▼ This study aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the lived experiences of adolescents with regard to
sexual harassment within the school environment. It was considered in the light of actual cases reported on the Cape Flats in the Western Cape where adolescent girls sought counselling after being sexually harassed over a period of time, and were eventually sexually assaulted on their school grounds, by their peers. A qualitative methodological approach was utilised, and the sample was made up of nine adolescent females and one adolescent male between the ages of 15 and 17 years, who were asked to participate on a voluntary basis. Their selection followed purposive sampling at two selected high schools on the Cape Flats in the Western Cape. The research instrument used was an unstructured interview with an open-ended question to allow the participant to share openly and freely. Sound ethical considerations were taken into account throughout the study. Phenomenology was used as a theoretical framework and the data was analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The four key themes, or essence of the adolescents’ lived experiences, that emerged for the study were: (1) boys don’t respect girls’ sexuality, (2) boys demonstrate power over girls, (3) girls who are sexually harassed at school are publicly humiliated, (4) reporting procedures at schools are inadequate. From the themes I concluded that for the girls, key principles relating to human rights within the South African Constitution were being violated; namely, the right to non-discrimination, the right to human dignity and the right to a safe school environment. Recommendations were made that address the role of the national and regional education departments as well as that of social workers.

▼ The present research analysed how the media, specifically newspaper articles, construct
sexual violence towards women, with the aim of investigating why cultural misconceptions about rape persist. Language use in the articles is examined using discursive psychology, and three constructions were closely analysed: the rapist, the rape, and the woman, each containing several themes and descriptive features, with a basis in historical rape myths. Findings suggested that these constructions are mainly used to manage accountability, maintain a narrow definition of rape, and attribute responsibility. The implications for wider society’s cultural conceptions are observed, and a secondary commentary on how these constructions have progressed since early second wave feminism is provided.

▼ This thesis will examine why the outsiders to society are more susceptible to violence, particularly sexual violence. America has been led predominantly by white males, white males who have oppressed individuals who do not fit into the white male majority for years. It is my argument that when women of color are born, they are automatically labeled as outsiders due to their race and gender. An outsider is simply one who does not fit into a particular group, the group in this case being white males. While some white women experience sexual violence, their socioeconomic status and race often allows them to receive justice, especially if their perpetrator is a man of color. I will also examine other factors that lead to sexual violence, particularly rape for these outsiders, such as social class and age. This thesis analyzes three primary texts: the 2010 novel Bitter in the Mouth by Monique Truong, the 2012 novel The Round House by Louise Erdrich, and the 1982 novel The Color Purple by Alice Walker. The women in these novels, Linda, Geraldine, and Celie, respectively are sexually assaulted. It is my argument that women of color’s race/ethnicity make them more susceptible to violence, both physical and sexual, from others. These texts showcase how women are labelled as outsiders because of their races and their gender, creating a dual outsider status in the white male dominated America; thus, making them more vulnerable to sexual assault and less likely to receive justice.

▼ Sexual violence in schools is a pervasive problem that is not confined to South Africa. It is a global issue which has been going on for years and is escalating at an alarming rate (Burton & Leoschut, 2012; Human Rights Watch, 2001; Leach & Humphreys, 2007; Leach, 2013,).
Previous studies on
sexual violence have focused on girls as victims. There is less literature on
sexual violence as it affects boys/men or that is perpetrated by girls/women to girls/women. There is also very little information on school-related
sexual violence perpetrated by women/girls to boys/men or by boys/men to boys/men. This study approached
sexual violence in schools from teachers’ perspectives. The study intended to explore teachers’ understandings of
sexual violence practices as perpetrated by/to anyone within the school setting and the forces fuelling and shaping reporting or lack of reporting on the
subject. It also explores how
sexual violence affects teachers emotionally and professionally. This study was conducted in KwaZulu-Natal, one of the nine provinces in South Africa, using survey and a focus group discussion with teachers. It is a qualitative study, taking an interpretive stance using Freire’s concepts of ‘culture of silence’ and conscientization as its lens.
Findings in this study demonstrate that teachers are aware of the high levels of
sexual violence practices happening in schools.
Sexual violence incidents in schools are not limited to incidents occurring between learners, but at times, educators fall victim to
sexual violence or are accused of perpetrating
sexual violence. Findings in the study confirmed that more girls/women than boys/men are victims of
sexual violence practices in schools and most of the perpetrators are boys or males. A significant number of teacher-perpetrated incidents were reported.
Fear and protection were found to be the key factors behind underreporting of incidents. School management teams were regularly blamed for not taking stringent measures and not enforcing policies or taking action against perpetrators to curb the problem.

