▼ Algorithms are ubiquitous in the computer science literature. Is is very rare to see a publication
in computer science that does not introduce or cite algorithms of some kind or another. It is
therefore necessary to extract and index algorithms for
search and retrieval. In this thesis we
present AlgSeer, a complete architecture for extracting, indexing, and searching for algorithms.
We present related work in the areas of citation analysis, document element extraction and
speciality
search engines that share a similar goal with AlgSeer. We present a complete description
of all the pieces that make up the architecture of AlgSeer and we provide in-depth analysis and
testing of the each function of the system. We extract algorithms from the set of two million
document size CiteSeerX repository and we index and stress test the index of this data. From
this data, we extract over 180 thousand algorithms in an XML format totaling 8.3GB. We also
provide an analysis of the
search showing that our index scales to an extent that far surpasses
any realistic prediction of the trac the system would encounter in any practical scenario with
a 600QPM stress test on the index. The query response time never exceeds 5MS.

▼ A side effect of the growing Internet population is that the number of polyglot users, i.e. people who are proficient in more than one language, is also increasing. Even though the internet has been made more accessible throughout the world,
search engines have seen little improvements to help polyglot users. To better support these individuals, this thesis presents an analysis of multilingual
search results list that would be provided by a
search engine. In order to populate the result list, crowdsourcing is used in order to get real world queries that people actively searched for. The results show that users are able to determine if the
search result is relevant or not faster when the
search result is in their primary language and it takes them longer when the result is in their secondary language. The results are discussed in terms of language proficiency as well as whether a user can make a good judgement about their language proficiency.

Search engine optimization (SEO), as a
multi-million dollar business of search engine marketing, has
seldom been studied from the consumers' perspective. This study
aims to be the first step of researching consumers' reaction to SEO
as a marketing practice and its potential impact on online search
behaviors. Results showed that the general attitude towards the use
of SEO was positive. However, after participants of this study
learned about how SEO worked, their evaluations of search engines
and the websites directed to by search engines decreased. Most of
the participants' online search behaviors remained unchanged except
for the number of different searches conducted. Theoretical and
practical implications are discussed.

▼ Recent advances in sequencing technology have greatly decreased the cost and increased the availability of genomic data. Armed with this rich base of information, it has become feasible to pursue the study of complex diseases, such as preterm birth, which involve complex regulatory networks and bear the traces of our recent evolutionary past. In order to facilitate the study of preterm birth, I created the GEneSTATION pregnancy research database. The development of this database necessitated the creation of the Genestation
Search Engine Toolkit, a novel
search solution able to manage over 77 million records. I designed an extensible ontological model for storing biological data in ElasticSearch that delivers over 1000 times faster performance in high volume queries than pre-existing genome database structures, such as the Generic Model Organism Database Project’s Chado schema. Utilizing this new technology, I created dynamic web-based statistical analysis and visualization tools that enabled
search and exploration of genomic data in real-time. These new technologies will enable researchers to gain a better understanding of their questions in the context of the whole genome and develop a greater intuition of the nature of genomic data.

▼ This thesis describes a novel retrieval model for case retrieval from online medical forums. This model uses semantic query weighting to obtain a more accurate representation of a case query. Semantic query weighting involves identifying descriptive words, such as those describing symptoms or medi- cation, and weighting those terms more heavily during the scoring process while simultaneously lowering the weight of less important words. Our ex- perimental results show that by adding semantic query weighting to Okapi BM25, we are able to achieve, on average, better
search performance when compared with the standard BM25 model. For example, precision at 5 was improved by 8.5% while recall at 100 was improved by 5.31%.
In addition, we describe in detail the techniques required to build a medical forum
search engine using the iKNOWx Forum
Search retrieval model, which would allow a user to
search medical forums for thread discussions that are similar to an input query case. Such a system would be useful in many ways. It can help inform users so they can decide on a best course of action when sick, potentially saving both time and money on healthcare costs. Also, it can easily integrate threads from multiple medical forums, allowing an easy way for users to aggregate information from various sources.

