▼ This research aims to qualitatively/quantitively assess the effect of temperature variation on the energy pile shaft resistance. The important mechanisms by which heating can change the shear strength of clay and clay-concrete interface are evaluated using experimental and numerical methods. As for experimental method, temperature-controlled triaxial tests, constant normal load (CNL) direct shear tests and small-scale pile tests were conducted. As for numerical approach, a fully coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) analysis was performed to simulate the experimental test results so that the capability of such analysis to predict thermo-mechanical behavior of energy piles is evaluated. Reconstituted (HC-77) kaolin clay, one-dimensionally consolidated from slurry, was used in all the studies. Cyclic and monotonic heat ranging between 24° C and 34°C were applied to the clay specimen and interface. The interface was sheared under two stiffness boundary conditions; Constant Normal Load (CNL) and Constant Normal Stiffness (CNS), where the applied normal stresses varied between 100 kPa and 300 kPa. The results of experimental tests indicate that heating improves the shear strength of normally consolidated (NC) clay and NC clay-concrete interface. However, a decrease in strength of over-consolidated (OC) clays was observed, which is thought to be linked to the heat-induced change in the contact stress between clay particles. It was also found out that the increase in the strength of interface under CNL condition, which was about 10%, is exclusively attributed to heat strengthening of clay at the interface. However, the increase in shaft resistance under CNS condition (96% and 49% due to non-cyclic heating and cyclic heating-cooling, respectively) is primarily attributed to the heat-induced increase of effective lateral stress (81% and 35% due to non-cyclic heating and cyclic heating-cooling, respectively). The heat-induced increase in the shear strength of clay (8-10%) also partially contribute to the overall increase of the shaft resistance under CNS condition. It was also observed that there is very good agreement between the results experimentally measured and those numerically predicted. Therefore, fully coupled THM analysis can effectively be used to predict the thermo-mechanical behavior of real energy piles in clays. Advisors/Committee Members: Sam Helwany.

▼ The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of density, water content, drying temperature, layer thickness, and plasticity index on the nature of shrinkage cracks that result from drying of wet clay. Clay soils are widely used in construction of embankment dams, levees, highway embankments, sanitary landfills, hydraulic barriers, and foundations. For most of these projects, the clay is compacted at maximum dry density (MDD) and optimum water content (OWC). The climatic conditions can change repeatedly during the service life of structures made primarily of clay, resulting in corresponding changes in water content. This is particularly the case in Africa, Central America, and South Asia where prolonged periods of sunshine and intense heat follow monsoon season, characterized by intense, and occasionally prolonged, periods of precipitation. A decrease in water content upon drying causes a decrease in volume of clay, resulting in development of shrinkage cracks. Five samples each of low plasticity clay (CL), medium plasticity clay (CM), and high plasticity clay (CH), as indicated by the plasticity index values for each clay, were compacted at water contents on both sides of the OWC to establish the compaction curves. The MDD values for CL, CM, and CH samples were found to be at 101.9 lb/ft3 (1.63 Mg/m3), 97.6 lb/ft3 (1.56 Mg/m3), and 94.2 lb/ft3 (1.51 Mg/m3), respectively, whereas the corresponding OWC values were 20.7%, 25.2%, and 40.2%, respectively. The compacted samples were oven-dried at temperatures of 10 °C (50oF), 20 °C (68oF), 30 °C (86oF), 40 °C (104oF), and 50 °C (122oF). Upon attaining a constant dry weight, the nature of any cracks developed in the samples (i.e. crack length, crack aperture, crack area, etc.) was examined and photographs of the samples were taken.In addition to the compacted samples, uncompacted (loose) clay layers of varying thicknesses (5 mm, 7 mm, 10 mm, 20 mm, and 30 mm) of the three types of clay were saturated and oven dried at the aforementioned temperatures to investigate the effect of clay layer thickness on shrinkage crack parameters like crack length, crack aperture, and crack area. Compacted samples simulate the behaviour of clays as used in their engineering applications, whereas uncompacted samples simulate their behavior in undisturbed natural state.The length, aperture, and area of the developed cracks for each clay type were correlated with dry density, initial water content, drying temperature, clay layer thickness, and plasticity index. Compacted samples of only CH showed clear signs of shrinkage crack development whereas compacted samples of CL and CM did not develop shrinkage cracks. Therefore, the CL and CM samples could not be analysed for crack length, aperture, and area. Compacted CH samples exhibited an increase in crack length, crack aperture and crack area with an increase in dry density and water content. ▼ As population continues to rise and development continues, there is increasing pressure for the production of food on a decreasing amount of land as well as an increased need for combustible fuel. Biofuels produced from agricultural products may be able to alleviate some of the demands on foreign oil, and the byproduct, biochar, is reported to have positive effects on soil properties and crop growth when applied to soils. To test this, biochar produced from sorghum (sorghum bicolor) was field tested on sandy loam soil at rates of 0, 4, 8, 12, and 16 Mg ha^-1. Biochar was applied to soil using two different methods, surface applied and incorporated down to 15 cm, and bermudagrass (cynodon dactylon) was grown from seed. Runoff, sediment loss, biomass yield, saturated hydraulic conductivity, water holding capacity, bulk density, porosity, and soil nutrients were tested in a