▼ Silence is polysemous. It is filled with meaning. The silences, the voids, the enigmatic utterances within the conversation are also significant parts of the communicative act. Silence contains a paradox in its term in that it synchronously distinguishes the very content that it disguises. Many parallel processes can be employed to unravel the hidden meaning of what is spoken in relation to what is left unspoken. The multi-layered, nonverbal expression of silence is capable of evoking the unspoken. The fluid quality of silence sets us free from the cage of the words and takes us on a journey to the depth of the psyche. For many years Iranian writers have been writing under the imposition of numerous silences. The ancestral restrictions placed upon verbal expression, and censorship have muted many literary voices to the point that silence itself has become a significant constituent of their language. In poetry and prose, the incorporated silences in the form of various literary devices carry their veiled messages. Ambiguous indirect communication, the centrality of silence, the profusion of negatives, the lapses and the voids, are the prevalent qualities of the Persian literary tradition. Silence, like an orifice, punctures the coherence of the language to set the space for a contemplative field in which a reader and a writer engage in a wordless conversation. In order to understand the cultural vocabulary of the Iranian writers, it is necessary to be able to read such qualities and to grasp the explosive force and the vitality lying beneath them. Through the architecture of a void, this thesis traces the silences that are resonating in the city. By defining a spatial territory for the absent it ideologically addresses an existing urban fabric. The Republic of letters investigates the sympotomology of such silences to present a psychological archeology of the contemporary Iranian culture.

▼ This dissertation examines the potential of music to create places that enable the intertwining of the speakable and unspeakable, the present and the absent, materiality and thinking. In my compositions I aim to build ambiguities by searching for radical places of this communion. The dissertation contains scores to seven works composed between 2013 and 2017: Keiner kennt seinen eigenen Namen, keiner kennt sein wirkliches Antlitz (Léon Bloy) (2013-14) for violin, viola, violoncello, flute, oboe, clarinet, percussion and electronics, Keiner kennt seinen eigenen Namen, keiner kennt sein wirkliches Antlitz (Léon Bloy), Elf Orte after Texts by Robert Musil and of the New Testament (2014) for tuba (F) and amplification, Keiner kennt seinen eigenen Namen, keiner kennt sein wirkliches Antlitz (Léon Bloy), Four Improvisations after a Poem from “grenzland” by Anja Kampmann (2014) for amplified guitar, Totenfest, I. Echo (2015) for string quartet, Totenfest, II. Endymion (2016) for bass clarinet and string trio, Totenfest, III. Die Tränen der Aphrodite (The Tears of Aphrodite) for ensemble (2017), Totenfest, IV. Syrinx (2017) for ensemble. The scores are ordered chronologically and given as the numbered chapters of this dissertation.

▼ Music therapy research is predominantly focused on the sounds and words that occur in sessions. The role and place of
silence within usual practice is not so well covered in research literature. In this research, I used an auto-ethnographic approach and thematic analysis to try and understand how I perceive the silences in my own individual music therapy sessions with learners at a high school. This approach allowed me to connect with my own personal experience with
silence, as it is a highly subjective and context dependent phenomena and tool. I perceived
silence in nine major themes. Findings suggest I tend to ‘observe’ the learners when silences occur, for a variety of reasons, and this seems to contrast with my previous understanding of my therapeutic approach. Specifically, I found that I am more behaviourally focussed than I realised before I began my research journey, particularly in the way that I write and recall events in the therapy room. The research process enabled me to find out more about my personal relationship with
silence, and to some degree a personal truth about myself.

