▼ This study focuses on the conceptualization of video evidence as constructed by judges in their written decisions in Canadian criminal courts and the impact this conceptualization has on understandings of truth. Recent years have seen substantial developments in video recording technology and in the cultural practices that support its use. Of particular interest to this study is the mobilization of video as a means of legitimizing truth claims. Using a qualitative content analysis of 52 recent (2005-2015) Canadian criminal court decisions, this study seeks to understand the way in which judges discuss video evidence in their decisions and the impact these discussions have on discourses of truth. The results of this analysis illustrate that the features typically associated with video evidence coincide closely with specific and longstanding discourses of objectivity, reliability, and credibility that are used to evaluate competing claims in criminal courts—discourses that have traditionally been developed with reference to evaluating testimony. Judges’ adoption of these particular criteria over any others results in video achieving an eminent position in the hierarchy of evidence before the courts. The way in which judges conceptualize video evidence both reflects the historic discourses that shape the current judicial approach to video evidence and (re)creates discourses that will be relied on in future. Given the influential role of courts as official arbiters of truth, the discourses adopted by judges have important implications both within and beyond the legal system.

▼ Since the Brundtland report (1987) the term sustainable development appears in almost every governmental report. The concept has even been widely integrated in the business markets for commercialisation purposes. Yet the social sustainability dimension is still finding its way to be fully recognised and operationalised as equal as environmental and economic dimensions. In the field of construction management, this dimension is clearly lagging behind due to the nature of the construction industry. Despite of the poor social sustainability performance of construction industry, it has great capabilities to be enhanced to contribute to the overall sustainable development. Therefore, some initiatives aim to fill this gap such as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). However, they are not fully compatible with the nature of construction project as it is realised through temporary multi-organisation and has widely differing stakeholders. Hence, the output of this research aims to allow the realisation of the social sustainability performance of construction within project context.
To achieve that, Social Sustainability Health Check (SSHC) tool was developed utilising a stakeholder approach which allows the realisation of intangible social values. Thus, descriptive study was conducted to identify the construction stakeholders and their social sustainability interests in relation to construction projects. A total of 400 questionnaire surveys targeting three stakeholders communities namely, industry, users, and neighbourhood, were disseminated. Using descriptive analysis and Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), the underlying factors of construction project that contribute to the social sustainability of the stakeholders were defined. These were aligned to synthesise seven social core functions (SCFs) namely, economic performance, health and physical comfort, accessibility, integration, usability, psychological comfort, and occupational health and safety.
The SCFs and the stakeholders’ communities were mapped in a network system using Social Network Analysis (SNA) to allow the integration of the differing interests of construction stakeholders. The linkages between the SCFs and the stakeholders represent their social expectations and interests in the project. The assessment of the SCFs performances were operationalised through developing checklists. Hence, the SSHC model was operationalised by developing mathematical model, employing SNA, and checklists which allow the systematic quantification of the social sustainability contributions.
Using an explanatory case study method, the applicability and usability of the SSHC model were validated. The model was applied into two regeneration construction projects in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia that have the aim to deliver social sustainability values to stakeholders. The results of the case studies investigation showed the model capabilities to recognise and respond to the different project performances, stakeholders’ interests, and…

▼ In the 21st century, millions of older adults in the
United States are coming out of retirement to work. In some cases,
inadequate benefits and savings force them out of retirement,
especially when they or their spouses experience costly health
problems. In other cases, older workers “unretire” after losing
loved ones, or as they experience
social loss and disengagement.
These older workers seek companionship through work. Although many
older workers enjoy aspects of the jobs they attain in
unretirement, their compensation is often insufficient, forcing
some of them to perpetually delay re-retiring. Such unretirement
reverses decades of movement toward greater and earlier retirement
for older adults and significantly affects cultural meanings of old
age. Focusing on six different worksites in Kansas, I examine how
older workers and employers socially and culturally re-construct
age. Evidence from ethnographic observation and thirty-three
in-depth interviews with older workers and their employers suggest
that employers view older workers’ agedness as an asset they can
exploit to cut costs and boost profits. In sharp contrast, many
older employees’ younger co-workers and clients treat them as if
agedness diminishes their competence and relevance in the
workplace. This is particularly true for women, who struggle more
than their male colleagues to fend off the negative labels some
younger co-workers and clients attempt to apply to them.
Ultimately, I find that old age is a valued human resource for
employers, making older employees “ideal workers,” but the
cumulative effects of older workers’ interactions in the workplaces
tend, on balance, to devalue older age. Notably, the forces that
promoted positive constructions of older age tend to be rooted in
exploitation. Employers who idealize older workers do so to squeeze
as much unpaid labor power out of them as possible. When older
workers resist exploitative work assignments, they often become
subject to negative labeling, as opposed to other kinds of “problem
worker” labeling that younger workers might face. By specifying the
mechanisms that produce harmful versus helpful constructions of age
at work in traditional retirement years, my study contributes to
the growing body of research on the relatively new phenomenon of
unretirement in the United States.