▼ Queries submitted to search engines rarely provide a complete and precise
description of a user's information need.
Most queries are ambiguous to some extent, having multiple interpretations.
For example, the seemingly unambiguous query ``tennis lessons'' might be submitted
by a user interested in attending classes in her neighborhood, seeking lessons
for her child, looking for online videos lessons, or planning to start a business
teaching tennis.
Search engines face the challenging task of satisfying different groups of users
having diverse information needs associated with a given query.
One solution is to optimize ranking functions to satisfy diverse sets of information
needs.
Unfortunately, existing evaluation frameworks do not support such optimization.
Instead, ranking functions are rewarded for satisfying the most likely intent
associated with a given query.
In this thesis, we propose a framework and associated evaluation metrics that are
capable of optimizing ranking functions to satisfy diverse information needs.
Our proposed measures explicitly reward those ranking functions capable of presenting
the user with information that is novel with respect to previously viewed
documents.
Our measures reflects quality of a ranking function by taking into account its
ability to satisfy diverse users submitting a query.
Moreover, the task of identifying and establishing test frameworks to compare
ranking functions on a web-scale can be tedious.
One reason for this problem is the dynamic nature of the web, where documents
are constantly added and updated, making it necessary for search engine developers
to seek additional human assessments.
Along with issues of novelty and diversity, we explore one approximate
approach to compare different ranking functions by overcoming the problem of
lacking complete human assessments.
We demonstrate that our approach is capable of accurately sorting ranking
functions based on their capability of satisfying diverse users, even in the
face of incomplete human assessments.

▼ The purpose of sentiment analysis is to determine the attitude of a writer or a speaker with respect to some topic or his feeling in a document. Thanks to the rise of social media, nowadays there are numerous data generated by users. Mining and categorizing these data will not only bring profits for companies, but also benefit the nation. Sentiment analysis not only enables business decision makers to better understand customers' behaviors, but also allows customers to know how the public feel about a product before purchasing. On the other hand, the aggregation of emotions will effectively measure the public response toward an event or news. For example, the level of distress and sadness will increase significantly after terror attacks or natural disaster. In our project, we are going to build a
search engine that allows users to check the sentiment of his query. Some of previous researches on classifying sentiment of messages on micro-blogging services like Twitter have tried to solve this problem but they have ignored neutral tweets, which will result in problematic results (12). Our sentiment analysis will also be based on tweets collected from twitter, since twitter can offer sufficient and real-time corpora for analysis. We will preprocess each tweet in the training set and label it as positive, negative or neutral. As we use words in the tweet as the feature for our model, different features will be used. We will show that accuracy achieved by different machine learning algorithms (Naïve Bayes, Maximum Entropy) can be improved with a feature vector obtained by using bigrams (5). In our practice, we find that Naive Bayes has better performance than Maximum Entropy.

▼ Users of current web search engines are often presented with a large number of returns after submitting a search term and choosing from the list might lead to them suffering from the effect of “choice overload”, as reported in earlier work. However, these search results are typically presented in an ordered list so as to simplify the search process, which may influence search behaviour and moderate the effect of number of choices. In this thesis, the effects of the number of search returns and their ordering on user behaviour and satisfaction are explored. A mixed methods approach combining multiple data collection and analysis techniques is employed in order to investigate these effects in terms of three specific issues, namely, choice overload in search engine use, variety seeking behaviour in a situation where multiple aspects of search results are required, and the chance of encountering serendipity. The participants were given search tasks and asked to choose from the sets of returns under experimental conditions. The results from the first three experiments revealed that large numbers of search results returned from a search engine tended to be associated with more satisfaction with the selected options when the decision was made without a time limit. In addition, when time was more strongly constrained the choices from a small number of returns led to relatively higher satisfaction than for a large number. Moreover, users’ behaviour was strongly influenced by the ordering of options in that they often looked and selected options presented near the top of the result lists when they perceived the ranking was reliable. The next experiment further investigated the ranking reliance behaviour when potentially useful search results were presented in supplementary lists. The findings showed that when users required a variety of options, they relied less on the ordering and tended to adapt their search strategies to seek variety by browsing more returns through the list, selecting options located further down, and/or choosing the supplementary web pages provided. Finally, with the aim of illustrating how chance encountering can be supported, a model of an automated synonym-enhanced search was developed and employed in a real-world literature search. The results showed that the synonym search was occasionally useful for providing a variety of search results, which in turn increased users’ opportunity to come across serendipitous experiences.