▼ Sexual violence in U.S. military communities is a serious public health problem. The Department of Defense with significant recommendations and enforcement by Congress has taken step to address the problem. However, the effort has not captured the true magnitude of the problem. Current reports of sexual violence in military communities focuses on sexual assaults of military members and fails to account for military family members, DoD employees, and their family members who form military communities. In order to combat sexual violence in military communities, a comprehensive approach to sexual violence must be used that includes all community members and all types of sexual violence. The overall purpose of this study was to examine how military programs are executed, if policies related to sexual violence are meeting stated goals and recommendations, and to understand how perceptions of sexual violence in military communities could be affecting Americans and military recruitment efforts. To better understand sexual violence in military communities a non-traditional dissertation approach was utilized. The report of the results and findings are found in three individual manuscripts. The first two manuscripts, a scoping review and policy analysis, show that current military sexual violence programs are disjointed and confusing for those who have experiences sexual violence in military communities, and that the most current sexual harassment policy fails to incorporate recommendations from the Government Accountability Office and meet their intended goals. The third manuscript reports a survey conducted to explore the extent a person’s perceptions of sexual violence in military communities affect their decision to not join the U.S. military and how their gender influences their decision. Overall, this manuscript found more than a quarter of participants, regardless of their gender, stated their perceptions of sexual violence in military communities affects their decision to not join the U.S. military. This dissertation presents an innovative approach to understanding sexual violence in military communities. By looking at sexual violence from three different perspectives, it furthers our understanding of current approaches, policies, and the effect of sexual violence in military communities.

▼ The prevalence of
sexual violence (SV) within the college population is alarmingly high. Experiences of SV may lead to numerous negative academic, physical, and psychological consequences. Recent calls to action emphasize the importance that universities address this serious public health concern. The overall purpose of this dissertation is to explore the role of student health centers (SHCs) in addressing campus SV. This dissertation has three main aims: (1) to examine current research literature on SV in the college undergraduate student population with a specific focus on student disclosure and campus resources and services, (2) to describe SV practices of SHCs located on university campuses in the state of Florida, and (3) to explore students’ perspectives of SHCs’ role in addressing campus SV. Aim 1 was addressed through a systematic review of the literature. Then, Aims 2 and 3 were addressed by conducting a two-phase study with multiple study designs. To address aim 1, studies were identified through systematic searches of PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycInfo of articles published between January 2010 and February 2015. After screening, 16 articles were included in this review. Results demonstrated a lack of consistency in how SV was referred to and measured. Research on college student SV disclosure was found to have been primarily conducted in six areas: (1) informal disclosure, (2) formal disclosure, (3) friends’ perceptions of disclosure, (4) process/effects of disclosure on the survivor, (5) barriers to disclosure, and (6) social support in the disclosure process. Research related to campus SV resources and services primarily focused on: (1) students’ knowledge, (2) students’ utilization, and (3) students’ suggestions. To address aim 2, a cross-sectional, observational study design was used. Institutional level data was collected from 33 SHCs from November 2015 through January 2016. Data was collected from SHC representatives through use of a telephone administered survey. The majority of SHCs screen for SV. Not all use effective screening strategies. Further, the majority of screening questions used are not specific to SV, but rather focus on general abuse and/or intimate partner
violence (IPV). Finally, to address aim 3, a qualitative, descriptive research design was used. Data were collected from thirty-seven female undergraduate students in March 2016. Four focus groups were conducted and analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. Three themes emerged: (1) supports and barriers to using SHCs for SV; (2) SHCs’ responsibility to educate students about SV; and (3) SHCs’ responsibility to use campus-wide, comprehensive SV efforts. This dissertation follows the three manuscript option. Chapter One provides an overview of the issue of campus SV and introduces this dissertation’s purpose, aims, and methodology. Chapters Two through Four consist of publication-ready manuscripts presenting the results for Aims 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Finally, Chapter Five presents a summary, introduces additional findings, and…

