▼ Special Activity Generators have been a redevelopment tool utilized by governments in order to revitalize lethargic downtowns. For small and mid-sized cities, minor league baseball stadiums have become a popular anchor development as a type of
Special Activity
Generator; while sports facilities are well studied, minor league stadiums have not been the focus of significant research. My dissertation uses a sequential explanatory mixed methodology to answer whether minor league baseball stadiums are successful as
Special Activity Generators. I first use a quantitative analysis of sixteen stadiums built around the year 2000 that shows a large effect for the areas around the stadium compared to the rest of the city. However, that growth is created by concentrating redevelopment, not creating new activity. Two case studies clarify that the stadiums were critical to the observed redevelopment efforts, but also highly the need for thorough planning and collocated amenities prior to construction in order to maximize the results from the public investment.

▼ Special generators need
special attention in developing travel demand models since the standard trip generation and distribution model in the conventional four-step approach do not provide reliable estimates of their travel patterns. New modeling approaches such as activity-based and tour-based models, considering travel behavior of individual household or person, seem to be more appropriate for those
special generators. However, only a few practical applications have been made since these approaches usually require a lot of data resources and computing time to solve their complicated model structure.
The primary objectives of this research are to improve the trip generation and trip distribution of
special generators (e.g., university) by applying an activity-based approach, and to provide a transitional methodology for practically incorporating the activity-based data into a conventional planning model. The research developed a spatial and temporal activity-based model dealing with
special generator data of North Carolina State University (NCSU). Also, the research tested the transferability of university student travel data by using statistical approach and indicated that the university students' travel data can be transferred for the two cases considered. The NCSU activity-based model provided the estimates of trip generation at the disaggregated level of individual buildings by hours of the day - a disaggregation was not obtainable from a conventional planning model. The model estimates, student building presence and trip generation, compared well to field data from student registration records and student trips observed at sample buildings. The results revealed that the activity-based model well replicated both building presence and trip generation. In addition, the research compared the estimated trip generation of the activity-based model to that of a traditional planning model and discussed findings in terms of model accuracy, structure, data requirements, and capability of model application. The insights gained from this study will serve as the basis of activity-based Triangle Regional model in North Carolina.

▼ Most of the wind energy conversion systems (WECS) currently in operation in the world use asynchronous generators in the transformation of wind energy into electricity energy. In Brazil, although it is recognized that the parcel of wind farms is still very reduced, it is evidenced that the principle of the employed generation is mainly synchronous. Within this principle, the turbine operates with variable speed and the synchronization of the generation with the network connection is made through static frequency converters. In this particular case it is noted that the currently available resources of simulation that uses the highlighted technology here, are still scarce. Notably, the question aggravates when considering that the used generating machines do not consist in conventional synchronous units, the wind technology prioritizes the employment of special six-phase synchronous generators. This fact guided the subject of research of this dissertation, which presents a proposal for the mathematical modeling of special six-phase synchronous generators in the time domain, and aims at their application in the conversional systems of variable wind speed. Having completed their representations and their computational implementation, there follows a set of studies of the operational performance of these special machines inserted into a wind complex. Objectifying the establishment of comparisons between these generators and conventional three-phase generators, aspects such as wave forms, improvement of the harmonic distortions, better performance of the damper windings, among others, are focused and then the advantageous properties associated with the employment of these special machine are highlighted throughout this dissertation.

▼ This dissertation focuses on two types of impact studies: one is related to site developments; the other examines the socioeconomic effects of mileage fees. More specifically, in the first part, the link distribution percentage and
special generator methods for performing traffic impact analysis are compared and enhanced; and in the second part, the impacts of adopting a mileage fee in Florida are assessed. In Florida, both the link distribution percentage and
special generator methods are used to conduct traffic impact analysis. However, there is no systematic research to show whether these two methods produce similar results or if one outperforms the other. This dissertation describes an empirical study that compares these two methods. Based on the study, these two methods are observed to produce fairly consistent estimates of traffic impacts caused by the chosen hypothetical scenarios. As the link distribution percentage approach is easier to implement, this dissertation recommends this less cumbersome approach. However, both of the above mentioned approaches estimate development trips on each link from the path flow or origin-destination (O-D) specific link flow distribution. Since these two flow distributions may not be uniquely determined, an open question remains regarding the selection of a particular flow distribution as the basis for traffic impact studies. This dissertation suggests using the mean of all the path or O-D specific user equilibrium solutions as the basis for traffic impact studies. The second part of the dissertation examines the impacts of implementing mileage fees in Florida. Four different mileage fee structures are tested. The result shows that the distributional impacts of the revenue-neutral fee are negligible. However, flat fees are found to be regressive at higher rates. In contrast, step fee, a two-level tariff structure is found to be less regressive. Fees based on vehicle fuel efficiency and vehicle type are found to be environmentally friendly, but areas regressive as flat fees. This dissertation suggests that a complex mileage fee structure is needed to balance the spatial distribution of the impacts, reduce the regressive nature of the fee, generate sufficient revenue, protect the environment, and achieve other objectives simultaneously. ▼ TBEST is a comprehensive third generation transit demand forecasting model, developed by the FDOT Public Transit Office (PTO) to help transit agencies in completing their Transit Development Plans (TDPs). The on-going project funded by FDOT, related to TBEST, aims at further enhancing the capabilities of the TBEST model based on additional opportunities identified by the research team. The project focuses on enhancing TBEST’s capabilities in following areas: 1) Improving the precision of socio- demographic data by using property appraisal data (parcel data) and, 2) Improving the quality of data regarding trip attraction. Based on the improvement areas, this study aims at performing an exploratory analysis to 1) Identify the differences in activity levels (population and employment) within transit stop buffers due to change in input data i.e. from aggregate census data to disaggregate parcel data. 2) Explore various strategies (development of employment based trip attraction and, parcel land use based trip attraction and exploring how special generators are dealt with in the past studies) to enhance the trip attraction capability of the TBEST model. The results obtained from this analysis provide insights on the strategies and helps define suggestions to further enhance the precision of TBEST model. The results show that use of parcel level data improves the accuracy in capturing the activity levels within the catchment area of each stop. The results also suggest use of parcel land use based trip attraction for stops with special generators or use of interaction variable (interaction between special generator dummy and size (square footage etc.) of the special generator) to enhance the trip attraction capability of the TBEST model.

▼ The present thesis, concerns the design procedure, modeling and implementation of the optimal configuration of the electric part of an experimental power plant, as well as the study of alternative generating unit configurations in the case of power generation from sea waves. An experimental power plant for power generation from sea waves was constructed on Psitalia in the frame of the research project PAVET 00BE142 entitled “Experimental Plant for Power Generation from Sea Waves”. The entire plant consisted of three similar units, each one involving a coupled hydraulic - mechanical - electrical system for wave energy extraction. Moreover, the case of linear synchronous generator with permanent magnets (LPMSG), as alternative unit for electric power generation from sea waves, has been studied. A particular, linear generator with permanent magnets was designed, accounting the features of the sea wave and the behaviour of the floating buoy. Appropriate coupled electromagnetic-mechanical-hydraulic models incorporating Finite Element Analysis (FEA) have been developed, enabling a dynamic simulation of the whole system performance involving a detailed field analysis of the permanent magnet linear generator. Also, a new hybrid simulation model, incorporating finite elements (FE) combined with analytical solution (macroelement) in the air gap area accounting for skewed magnets in linear generators (LPMSG) have been developed. The results of simulation of performance combined with the experimental measurements, illustrate the suitability of the developed models in applications for power generation from sea waves.