▼ Search engines of today are focusing on efficiently and accurately generating search results.Yet, there is much to be explored in the way people interact with the applications and relate to the content. Individuals are commonly unique, with complex preferences, motives and expectations. Not only is it important to be sensitive to these differences, but to accommodate the extremes. Enhancing a search engine does not only rely on technological development, but to explore potential user experiences in broader perspectives - which not only gratifies the needs for information, but supports a diversity of journeys. The aim of the project is to develop an alternate search engine with different functionality based on new values that reflects contemporary needs. The result, Exposeek, is an experiential prototype supporting exploratory browsing based on principles of distributed infrastructure, transparent computation and serendipitous information. Suggestive queries, legible algorithms and augmented results provide additional insights and present an alternative way to seek and peruse the Web.

▼ Websites are an increasingly important part of how people seek out political information. Many political scientists believe that the web provides diverse new sources of information. However, some research suggests that the structure of the
web promotes a winners-take-all pattern wherein a few sites on any topic receive the bulk of the attention. By building software to analyze the links between webpages on a topic, I am able to demonstrate the latter pattern on four political issues. When
analyzing the top sites on each issue, I find that traditional sources of information are outnumbered by web-only sources with formats that allow user participation.

▼ The World Wide Web is a global information medium
of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via computers connected
to the internet. Most of the users rely on traditional search
engines to search the information on the web. These search engines
deal with the Surface Web which is a set of Web pages directly
accessible through hyperlinks and ignores a large part of the Web
called Hidden Web which is hidden to present-day search engines. It
lies behind search forms and this part of the web containing an
almost endless amount of sources providing high quality information
stored in specialized databases, can be found in the depths of the
WWW. World Wide Web (WWW) is broadly divided into two categories:
and#61472;The surface web contains 1% of information content of the
web. Search engine crawl along the web to extract and index text
from HTML documents on the websites, then make this information
searchable through keywords. and#61472;The hidden web contains 99%
of information content of the web. Most of this information is
contained in the databases and is not indexed by search engines.
This means if we are searching for information from surface web
only, we search through only 1% of WWW and miss 99% of it whereas
95% of hidden web is free publicly accessible information. As the
Hidden web information that is hidden behind the search query forms
can only be accessed by interacting with these forms, development
of automated system that interacts with the search forms and
extracts the hidden web content would be of great value to human
users. Today, the web is crowded with home-pages and sites that
sell various types of products. Since the companies selling same
type of products are not at all interested to publish the products
of their competitors on their site, it would be nice if there is a
free web service which collaborate the marketing of the products of
the competitor web sites. Infact all the information is available
on the internet but buried behind search interfaces and stored
inside the databases.

▼ Algorithms are developed in computer science and related disciplines to provide concise step-by-step instructions for solving particular problems. For example, Dijkstra's algorithm was developed by computer scientist Edsger Dijkstra in 1956 to find a shortest path in a graph with a single source node. As science advances, problems in other disciplines are often transformed into algorithmic ones so that standard algorithms can be applied. For example, algorithms for stock portfolio optimization are used for diversifying
search results in information retrieval systems.
Though algorithm collections such as encyclopedias (e.g. Wikipedia) and algorithm textbooks manually catalog algorithms and make them available, such collections only contain standard algorithms (algorithms which are well defined and well known). Examples of standard algorithms include Dijkstra's algorithm, Binary
search, Fast Fourier transform, etc. Despite the well-established nature of these standard algorithms, they hardly satisfy the needs of algorithm users and researchers who seek cutting-edge solutions to their problems. Fortunately, researchers constantly develop new algorithms to solve new problems that have not been solved before, or new algorithms that improve upon the existing ones. A significant number of scholarly articles in computer science and related disciplines hence contain high-quality algorithms developed by researchers. However, manually searching for algorithms in a pile of papers would be tedious. Therefore, it would be useful to have a system that automatically collects and enables the
search for this ever increasing collection of algorithms.
Despite the development of various
search engine systems for entities in scholarly documents such as tables, figures, mathematical expressions, etc., systems that collect and index algorithms from scholarly documents never existed. The difficulty of automatically identifying algorithm representations and extracting their metadata make this problem challenging. While the needs for algorithm
search engines are apparent, literature on the possibility to build such systems is still in the infant stage.
This dissertation discusses AlgorithmSeer, a
search engine for algorithms. AlgorithmSeer collects algorithms from scholarly documents in the forms of pseudo-codes and algorithmic procedures. It then extracts and indexes the algorithm metadata, allowing algorithms to be searched. We raise the issue of metadata annotation, which can be solved by transferring the annotation from the well-annotated corpus via topical modeling. Finally, we discuss the potential use of algorithm citations in order to enhance the
search capacity beyond traditional text based
search.

