An examination of toddlers' expressions of empathy for pain versus sadness.

Empathy for others’ pain is an important human capacity. Despite this, little is known about how children develop or express their empathy for another individual’s pain. Thus, this dissertation aimed to accomplish two primary objectives: 1) to describe and compare children’s expressions of empathy toward others’ pain and others’ sadness, and 2) to examine whether developmental (i.e., age and sex) or interindividual variables of interest (i.e., temperament, social-emotional variables, language abilities) predict children’s expressions of empathy for pain and empathy for sadness. To this end, 120 children (60 boys, 60 girls) between the ages of 18 and 36 months (M = 26.44 months; SD = 5.17 months) were assessed for their empathy-related behavioural responses to lab-based simulations of pain and sadness. Children’s responses were coded for: prosocial behaviours (e.g., sharing), attempts to understand the distress (e.g., hypothesis testing), self-distress behaviours (e.g., self-soothing), unresponsive/inappropriate responses (e.g., ignoring, showing anger), and miscellaneous responses (e.g., imitation). Children were also given an overall rating of global concern. Differences emerged when individual behavioural codes were compared between pain and sadness simulations. Specifically, children were more likely to be distressed by, but also more likely to be prosocially responsive to, another’s sadness. Interestingly, children were more likely to actively play during another’s pain. Two principal component analyses were conducted: one for the pain simulations and one for the sadness simulations. Three components emerged both for pain (Empathic Concern for Others’ Pain, Personal Distress to Others’ Pain, and Unresponsiveness to Others’ Pain) and for sadness (Empathic Concern for Others’ Sadness, Personal Distress to Others’ Sadness, and Social Referencing in Response to Others’ Sadness). While there was some overlap in the conceptualization of the first two components for both pain and sadness, the behaviours that loaded onto these components were different. Additionally, the third component for each analysis described very different phenomena. For pain, this final component described general unresponsiveness to the other’s distress. For sadness, the final component described a tendency to gauge one’s response on the reaction of a parent. Hierarchical regression analyses examining the influence of developmental (i.e., age and sex) and interindividual variables of interest (i.e., temperament, social-emotional variables, and language abilities) in children’s empathy-related responses were also conducted for each pain and sadness component. In general, age or sex differences only emerged for empathy-related responses to pain. ▼ The capacity to regulate and integrate emotional experiences is essential to well-being and autonomous functioning (Ryan, Deci, & Vansteenkiste, 2016). Despite the increasing interest in the topic of emotion regulation, much remains to be known (Gross, 2015). In this research I applied the framework of self-determination theory (SDT, Ryan & Deci, 2000) to extend the existing literature in three novel ways: (1) obtaining additional evidence on a relatively less studied form of emotional regulation, integrative emotion regulation (i.e., an interested, open stance toward emotions); (2) investigating the role of integrative emotional regulation compared to expressive suppression in the context of sadness (rather than the more widely studied emotion of fear); (3) exploring an underlying mechanism (i.e., experiential avoidance) by which different emotion regulation strategies yield their outcomes. Following previous studies (Roth et al., 2014; Roth et al., 2016), sadness was elicited using a validated short film-clip. Those in the control condition were asked to watch the film; those in the integrative emotion regulation (IER) condition were instructed to watch the film taking an interest in their feelings; and those in the expressive suppression (ES) condition were asked to watch the film hiding their feelings. Emotional reactions and level of experiential avoidance during the task were assessed. Forty-eight hours later, participants underwent the same procedure, with the addition of a film-related recall task. Contrary to predictions and past findings, those in the IER condition compared to the other conditions did not experience greater reduction of sadness or better film-related recall at second exposure. Mediation analyses, however, revealed a significant indirect effect: those in the ES condition compared to other groups reported higher experiential avoidance, in turn, those higher in experiential avoidance reported higher film-clip sadness intensity at second exposure. This finding highlights a potential mechanism for the well-documented costs of expressive suppression. This indirect effect was not present with film-related recall as the outcome. Results are discussed with regards to potential differences in integration and suppression of sadness versus fear, as well as with regards to different results potentially stemming from a relatively high intensity of induced emotion in the present study. Implications for psychotherapy, and more broadly emotion regulation are discussed.