randomized block design. Biochar did not have a significant effect on physical parameters, biomass, or runoff and sediment loss (α=0.05). Biochar application to soils produced a significant linear increase on certain soil chemical parameters six months after application (pH and K). Soil test K continued to show a linear increase 22 months after biochar application; however the linear trend was reversed for pH with incorporated biochar. Additionally, a greenhouse study was conducted using the same biochar source with identical application rates and application methods. Three soils were tested, an acidic fine sandy loam (Rader fine sandy loam), an acidic clay (Burleson clay), and an alkaline clay (Ships). Soil temperature, water loss, emergence rates, biomass yields, nutrient mass export, and bulk density were tested. Surface applied biochar enchanced bermudagrass emergence, increasing the germination index (α=0.05) for Burleson clay and Ships clay soils. Biochar application increased biomass yields for 8 and 12 Mg ha^-1 rates for Burleson soils compared to other application rates. Moreover, rates above 12 Mg ha^-1 decreased biomass yield, indicating a quadratic response to biochar application. There was not a significant difference in nutrient uptake in bermudagrass tissue, nor was there a significant change in soil bulk density in response to biochar application. ▼ Total suction of unsaturated soils is contributed by matric and osmotic suctions. Matric suction arises from capillary actions in the soil structure and varies with changes in moisture content of the soil. Pore fluid osmotic suction is related to the dissolved salt content in soil water (soil water salinity) and increases with pore water salinity. Exposure of clay soils to chemical solutions (example landfill leachate, brine pond solutions) induces osmotic suction difference between soil water and the chemical reservoir. Soil water refers to the aqueous solution residing in soil pores that is chemically composed of H2O molecules and dissolved salt molecules. Osmotic suction difference between soil water and the chemical reservoir is dissipated through the following modes. Salt molecules diffuse from the chemical reservoir to the soil water and H2O molecules from soil water flows to chemical reservoir to equalize salt concentrations in the two chambers. This flow of H2O molecules is called an osmotic flow. During osmotic flow, if the clay particles behave as perfect semi-permeable membranes, only water exchanges between clay voids and the external solution in response to chemical concentration gradients. Clay particles however function as imperfect semi-permeable membranes and transfer dissolved salts in addition to water. The outward flow of H2O molecules from soil water (dilute solution chamber) to chemical reservoir (concentrated solution chamber) causes negative pore fluid pressures to develop within the compacted clay, which then leads to increase in effective stress and the consequent volume decrease is termed as osmotic induced consolidation. Conversely, diffusion of salt molecules from chemical reservoir to soil water in response to chemical concentration gradient reduces the thickness of the diffuse ion layers around the clay particles causing a decrease in the electrical repulsion forces between them. This in turn reduces the separation of the clay particles and, consequently, compresses the clay sample to a lower void ratio; the process being termed as osmotic consolidation. Tests described by researchers show that osmotic consolidation usually has a larger effect than the osmotically induced one. Review of the literature shows that most of the available theoretical and experimental analysis in literature only focuses on the behaviour of clay samples reconstituted from slurries and not on the one of compacted clays. Compacted clays are exposed to osmotic suction gradients under field situations such as landfills and brine ponds where compacted clay liners are in contact with leachate/brine solutions. Examining the impact of osmotic suction dissipation on the swell/compression behaviour of compacted clays forms the focus of the present thesis. ▼ Most of the conventional elastic plastic models of soils are based on continuum mechanics, however, for stiff, hard soils and soft rocks discontinuities develop under load, and since the models assume continuity, they would cease to apply. These discontinuities had not been accounted for in the continuum-based elastic plastic models. On the other hand, fracture mechanical theory may be used to advantage to replicate their behaviour. The behaviour of soil commonly is interpreted from conventional triaxial apparatus, whereas, testing of soil using the plane strain device would be more useful information, as more geotechnical field problems are basically occur in these situations.The present study has dealt with the investigation on the behaviour of saturated over consolidated clay as well as partially saturated clay, which represent the stiff and hard brittle clay by the use of a new biaxial device modified from conventional triaxial apparatus. In general, the apparatus was able to produce data which are in a good accordance with known soil behaviour of stiff clay. Shear band localization occurred in all test specimens of over consolidated clay. Specimen initiated to be discontinuous upon reaching the peak stresses. It is evident that specimen of partially saturated containing fissures had weaker shear strength as well as compressive strength.From point of view of the discontinuities that take places in the stiff clay, a model based on the unified model (Lo et al, 1996) and the elasto-plastic shear fracture model (Lo, et al, 2005) was used in this study. The problem may be dealth with one of brittle fracture of a three-phase specimen, where the matric suction is disrupted by tensile or shear loading. As a result the fracture toughness of the specimen would vary according to matric suction changes. A problem of plane strain compression testing was carried out to implement the model. The crack propagation simulation was resulted the same pattern with the experimental results on partially saturated kaolin clay.

