▼ There is an urgent need for evidence-based recreational therapy practices for the treatment of individuals experiencing heroin addiction. The meaning of the heroin experience has never been explored exclusively through a leisure lens, and as such, little is known about the unique leisure needs of this population. Flow theory offers an opportunity to explore the meaning of heroin intoxication through a leisure lens. While drug intoxication and flow are mutually exclusive experiences, drug intoxication may feel like, or mimic, flow. Previous research has suggested that the flow-like qualities of drug intoxication may be relevant in the treatment of drug addiction. The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of heroin intoxication through the leisure lens of flow theory in order to gain deeper understanding of the ways in which heroin intoxication is similar to flow, and subsequently, to gain preliminary understanding of the ways in which the similarities between heroin intoxication and flow may inform recreational therapy practice with this unique population. Directed qualitative content analysis was used to analyze a sample of 101 anonymous heroin experience narratives. The findings of this study indicate that for members of the research sample, heroin intoxication is a deeply meaningful experience that mimics flow in several key areas, including the manifestation of intrinsic rewards. The findings of this study also indicate that recreational therapists can utilize flow theory to conceptualize that which is lost when sobriety is gained, thereby gleaning vital knowledge about the leisure needs of individuals in recovery from heroin addiction. Due to the striking similarities between heroin intoxication and flow, the researcher concluded that flow theory should be a focal point in recreational therapy service delivery to patients experiencing heroin addiction. ▼ This dissertation presents an improvement in the rolling protocol for chip seals based on an evaluation of aggregate retention performance and aggregate embedment depth. The flip-over test (FOT), Vialit test, modified sand circle test, digital image processing technique, and the third-scale Model Mobile Loading Simulator (MMLS3) are employed to evaluate the effects of the various rolling parameters and to measure chip seal performance. The samples used to evaluate the chip seal rolling protocol were obtained directly from field construction. In order to determine the optimal rolling protocol, the effects of roller type, number of coverages, coverage distribution on the sublayers of a multiple chip seal (i.e., the split seal and triple seal), and rolling pattern are evaluated using the results of aggregate retention performance tests, the modified sand circle method, and the digital image process. It is found that two types of roller, the pneumatic tire roller and the combination roller, are recommended as the optimal rollers for the chip seal. In addition, it is found that the optimal number of coverages for the chip seal, as determined from measurements of the aggregate, is three coverages. Moreover, the performance of the triple seal without coverage at the bottom layer does not affect the aggregate retention performance, although the split seal does require coverage at the bottom layer. Finally, it is found that the rolling pattern is strongly related to a delayed rolling time between the aggregate spreader and the initial rolling time. Therefore, it was recommended that two pneumatic tire rollers applied initial one coverage with optimal delayed rolling time (between 2 min. and 4 min.) to entire lane width, and then the combination roller applied two additional coverages. Further, it is confirmed that the delayed rolling time is related to the aggregate moisture condition and the ambient temperature. Advisors/Committee Members: Roy H. Något som kan leda till att vänskapsrelationer formas och att privatlivet allt mer sipprar in i den professionella världen. Då forskning har påvisat att djupare relationer mellan medarbetare kan få positiva följder för organisationen i sig är detta något som ofta uppmuntras av organisationer. Dock kan det råda en osäkerhet kring vilket förhållningssätt som medarbetarna ska ha till varandra under denna vardagligare umgängesform, där alkohol dessutom är inblandat. Ska de spela rollen som kollega eller som vän? Ovissheten gällande vilken roll man ska inta i en situation leder också till att förväntningarna upplevs som oklara och svåra att leva upp till. Denna studie syftar till att undersöka om unga medarbetare upplever att after work har en betydelse för relationerna på arbetsplatsen. Frågeställningarna som studien utgår från är om after works har någon betydelse för gemenskapen, vilka faktorer som spelar roll vid formandet av relationer på en after work samt hur medarbetare uppfattar gränsen mellan yrkesperson och privatperson i förhållande till after work. Medarbetarnas upplevelser har studerats i relation till Goffmans teori om definitionen av situationen, team, intrycksstyrning samt bakre och främre regioner, Hochschilds emotionsteori om känslohantering och känsloregler samt Nippert-Engs teori om gränsdragningar mellan arbetsliv och privatliv. Tio stycken intervjuer med medarbetare mellan 20-30 år har analyserats utifrån en fenomenologisk ansats. Resultatet har visat att gemenskapen som formas under en after work har en dubbelsidig inverkan på relationerna. Vissa knyter starkare band medan andra kan känna en press att medverka för att inte hamna utanför. Det har uppmärksammats att den privata rollen allt mer inskränker på yrkesrollen, något som visat sig vara positivt då medarbetarna skapar närmare relationer till varandra men även problematiskt då vissa hellre vill hålla isär de olika sociala rollerna. Det har även framkommit att alkoholen är en central faktor vid formandet av relationer under en after work.