▼ Global disaster reports continue to present a disturbing steady growth in the frequency and magnitude of disasters. The same reports also tell of escalating disaster effects and impacts on the myriad of at-risk communities. Despite the avalanche of these concerning reports, both literature and practitioner field views bemoan the current disconnect between upper (global and national) level disaster risk reduction (DRR) rhetoric and abysmal support to local level DRR action. This study recognizes therefore that while there is a growing worldwide interest in DRR, poor local capacity for DRR remains probably the biggest impediment to speeding up required global DRR progress. The study also recognizes that community capacity building for disaster risk reduction (CCB4DRR) is a pivotal enabler to local DRR with knock-on effects to global DRR progression. In order to accelerate global DRRprogress therefore, it is imperative to challenge the current state of key stakeholder prioritization and support for community capacity building for disaster risk reduction (CCB4DRR). The study adopts case study research strategy and uses interviews, document reviews and observations to investigate the state of CCB4DRR within 6 INGO and donor case studies in Kenya. In addition, the study identifies factors behind one of Kenya's most successful CCB4DRR initiative – Yatta's Operation Mwolyo Out (OMO). The analysis of case study data reveals that while there's an overall general understanding of the importance of supporting local DRR action, support to CCB4DRR is at varying degrees within the 6 INGO and donor case studies. The analysis of factors behind OMO's great success reveals how it is one thing for DRR stakeholders to understand the importance of prioritising and supporting CCB4DRR and yet another for the same stakeholders to grasp how to practically get it right. This is the reason one case donor reflected, "I think we are still very limited in the understanding of DRR and how to translate it into the practical things." The study adds nuance to our understanding of the present state of CCB4DRR in Kenya. It also underscores the importance of donors being intentional at providing informed guidelines on how funds allocated to government Disaster Risk Management (DRM) agencies should be prioritized between different DRM activities. The study recommends that donor guidance to respective partners should emphasize the need for targeting larger amounts of allocated funds to resilience-building DRR activities versus the on-going practice of allocating more to emergency preparedness and response. Probably the most important output of the study is the proposed conceptual framework aimed at helping DRR stakeholders in the country understand which critical pieces of information are required for them to be able to make informed in-country DRR choices.

▼ Professional organizations are currently facing a phenomenon that has not been experienced or seen before. As the economy remains fragile and the cost of living continues to rise, a greater number of students are entering the workforce while working to complete their college degrees, and the more seasoned professionals are working well past what has traditionally been called the "retirement years." Due to this increasing number of the young and old entering the workforce, four generations are now working side by side on a daily basis, and this is leaving many professional organizations to wonder "How do we manage, motivate, and communicate with four increasingly diverse age groups?" Interviews were conducted and participant observations took place within one professional Colorado organization to gain a better understanding of how multiple generations working within one company communicatively construct and perform their generational identities. Through the interview and observation data, six themes emerged illuminating both similar and diverse ways as to how the four generations prefer to communicate and interact in the workplace. In this study the meanings of these themes are discussed in order to shed light on the consequences, both positive and negative, of having four generations working together every day.

▼ In this thesis I argue that the category of emotion
is a
social natural kind and that this claim has implications for
the scientific study of emotion. It is a
social kind because it
includes
social features that are necessary for the explanation of
emotional phenomena. It is a natural kind because it is a stable
property cluster which shows an aptness for successful induction
and explanation. In chapter 1 I introduce the main views on natural
kinds in affective science. I present three different views to
claim that all three rely heavily on an influential psychological
theory, namely Basic Emotion Theory. I claim that the natural kind
status of several affective phenomena is not exclusively a
metaphysical or philosophical issue and show its implications for
interpreting experimental data and designing experiments. This
thesis is divided in two parts. Part A (chapters 2 and 3) deals
with the metaphysics of natural kinds and
social kinds. In chapter
2 I outline and reject the traditional view of natural kinds
(essentialism) in favour of an epistemological view where natural
kinds are property clusters showing an aptness for successful
induction and explanation of the phenomena included in them. The
epistemological view I endorse has similarities with accounts
proposed by Boyd (1991) or Khalidi (2013), however, is primarily
based on Slater’s (2015) Stable Property Cluster account. I argue
that Slater’s account is a plausible account of natural kinds and
has advantages over other available accounts in the literature. In
chapter 3 I argue that we should reject the claim that
social kinds
cannot be considered natural kinds (or useful scientific
categories) because they can be
subject to heterogeneous
construction, and because they are associated with interactivity
and normativity features. I argue that in some cases, heterogeneous
construction, interactivity between the clustered properties and
the environment or normativity factors, do not necessarily entail
that the
social kind will not show an aptness for successful
induction and explanation. I use the example of gender categories
to argue that such
social kinds can be stable property clusters and
show an aptness for successful induction and explanation. Part B
(chapters 4 and 5) applies the account defended in the first part
to affective phenomena and more specifically to the category of
emotion. In chapter 4 I claim that emotion is not a neurobiological
kind but a
social kind; its properties cannot be reduced to
neurobiological properties or neurobiological states. I argue that
most of the main views presented in chapter 1 rely on BET according
to which emotion is a neurobiological kind. I present evidence
against this theory and argue that it should not be relied upon to
determine the natural kind status of the category of emotion
because it oversimplifies, and does not provide a good explanation
of, emotional phenomena. In chapter 5 I argue that emotion is a
social kind because it relates to phenomena which are best
investigated by looking at several domains in…

