequency of nutrient-delivering events were largely responsible for this and that in systems where lengthier stagnation periods were employed, factors such as low oxygen and reduced nutrient levels inhibited biofilm formation on previously uncontaminated Cu pipe. Thermal purging (TP) over a 28 day period of 30 second, 12 hourly flushing at 41 °C and three-daily one minute purging with 70 °C water resulted in a 99% reduction in the culturability of biofilm bacteria on both Cu and LLDPE. However, confocal microscopical analysis of bacterial numbers indicated that 25.06% (Cu) and 21.55% (LLDPE) of the initial bacterial population remained viable. A large proportion of non-viable biofilm bacteria were also observed. Further work is therefore required in order to optimize TP within the test rig. Biofilm formation on a range of different materials; Cu, stainless steel, PEX, and EPDM, showed significantly greater biofilm development on EPDM in comparison to the other materials. Preliminary investigations of LLDPE and tap outlet fittings showed that laminar flow outlet fittings may act as reservoirs for the development and subsequent dissemination of biofilm. Molecular bacterial community structural studies of test rig biofilms clearly showed that biofilm community composition was significantly affected by both temporal and environmental factors, and varied at points within the same system. Sequencing did not provide a great insight into the composition of the bacterial communities within the test rig, and further work is required to gain a more complete picture of bacterial community diversity within the test rig. These studies show that biofilm formation within the test rig is greatly influenced by a wide variety of factors. The test rig’s unique design necessitates a cautionary approach when making comparisons with, for example, larger water distribution systems

District heat is currently more exposed for competition than it has been for several years. Since the mid-1980s, district heat has dominated the heat market, but is now in a tougher competitive situation due to the increasing popularity of heat pumps. This, in combination with energy efficiency, has led to a stagnation of delivered energy. The purpose of the study is to investigate the district heating's current competitive situation in Västerås. This will be investigated based on pricing, performance and paragraphs. In order to get a comprehensive picture of the heat market and to find out what factors customers prioritize, housing companies, house makers and villa owners were interviewed. The study's results show that house owners prioritize delivery reliability, followed by economy and environment in the choice of heating method. Actors' views on pricing were different depending on the preferred heating method, where the different views were primarily about the operating and maintenance costs of heat pumps. In order to analyze pricing the life cycle cost was calculated on the basis of real cases. This was done by creating a calculation model in Excel. The result of pricing shows that district heating was the best option for all cases. However, from a new construction perspective, geothermal heat pump for small houses had similar life cycle cost as district heating, while district heating was superior in price for the larger houses. All cases when a customer had change from district heat to heat pumps were unprofitable due to the switching cost that arises. Performance was evaluated by the environmental impact and delivery reliability of the methods. The consequential life cycle assessment was used when calculating environmental impact. The result showed that the district heating in Västerås has a positive environmental impact because of the social benefits it provides. Heat pumps had a negative impact on the environment in all cases. The delivery reliability was studied through actors' views in combination with scientific research, which resulted in the view that district heating is better. The evaluation of paragraph was limited to Boverket’s building regulations. The competitive situation is currently skewed, where heat pumps have a big advantage as houses can limit their energy efficiency with heat pumps. The future of district heating in Västerås is bright. The challenge is to keep their market domination by maintaining a competitive price as the heat market is facing changes with reduced heat demand and tougher competition.

▼ This dissertation consists of two parts. The unifying scheme is to advance our understanding of the nature of financial markets, in particular their macroeconomic implications. In the first essay, I focus on the microstructure of the financial market. In particular, I study how investors' information choices interact over time, and how does this dynamic aspect change the nature of information acquisition in financial markets? In an infinite-horizon framework in which a stock's dividend has a persistent component (stock fundamental), and overlapping generations of investors choose whether to acquire costly information about this time-varying component, I illustrate that information is like bubble in that its value is forward-looking: current investors have more incentives to acquire information if more investors get informed in the future, as the future resale stock price becomes more sensitive to the fundamental. This dynamic complementarity in information acquisition leads to multiple stationary rational-expectation equilibria, despite presence of the classic static substitutability force as in Grossman and Stiglitz (1980). The dynamic complementarity in information acquisition can be most prominent with intermediate persistence of stock fundamental, or when the public signal is imprecise. The second essay develops and quantifies a financial theory to account for the macroeconomic phenomenon that the recovery from the Great Recession was much slower than recoveries from other postwar recessions . I propose a standard neoclassical model enriched with a land sector. Land can be used either as a consumption good for the household or as collateral for the firm to finance working capital. The model exhibits two locally stable steady states: one with high capital and high land price, and the other with low capital and low land price. The multiplicity of steady states allows for asymmetric responses to small and large shocks. Large adverse shocks have a much more persistent impact, as they trigger transitions from one steady state to the other. A calibrated version of the model displays significantly delayed recovery upon large adverse shocks and is consistent with various features of the Great Recession and its aftermath.

