▼ Since the discovery of cosmic rays about one century ago, there have been two main approaches in their experimental study. The first is analyzing their arrival directions, energies, and composition in order to determine the nature of their source or sources. The second is analysis of their interactions in the atmosphere to learn about the structure of elementary particles through the characteristics of their collisions at extremely high energy. The energy available in the collisions of cosmic ray protons with atmospheric nuclei exceeds greatly that achieved or achievable in any man-made accelerators. The study of these interactions may reveal the existence of new, exotic particle states, as well as the details of particle structure. The Pierre Auger Observatory is the largest cosmic ray experiment ever constructed. It records air shower data from the interactions of primary cosmic ray particles with energies from 10¹⁸eV to beyond 10²⁰eV. The interaction energies of these events exceed the LHC at CERN by one to two orders of magnitude. I have developed a new method that seeks to identify leading particles with long tracks emerging from the primary interaction. The technique characterizes the properties of the leading particles, giving information on inelasticity and cross-section in a regime well beyond current accelerator data. The method identifies events with irregular air shower development. These events are compared to expectations from CONEX air shower simulations using the current event generator QGSJET-II. To eliminate background events, real-time data on cloud cover at the site are employed. We have measured the interaction length for the leading particles with mean energy near 10¹⁸eV. Based on the predicted leading particle composition in QGSJET-II, we have determined an interaction length for protons. The method does not find any irregular air showers in simulations of iron primaries. The analysis demonstrates the proton primaries are present in the cosmic rays at these energies.

▼ This thesis contains the work of two recent developments in the Herwig general purpose event genrator. Firstly, the results from an new implementation of the KrkNLO method in the Herwig event generator are presented. This method allows enables the generation of matched next-to-leading order plus parton shower events through the application of simple positive weights to showered leading order events. This simplicity is achieved by the construction Monte Carlo scheme parton distribution functions. This implementation contains the necessary components to simulation Drell-Yan production as well as Higgs production via gluon fusion. This is used to generate the first differential Higgs results using this method. The results from this implementation are shown to be comparable with predictions from the well established approaches of POWHEG and [email protected] The predictions from KrkNLO are found to closely resemble the original configuration for POWHEG. Secondly, a benchmark study focussing on the source of perturbative uncertainties in parton showers is presented. The study employs leading order plus parton shower simulations as a starting point in order to establish a baseline set of controllable uncertainties. The aim of which is to build an understanding of the uncertainties associated with a full simulation which includes higher-order corrections and interplay with non- perturbative models. The uncertainty estimates for a number of benchmark processes are presented. The requirement that these estimates be consistent across the two distinct parton show implementations in Herwig provided an important measure to assess the quality of these uncertainty estimates. The profile scale choice is seen to be an important consideration with the power and hfact displaying inconsistencies between the showers. The resummation profile scale is shown to deliver consistent predictions for the central value and uncertainty bands. ▼ This final graduation project is done at Handicare Bathroom Safety BV at Pijnacker. Like their name says, they are a manufacturer of safety products in and around the toilet-, shower- and bath environment. These products have a good balance between comfort, safety and design. With 70 years of experience, they are considered specialists in this field all over the world. For this project the main aim is to design a next generation shower seat for the product portfolio of Handicare; LinidoSolutions. The shower seat must be applicable all over the world, therefore apart from the Dutch market, the United Kingdom and Southern Europe (Spain) is taken into account. The “old” shower seat as it is now provides support in a seated posture while showering. Based on the needs of the user, this seat is also foldable and available with/or without backrest and armrests. This seat was introduced in 2003 and was one of the first shower seats produced entirely out of plastic. This has great benefits for the design, ergonomics, costs and production. Nevertheless, feedback has shown frequently arising problems in production methods and procedures. One of the main concerns of this seat is premature tumbling of the seat surface and fractures near the mount and its connections. The folding mechanism is unreliable and the connection is not solid and strong enough for all situations e.g. a transfer from wheelchair is very critical. This results in a large amount of complaints. With the next generation shower seat these problems have to be resolved. Further research shows that users have specific needs and requirements while showering on a shower seat. This has resulted in several project directions whereof the most promising direction is chosen. From the user research it shows that standing up, cleaning of the buttocks area, cleaning of the lower legs/feet and a transfer from wheelchair to seat is very hard to accomplish. This has to do with the disabilities of these users. Based on the chosen target group, the project direction “improvement of the buttocks area” is chosen. Research shows that cleaning of the buttocks area is not possible and very hard in a seated posture. Users have to stand up to properly clean this area. However standing up is an intensive activity for these people. Current products provide hygiene openings, but are still not optimal and very uncomfortable to sit on. From this perspective the main target group is chosen, which is based on the mobility classification of the user. The user can be divided into five categories; scaled from group A with the most mobile people to group E with the lowest degree of mobility. Target group B is chosen as the main target group for the shower seat. This group can be characterized on performing their daily activities in combination with a little help. This help can be provided by a walking aid and/or home care. This group often uses a shower seat, because they are not able to stand for longer periods of time or have an unstable posture. In this thesis, we develop high precision tools for the simulation of slepton pair production processes at hadron colliders and apply them to phenomenological studies at the LHC. Our approach is based on the POWHEG method for the matching of next-to-leading order results in perturbation theory to parton showers. We calculate matrix elements for slepton pair production and for the production of a slepton pair in association with a jet perturbatively at next-to-leading order in supersymmetric quantum chromodynamics. Both processes are subsequently implemented in the POWHEG BOX, a publicly available software tool that contains general parts of the POWHEG matching scheme. We investigate phenomenological consequences of our calculations in several setups that respect experimental exclusion limits for supersymmetric particles and provide precise predictions for slepton signatures at the LHC. The inclusion of QCD emissions in the partonic matrix elements allows for an accurate description of hard jets. Interfacing our codes to the multi-purpose Monte-Carlo event generator PYTHIA, we simulate parton showers and slepton decays in fully exclusive events. Advanced kinematical variables and specific search strategies are examined as means for slepton discovery in experimentally challenging setups.