▼ Dissertação de Mestrado em Negócios Internacionais apresentada à ESTG - Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Gestão do Instituto Politécnico de Leiria.
The main objective of this dissertation is to analyze the effects of ethical behavior on a
firm’s financial profitability. Corporate social responsibility has been used as an indicator
of ethical performance. After analyzing the financial indicators ROA and PM, from a
sample of the twenty biggest civil construction companies in Portugal, between 2007 and
2011, we conclude that ROA is significantly related to a firm’s ethical performance.
However, we did not find any statistical evidence that relates PM to ethical performance.
Although the scores are very low on all CSR indexes, we can conclude that companies,
who are exporting, seem to be more concerned with environmental issue than ethical
issues. The top management in the civil construction should take a deeper look into their
CSR activities, and should not neglect the impact social inactivity may have on their
financial performance. Although, there are some examples to look up to, there is still a
long way to go for the majority of companies in this industry. Limitations and
recommendations for future research are provided at the end of this dissertation.

The analysis of case study data reveals that while there’s an overall general understanding of the importance of supporting local DRR action, support to CCB4DRR is at varying degrees within the 6 INGO and donor case studies. The analysis of factors behind OMO’s great success reveals how it is one thing for DRR stakeholders to understand the importance of prioritising and supporting CCB4DRR and yet another for the same stakeholders to grasp how to practically get it right. This is the reason one case donor reflected, “I think we are still very limited in the understanding of DRR and how to translate it into the practical things.”
The study adds nuance to our understanding of the present state of CCB4DRR in Kenya.

▼ Effective teams are created with a mission in mind of members collaborating with each other through trust and communication. The
Social Network Model of engineering and
construction was developed using a dual-focused approach to enhancing professional trust and communications in creating highly effective organizations. This research investigated applications of
social network analysis to engineering and design firms using graphics and statistical methods to analyze the organization and team effectiveness. After I conducted an on-line survey for firms that met certain criteria, I analyzed their networks and made recommendations on how to improve their communications with each other to help them improve on their effectiveness. I analyzed their data using statistical methods such as basic statistics and exponential random graph models that can explain formation of the observed networks.
Social network analysis can be used to measure their effectiveness and is intended to visualize communication, reliance and trust in each other and assess knowledge exchange, with the assumption that improvements in these variables will help to achieve high performance.

▼ Using data collected from 30 face-to-face interviews with individuals who were, at the time, listed on the Illinois Sex Offender Registry, this study examines how individuals with a concealable (hidden) stigma navigate a daily existence interacting with others who know, others who do not know, and others who may or may not know about the individual’s stigmatized status of being listed on the registry. The experiences of those who were interviewed is contextualized by examining the socially-constructed nature of the category of “sex offender” as well as the
social context of legislation, litigation, academic response, and advocacy organizations related to public sex offender registries. The interviews highlight the difficulties faced by those on the registry as they decide whether or not to disclose their status, and if so, to whom, when, where, and how. Various reasons for disclosure are discussed and juxtaposed to studies of other stigmatized groups. Next, the interview data reveal the obdurate persistence of the stigma of being on such a registry and how the stigma encroaches on nearly every aspect of an individual’s life. Finally, this study considers alternates to public shaming tools like public registries. These alternatives include restorative justice, law enforcement only registries, and Circles of Support and Accountability (COSAs).

▼ This thesis explores how notions of ability are socially constructed, defined and experienced within physical education (PE). Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts are used to examine the processes through an acknowledgement and consideration of the culture where pupils’ and teachers’ notions of ability are configured, reconfigured, and experienced. The study covered one academic school year in a North London mixed comprehensive school. Fifteen pupils participated in focus groups and individual interviews. The pupils were a mixture of boys (11) and girls (4), a range of abilities and ages (11 – 16 years old), and experienced PE predominantly in ability groups. In addition, six PE teachers were interviewed and PE lesson observations were conducted throughout the study. The findings identify various processes and interactions between individuals and also between individuals and the field that contribute towards the social construction of ability in PE. The findings highlight the complex and dynamic nature of the PE experience where notions of ability and the related practices have a bearing. Hierarchical ability-based practices were apparent that served to reinforce dominant notions of ability but there were other practices that could potentially challenge ‘legitimate’ notions of ability. The study highlights some of the constraints that teachers face in their attempts to integrate broader notions of ability, especially within a performative culture. Variations across the individual experience highlight considerations for pupils in terms of becoming physically literate and reaching their potential. The study aims to raise key questions for stakeholders in considering how ability-based practices work in facilitating a learning environment that supports all levels of ability and preparing all young people for lifelong activity. In addition it stresses the need for greater agreement amongst stakeholders on the purpose of PE in the current climate and suggests that a review of the aims of PE is warranted.

