▼ A major concern has been raised by Imperial Oil Inc. that dust issues extensively occurred on the gravel roads in Kearl Lake Oil Sand site in northern Alberta, Canada. Some mitigation measures had been utilized to minimize the dust. Preliminary results showed that the dust has been well controlled by applying Lean Oil Sand (LOS)-granular mixtures. A site survey has been conducted by the Centre for Pavement and Transportation Technology (CPATT) at University of Waterloo and Imperial Oil Inc. to assess the conditions of selected gravel roads at Kearl Lake site. Recommendations on road maintenance have been provided based on the findings through visual inspection, discussions with site personnel, and physical testing at the site. The effectiveness of preliminary application of LOS on the gravel roads at Kearl Lake site prompted further research on the feasibility of applying LOS as surface or base material in gravel road design. A suite of laboratory tests, including moisture content test, extraction test, gradation test, proctor test and California bearing ratio test, have been designed and conducted at CPATT to evaluate the mechanical properties of LOS-granular mixture samples with three different mixing ratios. The results show that the bitumen content of LOS provided by Imperial was found in a range of 3-4.5% by weight which can be defined as low graded oil sand. The pure LOS and the 30% granular and 70% LOS mixture are only suitable for sub-base materials. The granular material used on site, 50% granular and 50% LOS mixture, and 70% granular and 30% LOS mixture are applicable for both base and sub-base materials. However, none of these materials are suitable for surfacing material due to lack of fine aggregates. The CBR values of the granular-LOS mixtures are mainly dependent on the granular percentage. Higher granular content generally results in a higher CBR value. Pavement structural thickness design analysis has been performed considering the introduction of LOS. The AASHTO design chart method is converted into an equation-based method using digitization and regression analyses. A parametric study showed that for gravel roads that require high performance, LOS can be used as a binding agent and mixed with granular materials for mitigating the dust effect. A low mixing percentage of LOS such as the 70% granular and 30% LOS mixture should be used in this case to maintain the strength of base layer. For gravel roads which require a relatively lower performance, a higher amount of LOS may be applied into the mixture with granular materials. In this situation, the introduction of LOS can both save the cost of granular materials and mitigate the dust effect.

Considerando os implementos rodoviários como produtos industriais, pretende-se trabalhar as formas e processos de criação e aperfeiçoamento na geração de idéias e busca por soluções até a fase do projeto final de um novo produto. Também, foram considerados os processos de fabricação, modelamento do produto, e análises estruturais numéricas, que são ferramentas de auxílio na otimização do produto final. Paralelamente, foram consideradas as informações dos testes experimentais para auxiliar e validar as análises estruturais numéricas, contribuindo desta forma para o aperfeiçoamento de requisitos na fase do projeto de produto, antes de sua fabricação e lançamento no mercado. Assim, este estudo apresenta como foco o desenvolvimento de um semi-reboque para transporte de cana picada, com o intuito de exemplificar e aplicar de forma prática as ferramentas estudadas e seus respectivos usos no produto em questão. Os testes de campo foram instrumentados com sensores extensométricos resistivos para coleta de dados de níveis de tensão e posterior comparação com as análises numéricas. Os dados do produto, na fase de testes experimentais, foram obtidos em condições reais de trabalho junto a uma usina do setor sucro alcooleiro. Finalmente, considerando-se os resultados de desempenho do produto, semi-reboque rodotrem para transporte de cana picada, pode-se identificar que o uso de uma metodologia de referência para o desenvolvimento de produto, apoiada por ferramentas de análise estrutural, com testes de campo instrumentados, são confiáveis e úteis aos profissionais da engenharia de projeto e manufatura.

