L'objectif de la caractérisation des tissus par ultrasons ou ‘Quantitative Ultrasound (QUS)’ est de différencier les tissus pathologiques en associant les paramètres d’un modèle aux caractéristiques physiques du tissu. L'usage exclusif des ultrasons pour obtenir un diagnostic peut garantir que le patient ne subira pas une procédure invasive (e.g. une biopsie), utilisant des rayonnements ionisants (e.g. la tomographie) ou même inconfortable et coûteuse (e.g. IRM). Les méthodes de QUS extraient des informations sur la microstructure du tissu à partir du contenu spectral ou temporel des signaux ultrasonores. Le signal temporel radiofréquence (RF) et son enveloppe sont d'intérêt à cause du speckle crée par l’interférence des ondes, qui peut être modélisé par des distributions statistiques. Ce travail propose d'explorer la possibilité d'obtenir des estimations QUS fiables en utilisant des distributions statistiques comme modèles pour le speckle ultrasonore. Les estimations sont constituées des paramètres des distributions respectives et dépendent de la densité de diffuseurs dans le milieu. L’évaluation s’effectue sur des images simulées, des fantômes de particules et des biofantômes. Dans la première partie, la distribution Gaussienne Généralisée est utilisée pour modéliser le signal RF, et la distribution de Nakagami est utilisée pour modéliser son enveloppe. Les deux distributions sont limitées à discriminer les milieux avec une faible densité de diffuseurs, parce que les valeurs de leurs paramètres de forme saturent pour un speckle pleinement développé. Par conséquent, puisque la formation du speckle pleinement développé dépend de la résolution du système d'imagerie, la caractérisation peut se faire seulement à de très hautes résolutions, correspondant à des hautes fréquences qui ne sont pas communes en échographie clinique. Une application du modèle de Nakagami sur l’image crée par la seconde harmonique montre le potentiel du paramètre de forme de Nakagami en tant que mesure de la nonlinéarité du milieu. Dans la deuxième partie, l'enveloppe a été modélisée en utilisant la distribution K-Homodyne. Le paramètre de regroupement des diffuseurs α permet de discriminer entre les milieux denses jusqu’à une limite supérieure à celle du paramètre de Nakagami. Pourtant, cette limite est difficile à estimer avec précision, parce que les valeurs caractéristiques pour le speckle pleinement développé sont affectées par un biais et une variance élevés. Le biais et la variance peuvent être améliorés en augmentant la quantité de données utilisée pour l’estimation. Dans la dernière partie, une technique de déconvolution spécialement conçue pour la caractérisation des tissus a été évaluée. Des essais exhaustifs ont montré qu’elle n’est pas suffisamment robuste pour une application clinique, puisque les images déconvoluées ne sont pas fidèles à la réflectivité originale du milieu

▼ A digital speckle-pattern interferometer was built utilizing a 100 x 100 element Reticon diode array interfaced to an HP-9836C desk-top computer. A single-mode optical fiber mounted in the center of the system's aperture stop creates a spherical-wave reference beam. Secondary interference fringes are calculated inside the computer by subtracting speckle patterns before and after a deformation, and squaring this difference. This technique has been shown superior to that of taking the absolute value of the difference. The traditional vibrational observation technique of low-pass filtering a single speckle pattern and squaring the result is emulated in software. It is compared to four other vibration observation techniques. A new technique records the self-interference terms in a reference frame, and subtracts these from the time-averaged vibration data. It provides very good fringe contrast for moderately unstable objects, as well as interferometers which have not been optimized to minimize self-interference terms. The best vibration fringe contrast is obtained by subtracting two time-averaged speckle patterns of a single object resonance. One exposure has a relative π phase-shift between object and reference beams to cancel self-interference terms. This last technique is not real-time; whereas, the new technique is. Double-exposure speckle interferograms are averaged using a technique which utilizes a stepping motor to change the object illumination angle. Results of averaging deformation measurements and double-exposure vibration techniques show a large increase in fringe contrast with an accompanying reduction in speckle noise. Quantitative measurements of object deformations is demonstrated by applying phase-shifting interferometry techniques. A deformation's phase is found by subtracting modulo 2π phases measured for each object state. Phase discontinuities are removed with the aid of noise reduction algorithms. Limitations are low intensity modulation as the phase is shifted, and speckle decorrelation during object deformation. It is shown that 10 waves of object deformation are measurable to λ/10 across the detector array. The double-exposure phase-measurement technique works well and is applicable to many different metrological measurements. To show the versatility of this technique, an optically smooth surface is contoured using two illumination wavelengths. O presente trabalho abordou o sistema de Tomografia por Coerência Óptica (OCT) e sua aplicação à área de microfluídica. Para tanto, foram realizados testes de caracterização física de circuitos microfluídicos, utilizando modelos 3D (tridimensionais) construídos a partir de imagens de OCT destes circuitos. A técnica foi, assim, avaliada como potencial ferramenta de auxílio na aferição de microcanais. Indo além, este trabalho estuda e desenvolve técnicas de análise para fluxos microfluídicos, em especial técnicas baseadas no padrão de speckle. Em primeiro momento, métodos já existentes foram estudados e aprimorados, como o Speckle Variance OCT, em que foi obtido um ganho de 31% em tempo de processamento. Outros métodos, como o LASCA (Laser speckle Contrast Analysis), baseados na autocorrelação de speckle, são adaptados às imagens de OCT. Derivado do LASCA, o método de análise desenvolvido baseado na autocorrelação de intensidade motivou o desenvolvimento de um arranjo de OCT próprio e software de aquisição customizado, com taxa de amostragem da ordem de 8 kHz. O método proposto foi, então, capaz de distinguir fluxos volumétricos variados, e seus limites de detecção foram testados, comprovando sua viabilidade de aplicação para análise de movimento browniano e fluxos volumétricos abaixo de 10 μl/min.

