Images acquired with 3 meters of spatial resolution by the airborne HSS (Hyperspectral Scanner System) sensor and field/laboratory reflectance data were used for the spectral characterization and discrimination of urban materials in São José dos Campos city (State of São Paulo, Brazil). HSS data (37 bands between 400 and 2400 nm) were converted from radiance values into atmospherically corrected surface reflectance images using the MODTRAN 4 based radiative transfer code. The flight campaign on May 2006 was preceded by system functioning and sensor calibration tests: assessment of the sensor spatial, spectral and radiometric calibrations, and of the signal-to-noise ratio. A spectral library of urban materials was acquired from field/laboratory measurements and from selected pixel spectra. The influence of band positioning and bandwidth, especially the shortwave infrared (SWIR) interval, on the discrimination of urban materials was investigated through spectral resolution simulation of selected multispectral sensors (QuickBird, HRG/Spot-5 and ETM+/Landsat-7) and from classification information derived from logistic regression analysis. To evaluate the spatial resolution influence on the discrimination of these materials, the HSS image was degraded from 3 to 9 meters of spatial resolution using texture filtering. Finally, spectral identification of specific urban materials of the study area was tested with the Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) and Spectral Feature Fitting (SFF) techniques. Results showed that: (1) the sensor spatial calibration was adequate with a noise below 1.5% in 33 of all 37 available bands in reflective interval when using a scanner frequency up to 25 Hz for imaging. However, spectral tests indicated a deviation of around +17 nm from the original spectral positioning of bands near 940 nm; (2) despite the persistent artifacts in water vapor (940 nm) and CO2 (2050 nm) absorption features, the atmospheric correction was adequate after a small spectral adjustment (less than 17 nm) of the original spectral calibration in the visible/near infrared (VNIR) bands; (3) reflectance pixel spectra of urban materials matched the field measurements, confirming the general featureless nature of the urban spectra, except for signatures of clay ceramic roofs, plastic materials (e.g., PVC and PET) and painted surfaces; (4) a decrease in logistic regression classification accuracy was observed after the simulation of multispectral sensors, but the major impact on classification was due to the absence of the SWIR bands; (5) from the original 3 meters to the degraded 9 meters of spatial resolution, a decrease in classification accuracy was observed only for small objects because of the prevalent and coupled spectral mixture effects of neighboring materials; and, (6) the SAM technique was easily applied over the data and showed better potential of discrimination of urban materials than the SFF technique.

This study examines the use of thermal images obtained from different sensors (different spatial resolutions) at local spatial scales to provide useful tools for scientists interested in smaller-size geophysical phenomena and in complex environmental such as costal zones. The phenomenon in study is the heated effluent jet (plume) produced by the surface discharge a nuclear power plant in Angra dos Reis, Brazil. The images utilized are those obtained from orbital ASTER and airborne HSS (HyperSpectral Scanner System) sensors. The images were acquired almost simultaneously and were analyzed for overlapping concurrent ground-coverage. ASTER TIR scenes had a spatial resolution of 90 m and HSS imagery had a nominal resolution of 7,62m. The fusion algorithm was based on wavelet multiresolution analysis. The wavelet transform enables an image to be examined at different frequency and scale intervals. We used discrete wavelet transform (DWT) for decomposition the two-dimensional (image) signal. The high frequency, small-scale spatial detail in the higher resolution HSS scene was extracted using the high pass filters of the wavelet transform. The result of the low pass filtering of the higher resolution image was completely replaced by the lower resolution ASTER scene. This modified wavelet transform of the higher resolution image was then inverted back. For the low-resolution scene this process resulted in the increased spatial resolution and added high frequency detail. The enhanced spatial resolution was gained without altering the mean magnitudes of lower resolution SST values (ASTER original data). This spectral preserving capacity makes the wavelet method particularly useful when the quality of data is different between the sensors and the measurement accuracy of the lower resolution sensor had to be preserved.

Este trabalho examina o emprego de imagens obtidas na faixa espectral do infravermelho termal através de diferentes sensores com o propósito de fornecer subsídios para cientistas interessados em estudar fenômenos termais de escala local que ocorrem em ambientes marinhos complexos como as zonas costeiras. O fenômeno em estudo é a pluma termal (variações de temperatura associadas com a descarga de água aquecida) que ocorre nas adjacências da Central Nuclear Almirante Álvaro Alberto em Angra dos Reis, no Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. As imagens termais (expressas em temperatura) empregadas são as obtidas através do sensor orbital ASTER, com 90 m de resolução espacial, e do aerotransportado HSS (HyperSpectral scanner System), esta com resolução espacial nominal de 7,62 m. As imagens foram obtidas numa mesma data e hora. Avaliou-se o sensor HSS (Hyperspectral Scanner System) para a caracterização e espacialização de solos da cidade de Manaus - AM, com imagens de 3 metros de resolução espacial. As imagens (37 bandas entre 0,43 – 2,37 mm) foram convertidas de valores de radiância para reflectância de superfície, usando um aplicativo (FLAASH) Fast Line-of-sight Atmospheric Analysis of Spectral Hypercubes baseado no modelo de transferência radiativa MODTRAN 4. Para facilitar a análise das características espectrais da área de estudo e da discriminação dos principais tipos de solos presentes, foram pré-identificadas as classes de solos através do método SAM (Spectral Angle Mapper) antes da coleta das amostras de solo em campo. As correlações entre características dos solos e dados espectrais do sensor (HSS) e curvas espectrais de laboratório e difratométricas foram realizadas em 13 amostras. Por fim, a técnica band math (matemática de banda) foi usada para a espacialização dos teores de argila por meio dos dados HSS e laboratoriais. Os resultados obtidos indicaram que: (a) a correção atmosférica realizada com o aplicativo FLAASH foi apropriada, apesar das dificuldades de plena remoção da feição de vapor d’água em 0,94 μm e na faixa do infravermelho de ondas curtas, próximo de 2,0 mm. No geral, constatou-se coerência dos espectros do sensor HSS com as informações da literatura e dos espectros obtidos em laboratório; (b) foi observada boa capacidade de identificação espectral com o classificador SAM cujos resultados possibilitaram a pré-identificação adequada das classes de solos, bem como ajudaram a definir as áreas onde foram coletadas as amostras de campo; (c) As curvas espectrais representativas das classes de solo para os dados de laboratório e do sensor (HSS) são colacionáveis. Os espectros de reflectância apresentaram coerência entre os dados de raios-X (difratogramas). As correlações entre os dois ambientes de aquisição de dados (laboratório e HSS) são normalmente altas; (d) Os resultados da aplicação do índice ITextura possibilitaram a determinação do teor de argila dos solos por meio das imagens.

HSS (Hyperspectral Scanner System) was evaluated for characterization and spatialization of soils in Manaus AM with 3 meter resolution images. To make easy the analysis of the spectral characteristics of the study area and the classification of the main soil types on the site, they were identified by SAM method (Spectral Angle Mapper) before collecting field soil samples.