In this paper work, a case study using a systematic methodology is presented to apply structured methods for designing new products in an industry of road implements field. Considering the road implements as industrial products, it is intended to deal with forms and processes of developing ideas and improving the generating of ideas and quest of solutions until the final phase project of a new product. The manufacturing process will also be taken into consideration, besides the modeling of the product and numerical structural analysis which are tools to help optimize the final product. ▼ New heavy-duty vehicle regulations have caused significant reductions in hazardous air pollutants, such as particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NO_x), due to better engine management and utilization of advanced after-treatment systems. The University of Denver has collected data for gaseous and PM emission measurements from on-road heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs). The On-Road Heavy-Duty Vehicle Emissions Measurement System (OHMS) collected fuel specific emission information on individual HDVs of in-use fleets at two California locations in the spring of 2013, 2015 and 2017. These complimentary fleets, studied over multiple years, produced 7,075 measurements of gaseous and particle emission data providing the basis to quantify on-road HDV emission trends and compare a variety of factors that influence on-road emissions. The Port of Los Angeles contributes a fleet fully equipped with diesel particulate filters (DPFs) that had an observed PM increase of 30% in 2017 from 2013, but the fleet average is highly dependent on the fraction of high emitters. The second fleet measured was at the Cottonwood weigh station in Northern California, regulated at the state level and with slower fleet turn over, fleet PM emissions decrease (76% between 2013 and 2017) but at a slower rate than at the Port. Additionally, heavy and medium-duty vehicles were measured at a second weigh station in Southern California. The Fuel Efficiency Automobile Test (FEAT) was used to collect on-road fuel specific emissions for HDVs and MDVs at the Peralta weigh station near Anaheim, CA, resulting in 2,315 measurements. The HDV’s data added to measurements from 1997, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012 at this location. Two FEAT systems, one traditionally mounted atop scaffolding to collect emissions from HDVs with elevated exhaust stacks and a second, ground-level system were used for the first time to measure emissions from both MDVs and HDVs with ground-level exhaust. Introduction of new technologies show diminished NOx and PM emissions as HDVs saw a 55% NOx decrease since 2008 and a 33% reduction in IR %opacity. The MDV fleet was 2.1 years older than the HDV fleet and MDVs NO_x emissions show reductions approximately 2 model years (2014) earlier than HDVs. ▼ Greenhouse gas emissions from New Zealand’s road transport sector have been increasing rapidly since 1990. Between 1990 and 2017, New Zealand’s gross greenhouse gas emissions increased by 23.1% while emissions from the road transport sector increased by 82%; rising to 15.9 MtCO2e in 2017 from about 8.8 MtCO2e in 1990. To reduce transport emissions, the government has undertaken various initiatives including electric vehicle support, introduction of an emissions trading scheme (ETS), promotion of biofuel and other alternative fuels, and announcement of a feebate scheme. However, even though some of these policies require time to take effect, it is evident from the increase in emissions that there has so far been little progress in terms of transport emissions reduction. This raises questions over the acceptability and effectiveness of the policies taken by the government. Given the pressing need to reduce transport emissions globally and in New Zealand in particular, the present study initially investigates the major drivers of transport emissions from among a set of likely drivers, using a causality test. Because electric vehicles are widely seen as an obvious ‘solution’ within the sector, this study next examines the costs and mitigation potential of electric vehicles in the New Zealand context in order to understand the uncertainties, risks, barriers, costs, and policy gaps associated with their widespread adoption. Next, this study examines the scope for an increased carbon price signal to curb emissions growth. Finally, this study takes the view that technological and price instruments have to be seen within a wider range of possible transport policy measures, some of which may be complementary. The study therefore elicited the perspectives of a number of transport experts, and NGO and green energy activists. It ranked six mitigation policy pathways and 26 policy options on the basis of experts’, and NGO and green energy activists’ preferences. Findings of this study include that poor vehicle fuel economy is the major driver of transport emissions in New Zealand. Policies such as a high minimum vehicle fuel economy standard and/or feebate scheme could effectively help New Zealand reduce its transport emissions significantly. Electric vehicles (EVs) are also found to be potentially very effective in reducing emissions as around 80-85% of New Zealand’s electricity comes from renewable generation. Moreover, in terms of the ownership costs of using EVs, used EVs are now the most cost competitive among various vehicle types such as new EVs, used internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) and new ICEVs. An increase in the carbon price to around NZD 235 per tonne of carbon dioxide (tCO2) is also likely to help the transport sector reduce its emissions by 11% from the 1990 level and achieve the Paris target. ▼ Growing interest in the use of virtual simulation tools as part of the automotive product development process is driven by the need for automotive manufacturers and parts suppliers to develop better quality products in shorter time at lower cost. Component and full vehicle durability testing is one aspect of product development for which time savings can be realized. Traditionally, accelerated durability simulations have been performed using full vehicles by driving physical