▼ Mutualism is an often-complex positive interaction between species, each of which responds independently to varying biotic and abiotic conditions. Temperature is an important factor that can affect species both directly (e.g., physiologically) and indirectly (e.g., via its effects on interactions with consumers, competitors, and mutualists). Although much research has investigated the consequences of temperature for individual organisms, the effects of temperature on the formation, dissolution, and success of species interactions remain minimally understood. The unique ways in which species respond to temperature likely play a role in structuring communities. Environmental heterogeneity, including the thermal environment, can promote coexistence when species exploit resources in different ways, such as by occupying different thermal niches. This dissertation examines the consequences of temperature for participants in an ant-plant protection mutualism, and investigates how the thermal ecology of individual species affects the interaction. Many mutualisms involve multiple species, or interacting guilds. In these mutualisms, species interact with partner species that vary in multiple characteristics. Mutualists are quite sensitive to both partner quantity and partner quality (e.g., their effectiveness at performing a beneficial task). Mutualisms between ants and plants are common across a variety of habitats worldwide, which differ in thermal range, fluctuation, and seasonality. In light of ants’ well-studied and predictable responses to temperature, ant-plant interaction networks provide excellent systems for studying the thermal ecology of mutualisms. In ant-plant protection mutualisms, each of the participants (ants, plants, and enemies) likely differs in its response to temperature. In addition to the direct effects of temperature on ant species, temperature may affect the magnitude of mutualistic interactions among species by affecting the quantity and quality of the reward offered to partners, and the activity of the partners themselves and the plant’s enemies (i.e., herbivores). If herbivores are more thermally tolerant than the mutualistic ant defenders, the consequences for plants may well be severe; however, if herbivores are less thermally tolerant than are the ants, the effects of rising temperatures might be mitigated: although less-effective ants might be more frequent in a warmer world, herbivores would be less abundant there. This dissertation describes the thermal ecology of the participants in a mutualism between the cactus Ferocactus wislizeni and four of its common ant defenders (Forelius pruinosus, Crematogaster opuntiae, Solenopsis aurea, and Solenopsis xyloni) in the extreme environment of the Sonoran Desert, USA. The ants are attracted to extrafloral nectar produced by the plant, and in exchange protect the plants from herbivores, including a common phytophagous cactus bug, Narnia pallidicornis (Hemiptera: Coreidae). ▼ Kõdupuit on metsa oluline osa, mis on elupaigaks umbes veerandile kõigist metsaliikidest. Intensiivne metsa majandamine vähendab kõdupuidu mahtu kuni kümme korda ja seega ohustab vähemalt poolte kõdupuitu asustavate liikide püsimist. Poollooduslik metsandus, mis põhineb looduslikul uuendusel ja metsa mitmekülgsel väärtustamisel, võiks kõdupuiduelustikule soodsam olla. Käesolev doktoritöö kirjeldab poollooduslikul majandamisel loodud metsaelupaikade kvaliteeti. Selgus, et põlismetsade struktuur on väga erinev nii erinevate metsatüüpide vahel kui ka nende sees, ning et kõdupuidu kogused on Eesti metsades suuremad kui lõuna- ja põhjapoolsetes riikides. Elustiku-uuringud näitasid, et vanade männi- ja kuuse-segametsade mardikakooslused olid erinevad, linnukoosluste seas eristus aga põline lodumets. Eesti riigimetsa majandamine vastavalt FSC-serdile säilitab tänu looduslikule uuendusele ja mõõdukale harvendamisele osa elustikule olulist puistustruktuuri. Siiski väheneb mitmete struktuurielementide hulk tunduvalt, seda eriti väga suurte elus ja surnud puude, laialehiste puude ja kaua kõdunenud lamapuidu osas. Mardikate ja lindude liigirikkus ja kooslused neis metsades moodustasid ainult osa põlismetsades leitust. Ka Eesti raiesmike lamapuiduvaru ületab tunduvalt Põhjamaade intensiivmetsanduses kirjeldatu. Kuigi tänu loodusliku uuenduse kasutamisele säilis suuri lamapuid, kõdunesid need kiiremini ning enamik tüügaspuid hävines juba raie käigus. Raiesmikele jäetud säilikpuudest saab surres väärtuslik jäme kõdupuit. Väikestelt raiesmike mardikakoosluste liigirikkust umbes poole kõdupuidu eemaldamine biokütteks ei mõjutanud. Üldiselt kõrged kõdupuidumahud võivad seletada ka seda, miks ei leitud üksikute puidumardikaliikide jaoks vähimat liigi säilimiseks vajalikku puidukogust.; Dead-wood is an essential part of