Depression is a condition characterized by sadness and other symptoms, which are implicated in a persistent style of thinking referred to as depressive rumination. The analytical rumination hypothesis argues that depression is an adaptive response to complicated, personal problems, and that rumination involves an analysis of these problems. This analytical rumination has two stages: first, depressive symptoms promote causal analysis (i.e., considering why the problems happened). Causal analysis then leads to problem-solving analysis (i.e., finding ways to deal with problems), which in turn reduces depression. The empirical studies in this dissertation collectively test whether the nature of depressive thinking is consistent with the analytical rumination hypothesis. In Chapter 2, I investigated the temporal order of sadness and the stages of analytical rumination by asking participants to write about their personal problems. This writing paradigm promoted sadness and causal analysis, but not problem-solving analysis, suggesting that depressive symptoms coincide with causal thinking. In Chapter 3, I explored whether emotions during writing were related to analytical thinking by modifying the paradigm to isolate the impact of other factors (i.e., personal experience with the problem and its valence). These factors could not fully account for emotional changes during writing, suggesting that analytical thinking played a role. Analytical rumination is one of several theories of depressive thinking, so in Chapter 4, I conducted a joint factor analysis of four rumination questionnaires and compared the prevalence of the emerging factors. Factors reflecting causal thoughts and problem-solving were most frequently endorsed, even when they were measured in the presence of sadness induced by the writing paradigm in Chapter 5. Furthermore, associations between these factors and depressive symptoms were consistent with the stages of analytical rumination. Overall, my findings suggest that depressive thinking focuses on understanding and solving problems, and it may have functional implications for depression.

Depression is a mental health condition in part characterized by sadness and changes in thinking. One evolutionary perspective argues that depression is a response to complicated, personal problems, and that symptoms of depression, like sadness, help individuals think through their problems. According to this perspective, depressive thinking is analytical, and it involves causal thinking to identify why the problems happened and problem-solving to find potential solutions. In my dissertation, I examine whether individuals engage in causal thinking and problem-solving when they are sad or depressed. My experiments assess whether writing about personal problems promotes sadness and causal thinking, and they examine the impact of analytical thinking on changes in sadness during writing. ▼ Parentsâ€™ emotion-related socialization behaviors are one component of the process through which children learn about the experience, expression and regulation of emotions and much research has examined these behaviors in relation to childrenâ€™s outcomes (Eisenberg, Cumberland, & Spinrad, 1998). Parentsâ€™ behaviors are informed in part by their underlying beliefs about childrenâ€™s emotions (Dunsmore & Halberstadt, 1997; Halberstadt, Thompson, Parker, & Dunsmore, 2008; Wong, McElwain, & Halberstadt, 2009). Much of the research on emotion socialization beliefs and behavior has combined negative emotions without examining whether there are unique socialization processes for distinct emotions. The goal of the current study was to explore the relationship between parentsâ€™ beliefs about two distinct emotions, anger and sadness, and parentsâ€™ socialization behaviors for these two emotions, as well as how parentsâ€™ beliefs and behaviors relate to childrenâ€™s affective social competence. In addition, the influence of parent gender, child gender, and ethnicity was assessed. A diverse sample of parents (African American, European American and Lumbee Native American) and their 8-12 year old children were recruited to explore the five major aims of the current study. The main findings supported the importance of distinguishing between parentsâ€™ beliefs and behaviors for childrenâ€™s anger and sadness. Parent gender and education group differences were also found in parentsâ€™ beliefs about anger and sadness. This is an important contribution to the literature and future research should examine whether certain parental beliefs and behaviors are more beneficial for childrenâ€™s outcomes than others. ▼ Empirical evidence suggests that complex cognitive processes such as decision-making can be influenced by incidental affect (i.e. emotional states unrelated to the decision), which may have importance implications for