▼ This practice-led research project examines the concept of
silence. More specifically, within the contextual framework of the visual arts, it aims to extend the notion of
silence by opening up the possibility of its perception through the visual.
Silence as abstract concept cannot define itself. Only in its interrelationship with ‘sound’ can
silence be perceived. In order to identify and explore its legibility my research positions
silence at a specific point of intersection across diverse fields of study: it draws on an examination of the sound-
silence relationship identified within the fields of linguistics, music and poetics, and notes the capacity of repetition to strengthen a response of
silence. Significant analogies between aural and visual modalities of perception are foregrounded. In addition, Zen Buddhist philosophical thought is discussed. Of particular note is Zen’s crucial influence on minimalist aesthetics. My practice-based research, read alongside these theoretical concepts, is grounded in ongoing experimentation. It explores the idea that specific formal and technical elements of an artwork manifest as visual correlatives of the sound-
silence relationship: an alliance to minimalist aesthetics and a spareness of form, a considered sense of spatiality revealed through the interplay of form and space, a reduced and subtle palette, a close tonal range, an interest in ambiguous boundaries, and the use of repetition and the repeated motif. My practice examines the possibility that it is in the integration of select combinations of these elements, and the subtlety of their relation, that connections emerge which tend towards an affective capacity for
silence. Towards this end, I created a series of small experimental works on paper that led my practice towards the increased expressive potential of three dimensional space and the completion of a final minimalist installation. My research suggests that
silence unfolds as a transmission of suggestiveness between viewer and artwork, arising from the dialogue between subtle relations of colour and tone, space and non-space, absence and presence, and movement and stillness. Never a communication of defining fact,
silence as visual response is nevertheless a material relationship.

▼ This paper presents a discussion of functional
silence in contemporary classical music with a particular focus on the music of Salvatore Sciarrino and Jürg Frey, two composers whose drastically-contrasting bodies of work both occupy the interstitial space between the audible and inaudible. To begin, I address three main questions: what are the functions of
silence in a musical context, how do the characteristics of a work affect our perception of these silences, and how do these functions relate to our perception of music on the edge of
silence. In answering these first two questions, I discuss three categories of silence – temporal, spatial, and gestural – which I use in a
silence-centric analyses of Sciarrino's Let me die before I wake, Allegoria della notte, and Infinito Nero, as well as Frey's Streichquarttet III. To further apply these concepts to music on the edge of
silence, I provide a fourth category – timbral silence –
which describes the perception of absence or
silence within the presence of sound and allows for the application of existing functional principles of
silence to sounding events. In turn, this allows us to understand the music of Sciarrino and Frey in terms of timbral completion and timbral dissolution, respectively. Having established a theoretical framework for understanding the function of
silence, the second half of this paper discusses the composition of A Moment on the In-between, my 2018 work for string quartet, with a focus on the intentional application of these principles of functional
silence within the piece.

▼ Organisational silence is an essential aspect of the field of organisational behaviour, examining why and how information, ideas or opinions are withheld by individuals within organisations. Silence in the organisation can take place between employees and their managers, thus cutting across different levels of an organisation. Attempts are made to understand this phenomenon through exploring the specific types of - and reasons for - silence. Whilst existing literature has provided an important contribution to the field, it arguably has many shortcomings in relation to adequately explaining or understanding this phenomenon. According to the existing literature, which addresses the main four types of silence (Prosocial, Acquiescent, Quiescent and Opportunistic), this study intended to further explore these forms of silence using Grid-Group Cultural Theory (GGCT). It is suggested that this theory provides a more effective approach to understanding silence; through examining how types of silence are produced through thought styles; including fatalistic, individualistic, hierarchical and egalitarian. In addition, GGCT helps to determine more types of silence than currently exist in the literature. This study was based on a qualitative methodology seeking to understand why people tend to keep silent. Semi-structured interviews were held with 32 respondents, made up of six managers and 26 employees. These were based in six female educational institutions, working under the umbrella of the education ministry to supervise public and private schools, from kindergarten to high school, in Riyadh, in the context of Saudi Arabia. Using semi-structured interviews, the respondents were asked questions relating to their thoughts and reasons for silence in the work setting. The data collected from the respondents were analysed using NVivo and three key results emerged. First, there are more types of silence than indicated in the existing literature. Each form of culture tends to come with a certain type of silence. Fatalistic thought style, for example, produces acquiescent and quiescent types of silence. Egalitarian thought style, on the other hand, produces prosocial types of silence. The individualistic thought style produces opportunistic silence and hierarchical thought style produces some types of silence, including respectful, empathetic and silence for the purpose of feigning ignorance. The research data suggested that each type of silence comes with one dominant type of thought style, which conflicts with findings of voice studies which show how voice emerges through a combination of thought styles. The fatalistic thought style, however, was found to be a key element (if only a small element) which worked with all other types of thought styles, in order to produce silence. Further research is needed to explain why and to what extent the fatalistic thought style plays a role here. Research into how thought styles produce silence and voice at the same time would also be beneficial, as the boundaries between silence and voice…

