▼ Theoretically this thesis was grounded in the discourse of transpersonal psychology and the related discourse of transpersonal feminism. The focus was on a particular category of transpersonal phenomena - past-life experiences. These experiences were viewed from a poetic and therapeutic perspective as being healing stories of the unconscious that served to articulate psychological and spiritual realities of the human psyche within both the personal and the collective unconscious. They were thus not questioned in regard to their literal occurrence. The central aims of this thesis were to (a) document and faithfully describe a participant's past-life experiences that occurred during selected psychotherapy sessions, (b) engage in a hermeneutic dialogue between the participant's past-life experiences and contemporary transpersonal literature, and, in so doing, to evaluate and extend existing theory, (c) uncover the archetypal significance of past-life experience and its relationship to the re-emerging Feminine within patriarchal culture and, finally, (d) show how the past-life stories and images contribute to the process of inner healing and transformation, a process termed 'spiritual emergence'. The research was a phenomenological-hermeneutic case study, comprising the selection of eight consecutive psychotherapy sessions in which nine past-life experiences were identified. These sessions were reduced to narrative synopses, and a hermeneutically grounded thematic analysis of a total of six past-life themes were explicated. Principle conclusions reached were that past-life stories and images contribute to the process of spiritual emergence and empowerment as well as to the re-emergence of the Feminine consciousness. Moreover, as healing stories of the unconscious, these past-life experiences can be understood as expressions of the collective struggle with unresolved archetypal forces within the collective psyche, as well as echoes of personal conflicts and dilemmas from the individual unconscious.

▼ This dissertation research examines how shared aspects of identity are constructed among the Druze in Lebanon and how it contributes to conceptualizations of heritage. Assessing the educational resources focused on aspects of Druze heritage, the barriers to cultural preservation were elucidated. Utilizing a number of qualitative research methods, participants’ feedback constructed a narrative that considers what they believe to be at risk for their community. These issues included addressing a perceived knowledge gap wherein the majority of Druze expressed a need to expand the educational resources in their community. Participants defined the kinds of resources and social supports that are lacking and explained how existing texts, lectures, and seminars should be improved, increased, and made more accessible. This dissertation is a result of ethnographic fieldwork which I conducted throughout 2014. Having lived in the town of Aley, Lebanon, I conducted research interviews with individuals that represented a broad spectrum of society, taking into account women and men of different ages with diverse social, economic, and educational backgrounds. Through participant observation, I shared many of the daily experiences of research participants and observed the Druze in their regular lives, their social gatherings, and at sites of historical significance. Using a political economic theoretical framework, this research also explored the diversity of ways in which social phenomena are contested among the Druze in Lebanon. While much of the anthropological and social science research on heritage focuses on its material components, utilizing pre-established models that conflate heritage with tangible symbolic expressions, a political economic approach insists that the context of social structures are taken into account. This also lends itself to a conceptualization of heritage as a process by which individuals create meaning in their lives, which are shaped by social contexts such as history and contemporary culture. This research highlights the fact that a priori models that fail to consider both social structures and the fundamental perspectives of participants are based upon ideologies that lack a critical academic lens. This dissertation demonstrates that while Druze particularism often necessitated a level of conformity and ascription to traditional values, the diversity of individual approaches to shared identity contributed to the plasticity of cultural forms and varieties of self-expression. As well, expanded and improved educational resources that encourage individuals to learn more about their history and the basic tenets of their faith were widely seen as a valued means of ensuring the society’s continuation.

