▼ Governments have done little to address poverty and homelessness despite awareness of the increasing number of people affected by these issues. Neoliberalizing processes and resulting federal and provincial
social policy changes since the 1980s have driven the decimation of Canada’s welfare state and contributed to expanding inequalities that systematically privilege a wealthy few at the expense of the balance of Canadians, particularly those living in poverty. Collective resistances may be the best available and most powerful tool people in poverty, including those who experience homelessness, possess to challenge government policy directions and outcomes that marginalize their voices, needs, and wants.
The literature on collective action of people in poverty and who experience homelessness is sparse. Scholarship incorporating the voices of people who experience homelessness and participate in collective action is meager within this small body of literature. The role agency plays in individual behaviors and how such choices may be shaped by
social conditions, is relatively unexamined. An activist ethnography, with structural violence as described by Paul Farmer as the critical frame, was used to explore the role various types of agency played in collective actions of people with experiences of homelessness or experience housing insecurity in the Capital Region of British Columbia.
Primary questions guiding the research were “What were participants’ experiences of collective change efforts? How may these efforts be understood within a structural violence framework? To answer these questions I chronicle and critically examine the challenges and successes of “The Committee”, a group of housed and unhoused activists as one example of collective actors that ‘push back’ against processes and practices that produce and reproduce homelessness.
Findings suggest that structurally violent processes generate embodied outcomes, lived experiences that constrain agency, often working to exclude people with experience of homelessness from collective resistances. Participation of people who are actively homeless or with experiences of homelessness in collective resistances requires attending to basic material needs and daily life issues in ways that allow meaningful participation in organizing work as a precursor to collective action. Allies can reproduce structures of violence and contribute to dismantling those same structures. Relationships between people with experience of homelessness and allies may work to mitigate unequal power relations, allowing some people with experiences of homelessness opportunities for participation in collective resistances not otherwise available to them. Implications for grassroots organizing and inclusion of people with experience of homelessness in collective resistances are included.

▼ An exploratory analysis of accessibility-based
social exclusionary mechanisms in Edinburgh and the Lothians is presented, with the aim of highlighting the benefits of a technique that incorporates socio-geodemographic variables. Accession software is used to produce accessibility times to three different types of services. Postcode centroids are used to represent centres of population, while the Navteq road network and latest public transport timetables are used to model the transport networks. In addition, census derived socio-geodemographic variables are included in the analysis. This allows results to be tested within a framework of scenarios, designed to highlight areas at greatest potential risk from accessibility-based
social exclusion. Results highlight the benefits of using such an approach, demonstrating that accessibility analysis alone is insufficient to highlight excluded areas. Examples show potentially excluded areas in Dunbar, Haddington and Dalkeith, as opposed to the large rural areas with the poorest accessibility levels. It is suggested that such techniques could be adopted, in conjunction with census 2011 data, to create a geo-database containing a multitude of variables that should include accessibility values. Making this an online resource could enable an unprecedented breakthrough in investigating and disseminating accessibility based
exclusion problems.

▼ This study examines the effect of
social exclusion on state authenticity, the extent to which one feels real and true to the self in different situations. In addition to this, the effect of
social exclusion on basic need satisfaction, in particular the need for relatedness, mood, and situational self-awareness is investigated. A crossword puzzle task measures self-regulation as an indicator of experimental manipulation effectiveness. Analysis on the data from 52 females and 33 males using between-
subject ANOVAs reveals that
social exclusion has no significant effect on state authenticity, basic need satisfaction, mood, or situational self-awareness. Discussion of findings is in relation to other studies investigating the effects of
social exclusion, with contrasts also drawn between self-esteem literature and the concept of state authenticity. Discussion extends to suggestions for future research avenues.

▼ Previous research on
social exclusion has found that it has many
social and personal consequences, such as disrupting self-regulation, and lowering well-being, self-esteem and the need to belong. However, authenticity is a part of the self that has not been studied with respect to
social exclusion. The present study aims to investigate whether state authenticity (authenticity that is affected by
social environments) is affected by
social exclusion, and whether these effects are mediated by trait authenticity, mood, situational self-awareness, or satisfying psychological needs. Participants filled out a personality questionnaire and were given feedback about a future consequence, either being told that they were accident prone, that they would have a future filled with belonging, or that they would end up alone. Following this feedback, participants were given a self-regulation task (a crossword puzzle) Upon completion (either by running out of the allotted time or giving up), participants filled out questionnaires on mood, situational self-awareness, satisfying psychological needs, and state authenticity. It was found that
social exclusion had no effect on state authenticity. Self-regulation was affected by
social exclusion, and those high in trait authenticity were higher in positive affect regardless of
exclusion. No other effects were found. Therefore, self-regulation had no effect on state authenticity.