▼ Over the past decade, the general public has been shocked by revelations of widespread corruption and malfeasance in international cricket and the Catholic Church, two institutions that had hitherto been respected and trusted. Even more shocking, we now know that corruption had been happening in these institutions for decades, and that senior administrators had for much of this time known about it. This thesis seeks to understand how and why the corruption was allowed to develop and grow, despite being known about by these administrators and other institutional stakeholders. Using an interpretive, processual approach involving grounded theory methods, this textual study was conducted on documents related to match-fixing in international cricket and child sexual abuse by clergy in the U.S. Catholic Church during the late 20th century. The thesis advances understanding of the phenomenon known as the ‘organization of corrupt individuals’ (OCI) – where subordinate employees or members, rather than senior managers or administrators, are the primary perpetrators of the corruption.
The thesis develops a theoretical model of the OCI phenomenon which suggests that a set of antecedent conditions influence the behaviour of perpetrators and organizational and institutional stakeholders over five stages of the phenomenon’s growth and decline. When perpetrators identify and begin to exploit opportunities to act corruptly, the response of stakeholders at each stage either enables or disables such corruption. The OCI progresses through stages of emergence, uncertainty and cover up which, if it eventually becomes unsustainable, results in a powerful intervention and scandal that damages the affected institution before efforts are made by key stakeholders to control the problem and restore its reputation. This model can be used by researchers and managers to understand the complex dynamics which embolden perpetrators to act corruptly and lead to organizational stakeholders, either unintentionally or intentionally, facilitating their corrupt behaviour.
The thesis demonstrates the value of an interpretive, processual methodological approach when exploring the dynamics of corruption development and the benefits of integrating some important extant theories in the diverse fields of organizational corruption, deviance, ethical management and governance, man-made disasters and secrecy and silence. Furthermore, it demonstrates the important role that stakeholders play in enabling and disabling individual corruption in organizations.
A significant outcome of this thesis is that it demonstrates that ethical management alone will not prevent OCI development in its early stages. To overcome this difficulty, the thesis argues that ethical research should be extended to examining prevention and mitigation strategies that governance bodies might use to identify and control potential forms of corruption by individuals in their organizations and institutions.

▼ It requires an intentional act to find silence in society today. The technologies that assist efficiency and support personal entertainment invade nearly everything we do. The noise of the world disrupts the ability to dwell with God as silence is where God exists and is heard. It is particularly wearisome when daily noise distracts opportunities for prayer, especially the Eucharistic liturgy of the Mass. The Mass calls for periods of sacred silence that promote times of personal and communal prayer apart from daily noise. Therefore, this treatise presents silence found in the life of God, the liturgy of the Mass, and prayer to support the directed moments of silence at Mass as an ongoing formation project for priests. At Mass, it is the priest presider’s role to lead a community in full, conscious and active participation, which is not only words and postures, but also times for sacred silence. If the priest is not formed to recognize the significance of sacred silence in the Mass, it will affect how he prays the Mass and how he leads the assembly in prayer. The project results display priests’ appreciation for silence, an inspirational perception of silence as symbolic and a method to exercise the moments silence at Mass for contemplative prayer.

▼ Silence is a liturgical behaviour in which all are invited to participate, and as emphasized by the Second Vatican Council, has a prominent place in the Holy Mass. Silence favours the active participation of the faithful and offers an anthropological dimension fully implicating each person during the celebration of the Blessed Sacrament. It contributes to the Holy Order of the Mass, allowing to pass from one ritual to the other calmly and without haste; respecting the need of silence is intrinsic to the ars celebrandi. Silence favours an interior spirit whereby the liturgy is enriched by the presence of each person. In effect, it allows each person, at given moments in Mass, to collect oneself, to meditate on what has been heard, to pray and to give thanks. Silence keeps a discreet yet essential place in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. The faithful's encounter with God is genuinely enhanced through Liturgical silence; it allows the faithful to be conscious of being in His presence, and with the help of the Holy Spirit to receive His word and respond. Therefore, let us not forget the pedagogical and missionary element of Silence in the Mass.