▼ The purpose of this research is to investigate whether expert information can improve the ranking function of academic
search engines. We chose CiteSeerX as the testbed which is a well-known academic paper
search engine where the ranking function takes into consideration the number of citations and the similarity between the query and the paper. Therefore, papers with higher citations are easier to get higher positions in the ranking list. Thus, adding more features to the ranking function may reduce the bias of one or a few factors. Intuitively, if an author of a paper is an expert in the area, the paper should be more credible and also searchers should be more interested in. This research found that a document whose author is an expert has a higher probability to be clicked than a document which does not contain one. Furthermore, we included expert information as another feature of CiteSeerX’s ranking function. A supervised ranking approach that considers expert information was used. The evaluation shows that the two learned ranking functions perform better than CiteSeerX’s existing one.

▼ Since the search engine was first released in 1993, the development has never been slow down and various search engines emerged to vied for popularity. However, current traditional search engines like Google and Yahoo! are based on key words which lead to results impreciseness and information redundancy. A new search engine with semantic analysis can be the alternate solution in the future. It is more intelligent and informative, and provides better interaction with users.
This thesis discusses the detail on semantic search, explains advantages of semantic search over other key-word-based search and introduces how to integrate semantic analysis with common search engines. At the end of this thesis, there is an example of implementation of a simple semantic search engine.

▼ The number of users using the internet grows continuously, which is why it has become even more critical to make the information on the websites easy to access. Websites and their content should be easy to find, but also easy to use. Usually the process to finding information starts from search engines. Search engine optimization focuses on making the information and the websites easier to find, and different websites compete on the highest rankings on the search results page. After the wanted website is found, the user starts to navigate through the website. If the website is usable, the user will enjoy his/her experience on the page and probably end up finding the information they are looking for.
But what about the situations when the user does not experience the website in the same way? Accessibility standards aim to provide the content of the website for users with different kinds of disabilities. When a website is accessible, it means that the content is available for everyone, without considering the fact if someone needs the help of assistive technologies. However, sometimes when the information of the website is separated from the whole, it changes the experience. Emphasizing both the usability and accessibility aspects of the website compose a socially inclusive website, a website that provides equal opportunities for everyone, regardless of their disabilities.
An analysis comparing different university websites reveals that compounding the aspects of usability, or more specifically a good information architecture, and accessibility can have a positive impact on how the website performs in search engine rankings. There are also other consistencies between usability, accessibility and search engine optimization. In summary, it can be assumed that combining accessibility and usability into social inclusiveness can affect on how the website performs in search engines.

▼ Keyword
search is a prominent data retrieval method
for the Web, largely because the simple and efficient nature of
keyword processing allows a large amount of information to be
searched with fast response. However, keyword
search approaches do
not formally capture the clear meaning of a keyword query and fail
to address the semantic relationships between keywords. As a
result, the accuracy (precision and recall rate) is often
unsatisfactory, and the ranking algorithms fail to properly reflect
the semantic relevance of keywords. Our research particularly
focuses on increasing the accuracy of
search results for multi-word
search. We propose a statistical ontology-based semantic ranking
algorithm based on sentence units, and a new type of query
interface including wildcards. First, we allocate higher-ranking
scores to keywords located in the same sentence compared with
keywords located in separate sentences. While existing statistical
search algorithms such as N-gram only consider sequences of
adjacent keywords, our approach is able to calculate sequences of
non-adjacent keywords as well as adjacent keywords. Second, we
propose a slightly different type of query interface, which
considers a wildcard as an independent unit of a
search query to
reflect what users are actually seeking by way of the function of
query prediction based on not query data but actual Web data.
Unlike current information retrieval approaches such as proximity,
statistical language modeling, query prediction and query
answering, our statistical ontology-based model synthesizes
proximity concept and statistical approaches into a form of
ontology. This ontology helps to improve web information retrieval
accuracy. ❧ We validated our methodology with a suite of
experiments using the Text Retrieval Conference document
collection. We focused on two-word queries in our experiments - as
two-word queries are quite common. After applying our statistical
ontology-based algorithm to the Nutch
search engine, we compared
the results with results of the original Nutch
search and Google
Desktop
Search. The result demonstrates that our methodology has
improved accuracy quite significantly.