▼ Individuals are highly attuned to cues of
exclusion, even when it is not caused by an actual
social threat. To date there is little evidence identifying the situational factors that could buffer individuals from the detrimental consequences of
exclusion. Our study investigated how the presence of a close friend, a potential attachment figure, affects the perception and experience of one-person
exclusion. Participants played Cyberball either in the presence of a friend or alone. They were either included by both players or excluded by one player while the other remained fair. Although all excluded participants detected, participants who were excluded in the presence of their friends reported significantly better mood-and-need levels compared to those who participated alone. Individual differences did not moderate the effects. These findings suggest that although it does not affect the perception of
social exclusion, the presence of a friend could buffer against the negative effects of
exclusion.

▼ This study examines the intersections of class, social exclusion and education policy during New Labour’s time in office, with the bulk of its focus falling upon secondary schooling. Working against wider political, academic and popular effacements and recodifications of class, and with a particular focus upon its marginalisation within both political and academic discourses of social exclusion, both concepts are mapped out in ways which allow them to be understood in tandem and as rooted within the structures, processes and relations of society and its constitutive institutions. Qualitative in approach, and set within the ebb and flow of long running educational struggles heavily imbued with issues of class, the study uses semistructured interviews with 21 education professionals to explore the impact of the current market-based education policy regime upon the institutional structures, processes and professional practices which confront working class pupils on a daily basis. In turn, it examines the ways in which working class pupils and the shaping of their educational experiences are understood by those trained and charged to teach in an education system intimately bound to the re/production of class inequalities and social exclusion. Parallel to this, the project uses biographically orientated interviews with 17 working class young people in order to explore the variegated ways in which class and social exclusion intersect within their schooling careers as they are shaped along shifting axes through, within, and against the kinds of contexts and conditions mapped out by education professionals. The study provides key insights into the contemporary circulation of class within schools: invoked through crosscutting narratives of ‘ability’, ‘deficiency’ and ‘social constructivism’ by education professionals caught within systemic pressures to perform, and a ubiquitous facet of working class educational experience which is continually stirring, settling, straining to be re/made, and wrought through shifting layers and dimensions of in/exclusion.

▼ Background: The aim of this study is to investigate the association between problematic drug use (PDU) and
social exclusion and stigma in a deindustrialised New Zealand town (DNZT). The purpose of this research is to capture the perceptions; experiences and life course journey of individuals with long term problematic drug use (IPDUs) and contribute new knowledge and understanding of this lived experience.
Method: A review of national and international literature related to the phenomena of
social exclusion, stigmatisation and problematic drug use was conducted to theoretically inform the study. The small-scale study employed a qualitative approach that involved a non-probability sample that met the criteria for long-term problematic drug use. This allowed respondents to share their perceptions and experiences of
social exclusion, stigma and PDU in their own words and by their own frames of reference. The researcher occupied a position of insider. Following transcription of the interviews a six stage thematic analysis was conducted on the data.
Findings: The downward
social and psychological trajectory of this respondent group began before the respondents encountered long-term unemployment and before the onset of problematic drug use, initiated at an early age by common experiences of trauma,
exclusion and damaged home environments. For this cohort it appears problematic drug use may have become a coping mechanism or relief from the reverberating impact of stigma,
exclusion and marginalisation.
Conclusion: The cohort interviewed show significant experiences of stigma, trauma and a disrupted life journey. These experiences became considerably exacerbated by problematic drug use and it appears most of the respondents have internalised and embraced a permanent status as ‘addicts’ with limited expectation of change. Respondents spoke of being ‘parked’ on methadone in respect of their drug problem and excluded from employment. This research suggests there is a need to look beyond the presented problem of addiction and its apparent solution of methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) and explore a more holistic strength-based approach that addresses issues of inequality,
social care and discrimination.