▼ This thesis examines the theme of secrecy and silence in the philosophy of Plotinus. This philosopher is known for the innovative use he made of Platonic and Aristotelean materials in constructing a thought-world which posits a totally transcendent first principle, the one or the good, from which all other entities are derived. The Plotinian one is ineffable by its very nature, and Plotinus expounds at length the claim that it cannot be comprehended, either by speech or thought. The paradox of a philosopher writing extensive discourses about a reality which is said to be ineffable is the main topic of this thesis, which seeks to answer the question: what is Plotinus doing when he tells us that he cannot, or will not, reveal the nature of the one? Partial answers to this question have been given in previous scholarship through study of the philosophic background which led Plotinus to posit such an ineffable reality, and through analysis of the arguments in which he upholds the doctrine of the one’s ineffability. Building on this body of work, this thesis gives a more compre- hensive answer to this question by analysing the tropes of silence and secrecy which were developed in Middle Platonism, derived especially from Plato’s writings, and by locating Plotinus in a broader philosophic tradition which interpreted canonical thinkers as esoteric writers. In this way, the thesis provides a historical context for Plotinus’ treatment of the ineffable one. Plotinus’ discourse of ineffability is present- ed not just as a response to purely philosophical issues, but also an enactment of a tradition of philosophic silence, which determined in part how a Platonist philoso- pher articulated in written form ideas about concealment and the limits of discourse. Through a combination of close reading of a number of Plotinian texts and full dis- cussion of the wider context, this thesis aims to integrate analytical and cultural approaches to Plotinus’ philosophy. It aims also to bring out the significance of the theme of philosophical silence for late antique philosophy both as a discipline and as a socially-embedded part of Græco-Roman civilisation.

▼ Silence in the communicative process is often viewed as the background to
speech patterns, or it is not viewed at all. Yet cultural and ethnic teachings concerning
the importance of
silence, as well as appropriate uses of
silence in communication,
aftect communicative processes in classroom contexts, and can thus affect teaching
and learning processes as well. In this study,
silence in intercultural communication is
the main focus. This is a study about the meanings of
silence in multi-ethnic
classrooms of older adults, as well as a study of signs and signals for breaking
silence
which are used by participants in classroom contexts when they wish to speak.
A search of the literature revealed minimal information concerning meanings of
silences in classroom contexts and no information concerning meanings of
silence, nor
about signs and signals for breaking
silence in multi-ethnic classrooms of older adults.
Therefore, this qualitative research project was designed to answer some questions
about these intercultural communicative issues, which are vital aspects of teaching and
learning processes. The two main research questions were: 1) what are the meanings
of
silence in multi-ethnic classrooms of older adults? 2) what are the signs and
signals for breaking
silence in multi-ethnic classrooms of older adults?
A multiple case study approach was used with seven adults (four women and
three men) whose ages ranged from 65 to 82 years and who were from the countries
of Nigeria, Cuba, Greece, China, India, England, and Canada. These case studies
were supported by a triangulated methodological approach which used three
qualitative research methodologies in order to enhance the depth of understanding
concerning the research questions of the study. These three methodologies were:
ethnographies of communication; ethnomethodology; and interactional analysis of
discourse. Saville-Troike’s (1985) categories of silences were used as an initial
conceptual framework for analyzing and organizing the data which were gathered
from five different sources. This conceptual framework was then adjusted in order to
accommodate the various sub-categories and themes which emerged from the data of
this study. The five sources of data were: transcription of a video of the participants in
their classroom; transcriptions of audio tapes of stimulated recall interviews with
individual participants; researcher observations; first focus group discussion; and
second focus group discussion (where participants made additions and corrections to
tentative findings that were presented to them by the researcher). In order to avoid
stereotyping or unwarranted generalizations concerning various ethnic or cultural
groups, and in order to respect the communicative differences within cultural and
ethnic groups, meanings of
silence were not categorized according to culture, but
rather, were categorized into communicative themes across cultures. As well, a
metaphor of a “patchwork quilt” was used throughout this inquiry as a vehicle…

▼ This work examines the intentional silences that occur during the evidentiary interview. It claims that
silence functions as a response in the interview's inflexible adjacency sequence structure and the overgeneralization of
silence as a disfluency is the byproduct of insufficient transcription methods. The current, insufficient transcription methods contribute to the difficulties surrounding
silence in the U.S. legal system, and this work suggests minor changes to transcription methods that will help formalize the study and understanding of
silence. This work applies our concept of
silence to police evidentiary interviews and examines the relationship of
silence to power asymmetries within the exchange. The analysis suggests that suspects who consistently use intentional
silence are able to greatly increase their power within the exchange and inconsistent use helps to protect against the coercive nature of the interview. Finally, we examine how intentional
silence affects the suspects' voice and find that
silence functions as a linguistic shield but neither strengthens or weakens the suspects' voice. ( en )