This work discusses the Optical Coherence Tomography system (OCT) and its application to the microfluidics area. To this end, physical characterization of microfluidic circuits were performed using 3D (three-dimensional) models constructed from OCT images of such circuits. The technique was thus evaluated as a potential tool to aid in the inspection of microchannels. Going further, this workpaper studies and develops analytical techniques for microfluidic flow, in particular techniques based on speckle pattern. In the first instance, existing methods were studied and improved, such as Speckle Variance - OCT, where a gain of 31% was obtained in processing time. Other methods, such as LASCA (Laser Speckle Contrast Analysis), based on speckle autocorrelation, are adapted to OCT images. Derived from LASCA, the developed analysis technique based on intensity autocorrelation motivated the development of a custom OCT system as well as an optimized acquisition software, with a sampling rate of 8 kHz. The proposed method was, then, able to distinguish different flow rates, and limits of detection were tested, proving its feasibility for implementation on Brownian motion analysis and flow rates below 10 μl/min.

▼ Abstract: The laser biospeckle is an optical interferometric phenomena that occurs when an incident light insides on an active biological material surface. The material activity can be originated from biological processes or even from some isolated physical phenomena. It does exist a group of components in a biological material which can change the biospeckle interference pattern. Many images processing techniques have been employed to quantify the activity level of a biological material and to correlate it with quality patterns. However, the techniques employed at this time for to quantify activity level and to evaluate seed quality, can not be employed to identify the components with acceptable accuracy. However, the identification and differentiation of these components is of fundamental importance to technique development applicable to a variety of situations as seed viability analysis, seed vigor, generating quick and non destructive, as well as capable of automation methods. Physical damages occurring by impact during product handling, insect attack and others do generate zones of low biological activities. By other side, seeds can exhibited zones attacked by fungi and other microorganisms holding high biological activities. Theoretical considerations support the possibility of identifying as well as mapping the phenomena originated from biological activities in seeds by inserting Wavelets Transform (TW) and Frequency Analysis in the image processing. Based on what it has been exposed before, the objectives of this research work can be summarized as to verify the potentiality of the Wavelets Transform (TW) applied to the laser biospeckle signal in indentifying and mapping phenomena associated to activities in seeds of Phaseolus vulgaris, L. The experimental setup included a monochromatic camera, a digital camera, a 632 red and 10 mW powered HeNe laser and a diode 632 nm and 5 mW powered. A tetrazolium (TZ) test was employed as a pattern test. The above described procedure generated digital maps of activity which were compared with the TZ. Results showed that the technique are able of identifying natural and mechanical bruising beans seeds. Artificialy generated thermal and chemical damages were identified as well. BACKGROUND: Two-dimensional speckle tracking provides valuable information for regional wall motion abnormalities. The purpose of this study was to determine the diagnostic value of left ventricular longitudinal strain and torsion to diagnose coronary artery disease during dobutamine stress echocardiography.METHODS: We studied 100 patients (mean age 60.8 ± 10.7 years, 72 male) with known or suspected coronary artery disease, excluding those with prior history of transmural infraction. All of them underwent dobutamine stress echo and coronary angiography within one month. Wall-motion score index, left ventricular global longitudinal strain and torsion were measured at rest and peak stress. Additionally, the respective differences between rest and stress were also calculated. Optimal cut-offs were derived from receiver operating characteristic curves for strain and torsion values.RESULTS: Mean left ventricular ejection fraction was 55 ± 5.4 %. Coronary angiography revealed significant lesions in 67 patients. Values regarding sensitivity, and specificity for wall motion score index difference were 78 % and 88 % respectively (area under curve 0.84). Global longitudinal strain difference (median 0.5 %) illustrated 81 % sensitivity and 72 % specificity for disease detection (area under curve 0.80, cut-off value ≤0 %). The respective values for torsion difference (median 4.7°) were 81 % and 82 % (area under curve 0.76, cut-off value ≤6.5°). Combination of wall motion score index difference and torsion difference for disease detection showed 91 % sensitivity and 79 % specificity (area under curve 0.85).CONCLUSIONS: The implementation of speckle tracking during dobutamine stress echo could serve as an adjunct method for coronary artery disease assessment, providing quantitative diagnostic information.