▼ Bu çalışmada, İslam Felsefesinde sistem kurucu bir filozof olan İbn Sînâ'nın, nefs ve mead görüşleri çerçevesinde tenasüh hakkındaki görüşleri üzerinde durulmuştur. Tez içerisinde, ruh göçü fikrinin İbn Sînâ'dan önce ortaya çıkmış dinlerde ve düşünce ekollerinde yapmış olduğu yolculuk hakkında bilgiler verilmiştir. Çalışmanın birinci bölümünde bu yolculuğun, ana hatları İbn Sînâ'nın yaşadığı dönem ile sınırlandırılarak ortaya konulmuştur. İkinci bölümde; İslam felsefe geleneğinde bu düşünceyi benimsemiş olsun ya da olmasın, İbn Sînâ'dan önce yaşamış filozoflardan ruhların bedenlere tekrar dönmesi hakkında, doğrudan ve dolaylı olarak yapmış olduğu değerlendirmelerden bahsedilmiştir. Üçüncü bölümde İbn Sînâ'nın nefsin ispatına yönelik delilleri ve nefs için yapmış olduğu tanımlar verilip nefsin filozofun felsefesinde Ay altı ve ay üstü âlem arasında yapmış olduğu işlev ortaya konulmuştur. Nefsin bu işlevi yerine getirdiği yetiler hakkında bilgi verilmiştir. Bu bölümün sonunda insani nefsin, nefsin diğer türlerinden farklı olarak ölümsüz olduğu vurgulanmıştır. Dördüncü bölümde İbn Sina'nın din – felsefe uzlaşmasına yönelik, ahiret hakkında fikirlerine değinilmiştir. Bu bağlamda, vahiy tarafından bildirilen cismani dirilişin, insanların hakikati daha kolay kavramaları ve kendilerine fayda verecek olan davranışlara kolay ve benimseyici bir şekilde yönelmesi amacıyla resmedilen bir temsil olarak kabul etmesine yönelik yorumlar değerlendirilmiş, insanların ölümden sonraki durumuyla ilgili olarak ortaya konulan farklı görüşlerden bahsedilmiştir. In this study, we consider on the views of Avicenna who is a system founder in Islamic Philosophy about reincarnation in the frame of soul and afterlife views. In the study firstly we give informations about the journey of the reincarnation thoughs to the various thinking echols and the religions which emerged before Avicenna. On the second part, with more detailed manner than the first we told about the direct evaluationof Alkindus, Alfarbius and Rhases who lived before Avicenna about souls coming back to the bodies, whether it accepts this opinion in Islamic tradition or not. On the third part, after the definitions for soul and the evidence on proving the soul, the central function which is done between below the moon and over the moon universes in the philosophers philosophy is brought up. ▼ This dissertation is a philosophical examination of the concept of reincarnation from an African point of view. It does so, largely, from the cultural perspective of the Akan people of Ghana. In this work, reincarnation is distinguished from such related concepts as metempsychosis and transmigration with which it is conflated by many authors on the subject. In terms of definition, therefore, the belief that a deceased person can be reborn is advanced in this dissertation as referring to only reincarnation, but not to either metempsychosis or transmigration. Many scholars would agree that reincarnation is a pristine concept, yet it is so present in the beliefs and worldviews of several cultures today (including those of Africa). A good appreciation of the concept, it can be seen, will not be possible without some reference to the past. That is why some attempt is first made at the early stages of the dissertation to show how reincarnation was understood in the religious philosophies of ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Indians, Chinese and the Incas. Secondly, some link is then established between the past and present, especially between ancient Egyptian philosophy and those of contemporary sub-Saharan Africa. In modern African thought, the doctrine of reincarnation has not been thoroughly researched into. Even so, some of the few who have written on the subject have denied its existence in African thought. The dissertation rejects this denial, and seeks to show nonetheless that reincarnation is generally an irrational concept. In spite of its irrationality, it is acknowledged that the concept, as especially presented in African thought, raises our understanding of the constitution of a person as understood in the African culture. It is also observed that the philosophical problem of personal identity is central to the discussion of reincarnation because that which constitutes a person is presumed to be known whenever a claim of return of a survived person is made. For this reason, the dissertation also pays significant attention to the concept of personal identity in connection, especially, with the African philosophical belief in the return of persons. This paper, Science and Education notions in Spiritism, studies spiritism, a doctrine with scientific, philosophical and religious content expounded by Allan Kardec in the 19th century. (Allan Kardec was the nom de plume of Hypollite León-Denizard Rivail, a Catholic French scientist, thinker and educator who followed the Pestalozzi theory.). This paper presents his doctrine and also analyses its viability as a didactic-pedagogical program. Its a theoreticalbibliographical research mainly based on Kardec`s works. Spiritism presents information about man, nature, the origin and the destiny of the worlds, the material and spiritual spheres, God and Christian religious principles based on trance communications received by ``mediums``. It emphasizes moral education and it focuses on persons as immortal spirits in constant evolution through consecutive lives (reincarnation). Spiritism appeared as part of a large surge of Spiritualism which also included experiences in magnetism and hypnotism. Kardec states that he did his research according to the predominant positivist model, which implies in experimental and empirical observation within an inductive-deductive thought process, so within the third state of knowledge proposed by Comte (three-state theory ). As all the spiritism content was dictated by spirits it is said that this is not Kardecs doctrine but the spirits`. Brazil, the largest spiritistic country in the world, received spiritism mainly as a religion but during the 19th and 20th centuries isolated educational experiences occurred. These experiences failed due to the lack of financial and human resources. Nowadays some Brazilian spiritistic thinkers try to elaborate an educational spiritistic proposal related to a spiritistic pedagogy. However, these theories, as presented, seem to be impractical considering that they propose a religious humanist public education to Brazil which has a public educational system directed by the Ministry of Education. Besides, spiritism is about the education of the spirit, of the individual man, the immortal being whose goal is, after consecutive lives, to became moral and achieve perfection meeting God. So, a project of spiritistic Pedagogy for the Brazilian public education system needs more research, financial resources, and, above all, concrete and practical experiences that can show spiritism as a viable praxis for the educational system.