▼ Medical errors have an increasing prevalence in the healthcare system today, and communication is often at the heart of many of these issues. Challenges or difficulties for nurses in communicating about errors, as well as instances of nursing
silence about errors, have been noted in the healthcare and nursing literature. While numerous studies have noted constraints and difficulties in speaking up about errors, no studies were found that examined
silence in specific relationship to the nurse practice environment and patient safety. The primary purpose of this study was to explore how the nursing practice environment influences nursing
silence and patient safety. The secondary purpose was to examine the reliability of the Four Forms of Employee
Silence Scale by Knoll and van Dick (2013) for use in the nursing population. A predictive, correlational research design was used. Several variables were examined, including perceptions of the nurse practice environment, preferences and motives for
silence, and perceptions of patient safety. Ninety one registered nurses completed an electronic survey via the Internet which contained 58 questions. Parametric and non-parametric statistics were used for data analysis. The data revealed that the perception of the nurse practice environment is a predictor of both preferences for
silence, and the perception of patient safety. In addition, findings were that nurses working in Magnet® practice environments do not differ significantly from those in Non-Magnet® practice environments in terms of
silence behaviors related to the observation of errors. Results suggest that feelings of fear and lack of value sometimes exist among nurses in both Magnet® and Non-Magnet® organizations. Despite the promotion of collaborative relationships, participation, and feedback by Magnet® organizations, these activities do not seem to result in less frequent
silence behaviors among registered nurses working in these organizations. Finally, the Four Forms of Employee
Silence Scale was noted to be a reliable scale for use in the nursing population. Based upon the findings, implications and recommendations for future study are made.

▼ My dissertation asks if a genre of rhetorical
silence is emerging in response to message saturation in contemporary societies. I define rhetorical
silence as an intentional and strategic use of
silence to influence. I analyze three instances of rhetorical
silence. Ghazala Khan’s
silence at the 2016 Democratic National Convention was an uncodeable and indigestible excess that stalled the production-consumption cycle and caused physiological discomfort in the audience. The discomfort led to a clamor for a spectacle that cured public indigestion but robbed Ghazala of her agency. The students participating in the Day of
Silence bookend their
silence with speech to contain the meaning of their
silence. Since
silence does not add to information chaos, it is gaining recognition as a new way to protest in digitalized societies. Meher Baba’s 44-year
silence transformed him into a mythical figure. By relying on interpretation rather than documentation, Baba acquired a status outside of time and place. My study found that instances of rhetorical
silence share six generic characteristics: (a) Rhetorical
silence is employed to oppose norms such as stereotypes of oppressed and empowered women, gender binaries, heterosexuality, and the image of a talking God; (b) Although rhetorical
silence challenges norms, it is not adversarial. Instead, it invites reflection; (c) Rhetorical
silence subverts the production-consumption cycle by creating a human artifact that cannot be packaged and consumed digitally; (d) By engaging the body, rhetorical
silence subverts the aesthetics of speed and efficiency on which the digital machine relies; (e) Although
silence can be polysemic, the rhetor can contain the meaning by bookending
silence with speech; and (f) The form can captivate audiences by evoking a desire to decode the mystery of the
silence. My study concludes that a shift is occurring in the available means of persuasion because of the dominance of the digital machine. Rhetorical
silence functions at the level of the body, which the machine cannot comprehend. People can be moved by rhetorical
silence because it takes a human to listen to
silence and because it appeals to the body rather than to its digital twin.

▼ The project investigates the possibilities for a way of working that connects a focus on qualitative and atmospheric qualities of space with a focus the way we inhabit and perform within these spaces. The first is often thought of as an individual experience, the second as a socially constructed one. To bridge this divide the project concentrates on the process of attuning: both as a process of making spaces and as a way of understanding the way we inhabit these spaces. Inhabiting is also creative: it is the activity in which a space, to a certain extend, is always re-created. The question then is how to see architecture as a generous and participating support for relations. A support hat is involved in life, not neutral but partaking; for relations to ourselves and our inner lives, to each other, and to our environments. Spaces that are generous and open to life. The site of the architectural investigation is one room in an existing building in Groningen that houses 15 people. This situates the project in a place and time as it joins in their ongoing life. The design tries to answer to a shared desire to make of this space a room for silence and stillness, for contemplative practices, to meditate, or to study. The process has been about getting to know the place, the people, even to formulate the programme of the room - and finding methods with which to do so.