Εισαγωγή: Η τεχνική του δισδιάστατου (2-D) speckle tracking προσφέρει πολύτιμες πληροφορίες για τη διάγνωση τμηματικών διαταραχών κινητικότητας του τοιχώματος της αριστερής κοιλίας. Ο σκοπός της παρούσας μελέτης ήταν η εκτίμηση της διαγνωστικής αξίας της επιμήκους παραμόρφωσης (strain) και της συστροφής (torsion) της αριστερής κοιλίας, για τη διάγνωση της στεφανιαίας νόσου, κατά τη διάρκεια της δυναμικής υπερηχογραφίας με δοβουταμίνη. Μέθοδοι: Μελετήσαμε 100 ασθενείς (μέσης ηλικίας 60,8 ± 10,7 έτη, 72 άντρες) με γνωστή ή πιθανή στεφανιαία νόσο, αποκλείοντας εκείνους με ιστορικό προηγούμενου διατοιχωματικού εμφράγματος του μυοκαρδίου. Όλοι υποβλήθηκαν σε δυναμική υπερηχογραφία με δοβουταμίνη και στεφανιαιογραφία μέσα σε ένα μήνα. ▼ Quantum imaging is a recent and promising branch of quantum optics that exploits the quantum nature of light. Improving the limitations imposed by classical sources of light in optical imaging techniques or overcoming the classical boundaries of image formation is one of the key motivations in quantum imaging. In this thesis, I describe certain aspects of both quantum and thermal ghost imaging and I also study image discrimination with high fidelity at low light levels. First of all, I present a theoretical and experimental study of entangled-photon compressive ghost imaging. In quantum ghost imaging using entangled photon pairs, the brightness of readily available sources is rather weak. The usual technique of image acquisition in this imaging modality is to raster scan a single-pixel single-photon sensitive detector in one arm of a ghost imaging setup. In most imaging modalities, the number of measurements required to fully resolve an object is dependent on the measurement’s Nyquist limit. In the first part of the thesis, I propose a ghost imaging (GI) configuration that uses bucket detectors (as opposed to a raster scanning detector) in both arms of the GI setup. High resolution image reconstruction using only 27% of the measurement’s Nyquist limit using compressed sensing algorithms are presented. The second part of my thesis deals with thermal ghost imaging. Unlike in quantum GI, bright and spatially correlated classical sources of radiation are used in thermal GI. Usually high-contrast speckle patterns are used as sources of the correlated beams of radiation. I study the effect of the field statistics of the illuminating source on the quality of ghost images. I show theoretically and experimentally that a thermal GI setup can produce high quality images even when low-contrast (intensity-averaged) speckle patterns are used as an illuminating source, as long as the collected signal is mainly caused by the random fluctuation of the incident speckle field, as opposed to other noise sources. In addition, I describe transverse image discrimination and recognition using holographic matched filtering techniques using heralded single photons from a spontaneous parametric downconversion source. Heralded single photons are used for encoding and discriminating images from our predefined orthogonal basis set. Our basis set constitutes two locally spatially orthogonal objects. We show that if the object is a member of a predefined set, we can discriminate the objects in the set with high confidence levels.