forests, that provides habitat for a quarter of all forest species. Intensive management for timber production reduces its amount up to ten times and consequently endangers half of dead-wood dependent species. Semi-natural forestry, which is based on natural regeneration and multiple forest values, might provide better opportunities for deadwood inhabiting biodiversity. This thesis describes the habitat value of Estonian forest environments created by semi-natural forestry. Old growth sites had very variable structure across as well as within different forest site types and the volumes of deadwood in the studied hemiboreal forests exceeded published values for south-boreal and north-temperate zones. Beetle assemblages were clearly segregated between dry-boreal pine and spruce-mixedwood forests, and swamps had a distinct bird assemblage. In mature stands of the FSC-certified state forests several structural attributes of biodiversity importance were available similarly to old growth stands, mainly because of natural regeneration and moderate thinning intensity. ▼ Antibiotics have been described as a 'wonder drug' that have transformed medicine since their discovery at the beginning of the 20th century and are used globally in safeguarding human and animal health. Environmental risk assessment (ERA) aims to ensure their environmental safety by setting protection limits that seek to prevent adverse effects upon populations and ecosystem function. In the case of antibiotics however, there is concern that ERA may not be fully protective of bacterial populations. This thesis examines the ERA of antibiotics and highlights that protection limits may in some cases be under-protective or over-protective for bacteria populations (including cyanobacteria), depending on the antibiotic mode of action and the species on which the protection limit is based. The first section of the thesis contains a systematic review including a meta-analysis of all publicly available aquatic ecotoxicity data. The results illustrate that generally bacteria are the most sensitive taxa to antibiotics compared with eukaryotes but that interspecies variability in sensitivity among bacteria can range by up to five orders of magnitude. This far exceeds the assessment factor of 10 used to account for such uncertainty in protection limits. It also shows that the costly testing on fish may not be required and in accordance with the principle of the 3Rs could be excluded from the ERA of antibiotics, as they are not likely to drive the protection limit. Further, it demonstrates that protection limits established for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) may not always be protective of environmental health and that both protection limits should be determined in ERA. Next, the thesis reports on the development and validation of a microplate assay for the rapid screening of chemical effects (here antibiotics) on cyanobacteria. The microplate assay is optimised to allow for the direct comparison of species sensitivity, ensuring consistent test conditions and thus limiting differences in antibiotic behaviour between assays. Reference toxicity testing with potassium dichromate demonstrates reproducibility over time and comparability with the standard shake flask test used in ERA. The microplate assay is then used to experimentally confirm the findings of the meta-analysis. In this work, interspecies sensitivity across eight cyanobacteria species was demonstrated to vary by up to 70 fold following exposure to β-lactam antibiotics but only by an order of magnitude for macrolides. Cyanobacteria were not sensitive to sulfonamides and thus are not likely to be suitable for the setting of protection limits for this antibiotic class. Finally in this thesis, species sensitivity distributions were created to examine how effective the protection limit currently derived in ERA is for antibiotics. For cephalosporins, there was a higher probability of under-protection whilst the protection limits were over-protective for classes of antibiotics with less interspecies differences in sensitivity, such as macrolides. ▼ Despite human interaction with the biophysical environment since the beginning of human history, traditional research generally studied human and natural systems separately when addressing human–nature interactions. The purpose of my research is to better understand the nesting ecology and interactions between local and international priorities for hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) conservation in El Salvador and Nicaragua, where >90% of eastern Pacific hawksbill nesting occurs. In the first study, I explained the realities experienced by coastal residents who share habitat with hawksbills in El Salvador and then identified and clarified implications of