▼ Ground improvement in the form of soil compaction plays a important part in reclamation projects. The development of the Cofra Roller Compaction (CRC), a non-circular impact roller, has proven to be valuable in these projects. However, the heterogeneity of the subsoil causes locally a non-uniform degree of compaction. Traditional compaction control tests are limited in measuring depth, expensive and cause time delay. Therefore, the Continuous Compaction Control (CCC) and Continuous Impact Response (CIR)method were developed in order to provide more real-time information of the compaction based on the response of the drum of the roller. The aim of this study is to develop a semi-empirical energy model which is based on the contact forces of the roller-soil interface as most CCC systems, but also uses field test data as was given in the CIR system to validate this model. The relevant parameters needed for this model were obtained from the field test conducted for the HES Hartel Tank Terminal project in Rotterdam. These included the impact acceleration, the cone resistance, the in situ density, the dynamic modulus and the dynamic plate load test velocity. Two methods are considered in this thesis and both aim to reproduce the measured values from the dynamic plate load test during the field test. The first method considers the acceleration signals and includes double numerical integration of these signals to obtain the displacement, while the other considers modelling the roller as a dynamic plate load test and obtaining the displacement from solving a 2-DOF spring-mass-damper system. However, after analysis of the motion of the roller, it was observed that due to the non-circular shape of the roller, a wedge effect was created where horizontal shearing forces caused loosening of the soil. This inhibited soil compaction up to 0.5 m depth. The impact acceleration signals were thus not representative of the soil compaction. Nonetheless, the DPL-Soil model was proven to be successful in correlating the soil settlement to the dynamic modulus. This study considers a silty sand, so further research should be carried out to obtain correlations for various soils. In order to develop the semi-empirical energy model, it is thus recommended to capture an accurate acceleration response. This can be done by placing accelerometers at a minimum depth of 0.5 m, replacing the 8G accelerometer with e.g. 16G accelerometer and increasing the sampling rate to at least 1000 Hz. In order to filter out the soil variability, a field test with the roller should be performed on a homogeneous sand without fines. Correlations can then be drawn again for the same field tests performed in this thesis. Finite Element Modelling (FEM) could be used to model the interaction between the non-circular shape of the lobe, the rolling motion and the soil. Att vara del av en idrottslig gemenskap kan påverka en individs sociala identitet, det vill säga den bild individen har av sig själv som medlem i en specifik grupp. Att tillhöra normen inom gruppen påverkar den sociala identiteten i positiv riktning. Roller derby är känt som en feministisk sport där kvinnor och transpersoner har möjlighet att ta plats på ett annat sätt än i den traditionella idrotten. Målet med denna studie var att undersöka gemenskap i roller derby samt normer för gemenskapen. Fyra semistrukturerade intervjuer gjordes med aktiva roller derby-spelare. Ur en explorativ tematisk analys utlästes fyra huvudteman: Dubbelhet kring hetero- och cisnormen, En frizon eller inte?, Det här är en sport samt Do it yourself – att bygga en sport. Min analys av informanternas tal påvisade en feministisk gemenskap vilken ger utrymme för kvinnor och transpersoner att bryta mot traditionella samhälls- och idrottsnormer. Samtidigt tycktes det skapas andra normer, och samhällsnormer återskapades även i roller derby. Det tycktes också finnas en balansgång mellan att prestera å ena sidan och å andra sidan att lägga fokus på att skapa ett tryggt klimat där spelarna stannar upp och hanterar konflikter. Analysen indikerade att roller derby som sport ger dess utövare en möjlighet att bygga en social identitet utifrån att kvinnor och transpersoner är norm.