Su portabilidad, fácil uso y bajo costo lo hacen una herramienta idónea para el pre diagnostico conducido por médicos generales, dando solución al problema de congestión de la red de salud pública al evitar derivar casos innecesarios a otros centros de atención de mayor complejidad y dando un mayor acceso a este tipo de exámenes en zonas donde su acceso es restringido. Como producto en desarrollo, aún enfrenta diversos desafíos que deben resolverse, entre ellos, el tratamiento de imágenes para su realce. Los dispositivos de ultrasonido son afectos a un fenómeno particular llamado speckle, generado por la interferencia de la señal exploradora con los elementos pequeños en las superficies examinadas, lo que se traduce en artefactos granulares, zonas de alta y baja intensidad que dificultan el diagnóstico médico y automatizado. El objetivo principal de este trabajo consiste en diseñar e implementar distintas técnicas de procesamiento considerando las restricciones que impone Taote, tal que permitan realzar las imágenes de ultrasonido que provienen de él. Para ello, se estudian algunas técnicas existentes en el estado del arte , se simulan y evalúan para su posterior implementación. Al respecto, el operador lineal con ganancia adaptable de Lee y el operador no lineal de mediana multicapa, entregan los mejores desempeños seguidos por los operadores fundamentales (promedio y mediana convencional) para los índices de transformación de imágenes. Éstos entregan una métrica de la calidad de la transformación y no de la calidad de la imagen por sí misma (la cual es subjetiva y depende del observador) . Debido a la complejidad computacional, se diseñan circuitos que implementan estos operadores con ganancia fija, es decir, representándolos como la interpolación constante de operadores fundamentales en Verilog, para su posterior síntesis e implementación en la FPGA del equipo. En su implementación en el equipo, las capturas de las nuevas imágenes procesadas demuestran transformaciones similares a las obtenidas en las simulaciones, aunque con métricas de transformación diferente. Aún así , éstas logran validar las transformaciones en la imagen original de Taote. Finalmente, estas capturas fueron sometidas a la evaluación del ojo experto, donde el operador no lineal con ventana de tamaño 5 X 5 fue la elegida para ser incorporada en el proyecto. ▼ This thesis work provides a new way to detect and track the displacement of flexor tendons within the human arm, using a non-invasive, ultrasound-based, speckle tracking technique. By tracking the tendons in the arm, it provides a way to monitor a person’s intention to move their hands and fingers. This has application to hand prosthetic control, as well as tendon injury assessment, which has significant contributions to the medical and rehabilitation community. The system works by capturing and processing a sequence of B-scan ultrasound images, to detect and track the flexor tendon motion (excursion) in the wrist, as the user flexes their muscles. Given the biomechanics of the hand, tendon displacement is correlated to the user’s intention to move their finger. Several speckle tracking techniques using B-scan ultrasound image sequences are developed in this work, including: auto-location of the tendon, a stationary ROI (region of interest), and novel use of similarity measures such as FT (Fisher Tippett), and hybrid methods. As well, work is done to investigate various speckle tracking parameters, and their effects on tracking accuracy. The different speckle tracking techniques are developed using data obtained from cadaver hands, and human volunteers undergoing regular surgery. The tracking techniques are compared in terms of successfully detecting the tendon, accurately tracking tendon displacement, successfully tracking multiple tendons, successfully detecting and tracking the onset of low tendon displacement, and computational efficiency of the algorithms. Another major aspect of this work is the design of a novel quad-array transducer that can collect image sequences from up to four tendons simultaneously. This transducer is instrumental to the motivation for controlling an advanced prosthesis. As well, specialized hardware is designed for the cadaver-based studies. Overall, this thesis successfully demonstrated the proposed tracking algorithms and newly designed hardware, for tracking the displacement of single and multiple flexor tendons. ▼ Two novel multimodal optical imaging systems, both providing concurrent full-field blood flow and oxygenation/volume mapping, were developed to investigate epilepsy-related disease models: 1) An epifluorescence microscope-integrated system, permitting simultaneous intracellular calcium imaging and electrographic recording of brain activity and 2) a miniaturized head-mounted system (collaborative work), permitting brain imaging of freely-behaving rats. The microscope-integrated system investigated microvascular dynamics during seizure, revealing large arteriole dilation associated with seizure onset. Furthermore, the electrographically correlated neurovascular seizure responses, intracellular calcium dynamics, and inter-seizure consistency were found to be modified after anti-seizure drug administration. The miniaturized system investigated an absence seizure model, revealing a previously under-characterized biphasic neurovascular response to motor arrest at seizure onset. Blood flow was measured using laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI), permitting high spatiotemporal resolution flowmetry. While all the imaging modalities employed have a high dynamic range, LSCI-derived image sequences have rapidly varying high spatial frequency distortions. These distortions significantly reduce the reliability of misfocus correction and image registration approaches, which are required for brain-motion insensitive signal amplification. Novel speckle noise insensitive parameters were developed for sub-depth of field active LSCI misfocus correction and high precision LSCI image registration, permitting flowmetry stabilization. An adaptive cardiographic synchronization scheme enabled precise cardiac cycle-driven blood flow trace characterization and greater flowmetry stabilization than previously reported. The LSCI image registration approach exploited high precision vessel edge detection filters which are stable in the presence of a spatial sparsity enforcement scheme that preserves temporal flow dynamics. Consequently, these filters provide a data decompression mechanism that permits the measurement of arteriole diameter changes and blood flow dynamics at/below 1.0±0.5% and 0.10±0.05% data retention, respectively. Concurrent compression of oxygenation and calcium imaging data is feasible for most applications given their lower spatiotemporal contrast. Ongoing research is presented supporting the suitability of photoacoustic imaging for whole-brain myelin mapping, demyelination assessment, and hypoxia-ischemia tracking. Cardiographic synchronization permitted deep cerebral artery visualization with improved artery occlusion sensitivity. The several proof-of-principle innovations presented will enable expanded multimodal imaging studies of disease processes, progression and treatment effects in freely-behaving animals with improved flowmetry stability and data transmission efficiency. ▼ The interior structures of small planetary bodies such as asteroids and comets are an enigma, yet understanding them has immense value. Knowing the internal structure is important for understanding the formation and evolution of the solar system and also has implications for in-situ resource exploitation and planetary defense from asteroids. Despite the immense value, no detailed investigation of the interior properties of an asteroid has yet been made. Although orbital radar and lander based seismological approaches have been proposed to make direct interior observations, it has not yet been demonstrated that radar could transmit through a rocky asteroid, nor that landing multiple seismometers is feasible or affordable. An elegant alternative to landed seismometers is orbital laser Doppler vibrometry, which could record seismic shaking of a small body without contact with the surface. Laser Doppler vibrometers (LDVs) are mature instruments for terrestrial applications; and could function similarly in a space environment. However, when incident on a rough surface like an asteroid regolith, an LDV is subject to laser speckle noise which may be misinterpreted as seismic shaking. I address the challenge of making LDV measurements on naturally rough surfaces by quantifying the laser speckle noise that an orbital LDV would encounter during a hypothetical orbital measurement. Specifically, I simulate an LDV measurement of a seismic signal generated by an impact source on the asteroid 101955 Bennu. I demonstrate that speckle noise can be attenuated by combining multiple signals recorded by an orbital seismometer equipped with multiple LDV sensors. By mitigating laser speckle, I demonstrate that an orbital LDV can record seismic signals on a natural asteroid surface, which would enable an orbital seismometer to achieve the dense global coverage necessary for high resolution interior imaging. Les ballons pressurisés développés par le CNES sont des structures de 8,5 à 12 m de diamètre, qui permettent d’emmener dans la stratosphère des équipements scientifiques pour effectuer des expériences de longue durée. La durée de vie de ces ballons est conditionnée par leur comportement mécanique et notamment le comportement en fluage qui s’il est trop marqué, peut engendrer un changement d’altitude se traduisant alors par une augmentation importante de la contrainte dans la membrane. Il s’est intéressé notamment à l’étude expérimentale et à la modélisation du comportement mécanique en fluage des ballons pressurisés. Plusieurs résultats ont été obtenus permettant de prévoir l’évolution dimensionnelle des ballons suite au phénomène de fluage. En revanche le comportement à la rupture de ces films polymère a été très peu étudié de même que les phénomènes supposés à l’origine de la perte de caractéristiques des films polymères constitutifs des ballons. Les travaux engagés durant cette thèse visent à étudier, quantifier et comprendre les mécanismes d’endommagement amenant la rupture prématurée des ballons. Cet endommagement a deux origines supposées ; d’une part des plis dits simples et triples occasionnés par le stockage, la manipulation et le déploiement des ballons et d’autre part l’endommagement de fluage.