▼ Financial exclusion has become increasingly prevalent in
Australia. While solutions to this challenging social policy
problem have, thus far, tended to focus on addressing financial
market failures, this thesis looks instead at the role social
relations can play in assisting individuals overcome financial
exclusion. The discussion is framed by an extensive body of
literature pointing to the valuable instrumental benefits that
can flow from social capital and social networks. This thesis
begins by tracing the intellectual history of these concepts and
then specifically examines the role of social networks in
addressing financial exclusion.
Through a series of semi-structured interviews with a group of
financially excluded people in Melbourne and Canberra, this
thesis will provide a better understanding of the lived
experience of financial exclusion. Research participants were
drawn from the client base of an innovative Australian
microfinance program, the ‘No Interest Loan Scheme’.
Importantly, evidence was also collected on the positive impact
such microfinance programs can have in both promoting financial
inclusion and improving the lives of their clients. The
definition of financial exclusion used in this thesis centred on
the inability to access affordable and appropriate credit. Using
this definition, I was able to document how financial exclusion,
including its social consequences, manifested for the
participants in my study. High degrees of exclusion from the
mainstream financial system and the use of the fringe credit
market emerged as recurrent themes amongst participants. Social
distance was identified as a key source of exclusion.
The types of social networks that the research participants had
were documented and a picture emerged of how social support, when
it was available, could be drawn upon to help mitigate exclusion.
The way that social networks help or hinder financial exclusion
was also considered. Significantly, a comprehensive examination
of this nature into the social networks of financially excluded
people in Australia had not been conducted before, so this thesis
makes an important contribution to the literature. In particular,
my findings serve to further validate the benefits associated
with social capital and deliver new insights into the content and
quality of social relations in Australia.

▼ Financial
exclusion is a lack of opportunity to access financial services. Concerns about financial
exclusion are two-fold. On a
social front, it contributes to the broader issue of
social exclusion. From an economic view,
exclusion from credit inhibits consumption smoothing and potentially contributes to widening inequality.Financial
exclusion is commonly indicated by limited availability of financial outlets, low ownership of financial products and infrequent use of financial services. Instead of studying the incidence of non-participation, this thesis more closely captures the essence of financial
exclusion by focusing on the ability to access financial services, and hence the capacity to deal with unforeseen financial needs.Using the General
Social Survey 2010 and the Community Understanding of Poverty and
Social Exclusion survey, this thesis uses the following as indicators of financial
exclusion: product application rejections, reported difficulties in accessing financial institutions, and whether assistance is required for banking activities. A set of dimensions for financial
exclusion in Australia is derived, capturing self-
exclusion, geographical issues, ethnicity, disability and cost. Different combinations of personal attributes are identified as risk factors for different dimensions, supporting the view that financial
exclusion is a multi-dimensional issue. The serviceability calculations used by Australian banks are replicated in this thesis to assess people’s capacity to repay loans and hence their eligibility for bank credit. Findings show that 15.7% of the population would be systematically credit excluded. The main contributor to serviceability-based credit
exclusion is found to be insufficient surplus income after basic living expenses and housing costs. Sensitivity analysis shows that relaxation of key product conditions would only narrowly reduce the ineligibility rate. Finally, this thesis investigates the correlation between financial
exclusion and financial stress, and between indebtedness and financial stress. Credit-related
exclusion indicators are correlated with cash flow problems, healthcare delays, foregone education/training, and inability to raise emergency finance. Debtors with poor serviceability are also likely to experience cash flow problems, which raises questions about “over-inclusion”. Overall, the results suggest that a balance is required between satisfying consumer demand and prudent credit provision.

▼ This thesis uses data from The Survey of Texas Adults, 2004 to analyze the giving and volunteering patterns of various groups focusing on the role of several relevant
social and demographic characteristics and also focusing on whether or not an individual was asked to participate in these various activities. Multivariate logistic regression analysis is performed to test for statistical relationships between selected factors and giving and volunteering rates. In each of the analysis, logistic regression models are estimated to assess how factors such as race, education, citizenship, gender, age, income, and being asked affect the outcomes of money given to religious organizations, money given to other organizations, being asked to volunteer, and solicited for money. Findings suggest that, overall, Latinos are not significantly different in their odds of giving to religious organizations when compared to their white counterparts. The results of the next set of logistic models, however, show that Latinos have lower odds of giving to other groups or organizations. In terms of who is asked to volunteer or solicited for money, the results suggest that Latinos are not asked to volunteer at the same rate as whites; therefore, limiting an important avenue of participation. These finding confirm the hypothesis that Latinos are just as likely to make financial contributions to their local church, but they have lower odds of giving to other, nonreligious organizations. In addition, the findings confirm that Latinos are less likely to be asked to volunteer when compared to other groups.