Italy’s economic crisis – arguably – poses the greatest challenge to the future of European economic and monetary integration, not just because of the relative size of the Italian economy or because Italy has been a founding member of the European Union and its forerunner. A more important reason is the country’s pre-crisis economic stagnation which had started long before the 2008 Global Financial Crisis and which had put Italy in a relatively disadvantageous position when the crisis happened. To investigate this secular stagnation of economic growth in the Italian case, this study looks into potential output growth as determined by the growth in Total Factor Productivity, or TFP growth. This report first scrutinizes the concept of TFP growth and shows that it can be defined in three ways: (i) as a “residual”, following Solow’s work; (ii) as weighted average factor productivity growth; and (iii) and as weighted average factor payment growth. We utilize “shift-share” analysis to dissemble labor productivity growth into two components: “within-“ and “between-sector” labor productivity growth. Last, we construct economic model of secular stagnation of TFP growth in the Italian economy. We use all three definitions and show that that aggregate Italian TFP growth has been stagnating since the country’s peak growth in 1973. Our findings show that Italian economy has been suffering predominantly by the secular stagnation in its within-sector labor productivity. By analyzing the evidence on the country’s long-run real wage between dynamic and stagnant sectors, we find that real wage growth rates have been declining across the board as well. Thus, we find no support for Italy of the “cost disease” that Baumol predicted, i.e. the rise in the relative price of the services, the sector that is stagnant in terms of productivity growth. Using 2SLS regression analysis, our economic model shows that real wage growth and final demand growth can partly define the phenomenon of secular stagnation of TFP growth in the Italian economy.

▼ Blood stasis in the cardiac chambers is a recognized risk factor for intracardiac thrombosis and potential cardiogenic embolic events. In patients at risk of intraventricular thrombosis, the benefits of anticoagulation therapy must be balanced with its pro-hemorrhagic effects. In the healthy heart, instead, left ventricular (LV) flow patterns have been proposed to optimize blood transport by coupling diastole and systole.This work introduces a novel flow image-based method to assess LV blood stasis and transport by processing flow-velocity images obtained by 2D color-Doppler velocimetry or phase-contrast magnetic resonance. This approach is based on quantifying the LV blood Residence Time (TR) from time-resolved blood velocity fields by solving the advection equation for a passive scalar. This equation can be derived from statistical mechanics and the process can be further generalized to higher order moments of the time distribution to find, for example, the TR standard deviation.We showed proof-of-concept feasibility of the method in normal hearts, patients with dilated cardiomyopathy and patients before and after the implantation of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD). We then conducted two clinical studies on two populations of patients: with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and undergoing cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT).In patients with AMI we identified the biomechanical determinants of stasis and addressed the technique’s potential to predict LV thrombosis. TR was longer in the early than in the late phases of AMI and longer in AMI than in controls. The largest stagnant regions were identified in acute stage of the AMI and stasis metrics performed well to predict LV thrombosis.To track blood transport in the LV of patients undergoing CRT we used a modified analysis with time-varying inflow boundary conditions. The device programming was varied to analyze flow transport under different atrioventricular conduction delays, and to model tachycardia. The analysis showed how CRT influences the transit of blood, contributes to conserving kinetic energy, and favors the generation of hemodynamic forces that accelerate blood in the direction of the LV outflow tract. This work paves the way for using TR-derived measures of bloos stasis as a relevant bio-marker in the clinical setting.