▼ This study explores how fathers exist within socially constructed micro and macro systems and are positioned within a discourse on gendered masculinity. Seven fathers from the Nanaimo, B.C. region volunteered to participate in two focus groups, to discuss “what makes a father”. An exploration of the men’s lived experiences reflected on memories from childhood that influenced choices they make in fatherhood. Through generative exchanges and personal narratives subjective and evolved perspectives on gender binaries, masculine stereotypes and traditional belief systems were articulated. The compilation and analysis of data attempts to disrupt preconceived notions of masculinity in the 21st century. Based on the focus group data the study reveals roles that challenge traditional paternal archetypes relevant to parental relationships and demonstrates that contemporary fathers continue to evolve and navigate what is being referred to as “new” fatherhood. The study contributes to the research on fathers as an exclusive research
subject and their understanding of fatherhood in their own terms. The fathers in this study are challenging antiquated belief systems of how men are supposed to be within the structures of gendered masculinity. The study indicates there is no one-way or right way to be a dad and the curiosity and a conscious effort to trouble heteronormative archetypes by the participants indicates that men create space to chose to father according to their subjective experiences.

▼ Hoarding has been estimated to affect 2 to 5 percent of the population. There are
considerable health and safety implications for those who hoard, others living with them, and for
the community. For this reason, public health inspectors (PHIs) respond to situations involving
vulnerable individuals living in these potentially adverse housing situations. Earlier research
found that PHIs responding to these housing health hazards face many challenges in the
remediation of these conditions including client health, structural factors, and policy issues. The purpose of this case study, approached from a social constructionist perspective, is to
further explore the challenges in remediation of compromised housing health hazards in hoarding
situations. The study included PHI’s documented reports of 40 cases referred to them between
2013 and 2015 as well as field observations and semi-structured interviews with an individual
who hoards, his family, members of agencies involved with this case, and PHIs who respond to
hoarding cases. This data is part of a larger two-year case study examining an Environmental
Health Division’s response to housing health hazards in vulnerable populations. There were significant challenges in the remediation of hoarding. Client factors such as
advancing age, infirmity, living alone, and lack of formal and informal supports hampered
resolution of cases as did lack of training for PHIs about hoarding and its psychological
ramifications. The lack of coordination of services within the City of Greater Sudbury, the
magnitude of the cleanup required, and the chronic nature of hoarding also posed difficulties.
The creation of a coalition to provide a more comprehensive response to hoarding is required to
support this vulnerable population.

▼ peer-reviewed
This thesis contributes to our understanding of the social reproduction of human bodies.
Where in looking beyond the body’s role as “a mere input mechanism for informations
that the brain then makes sense of” this thesis argues “the body can itself be the site of
inquiry” (Khan 2011, p.116). From this perspective, the body is recognised as “a social
entity on which social beliefs, social values and social practices are inscribed” (Gard &
Wright 2005, p.175). In doing so, this thesis reveals how ‘the management and
development of the body is central in its own right to the production of cultural and
economic capital and the attainment and maintenance of status” (Shilling 1992, p.3).
Consequently, as an important site for the acquisition of bodily dispositions, this thesis
recognises the important role the school one attends plays in determining much of an
individual’s future, with the cultural preferences within different schools having the
potential to produce bodies of differing value. Yet while there is some awareness of the
manner in which the dominant classes manipulate the distribution of cognitive
knowledge, the role corporeal knowledge plays, is not acknowledged or understood.
While academic advantages (like smaller class sizes, or private tuition) are
acknowledged as impacting on academic results (Lynch 1989; Lynch and Lodge 2002;
Smyth 2008; Smyth and Hannon 2007; Butler 2009) and thus on future careers,
advantages in corporeal terms are not considered of any major or lasting significance. A
lack of appreciation, that I would argue is at least partly attributable to “the mechanisms
by which these advantages are transmitted” being “imperfectly understood” (Lareau
2002, p.747), a situation which is clearly exacerbated by cognitive knowledge being
“fairly easy to disseminate and to display,” while corporeal knowledge remains a much
more ill-defined, nebulous concept (Khan 2011, p.64).
Elite schools, long recognised as key institutions for the transmission of a range of
social advantages, also excel at the transmission of corporeal knowledge. In fact, it can
be argued that much of the ability of dominant groups to define their bodies and
lifestyles as superior can be attributed to the emphasis elite schools place on developing
physical capital in their students (Light & Kirk 2001). For this reason, I would argue
that to truly understand the reproduction of privilege, greater attention must be paid to
elites corporeal disciplining (Khan 2011). Thus, this thesis seeks to demonstrate how
through the transmission of corporeal knowledge and more specifically, the physical
curriculum in elite schools, privileged groups develop particular bodily dispositions and
particular views of their bodies which serve to reinforce their class positions.
Demonstrating how physical capital (in the form of body dispositions) is socially
produced through a series of cultural processes, this thesis reveals the strong
relationship between elite education and the social production of…