In dieser Doktorarbeit entwickeln wir Hochpräzisionswerkzeuge für die Simulation der Paarproduktion von Sleptonen in hadronischen Kollisionsprozessen an Teilchenbeschleunigern und verwenden sie für phänomenologische Untersuchungen am LHC. Unser Vorgehen basiert auf der POWHEG Methode für die konsistente Kombination von störungstheoretischen Resultaten in nächstführender Ordnung mit Partonschauern. Wir berechnen die Matrixelemente für die Paarproduktion von Sleptonen sowie für die Produktion eines Sleptonpaares in Assoziation mit einem Jet gemäß störungstheoretischer Methoden der supersymmetrischen Quantenchromodynamik in nächstführender Ordnung. Beide Prozesse implementieren wir anschließend in der POWHEG BOX, einem öffentlich verfügbaren Computerprogramm, das allgemeine Bestandteile des POWHEG Verfahrens enthält. Wir untersuchen phänomenologische Konsequenzen unserer Berechnungen in mehreren supersymmetrischen Massenkonfigurationen unter Beachtung experimenteller Ausschlussgrenzen und treffen präzise Vorhersagen für Sleptonsignaturen am LHC. Eine genaue Beschreibung harter Jets erfolgt durch die Berücksichtigung von QCD-Emissionen in den partonischen Matrixelementen. Partonschauer und Sleptonzerfälle simulieren wir in vollständig exklusiven Kollisionsereignissen durch die Anbindung unserer Implementierungen an das Monte-Carlo-Programm PYTHIA. Le Collisionneur Linéaire International ILC est un projet de collisionneur électron-positon développé pour prendre le relais du Grand Collisionneur de Hadrons LHC. Ce projet permettra d'étudier précisément les caractéristiques du nouveau boson de 125 GeV , découvert en 2012 par les expérience CMS et ATLAS, compatible avec le boson de Higgs du modèle standard. Cette expérience pourrait aussi permettre aux physiciens de mettre à jour des phénomènes physiques inconnus. Pour exploiter au maximum ce nouvel accélérateur, deux collaborations travaillent sur le développement de deux détecteurs : le Grand Détecteur International ILD et le Détecteur au Silicium SiD. Ces détecteurs sont dits généralistes et sont optimisés pour la mise en oeuvre de technique de suivi des particules. Ils sont constitués d'un trajectographe dans leur partie centrale et de systèmes de calorimétrie. L'ensemble est inséré dans un aimant supraconducteur, lui même entouré d'une culasse instrumentée avec des chambres à muon. Le groupe lyonnais dans lequel j'ai effectué mes travaux de recherche pendant mon doctorat, a grandement participé au développement du calorimètre hadronique à lecture semi-digitale. Ce calorimètre ultra-granulaire fait partie des options pour le calorimètre hadronique du Grand Détecteur International. Un prototype a été construit en 2011. D'environ 1 m3, il est constitué de 48 chambres à plaque résistive de verre, comporte plus de 440000 canaux de lecture de 1 cm2 et pèse environ 10 tonnes. Ce calorimètre répond aux contraintes imposées pour le Collisionneur Linaire International (une haute granularité, une consommation électrique faible, une alimentation pulsée etc) et est régulièrement testé sur des lignes de faisceau au CERN. Les données ainsi collectées m'ont permis d'étudier en détail le phénomène de gerbe hadronique. De nombreux efforts ont été réalisé pour développer des méthodes efficace de reconstruction de l'énergie des gerbes hadroniques et pour améliorer la résolution en énergie du prototype SDHCAL. La simulation des gerbes hadroniques dans le SDHCAL constitue une part importante de mes travaux de recherche. Une simulation réaliste des chambres à plaque résistive de verre a été développée en étudiant la réponse du prototype au passage de muons et de gerbes électromagnétiques. J'ai alors confronté les modèles de simulation des gerbes hadroniques avec des données expérimentales. La granularité du SDHCAL rend aussi possible des études fines sur la topologie des gerbes hadroniques, notamment sur leur extension latéraleet longitudinale. J'ai finalement pu étudier, en m'appuyant sur mes travaux de simulations, la reconstruction de la masse des bosons W et Z dans une simulation complète du Grand Détecteur International. The purpose of this report is to investigate the possibilities with drain water heat recovery (DWHR) in residential buildings. Information and relevant theory has been collected and summarized in this report. Calculations have been done for given scenarios to evaluate profits. DWHR heat exchangers use simple technology and have long life-time. The heat exchanger is connected to outgoing drainage pipe and incoming cold-water supply so countercurrent flow is accomplished. This makes it possible to increase the temperature of the incoming cold-water and