A economia conduzida apenas pelas forças de mercado gera falhas de mercado significativas. Essas falhas de mercado perpetuam-se gerando efeitos regressivos sobre a economia, destacando-se entre estes a estagnação econômica e a elevação dos indicadores de pobreza e da desigualdade de renda, através de um processo de causação circular acumulativo em descensão, cuja interrupção acontece com intervenções governamentais adequadas que promovam um combate contínuo e sustentável à pobreza, estímulos à geração de emprego e maior integração nacional, reduzindo as desigualdades sociais e regionais. Foi feita então uma análise dos últimos 26 anos da economia brasileira, com ênfase na dinâmica entre as diversas políticas econômicas, os efeitos regressivos, as forças de mercado, crescimento econômico, desigualdade de renda e indicadores de pobreza (número de pessoas em domicílios pobres, número de pessoas em domicílios indigentes, percentual de pobres da população, percentual de indigentes da população, participação da renda dos 10 % mais ricos sobre a renda nacional, a participação dos 20 % mais pobres sobre a renda ) sob a teoria de Myrdal. Verificou-se a estagnação econômica em todo o período analisado, elevação da desigualdade de renda e dos indicadores de pobreza nos anos 80, pequena redução destes últimos na década de 90 e no período de 2000 a 2006, com a ressalva de que houve certa estabilização do percentual de pessoas que habitam domicílios pobres e do percentual das que moram em domicílios indigentes.

market failures become eternal causing regressive effects over the economy, pointing out among these the economic stagnation and the increasing of povertys indicators and of the income inequality, through a process of accumulating circling causation in downward, which interruption happens with appropriated governmental interventions that promote a continuous and sustainable combat against poverty, incentives to the generation of employment and greater national integration, reducing the social and regional inequalities. It was done an analysis of the last 26 years of the Brazilian economy, focusing on the dynamic between the various economic policies, the regressive effects, the market forces, economic growth, income inequality and povertys indicators (number of people in poor domiciles, number of people in indigent domiciles, percentage of poor people of population, percentage of indigent people of the population, participation of the income of the 10 % richer over the national income and the participation of the income of the 20 % poorer over the national income) under Myrdals theory. It was verified the economic stagnation over the whole period analyzed, elevation of income inequality and of the poverty indicators over the 80s, small reduction of these over the 90s and over the period between 2000 and 2006, with the exception of that occurred certain stabilization of the percentage of the people that live in poor domiciles and of those ones that live in indigent domiciles.

The aim of the following project is to present the appearance and development in the process of the vertical growth of the Centro neighborhood, located at the district Aracaju, in Sergipes state, which started in the 50s and ended in the 90s, when the tendency for the constructions of buildings with a greater number of floors was present at other regions of the city. At the attempt of being in evidence at the national scenery as a developed city, the municipal Public Power invests in the construction of great buildings to house service, commerce and institutional organizations, gradually modifying the site of that region, which changes according to the political, economical and cultural situation seen along the years and at the pace that laws, enactments and codes are implanted at the city. These initiatives to give direction to constructions avoiding having them made with no pattern and the national conjecture caused distinct characteristics at specific buildings at the history of this process, easily identified when the edifications that would emerge under the light of the happenings of these four decades and, consequently, under the action of the urban site projectors. Buildings with the investment of the Public Power and the private initiative, tendencies of the constructions at certain areas and the number of approved projects during this interval of 50 years, marked the regional panorama and made clear the distinction among three moments of the presented urban evolution - 1951 to 1974, when the majority of the constructions were sponsored by the Public Power; 1975 to 1986, when the reproduction of the real state budget takes this scenery through the large number of constructions made by the privet initiative; and at last, from 1987 to 1991, when the process of vertical growth decreases and stagnates at the area studied in this project. The higher value of other regions apart from the Centro provokes modifications at the urban space of Aracaju. Glamour, abundance, development, prosperity, emptiness e decadence, marked this period, provoking social, political and economical questionings that would reflect at the hole Sergipanas capital.

O presente trabalho visa apresentar o surgimento e o desenvolvimento do processo de Verticalização do bairro Centro, localizado no município de Aracaju, estado de Sergipe, que teve início na década de 50 e fim nos anos 90, quando a tendência para construções de edifícios com maior número de pavimentos tomava outras regiões da cidade. Na tentativa de aparecer no cenário nacional como cidade desenvolvida, o poder público municipal investe na construção de prédios de grande porte para abrigar serviço, comércio e órgãos institucionais, modificando gradativamente a paisagem dessa região, que muda de acordo com situações políticas, econômicas e culturais que se apresentariam ao longo dos anos, e à medida que leis, decretos e códigos são implantados na cidade. Tais iniciativas de se poder dar diretrizes para que construções não fossem executadas de forma aleatória e a conjuntura…