▼ This project explores the role of reading process(es) in the college composition
classroom. It seeks to present college composition students and teachers with useful reading as well as writing strategies that might benefit both as they engage in activities in the classroom. This project focuses on reading processes as a way to guide students and teachers in discussing how authors develop the content, structure, and organization of texts. The author chose a
social constructivist theoretical framework to stimulate both students and instructors to build a unique response to texts. Relying on a variety of scholars whose focus was to discuss practical applications of reading processes, the author developed advice that foregrounded the value of critical reading and writing skills and the ability to track the individual reader???s and writer???s progress in the classroom. Knowing how to read well might pave the way not just for helping students become better critical readers but more importantly critical writers.

The purpose of this ethnographic study was to gain deeper knowledge of how dog owners interact with their dogs and how they ascribe gender roles on their dogs in social interaction. The study was based on participant observation with dog owners and their dogs when they visited a dog resting area in a medium sized city in Sweden. The study was conducted with a symbolic interactionist perspective, and from a social constructivist gender perspective, which states that the individual is created through social interactions. The results showed that many dog owners have expectations for how their dogs should behave according to human gender roles. It was more accepted that a female dog displayed a stereotypical male behavior than a male displaying stereotypically feminine behaviors. The female dog owners tended to treat their dogs like children, while men tended to treat the dogs as their friends and displayed a more stoic relationship to the dogs. The study also showed that dog owners happily describe their dogs in gendered terms, which are based on human perceptions. The analysis concentrates on the interplay between dog owners and their dogs to increase understanding of how dog owners ascribe gender roles to their dogs.

This thesis aims to contribute to research aimed at identifying the conditions to sustainably prevent musculoskeletal and psychosocial disorders in companies. We brought into question how to create the conditions for the mobilization of stakeholders within an establishment, a factor for effective interventions, in order to enable the social construction of the prevention of musculoskeletal and psycho-social disorders. To do this, we followed the deployment of professional risk prevention approach in health care called ORSOSA. We qualitatively analyzed the activity of players backgrounds and different hierarchical levels during the deployment of a primary prevention approach. Our results suggest four categories of conditions for the mobilization of stakeholders when deploying a preventive approach: the organizational context, the strategies used by the practitioner, the link made by the internal stakeholders between their individual activity and gait implementation and finally the development of collective activity. The contribution of this thesis is to offer both a new methodology as well as a renewed overview to better mobilize stakeholders as early as possible when deploying a preventive approach, both to practitioners and researchers.

▼ In spite of the continuing decrease in accident rates in the US
Construction industry, accidents are one of the key factors constraining
construction industry in terms of cost and time. Fatality rates in the US are more than other developed countries. Research into accident causation included accident occurrence mechanisms, different levels and types of accident causes as and best practices for accident prevention. These efforts, however, did not focus particularly on fatal accidents and did not prioritize the relationships amongst root causes for accidents. Accordingly, this research’s goal is to quantitatively analyze relationships between fatal accident root causes as well how they are tied to direct causes commonly quoted in fatality investigations using
social network analysis (SNA).
Social network analysis is a set of tools derived from mathematical graph theory and utilized in several knowledge areas including
social sciences, natural sciences, engineering,
construction management and safety. Accordingly, a three-step methodology is devised. First, 100 case files are analyzed for accident causation data. Second, an SNA model is built utilizing the relationships between root causes and broken down according to direct causes. Third, model is analyzed, and results are interpreted and validated to provide insights into fatal accident causation and contributing underlying factors. The analysis of all
social networks yield that accident root causes interact very closely, and that only a few causes contribute most to fatality networks, a relationship which can be described by a power law. The model is capable of successfully identifying the most influential root causes for fatal accidents and their relationships. It identified “lack of job specific training” as the key cause for fatal accidents particularly for the direct causes “struck by” and “caught in between”. Moreover, SNA showed that this cause is most influential when combined with “absence of fall arrest system” and “lack of personal protection equipment”. Benefits of this research include providing a different approach to causation of fatal accidents that provides deeper more holistic insights into their root causes. Additionally, it provides a quantitative tool for prioritization of root causes which can guide implementation of Safety Management policies and practices.