▼ Detailed quantitative mineralogical analysis and physical studies were made of twenty nine Cainozoic clays from different parts of Tasmania. The clays are mainly of Tertiary age and are both residual and sedimentary in origin. The geological occurrences of the clays are described and their mineralogy discussed. The two main methods of analysis consisted of X-ray diffraction techniques and differential thermal analysis; iron determinations were made on four selected samples. The differential thermal method of analysis in conjunction with X-ray diffraction examination proved advantageous in detecting an abnormal montmorillonite which was characterised by a lower dehydroxylation peak at about 550°C. The clays can be divided into five types, on the basis of their mIst abundant clay mineral, as follows: 1.Clays rich in kaolinite 2.Clays having abnormal montmorillonite as the dominant clay mineral. 3.Clays characterised by mixed layer minerals of illite and montmorillonite, as both randomly stacked and ordered structures. 4.Clays characterised jointly by kaolinite and abnormal montmorillonite. 5. Clays predominantly kaolinites with gibbsite. Quartz was abundant in all the clays. Other minor constituents included; illite, feldspar, goethite, gibbsite, matahalloysite, calcite, chlorite, haematite, muscovite, mixed layer minerals and organic matter: The clay minerals were used as indicators to interpret tentatively the environment of deposition during the Cainozoic Era. The possibility exists that different clay minerals might have formed in the weathered zones at different periods in the geological history of the area as a result of changes of micro- chemical climate. In the 36' bored at Sandy Bay the mineral composition revealed no diagenetic change with the accumulation of the clays. Most of the clays required a high proportion of tempering water. Drying and firing characteristics were related to clay mineralogy. Of the two chief mineralogical groups, clays which consist primarily of kaolinite are of medium plasticity and shrinkage, light coloured on firing and moderttely refractory. Another group of clays with abnormal montmorillonite, or mixed ATMinerale have high plasticity and sh±inkage, are very slow in drying, orange - red burning and low - refractory.

▼ Novelist Ayi Kwei Armah and poet Nicolás Guillén are, respectively, Ghanaian and Cuban writers who embody the efforts of mid-twentieth-century artists to depict the day-to-day socio-political conditions and struggles of societies seeking to move beyond histories of racial and economic oppression. Both engage powerfully and controversially with ongoing debates around damaging colonial histories and disappointing contemporary realities. The achievement of independence did not usher in the new, improved nations sought by way of struggle and suffering in either country. Uncompromisingly, Armah’s and Guillén’s works portray both the irredeemable parts of colonial histories and those that can be put to the benefit of the present, together with the tension that this disparity between expectation and achievement engenders. Granted the varied nature of the subject matter of the works of the two authors and the seeming lack of relation between them, this study makes use of a selection of theoretical frameworks to find common ground for analysing their work. The analysis of Nicolás Guillén’s poetry is based on concepts fundamental to Latin American social and cultural criticism, notably, the ideology of whitening or blanqueamiento, cultural mixing or mestizaje, and feminist criticism. The study of Ayi Kwei Armah’s first novel The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born (1968) employs socio-cultural theories including traditional Ghanaian concepts such sankofa and the Akan symbol of adinkra, together with Jean Paul Sartre’s concept of the “engaged writer.” This thesis argues that, in spite of their different national and ethnic backgrounds, both writers draw on traditional aspects of African culture to provide the impetus for social and cultural regeneration in their societies. Critics have read Armah as presenting disillusioned and decadent images of Ghana and promoting limited roles for women in his work. Guillén too has been portrayed by critics as offering an objectified representation of women in his poetry of the 1920s and 1930s and has been accused of ignoring, as a poet of meztizaje or ethnic mixture, the issues of Blacks and Blackness. This thesis contests these limiting critical positions, arguing that the writers’ representations of women, Blacks and Blackness are more positive and progressive than has been allowed. Acknowledging the burden of racist histories, the false promise of postcolonial liberation, the blatant corruption and the unrealised expectations of their times, they nevertheless allow for the possibility of regeneration in the societies they both dissect and, in part, restore. ▼ This dissertation investigates the topic of scholarship in the Information Systems (IS) discipline through a series of three papers. The