discrepancies between these realities and international priorities for hawksbill conservation. The main findings were 1) primary importance of hawksbills is economic value attached to egg sales, but deeper cultural connections exist, 2) egg purchase by hatcheries benefits hawksbills and humans and 3) opportunities for local residents to participate in decision-making are limited and should be increased. In the second study, I characterized the microhabitat preferences and repeatability of nest-site choice by hawksbills, and then clarified the implications of doomed egg relocation programs on gene pools of hawksbills. I found 1) hawksbills preferred nest sites with abundant vegetation on dynamic beaches in mangrove estuaries, 2) female hawksbills exhibited local adaptations to differences in nesting habitat and 3) individual hawksbills consistently placed nests under high percentages of overstory vegetation, but were inconsistent in nest placement related to woody vegetation borders. In the third study, I generated and analyzed thermal profiles of hawksbill nest environments and estimated the sex ratios and physical condition of hatchling hawksbills under natural and artificial conditions. The primary findings were 1) minimal differences in temperature existed between sand depths, 2) adjustment of nest depth is unlikely to compensate for climate change, 3) in situ clutches incubated at higher temperatures and produced less fit offspring and 4) egg relocation can contribute to recovery efforts. The findings of these studies offer insight into interactions between hawksbill population dynamics and local community development on the Pacific coast of Central America, and demonstrate the value of implementing an evidence-based approach to guide public policy and conservation strategies. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht das moralische Urteilsvermögen der Schülerinnen und Schüler einer 6. Klasse AHS Oberstufe zum Thema Tier- und Artenschutz. Im Zuge dieser Arbeit wurde eine Unterrichtsequenz erstellt, bei der die Schülerinnen und Schüler anhand einer ethischen Diskussion zum Schutz von Meeresschildkröten lernen sollen, moralisch zu handeln und ihre Urteile argumentativ zu begründen. Zuerst wurde anhand der Meeresschildkröten das Anliegen des Tier- und Artenschutzes in einem Stationenbetrieb erarbeitet. Nachdem sich die Schülerinnen und Schüler ein Wissen dazu angeeignet hatten, wurde ihnen mit Hilfe der Dilemma-Methode das moralische Handeln vermittelt. Dabei arbeiteten sie in Gruppen zusammen und überlegten sich Handlungsoptionen zu unterschiedlichen Dilemmata. Um die Umsetzung des Unterrichts zu evaluieren, wurden vor und nach der Dilemma-Methode Gruppendiskussionen durchgeführt. Dabei wurden die Konzepte zum Tier- und Artenschutz und das moralische Urteilsvermögen der Schülerinnen und Schüler sichtbar. Die Auswertung der Gruppendiskussion erfolgte mittels der qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse. Die Ergebnisse der Auswertung zeigten, dass die Schülerinnen und Schüler bereits vor der Unterrichtssequenz viele Konzepte zum Tier- und Artenschutz aufwiesen, die nur im geringen Maße bei der Umsetzung der Unterrichtssequenz erweitert wurden. Es wurde ersichtlich, dass die Schülerinnen und Schüler sowohl Schwierigkeiten hatten, ihr moralisches Handeln zu begründen und zu reflektieren als auch die Interessen anderer beteiligter Meinungen zu berücksichtigen.

The present work examines the moral judgment of the pupils of a sixth grade upper secondary school on animal and species protection. In the course of this work, a series of lessons was created in which the students should learn to act morally and justify their judgments in an argumentative way by means of an ethical discussion on the protection of sea turtles. First, the concern of animal and species protection in a station operation (Stationenbetrieb) was developed on the basis of sea turtles. After acquiring the necessary knowledge, the students were taught a moral discussion using the dilemma method. They worked together in groups and considered options for action to different dilemmas. To evaluate the performance of the lesson, group discussions were carried out before and after the dilemma method. The concepts of animal and species protection and the moral judgment of the students were analyzed. The analysis of the group discussion took place by using the method of the qualitative content analysis. The results showed that even before the lesson, the students had many concepts of animal and species protection, which were only slightly extended in the course of the lessons. It became apparent that students had difficulties both in substantiating and reflecting on their moral behavior, as well as taking into account the interests of other opinions involved.

