▼ A survey of scholarly and popular contemporary literature reveals two persisting stereotypes regarding the nature of women. First is the theory that woman is inferior to man and that since she is the "negative" of man's masculine nature, she cannot develop her humanity to the fullest extent without fusion with a male personality. Second, the "feminine personality" is destined by nature to domestic pursuits; it is primarily through marriage and motherhood that a woman must fulfill herself as a person. The consequence of these stereotypes is two-fold. The insistence that every woman must marry impels many young girls into a marriage for which they are not prepared, and helps to account for the increase in teenage marriage. Further, the supposition that a never-married woman remains in that condition because of some personality aberration, or is doomed to a life of frustration and personality distortion because of her singleness, denies the unmarried woman a normal place in society and closes doors essential to her self-actualization. To test the validity of these stereotypes, a sample of 38 never-married women between the ages of 34 and 72 was compared with a sample of 38 married mothers, aged 36 to 68. Members of both groups were drawn from Business and Professional Women's Clubs. An analysis of variance of The California Test of Personality scores achieved by these two groups failed to show any significant difference between them on any item of that test. Further, an item analysis of the 180 questions of the CTP similarly failed to show any unique pattern characteristic of either group. It is apparent that no significant difference in personal and social adjustment as measured by the CTP exists between this sample of never-married women and the control group of married mothers. The scores of both groups in this study are significantly higher than the average. When compared to the norms provided by the California Test Bureau the ranking for these samples range between the 50th and 80th percentiles. In searching for a factor which these married and unmarried women share in common which might produce their similarity in scores, but which they do not share with the "average" woman and which might tend to raise their scores above the average, their employment seemed significant. It is therefore concluded that it is through "satistying contribution to one's significant society" that an individual achieves personal fulfillment. Family may provide this "significant society" for some women, while for the unmarried some other significant association may suffice. The stereotypes are not upheld by this study, and it is concluded that if by choice or lack of opportunity a woman remains unmarried, she may nevertheless accomplish adequate personality adjustment, and granted social acceptance, perform a useful service for her society. ▼ The major purpose of this exploratory study was to develop an explanatory model of self-esteem and to interpret the model using the Social Exchange framework. To this end, a main effects and an interaction model emerged which offer promise toward understanding the components of self-esteem. This study examined 325 individual variables which served validity and/or descriptive purposes or joined together to form the main variables under investigation. The study extensively interviewed 70 unmarried, white older women who lived alone in age-peer homogeneous residences within the same Northwestern community. Stepwise regression analysis explained 65 percent of the variance in the self-esteem of these older women. In descending order of explained variance, the main effects model revealed that those respondents who felt of little worth – ... Less often strove to express themselves in meaningful projects ... Were more reluctant to mobilize needed social support in times of undue stress ... Were more intensely involved in family activities, especially advice, than with friends ... Expressed less over-all satisfaction with their network activities, and ... Felt more depressed than those who reported higher self-esteem. The interaction model further disclosed that"when being without a meaningful project" joined with either "family advice" or "reluctance to seek needed help", either combination more negatively correlated with self-esteem than did each variable separately. Three variables, financial adequacy, physical health capacity, and sociability, positively correlated with self-esteem as hypothesized but did not enter the final models. Apparently, the lack of variability of financial adequacy and physical health capacity and the close association between being without a project and sociability prevented these three variables from entering the final equations. However, the respondents' degree of sociability was instrumental in interpreting the results. Specifically, those respondents endowed with a more gregarious nature evidenced higher financial adequacy, greater physical health capacity, more satisfying network activities, and felt less depressed than did the more reserved isolates. Even when constrained by financial, physical health, or relationship losses, the constrained gregarious still maintained higher self-esteem than did the unconstrained isolates. Finally, by being more self-initiating than the isolates, the gregarious respondents sustained their self-esteem by expressing themselves in meaningful projects and by being willing to seek others out for help when their own efforts were insufficient. By more readily substituting feasible opportunities for those they could no longer pursue successfully, the gregarious, more than the isolates, appeared better able to transcend their losses. ▼ This thesis presents an ethnographic study of the experiences of singlehood within the Malay Muslim society in Malaysia. The study focuses on never-married women over the age of 30, past the normal marriageable age. Singlehood is regarded as a 'glocal' phenomenon. In other words, while the phenomenon is happening globally within modern societies, the experiences of singlehood are locally constructed. The experiences of singlehood are also gendered, where