Silence is at the heart of all the musical, literary, movie weaves. This study is based on its importance. Putting first its inherent complexity into perspective enables us to search for its place and expression in the literary field, and then in the musical field to finally reach the movie field that has always been the driving force behind this research. By studying one of the movies by David Lynch, Wim Wenders, John Huston and Milos Forman in much greater depth, silence is to be explored in its connection with voice, dialogues, music, body, movement, film editing, around issues of memory and oblivion, imagination, wandering, incommunicability, break, privacy, introversion or extraversion, protection or communion , mask, imprisonment, death, oppression or freedom ... These case studies allow us to observe silence in its polymorphism, its changing values, dualities or the stratification of its forms.

This thesis deals with the writing of Scholastique Mukasonga and Atiq Rahimi. She mainly questions their respective writings through Our Lady of the Nile, Inyenzi or Cockroaches and Syngué Sabour. Stone of patience. Although full of words, these three worksare part of a writing of silence from an aesthetic and historical point of view. She wants to demonstrate that in the face of horror and trauma, the writing of silence becomes both necessary and inevitable because language is now struggling to translate the pain of a past that does not pass. Given the difficulty of language in translating the suffering and trauma of the victim, silence intervenes as a language strategy that makes it possible to go beyond the sentence. Also,in the face of Adorno, who felt that all poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric, the present analysis demonstrates that writing remains horrifying to the extent that it tends, itself, to absence and silence as declared by Blanchot. . For this, she uses an aesthetic that combines silence and speech in an expression that achieves the unspeakable.

By choosing to work on representations of homosexuality in French-speaking sub-Saharan African countries, we pursued three goals at our fingertips. Insurgency against the silence of several African scholars to address the theme of homosexuality in their scientific work, to make it our reflection has therefore imposed itself on us imperatively. Indeed, our first objective (epistemological) was to take an interest in this theme, which still remains an almost unexplored and untapped field of literature in French-speaking Africa, in order…

▼ This dissertation argues that the role of
silence as essential to experience the full aesthetic beauty of art in a museum setting. Museums have changed their focus due to socio-economic and financial pressures. They have changed from silent “temples” for art conservation and exhibition to places for interactive art education, entertainment, and social gathering. The results of these changes have been both positive and negative. Attendance has increased, enhancing the museum experience, engaging more diverse audiences in museum activities, and dispelling the “elitist” image of the museum. These changes, however, have resulted in the loss of a silent space to quietly experience a personal and emotional connection to art. As the world becomes more urban, noisier, and addictively connected to technology, this study argues the need to include a silent experience in the art museum. This will enhance visitors’ aesthetic, emotional, and educational experience with art. This dissertation is divided into seven chapters. Chapters one, two, and three explore the role
silence plays in spiritual, aesthetic, and learning engagement. Chapter four examines the singular experience of wonder and its profound influence on the appreciation of art appreciation. Chapters five and six present
silence and art from two perspectives: how artists reflect
silence in their art works, and the
silence viewers see in art. The final chapter seven presents a model for a room dedicated for viewing art in
silence. This experience would provide an opportunity for visitors to connect personally, deeply, and emotionally with a work of art without influence from others. Each of the chapters cites research examining how
silence develops the capacity to observe art with more detail, create a more personal and emotional connection with art, and to experience the beauty of art for its own sake before looking at it from an historical and analytical perspective. Further study is needed to assess the value of a silent experience in an art museum. This study provides evidence that
silence can positively affect the visitors’ involvement with art. Observing art in
silence increases the visitors’ ability to discover more detail in a work of art and connect personal experiences with it. In an increasingly noisy world, a silent space removes outside distractions and offers visitors an opportunity to have an emotional connection with the beauty of art.