▼ Pressure on Earth’s biodiversity is increasing worldwide, with at least one million species threatened with extinction and a 67% decline in vertebrate species populations over the last half century. Practical conservation actions that are able to generate the greatest conservation benefit in the most efficient way are needed. Colombia, a mega-diverse country, has the potential to preserve a considerable portion of the world’s biodiversity, making conservation in the country both regionally and globally relevant. However, human activities are transforming the country’s natural landscapes at an extremely high rate, making urgent the generation of effective conservation actions.Colombia, after decades of civil unrest, is now entering a post-conflict era. But the peace agreement signed in 2016 between the Colombian government and the strongest illegal armed group, FARC-EP is impacting the country’s biodiversity. New pressures are being imposed on areas of high biodiversity that previously were off-limits for development because of the conflict. This makes the generation of conservation plans particularly urgent. Post-conflict planning initiatives have the potential to limit environmental damage and increase formal protection of the most irreplaceable natural areas of Colombia. These plans need to be informed by an understanding of changes in risks to areas of high biodiversity importance, and the effectiveness of conservation efforts such as protected areas.The aim of this thesis was to contribute knowledge to improve the effectiveness of conservation decisions in Colombia through a better understanding of the threats to forest ecosystems and the species that inhabit them, and an evaluation of the effectiveness of land protection for biodiversity conservation in the country. I first reviewed the effect of armed conflict on biodiversity in other countries in order to explore what may change with the peace agreement in Colombia. Post-conflict periods in other regions have often had negative impacts on biodiversity. Based on this, I recommended that the Colombian conservation science community engage actively in the development of environmental zoning plans on territories that were under the control of illegal armed groups to ensure positive and durable outcomes for the nation’s globally significant biodiversity.Second, in order to understand the effect of armed conflict on deforestation in Colombia I analysed the spatial association between deforestation drivers and forest cover change in the country, with a particular focus on the effect of armed conflict and coca plantations (Erythroxylum coca). I generated spatial predictions of deforestation pressure based on the period 2000-2015 and then explored how armed conflict and coca cultivation were associated with spatial patterns of deforestation. My results showed that proximity to coca plantation and armed conflict intensity both increased deforestation pressure, as did proximity to roads, mining concessions and oil exploitation wells. ▼ One of the main attractions for tourists visiting Svalbard, Norway, are polar bears. The polar bear is a vulnerable species, dependent on sea ice to survive as this is where they hunt, wander and raise their cubs. Ship-based tourism poses a number of threats mainly due to the disturbances caused by the presence of ships, damage of critical habitats and the increasing interactions and deadly conflicts between humans and polar bears. Appropriate and effective legislation based on scientific knowledge of the impacts of ship-based tourism on polar bears is necessary to ensure sustainable tourism and environmental protection. Species protection and habitat conservation is not an issue isolated to Svalbard or the polar bears but rather just one part of the pressing global issue concerning loss of biodiversity, which is one of the greatest threats to humankind. The Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats (Bern Convention) aims to ensure the conservation of wild flora and fauna species and their habitats. At the time of signing, the Norwegian Government excluded Svalbard from the application of the Bern Convention, ensuring that national conservation policies for Svalbard would be promoted. The Svalbard Environmental Protection Act is the main act regulating environmental protection on Svalbard, including both general principles and specific provisions regarding species and habitat protection. This paper explores the various needs of the polar bear population in Svalbard and the impacts caused by ship-based tourism. The Bern Convention’s provisions relating to the identified threats posed by ship-based tourism are examined and compared with the corresponding provisions in the Svalbard Environmental Protection Act. Moreover, this paper analyses the potential benefits that could arise from the application of the Bern Convention to the Svalbard territory. This paper concludes that the protection of the polar bears could, de jure, be strengthened by the Bern Convention, mainly due to the extensive interpretation of the types of activities that should be prohibited by signatory states. However, the Bern Convention can only be enforced by non-binding mechanisms and it is therefore unlikely that the application of the convention would lead to stronger protection of the polar bears than that which is provided by national legislation. The protection of the polar bear from threats caused by ship-based tourism would therefore, de facto, most likely not be strengthened by the application of the Bern Convention.