furthering our understanding and treatment of mood disorders. Following up on previous behavioral findings suggesting that sad mood leads to biases in social decision-making, the present research first investigated how such biases are implemented in the brain. Nineteen adult participants made decisions that involved accepting or rejecting monetary offers from others in an Ultimatum Game (a well known economic task), while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Prior to each set of decisions, participants watched a short video clip aimed at inducing either sadness or a neutral emotional state. Results indicated that sad participants rejected more "unfair" offers than those in the neutral condition, thereby replicating our previous findings. Neuroimaging analyses revealed that receiving unfair offers while in a sad mood elicited activity in brain areas related to aversive emotional states and somatosensory integration (anterior insula) and to cognitive conflict (anterior cingulate cortex). Sad participants also showed a diminished sensitivity in neural regions associated with reward processing (ventral striatum). Importantly, insular activation uniquely mediated the relationship between sadness and decision bias, demonstrating how subtle mood states can be integrated at the neural level to bias decision-making.In a second study, we assessed to what extent such affect infusion in decision-making may translate to clinical depression, a mood disorder involving chronic sad affect. Fifteen depressed and twenty-three nondepressed individuals made decisions to accept or reject monetary offers from other players in the Ultimatum Game. Like transiently sad, but healthy, individuals, depressed participants reported a more negative emotional reaction to unfair offers. However, unlike sad healthy individuals, they accepted significantly more of these offers than did controls. A positive relationship was observed in the depressed group, but not in controls, between acceptance rates of unfair offers and resting cardiac vagal tone, a physiological index of emotion regulation capacity. These findings suggest distinct biasing processes in depression, which may be related to higher reliance on regulating negative emotion. ▼ Theories contradict each other by predicting either facilitative or detrimental effects of sad mood on cognitive outcomes. For instance, affect-as-information models hold that sad mood encourages detailed and analytical processing styles, thereby improving cognitive abilities; and resource allocation models predict that sad mood harms cognitive abilities due to sad thoughts that tax limited resources such as attention and working memory. The present study explores these questions by exploring sad mood and one type of cognitive ability—response inhibition (RI). The few studies examining the link between RI and sad mood are mixed in outcome. Understanding whether and how sad mood affects RI will help determine the veracity of theories that predict different cognitive performance outcomes during sad mood, contribute to understanding psychological problems that involve deficits in RI, and inform our ability to measure cognitive constructs such as RI accurately. Further, the strength of a person’s ability to regulate their own emotions affects the degree to which emotional states affect their behavior. Thus if sad mood affects RI, emotion regulation may moderate the strength of this effect. This study examines how sad mood and emotion regulation affected RI in a sample of 273 undergraduate psychology students. About half of participants went through a neutral induction where they wrote about a typical day, and the others went through a sad mood induction where they wrote about a sad event they experienced. Emotion regulation was measured with a questionnaire, and an RI composite score of three computerized tasks (Stroop color-word, Stop Signal Task, and Go/No-go) was calculated using Principal Components Analysis. The first hypothesis predicted that sad mood would either increase or decrease RI. The second hypothesis predicted an interaction: that poor emotion regulation would increase this association in the direction of the main effect (or in either direction if there is no mood main effect). These a priori hypotheses were not supported, but results from post hoc analyses showed that though self-ratings of sad mood did not affect RI, writing about sad events (the experimental condition) seems to worsen RI—perhaps due to participants being distracted by sad thoughts. This result is consistent with cognitive load theories and literature suggesting that cognitive loads, rumination, and mind-wandering are detrimental to cognitive functioning. Further, it extends these findings from well-established areas such as working memory to the less-established area of response inhibition.