The super-pressure balloons developed by CNES are a great challenge in scientific ballooning. Whatever the balloon type considered (spherical, pumpkin...), it is necessary to have good knowledge of the mechanical behavior of the envelope regarding to the flight level and the lifespan of the balloon. It appears during the working stages of the super pressure balloons that these last can exploded prematurely in the course of the first hours of flight. For this reason CNES and LGP are carrying out research programs about experimentations and modelling in order to predict a good stability of the balloons flight and guarantee a life time in adequacy with the technical requirement. This study deals with multilayered polymeric film damage which induce balloons failure. These experimental and numerical study aims, are a better understanding and predicting of the damage mechanisms bringing the premature explosion of balloons. The following damages phenomena have different origins. The firsts are simple and triple wrinkles owed during the process and the stocking stages of the balloons. The second damage phenomenon is associated to the creep of the polymeric film during the flight of the balloon. ▼ Abstract: The detection and monitoring of fungi, in recent years, have now available computational methods of free analysis, easy implementation, reducing costs and enabling non-destructive processes. This work proposes to analyze the changes obtained in the Biospeckle pattern, which arises when the laser beam is incident on a surface in a dynamic process, and observe the phenomenon of seizure, that is, when such surface demonstrates some biological activity. For this purpose, three activity indexes - Moment of inertia (IM), Differences of Absolute Values (AVD) and Space Time Speckle (STS) - were used for the images generated by different fungi in the first days of their incubation, evolving into the first hours. The results obtained were encouraging for the monitoring of fungi in their first hours after inoculation. From the isolation of the fungi, followed by the peal in Petri dishes, their growth was observed in several stages. In the first stage of the research, it was investigated the growth of fungi during their first week of incubation, the curve of this development showed to be quite coherent with their growth. The Gaussian distribution was then applied, obtaining the correction of this curve. A comparison between the Aspergillus and Penicillium fungi was carried out in the first week after incubation, and the curves corroborated much for the development of the research. The investigation was carried out for the first hours of incubation with the fungus Aspergillus niger, proving the results obtained in the initial tests. The applied indices statistical analysis demonstrated the consistency of the obtained data through its normality curve, proving to be quite profitable as well as demonstrating that this technique proved to be an adequate monitoring tool for the first week of growth for both fungi, 24 hours of development. Food damages due to mechanical impacts at post harvest different phases are one of the biggest issues faced by food industry. In potatoes, productivity decrease due to impacts and physical damages can get to 40% during processing, storage, transportation and commercialization phases. Intern injuries, or bruising, are one of the biggest factors losses at potato production due to mechanical damages. Internal bruising is the surface damage darkening due to impact and it is a result of oxidation reactions associated to metabolic activities of some enzymes. There are techniques to measure and predict if an impact will be capable to generate an intern injury at potatoes, so that they are fundamental to define about adopt preventive control methods that can provide a loss production decrease and consequently product appreciation. The biospeckle laser technique is based in an interference optical phenomenon generated of a coherent light interaction with biological materials or dynamical systems. Digital treatment methods of the interference patterns can identify and quantify different activity levels in a tissue, such as tumors at animal cells or food damages. The biospeckle laser was adopted this work to predict bruising occurrence in non-visual moments of potato surface darkening due to controlled mechanical damages. Interference patterns were collected from an experimental configuration base on back-scattering and processed by numerical and graphical approaches. A pendulum was used as a device to create controlled impacts in potatoes samples. The activities in the regions next to local impacts, in the local damages and s well as in control samples without impacts were analyzed. Scott-Knott test was utilized to analyze data statistical and it was noted that capability of biospeckle laser technique to predict bruising in potato after 2 hours from impact occurrence. Comparison analysis between areas demonstrated the capacity to predict bruising occurrence even at regions out of the impact area. Techniques such as approaches graphical allowed creating maps of activities that unlike numerical approach, did not presented good results.