▼ Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
This study’s aims were to investigate and address the needs, experiences and concerns of women survivors of sexual assault when they choose to take legal action in relation to sexual violence. Stage 1 of this study conducted in-depth interviews with nine survivors who had attended court in relation to sexual assault between 2010-2012. Analysis of in-depth interviews found that each of the participants reported being re-traumatised by the legal system, as well as having experienced various systemic difficulties and obstacles during the legal process, including lack of adequate support, information and court preparation, societal victim-blaming myths and attitudes and frequent legal delays. Stage 2 of this research involved conducting focus groups with 21 key stakeholders working with survivors of sexual assault. Thematic analysis of focus groups found that stakeholder concerns mirrored the difficulties survivors experienced. Stakeholder concerns included the issue of re-traumatisation of survivors by the legal process, as well as the issue of legal delays and survivor powerlessness, and frustrations regarding the societal myths and attitudes that continue to judge and blame those who experience sexual violence. Interview and focus group findings of the current study are consistent with Australian and international research, which has found that survivors who choose to take legal action after sexual assault are typically re-traumatised, disempowered and insufficiently informed, prepared and supported as they navigate the legal journey. The “Women of Courage” program was developed in response to the findings of the in-depth interviews and focus groups conducted in Stages 1 and 2 of this study. The Third Stage of this study entailed the development, facilitation and evaluation of a pilot group court preparation and support intervention, “Women of Courage,” for women in the process of taking legal action in response to sexual violence. The eight-week group program aimed to address and ameliorate the issue of survivor re-traumatisation and powerlessness, offering a holistic approach to supporting participants during the legal journey. This was achieved through the provision of comprehensive psycho-education and information on all aspects of the legal process, as well as through the delivery of evidence-based resilience-enhancing skills and strategies including mindfulness training, distress tolerance and emotion regulation skills. This innovative, evidence-based pilot program was conducted at a Sexual Assault Service in regional New South Wales and offered a setting in which participants felt safe and supported and had the opportunity to learn relevant skills required for navigating the legal process. The program also offered longer-term social and emotional support to participants who identified themselves as experiencing social isolation and lack of emotional support. Long-term support included the provision of ongoing counselling with a one-on-one counsellor following…

▼ The current study assessed a classification of
sexual offenders from combinations of crime scene evidence and case data. It sought to contribute a unique perspective to the
sexual offender typology literature by utilizing data obtained from the Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (ViCAP) database—a nationally populated violent crime database maintained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Use of ViCAP data allowed for information to be obtained about
sexual offenders who were not necessarily in mental health treatment programs and/or criminal custody, thereby enabling the examination of offenders that may not have been investigated in previous research. The present study also sought to expand upon previous typology literature by focusing on offender crime scene behaviors rather than offender motive since law enforcement often needs to begin their approach to a case investigation and offender identification and apprehension based on what is viewed at a crime scene. Data collected from the ViCAP database were analyzed to explore the heterogeneity of 4,476 sexually violent adult males who offended against adult females. The following domains were chosen as initial variables of interest: 1) use of potentially deadly force, 2) offender approach (i.e., blitz, con, and surprise), 3) use of restraints, 4) infliction of unusual assault/trauma, 5) type of
sexual activity, 6) major trauma location, and 7) use of a weapon. After considering univariate entropy results for the initial variables, use of restraints, certain types of
sexual activity, and use of a weapon were eliminated from the analyses based on low scores. Seven offender groups were identified through use of latent class analysis (LCA) on the remaining variables. Results indicated that offender approach is an important differentiating variable for offenders, particularly among those who did not exhibit sadistic offense behaviors. In addition, major trauma location was found to be important in differentiating between two groups of offenders who exhibited sadistic assault characteristics, with one sadistic group concentrating its trauma to
sexual regions of the body while the other displayed high probabilities of trauma infliction on all areas of the body. The current study expands upon previous typology research by analyzing sexually violent offenders who were not necessarily in mental health treatment programs or criminal custody based on their crime scene behaviors separate from offender motivation. It provides a framework which future research can use to examine combinations of objective crime scene behaviors, self-reported offender motivations and fantasies, and offender psychopathology and personality in order to present a comprehensive approach that is useful to both law enforcement and mental health professionals.