▼ The purpose of this qualitative study is to understand the educational experiences of a group of high-achieving American Indian students within the context of the
social, political, and economic lifeworld in which they live. Despite strong community value of the importance of obtaining an education, American Indian students struggle to succeed academically, and have the lowest high school graduation rates in the United States (Brayboy, Fann, Castagno, & Solyom, 2012). It is important to understand how students from culturally, socially, and economically deprived communities are able to navigate systems of
exclusion in order to improve access and opportunity within the education system. This study aims to discover how these populations of high-achieving students are able to navigate and overcome barriers of
social exclusion that obstruct a large majority of American Indian students.

▼ Nuorten syrjäytyminen on saanut osakseen runsaasti huomiota Suomessa viimeisen parin vuoden aikana. Nuorten syrjäytymisen ehkäiseminen on nostettu muun muassa yhdeksi Jyrki Kataisen hallituksen kärkihankkeeksi.
Tutkimuksessa on käytetty vuoden 2012 nuorisobarometria.
Tutkimuksesta nousee selkeästi esiin lapsuuden ajan liikuntaharrastuksen positiivinen merkitys.
Tutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat, että nuorten syrjäytyminen on todellinen huolenaihe yhteiskunnassamme. Nuorten syrjäytymisen ehkäisyyn tulisi panostaa entistä enemmän tulevina vuosina ja erityisesti ylisukupolvisen syrjäytymiskierteen katkaisuun tulisi panostaa entistä enemmän.
Youth not in employment, education or training - secluded?
Youth social exclusion has gained a lot of attention in Finland in recent years.
Preventing social exclusion among young people forms one of the focus areas in the
current Government Programme. The term social exclusion is commonly used, yet it
poses a problem. Public conversation classifies young people without work or education
as socially excluded.
This study examines the term social exclusion and youth without work or education
more closely. Finland’s Youth policy and the implemented measures to prevent youth
social exclusion will also be acknowledged. The purpose of this study is to clarify the
social, health, economical and political status of the socially excluded young people in
Finland. It aims to find out the living conditions and subjective experiences about their
family during the years of comprehensive education. The data used in this study were

▼ Creating gender equality in situations of perceived
organization
exclusion-inclusion (OEI-the degree to which
individuals feel a part of critical organizational processes such
as access to information and influencing decision making processes)
is a critical
social and organizational justice concern (Mor Barak,
2011). Given the lack of understanding about gender differences in
OEI, this study investigated this issue, as well as, the
determinants of OEI, and the sources of gender differences in OEI
across multiple worksites in different countries. Job status, work-
and family-role investments, perception of work-family culture and
gender-role beliefs were hypothesized as the main determinants and
sources of gender differences in OEI. Data collected by the Sloan
Center on Aging and Work for the Generations of Talent Study (GOT)
in 2010-2011 were used to investigate the gender differences in
OEI. Bivariate statistics, multivariate fixed effects models, and
Blinder-Oaxaca regression decomposition analyses were used to test
the hypotheses. Findings suggest that women's sense of OEI is
significantly lower than that of men. This difference, although
smaller, remains statistically significant after accounting for job
status, work- and family-role investments, perception of
work-family culture, gender-role beliefs, worksite variances, and
control variables (age, race/ethnicity, optimism). Of these
factors, job status and work-role investment differences between
men and women are the greatest sources of the gender gap in OEI. No
support was found for the influence of gender differences in
family-role investments, gender-role beliefs, and perception of
work-family culture on the gender OEI gap. Finally, women's more
optimistic outlook on life, compared to men, attenuated the gender
OEI gap. Guided by these findings, potential policy and/or practice
interventions should be aimed at advancing greater gender equity in
job status and supporting women's work-role investments. However,
interventions aimed at changing women's work attitudes should not
promote conformity to gendered organizational norms. Future
research should aim to better understand the relationship between
contextual factors and gender differences in OEI, and to examine
the role of positive psychological characteristics (e.g. optimism)
in OEI and the consequences of gender differences in
OEI.

▼ Stereotype threat occurs when one may feel as if they are confirming or representing a selfcharacteristic or a negative stereotype of one’s group.
Social exclusion has been shown to threaten the need to belong. Both stereotype threat and
social exclusion have many common links: Each affects an individual’s self-views, feelings, and each impact one’s ability to focus cognitive faculties to perform well on cognitive tests. This thesis sought to explain how
social exclusion would increase the perceived threat on related tests of sociability. As such, participants were included or excluded during an online
social game, and then received an ordinary or diagnostic test of sociability. It was hypothesized that
social exclusion would have negative effects on reports of
social needs compared to the act of inclusion, and being excluded would influence performance on a measure of sociability. Results indicated support only for the
social needs. It was also hypothesized that diagnostic tests for sociability would produce more stereotype threat and reported stress than pilot tests. Results indicated marginal support for this second hypothesis. It was also suggested that the most threat would be seen for participants who were both excluded and given a diagnostic test as compared to participants who were not excluded or not given a diagnostic test. That hypothesis, however, was not supported. Implications for theoretical connections between
social exclusion and stereotype threat are discussed.