prototypes on specially designed road surfaces, simulating the vehicles' service life. In the last thirty years, durability testing has been accelerated in the laboratory environment where measured vehicle excitation inputs have been edited to contain only the most damaging portions. The goal of the current research is to advance the process further through the use of high-fidelity virtual prototype durability simulations, which reveal the consequences of design decisions made much earlier in the product development cycle before the first physical prototypes are built. Virtual durability full vehicle models are computationally complex. Linearizing the individual models of nonlinear components such as shock absorbers and elastomeric bushings has been a typical method used to simplify the vehicle model. The focus of the current research is to develop a methodology to increase the fidelity of these nonlinear component models using computationally economical techniques, thus increasing the precision of the results of the full vehicle model and the speed at which the results are obtained. Neural networks are mathematical models that possess the flexibility and computational efficiency desired for this application. These models are capable of generalizing component behaviour using training data that represents the full range of component behaviour that is to be modeled. The current research describes the methodology required to develop and implement neural network models of nonlinear automotive components into simplified and full-vehicle virtual durability models. The data used to train the neural networks includes hysteresis effects that are not modeled with the methods currently available in the multibody dynamics software package. Correlation of the results of the virtual durability simulation with the laboratory test results is performed to show the validity of the methodology that was developed. ▼ This research is focused on the characterization of the mechanical behavior of unbound granular road base materials (UGMs). An extensive laboratory investigation is described, in which various methods for determination of the mechanical properties of granular materials are examined for their applicability, particularly in developing countries. Further, the mechanical behavior of unbound granular materials as a function of the moisture content and the degree of compaction is investigated. A study into the modeling of the stress dependent mechanical behavior of granular materials is presented. Finally, verification and validation of a relatively simple characterization technique, the repeated load CBR test (RL-CBR), by the results of cyclic load triaxial testing are provided and overall practical implications of the research are presented. The laboratory investigation involves a large range of granular materials, mainly (sub-)tropical road base and subbase materials. The performed tests yield fundamental parameters that describe the strength, stiffness and resistance to permanent deformation of the materials tested. In addition to the (sub-)tropical road base and subbase materials, a recycled mix-granulate widely used in pavement construction in the Netherlands and a base course and frost protection material from Austria are incorporated to a limited extent in the laboratory testing program. Most roads in developing countries are either unpaved or have a thin asphalt surfacing, and as a consequence the granular base and subbase layers provide the bulk of the bearing capacity. Although the important structural contribution of these unbound granular layers is understood, engineering practice still greatly relies on tests which mainly give index properties of these materials. Pavement structures are designed based on empirical design methods related to a single design chart, restricting the incorporation of marginal materials or new materials for which the empirical data sets are not available. The reasons that pavement design and construction in developing countries rely on empirical design procedures that are basically developed for completely different conditions are: - the affordability and complexity of the cyclic triaxial tests required to determine the stress dependent mechanical behavior of granular materials; - the perceived complexity and unfamiliarity with the computational tools (non-linear multilayer or finite element analysis) required to model the performance of pavements using this mechanical behavior despite the availability of powerful digital computers and their penetration even to remote places. Les modèles de contact dynamique pour le bruit de roulement reposent souvent sur une hypothèse quasistatique et une approximation de massif semi-infini pour le pneu. L’objectif de la thèse est de vérifier ces hypothèses par la mesure de forces de contact sur un banc d’essai constitué d’un pneu lisse de taille réduite roulant sur un bâti cylindrique. Au préalable, l’analyse modale expérimentale du pneu permet d’identifier des modes propres de formes classiques. Bien qu’un modèle éléments finis basé sur une section de pneu homogène élastique donne des modes satisfaisants, une section hétérogène hyper-viscoélastique permet d’obtenir un bon compromis entre vibrations et contact statique. La force de contact dynamique lors du roulement du pneu sur une seule aspérité sphérique ou conique est ensuite mesurée. La relation entre la force maximale et la hauteur de l’aspérité est conforme aux lois de contact théoriques. La durée de contact sur l’aspérité est inversement proportionnelle à la vitesse. Les calculs de contact basés sur un massif semi-infini élastique permettent d’approcher correctement la force maximale mesurée pour les fortes hauteurs d’aspérités, mais pas pour les faibles. La dissymétrie du signal temporel de force est bien modélisée en introduisant la viscoélasticité dans le modèle. Les forces de contact dynamique mesurées entre le pneu et plusieurs aspérités de formes simples confirment les résultats précédents, démontrant dans l’ensemble la nature quasi-statique du contact roulant. Toutefois, les forces calculées sont sous-estimées sur les bords de l’aire de contact, montrant une limitation de l’hypothèse de massif semi-infini pour décrire la structure du pneu.