Climate change, loss of habitat and over-exploitation of natural resources as well as the introduction of invasive alien species through human activities are resulting in an ever increasing risk of extinction of many plant and animal species. There are two major approaches to conserving threatened and endangered species. Firstly the large scale preservation of natural habitat and ecological processes, thereby protecting the species inhabiting the habitat. The second approach involves the ex-situ breeding of rare and endangered species. It is estimated that in the next 200 years approximately 800 mammalian species will require the assistance of breeding programs to ensure long term genetic viability. Biological Resource Banks (BRB) can potentially contribute to this challenge by providing a source of genes that can be used to counter the effects of external selection pressures, genetic drift and inbreeding depression in small or fragmented populations. These banks commonly contain biological materials such as cryopreserved sperm, embryos and cell cultures mainly as genetic and research resources. . Biological resource banks can potentially use these cryopreserved gametes together with assisted reproductive technologies (ART), such as artificial insemination (AI), in vitro fertilisation (IVF), embryo transfer (ET), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and nuclear transfer (NT) to maintain genetic heterogeneity in ex-situ and wild populations. Ascertaining the appropriate protocols for developing the ARTs necessary for non-domestic species is one of the major challenges faced by reproductive physiologists. Typically, there is very little available information about the processing of semen, the effects of diluents, concentration and type of cryoprotectants and freeze-thaw methods for sperm samples of non-domestic species. Procedures proven to be highly effective in humans and laboratory or domestic species, are frequently adopted and modified for use in related wildlife species. It is thus necessary to gain knowledge of the reproductive physiology of wildlife species in order to define effective protocols for the cryopreservation of biomaterials which assists in the conservation of South Africa‘s diverse wildlife species. Sperm quality assessment is a useful tool for assessing the reproductive health of free-ranging populations as well as for selecting individuals for future assisted reproduction programs.

▼ Since the discovery of nitric oxide (NO) during the 1980’s, there has been great interest in the molecule’s mechanism of action. The main function of NO is thought to be as a second messenger in cell signalling pathways; however it has also been identified as a toxin, pro-oxidant and possible antioxidant in an array of physiological and pathological scenarios. The contradictory roles of NO in cellular and tissue injury are controversial, with evidence that NO can be both deleterious and protective against damage, depending upon the concentration and duration of NO exposure. A well-established mechanism that causes injury is through the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), in the presence of molecular oxygen (O2). Under these conditions NO has been considered to act as a toxin via the generation of reactive nitrogen species (RNS), and as an antioxidant, through its ability to mediate cellular processes and attenuate oxidative damage. Oxidative damage is particularly important in the brain, which is highly vulnerable to damage via oxidative stress due to its high metabolic rate and reduced capability to recover following injury. Consequently, oxidative stress has been associated with several neurodegenerative disorders including, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy and ischemic stroke. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of prolonged NO release against oxidative damage in cell culture and acutely in hippocampal brain slices. A model of oxidative stress was established using the mitochondrial redox cycling agent menadione, which produced cytotoxicity via the generation of superoxide. Administration of a novel NO donor, tertiary-dodecane S-nitrosothiol (tDodSNO), demonstrated a protective effect at high concentrations (>50 µM) in both cell culture and in hippocampal brain slices. In cell culture this effect was associated with a reduction in the expression of p53 and changes in the concentration of zinc and iron within the cell. These findings highlight the importance of understanding the role that NO plays under conditions of oxidative stress, as this would be therapeutically beneficial for the development of novel NO donor drugs as an antioxidant to improve the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. ▼ The endangered brown bear (Ursus arctos) in Greece is in urgent need of effective protection and management; that management should be based on information that is both reliable and quickly attained. After observing bears marking and rubbing on power poles in Greece, we initiated a study to collect information that will enable us to better understand this behavior and design an effective method for studying the species in the country. Research carried out in Chapter