▼ Transport projects are complex; the interface with different policy areas can often lead to significant challenges to ensuring that long-term value outcomes are achieved. This thesis seeks to explore the challenges associated with the effective provision of transport services from a social exclusion perspective. It uncovers a number of key factors that can affect the successful delivery and provision of such schemes by examining the consequence of the decisions and actions taken by service providers and commissioners. Using a case study approach conducted on three local authority projects across the United Kingdom, the study is exploratory in nature through an in-depth qualitative data analysis. In order to address the aim of the thesis, six key objectives are defined: to understand how transport projects may act as a vehicle for delivering policy aimed at addressing social exclusion in the United Kingdom; to understand and investigate the impact of deregulation of the bus industry on the provision of transport services, particularly for the socially excluded; to critically examine the process underpinning decisions that guide the provision of transport schemes to address social exclusion; to examine the propensity for service users to be actively involved in the decision making process; to conduct a case study research in order to explore the challenges to the successful provision and delivery of the transport services to the socially excluded as a consequence of the decisions and actions taken by the service providers in the case study areas; and to characterise the factors that should be considered in the provision and delivery of transport services, particularly for the socially excluded.Semi structured interviews were carried out with the service providers in three locations– West Midlands, Sheffield, and Manchester. These interviews seek to determine the challenges to the effective provision and delivery of transport services as a consequence of the decisions and actions of the service providers. Overall, some challenges that could inhibit the provision and delivery of transport services were identified. These include constraint on the provision and delivery of transport services for the socially excluded due to the Competition Act, lack of accessible information, lack of close working relationship between service providers, lack of trust and mutual respect between service providers, too much focus in reducing the number of benefits claimant, service accessibility – inflexible access criteria, lack of support for bus drivers, lack of cultural diversity in the workforce and marketing of services, resource constraints on scheme performance, tendency on the service providers to focus getting output rather than outcomes, partnership issues - lack of commitment, poor communication, lack of common understanding of social exclusion, tendency on the service providers to focus on economic aspect, and lack of willingness to fully engage with citizens in the delivery and provision of transport services. These challenges…

▼ While the needs of women prisoners have received greater acknowledgement within corrective services and academic scholarship, the smaller group of incarcerated women with cognitive disabilities has not generated the same level of awareness. It is reasonable to conclude that in some respects, incarcerated women with cognitive disabilities share similar characteristics with their male counterparts, such as elevated rates of reoffending. However, the difference lies in the notably higher levels of mental illness and rates of abuse, often associated with susceptibility to coercion and poor adaptive skills. This group of women is also exposed to exclusionary processes, both in and out of prison, which may contribute to the cycle of offending. More broadly, the extant literature draws links between ‘
social exclusion’ and ‘incarceration’, but little is known about its impact on incarcerated women with cognitive disabilities. This study addresses this gap by providing unique insight into the role of
social exclusion in fostering and maintaining the process of ‘othering’, via stigmatisation that excludes those who are considered ‘different’. The study’s central argument is that cognitive disability and incarceration are key elements contributing to
social exclusion, and that this relationship is mutually reinforcing, in that
social exclusion perpetuates cycles of offending. The study has three key objectives: to examine how
social exclusion is a factor in pathways to prison, how
social exclusion manifests within the prison setting and finally, the capacity of prisons to respond to the needs of cognitively disabled women. To achieve these objectives, this research privileged the voices of incarcerated women with cognitive disabilities in three Australian states. Between August 2017 and April 2018, semi-structured interviews were conducted in four women’s prisons with all women with identifiable cognitive disabilities, as well as the prison practitioners tasked with their cases. The results reveal histories of trauma beginning in childhood, including physical and sexual abuse, foster care, juvenile detention, homelessness, familial suicide and dislocation from communities. The interviews also highlight the role of substance misuse and poor mental health, which often generate challenging behaviours in public spaces. Police interventions, signalling the initial step into the criminal justice system, and limited understanding of court processes contribute to the routine incarceration of this group of women. Cognitive disability is frequently a barrier to bail or parole, with police and court officials adhering to a widely held belief that a lack of capacity to either understand or adhere to bail/parole conditions will result in a breach of conditions. The prison itself contributes to pre-existing trauma via institutional protocols such as strip searches and isolation. In an environment premised on punishment, surveillance and containment, cognitively disabled women with complex needs are regularly placed in solitary confinement…