singleness among women is generally regarded negatively compared to men. This study attempts to answer the following questions: (1) How do Malay Muslims experiences singlehood at the societal level (macro level)? (2) How do never-married Malay Muslim women define their identities at the individual and interactional levels (micro level), within the family, at the workplace and as Muslims? (3) How are Malay Muslims' experiences of singlehood similar to, or different from, other socio-cultural contexts? In terms of data collection methods, in-depth interviews, participant observation and textual analysis were utilised. Analysis of the public discourses in Malay language newspaper articles and a Malay movie revealed that at the macro level, singleness is perceived as a 'problem' and single women are considered as having 'deficit' or 'incomplete identity'. However, at the micro level, analysis of the in-depth interviews using bases of identity as a framework revealed a mismatch between the public discourse of singlehood and the actual lived experiences of single women and their immediate environment. Evidently, the study participants were not passive subjects, but were rather active agents who creatively negotiated 'complete' identities within their families, at the workplace and as Muslims. Generally, the Malay Muslim experience of singlehood corresponded with the global trends in terms of the contributing factors towards the emergence of the phenomenon, and the common stereotypes attached to single women. However, further examination of the lived experiences of the study participants demonstrated that aspects of Malay culture (such as the concepts of jodoh [soulmate granted by God at the perfect time], langkah bendul [jumping the ledge], and mandi bunga [floral bath]), and Islamic teachings (such as dosa and pahala [God's punishment and reward], rezeki [sustenance], ikhtiar [effort] and redha [acceptance]) were the basis of the attitude and behaviour of never-married women within the context of the Malay Muslims in modern Malaysia.

▼ This study examined job satisfaction levels between employed single women and employed married women. The specific objectives of the study were: (1) to investigate differences in the level of job satisfaction between employed single women and employed married women- (2) to investigate the factors whicn influence the level of job satisfaction according to each marital status. The data used in this study included 1 653 white working women from 527 (32 percent) single women and 1 126 (68 percent) married women interviewed for the National Longitudinal Survey of Work Experience of Young Women in 1980. Statistical analyses of the data were conducted using the t-test, the two-way ANOVA, and a stepwise multiple regression. At the p < .05 level there was significant difference in Overall Job Satisfaction between employed single women and employed married women by using the t-test. For two-way ANOVA four different job satisfaction measures were used as dependent variables which were Overall Job Satisaction, Intrinsic and Extrinsic Rewards, Job Skill, and Safety and Health Condition. (1) Wage rate was positively related to the Intrinsic and Extrinsic Rewards measure. (2) Occupation was positively related to all four job satisfaction measures. Two-way interaction between marital status and occupation was found on the Overall Job Satisfaction measure and the Job Skill measure. (3) Education was negatively related to the Intrinsic and Extrinsic Rewards measure. (4) Work experience was significant for the Intrinsic and Extrinsic Rewards measure and Safety and Health Condition measure. (5) Unionization was negatively related to the Job Skill measure. Using stepwise multiple regression, none of the variables significantly related to the Overall Job Satisfaction measure. However, the order of variables as they were entered in the model differed for employed single women and employed married women The results of this study provide base line data for determining job satisfaction of working women between single and married. ▼ The number of single people is increasing in the Western world. Despite this and a trend towards individualisation, women are still stigmatised for being single. Quantitative studies have shown that physical appearance and romantic relationships are two interconnected areas by demonstrating that single women who seek a partner are more sensitive to their appearance. This can have adverse psychological implications, such as body image concerns or low self-esteem. How physical appearance is experienced in the context of partner seeking remains however understudied. To address this gap, this study explores qualitatively how women feel about themselves and their appearance when seeking a partner. Eight women, who had been single for at least one year, were interviewed. Data gathered from the semistructured interviews were transcribed and analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), chosen due to its in-depth exploration of the participants’ experiences. Four master themes were identified: I) The intrusive Other: Experiencing a sense of restriction when seeking a partner; II) Self-rejection when seeking a partner; III) Appearance as a means of control when seeking a partner; and IV) Feeling overwhelmed: The emotional intensity of seeking a partner. The results revealed that women who seek a partner experience several tensions regarding their appearance, their singleness and their social interactions. They are left excessively outer-focused, which is self-silencing and disconnecting. The implication for clinical practice is that counselling psychologists should acknowledge public and private aspects of distress when working with women who seek a partner. It is advised to stay with different tensions and to explore their underlying anxiety phenomenologically instead of either glamourising or pathologising women’s experiences of partner seeking. Limitations are discussed, including that this study does not consider the experiences of women who wish to remain single, which can be addressed in future research.