Smrt in posmrtno življenje sta vedno aktualna fenomena, posebej v filozofiji. V magistrski nalogi smo raziskali zgodovino pojmovanja posmrtnega življenja v dveh znamenitih knjigah mrtvih. Zanimalo nas je egipčansko pojmovanje smrti in umiranja, zato smo proučili ritual pokopavanja mrtvih in vse obrede, ki spadajo zraven. Zanimala nas je tudi Tibetanska knjiga mrtvih in pojmovanje smrti in posmrtnega življenja v njej. Proučili smo mnenja filozofov iz antike ter srednjega in novega veka. V tretjem poglavju magistrske naloge smo obravnavali filozofske probleme smrti, pri čemer smo ugotovili, da definicija smrti ni dovolj pojasnjena. Zanimalo nas je, kaj pomeni pojem smrti za človeka in kako se sooča z lastno smrtnostjo, ali je strah pred smrtjo racionalen in ali ima smrt sploh smisel. V četrtem poglavju smo obravnavali dušo kot pogoj za posmrtno življenje. Če namreč posmrtno življenje obstaja, potem pomeni, da mora obstajati nekaj takšnega, kot je duša. V tem poglavju smo raziskali Platonovo in Aristotelovo teorijo ter problem duše in telesa pri Descartesu. V zadnjem poglavju magistrske naloge smo predstavili dva ključna in najbolj znana navidezna dokaza posmrtnega življenja, in sicer NDE ali obsmrtne izkušnje in reinkarnacijo ali vnovično rojstvo. Pri raziskovanju posmrtnega življenja s filozofske perspektive smo spoznali, da je bila tema aktualna tako v preteklosti kot sedanjosti in da o njej lahko povemo veliko, obenem pa nič, kar bi lahko z gotovostjo znanstveno dokazali ali ovrgli. Lahko le predpostavljamo in sklepamo na podlagi mnenj različnih mislecev, se z njimi strinjamo ali ne, ali pa si ustvarimo lastno mnenje in v tem prepričanju živimo.

Death and afterlife are always topical phenomena, especially in philosophy. In the master's thesis, we investigated the history of the concept of afterlife in two famous books of the dead. We were interested in the Egyptian notion of death and dying, so we studied the ritual of the burial of the dead and all the rituals that belong to that. We were also interested in the Tibetan Book of the Dead and the concept of death and afterlife in it. We studied the opinions of philosophers from antiquity, middle age and new age. In the third chapter of the master's thesis, we addressed the philosophical problems of death, and found that the definition of death is not sufficiently explained. We were interested in what constitutes the concept of death for man and how he faces his own mortality, whether fear of death is rational, and whether death has any sense at all. In chapter four, we considered the soul as a condition for afterlife. If there is afterlife, then this means that there must be something like the soul. In this chapter, we studied Plato's and Aristotle's theory and the problem of the soul and body in Descartes. In the last chapter of the master's thesis, we presented two key and best-known apparent proofs of afterlife, near-death experiences and reincarnation or rebirth. Le Druzisme représente un courant philosophico-religieux qui peut être considéré comme une doctrine d'apparence religieuse, de pensée philosophique et systématique, de référence gnostique dans l'histoire de l'Islam. Ses adeptes vivent en communauté hermétique, ses sages (šeiẖs) se retirent dans des réclusions (ẖalwāt) en s'isolant comme des mystiques, ils se livrent à une retraite spirituelle sans pratique religieuse, ils ne se réfèrent à aucune tradition précédente des religions monothéistes, de par leurs écrits ou leurs pratiques. Ils conservent une tradition et une éthique avec un code de conduite et des interdits culinaires. En revanche, le Druzisme est né au sein de l'Isma`ilisme, il établit un lien intellectuel et spirituel avec la philosophie antique et avec le néoplatonisme tout en assimilant des éléments des religions d'orient avec des éléments grecs helléniques. Peut-on alors parler d'une secte de l'Islam, du moment où il n'y a aucun lien avec ce dernier sinon le milieu historique dans lequel celle-ci est vu le jour? Peut-on parler de religion, quand il n'y a aucune religiosité ou pratique religieuse exprimée ou vécue? S'agit-il de dire que l'on est face à une théosophie alors que le lien entre les membres de la communauté n'est pas fondé sur la philosophie et que le commun des Druzes n'est pas philosophe? Comment qualifier ce phénomène d'une communauté dont le lien est une foi qui n'est pas exprimée religieusement, et une doctrine dont le contenu n'est pas révélé, à laquelle s'attachent des membres qui ne le connaissent qu'une fois initiés? En somme, qui sont les Druzes et qu'est-ce que le Druzisme? Existe-t-il un lien entre cette doctrine et la gnose?