▼ Social exclusion has garnered much attention from researchers across the
social sciences, especially among
social psychologists. However, given the fact that
social relationships and consumption are two of the central activities in daily life, there is surprisingly little research on the impact of
social connection threats within the realm of consumer behavior. This study examines the effect of
social exclusion on proenvironmental behavior and green consumption. More precisely, the objectives of this study are threefold. The first objective is to examine whether the findings in
social psychology literature on how excluded individuals respond to
exclusion when they are exposed to proenvironmental consumption behavior. The second objective of this research is to find the underlying mechanism and to rule out some of the possible explanations (e.g., mood) for this effect. The final objective of this study is to establish some of the boundary conditions (individual differences and situational factors) for the proposed effect. The hypotheses of this study were developed based on two main theoretical bases borrowed from
social psychology literature: empathy-altruism hypothesis (Batson 1991) and
social reconnection hypothesis (Maner et al. 2007). Overall, it was proposed that while
social exclusion decreases individuals’ inclination to engage in proenvironmental activities, socially excluded people are motivated to use green consumption behaviors to establish new
social bonds with others. These propositions were tested and supported across four experiments. Across these experiments, the findings demonstrated that
social exclusion causes people to express lower tendency to engage in proenvironmental behaviors. The findings also consistently suggest that mood does not explain why
social rejection leads to negative environmental outcomes. Additionally,
social exclusion appears to cause a temporary absence of empathic concern toward others, which leads to less green behavior with altruistic motivation. Further, the role of emotional empathy as a boundary condition was tested in this study and the findings indicate that experiencing
social exclusion does not negatively impact proenvironmental behavior in highly empathetic individuals. Finally, this investigation showed that when a proenvironmental behavior is perceived as an opportunity to reconnect and positive
social feedback is expected from peers, socially excluded participants favor products that signal to their peers that they too are concerned about environmental issues. In addition to its contributions to consumer research and marketing, this work provides several practical implications. For instance, as established in this study, green products by default are not perceived by excluded individuals as tools that facilitate
social reconnection. However, when such products are positioned properly, such individuals tend to capitalize on the
social acceptability of their behavior to help them fulfill their threatened need for affiliation. The implication here is that marketers…

▼ Past research shows that social exclusion leads to a host of difficulties in self-control. The present study examined the neural correlates of this effect using magneto-encephalography (MEG). Participants were placed in either a social
exclusion (n=15) or control condition (n=15) and received computer-administered feedback Next, a self-control task consisting of 180 moderately difficult math problems was presented to subjects while measuring the speed with which they identified a
supplied answer as correct or incorrect while collecting MEG data. In response to the self control task, socially excluded participants showed greater activity in left lateral prefrontal and medial superior parietal cortex. When presented with the
answers to the math problems, socially excluded participants showed lesser activity in medial inferior parietal cortex, which was associated with slower response times in answering the math problems. These results suggest that the self-control deficits
from social exclusion are related to an imbalance between executive control of attention during the task and maintenance of important information and provisions for attention during responses.

▼ The thesis aims to identify causal pathways which exist between poverty, social exclusion and the Northern Ireland conflict. This subject is approached through a case study focus on the modern day inner-city area of Belfast. The evidence reviewed is quantitative and qualitative, spanning a period from around the 1798 United Irishmen Rebellion to the early 2010s. The thesis asks how poverty, social exclusion and the Northern Ireland conflict were connected throughout the violent conflict period of 1968-1998, and how this changed following the 1998 Good Friday Belfast Agreement. The period from around 1798 to 1968 is reviewed to identify causal pathways which may exist; pathways which are then analysed for the 1968-1998 period and the post-1998 period by utilising empirical data from the ‘Conflict Archive on the Internet’ archive at https://cain.ulster.ac.uk and the study ‘Lost Lives: The Stories of the Men, Women and Children who Died as a Result of the Northern Ireland Troubles’ (McKittrick et al, 2006 edition), along with the 2001 and 2010 Northern Ireland Indices of Multiple Deprivation (NIIMD), and the 2001 and 2011 UK censuses. ‘Lost Lives’ estimated that 3,720 people were killed as a result of the Northern Ireland conflict between 1966 and 2006, of which 3,635 were killed from 1969 to 1998. Following this, five principal causal pathways are identified as follows: urban development and conflict; grievances and dysfunctional governance; globalisation and the workplace; paramilitarism and political exclusion; and, locked-in segregation and deprivation. Within each there are sub-pathways which demonstrate the relationships between poverty, social exclusion and the Northern Ireland conflict.