thereby decrease the amount of energy used to heat water. There are mainly two types of models on the markets, vertically and horizontally heat exchangers. DWHR can be cost-effective if installed during new constructions or renovation, otherwise installation costs can be quite expensive. An installation of a DWHR-unit means no increasing risks of bacteria growth (legionella). Approximately 20 % of the energy used to heat hot-water can be counted as internal heat gain, with a DWHR heat exchanger the amount increases which will result in less energy consumed in the room heating system. More development of existing models is required to reduce the prices and spread information. A big advantage with DWHR is that the energy need for heating water is quite constant during the whole year compared to other demands, for example room-heating. Results from calculations in this report show that a reduction of 43 % of the heating demand for hot-water could be made in a normal family house and 17 % reduction could be made in a residential building with fifty apartments.

Syftet med arbetet är att undersöka möjligheterna med att återvinna värme från spillvatten i bostäder. Fakta och relevant teori inom området har samlats ihop och sammanfattats i denna rapport. Egna beräkningar har gjorts för att utvärdera hur mycket det är möjligt att återvinna. Tekniken för spillvattenvärmeväxling är enkel och växlarna håller i regel länge och kräver inget underhåll. En spillvattenvärmeväxlare kopplas in så att motströmsvärmeväxling uppnås. En växlare ansluts till utgående spillvattenledning och inkommande kallvattenledning. Ett problem är att de större växlarna för flerbostadshus kan vara platskrävanade och dyra. En installation av en växlare lämpar sig bäst vid nybyggnation för både småhus och flerbostadshus. Vid renoveringar av miljonprogrammen som uppfördes på 1960–70-tal finns det goda möjligheter att installera spillvattenvärmeväxlare då man genom exempelvis en stamrenovering gör ingrepp på befintliga ledningar, detta kan minska installationskostnaderna. Det finns inga tillkommande risker för legionellabakterier med spillvattenvärmeväxlare. Mer utveckling borde ske inom området så att nya modeller tillkommer. För nuvarande är den vertikala växlaren liten och passar bäst i småhus medan den horisontella växlaren passar bättre vid större anläggningar, med utveckling kan modellerna anpassas så de kan fungera oavsett användningsområde. ▼ This thesis details work performed in the Distributed Array Shower Head (DASH) and Pocket Rocket systems over the past three years, and is targeted at use in surface processing applications. The DASH source produces plasma in an array of hollow cathodes. Pocket Rocket is a geometrically similar analogue to a single hollow cathode in the DASH source, used for its superior optical access. The work aims to investigate the physics that underpins the operation of such a plasma source. To characterise the expansion plumes from the hollow cathodes, two dimensional maps of ion densities in argon are measured using a Langmuir probe. A peak density of 1E18 per cubic metre is measured at the interface between hollow cathode and expansion chamber. Downstream of the plasma plume, densities are as low as 1E14 per cubic metre. Plasma density in the plume has a 1/z squared dependence, as plasma freely diffuses into the expansion chamber. Further downstream, there is an abrupt change in behaviour as the plasma density becomes nearly constant with increasing distance from the hollow cathode. A compensated Langmuir probe is used in conjunction with an emissive probe to make spatially resolved measurements of the plasma potential, floating potential, and electron energy probability function (EEPF). Inside the hollow cathode a Maxwellian distribution is observed with an electron temperature of 2 eV. The EEPFs measured in the plume show bi-Maxwellian behaviour, before becoming a single Maxwellian with temperatures as high as 11 eV far from the source. To investigate its etching capabilities, the DASH source is also operated using SF6 to produce atomic fluorine and to chemically etch unbiased silicon. Etch rates of up to 3.2 micrometres per minute are measured using a profilometer. Scanning Electron Microscopy of some processed wafers demonstrates the isotropic profile expected of the chemical etching process. It is shown that scaling of the DASH source to process a 300 mm wafer with uniformity of plus-minus 5% uniformity of etch rate is possible. To investigate the possible use of DASH in deposition processes, optical experiments on hydrogen plasma with a pressure on the order of 1 Torr are performed in Pocket