▼ This work deals with the silence at school from the point of view of the inter-human. Based on the presence-word of Martin Buber, we seek to understand the silence from the perspective of the duality of human actions: as a dialogic silence or as a silence in mode I-It. Therefore, a type of anthropology of silence in the school is accomplished with the aim of understanding the attitude of men when facing the occurrences of silence in the education, when recognizing the forms of silence that the school has incorporated in its activities, as well as which the value of the silence that the man has learned with the schooling. Presenting a methodology congruous with the intention here, it was intended, in one hand, to enter the universe of a classroom, being observed the educative attitudes of teachers and students, and, in the other hand, pay attention to facts outside the school, which also allowed us to observe and, especially, feel the silence made-present. These facts established narratives, aesthetically composing literary texts in the format of a book, whose pages permeated the lines of this study. At school, as it is structured, it was found that the silence makes the disclaimer for the human, presenting itself as imposing, and therefore, as similar to silencing. But, focusing on a situation of non-conventional teaching and learning, it can be perceived that the dialogic silence can happen, and can present educative value, when people make themselves available to genuinely meet otherness, when they perceive the other entirely, when they present themselves vulnerably in recognizing their finitude and limitations, when they choose to renew the answer to someone who is seen as You, and not as This, they propitiates conditions for a true educational conviviality.

The data for this paper was collected during ethnographic fieldwork conducted at Bodhi Zendo, a Zen Meditation Centre located in the hills of Kodaiknal, in the province of Tamil Nadu on the southeastern coast of India. During a four-week period between December 1st 2012 and January 2nd 2013, I participated as a practitioner and researcher where I conducted interviews with other retreat participants, documented my own experiences, and recorded my own and other participants' reflections through photography, video, and self-reflective field notes. During my time at the Zen Centre I meditated for ten hours daily and I completed both a silent mini-sesshin and a silent sesshin . This paper includes thoughts and experiences prior to the fieldwork in India as well as thoughts and reflections experienced during the five months upon returning home to Canada. The pupose of this paper is to demonstrate the experience of self through a meditative lens and describe the liminal and transformative states between
silence and sound.

▼ Within postcolonial theory, the issue of gaining a voice has been very important. As Bill Ashcroft, Gareth Griffiths and Helen Tiffin explain in The Post-Colonial Studies Reader (2008), language has the power to provide, because of its function of naming, a means for knowing the world that surrounds us (with, in a colonial situation, the surrounding world being a colonized place or people): “To name the world is to „understand‟ it, to know it and to have control over it. (…) To name reality is therefore to exert power over it (…).” (Ashcroft, Griffiths, Tiffin 2008: 261). The one that names is able to understand the world and control it; he or she is in a
subject position. Thus, in a postcolonial situation, a way for the colonized to take back control over their world is to name it; to make their voice heard, where at first the voice of the colonizers was made heard loudest.
This emphasis on the importance of having a voice sheds an interesting light on the fictions of J.M. Coetzee. Many of his novels contain characters that have trouble speaking or do not speak at all: characters without a voice. This thesis explores the idea that, even though Coetzee‟s (nearly) silent characters do not have a (strong) voice, it seems possible to attribute a certain positive value to their
silence. Their
silence seems to be important, rather than a problem. It is this importance of
silence, within the novels Foe and Life & Times of Michael K by J.M. Coetzee, and the way in which this perspective on
silence differs from the usual perspective within postcolonial thinking, that this thesis addresses.

▼ The transition of Latina community college students
warrants further interest from the research community and this
study aims to fill a gap in the research by examining the
transition experiences from the voices of Latina community college
students. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand
Latina community college students’ transition experiences. The
theoretical framework utilized was Interculturalism (Tanaka, 2002).
The study involved the participation of eight Latina community
college students from an urban/suburban community college, in
addition to the participation of an administrator and staff member
from the same college. Data collection involved individual
interviews, focus groups and non-participatory observations at an
urban/suburban community college in New York State. The data was
analyzed utilizing the multiple case study analysis method.
Findings indicated that transitioning to community college is a
subjective experience, thus transition has been redefined by
Latinas as they transition to college. Latina community college
students experience transitioning to college individually and
uniquely over varying periods of time resulting in the finding that
Latina community college students challenge the traditional concept
of transition to community college. Findings also indicated that
Latinas are burdened with non-credit courses and program
misplacement during transition to community college resulting in
embarrassment, frustration, lack of motivation and often delaying
program acceptance and degree attainment. Findings also indicated
that Latinas experience racism on campus and as a result become
silent indicating a silence to resilience pathway. Silence occurs
in two ways: (1) Latinas are forced to be silent, and/or (2)
Latinas choose to be silent, both of which lead to resilience. The
pathway involves four phases which Latinas encounter: (1)
Experience racism, (2) Emotional reactions, (3) Responses: silence
and resilience, and (4) Outcomes. A process of identity
transitioning occurs along the continuum of these phases. An
additional finding involves Latina students applying multiple types
of strategies as they transition to college including behavioral
modifications in class and on campus, adopting new study habits,
and social involvement. Lastly, the primary support network for
Latina community college students are their
families.