▼ The number of single individuals in Western societies has increased and continues to rise. Research suggests that single women do not find it easy to be single. This thesis explores the lived experience of being single in female counselling psychology trainees. Seven single women engaged in semi-structured interview, which were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. From the analysis, four main themes emerged. The first was an existential search for relatedness, encompassing the realisation that human relationships are fundamentally necessary; participants experienced being single as a choice that provoked anxiety. The second theme, the paradox of singleness, highlighted ambivalent emotions regarding freedom, but also the absence of a partner. The third theme viewed the training as an all-demanding partner, leaving no space for a romantic relationship, and whose presence at times felt like the loss of one’s soul. The final theme of longing for a romantic relationship addressed participants’ relational longing, feelings of isolation, loneliness, sense of struggle and being different to individuals with a partner. The relational nature of the training brought participants’ singleness into their awareness and this was experienced as difficult. In line with the research examined in the literature review, this study confirms the overall experience of being single as an ambivalent one, which causes individuals to struggle with their singleness. Moreover, this study furthers the previous literature by examining the experience in a rarely studied group. The insights gained from this research have deepened our understanding of the experience of single female counselling psychology trainees and contribute to knowledge within the profession. Specifically, this study suggests that counselling psychology trainees would benefit from training that addresses relational issues and the experience of being single. This would lead to improved clinical practice with single clients and an enhanced awareness of their own process.

When the First World War was declared, Olive King sensed an opportunity for adventure. After purchasing and converting an Alda truck into an ambulance, King entered into war service as an ambulance driver with the Scottish Women’s Hospitals and, later, the Serbian Army. While King’s wartime episode might be regarded as an aberration, other independent-minded Australian women acknowledged the war’s potential to liberate them from sheltered lives of domesticity. Australian single women became prominent figures in overseas humanitarian ventures, managed communications and logistics networks, and excelled as medical specialists in challenging environments. Home front upheavals also affected single women in diverse ways as they actively offered their time and skills to essential services, publicly appealed for opposition to war and conscription, sustained the nation’s education institutions, and influenced public policy regarding home front morality. Yet only snippets of these women’s experiences have received scholarly attention within Australia’s broader First World War history. This thesis tells the story of the First World War through the lens of Australian women who were unmarried, separated or widowed prior to the war, and variously regarded as ‘superfluous’, ‘surplus’ or simply ‘problematic’ within Australian public discourse. Shining a light on the experiences of women less constrained by their marital or maternal status offers a more nuanced account of women’s experiences in war while adding to emerging literature acknowledging Australian women’s self-perceptions of their value and legitimate citizenship during the early twentieth century. Adopting a hybrid micro-biographical method, this study draws upon archival records, correspondence, memoirs, diaries and newspapers to argue that Australian single women experienced war in unique ways as direct and active participants – transcending gendered expectations of their capabilities while also confronting resistant societal attitudes towards their prominent and self-assured wartime activism.