▼ Using the feminist critique of the cognitive model of
trauma, this study explored the potential mediating effects of
self-compassion (self-warmth and self-criticism) on the association
between experiencing
sexual violence and negative mental health
outcomes. Race and
sexual orientation were explored as contextual
variables. The sample consisted of 368 women (88.6% white, 94.6%
heterosexual/straight) recruited from two semesters of a large
undergraduate class who completed an online survey at three time
points throughout the semester. A path analysis revealed that
having experienced
sexual violence prior to the beginning of the
semester was positively associated with self-criticism, anxiety,
depression, and PTSD symptoms at the end of the semester directly
and indirectly through self-compassion mid-semester. Specifically,
while there was evidence that self-criticism amplified the negative
effect of
sexual violence on mental health outcomes, there was
limited evidence that self-warmth buffered these effects. Future
research is needed on how survivors of
sexual violence are
conceptualizing the core concepts of self-compassion in order to
improve both measurement and treatment.

▼ This study is a cultural investigation into rape, with specific focus on the role of African men.
With more than 70 000 cases of rape and
sexual violence reported in a year in South Africa,
and estimations that this may reflect one ninth of the actual number only, South Africa has
been labelled the “rape capital” of the world. The study seeks to explain the root causes of
rape, its ontological make-up and possibilities for resolving the issue by identifying cultural
aspects, factors and manifestations that either justify or sanction rape.
Four concepts, namely, rape, masculinity, culture and rage, serve as the thematic lens for
identifying and interrogating cultural conditions through multidisciplinary and Africancentred
perspectives. The analyses contained in the study are based on a mapping process
involving comparing the data from a wide range of literature and also focus group interviews.
Highlighting the multi-layered complexities of rape as phenomena, the study then outlines
recommendations for transformative work in research, cultural institutions, communities,
families and men

▼ In this dissertation I turn to writing as a method for exploring trauma as a progression of sensations, the complexity of which I argue cannot be comprehensively understood through either clinical response or theoretical models. These models, I argue, have the effect of shaping trauma by delineating what comes to count as a traumatic event, and how such events should be felt and responded to. What I put forward is a piece of work that approaches traumatic sensation in a way that is sensitive to its nuances. I focus specifically on sexual trauma, identifying sexual violence survivors as frequently having to align with the ‘shape’ of trauma in cultural, clinical, and juridical registers in order to appear to be presenting traumatic responses that are anticipated as ‘normal’. The novel hook of this dissertation is that it moves between fiction and theory to provide an experimental plane for discussion. Drawing on Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s concept of the ‘writing-machine’ I compose the narrative – Harriet – in which I foreground the capacity of fiction to directly affect the way that trauma is perceived and thought about. The protagonist of Harriet follows the unpredictable and often unexpected sensations of her own sexual trauma, drawing attention to the idea that trauma is impossible to universally characterise. Taking further insight from Ann Cvetkovich, Sara Ahmed, Lauren Berlant, and Henri Bergson, I complement the narrative with conversations that are separated into ‘plateaus’. These plateaus move consecutively to critique existing clinical and theoretical trauma literature, provide feminist considerations for writing as a method, and – turning more closely to Deleuze – problematise the event of trauma. The overarching imperative of this dissertation is to provide relief from the ‘shape’ of trauma, so that all of its iterations and manifestations can be felt through on one’s own terms.

▼ In this project, I examine the rhetorical patterns that silence or expose wartime
sexual assault in U.S. culture from World War II, the Vietnam War, and the contemporary War on Terror. Through rhetorical analysis of military rhetoric, film, journalism, and photography, I argue that institutional narratives deploy rape as a political trope by exploiting narratives of
sexual abuse in ways that promote war and inhibit justice for survivors. These narratives are patterned by a "melodramatic frame," which emphasizes feminine vulnerability and racialized villainy to construct a heroic national identity. By depicting
sexual violence as a crime committed by inherently deviant individuals rather than a byproduct of institutionalized patriarchal norms, the melodramatic frame privileges individualism over collectivity. I then juxtapose this institutional discourse with resistant voices found personal narratives, dissent, and advocacy efforts that counter the melodramatic frame. Not only do these narratives further critique melodrama by demonstrating its inadequacy in capturing the complexity of material experiences, but they also provide effective rhetorical models that invite us to see the cultural and systemic factors that exacerbate wartime
sexual violence. These resistant discourses demonstrate what I call a "healing heroism," which challenges melodramatic tendencies toward caricature and polarization. In doing so, they unsettle harmful gender and racial norms by reimagining notions of vulnerability, heroism, and villainy.