▼ Sadness, unlike other negative feelings, is unique in that its main causes are related to unpreventable and irreversible harm without any blamable objects. Due to these distinctive attributes, pre-existing theories of media use—uses and gratifications and Zillmann’s mood management—that center around hedonism-driven media choice are not sufficient to explain the media preferences of individuals with sad feelings. As those theories predict, sad individuals may not always opt to improve their negative feelings into positive ones or distract themselves from those feelings. In order to predict sadness-based media preferences that correspond to the three potential salient goals of sadness regulation—improving, distracting, or embracing—the present study conducted an experiment manipulating sad and neutral feelings and repeatedly measuring preference for three media genres—comedies, game shows, and sad dramas. Results showed that most participants wanted to watch comedies over sad dramas or game shows regardless of their prevailing mood states. However, a series of mediation analyses revealed that sadness indirectly affected preference for sad dramas because of an expectation of gaining profound life meanings and purposes. Additionally, sadness indirectly affected the tendency of some viewers to avoid comedies and/or game shows because they expected viewing such programming to induce unhappy or annoyed feelings respectively. These findings were interpreted as suggesting that although most sad individuals preferred to watch comedies, some viewers are motivated to experience self-understanding and maturity and to gain insights into life and the world, and sad dramas with their truthful, compelling, and meaningful messages provide viewers with constructive coping resources. To more fully understand the media consumption of sad people, the results are further discussed in terms of the importance of cognitive responses distinct from the emotional responses that resulted from the use of media. ▼ Socio-functional approach to shame suggests that displaying shame after norm violation communicates that a person is ready to conform to the group’s standards, which in turn prevents social isolation and punishments. Previous research gives support for this theory, showing that a perpetrator’s verbal expressions of shame increase forgiveness and reduce observers’ punitive intentions. However, only one experimental study has investigated the hypothesized effects of nonverbal shame displays, manipulating solely the transgressor’s head orientation. This is a serious shortcoming given the functional approach assumption that human shame is evolutionarily rooted in submissive behavior established in shrunken body posture. In addition, so far no comparison has been made between shame and other closely related emotions, making it premature to conclude that shame would have an unique social function not possessed by other emotions. Two experimental studies were conducted to investigate the communicative and social effects of shame displays. In Study 1, participants read vignettes of mild norm violations, after which they were asked to select a picture of emotional expression most suitable to convey the transgressor’s understanding of her/his transgression. Bodily displays of shame were selected as the most suitable for this communicative task, but expressions of sadness were also found appropriate. In Study 2, the social functions of shame and sadness were compared to further investigate the social consequences and mediating socio-cognitive mechanisms underlying the consolidating influence of shame displays. Again, a vignette approach was used, but now the expressions were systematically manipulated while measuring the perceiver’s moral judgements, empathy, and cooperative and punitive intentions. Both shame and sadness expressions increased observers’ empathy and willingness to cooperate with the transgressor compared to a neutral expression condition. However, contrary to the uniqueness assumption, the effects of shame on empathy and cooperative intentions were identical to those of sadness. Also, none of the expressions reduced the perceiver’s punitive intentions. The presented results partially support the functional account, showing that bodily shame induces empathy and prevent from social isolation. The similarity of shame and sadness suggests, however, that general empathy driven mechanism may underlie the obtained consolidating influence of submissive bodily displays.

Constantemente os indivíduos tomam decisões, sem que, na maioria das vezes tenham intencionalidade no processo de decisão. Para além disso, as tomadas de decisão, muitas vezes sofrem diversos tipos influência, como por exemplo, influência emocional. A literatura sugere que uma simples indução emocional altera o processo de decisão relativo à tarefa. Nas últimas décadas dois saberes distintos têm vindo a confluir e a propor modelos explicativos que correlacionam processos de tomada de decisão económica e influência emocional. A economia contribui com modelos explicativos acerca do processo de tomada de decisão económica sob risco e a psicologia avança com modelos teóricos acerca da influência emocional neste processo. As emoções estudadas no presente estudo foram o nojo e a tristeza. Considera-se o nojo uma das emoções mais influentes nas culturas de consumo, (Health, Bell, & Stenberg, 2001) uma vez que pode provocar tendências de ação que podem influenciar as escolhas económicas (Phelps, 2009). A tristeza, partilhando a mesma valência do nojo, pode associar-se, em muitos casos à presença de psicopatologia. Todos os sujeitos responderam a um inquérito sobre tarefas de decisão económica em cenários que envolviam ganhos ou perdas. De um modo geral, e contrariamente às hipóteses levantadas e ao que é defendido pela literatura, não foram registadas diferenças significativas entre a indução emocional e o processo de tomada de decisão económica. Contudo, foram encontradas diferenças significativas relacionadas com a idade e o género, e também em alguns domínios psicopatológicos, sugerindo novas linhas de investigação.

