This brings about a great need for a quick and efficient method of land examination from which to plan reforestation measures and make up management plans. This thesis is an explanation of one method, that of using aerial photographs in conjunction with limited ground observation. An example is given which illustrates that each l.00 saved in the planning stage of forest regeneration means l9.23 more profit at the end of 100 years using an interest rate of 3% compounded annually. More and more forest industries are beginning to use aerial photos for management plans, reforestation programs, and even cutting plans and preliminary road location. The first part of this thesis deals with the using of the aerial photographs and the recognition of the information found on them as substantiated by ground examination. The Blodgett tract is 2400 acres of logged and burned-over land in northwestern Oregon which was deeded to the Oregon State College School of Forestry for the purpose of establishing a reforestation study area. The photographs used were standard 9 x 9 inch contact prints of negative photographed with a f-l2" Aerial Mapping Camera by Delano Aerial Surveys of Portland, Oregon. The average scale of photography was 1:12,000. The photographs were taken to the Blodgett tract and used as a guide in examining certain areas of the tract. Next a base map was made of the area using a slotted template laydown for horizontal control. The planimetry was transferred to the base map from the aerial photos by means of a multiscope. Fuel types were also determined from the photos. Other maps, including the proposed road and water development map, the hour control map and the seen area map, were also prepared. They were not particularly dependent upon the photographs for their information, except that the roads were located along old railroad grades and the water holes were beaver ponds, both of which could be observed on the photographs. A second land examination was made to correlate the types of vegetation on representative areas with the vegetational types given those areas from aerial photograph interpretation. Certain changes were made where the land examination showed the stocking or the species composition to differ from the photo interpretation. Well defined areas of each type were examined by the stocked quadrat method of reproduction examination and final classifications were based on the results. In conclusion to the first part of the thesis the author states that the field work in preparing a reforestation plan can be reduced to one-fifth of the time required by land examination alone. Forest boundaries and type boundaries may be easily recognized on the photographs and transferred to the base map. Fuel type and hour control maps may be made from the photos. ▼ Since the 1920s, forest coverage in the northeastern United States has recovered from disease, clearing for agricultural and urban development, and the demands of the timber industry. Such a dramatic change in ground cover can influence heat and moisture fluxes to the atmosphere, as measured in altered landscapes in Australia, Israel, and the Amazon. In this study, the impacts of recent reforestation in the northeastern United States on summertime precipitation and surface temperature were quantified by comparing average modern values to 1950s values. Weak positive (negative) relationships between reforestation and average monthly precipitation and daily minimum temperatures (average daily maximum surface temperature) were found. There was no relationship between reforestation and average surface temperature. Results of the observational analysis were compared with results obtained from reforestation scenarios simulated with the BUGS5 global climate model. The single difference between the model runs was the amount of forest coverage in the northeast United States; three levels of forest were defined - a grassland state, with 0% forest coverage, a completely forested state, with approximately 100% forest coverage, and a control state, with forest coverage closely resembling modern forest coverage. The three simulations were compared, and had larger magnitude average changes in precipitation and in all temperature variables. The difference in magnitudes between the model simulations observations was much larger than the difference in the amount of reforestation in each case. Additionally, unlike in observations, a negative relationship was found between average daily minimum temperature and amount of forest coverage, implying that additional factors influence temperature and precipitation in the real world that are not accounted for in the model. Biodiversity is threatened by habitat loss and degradation. In Hawaiʻi, species persistence will likely depend on varying degrees of habitat restoration. Efforts to restore habitats for Hawaiian forest birds include reforestation of degraded pasture with Acacia koa (koa), a valuable endemic hardwood. I investigated the ecological benefits of koa reforestation areas (KRAs) to forest bird conservation at two sites on Hawaiʻi Island. I compared vegetation characteristics of KRAs and native forests and found that koa forestry can facilitate native understory development in some cases. The "Field of Dreams" hypothesis, which states that animals will colonize restored vegetation structure, was assessed by analyzing bird behavior in KRAs and native forest sites. Two endangered species in this community (Hawaii akepa (Loxops coccineus) and Hawaiʻi Creeper (Oreomystis mana)) are missing or uncommon in the KRAs. Four species have colonized the KRAs: Hawaiʻi 'Amakihi (Hemignathus virens), 'Elepaio (Chasiempis sandwichensis), 'Oma'o (Myadestes obscurus) and 'Akiapola'au (Hemignathus munroi). 'I'iwi (Vestiaria coccinea) and 'Apapane (Himatione sanguinea) allocate time differently in the KRAs and native forests. Sequential behavior analysis suggested that KRAs and intact forests may not be equivalent habitat for juveniles of four species. Six species of forest birds use the KRAs for foraging. I found that foraging microhabitat differs between KRAs and native forest sites for Hawaiʻi 'Amakihi. Foraging niche breadth and overlap for all species were similar across sites. I calculated indices of foraging effort and opportunity and found that !Apapane appear to forage differently in the KRAs and native forest sites. My results suggest that animal behavior can be informative in assessment of restoration success. I conclude that KRAs have ecological benefits: they provide some ecosystem services and can enhance native forest understory development. KRAs provide foraging habitat for Hawaiian forest birds. While four bird species have colonized the KRAs, we will not know if they have done so successfully until demographic studies can be completed. Finally, the conservation benefit of the KRAs exists only as long as they are standing: if these forests are to be harvested in the future, extreme care will be required if it is to be sustainable.