II aimed in describing the types of power-pole related signs and how these deteriorate throughout time and comparing their amount with other signs commonly used in the study of the species. After an initial inspection of all power poles in the main study area of Grevena, thirty-nine power poles were selected and inspected monthly for a year. The information and experience gained in the main study area was used to survey three additional areas, thus covering a representative sample of the species distribution in the country. Power pole-related behaviour was associated with mud smears, hair deposits, and bite and claw marks. Tracks and scats also have been used to document the presence of brown bears in Greece, but fewer of these were found in all areas surveyed. Deterioration rate of power-pole related signs was slower than that of tracks and scats. The results of the research carried out in Chapter II, indicated that power-pole related behaviour is associated with the marking and rubbing behaviour of the species. In order to better understand this poorly understood aspect of bear behaviour, the intensity of marking and rubbing behaviour throughout time and the factors that influence it were investigated in Chapter III, as well as the “natural” behaviour of the species. In order to examine the intensity of power pole-related behaviour throughout time, 13 sampling units were selected and inspected monthly for 27 months. The influence of different factors on the intensity of the behaviour was examined by carrying out a second, systematic sampling of all the power poles in the main study area and recording 16 different ecological parameters. The “natural” behaviour of the species was recorded opportunistically, during field work. The difference in the intensity of the marking and rubbing behaviour throughout the year was statistically significant and was most intense between April and June, shortly before the beginning of the mating season in Greece. According to classification tree analysis, the most important factor affecting the intensity of power pole-related behaviour was the intensity of human activity in a specific area. Field research documented also two already known and two, previously not documented, forms of marking and rubbing behaviour. ▼ This thesis contributes to the economic literature on invasive species, social capital connection to climate change and environmental good provision as well as energy demand management. It contains five independent papers connected by the broader theme of environmental management. Two papers (I and II) deal with invasive species while the third and fourth probes the effect of social capital on carbon dioxide emissions (CO₂) and individuals’ decision to contribute toward environmental protection. The first paper attempts a comprehensive theoretical and empirical review of findings in economics with respect to the challenging question of how to manage invasive species. We find a relatively large body of literature on the assessment of damage costs of invasive species; single species and groups of species at different geographical scales. Estimated damage costs show large variation, from less than 1 million USD to costs corresponding to 12% of gross domestic product (GDP), depending on the methods employed, geographical scale, and scope with respect to inclusion of different species. In the second paper, a simple bioeconomic model is developed and applied to the management of the aquatic invasive species Elodea canadensis (Michx) in Lake Lötsjön in Sweden. A weed harvesting programme is proposed and numerically investigated based on the model. Results suggest that it is economically optimal to engage in the weed cutting programme since it yields positive net economic benefits and that early action is the best strategy. Social capital is the main connecting factor between Paper III and IV. In both papers, different constructs of social capital were computed through principal component analysis and modelled empirically to explain different environmental outcomes. Paper III investigates whether or not social capital explain Swedish county-level aggregate and sectoral per capita CO₂ emissions in an environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) framework. The results showed significant dampening effects of trust and overall social capital indices on total emissions, but impact heterogeneity was evident among sectors. Estimated effects were negative on emissions from industry but positive on transport emissions. In Paper IV, we assess the influence of social capital on individuals’ willingness to contribute toward environmental protection in Sweden. Findings show significant impact of social capital. The fifth paper provides an empirical analysis of energy demand in Ghana. Elasticities of seven key disaggregated energy types were estimated using time series analysis. The results suggest energy prices, income, urbanization and economic structure are significant demand drivers of the different energy types with varying elasticities. Further evidence show high degree of inter-fuel substitution in energy demand in Ghana, particularly from gasoline, diesel and kerosene toward LPG consumption.