Constantly individuals make decisions without, in most of the times, having intentionality in the process of decision. Additionally, the decision making often suffer from different types of influence, such as emotional influence. Specialized literature suggests that during a task, a simple emotional induction can change the making-decision process. In the last decades two different types of knowledge have been converging and proposing explanatory models that correlate the economic decision-making under emotional influence. The economy contributes with explanation models of the economic decision-making under risk and psychology advances with theoretic models about the emotional influence in the process. The emotions studied in this study were Disgust and Sadness. Disgust is considered one of the most influential emotions in the consumer cultures since actions can be of some influence in the economic choices. O presente estudo pretende analisar o reconhecimento de emoções em expressões emocionais na face e voz junto de médicos de Medicina Geral e Familiar em função da exaustão emocional. A amostra foi composta por 72 médicos de Medicina Geral e a recolha de dados foi realizada em dois momentos. Numa primeira fase aplicou-se o questionário de caracterização sociodemográfica e profissional, a versão portuguesa do Maslach Burnout Inventory (M.B.I.) para medir a exaustão emocional e o Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) para avaliar o cronótipo. Após uma semana, os participantes realizaram duas tarefas nas quais foram avaliados os acertos e a rapidez na identificação das emoções de dor, tristeza, alegria e neutra na expressão facial e voz. Na Tarefa 1 foi pedido aos participantes para identificarem as emoções-alvo em faces dinâmicas e na Tarefa 2 foi pedida a identificação da emoção que é expressa na voz através da sua congruência com as faces visualizadas. As expressões faciais foram retiradas do STOIC Dymanic Facial Emotional Expressions Database e os estímulos vocais do Montreal Affective Voices. Como esperado, os participantes identificaram mais rapidamente e de forma correta a emoção alegria, com acertos superiores a 90%, seguida por uma percentagem elevada de identificação da dor em ambas as tarefas. No entanto, na tarefa de identificação da voz nas expressões faciais, houve um número reduzido de acertos na tristeza e um enviesamento para a seleção da dor quando as emoções não eram corretamente identificadas. Estes resultados na tarefa de identificação da emoção na voz diferiram em função do nível de exaustão emocional. Verificámos que os participantes com maior exaustão emocional foram mais rápidos a realizar esta segunda tarefa, apresentando maior número de acertos nas emoções tristeza e neutra, quando as emoções não eram identificadas corretamente, escolhiam menos as emoções alegria e dor e mais a neutra, do que os participantes com menor exaustão emocional, sugerindo que os médicos com maior exaustão são mais sensíveis à deteção da voz nos outros da emoção tristeza e fazem menos enviesamentos para a dor e alegria. Apesar de inesperados, os resultados nesta última tarefa são consistentes com os obtidos em alguns estudos que abordam o realismo depressivo, indicando maior precisão nas suas respostas.

The present study analyzed the recognition of emotions in facial and voice expressions amongst Clinicians specialized in General and Family Medical Practice (GFMP) as a function of emotional exhaustion. People with chronic pain are often afflicted with psychiatric depressive disorders. Even the commonplace, everday experience of pain can be modified by ordinary emotion. However, the neural mechanisms underlying these phenomena are still unclear. Investigating the effects of sad mood on pain perception at the behavioral and the neural levels helps to understand the co-morbidity of depression and pain problems. This dissertation focuses on: (1) examining the effects of sad mood on perception of painful stimuli, and (2) identifying the functional brain networks that could provide the neural substrate for pain perception altered by sadness.In Chapter 2, a task-evoked functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) method has been used to investigate which brain areas are activated by painful and emotional stimuli. The hypotheses are that the subjective perception of pain intensity would be greater during sadness compared to neutral mood, and significantly increased neural activation would be observed in the primary cortical areas for pain perception. To test these hypotheses, the fMRI study has recruited sixteen healthy female subjects. The experimental trials include the delivery of painful electrical shocks concurrent with or without sad mood induced by the presentation of pictures from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS). The study identifies widely-distributed cortical and subcortical areas involved in the processing of pain and the altered pain perception by sadness. The cortical areas for pain processing are mainly located in the primary/secondary somatosensory, insular and cingulate cortices. Specifically, the posterior insular and the adjacent secondary somatosensory cortices (pIn/SII) have significantly increased neural activation, when sadness intensifies subjective perception of pain.In Chapter 3, using the resting-state fMRI and path analysis, it further examines the functional networks of pain processing and altered pain perception by sadness. The pain-relevant brain areas, such as primary somatosensory cortex, anterior cingulate cortex and thalamus, are intrinsically correlated with pIn/SII during rest. The path coefficients in the pain processing functional brain network increase during painful stimuli. The path analysis has also revealed a functional network in which the pIn/SII connects with emotion-relevant areas, such as the subgenual cingulate cortex, anterior insula and amygdala. These findings provided evidence of specific neural pathways that may be relevant to understanding the comorbidity of depression and pain problems.