Injúrias provocadas em alimentos em virtude de impactos mecânicos ocorridos nas etapas da pós-colheita são um dos grandes problemas enfrentados para a indústria alimentícia. Em batatas, as perdas por danos físicos na produção podem chegar até 40% durante as fases de beneficiamento, armazenamento, transporte e comercialização. Injúrias internas, conhecidas como internal bruising, são um dos grandes responsáveis pelas perdas por danos mecânicos na produção de batatas. Estas injúrias internas se caracterizam pelo escurecimento da superfície danificada por um impacto e é proveniente de reações de oxidação associadas à aceleração metabólica de algumas enzimas. Técnicas que permitam mensurar e predizer se um impacto é capaz de gerar uma injúria interna em batatas são fundamentais para o auxílio na tomada de decisão sobre o uso de medidas preventivas do controle que possibilitará uma redução de perdas…

Cette thèse résulte d’une collaboration entre le Pr Ayadi de l’Institut National Polytechnique de Lorraine et le Pr Varna de l’Université Technologique de Luleå. Depuis 2005, le Professeur Varna a développé une méthode originale qui permet d’obtenir l’ensemble des constantes thermoélastiques d’un stratifié endommagé à partir de deux paramètres : l’ouverture moyenne et le glissement moyen des lèvres des fissures, normalisés par rapport à la contrainte appliquée. Dans cette thèse, nous analysons le potentiel de l’interférométrie de speckle pour obtenir la mesure de ces deux grandeurs. Plus généralement, nous montrons l’utilité de la mesure du champ de déplacement pour caractériser le développement de l’endommagement dans les stratifiés. Le premier chapitre décrit l’endommagement qui peut affecter les matériaux composites stratifiés. L’objectif est de mettre en évidence les points particuliers pour lesquels la mesure du champ de déplacement pourrait apporter des informations originales. Dans le deuxième chapitre, le principe de l’interférométrie de speckle est exposé. Nous avons particulièrement insisté sur les raisons qui nous on conduit à choisir cette technique pour réaliser cette étude. Dans le troisième chapitre, nous présentons une étude expérimentale du potentiel de l’interférométrie de speckle pour caractériser les différentes formes d’endommagement qui peuvent apparaître dans un stratifié verre/époxyde . Enfin, dans le dernier chapitre, nous analysons expérimentalement le développement de l’endommagement dans un stratifié carbone/époxyde