Moore Major: Environmental Horticulture The accelerating loss of biodiversity is a growing concern throughout the world. With a world population of over 6 billion (Weier, 2000), humankind is eroding the ecological foundations of plant biodiversity causing the loss of unique gene pools, species, and even entire communities of species forever (Tuxill, 1999). Florida provides a case in point. Approximately a thousand people on average move to the state daily (State of Florida, 2007). Habitat destruction and associated alteration of abiotic conditions, particularly water levels and fire regimes, have drastically threatened Florida?s rich plant diversity. Florida has undergone deforestation, wetland drainage, agricultural development and urbanization, causing significant loss of natural species diversity. Today an increasing portion of the state?s flora is considered to be endangered, threatened, or rare (Chafin, 2000). Public parks, as one specific manifestation of habitat protection, play an increasingly important role in the conservation of plant biodiversity, as well as providing recreational and educational opportunities in an ever-increasing urban environment. Parks are also becoming more important as a means of preserving regional character. With the growing awareness of local biodiversity and the fear of urban monotony, urban communities appear to be moving towards encouraging ecological diversity by making changes to design concepts and management of parks. This study surveyed tree species diversity and species richness in six public municipal parks in Broward County, Florida. Analysis was conducted in two areas of Broward County, one area representing a group of older landscapes, Fort Lauderdale incorporated in 1911, and the other area representing a group of newer landscapes in Southwest Ranches incorporated 2000 and Weston incorporated 1996. Three parks were located in the municipality of Fort Lauderdale and three were in the municipalities of Weston and Southwest Ranches. The study evaluated whether Broward County municipal parks established within the last twenty-five years (after 1987) contain significantly greater tree biodiversity and species richness than those of the same approximate size developed more than 85 years ago (earlier than 1923). The study?s conception is borne out of an interest in whether unique, rare and representative plant communities are being harbored within municipal public parks. Results reveal that old parks had a higher species diversity, species richness, and density of native tree species, indicating a higher biodiversity. New parks had higher density and coverage of exotic species, indicating a lack of management for native species. Overall, management of older parks appears to support the protection of native plants when compared to newer parks. ▼ Vitex keniensis Turrill (Verbenaceae), the Meru oak, is a popular but threatened indigenous forest tree species in East Africa valued for high quality timber, fast growth, edible fruits, medicine, bee forage (honey). The tree has a high agroforestry potential. However, efforts to promote its propagation and conservation is hampered by lack of information on its biological and ecological characteristics. The taxonomic distinction between its populations in Mt. Kenya and Nyambene hills and those of V. fischeri in Lake Victoria and Mt. Elgon regions has been unclear. The research project investigated the taxonomy and compared the mating systems and genetic structure of the four populations of V. keniensis and V. fischeri . The Vitex populations showed similarity in their leaf, flower, seed and seedling morphology, phenological pattern, polyploidy (2n=96) and autotetraploidy, homogamy, partial self-incompatibility, bee-pollination, inter-population reproductive compatibility and low inter-population variation 3.5%. These observations differed from the expected pattern of their geographical distance, ecological gradient and the current taxonomic grouping. The low population divergence could be attributed to common ancestry and possibly lack of divergence. V. keniensis and V. fischeri should be considered conspecific. The name V. fischeri has priority, the well-known name, V. keniensis (Meru oak) therefore falls into synonymy, thus Vitex fischeri (= V. keniensis ). The bulk of genetic variation is within the populations (96.5%), therefore sampling from any of the four populations can capture a sufficiently large gene pool of the species for improvement breeding and conservation. It is a bee-pollinated, autotetraploid, therefore a minimum of a hundred dispersed mature trees at least 300 m apart can be preserved in-situ, and their propagules used for ex-situ conservation, breeding and propagation stock (living gene-bank). ▼ Up until 30 years ago an extensive, flower-rich grassland vegetation containing many species rare in the Netherlands used to be common on Dutch river dikes. However, the deterioration of the flora on dikes was already being reported at the end of the 1960s. At that time too, ecologists warned that the planned reinforcement of the dikes along the Rhine, Waal, Lek and IJssel would adversely affect the