▼ The present study aimed to expand upon previous
research to determine if inducing
social exclusion in individuals
mediates humor style among the Dark Triad personality traits. The
study utilized a repeated measures design in which 170 participants
completed self-report measures of humor style, psychopathy,
narcissism, and Machiavellianism prior to receiving bogus feedback
about their futures; participants then completed a second measure
of humor styles. One condition of feedback was specifically
designed to induce feelings of
social exclusion. Multiple
regression analyses revealed that the future conditions in the
study had no effect on participant’s humor styles, but
relationships between the Dark Triad and humor styles were found.
The Dark Triad traits were significant predictors of an aggressive
humor style in participants, as predicted. Psychopathy was also a
predictor of self-defeating humor as expected, while
Machiavellianism was not a predictor of self-defeating. Future
research that addresses the limitations of the current study is
necessary to further the understanding of how
social exclusion
influences the humor style of those with Dark Triad
personalities.

▼ This thesis demonstrates how microfinance programs influence the capabilities of participants. It does so by addressing two subsidiary questions: what are the impacts of microfinance programs and how do microfinance programs foster these impacts? Microfinance is becoming a global phenomenon. However, in spite of this growth, there has been little in the way of research to try to understand the impacts of the programs in a multidimensional way, especially in Australia. This thesis uses frameworks of social and financial exclusion and Sen’s capability approach to understand the impacts of microfinance programs on participants. Social and financial exclusion provide a multidimensional approach to addressing issues of disadvantage for low-income households. The capability approach is also multidimensional and focuses on three main areas: what a person values, what a person has the capability to achieve (which includes the freedom and choice they have to achieve the things they value) and a sense of agency. Qualitative interviews and participant observation were used for data collection, as individual experiences and narratives were central to the study. Participant observation provided a contextualised understanding of the lives of participants, which allowed for a greater depth of understanding and analysis. The research found that the impact of microfinance was threefold: the impact on financial elements for participants, impact on the social dimensions in the participants’ lives and the development of enhanced capabilities. In reference to the financial impacts, participants spoke of four main areas: increased levels of savings, increased financial capability, increased financial security and greater levels of economic participation. These impacts were brought about through a combination of the financial aspects of the programs as well as through social aspects such as the provision of support networks. The impacts on the social dimensions of the microfinance programs were primarily a result of participation in the savings and loans circles and the Enterprising Women program. These programs provided avenues for social interaction among participants. The social impacts that participants experienced were increased levels of support, greater trust, feelings of reciprocity and a sense of belonging. These impacts are all highly interconnected as they relate to the social networks that can form when people meet, thus increasing social capital. What was discovered was that a combination of the financial and social elements led to an enhanced sense of capability for participants. People spoke of greater freedom, empowerment and confidence, sense of equality, well-being and sense of achievement. One of the main implications of this research is that if programs are to truly improve the capabilities of low-income individuals and families, then they need to provide both financial services and avenues for people to interact with one another. It is a combination of both these services that leads to the enhancement of…

▼ Child poverty in Sweden as a social phenomenon has been highlighted in various debates and in poverty research during the recent years. Children's economic vulnerability has gotten more place in research. An interest to highlight child poverty awakened and this study highlights child poverty through a resource perspective among children in preschools. This study aims to examine how preschool teachers perceive the child's assets to various resources as well as how preschool teachers perceive the impact of the preschool where they work on children's access to these resources. The study is qualitative and has used interviews as a tool. The respondents' answers were analyzed using previous research, and Pierre Bourdieu's theoretical concepts capital, field and habitus as analytical tools. Four preschool teachers in two different preschools in the area Norsborg were interviewed. The results show that preschool teachers perceive that there are differences between children in access to different resources. Some lacks in resource assets has proven to be clearer than others, such as children's clothing. However, the causes of children's access to various resources have been harder to understand. Another result of this study is that preschools in various ways contribute to children's different resource assets by example that all activities that kids do with preschools will be free for children and their parents. Another way for preschools that affect children's access to resources is the way preschools informs the children’s parents about different activities. But there are also differences between the preschools where one of the preschools in this study allows kids to bring their own toys from home, which can contribute to resource differences between the children in the preschool.