▼ Using Nancy Fraser’s (2007a) tripartite model of justice as a theoretical backdrop, this thesis critically evaluates the United Nation’s (UN) International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), in relation to how this Tribunal has both secured and limited opportunities to ’do’ justice for
sexual violence (SV) victims. This thesis applies a gendered approach to Fraser’s model, and considers how justice has been secured by women, based on principles of recognition, redistribution and representation.
Using documentary methods, the thesis analyses ICTR cases concerning SV, to determine how this Tribunal has responded to SV committed against women and girls throughout the Rwandan genocide. This thesis demonstrates that, while the Tribunal has secured some level of justice for SV victims by successfully indicting, prosecuting and punishing some individuals responsible for SV, these crimes have been constructed and responded to in ad hoc and skewed ways. The analysis shows that crimes of SV, as well as its victims, are underrepresented in the ICTR. It also demonstrates that where SV has been addressed, the institutional culture and framework of this Tribunal has marginalised the voice of women, and allowed for discriminatory and insensitive court practices to permeate judicial proceedings. SV victims, who continue to struggle with redistributive injustices, have been negatively impacted by these ICTR practices

▼ Sexual consent programmes for secondary schools have received more recent attention within New Zealand, yet no in-depth research has examined what an inclusive programme may look like. This project assists in addressing this gap in literature, by exploring the challenges of developing programmes for diverse student populations, between 13-18 years old, which will be meaningful and impactful. This project was guided by an intersectional feminist framework and employed a qualitative approach to this work. Semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted with ten young people who had participated in
sexual consent programmes while they were in secondary school. Interviews were conducted with five key informants. All had extensive knowledge of
sexual violence and experience developing and/or delivering
sexual consent programmes to young people. This study found that mandatory
sexual health programmes within secondary schools often maintained risk focussed approach to
sexual consent education, which had a detrimental impact on young women in this study, by denying their
sexual agency and reinforcing victim blaming attitudes and stereotypical gender roles. These programmes oversimplified consent negotiations and failed to consider how this process becomes more complex through the influence of social and contextual factors. The findings also revealed variation between and within the diverse identity groups of young people. Multiple programmes were found to approach consent education through a dominantly Pakeha lens and were underpinned by the assumption of heterosexuality. There are strategies facilitators could implement, such as incorporating the use of gender fluid language and the inclusion of existing value frameworks into programmes to make the content more relevant to all young people. The findings of this project assists the ongoing development and delivery of consent programmes by drawing attention to considerations facilitators should be aware of when catering to diverse student populations.

▼ "This thesis explores the issue of Sexual Gender-Based Violence in the Democratic of Congo, focusing specifically on the Eastern region of the country. An analysis of the United Nations peacekeeping operation forms a large part the study because the operation remains the most significant multilateral attempt to protect Congolese civilians from sexual violence and other human rights abuses. The objective of the thesis is to highlight the issue of Sexual Gender-Based Violence, describe the background to the continued violence in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and offer an explanation of the causal factors behind the sexual crimes being perpetrated. By also focusing on the efforts of the peacekeeping operation this work will attempt to identify any obstacles to protecting civilians, and how these might be overcome. The method of research is based on analysis of secondary sources, including official United Nations report, journal articles, reports of non-governmental organizations, and media coverage of the region. This research is supplemented by primary source interviews with individuals working on, or with direct knowledge of, the Eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The research has unveiled the deep complexity of the conflict occurring in the East and shows that a combination of factors, that include poverty and lack of development, are creating an environment conducive to unlawful and destructive behavior. Equally complex is the task of finding a solution. However, one realization is clear, the region, and the wider country, need several issues to be addressed simultaneously. Developing the country's infrastructure and boosting its economy should be significant priorities. Alongside this is a reform of the security sector, which will not only safeguard the rule of law, but also ensure the future safety of civilians. "

▼ There are ideas and theories about how posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) starts and gets worse. People develop PTSD in different ways; some develop it very quickly and it is very bad, while others develop it slowly and it may not affect them much at all. The first signs and symptoms may be the best place to look, much like when you first get a cough or a sore throat with a cold or the flu. Generally, research suggests that common reactions are re-living the trauma and having reactions like being on guard all the time. Being on guard all the time also may be one of those important symptoms that will help predict if someone will get PTSD, as well as experiencing things such as thinking harsh things about oneself. This dissertation included reports from people after they had experienced trauma in order to figure out those first symptoms. Then, it used those first symptoms to predict how bad their PTSD was in the weeks and months later. Participants included college women who experienced
sexual assault and domestic
violence within the past 2 years. The results showed that people often re-live the trauma, but it may not be the most important when predicting whether they will get PTSD or not. Negative thoughts and beliefs about oneself were the most important set of reactions when predicting who will get PTSD and how badly. More importantly, the earlier they had those negative thoughts, the worse their PTSD was in the coming weeks and months.