▼ This paper proposes a cumulant based classification means to identify waveforms for a blind receiver in the presence of time varying channels, which is built from the work done on cumulants in static channels currently in the literature. Results show the classification accuracy is on the order or better than current methods in use in static channels that do not vary over an observation period. This is accomplished by making use of second through tenth order cumulants in a signature vector that the
search engine platform has the means of differentiating. A receiver can then blindly identify waveforms accurately in the presence of multipath Rayleigh fading with AWGN noise.
Channel learning occurs prior to classification in order to identify the consistent distortion pattern for a waveform that is observable in the signature vector. Then using a database look-up method, the observed waveform is identified as belonging to a particular cluster based on the observed signature vector. If the distortion patterns are collected from a variety of channel types, the database can then classify both the waveform and the rough channel type that the waveform passed through. If the exact channel model or channel parameters is known and used as a limiter, significant improvement on the waveform classification can be achieved. Greater accuracy comes from using the exact channel model as the limiter.

The World Wide Web has quickly grown since the 90s, and it has led to an increase in the number of websites and the intensification of the competition. In parallel, search engines have played a major role by facilitating the research of information on the web, to the point of being an infinite source of traffic of which websites' owners would like to take advantage. In order to capture the maximum of qualified traffic, it has become necessary to stand out from the competitors to improve the visibility of a website on search engines. To do that, websites' owners can resort to firms which practice Search Engine Optimization (SEO). The latter gathers all the optimization techniques which make it possible to improve the ranking of web pages at the highest rank in the search results. The activity of search engine…

▼ Despite sophisticated
search engine algorithms
designed to eliminate irrelevant content, many Internet content
providers with valuable information are unable to achieve
visibility in the
search engine results due to many factors
including lack of information, misinformation, and
search engine
trade secrets. Furthermore, a survey of information on the topic
yields questionable advice unsubstantiated by research and
statistical analysis. Consequently, this thesis addresses some of
the problems facing content providers by providing relevant
statistics, as well as a simple research framework allowing content
providers to easily extend this research and more fully understand
the
search engine ranking algorithms. Due to the large scope of the
search engine ranking topic, this thesis focuses solely on
examining the relationship between on-page attributes and
search
result ranking. Nevertheless, the research framework presented in
this thesis can be altered to extend this research beyond the
analysis of on-page attributes.

▼ Search engines have grown vastly and are now part of our everyday life by providing more straightforward navigation on the internet. Besides, search engines are an integrated part of many websites, including e-commerce platforms. In this thesis, the focus was to increase the relevance of the search results of an existing e-commerce platform and analyze how the conversion rate is affected. Furthermore, the conversion rate describes the percentage of visitors that bought something from the total number of visitors on a website, and it is a widely used measurement in e-commerce.
Previous research has focused mostly on studying different ranking algorithms, but not many are included in the existing search engine frameworks. For this thesis, the purpose was to investigate how the methods from previous research could be utilized in an e-commerce platform with real customers. Furthermore, the conducted tests were over six weeks and included tens of thousands of customers.
The data that was collected during the testing phases of the proposed methods shows how the changes affect the conversion rate of the e-commerce platform. In addition to the conversion rate, the click-through rate was analyzed since it seemed to capture the changes better. The results include both measurements and analysis of how the different parts possibly affected the measurements.
While the results did not indicate that the conversion rate of the e-commerce platform was increased by the proposed methods, the results showed that with a simple solution, the existing process could be replaced. In addition, the results showed the need and direction for future development, which could have a further effect on the conversion rate of an e-commerce platform.

▼ In current business affairs, most executive professions require one or several kinds of data consultation in their practice. Nowadays, the majority of data either is or has been digitalized and digital data is defined as information represented in a discrete and discontinuous manner. For accessibility purposes, data are often stored in databases that organize information via design and modeling techniques to facilitate querying. Data retrieval is crucial and if this process lacks efficacy, users either are presented incomplete information or are forced to perform repetitive queries. Intellectual property (IP) lawyers in Brazil are among that group and must regularly access a private database for trademark information. While it contains all the data they require, the database’s querying mechanisms are not tailored for IP law practice. The existing filters and lack of replacement algorithms often yield incomplete results, increasing time and resources dispended. With millions of dollars in potential lawsuits and work-hours, the purpose of this study is to investigate whether an IP-focused querying system could help mitigate this resource waste, facilitating the trademark comparison work of IP lawyers. For this, a new orthographic and phonetically focused querying logic was implemented. ANOVA tests and a questionnaire were used to compare the existing querying mechanism with the new one in terms of time, work satisfaction and querying accuracy. Results indicate the new querying system significantly decreased the amount of searches needed to execute a complete trademark analysis, while lawyers averaged the same amount of time to complete their work. Lawyers also reported higher work satisfaction levels and perceived increase in work efficiency.