▼ My aim in this study was to understand and explain the academic performance of married women students in higher education. The study was conducted on married women students who are studying at higher institutions in Nigeria. A mixed research method was used. The study population was drawn from two higher education institutions – a university and a college of education. Focus group conversations and interview protocol were used to gather qualitative data, while a questionnaire and the academic results of participants were used to gather quantitative data. Data were analysed using constant comparative approach – the reported stories that emanated from the conversations with the research participants; the deduced meanings from the interview protocol; and the statistical testing of the generated hypothesis via t-test statistics and Pearson product moment correlation. The findings include the readiness of women students to narrate their experiences, and the hindrances cultural practices impose on their academic performance, amongst other things. This study uniquely reveals that the academic performance of women students in higher education in Nigeria differs between married women students and single women students. However, some women students in this study were satisfied with their academic performance while others were not. They blamed their academic performance on several factors including cultural practices, marital status, financial constraint and so forth. Apart from women students in higher education who were not satisfied with their academic performance, all women students who formed the sample, including those who considered their academic performance to be satisfactory, complained about cultural practices and their effect on academic performance. Despite their complaints, however, the majority of the women student participants in this study, both married and single, continue to support cultural practices. They said that cultural practices, including the ones that are considered harmful to higher education for women and their academic performance, should not be eradicated or changed, as they maintain that these practices make women truly responsible. ▼ The population of late-married or non-married women is growing in the current society. Considering single womenâs unique consumer psychology and consumer behaviors, the researcher aimed to investigate the feasibility of a single womenâs virtual community by employing the web 2.0 and the visual community with a focus on its economic characteristics. The data were collected through the observations of related industries, interviews with experts and targeted groups, questionnaire investigation, and operation proposals. The results of the study were classified into two categories: the business model and the position strategy. The business model (a) can enhance increasing returns effects of the dynamic circle and the lock-in circle and accumulate members, (b) plays a role of informational intermediatry who integrates contents with strategic alliances, and (c) offers E-commence with which to satisfy usersâ dynamic needs. Three main phasesâexperience economy, reputation economy, and profit-earningâare developed through such an advantage. The position strategy is to provide single women with an informational platform which addresses convenience, affinity, diversity, accuracy, safe-transaction, and customized-services. The platform includes four main topics: health, entertainment, self-growth, and investment. Therefore, it is able to meet single womenâs needs regarding health, travel, learning, and finance. The study also offers four suggestions for people who want to manage the virtual community. First, the virtual community should be developed based on market segmentation and take customersâ intentions into account. Second, it should offer customized services and promote the worth of using experiences. Third, it should be a friendly, risk-free platform in which varied, up-dated information is given. Fourth, it should offer customers easy-using ways and allow them to share information as well as interact with others. ▼ This study aimed to explore resilience and wellbeing among a group of eight refugee women originating from several countries (mainly African) and living in Brisbane, most of whom were single mothers. To challenge mostly quantitative and gender-blind explorations of mental health concepts among refugee groups, the project sought an emic and contextual understanding of resilience and wellbeing. Established perspectives, while useful, tend to overlook the complexities of refugee mental health experiences and can neglect the dense nature of individual stories. The purpose of my study was to contest relatively simplistic narratives of mental health constructs that tend to dominate migrant and refugee studies and influence practice paradigms in the human services field. In this ethnographic exploration of mental health constructs conducted in 2008 and 2009, the use of in-depth interviews, participant observations, and visual ethnographic elements provided an opportunity for refugee women to tell their own stories. The participants’ unique narratives of pre- and post-migration experiences, shaped by specific gender, age, social, cultural and political aspects prevailing in their lives, yielded ‘thick’ ethnographic description (Geertz, 1973) of their social worlds. The findings explored in this study, namely language issues, the impact of community dynamics, and the single status of refugee women, clearly demonstrate that mental health constructs are