En plus de ce qu’il avait écrit auparavant sur la libido dans le Traité du libre arbitre, Augustin a consacré deux passages de la Cité de Dieu à la question de l’affectivité. Dans ces deux textes, qu’on trouve aux livres IX et XIV, il s’affronte aux théories stoïciennes et platoniciennes et s’efforce de montrer la particularité de la conception chrétienne de l’affectivité, en liant les affects à la volonté ; ainsi réintégrés dans l’ordo amoris qui structure l’univers augustinien, les affects sont bons si l’amour qui les motive est orienté vers le bien véritable. Toutefois, dans ces textes, Augustin ne détaille pas ce que sont les affects : il n’en définit aucun, il n’analyse pas les relations qu’on peut établir entre eux. Pourtant, si l’on envisage l’ensemble de son œuvre, on découvre des descriptions variées d’affects nombreux. Ce travail cherche à rendre compte de l’affectivité augustinienne. Il découvre la structure essentielle qui la supporte, qui n’est pas l’ordonnancement de la volonté au bien, mais d’abord l’espérance d’atteindre lavie heureuse. Cette espérance éloigne tout à fait la pensée d’Augustin de celle des philosophes stoïciens ou néoplatoniciens. Elle permet de penser l’affectivité dans sa relation au langage, de comprendre que les affects sont portés par la voix, le souffle, le rire ou les larmes, et comment ils forment eux-mêmes un langage, qui raconte le cheminement (peregrinatio) vers la vie heureuse.

First in De libero arbitrio, then in De ciuitate Dei, Augustine describes his theory of affectivity. In books IX and XIV of De ciuitate Dei, he objects to the Stoician theory of apatheia and the Platonician dualism. He points out the Christian idea of affectivity, which considers the affects depending on the will. In this way, emotions are parts of the Augustinian ordo amoris. They are good if they reveal a true love of the good. In these texts however Augustine does not explain what kind of emotions heis thinking about. He gives no definition of them and does not analyse their interconnections. But in the rest of his writings, we can find various descriptions of several emotions. In this work we try to appreciate Augutine’s affectivity, by understanding that it is not predicated on the good will, but on the hope in the beata uita. This hope makes the thought of Augustin different from Stoician or Neoplatonician philosophy. From this point of view, we can understand how affectivity is linked tolanguage, how emotions are embodied by the voice, the respiration, the laughter and the tears, and how they are also a langage, which tells us the peregrinatio to the uita beata.

Les « maladies de l’âme » ont existé de tout temps et l’homme s’est employé à les nommer, à en rechercher les causes dans un déséquilibre organique, ou encore un mauvais usage de la raison qui le priverait de la félicité, celle-ci étant reconnue comme tranquillitas animi ou salut éternel. L’aspect le plus fécond de ce mal de vivre, d’un point de vue artistique et littéraire, repose sur le concept de mélancolie, tandis qu’aujourd’hui, sa forme diffuse en est la dépression. Lacan dans Télévision, décrivant cette dernière comme « une faute morale, comme s’exprimait Dante, voire Spinoza : un péché, ce qui veut dire une lâcheté morale », place la question sur un plan décidément éthique et incite à reconsidérer la subtile réflexion des Pères de l’Eglise et de Saint Thomas, concernant la relation entre péché et « maladie de l’âme », soit encore l’acédie dans ce contexte. Dante, cité explicitement par Lacan, et puis Pétrarque vivent et écrivent durant une période cruciale, qui voit coexister diverses conceptions médicales, philosophiques et artistiques de l’acédie, la mélancolie, l’aegritudo, toutes présentes dans leurs œuvres. Si Dante semble s’appuyer sur la conception médiévale de la maladie de l’âme, essentiellement engendrée par un usage incorrect de la raison et donc une perversion de l’amore di natura, Pétrarque reste, bien que de manière non déclarée, un poète « mélancolique », de fait : il souligne en premier lieu l’irréductible antagonisme entre savoir et félicité et puise dans l’ignorance et l’insatiable désir sa définition de l’essence de la nature humaine. Il fait de ce désir, incarné par la figure éternelle et inaccessible de Laura, la matière même de son chant.

