1. Mossige, Dag Drange. The Personalistic Movement-Party and the Dangers of Duality.

Degree: PhD, Political Science, 2009, The Ohio State University

This dissertation is a comparative study of personalistic movement-parties. Movement-parties are a particular type of parties that organizationally and ideologically straddle the line between political parties and social movements. While existing works have earlier identified movement-parties of the Green and Post-Industrial Extreme Right types, this dissertation identifies a third type of this party family, the Personalistic Movement-Party. Unlike other members of this party genus, personalistic movement-parties have in the Latin American context proven highly durable, and have remained in semi-institutionalized states for prolonged periods, despite attempts at party change. The failure of this party type to institutionalize is posited to be a product of a complementary logic: 1) The dominance of a leader who has contempt for the constraints of more traditional parties, and 2) a fundamentally different conception of the role of the political party and party institutionalization by a significant sector of the party elite, where a great divide exists on even the desirability and value of becoming a more traditional political organization. After identifying this construct and its significance, a range of theoretical propositions on party change are examined in the empirical chapters of the dissertation. Through the method of elite interviewing with 40 members of the PJ/FpV in Argentina, and 80 members of the PRD in Mexico, the characteristics and logics of the personalistic movement-party are examined in depth. The study arrives at the conclusion that personalistic movement-parties are not unitary actors, but remain in a profound and permanent tension between party builders and movement advocates with sharply diverging readings of the perceived political reality, and following diverging logics. Advisors/Committee Members: Gunther, Richard (Committee Chair).

2. Khmeleva, Elena A. El tríptico tolstoyano de Doña Emilia Pardo Bazán.

Degree: MA, Spanish, 2009, Miami University

Emilia Pardo Bazán’s perception of Leo Tolstoy culminates in her short story trilogy: El conde llora, El conde sueña, and El espíritu del conde. For Pardo Bazán, who popularized Russian literature in late nineteenth-century Spain, Tolstoy was initially a model realist but then was viciously critiqued in these three works. The present thesis shows that Pardo Bazán inherited the myth of Tolstoy created in Melchior de Vogüé’s Le roman russe and adopted by the Russian anarchists in France and Spain for political propaganda. Investigation of Doña Emilia’s Tolstoyan trilogy and critical works reveals that her final bitter appraisal of the author of War and Peace, filtered through a naturalist framework, was the fruit of disillusionment with his social and religious thought. This disappointment stemmed from the Marxist critics who influenced Pardo Bazán and hastened to destroy the image of Tolstoy, as the Russian writer was a key ideological weapon for their anarchist rivals. Advisors/Committee Members: Domínguez-Búrdalo, José (Advisor).

3. Fuertes-Arboix, Monica. La sátira política en Fray Gerundio (1837-1842) de Modesto Lafuente.

Degree: PhD, Spanish and Portuguese, 2006, The Ohio State University

Fray Gerundio is a satirical newspaper, written by Modesto Lafuente y Zamalloa between 1837 and 1842, whose object was to criticize contemporary politics and society. There has been little written about this weekly, in the first place because Lafuente’s extraordinary reputation as a historian overshadowed his journalistic work. As well, a complete study of the fifteen volumes of Fray Gerundio is a monumental task, due mainly to obscure and arcane references to events and figures of society, politics and local customs of the Spain of the period. Lafuente was immersed in the pettiness of the political and literary world of the capital, and was aware of the instability of the Spanish political situation of the moment. Faced with this chaotic political and economical circumstances writers took to satire as the best lens through which to view reality. In this dissertation, I study Lafuente’s periodical and analyze it considering the style (satire and “costumbrismo”), topics, structure and the two characters, who were the main reason for the immediate success of the publication: Fray Gerundio, from whom the periodical took its name, and the lay brother Tirabeque. Fray Gerundio is a friar forced from his convent as a result of a law promulgated by the minister Juan Alvarez Mendizábal in 1835 mandating the sale of all church property. Lafuente made him into a man of letters, a suitable alter ego and spokesman for his ideas. In contrast, the lay brother Tirabeque is an ignorant rustic who has no comprehension of politics. But under this simple appearance is a sharp wit whose comical criticisms hit the nail on the head. Fray Gerundio appeared weekly and was composed of articles written entirely by Lafuente, grouped under the heading “Capilladas”. I am writing this study of the satirical periodical Fray Gerundio with the ultimate goal of incorporating Modesto Lafuente into the canon of Spanish literature. Although he is already a fundamental figure for historical studies, in my opinion he deserves to be included among the most important authors of satire, “costumbrismo” and political commentary of the 19th century. Advisors/Committee Members: García Castañeda, Salvador (Advisor).