fluid, multifaceted and complex in reality. In fact, language, community dynamics, and being a single mother, represented both opportunities and barriers in the lives of participants. In some contexts, these factors were conducive to resilience and wellbeing, while in other circumstances, these three elements acted as a hindrance to positive mental health outcomes. There are multiple dimensions to the findings, signifying that the social worlds of refugee women cannot be simplified using set definitions and neat notions of resilience and wellbeing. Instead, the intricacies and complexities embedded in the mundane of the everyday highlight novel conceptualisations of resilience and wellbeing. Based on the particular circumstances of single refugee mothers, whose experiences differ from that of married women, this thesis presents novel articulations of mental health constructs, as an alternative view to existing trends in the literature on refugee issues. Rich and multi-dimensional meanings associated with the socio-cultural determinants of mental health emerged in the process. This thesis’ findings highlight a significant gap in diasporic studies as well as simplistic assumptions about refugee women’s resettlement experiences. Single refugee women’s distinct issues are so complex and dense, that a contextual approach is critical to yield accurate depictions of their circumstances. ▼ The U.S. Census Bureau (2012) estimated that there were 15.2 million female householders with no husband present. Many single mothers experience a high level of stress due to feelings of isolation and alienation from friends and family and having to deal with social, economic, and personal issues alone. This study evaluated the impact of participation in a social network site (SNS) on the stress levels of single mothers for the purpose of using updated resources to replicate and expand upon the initial work of Dunham et al. (1998). This study sought to answer the following research questions: Does participation in an SNS decrease mothers’ stress levels? Does increasing participation time in an SNS have a positive impact on the mothers’ stress levels? Do participants report decreased levels of social isolation as a result of participation in a SNS? 4) What themes are reflected in the content analysis of the blog posts in the SNS? A total of 30 single mothers were selected to participate in this study through the use of snowball sampling (Berg, 2007). Participants were volunteers who were recruited through local organizations in the Chattanooga area. This study utilized a one-group, pre-post design and mixed-methods data collection and supported the findings from the original study. A t test was used to compare the pre-post test results for Research Questions 1 and 3. Bivariate correlation was used to analyze Research Question 2. Qualitative data were collected with Research Question 4 through the use of participants’ responses to three blog questions. Participants were able to access the SNS for a period of 21 days. This study supported the original findings that mothers were most likely to report a decreased level of stress through the use of SNSs. However, there was no relationship between the time the mothers devoted to the SNS and a change in their stress levels. The isolation subscale showed a major difference in the participants feeling socially isolated on all items. A content analysis of the weekly blog questions showed that the participants provided and received encouragement, while over half said money was a huge stressor. Older ‘never married’ women are often identified as a ‘problem group’. Frequently characterized in stereotypically negative terms as loneliness, risk, and vulnerability, singleness is often considered ‘bad’ for health, especially for women who remain single. From a critical perspective, the implications of this for occupational therapy (OT) are multi-dimensional. Where marriage and motherhood are taken-for-granted life trajectories, older single women are marginalized, which affects assessments, interactions, and outcomes of care. By theorizing singleness from a social constructionist perspective, by attending closely to language and issues of identity, and by tracing out the connections between women’s accounts and broader social and cultural beliefs and values, this thesis contributes to a ‘critical OT’. Drawing on a theoretical blend of constructionist thinking established in social psychology, the talk of lifelong single women is considered from the critical/discursive psychological perspective. Employing interpretive repertoires, subject positions, and ideological dilemmas as analytical tools, the question explored by this thesis is ‘What interpretive repertoires do the speakers draw upon, and what strategies do they use to negotiate their identities?’ The available speaking resources were found to be strongly polarized into two repertoires: ‘singleness as deficit’ and ‘singleness as freedom’. The identity negotiation strategies employed by the participants included anticipating criticisms and objections to mild positive claims about the freedoms of singleness, rhetorically distancing themselves from damaging associations generated from the deficit repertoire, and troubling the applicability of the category ‘single’, which involves implementing discursive ‘tricks’ to close down conversations. In order to improve the quality of care for older single women, the profession of OT needs to recognize how socio/cultural discourses about singleness significantly shape research, theory, and practice. This thesis thus has important implications for critical OT, OT policies and norms of professionalism, and to the micro-politics of everyday OT practice.