“Maladies of the soul” have always existed, and so humanity seeks to define them and to find their cause and a cure. Over the course of time they have been given many names and their origin has been identified, at different times, in an organic imbalance or in a faulty use of reason, one that drives away happiness, identified in turn as tranquillitas animi or eternal salvation. The most fertile aspect of this malaise from the artistic and literary viewpoint consists in the concept of melancholy, while the form it most commonly takes today is depression. Lacan, defining the latter in Television as a moral failing, as Dante, and even Spinoza, said: a sin, which means a moral weakness, places the question on a declaredly ethical plane and prompts us to re-examine the penetrating reflection of the Fathers of the Church and St Thomas on the relationship between sin and ‘malady of the soul’, embodied, in this context, by sloth. Dante, cited explicitly by Lacan, and Petrarch both lived and wrote in a crucial era, in which different medical, philosophical and artistic conceptions of sloth, acedia, melancholy and aegritudo coexisted, and figured in their works. ▼ Every year, individuals lose their life in traffic accidents triggered by human errors. The automotive industry intends to create autonomous driving to fix this issue by getting rid of the greatest safety issue, the driver himself. But in this area, the industry faces major problems with law regulations and technological difficulties. In collaboration with Volvo cars and Volvo’s vision, that no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo by 2020. This dissertation investigates how human errors created by emotional driving or bad driving styles can be minimized with the help of artificial intelligence assistance’s instead of using fully autonomous driving vehicles. Along Volvo Car’s design strategy including safety, intelligent, modern and warmth, a concept has been created in which cars can detect human emotions. For this purpose, methodology was conducted in a design thinking structure and various literature sources were reviewed, expert interviews were conducted at Volvo Cars with data analytics specialist and consumer researcher, as well as a psychologist focusing on behavioral therapy. Within the design methodology, such as problem statement and brainstorming, a variety of ideas were created, focusing on angry driving in traffic. The outcome of the thesis includes an investigation into safety-critical emotions in traffic and a design concept that minimizes critical errors created by angry driving and bad driving style. The design concept has been tested iteratively with formative usability evaluation and summative usability evaluation in support with lo-fi and hi-fi prototyping on smartphones and tablets. The design concept in its final state, called Volvo Intuit, has three features such as "prevention" that takes care of planning a route to a destination in a trouble-free manner with the support of an AI and an emotional traffic heat map, "education" that includes the approach of educating users in good driving style, and "motivation" that rewards the user for good driving style. As discovered from research, when negative emotions (such as anger or sadness) occur, they are difficult to eliminate and can result in an emotional increase if handled incorrectly. Consequently, the author recommends that preventive and reactive strategies should be implemented if driving with emotions occurs in traffic to avoid errors and misbehaviour.

▼ The aim of this study was to review six professionals supporters work to support adolescents in grief, and if this support is the kind of support adolescents actually need. These professional supporters are two hospital social workers, two hospice social workers and two support group leaders. The questions included in the work are; How does the professional support look like for adolescents aged 12-18, who has lost a parent in cancer? Are the adolescents getting the support they need from these professionals? The study is based on qualitative interviews based on interview guides, which where then analyzed thematically and linked to previous research and grief theory. The result indicate that adolescents may need different forms of support when their parent is dying or has died. These types of social support can be; to get information about the illness, information about what sorrow is, and at the same time, to be involved in the processes of the parents illness. Furthermore, that there is an open communication with the parent in the family about the incident. This is so that the adolescents should feel that it can open up the thoughts and feelings and feel supported by the parents, and feeling involved in what happens. Many adolescents have a difficulty in talking about emotions and thoughts in grief, and then it is important that they can be talking about them so that they can move on in the sadness processing. This can also adolescents feel that it needs thru the other social network such as relatives and friends. These various forms of social support was offered to the adolescents by the professionals. However, the result indicate that they are not so receptive in getting this support. It may depend on how much time the adolescents have to prepare themselves that the parent will die. There was generally less time for this in the hospital, but more on hospice. At most, they where receptive in support groups, where they could share their experience among like-minded adolescents. Some adolescents where also less receptive for support because of the difficulty to express their emotion and thoughts or because that they where not ready yet to grief, when the support was offered to them by professionals.