▼ ABSTRACT Context: With growing number of online businesses, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has become vital to capitalize a business because SEO is key factor for marketing an online business. SEO is the process to optimize a website so that it ranks well on Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs). Dynamic websites are commonly used for e-commerce because they are easier to update and expand; however they are subjected to indexing related problems. Objectives: This research aims to examine and address dynamic websites indexing related issues. To achieve aims and objectives of this research I intend to explore dynamic websites indexing considerations, investigate SEO tools to carry SEO campaign in three major search engines (Google, Yahoo and Bing), experiment SEO techniques, and determine to what extent dynamic websites can be made search engine friendly on these major search engines. Methods: In this research, detailed literature survey is performed to evaluate existing knowledge for SEO for dynamic websites. Further empirical experiments are conducted to address dynamic websites indexing problems; and to evaluate SEO techniques used in empirical experiments. Results: It is found that all major search engines, including Google, cannot fully index dynamic websites. I used some SEO techniques which I explored during this study to help dynamic webpage(s) get indexed in major search engines. The experiment results reflect the effectiveness of SEO techniques including URL encoding /friendly URLs on major search engines. Conclusions: I conclude that, dynamic websites are subjected to indexing related problems and require additional SEO efforts to appear in SERPs. Not all SEO techniques are equally effective on all search engines to improve indexing of dynamic webpage(s). Each implemented SEO technique has different impression on major search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ask, and AOL). As, the encoded URLs technique is effective on all major search engines. However, Yahoo and Bing prefer friendly URLs over typical URLs with parameters. Therefore, presentation of dynamic URL could be quite paying if it is needed to index dynamic website on search engines other than Google.

▼ During the last decade, Internet
search engines have become a popular and increasingly effective technology both in daily information seeking and in the business world. Nowadays, however, there exists very limited research work in this area. Existing studies have primarily relied upon methods and theories originated from prior research in traditional Information Retrieval Systems.
This dissertation is the first in-depth study of Internet
search engines with an expanded view of an Information Retrieval System and its applications. On the one hand, it proposes a new framework of relevance assessment. On the other hand, it addresses the online advertising aspect of Internet
search engines. Neither expansion has been adequately addressed in existing research in the domain of Internet
search engines.
The dissertation is composed of three independent studies compiled into chapter 2 through chapter 4, respectively. As the content on Internet continues to grow and new indexing technologies become available, Internet
search engines are facing an increasing challenge of ranking
search results. The impact of the diversity of
search results on the performance of
search engines has not been systematically examined. The first study aims to address this research issue by proposing a new framework of relevance assessment base on Information Attributes. With an analytical model, the impacts of both diversity and information seeking method have been identified.
The second study empirically tests the findings of the first study. In addition, the study uses
search engine quality as the dependent variable. With controlled experiments and a factorial design, the study confirms some of the findings of the first study. Inconsistent findings and implication have been discussed.
The third study aims to answer the research question of "What is the impact of
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) on the online advertising market". This study builds an economic model that reveals the impact of SEO on the market price of paid placement and the sustainability condition of SEO firms.
Together, the three studies explore and build theories in several untapped areas of Information Retrieval and the online advertising market. The practical and theoretical implications have been discussed in the concluding chapter.