▼ In the Netherlands, around 100,000 people become a victim of
sexual violence each year, 90% of which are female, and mostly between 12-24 years old. ‘’
Sexual violence is a term used for all
sexual acts that someone is forced to perform, undergo or see. It may involve
sexual assault, rape or
sexual abuse.’’ (Centrum Seksueel Geweld, 2019). The consequences on victims’ lives are severe. Victims can experience mental, physical and/or social problems, affecting their daily lives and sometimes lasting a lifetime if left untreated. 98% of the victims don’t look for help due to feelings of shame, fear and guilt (Bicanic, 2018). The aim of this thesis is to propose a design solution to aid with the processing of
sexual violence, to specifically design for female victims (between 12-24 years old at the time of the event) of
sexual violence in a way that reduces the negative effects on their daily lives. The research phase focused on defining the negative effects and finding opportunity areas, using elements of ViP and systemic design methods. Based on literature and field research, the broad context of support after
sexual violence was built. The research included interviewing victims and experts in the field. Insights were gathered in a system map, which visualized all stakeholders and their relations. The problems victims experience were listed and discussed. Themes were identified and formed the basis for a worldview, summarizing the current meaning of
sexual violence in the Netherlands. Based on the context research, a vision was formed including a framing statement, an interaction vision and design boundaries. Firstly, the most important stakeholders in the system were defined: the victim herself and her loved ones. The negative effect which needed to be addressed was the deteriorating bond between the victim and her loved ones, due to misunderstanding and ignorance of loved ones around the effects of
sexual violence. Following this, the statement goal was to make a loved one feel confident in engaging with the victim by facilitating the sharing of insecurities in a playful way. This vision formed the basis for ideation. Ideation involved a generative session, individual ideation as well as rapidly prototyping ideas. The outcome was a working mechanism ensuring the sharing of insecurities. This mechanism was translated into a design concept, called VORM. VORM is a social game designed to strengthen the bond between a victim of
sexual violence and her friend. The goal of VORM is to meet each other in the middle, by building a bridge towards each other. Players can get closer to each other by asking questions about insecurities and sharing their truths. The elements of the game provide the input for the questions and building the bridge. VORM was validated through user testing of the usability, desirability, effectiveness and sustainability of the game. Experts evaluated the target group fit, accessibility and placement in the care process. The conclusion is that VORM facilitates the sharing of insecurities in a playful…

▼ Previous research suggests that music therapy intervention may be helpful in the healing journey of survivors of
sexual violence. The purpose of this study was to determine: 1. What symptom changes did participants experience as a result of an eight-week music therapy group? 2. How did participants perceive their experiences in an eight-week music therapy group? This mixed methods study was conducted using a one group pretest-posttest concurrent triangulation design. Participants (N=5) completed pretest measures of the TSC-40 and an initial interview before completing an eight-week music therapy group. Upon conclusion of the program, participants (n=4) completed the posttest measures of TSC-40, posttest questionnaire, and semi-structured interview. Participants (n=4) demonstrated overall improvement in TSC-40 full scale and subsets from pretest to posttest suggesting efficacy of music therapy intervention. Furthermore, participants (N=5) reported positive perceptions of the music therapy group. An analysis of qualitative data revealed the eight coded themes of mood modulation, drumming, sense of community, emotional processing, vulnerability/opening, music therapy process, increased comfort, and coping skills. These eight coded subthemes overlapped to reveal the four broader themes of music, exploration and expression of trauma-associated feelings, formation of trust, and perceived positive change. Clinician-delivered interventions in the context of group music therapy have the potential to effect positive change for survivors of
sexual violence. Future research should focus on replication of existing studies to address effectiveness of music therapy intervention across specific survivor subset populations with the goal of determining dosage, optimal program length, and most effective music therapy interventions. As individuals continue to be victimized and survivors continue to come forward, the music therapy field requires the creation and implementation of additional trauma-specific groups to meet the ongoing needs of college-aged survivors of
sexual violence.