The dynamic contact models for tyre/road noise are often based on a quasi-static assumption and a half-space approximation for the tyre. The aim of the thesis is to assess these assumptions by measuring contact forces on a test rig composed of a smooth reduced-sized tyre rolling on a cylindrical basis. Beforehand, the experimental modal analysis of the tyre allows the identification of eigenmodes of classical shapes. Although a finite element model based on a homogeneous elastic tyre section yields satisfactory modes, a hyper-viscoelastic heterogeneous section provides a good compromise between vibrations and static contact. The dynamic contact force on a single spherical or conical asperity during rolling of the tyre is then measured. The relationship between the maximum force and the height of the asperity is consistent with theoretical contact laws. The contact duration on the asperity is inversely proportional to the speed. The contact calculations based on an elastic half-space assumption lead to a proper estimation of the maximum force measured on high asperity heights, but not on low asperity heights. The dissymmetry of the force time signal is well modelled by introducing the viscoelasticity in the model. Les mâchefers sont les résidus solides issus de la combustion des ordures ménagères dans des fours d’usine d’incinération. L’utilisation des mâchefers dans le domaine du Génie Civil est une voie de valorisation très intéressante car les quantités d’ordures ménagères sont de plus en plus importantes alors que les matériaux utilisés dans les travaux publics se raréfient. Les mâchefers ont été utilisés depuis des dizaines d’années dans le domaine du Génie Civil. Cependant, les caractéristiques mécaniques du matériau « mâchefer » ne sont pas très bien connues. Ce travail de thèse contribue à l’amélioration des connaissances des caractéristiques mécaniques des mâchefers.Après une caractérisation géotechniques (paramètres de nature, paramètres mécaniques, paramètres d’état), chimiques et environnementales, le potentiel d’utilisation de ces mâchefers est évalué selon la Circulaire du 9 mai 1994 et selon le Guide technique SETRA-LCPC 2000 « Réalisation des remblais et des couches de forme ».Dans la partie expérimentale, des essais oedométriques et triaxiaux sont effectués. En ce qui concerne des essais oedométriques, l’effet de l’énergie de compactage et de l’immersion des éprouvettes ainsi que l’effet de la vitesse de chargement de l’essai sont évalués. L’effet de la vitesse de chargement est également étudié par des séries d’essais triaxiaux. Grâce aux essais triaxiaux, les paramètres mécaniques comme le module d’Young, le coefficient de Poisson, l’angle caractéristique, l’angle de dilatance, la cohésion et l’angle de frottement ont été ainsi déterminés. Ces paramètres mécaniques propres au mâchefer étudié pourront être intégrés dans un schéma de dimensionnement spécifique aux structures de chaussées à base de mâchefers. Ces principaux paramètres permettent d’évaluer l’influence de la pression de confinement effective. Les évolutions du module de déformation selon la déformation axiale et de la variation du déviateur de pression selon la pression moyenne sont également étudiées. Un ensemble de points caractérisant l’état limite a été déterminé à partir des essais triaxiaux. Il caractérise la forme de la surface de charge de ce type de mâchefer.Enfin, les essais triaxiaux ont été simulés. Cette partie du travail contribue à la modélisation du comportement mécanique des mâchefers. Le modèle de Mohr-Coulomb et de Nova sont choisis pour caractériser l’évolution de matériau « mâchefer » sous l’effet d’actions mécaniques extérieures. Ce sont des exemples types de modèles de comportement des sols complètement identifiables uniquement sur des essais triaxiaux classiques. La simulation des essais triaxiaux est réalisée à l’aide du progiciel CESAR-LCPC. Les résultats de modélisations obtenues sont très prometteurs.

▼ Bioptic telescopic spectacles (BTS) allow people with vision impairment to obtain driving licensure even when their visual acuity does not meet normal state standards. BTS are spectacles with a small telescope implanted in one or both of the lenses. The telescope is used for brief periods during driving to spot distant targets such as road signs and traffic signals. The study described in this dissertation examines visual and demographic associations among obtaining a bioptic driving license, training and road testing results, and motor vehicle collisions in patients with low vision. The study also compares the collision rate of bioptic drivers to that of a control group of non-bioptic drivers matched on age and sex. A retrospective study of medical records was completed for patients examined for entry into the Ohio bioptic driving program at the College of Optometry at The Ohio State University over a five year period. Data were collected on visual factors, documented driver training, licensure testing results, and post-licensure driving record. No significant associations were found among visual and demographic factors and obtaining licensure after an initial vision examination. Several factors were significantly associated with the amount of training documented for candidates for licensure, including age and previous non-bioptic driving experience. The amount of training documented was associated with road testing results, but not with driving safety after licensure. Previous driving experience was also significantly associated with occurrence of motor vehicle collisions (MVC) in bioptic drivers, with drivers without previous experience having approximately 2.5 times as many collisions per year of licensure than those with previous experience. Other significant associations with MVC in bioptic drivers included age and the number of non-collision related convictions. Nystagmus was independently associated with MVC, but no other patient visual factors were associated with MVC. The rate of MVC per year for bioptic drivers was significantly greater than that of a group of control drivers matched on age and sex. This is consistent with past studies of bioptic collision rates. It is also consistent with past findings that groups with various medical restrictions have higher collision rates than control groups. This study does not address driving exposure in terms of actual mileage driven by bioptic drivers, and so no conclusions can be made regarding the rate of collision per mile driven for bioptic drivers, the visual or demographic associations with that figure, or how bioptic drivers compare to non-bioptic drivers in terms of collisions per mile driven.