▼ In this thesis, we aim at improving the
search result quality by utilizing the
search intelligence (history of searches) available in the form of click-through data. We address two key issues, namely 1) relevance feedback extraction and fusion, and 2) deciphering
search query intentions.
Relevance Feedback Extraction and Fusion: The existing
search engines depend heavily on the web linkage structure in the form of hyperlinks to determine the relevance and importance of the documents. But these are collective judgments given by the page authors and hence, prone to collaborated spamming. To overcome the spamming attempts and language semantic issues, it is also important to incorporate the user feedback on the documents' relevance. Since users can be hardly motivated to give explicit/direct feedback on
search quality, it becomes necessary to consider implicit feedback that can be collected from
search engine logs. Though a number of implicit feedback measures have been proposed in the literature, we have not been able to identify studies that aggregate those feedbacks in a meaningful way to get a final ranking of documents.
In this thesis, we first evaluate two implicit feedback measures namely 1) click sequence and 2) time spent on the document for their content uniqueness. We develop a mathematical programming model to collate the feedbacks collected from different sessions into a single ranking of documents. We use Kendall's τ rank correlation to determine the uniqueness of the information content present in the individual feedbacks. The experimental evaluation on top 30 select queries from an actual
search log data confirms that these two measures are not in perfect agreement and hence, incremental information can potentially be derived from them. Next, we study the feedback fusion problem in which the user feedbacks from various sessions need to be combined meaningfully.
Preference aggregation is a classical problem in economics and we study a variation of it where the rankers, i.e., the feedbacks, possess different expertise. We extend the generalized Mallows' model to model the feedback rankings given in user sessions. We propose a single stage and two stage aggregation framework to combine different feedbacks into one final ranking by taking their respective expertise into consideration. We show that the complexity of the parameter estimation problem is exponential in number of documents and queries. We develop two scalable heuristics namely, 1) a greedy algorithm, and 2) a weight based heuristic, that can closely approximate the solution. We also establish the goodness of fit of the model by testing it on actual log data through log-likelihood ratio test. As the independent evaluation of documents is not available, we conduct experiments on synthetic datasets devised appropriately to examine the various merits of the heuristics. The experimental results confirm the possibility of expertise oriented aggregation of feedbacks by producing orderings better than both the best ranker as well as equi-weight…

▼ Although public libraries are dedicated to connecting
people to information, the information resources offered by many
Canadian libraries are currently inaccessible to
search engine
indexing robots, and thus effectively invisible to online
searchers. This mixed-method study investigates factors that may be
impacting the visibility of Canadian public library resources on
search engines through semi-structured interviews with library
staff in ten libraries across Canada. Quantitative data about each
library’s website is used to provide a more complete picture of the
current visibility of participating libraries. The study identifies
attitudes, organizational factors, and technological factors that
may be motivating, inhibiting, and enabling
search engine
visibility, and provides recommendations on how to address these
factors. By delving into the underlying factors which may be
affecting libraries’ progress on the issue, this study aims to help
inform libraries’ decision-making processes and practices, as well
as clarifying avenues for further research.

▼ Searching for images can be challenging. How users search for images is governed by their information need. Nevertheless, in fulfilling their information need, users are often affected by subjective factors. These factors include topic familiarity, task difficulty, relevance criteria and satisfaction. This thesis focuses on three research questions exploring how image information needs together with these factors affect online web users' searching behaviour. The questions are: 1. How does image information need affect the criteria users apply when selecting relevant images? 2. How do different factors in image retrieval affect users' image searching behaviour? 3. Can we identify image information needs solely from user queries? In addressing these challenges, we conducted both user studies and proxy log analysis to complement each other. User studies are conducted in a laboratory setting and the needs are artificial, while proxy log captures users' actual needs and behaviour in the wild. The main user study involved 48 students of various disciplines from RMIT University. In the study, we represent image information needs as types of tasks. Data were collected from questionnaires and screen capture recordings. The questionnaire was used to collect data on criteria users find important when judging image relevance and perception on the effects of subjective factors to their searching. Screen capture recordings of their search activities were observed and time stamped to identify and measure search and retrieval behaviour. These measures were used to evaluate the effects of subjective factors on users' image search behaviour. The results showed in judging image relevance, users may apply similar criteria, however, the importance of these criteria depend on the types of image. Similarly, ratings of users' perception on aspects of performing image search show they were task dependent and that effect of different aspects were related. Users were more affected by familiarity and satisfaction when performing difficult image search tasks. Results of correlation suggest that users' perception of aspects of performing image search did not always correspond with their actual search behaviour. However, for some subjective aspects of user search behaviour, we have identified particular objective measures that correlate well with that aspect. The examination of users' queries in proxy logs, shows that users search for unambiguous images more frequently compared to conceptual images. Their sessions are short with two to three terms per query. When analysing queries from logs, we are actually making a guess of what users were searching for. However, by examining the way users modify/reformulate their queries may give an indication of their information need. Results show, that users frequently submit new queries or replace terms from their previous query rather than revising the query into more depth or breadth. Similar findings were found when compared with the user study data, whereby users in…