▼ Relational and social behaviors of construction project team members explain team relationships. Whereas relational behaviors have often been studied in construction project team relationships, the current literature is deficient on the social behaviors. The literature review revealed seven relational behaviors (i.e., harmonization of conflict, propriety of means, restraint of power, reliance and expectation, contractual solidarity, flexibility, and reciprocity) and three social behaviors (i.e., past experience, benevolence, and integrity) commonly exhibited by construction project team members. Through a binomial logistic regression, research findings revealed that past experience was a significant (p < 0.01) predictor for five of the seven relational behaviors while benevolence and integrity were each significant (p < 0.01) predictors for three of the seven relational behaviors. Overall, out of the seven relational behaviors, only propriety of means is predicted by all the three social behaviors. Through multinomial regression, the results indicated that there is not enough evidence to show a relationship between the dimensions of relationship quality and project outcomes. However, there is a relationship between relationship embeddedness and project outcomes. Through internal and external validation, the prediction models performed well based on both positive predictive values and negative predictive values.
From a relationship management standpoint, this research introduces relational and social behaviors of team members as triggers of relationship embeddedness, and the potential influence on relationship quality and project outcomes. The results contribute to understanding the effect of social behaviors on the relational behaviors found in construction project teams where eleven statistically significant models that predict relational behaviors using the social behaviors were validated. The implication of this is that construction industry practitioners’ efforts to create a more relational team can use these prediction models in predicting the relational aspects of the team.

▼ The companies are part of an important segment of the society, besides, it exercises a significant contribution, being also responsible for helping in the improvement of the quality of life of the population. Like this being, to present research looked for to investigate the perception that the entrepreneurs of the building site of Aracaju/SE have concerning the theme Business
Social Responsibility (RSE). besides the perceptions, it was part also of the research, to know the entrepreneur's of the building site
social construction and the possible practices of
Social Responsibility. The research grew in two different moments. The first looked for the theoretical embasamento, trying to study the economical sociology, understanding the effects provoked by the economy, understanding to you reason them that you/they took to the appearance of the perceptions that you/they permeate the historicity among the market, the nascedouro of the associations as company and his/her dynamics in the society. It was also researched, the concept of
social responsibility in national and local extent, as well as, the contextualização of the state of Sergipe, detaching the municipal district of Aracaju, and describing how it happened his/her development starting from what is considered urbanization. In the second moment, the accomplishment of interviews in five companies, allowed to notice the entrepreneurs' perception concerning business
social responsibility, as well as, actions of different characteristics in four of the samples. In these actions, they are patronage in cultural events, donations of projects for charity institutions, the concern with the preservation of the environment in the use of work materials ecologically correct, preventive health and employees' training. Concluding the research, I introduce the conclusions which it allowed to arrive me, and I point some suggestions for future researches that enlarge the reflection on this theme

▼ Disease advocacy organizations are important political actors and knowledge producers. Since the late 1990s, colorectal cancer (CRC) advocacy organizations have emerged as part of a health
social movement focused on increasing awareness, support, and research for colorectal cancer. Despite the fact that colorectal cancer has the fourth highest incidence and mortality rate out of all cancer types in the U.S. (CDC, 2012), colorectal cancer remains marginal in analyses of cancer organizations. By applying a
social movement framing perspective to this understudied area of activism, I explore why the disproportionately high rates of colorectal cancer among African American men continue to remain neglected in disease advocacy circles. Drawing upon interviews with members of colorectal cancer advocacy organizations (n=9), I argue this neglect can be attributed to two processes: the
construction of movement frames that are more politically and culturally salient than empirically sound (or, more viable than valid) and framing of racial and gender differences in health as a result of individual behaviors and misconceptions rather than as a result of structural causes. While there has been limited research which examines exactly how frames are constructed (as opposed to how they are selected), this thesis has implications for how
social movement scholars study the
construction of frames. I argue that analyzing assumptions related to race, gender, and risk is an important tool for understanding how health
social movements construct their frames.

▼ Labour migration has been a phenomenon that has
been studied by different scholars for the last two centuries.
Classical economists regarded migration as a consequence of macro
economic factors such as cycles of expansion and contraction of the
economy or geographical concentration of means of production
leading to urbanization. The neo-classical approaches to
understanding labour migration use economic variables such as
differentials in wage, income and unemployment rate. The most
popular approach to the study of the phenomenon of labour migration
has been the quotPush-Pullquot framework of analysis. However,
labour migration is not merely an economic phenomenon. People, who
migrate in search of employment, do not do so for economic reasons
alone. There are social factors that influence migration decisions.
Besides, migrant workers have to build their social capital by
developing their social networks in order to survive and succeed in
the place of destination. These social networks of migrant labour
influence relationships in the labour markets of the place of
destination. Therefore, this research is an attempt to understand
the socio-economic processes involved in the phenomenon of labour
migration and its influence on labour markets of the place of
destination. This study is situated in the Indian context, where
uneven development in different parts of the country have resulted
in movement of people from less developed regions to more developed
regions. Therefore, this research is on domestic migration of
labour from one State to another. Being a prosperous small State on
the western coast of India, Goa has been considered an ideal
setting for this research as it has been attracting a large number
of migrant workers to fuel its high rate of economic growth.
Finally, the study focuses on the construction labour market since
the construction industry depends on large networks of contractors
and sub-contractors, who employ cheap migrant
labour.