papers, presented in Chapters 2, 3, and 4, each delve into a specific chronological period of IS scholarship which are delineated into the past, present, and future. Chapter 2 elucidates the IS discipline’s ‘past’ by categorizing the entire corpus of extant research in the Association of Information Systems Senior Scholars’ Basket of eight journals. Clusters derived from these mainstream journal publications represent a thematic identity of the IS discipline. After analyzing the corpus altogether, further analysis segments the corpus into shorter, 5-year periods to illuminate the historical evolution of the themes. Lastly, interpretations of the trends and a recommendation to curate an IS Body of Knowledge are discussed. Chapter 3 surveys business school deans and IS academics eliciting their ‘present’ social representations of the IS discipline. It then seeks the two groups’ feedback regarding their level of agreement with concerns attributed to the IS discipline as summarized in Ives and Adams (2012). Group responses are evaluated independently and are juxtaposed for between-group analysis. Then, additional concerns are gathered to ensure the full range of issues are represented. Network topic maps illustrate the findings, and interpretations are discussed. Group differences suggest that IS academics are more critical of the IS discipline than business school deans. In Chapter 4, an alternative research approach is offered for conducting ‘future’ scholarship efforts in the IS discipline. A framework that organizes discourse on the emergent crowdsourced research genre is constructed. Prior to building the framework, a crowdsourcing process model is developed to conceptualize how problems and outcomes interact with the crowdsourcing process. The internal process components include task, governance, people, and technology. Then, the crowdsourcing process model is applied to eight general research process phases beginning with the idea generation phase and concluding with the apply results phase. Implementation of the crowdsourced research framework expounds phase-specific implications as well as other ubiquitous implications of the research process. The findings are discussed, and future directions for the IS crowd are suggested.

▼ When members of white society rejected Civil War Amendments that called for a radical revision of social norms and legal provisions, widespread refusal to accept blacks as fellow citizens culminated in the increased lynching of African Americans. The increased activity of lynching during Reconstruction has drawn the attention of scholars across disciplines, all of whom have touched upon the functions, causes, and significances of American lynchings. However, while many of them have implied a connection between lynching and national citizenship, there has yet to be a sustained systematic examination of this argument. In “Rhetoric and Civic Belonging: Lynching and the Making of National Community,” I attend to this gap in the critical literature by examining lynching as rhetorical activity that both has challenged and continues to challenge the civic status of African Americans. Using Kenneth Burke’s notion of rhetorical identification and Kevin Dean’s concept of rhetorical juxtaposition I examine the rhetoric of historical and legislative documents, social practices, and American public discourse before, during, and after Reconstruction and explain how they work together to rhetorically construct American citizenship as a racialized political identity. “Rhetoric and Civic Belonging: Lynching and the Making of National Community” contributes to projects in the field of Rhetoric that examine diverse modes of civic engagement, how these modes contribute to the construction of national identity, and the role visual and print media play in the maintenance of this identity. At the heart of this study is a consideration of violence’s centrality to the making of the nation; specifically, how official and unofficial campaigns of violence have and continue to contribute to the formation of an American national community. My analysis yields three general findings. First, that lynching was the violent refutation of African Americans’ inclusion into the category of “citizen.” Second, that the federal government’s refusal to implement anti-lynching legislation lent an air of legitimacy to lynching while simultaneously creating a relationship between its practice and white supremacists notions of American civic identity. Among enclaves of white society lynching became a symbolic act that reaffirmed the racial and civic supremacy of white Americans, a rhetorical performance that symbolically reconstituted white supremacist worldview and confirmed followers’ convictions that white Americans, not African Americans, were the sole and rightful heirs to democratic promise and protection. In this sense, lynchers and white supremacist sympathizers read lynching as patriotic duty, as civic action. My third and final finding complicates claims of America’s present-day post-racial status.