Druzism is a philosophico-religious movement which may be considered primarily as a doctrine but with a religious appearance, a systematic and philosophical thinking, with some reference to Gnosticism in the history of Islam. Its adherents live in a community of hermits, its wisemen (šeiẖs) retire in seclusion (ẖalwāt) by isolating themselves like mystics, as they deliver themselves to living in a spiritual retreat, without any religious practice ; they refer to no previous religious traditions even among the monotheistic ones, whether in reference to their sacred writings or religious practice. The Druze adheres to a tradition and a code of ethics and behaviour, as well as to culinary prohibitions. Druzism itself however, was born in the heart of Ismailism, while establishing an intellectual and a spiritual link with both ancient philosophies and neoplatonism, all the while assimilating various element of mid and far-eastern religions, mixed with Greek and Hellenistic ideas. Can we therefore speak of the Druze as if forming a sect of Islam? Can we even speak of a religion where in fact there is no trace of religiosity or religious practice either expressed or lived? Is it possible that we are facing theosophy where the link between the members of the community is certainly not founded on a philosophy? How can one qualify this phenomenon of a community…

▼ The stereotypical view of Empedocles’ thought as a synthesis of "Ionic" and "Eleatic" thought does not capture what is determinant for understanding his philosophy. In our dissertation we argue that it is characterized by the interweaving and mutual attribution of cosmology and eschatology on a common logical background: the alternation of the one and many and the consequent conception of the universal affinity of beings. The explanation of the world and the torment about human suffering are intertwined and ultimately form a single doctrine, where cosmology and eschatology have logical unity and develop an organic relation. In the light of the Papyrus of Strasbourg this interweaving is substantiated. By surveying its reconstructions (Martin & Primavesi 1999, Janko 2004 and Primavesi 2008) and replacing the motif-centered with a thematic-centered analysis, we identify the spiral exposition of the Empedoclean doctrine. This method leads to a more accurate interpretation of the verses, highlighting their particular semantic framework. The thematic-centered analysis negates the simplistic understanding of each phenomenon only through the motif of union and separation and allows for other particular logics of movement to emerge. Our work explores a number of eschatological and cosmological issues that remain under discussion. We argue that the cosmic cycle includes two cosmogonies and two zoogonies, each zoogony being characterized by a particular logic, and the succession of zoogonic stages must not be viewed as an escalation of power of each force, but through the particular logic of creation of living beings. In the context of the study of eschatology, we propose a new interpretation of the last stages of the cycle of reincarnations, based on the logic of the Odyssey on transition from the non-human to the human world. Examining the views in favor of reducing demons to cosmological principles, we argue that this cannot be reconciled with the Empedoclean cosmological view. Based on the reports of Aristotle in the work On the Soul, we demonstrate that it appears that Empedocles did not reduce demons to cosmological terms. Examining the proposals for the identification of demons with specific mythological figures, we conclude that this is not the case. Empedocles designs his "daimonology" by primarily reproducing the basic features of reciprocal eschatology about a personal conscious soul that survives after the death of the body, is judged, punished and redeemed, modifying the element of immortality into longevity due to the cosmological determination of eschatology. Empedocles’ δαίμων is an eschatological category that combines mystical and Hesiodic mythological elements; it is inscribed in its rational cosmology and is, therefore, bounded by it. Our whole study leads us to believe that Empedocles most probably wrote one work. ▼ This dissertation concentrates on those factors which form the doctrine of G-dly reward and punishment. In other words, the philosophical approach amongst Jewish thinkers from the Middle Ages to the above subject, which taken together give expression to the doctrine of reward and ptmishment, or at least to the possibility of determining such a doctrine. The definition of correct behaviour is not of interest for pwposes of this dissertation, nor is human judgement of behaviour, even according to a G-dly doctrine; only the A-lmighty's judgement and implementation thereof The following points are of note. Research into the specific approach of one individual philosopher is not the aim of this dissertation, but rather a collective crystallised viewpoint according to various different Jewish philosophers, in order to reach a harmonious formation of the desir~ goal. Hence the details are also important since they assist towards the goal. The views of the philsophers are of interest and not their source, viz. from whom these views were received or by whom the philosophers were influenced, as is usually the case in research. Nevertheless, this aspect is elaborated upon in the introduction to this dissertation, in the style of the customary