The highlight reel and the real me: how adolescents construct the Facebook fable.

▼ Facebook is framed as a dangerous tool or at best, a colossal waste of time for adolescents. Stories of bullying, sexual exploitation, and adolescent idiocy dominate the mainstream and sociological narrative. Yet, there are few sociological studies of 13-18 year olds' social media experience. Available research on this age group is presented from the perspectives of adults or focused on college students. This dissertation seeks to address this gap in the literature by presenting the Facebook stories of 26 adolescents (13-18). It reveals a more contemplative and positive story of adolescent Facebook use than that described in the literature.
To capture their lived experience I developed a social media ethnography, including a survey, focus groups, observation of Facebook images, and follow up interviews. These data show that while adolescents spend considerable effort on their impression management work to "document us being awesome," they also want to present an authentic self. When this visual self presentation enters the public realm of Facebook it is altered by the awareness of an audience, and thus their authenticity is bounded by gendered social media rules that highlight masculinity/femininity. Simultaneously they also engage in significant back stage work to evaluate how this presentation aligns with the "real me now." Facebook provides a public space for this self reflection; it allows them to visualize the presentation of self and the feedback they receive on it. Over time these micro interactions and moments of self reflection work to constitute the evolving self.
This multi-method study offers media studies a new framework from which to consider the deeper meanings that adolescents make and take from social media. It presents an example of thoughtful decision making that may challenge brain development research indicating that adolescents struggle with impulse control. It also addresses a significant gap in the adolescent development literature by suggesting that work normally done internally to craft the self narrative now has a public presentation. Adolescents are forging a new path to development, and impressively they are taking control of social media technology to do so in a way that is both complicated and potentially helpful.

▼ There is a need for all stakeholders of building process to interact efficiently and effectively. However, this is not always possible due to the different knowledge background and complexity of building projects. Technologies transfer communication, leadership, democratic interaction, teamwork,
social engagement and responsibility away from the instructors to the participants. Implementing
social network-enabled communication can move design and production beyond its conventional realm and enables stakeholders to develop architectural, management and production knowledge that is embedded into a community of experts with their expertise both online and offline. Current media tools that are available need to be adopted and optimized to match the specific tasks of project delivery. The current single communication tools don’t allow the inclusion of all stakeholders and don’t support a
social and collaborative project environment. Communication management is a crucial knowledge area for Project Managers (PMs) who are expected to effectively and efficiently communicate the four constraints (Scope, Time, Cost, Quality) of a project to other stakeholders. This thesis explores the concept of using
social media (SM) for
construction project management (CPM) and in supporting collaboration within
construction project teams. This thesis employs the research methods of a Literature Review, Survey, and a Software Review to achieve this. The literature review identified that there was a knowledge gap regarding SM use by PMs. While
construction industry professionals recognised a need for SM, there were no strategies in place to capitalise on SM use. Current tools being used by
construction PMs as identified in this thesis include, web-based project management software (WPMS) and
Social Software/Groupware. Both tools are used to support core PM processes while also providing a collaborative electronic workspace on the Internet. The emergence of Project Management 2.0 (PM 2.0) and
Social Project Management (SPM) methodology/Software as a response to Web 2.0, has seen the adaptation of the
social networking (SN) and the ‘re-tweet’ paradigm in project communities. Currently there are SPM software available which is being largely used by PMs in the information technology (IT) industry. A Survey which was administered online to industry professionals, showed that survey respondents while dubious about the use of SM for project related work were interested in using software that integrated more SM-like features. The survey further identified that survey respondents were not aware of SPM software but that they were using some semblance of
Social software which were akin to SPM. The dissertation presented a review of current state-of-the-art SPM software and was also used to identify core PM features. In addition to this, ten SPM software were reviewed for features that were fundamentally Web 2.0/ SM based. The findings from the software review and literature review is finally culminated in the outline of the conceptual SPM…