▼ Seksuaalirikosten uhrit kohtaavat seksuaalisen väkivallan lisäksi muutakin fyysistä väkivaltaa. Uhrin tutkimuksen osana tehdään fyysinen tutkimus, minkä tarkoituksena on, paitsi selvittää tarvitseeko uhri hoitoa, kerätä tietoa mahdollisista väkivallan merkeistä tulevaa oikeusprosessia varten.

▼ Research has indicated that as males become more sexually aroused they predict themselves as acting more sexually coercive. Additionally, males high in
sexual narcissism also report higher usage of
sexual coercion. The underlying mechanism of these relationships, however, is unclear. The current study proposed three models of
sexual coercion with cognitive decision-making mediating these relationships: an arousal-cognitive model, a narcissism-cognitive model, and an integrated model of
sexual arousal and
sexual narcissism. Heterosexual males (n = 154) completed a study of coercive behaviour both in states of
sexual arousal and non-arousal and responded to a measure of
sexual narcissism. The results suggest that
sexual arousal and
sexual narcissism indirectly affect
sexual coercion through misattribution of partner interest. Additionally,
sexual narcissism moderates the affect of
sexual arousal on
sexual coercion. This is consistent with the idea of
sexual coercion being a product of several factors including contextual, cognitive, and personality variables.

▼ This project completed a partial replication and extension of a prior study (Norton-Baker, Russell, & King, 2018) regarding tactical differences in
sexual perpetration victimization strategies. Respondents (n = 559) completed the Revised
Sexual Experiences Survey-Long Form Perpetrator (SES-LFP) before being assigned to different macro-tactical groups (i.e. Non-Violent, Coercive, Aggressive, Polytactic). Membership to groups of micro-tactics of
sexual perpetration was then assigned (
sexual harassment, non-consensual distribution of
sexual content, voyeurism, exhibitionism,
sexual coercion,
sexual coercion facilitated by substances,
sexual perpetration,
sexual perpetration facilitated by substances, and multiparticipant offenders). Participants completed the PID-5 as well as other measures of maladjustment. Polytactic perpetrators had consistently higher PID-5 domain and facet scores with evidence of other forms of maladjustment (e.g. higher time spent incarcerated, higher rates of job termination, higher rates of relationship instability). Significant differences were found between micro-tactic groups and non-violent controls on both PID-5 scores and other indicators of maladjustment. These findings suggested that perpetrators of
sexual perpetration can be differentiated in both their macro/micro-tactics and levels of personality maladjustment. Systematic efforts to examine tactical differences in perpetrators may enhance the prediction, prevention, and treatment of
sexual perpetration.

▼ Background:
Sexual violence is a serious public health and human rights problem with both short-and long-term consequence on women’s physical, mental,
sexual and reproductive health.
Objective: To assess the prevalence and determinants related to
sexual violence among house maids of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Methods: School based cross sectional study design was conducted among female housemaid students from January 27-march7, 2015 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A total of 473 sample sizes were considered. Multistage sampling techniques were employed. Data was collected using closed ended and open ended self-administered questionnaire. Five percent of the questionnaire was pretested. Data was entered through Epi-data version 3.1 and was analyzed through SPSS version 20. Measurements of central tendency like mean were presented. Odds Ratio and 95% Confidence Interval was calculated for each independent variable against the dependent variables.
Result: A total of 451 housemaid’s had participated with a response rate of 95.3%. The study has indicated that the prevalence of
sexual violence was 28.6%.Housemaid monthly income <300birr were three times [AOR=3.112(1.484, 6.523)] more likely to be sexually violated than those whose monthly income is >450birr. Housemaids whose employer drunk alcohol were 14 times [AOR=14.53(7.62, 27.703)] more likely to be sexually violated compared to those housemaids whose employer do not drink alcohol.
Conclusion and Recommendation
Sexual violence among housemaids is rampant. Low income of the housemaid and alcohol drinking by perpetrator was found to be a risk for
sexual violence. Empowering housemaids to develop self-confidence through education, and improving their ability to find employment and income, along with increasing public awareness of human rights issues is vital.

▼ Sexual violence is overwhelmingly perpetrated by men and the victims are overwhelmingly women, yet
sexual violence prevention is dominated by women and research reflects a lack of work with and by men. To address this gendered imbalance, this research project utilizes a feminist framework to explore how men, in the everyday context, engage with other men to discuss, address, and prevent,
sexual violence. Through the use of semi-structured interviews with male students, this research project finds that men most often engage with issues of
sexual violence with their close male friends through conversation and discussion of
sexual violence- related issues and topics, and by responding to expressions of inappropriate behaviour made by other men to disrupt and show their disapproval. Based on the findings of this research, it is recommended that future research further explore the more subtle and innocuous ways men discuss and navigate issues of
sexual violence with their male friends in everyday social interactions.