flora. Their gloomy forecasts have proved to be correct. Between 1968 and 1992 as much as 89% of the locations with a dry floodplain grassland vegetation in the Netherlands disappeared. In 1992 the vegetation of over 90% of the river dikes consisted of species-poor grassland on which sheep graze, and rough vegetation mown for hay. Only about 7% of the surface area of the river dikes was covered by relatively species-rich grasslands belonging to the phyto-sociological syntaxa Arrhena-theretum elatioris and Lolio-Cynosuretum , both belonging to the Arrhenatherion elatioris . Only 1% was covered by the typical species-rich dry grassland Medicagini-Avenetum . The last remnants of these grasslands are in imminent danger of disappearing. The deterioration in the semi-natural vegetation has mainly been caused by the fact that the slopes of the dikes are increasingly being used agriculturally (fertilization, overgrazing, use of herbi-cides) but also because ecological features were insufficiently taken into account while reinforcing the dikes. In 1984 a research project was started to ascertain the optimum structure and growing con-ditions for the grass cover on river dikes (Sýkora & Liebrand, 1987; van der Zee, 1992). The next step was to test the feasibility of the ecological engineering measures proposed in the above mentioned projects empirically. In the research project described in this thesis the core questions were therefore whether the valuable, species-rich vegetation on the dikes can return after reinforcement works, and, if so, what are the pre-conditions for this during and after the reinforcement. The research was carried out on the basis of data of 209 permanent quadrats divided over 125 trial fields. Each permanent quadrat has its own specific method of reconstruction, sowing and management. Ninety-eight percent of the plant species found before reconstruction, reappeared after recon-struction. Most species reappeared on the replaced former top layer. Only a few (rare) species did not reappear but were still present in the unmodified zone. Most relatively rare species occur only in low numbers and consequently they are still at risk of disappearing, especially if no proper management is applied. Because of this, a spared zone seems to be the best guarantee for the conservation of the plant species after the reconstruction. In the period 1987-1994 9 plant communities were distinguished within the vegetation of the experimental river dike. ▼ In the modem arable landscape, the vegetation of perennial field boundaries have important ecological functions such as providing a habitat for farmland wildlife, providing overwintering sites for predatory insects, providing movement corridors, reducing soil erosion and acting as an agrochemical buffer. In recent decades, plant diversity in these linear landscape structures has declined severely. The present study aims at identifying the most important factors that control botanical species richness in herbaceous arable field boundaries. The field boundary vegetation is usually managed by farmers who consider the boundary to be a source of weeds. Therefore, research concentrated on factors that simultaneously increase species richness and reduce weed abundance in the boundary vegetation. Species richness was primarily affected by an accumulation of nutrients in the field boundary. Nutrients may reach the boundary in two ways: (i) by misplacement of fertilizer and (ii) by capture of arable nutrient resources (through root growth into the field) by plants in field boundaries. The high nutrient levels in the boundary resulted in an increased productivity of the vegetation and a dominance of tall, competitive species. Subsequently, low statured species disappeared from the habitat and species richness declined. The most common type of boundary management practiced by farmers did not include removal of the cut material after mowing which strengthens the eutrophication of arable field boundaries. Herbicide drift had adverse effects on species richness but the effects were less severe and consistent compared to the effects of nutrients. The main factor promoting weed growth (in the study area primarily the clonal weeds Cirsium arvense and Elymus repens) was the presence of bare soil in the boundary. Bare soil may be created by cultivation activities of the farmer or by the smothering effects of cut material left lying in the boundary after mowing. Bare soil generally promotes the establishment of annual weed species. Furthermore, the perennial weed Elymus repens was found to be able to concentrate its biomass selectiveley in bare patches within the perennial vegetation. Additionally, bare soil was found to favour the establishment of tall competitive (early successional) species compared to later successional species which are indicative of more species rich plant communities. The results of this study suggest that boundaries that are not regularly disturbed and low to moderately productive combine species richness with low weed abundance. This may be achieved by a regular and consistent mowing regime of the boundary vegetation that includes removal of the cuttings.