▼ The thesis is devoted to the exploration of female identity construction in the mirror of feminist criticism, as presented in Buchi Emecheta’s The Joys of Motherhood (1979) and Ama Ata Aidoo’s Changes (1991). It seeks to find out how the authors of these novels, both females construct the identities of their female characters. The investigation underlines the relationship between collective and individual identities by presenting, comparing and contrasting identities in the two novels to interrogate areas of divergence and convergence. It hopes to explore and interrogate the range of identities constructed in the two texts, to identify and assess the points of divergence and convergence of female identities in the two novels and to examine how the exploration of female identity mirrors social relationships or interaction between the sexes.
The study also proceeds with the hypotheses that there is a tradition of male authored narratives (that have preceded female-authored narratives) that present stereotypical, male-privileging perspectives on women or female characters, thus the need to re-examine female identity. The following questions will guide the research: what is the identity or range of identities constructed in the two novels? In what ways do the female identities presented by both authors converge and diverge? How do the authors in their critique or exploration of female identity in their narratives, mirror and negotiate social interaction or relationship between the sexes.
The study will be based on a close reading of the two novels in the form of a comparative study by interpreting identity construction within the chosen theoretical model of identity construction. The study intends to examine the issue of female identity and its construction by looking specifically at the female as daughter, a family member, a woman in marriage, motherhood, Education, sex and work. The study hopes to be useful in a number of ways. First’ it would facilitate an appreciation of female identity as revealed by critical interrogation of textual matter.

▼ Environmental challenges do not exist around by themselves. They are constructed andput in our mind by the key stakeholders, who draw public attention to certain issues. People experience the world through the words of others. Construction of environmental concerns is an ever ongoing process, and we need to be aware about things that can change. In the 60s the world was concerned about limited number of issues, whilst today the planet seems to shout from pain, though in fact amount of problems have hardly raised. It is environmental organizations’ desert that people managed to raise their awareness about the world. This study exposes social constructs of environmental challenges created and narrated through social media by two leading environmental organizations, Greenpeace and the World Wide Fund for Nature. For this purpose, theories of social constructionism and agenda setting serve as the main theoretical framework. Therefore, most actively social media used by ENGOs was identified to be Facebook. The insight to the topic was provided by the content analysis of status updates from both organizations’ fan pages for the period from September 2009 to May 2012. It showed that social constructs of environmental challenges are not equally distributed in the world and number of concerns is disregarded. ENGOs do hope that regular citizens can contribute to sustainability, by giving real support to the projects which aim to have impact on policy makers. Our awareness let changes on the governmental level happen, as ‘when ENGOs speak, people debate, and policy makershear’. Thereby, through media construction of challenges solutions to them are articulated as well.

This thesis has been made with the purpose of identifying discourses in the way media choose to portray the situation of the homeless as well as the homeless themselves. The aim is also to investigate whether these discourses have an ideological foundation. Previous research distinguishes two main discourses where the responsibility of the individual and the responsibility of the society are portrayed as being in opposition to each other. Our method has been to perform a discourse analysis of political statements and debate articles which have been published in Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter. We chose to focus on these two newspapers since they are two of the Swedish newspapers which sell the most copies. Three general discourses were visible; the perspective of the society, the perspective of the individual, and the third, combined perspective of the society and the individual. Our results showed that the perspective of the individual was the most wide-spread discourse. We did not find ground for any connection to ideology. Instead we found that it could be connected to the ruling government or to the opposing parties. Opinions from people belonging to a ruling political party tended to have the perspective of the individual in mind, whereas the opposing parties demanded greater efforts from society.

▼ The aim of this study is to illuminate social worker’s perception of social class within the Swedish social service system. This study therefor examine if social class contributes to the production and reproduction of the client and what impact social class has on the interaction between client and social workers. The study was conducted with qualitative semi-structured interviews with social workers from three different departments of social service. The theoretical approach is Yeheskel Hasenfeld’s theory about moral practices in welfare organisations, Michael Lipsky and Roine Johansson’s theories about client construction and Pierre Bourdieu’s class theory. The conclusion of this study is that social class affects individual conditions and opportunities in Swedish social service. Social worker’s perceptions of social class have an impact on the construction of clients and will affect what level of service a client receives.

▼ Homelessness is a multilayered problem that affects hundreds of thousands of people across the United States. The
social work profession cannot rest on its laurels when large numbers of individuals and families suffer due to a lack of shelter, a necessity. Historically,
social work was at the vanguard of interventions against homelessness. However, over the past 30 years or so, the profession arguably has shifted its focus toward micro practice. As a result, macro issues such as poverty and homelessness have received comparatively less interest in the field. Using an exploratory design, this study examined factors associated with level of confidence working with the homeless population among 80 graduate
social work students in a Southern California University. Mann-Whitney U Test results revealed that gender and undergraduate
social work degree (BSW) correlate with participants’ confidence level toward working with people who are homeless. Male students had higher confidence level than their female counterparts, and BSW students reported higher confidence level than their non-BSW counterparts. Meanwhile, descriptive statistics revealed that less than 2% of the participants reported some interest in working with people who experience homeless population. Implications of the findings for theory, research, and
social work are provided.