This work results from a collaboration between Pr Ayadi (Institut Polytechnique de Lorraine) and Pr Varna (Technical University of Luleå). Since 2005, Pr Varna has developed an original method that allows for the determination of all the thermoelastic constants of a damaged laminate. The stiffness reduction is governed by two parameters: the average value of the opening and the average value of the sliding of the crack surfaces. These values are normalized with respect to the applied loading. In this work, the potential of speckle interferometry is analysed to obtain these two parameters. More generally, we show the usefulness of displacement field measurements to characterize damage development in laminates. The first chapter is dedicated to the damage that occurs in laminates. The main objective is to highlight the points for which displacement field measurements could bring interesting information. In the second chapter, the principle of speckle interferometry is described. The choice of this technique for the considered application is discussed and justified. In the third chapter, an experimental study of the potential of speckle interferometry is proposed to characterize the damage forms that occur in a glass/epoxy laminate. In the last chapter, the development of damage is experimentally analysed in a carbon/epoxy laminate

La thérapie par ultrasons focalisés de haute intensité (HIFU) est une méthode non invasive et non ionisante pour l’ablation des tumeurs solides. Cependant, le mouvement des organes intra-abdominaux, dû principalement à la respiration, empêche les ultrasons de cibler correctement la tumeur. Dans ce contexte, un système HIFU robotisé tout-en-un qui compense le mouvement en temps réel pendant le traitement par HIFU a été développé. À cet effet, un système d’asservissement ultrasonore fonctionnant à une fréquence de 20 Hz, basé sur une méthode rapide de suivi du speckle ultrasonore pour l’estimation du mouvement, a été conçu. Il utilise une séquence d’alternance imagerie/exposition HIFU, dont le rapport cyclique est de 80 %, afin d’éviter les interférences d’ondes. Le système HIFU robotisé a été testé sur un fantôme imitant les tissus soumis à des mouvements sinusoïdaux 1D et 2D. Il en résulte une réduction de mouvement de plus de 80 % en 1D pour une fréquence de 0,25 Hz et de 90 % en 2D pour une fréquence de 0,1 Hz. Toutefois, il n' a pas pu être observé un effet significatif de la compensation du mouvement sur les lésions induites par HIFU.

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) therapy is a non-invasive and non-ionizing method for ablation of solid tumors. However, intra-abdominal organ motion, mainly due to breathing, is a major hurdle for proper targeting of the tumor. In this context, an all-in-one HIFU robotized system with motion compensation in real-time during HIFU treatment was developed. To this aim, an ultrasound visual servoing working at a frequency of 20 Hz, relying on a fast ultrasonic speckle tracking method for motion estimation, was designed. It uses an interleaved imaging/HIFU sonication sequence, with duty cycle of 80 %, in order to avoid wave interferences. The robotized HIFU system was tested on a tissue mimicking phantom undergoing a 1D and a 2D sinusoidal motion. As a result, motion reduction of more than 80 % in 1D for a frequency of 0.25 Hz and more than 90 % in 2D for a frequency of 0.1 Hz was obtained. However, it couldn't be observed a significant effect of motion compensation on the lesions induced by HIFU.

La thématique de la thèse est très vaste. Sont présentées les grandeurs cinématiques locales ou régionales qui agissent sur le corps humain. La deuxième partie de la thèse décrit les méthodes optiques, par lesquelles on peut mesurer les vibrations produites par les machines-outils sur le système humain main-bras au cours de l'activité au travail. Dans la troisième partie sont donnés les effets négatifs des vibrations qui se produisent sur le système humain main-bras pendant l'exposition aux vibrations. La quatrième partie de cette thèse contient la base théorique des techniques optiques utilisées pour mesurer les vibrations. Le chapitre cinq présente la méthodologie d'expérimentation pour mesurer les vibrations. Les résultats des mesures sont indiqués dans le sixième chapitre de la thèse. Dans le chapitre sept on présente la modélisation mécanique et mathématique du système humain main-bras avec trois degrés de liberté et le dernier chapitre contient les conclusions finales.