In an approach of qualitative sociology, this research work aims to apprehend a phenomenon that is now well established in public debate, even though it still arouses reluctance to its own academic world : that of social exclusion. It is on the basis of the analysis of Parisian associative devices that are part of the fight against exclusion that this investigation is aimed at the elaboration of the said phenomenon as a social fact in its epistemological and theoretical dimensions. From this perspective, exclusion then appears as a reality which, within any society, contributes to the conception of the experience of a normal social life that sociology, like the social sciences, can advantageously reproduce in a typological form to take into account both the variety of types of society and their historical transformation. In doing so, the sociologist is thus led to adopt a processual approach to exclusion.

▼ My big interest in sports was what shaped my choice of subject for the essay. The purpose of this study has been to explore the social meaning of team sports for functionally impaired persons. In order to fulfil the purpose of the essay I formed following questions: How do the actives experience their participation in team sports? And how important is the social intercourse in team sports to the individual welfare? The methods I’ve used have been qualitative with an ethnographic approach. I have used participant observations and field interviews to gather my empirical material. To analyze this material I have used theoretical concepts such as: group membership, social skills, social interaction, social inclusion and social exclusion. In this essay I have found out that team sports promotes people’s social skills. Therefore team sports are, according to my studies, a beneficial form of social work.

Welfare economics in a behavioral world is gaining increasing traction for research in economics and social sciences at large. Especially the last three decades, ever more research efforts have been directed to understand welfare better. Social capital has been one of the prime candidates and now a domain of research. Research is undertaken to understand its importance, how it operates, and what impact it has on the well-being of an individual and the health of a society. The capabilities approach developed by Amartya Sen highlights the fundamental role of economic development that focuses on the improving individual capabilities and expanding choice sets of each individual. However, this capability approach is individual-centric and inadvertently leaves out the shared or the collective nature of an individual’s existence. The social networks/interconnectedness is not addressed in the capability approach of Sen. At the same time, the social networks embody the mobilization of individuals in groups, association, and civic action. This aspect is developed by Giraud et al. (2013), called the relational capability approach. Another major research domain that cannot be neglected in the economic or human development evaluation is happiness (or subjective well-being). The concept of subject well-being is closely related to the social capital domain. In the literature, these concepts of social capital, relational capabilities, subjective well-being…

The social manifestations of the gypsy population of Trás-os-Montes are an evidence of how heterogeneous that group is in Portugal. The gypsies from Trás-os-Montes present relevant differences to other gypsy populations, regardless if they reside in the Bragança region or other parts of the country. Both groups agree with the existence of those differences.
Moreover, gypsy populations from other regions of Portugal label the Trás-os-Montes gypsies as “Chabotos”. In contrast, gypsies from Trás-os-Montes refer to other Portuguese gypsies as “Gitanos”. All groups self-name themselves as “gypsies”.
Qualitative research was adopted in this thesis providing a better understanding of the behaviour of observed individuals in their living environment. The fieldwork was situated in the Bragança area, including rural and urban contexts. In the urban area it included three neighbourhoods, in the rural area it included six villages.
Furthermore to investigations about the gypsies of Trás-os-Montes standard of life in rural and urban areas, studies were extended onto inter-ethnical relations as well as with the local populations, including school environment.
Urban gypsies of Trás-os-Montes live with segregation. This is apparent when considering their housing…

The conclusion was that the studied group has a worse perception of family relationship when it comes to support in school tasks than the control group (p=0,009). What anxious/ ambivalent attachment is concerned this group also showed higher values (p=0,035). If we consider the different genders, it was possible to observe that the girls of the studied group think themselves to be more autonomous than the boys (p=0,047) and that they have a higher perception of their future expectations (p=0,026). The girls from the control group are more secure than the boys (p=0,005). Based on the dwelling place one could conclude that the sample of youngsters endangered by…

The present study approaches the foundation in 1922 and the history of a club for black people, which was located in an area occupied by German descendants in the city of Novo Hamburgo, in the Vale do Rio dos Sinos, RS. The club named Cruzeiro do Sul originated from a social and collective project for the organization of a space for social integration of black people. Its historical construction is permeated by discussions about racial democracy, as well as the organization of strategies and fellowships that went beyond the limits of Novo Hamburgo. The association of those involved was the way to oppose the social exclusion in a scenario well known for being historically of Germanic culture. Thus, the Associação Esportiva, Cultural, Beneficente Sociedade Cruzeiro do Sul is analyzed as a path breaker of African descent association in the Vale do Sinos region. The historical path trailed by the association translates the union for common interests, grounded on ethnic identity and solidarity as opposed to the social adversities of the time.