▼ Sexual violence at institutions of higher education has been a problem of concern for several decades. In April 2011, the Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights issued the Dear Colleague Letter on
sexual violence. This document offered guidance and recommendations to schools on ways to educate about and respond to
sexual harassment including
sexual violence. Since its release there has been limited research on its impact and university response. The purpose of this study was to learn more about one institution's administrators' response to the Dear Colleague Letter on
sexual violence. A case study design was used to complete the study. The data sources were interviews with administrators, observations, and documents. The participants were five mid-level and higher university administrators. The emergent themes from the study are change, collaboration, support, and human and financial capital. This institution has had an encouraging response, but additional studies at more institutions are needed.

▼ Prior research has documented the role that revealing and concealing interpersonal
violence has on health outcomes for victims (e.g., Ullman, 2010). The present paper aims to add to the existing research by presenting a new model, The Revealing and Concealing Process Model for Interpersonal Trauma, to describe the process that occurs when victims reveal or conceal interpersonal
violence. The second stage of the model (i.e., reasons for revealing/concealing interpersonal
violence) was tested by: 1. Creating a measure to assess the reasons for revealing and concealing interpersonal
violence and 2. Identifying whether getting goals met for revealing/concealing is related to health outcomes for victims. The results suggest the need for a unique measure to assess the reasons for revealing and concealing interpersonal
violence and that getting goals met (especially for revealing) can be related to health outcomes for victims.

▼ According to Encyclopedia Dictionary on Roman Law, the word rape originally derived from the Latin verb "rapere", which means "to seize or take by force" (p.667-768). Rape can be defined as a crime in the criminal statutes of most countries and the criminalization of rape under international law (Abegunde, 2013). However, a search of the Statistics New Zealand website reveals that only nine percent of rapes are registered by police. The U.S Department of State has reported that China had 31,833 rapes in 2007 (Marquez, 2009). This is twice as were recorded in the 2005 statistics (15000) (Marquez, 2009). The crime of rape is an enormous criminal problem in China.

▼ Children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities are sexually abused or assaulted at a rate seven times greater than those without disabilities (Shapiro, 2018). There is a lack of education and prevention programs specifically for this vulnerable population. The purpose of this study was to explore parental perceptions about the need for sexual violence prevention education, based on their child's disability type, severity, and communication level. A 33-item online survey was completed by parents of children with intellectual disabilities (n=61). The majority of parents valued the social validity of providing sexual violence prevention education. A child's disability type did not impact their parent's perception of the need for education. As the severity of a child's disability increased, parents indicated that their child was lacking adequate knowledge about sexual violence prevention. Children with lower levels of communication fluency did not understand sexual abuse and assault prevention. Common parental themes of fears about their child's involvement in sexual violence prevention education included their child's inability to understand or curriculum content and the manner in which education would be provided. Findings inform care providers about the importance of including all children with disabilities in sexual violence prevention education.

The Brazilian Penal Law (1.940) established a system of absolute independence between the stuprum crime and the violent attempt to the decency crime. The autonomy is the cause of some perplexity and injust situations. This mistake elapses from the historical insecurity about the true juridical object injured by the sexual violence crimes. Along the time, they are cited as the religious morale, the habits, the fathers legal authority, the physical virginity, the moral purity, the patrimonial and heritage rights, the sexual freedom, the freedom of loving and the sexual dignity. But none of these objects accommodates with life reality, as this study demonstrates. In fact, it injured the person s human dignity, one of the principal foundations of the Brazilian Republic. This study proposes the acceptance of a conceptual and global law. It is a mixed (mischgesetz) and alternative law, whit only one nucleus, wich execution (constraint) can be done in two ways (by real or psychic violence). The forced carnal conjunction practice summed to any other imposed libidinous act, at the same episode, constitutes a single crime. Besides delating the cited contradictions and incongruities, the proposed solution has considerable extra advantage: the victim does not suffer twice by being examinated to prove or not vaginal penetration, essential to characterise stuprum, however being an irrelevant information for the conceptual law proposed here