Rocket. Two operational modes are observed, named the diffuse and the bright modes after their respective appearances. Fulcher alpha spectroscopy yields gas temperatures of approximately 350 K for the diffuse mode and 500 K in the bright mode. Temperature is observed to be independent of pressure but strongly dependent on power. Pocket Rocket is also investigated using an intensified CCD (ICCD) camera for spatially resolved, sub-rf cycle imaging of Balmer alpha emission. The diffuse mode is found to be operating as a typical gamma capacitive discharge, while the bright mode displays evidence of some degree of inductive coupling. The bright mode has high enough gas temperatures to precipitate the formation of a supersonic shock as gas expands from the hollow cathode. ▼ Evidence suggest for those who have successfully committed suicide in the form of asphyxiation inside locked facilities are more than likely due to patient bathroom doors. The current unit consists of 30 inpatient medical-psychiatric beds serving the adult and geriatric populations. The goal is to ensure patient safety by removing patient bathroom doors and replacing them with breakaway shower curtains for those exhibiting direct signs and symptoms of suicidal ideations with a plan. The specific aim is to improve patient outcomes by decreasing the number of deaths or attempted suicides. With great results, this type of project has been implemented within other acute psychiatric settings, which is considered best practice in acute mental health. Suicide has ranked in the top five most frequently reported events to the Joint Commission since 1995 (Joint Commission, 2010). A random sample questionnaire was distributed to 20 fulltime behavioral health registered nurses, which yielded16 completed questionnaires. Of the 16 completed questionnaires, 13 of the nurses (81%) were in favor of this project. Un vaste programme international est en cours pour déterminer les paramètres du phénomène d'oscillation des neutrinos et approfondir la connaissance de la matrice de mélange des neutrinos (MNSP). Le détecteur OPERA, qui est installé dans le laboratoire souterrain du Gran Sasso en Italie, a pour but principal de mettre en évidence l'apparition de neutrinos de type tau dans un faisceau de neutrinos initialement de type muon, produit au CERN (CNGS) 730 km en amont. Il est aussi en mesure de détecter les oscillations des neutrinos muon en neutrinos électron, donnant accès au paramètre de mélange sin(2θ13)2, où θ13 est le dernier angle de la matrice MNSP finalement déterminé en 2012 conjointement par Daya Bay, RENO et Double Chooz. Pour déterminer la présence des ντ dans le faisceau, le détecteur OPERA est composé de cibles calorimétriques utilisant une alternance de plaques de plomb et de films d'émulsion. Ceux-ci permettront de reconstruire les traces des particules chargées résultant des interactions neutrino avec une précision inégalable (de l'ordre du micron). La recherche des événements de signal d'oscillation νµ → νe sera basée sur l'aptitude à identifier les électrons, à rejeter les événements de fond où un π0 est produit et à soustraire le fond dominant intrinsèque provenant du faisceau. Ce travail de thèse a pour objectif l'élaboration de méthodes d'analyse pour améliorer les performances du détecteur OPERA dans la recherche d'oscillations νµ → νe .

An international program is ongoing to measure the neutrino oscillation phenomenon and to determine the neutrino mixing matrix (MNSP) parameters. OPERA is a long-baseline neutrino experiment located at the Gran Sasso Laboratory in Italy, 730~km from CERN, downstream in the CNGS neutrino beam. The OPERA experiment is designed and optimised for a direct appearance search of νµ → ντ oscillations. It can also detect the νµ → νe oscillation driven by sin(2θ13)2 , where θ13 is the last mixing angle finally measured by the Daya Bay, RENO, and Double Chooz experiments in 2012. To observe the presence of ντ interactions in the beam, the OPERA detector is composed of calorimetric targets made of a modular structure called the "brick": a sandwich of lead plates interspaced with emulsion layers. The latter allows reconstructing tracks of charged particles produced in the neutrino interactions with a micrometric resolution. The search for the νµ → νe oscillation signal is based on the capability of identifying the electrons, rejecting background events where neutral pions are produced and keeping under control the intrinsic and dominant background source from the beam contamination. This work aims to elaborate analysis methods to improve the OPERA detector performance in the νµ → νe oscillation search.