Being part of a sporting community can affect an individual's social identity which means the image the individual has of herself as a member of a specific group. Belonging to the norm within the group affects the social identity in a positive direction. Roller derby is known as a feminist sport where women and transgender people are able to behave in a different way than in the traditional sport. The aim of this study was to investigate the community in roller derby and standards of the community. Four semi-structured interviews were conducted with active roller derby players. From an exploratory thematic analysis based on four semi-structured interviews I was able to deduce four main themes: Duality around the hetero- and cis-norm, A free zone or not?, This is a sport and Do it yourself - to build a sport. My analysis showed a feminist community which provides a space for women and transgender people where they can break social norms and norms of sport. At the same time it seemed like other norms were created, and social norms were recreated in roller derby as well. There also seemed to be a balance between performance on the one hand and on the other to focus on creating a safe climate where the players takes time for managing conflicts. The analysis indicated that roller derby as a sport gives its practitioners an opportunity to build a social identity on the basis that women and transgender people are the norm.

It is important for the roller paths to remain true to allow uniform distribution of the hydraulic load on the gates to the gate wheels. Manitoba Hydro is currently replacing the distorted steel roller paths at its MacArthur Generating Station. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the physical properties of high strength proprietary grouts to determine their adequacy for use beneath new roller paths of water control gates which have unusual spacial constraints. Two full size mockups of a portion of an existing guide, with a steel overlay, were utilized in the experimental study. To investigate the stress-strain distribution in the mockup under specific loading condition, strain gauges were installed on both of the web sides of the embedded steel I-beam: one group of gauges was located just below the flange, the others were located along the mid-hight of the beam web. Force gauges were inserted to measure the pressure between the thin grout layer bottom and the top of the embedded I-beam. A special LVDT (linear variable differential transducer) assembly was made to measure the maximum displacement of grout layer. Mockup samples were subjected to static and cyclic loading procedures at two designated loading points. The grout cylindrical creep tests were conducted at the same time. It included tests at room temperature and at the elevated temperature of 50°C. The initial sustained load was 50% of the ultimate compression strength of the grout cylinder (3"x6"). Once the creep development was observed to become constant, the sustained load was raised up to 70% of ultimate strength and held constant until the end of the test. The test results indicate that the strength of the proposed grouting material is adequate to resist the required load, both statically and cyclically. Temperature has no significant effects on this specific loading situation. The proposed grouting method is proven to be simple, economic and efficient, therefore, the technique is suitable for roller path repairing. ▼ Att balansera kraven som kommer med arbetsroll och privatroll ses till stor del av den psykologiska och socialpsykologiska forskningen som emotionellt ansträngande och konfliktskapande. Forskningen beskriver negativa konsekvenser av att inte kunna lämna de emotioner och krav som förknippas med arbetet, när man går hem. Detta är också en allmän bild av relationen mellan arbete och privatliv. Men hur influerar de emotioner som uppstår i arbetslivet en individs roll som privatperson, förälder och partner? Och hur upplevs yrkesrollen och de arbetsrelaterade erfarenheterna inverka på situationer i privatlivet? Finns det upplevelser av manliga arbetsmönster