academic research approach. An analytical comparison is made between the opinions of various authors, taking into account the finer points of their words, as well as between the differing opinions expressed by a single author in his various writings, and conclusions are drawn, the results of which are highly significant. Besides the fact that it is not within our power to adjudicate between the views of the great Jewish thinkers, this is even more true here, due to the metaphysical nature of the subject, which makes logical, rational-realistic judgement very difficult. Nevertheless, some criteria have been established for making such a decision. In summary, this dissertation is an attempt to research many diverse opinions in the treasury of Jewish thought from the Middle Ages, and to extract those opinions from which a complete system of the doctrine of reward and punishment can be built. Private religion is a faith that isn’t practiced in an organised religious community. Many people do not want to accept a religious concept that is already defined. To choose a conception of faith based upon personal preferences fits some modern man better. The purpose of this thesis is to examine if it’s possible to create a personal religion and how such a process looks. The function of Internet for people’s religiosity is also examined. Three informants have been interviewed by e-mail. The common denominator is the faith in reincarnation. The result shows that there are some central points in common in their faith. They are critical of the traditional religion. The faith is chosen and is adapted to the personal needs. The individual is in the centre. There is a strong belief in the human being and her ability to influence her own life. Religious authorities are not important. Neither are religious ceremonies significant, the informants have instead created their own rites. A part of the thesis contains a study of religious forum on the Internet which shows that Internet can function as a traditional religious community. People can acquaint themselves with other people’s stories, ask questions and have there own thoughts virtually confirmed.

Privatreligion är en tro som inte utövas i organiserad religiös gemenskap. Många drar sig för att köpa ett religiöst koncept som någon annan redan definierat. Att välja trosföreställning baserat på egna preferenser passar en del moderna människor bättre. Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka om det går att skapa en egen religion och hur en sådan process ser ut. Även Internets funktion för människors religiositet undersöks. Tre informanter har intervjuats via mejl. Den gemensamma nämnaren är tron på reinkarnation. Resultatet visar att det finns några centrala beröringspunkter i deras tro. De är kritiska till den traditionella religionen. Tron väljs och anpassas till de egna behoven. Individen är i centrum. Det finns en stark tilltro till människan och hennes möjlighet att påverka sitt liv. Religiösa auktoriteter är inte viktiga. Inte heller religiösa ceremonier är betydelsefulla, utan informanterna har utvecklat personliga riter. En del av uppsatsen består av en studie av religiösa forum på Internet vilken visar att Internet kan fungera som en traditionell religiös gemenskap. Personer kan ta del av andras berättelser, ställa frågor och få sina egen tankar bekräftade virtuellt.

▼ This study uses the Tibetan mandala, a Buddhist meditation aid and sacred artform, as a secular critical model by which to analyse the complete fictions of author David Mitchell. Discussing his novels, short stories and libretti, this study maps the author’s fictions as an interconnected world-system whose re-evaluation of secular belief in galvanising compassionate ethical action is revealed by a critical comparison with the mandala’s methods of world-building. Using the mandala as an interpretive tool to critique the author’s Buddhist influences, this thesis reads the mandala as a metaphysical map, a fitting medium for mapping the author’s ethical worldview. The introduction evaluates critical structures already suggested to describe the author’s worlds, and introduces the mandala as an alternative which more fully addresses Mitchell’s fictional terrain. Chapter I investigates the mandala’s cartographic properties, mapping Mitchell’s short stories as integral islandic narratives within his fictional world which, combined, re-evaluate the role of secular belief in galvanising positive ethical action. Chapter II discusses the Tibetan sand mandala in diaspora as a form of performance when created for unfamiliar audiences, reading its cross-cultural deployment in parallel with the regenerative approaches to tragedy in the author’s libretti Wake and Sunken Garden. Chapter III identifies Mitchell’s use of reincarnation as a form of non-linear temporality that advocates future-facing ethical action in the face of humanitarian crises, reading the reincarnated Marinus as a form of secular bodhisattva. Chapter IV deconstructs the mandala to address its theoretical limitations, identifying the panopticon as its sinister counterpart, and analysing its effects in number9dream. Chapter V shifts this study’s use of the mandala from interpretive tool to emerging category, identifying the transferrable traits that form the emerging category of mandalic literature within other post-secular contemporary fictions, discussing works by Michael Ondaatje, Ali Smith, Yann Martel, Will Self, and Margaret Atwood.