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Poverty in Botswana is a challenge for female headed households who have been identified as one of the groups that has been highly affected. Whereas poverty is dominant in the rural areas there has been an increasing record of urban poverty which has been attributed to urbanisation and the subsequent rural to urban migration. The poor in urban areas tend to stay in low income urban areas due to their limited choices brought about by lack of resources. The quality of the environment one stays in has been linked to varying outcomes for different people. Those who stay in disadvantaged environments may find themselves socially isolated from other neighbourhoods, lacking social services and besieged with a number of challenges common with poor neighbourhoods such as high crime rates and lack of job opportunities. Single mothers living in low income urban communities are also confronted with these challenges as well as those associated with parenting in poor communities. Social support has been identified as a stress buffer which can intervene and prevent situations from being appraised as stressful or lessen the impact of stress on individuals.The aim of this study was therefore, to gain a deeper understanding of the social support needs of single mothers living in low income urban communities. A combination of quantitative and qualitative research approaches were used in this study. Exploratory and descriptive research designs were further utilised in this study in order to explore the subject in an in-depth manner and to provide a detailed description of the phenomena being studied. A semi-structured interview guide was used to collect data from single mothers staying in Old Naledi, a low income urban community in Gaborone, Botswana. The development of the interview guide was informed by the literature review. Individual interviews were conducted with the single mothers. The main findings of the study indicate that single mothers in Old Naledi are faced with stressors such as neighbourhood, parenthood, poverty, crime and criminal activities, illness and death. These stressors had negative emotional and material effects on the single mothers. The findings further reveal that single mothers had emotional, instrumental and informational and appraisal needs. At the microsystem level these social support needs were provided for by their families who were the biggest providers of social support to single mothers; their neighbours, friends and their social groups. At the macrosystem level the single mothers got most of the social support from government while non-governmental organisation provided the least social support to single mothers in Old Naledi. The conclusions of the study indicate that there is need to support families in their efforts to provide social support to their needy family members. ▼ For this study, I researched the literature focused on Latinas and leadership development. It detailed discussed the obstacles Latinas encounter and the cultural factors that reinforce negative stereotypes, such as the role and influence of the patriarchal church, as a male dominated culture, on the Catholic school system. The study explored the experiences and perceptions of five Latinas who attended a single gender Catholic school, Felton Catholic High School, and their journey into leadership roles. Anzaldúa’s (1987) Borderlands theory was used to understand how the women navigated through nepantla, the in-between space, found their voices, and established inner peace, which ultimately led them to experiencing a type of liberation/empowerment, which in turn gave birth to the new mestiza, a new identity. Las nepantleras (Anzaldúa, 2015) are boundary crossers who initiate others from a listening, receptive, spiritual stance. They rise from their own visions and shift into acting them out; thus, introducing change. This takes place through Anzaldúa “path of conocimiento…inner work” (Anzaldúa, 2015). A foundational belief that the participants echoed was that of spirituality (inner peace). Anzaldúa’s definition of spirituality aims at becoming aware of interconnections between all things by attaining a grand perspective (Anzaldúa, 2015). This served as a coping mechanism for the women immersed in a male dominated work culture. The findings also suggested that strong family support and a positive ethnic identity were contributing factors in cultivating their leadership abilities. The participants created new narratives, new stories in essence “putting Coyolxauhqui together” (Anzaldúa, 2015, p. 138). They were able to re-write their personal stories with their family’s support. The participants unlearned “colonized behavior” that may have been taught in a patriarchal school. They were able to overcome limitations that may have been imposed on them as students. In this case, the participants used their leadership skills learned in a collectivist environment for the betterment of community to counter the dominant culture of individualism. Each participant appeared to follow the conocimiento stage of “the crossing” by defining herself in terms of who she is becoming, not who she has been (Anzaldúa, 2015, p. 136). It is a call to break free from coping strategies and undergo conversion. Anzaldúa’s (1987) Borderlands theory is an instrument that empowers the voiceless through the path of conocimiento, knowledge (Anzaldúa, 2015).