som hantering av arbetsrelaterade erfarenheter och emotioner, på arbetsplatsen? Denna studie berör främst dessa frågor i förhållande till ordningspoliser, ett relativt mansdominerat yrke där arbetsuppgifterna genomsyras av emotionellt ansträngande uppgifter och upplevelser, i kontrast till det lugnare familjelivet. Hur ordningspolisers arbetsrelaterade erfarenheter och emotioner upplevs och hanteras i förhållande till deras privatliv och den mansdominerade arbetsplatsen, har studerats utifrån Greenhaus och Powells arbete- familjeförbättringsteori, Hochschilds emotionsteori, Goffmans teori om roll och fasad samt bakre och främre regioner och Brody, Shields, och Fivush och Buckners genusteoretiska perspektiv gällande emotionella uttryck och känslohantering. Tio intervjuer med ordningspoliser har analyserats med en fenomenologisk ansats. Resultatet visar, i kontrast till merparten av den tidigare forskningen, att samtliga poliser upplever att de emotionella aspekterna av arbetserfarenheterna inverkar positivt på familjelivet. Detta framgår främst i hur ordningspoliserna förhåller sig till sina barn, då de känner en tacksamhet inför familjen, som en reaktion på de många gånger negativa arbetsupplevelserna. När det gäller hanteringen av arbetsrelaterade emotioner är det märkvärt att poliserna undviker formellt samtalsstöd. Att tala om sina emotioner under arbetstid med kollegor, är det främsta sättet som poliserna får utlopp för sina känslor. Detta uppmärksammas dock många gånger inte som känslohantering, då det ses som en ytterst naturlig del av arbetslivet. Därför anser studiens författare att man, vid planering av framtida polisarbete, skulle kunna fokusera mer på denna typ av praktisk känslohantering.

▼ Sedan 70-talet och ökningen av kvinnornas deltagande på arbetsmarknaden har hemarbetets fördelning diskuterats som en viktig jämställdhetsfråga i Sverige. Det anses inte längre givet att kvinnor ska stå för matlagning medan män ska stå för försörjning, då många av de tidigare könsbaserade skyldigheterna inte längre har samma legitimitet. Många tidigare studier har utförts kring hemarbete, ofta i syfte att studera arbetsfördelning i familjer med barn. När sambor får barn förändras arbetsfördelningen mellan dem. Denna studie bidrar med att belysa samt illustrera kvinnornas egen subjektiva upplevelse av hemarbetet i familjebildningens första stadie då paren ännu inte skaffat barn. Syftet med studien har varit att studera unga svenska kvinnors subjektiva syn på hemarbete och sina roller i hemarbetet, med utgångspunkt i en kvalitativ konstruktivistisk ansats. Studien har utförts med en teoretisk utgångspunkt i rationell handlingsteori, utbytesteori samt i teorin om att göra kön. Respondenterna har intervjuats i semistrukturerade intervjuer. De har berättat om hur de upplever hemarbetet utifrån sina roller och ansvarsområden, förväntningar, jämförelser, förändringar och emotioner. På grund av urvalets storlek kan resultaten inte anses vara representativt för hela populationen. Materialet kan dock anses vara tillräckligt för att beskriva den subjektiva upplevelsen av hemarbetet inom urvalet. Enligt respondenterna finns det i enlighet med tidigare studier en stark koppling mellan att sköta hemarbete och att vara kvinna. Resultatet visar bland annat ett missnöje hos respondenterna kopplat till en ojämn arbetsdelning i hemmet, samt till deras respektives oförmåga att ta ansvar i hemarbetet. Respondenterna delar en önskan om att varje par ska ha möjlighet att skapa en individuellt anpassad arbetsdelning utan att ta hänsyn till samhällets normer kring kön och jämställdhet. De menar att en balans mellan kompensationer och motprestationer är viktigare än att ta hänsyn till normer kring jämställdheten. Resultaten visar även på de svårigheter som respondenterna upplever att potentiella förändringar är kopplade till. Samtliga respondenter anser att en förändring av dess nuvarande arbetsfördelning är möjlig, dock endast genom handlingsalternativ som är förknippade med negativa konsekvenser. Detta leder till att de undviker att försöka förändra sin situation, trots missnöje.