Moral openness: on the climate for reasoned moral agreement.

▼ Businesspeople sometimes face moral equivocality at work, when they must discern the moral implications of a problem. That equivocality poses a risk of overlooking or misconstruing important implications of a problem; for that reason, many businesspeople seek the insight of others involved in a problem before making a decision.
Moral openness describes the earnestness and validity of those inquiries. Some inquiries are too perfunctory to address the question, or directed toward people who are already expected to agree or who can be cajoled into agreement. Other inquiries seek out a broader range of opinions, refrain from bullying or co-opting participants, and pursue the inquiry to its resolution. The latter are more open, and are likely to lead to more robust conclusions.
This dissertation conceptualizes moral openness climate as the set of shared perceptions among members of a work group that moral openness prevails when moral equivocality arises. The philosophical literature on discourse ethics, and the organizational behavior literatures on climate,
silence, sensemaking, and empowerment together give definition to moral openness climate, which is then situated in a nomological net of related constructs.
This dissertation also describes four studies, using both qualitative and quantitative data from the laboratory and the field. These illustrate the reality of moral equivocality and moral openness climate in the workplace, develop a survey scale for measuring moral openness climate, and relate moral openness climate to its expected consequences. Results indicate that moral openness climate is simpler in practice than might be expected in light of its philosophical roots, and in fact that it may not be distinct from existing constructs like respectful interaction or participatory decision-making. Its predictive validity is mixed, with significant results only for collective moral motivation and collective moral character.
These findings suggest that while moral discourse and moral openness appear to be realities in organizations, businesspeople do not discern important aspects of moral openness climate. Implications for the literatures on discourse ethics in organizations, organizational
silence, moral psychology, and sensemaking are discussed, as is future research on issue construction and moral leadership.

▼ This thesis is concerned with a number of phenomena in ancient oratory and rhetoric connected to <i>limits of speech</i>: being silent, pausing, not treating a topic. All of this can happen either as a matter of incapacity or failure-or deliberately. Research in this particular area is scarce. A first desideratum is therefore a phenomenology, or typology, of these <i>limits of speech</i> in antiquity, both as they occur and are dealt with in practical oratory, and as they are discussed in rhetorical theory. This thesis focuses on Cicero, in whose works both sides can be studied, but also considers earlier and later authors. A comprehensive typology of the large area of <i>omissions</i> of topics, facts, opinions, and even words and styles, from a speech leads especially to the phenomenon of <i>explicit</i> omission, usually termed <i>praeteritio</i>. This figure, widely used in practice but quite underrated in (ancient) theory, is the most prominent example of ancient oratory <i>making use of its limits</i>. Similar observation are made in other areas: the issue of <i>structural pauses</i> within a speech is closely related to prose rhythm; less studied, but equally interesting are <i>longer pauses</i> used to leave time for something else, especially for interaction with the audience or individuals, or enforced when the orator is <i>interrupted</i> by the audience. Another reason for <i>interruptions</i> is the orator's own <i>incapacity</i>: memory failure, voice failure, or other health issues. The rhetorical writings provide some instruction for prevention and remedies; but also in practice, orators not only avoided or handled possible failures, but turned the issue around into a rhetorical device, employable to their advantage. All these aspects provide a fresh perspective on the (ancient) principle of <i>artem arte celare</i> and contribute to a new view on <i>oratorical practice and rhetorical theory</i>: although the gap between theory and practice has been seen and stated in research often enough, the point of this thesis is the rarely observed influence (or rather lack of influence) of practice on theory: the fact that oratorical practice develops far beyond the theoretical instructions, and yet no rhetorician reintegrates these developments fully and systematically into rhetorical theory. The explanation suggested here is that written rhetorical theory separated itself from oratorical practice quite early on and developed an independent existence of its own throughout antiquity, and that this is especially evident in the oratorical use of <i>limits of speech</i>.