In the first part of the doctoral thesis are presented the local and global kinematics sizes which are acting on the human body. This is followsed with the optical methods by which we can measure the vibrations produced by the machine-tools and them action on the human hand-arm system during the work activity. In the third part are given the effects of vibrations that occur on the hand-arm system during the exposure of vibrations. The fourth part of this thesis contains the theorical basis of optical techniques used for vibrations measurement. Chapter five presents the experimental methodology of vibrations measurement in comparition betsween the two methods: classical and optical. The results of measurement are given in chapter six of the thesis. In chapter seven is given the mechanical and mathematical modeling of human hand-arm system with three degrees of freedom and the eighth chapter contains the final conclusions, the personal contributions and the future research directions.

▼ Personal electronic devices, such as cell phones and tablets, continue to decrease in size while the number of features and add-ons keep increasing. One particular feature of great interest is an integrated projector system. Laser pico-projectors have been considered, but the technology has not been developed enough to warrant integration. With new advancements in diode technology and MEMS devices, laser-based projection is currently being advanced for pico-projectors. A primary problem encountered when using a pico-projector is coherent interference known as speckle. Laser speckle can lead to eye irritation and headaches after prolonged viewing. Diffractive optical elements known as diffusers have been examined as a means to lower speckle contrast. Diffusers are often rotated to achieve temporal averaging of the spatial phase pattern provided by diffuser surface. While diffusers are unable to completely eliminate speckle, they can be utilized to decrease the resultant contrast to provide a more visually acceptable image. This dissertation measures the reduction in speckle contrast achievable through the use of diffractive diffusers. A theoretical Fourier optics model is used to provide the diffuser’s stationary and in-motion performance in terms of the resultant contrast level. Contrast measurements of two diffractive diffusers are calculated theoretically and compared with experimental results. In addition, a novel binary diffuser design based on Hadamard matrices will be presented. Using two static in-line Hadamard diffusers eliminates the need for rotation or vibration of the diffuser for temporal averaging. Two Hadamard diffusers were fabricated and contrast values were subsequently measured, showing good agreement with theory and simulated values. Monochromatic speckle contrast values of 0.40 were achieved using the Hadamard diffusers. Finally, color laser projection devices require the use of red, green, and blue laser sources; therefore, using a monochromatic diffractive diffuser may not optimal for color speckle contrast reduction. A simulation of the Hadamard diffusers is conducted to determine the optimum spacing between the two diffusers for polychromatic speckle reduction. Experimental measured results are presented using the optimal spacing of Hadamard diffusers for RGB color speckle reduction, showing 60% reduction in contrast. Les nuages, le lait, le papier, les tissus biologiques appartiennent tous à une même classe de milieux que l'on nomme diffusants de part leur habilité à transformer une onde incidente collimatée en un faisceau diffus. L'imagerie, ou le transfert d'information à travers ces milieux est a priori plus difficile qu'en milieu homogène, et les méthodes actuelles nécessitent une caméra en transmission du milieu complexe considéré. La présence de cette caméra est souvent considérée comme une faille de ces méthodes car la transmission de ces milieux est souvent hors d'atteinte par l'opérateur. Dans cette thèse nous posons la question du lien qui existe entre la lumière réfléchie et la lumière transmise en milieux fortement diffusant. Nous traitons ce problème de manière statistique et nous intéressons à la dépendance statistique qui existe entre la lumière réfléchie et la lumière transmise. Nous verrons que ce lien statistique persiste même pour des milieux fortement diffusants. Ce lien statistique peut être a la base de nouvelles méthodes de contrôle du front d'onde en milieux diffusant n'utilisant que des informations réfléchies par le milieu, permettant l'imagerie, le dépôt d'énergie ou d'informations à travers des milieux fortement diffusants.

Clouds, milk, paper or biological tissues are called scattering media for light. Indeed when a plane wave encounters one a these media, the light is scattered and looses its preferential direction. Consequently, imaging through these media is more difficult than in homogeneous media. The existing methods rely on a CCD camera measuring the transmitted light. Nonetheless, the transmitted side of the sample is most of the time out of reach of the operator. In this thesis we interest ourselves to the link that exists between the reflected light and the transmitted light for thick scattering media. From a statistical point of view, this link is equivalent to the statistical dependency between the reflected light and the transmitted light. We show that the statistical dependency persists even for very thick media allowing us to propose new imaging modalities based on it. This statistical dependency between the reflected and the transmitted light is a very rich function of the parameters of the system, and may allow us to control the transmitted light using reflected information only.