▼ Burning of logging slash resulted in apparent sterilisation of the soil surface to a depth of about 2cm and also increased soil surface pH, which in localised areas reached sufficiently high values to be toxic to seedlings. In vitro studies showed that high pH conditions caused seedling mortality in E. regnans although the lethal effect of a transient elevated pH was reduced at temperatures sufficiently low to delay germination. The pH above which detrimental effects were expected was in the range 8.4 to 9.0. Suppression of seedling growth was observed in field soil with glasshouse studies showing that this suppression was partly overcome by prior slash-burning or by addition of N and P fertilisers. Availability of soil moisture appeared to be the main factor limiting seedling establishment in the field. Slash-burning was associated with increased seedling emergence but also with increased mortality rates compared to an unbumt control. Although fungi were found to be associated with the majority of dying seedlings from the field, their involvement in seedling pathology was unclear. Most common among these isolates was a species of Phoma, representative isolates of which caused cliscolouration and stunting of E. regnans seedlings in vitro, but were not otherwise markedly pathogenic. Species of Alternaria and Cladosporium were also commonly found on seedlings and probably present as saprophytes. Pythiaceous fungi were isolated from seedlings but pathogenicity of these was not examined. Rhizoctonia solani (pectic zymogram groups ZG5, ZG7 and ZG10) were isolated from seedlings that had died in field soil under glasshouse conditions. Representatives of R. solani groups ZG5 and ZG7 were pathogenic to E. regnans in vitro• however Rhizoctonia was not commonly isolated from the field. Three bacterial rhizosphere isolates (two Pseudomonas fluorescens and Bacillus circulans) and a fungus (Epicoccum purpurascens) from E. regnans were evaluated as fungal antagonists. Three of these were shown to reduce mortality (due to R. solani ZG7) of seedlings in vitro following inoculation in the vicinity of seeds, with E. purpurascens providing 100% protection after 30 days (compared with 22% survival of controls). Surprisingly, B. circulans and E. purpurascens also increased seed germination rates. Of the antagonists, only E. purpurascens improved seedling establishment in a glasshouse trial, both in the presence and absence of R. solani ZG7. However neither treatment with E. purpurascens nor the fungicide Raxil (applied to seed in combination with Mancozeb) resulted in improvement in seedling establishment in a small field trial.

▼ The effect of different stages of forestry practices on regeneration of Eucalyptus regnans and understorey and rainforest species was determined for logged coupes in South West Tasmania. Observations were made across six different logged sites which were mixed forests prior to logging. Results at different stages of logging activity were investigated with undisturbed mixed forests used as controls. Mudstone is the main rock type at the study sites, and on some sites was found to be combined with quartzite. Study sites were divided into two groups. The first group, unburnt sites, consisted of unlogged mixed forest sites, sites from which eucalypts had been selectively logged, and clearfelled sites. The second group consisted of sites which had been burnt. Sample quadrats on the burnt sites were classified according to fire intensity; unburnt (small patches within the generally burnt area), low medium and high fire intensities. Sites were classified as two, five, seven and nine years after burning. Regeneration of rainforest species occurred on logged sites, with regeneration on unburnt sites and on unburnt quadrats of burnt sites significantly greater than the regeneration of Eucalyptus regnans. Stocking rates of rainforest species was found to decrease with increasing fire intensity. A positive association occurs between the density of rainforest seedlings and mosses, and a negative association between density of rainforest seedlings and shrubs and ferns. Nothofagus cunninghamii and Eucryphia lucida regenerate better than other rainforest species. No significant difference was found between the regeneration rates of Nothofagus cunninghamii and Eucryphia lucida. Evidence was found which indicates that floristic composition changes with increasing time since fire and with different fire intensities. Eucalyptus regnans was found to regenerate poorly. On burnt sites, stocking rates of E. regnans increased with increasing fire intensity and this increase varied according to both fire intensity and time since fire. However, no strong evidence was found which indicated that greater stocking rates existed in quadrats on unburnt or burnt parts of the burnt sites. In contrast, when results were expressed in terms of mean seedling number, there was found to be a significant difference in the regeneration of Eucalyptus regnans in quadrats where fire had occurred compared to quadrats in unburnt parts of burnt sites with increasing time since fire. Furthermore, fire intensity did not affect regeneration rates and there was no obvious interaction between fire intensity and the time since fire. All species investigated were found to regenerate poorly on quartzite. Eucalyptus regnans stocking rates were not affected by fire intensity on quartzite sites. Phebalium squameum tended to be the most frequent tree seedling associated with Eucalyptus regnans on logged sites following fire. Acacia species were uncommon on the study sites. The remnant forest cover in the Parana State, Brazil, represents less than 10 % of the original vegetation present in the early 20th, and is distributed mostly in small fragments. This situation difficults, or even prevents, the regeneration of degraded areas through natural secondary succession, due the distance from seed sources. In this context, reforestations may be a solution to the reestablishment of biodiversity, since they turns the degraded area attractive to seed-dispersers and provides environmental conditions to the establishment of late sucessional plant species. Nowadays, secondary forests are considered very important environments for biodiversity conservation, though the knowledge on its ecology is still incomplete. The present study presents, in three chapters, the data of the inventory of the species that are regenerating in the understorey of reforestation areas. In the first chapter, the diversity of the regenerating species was compared between three reforestations, considering the proximity to forest fragments. The seed source proximity did not presented direct relation to the diversity verified in the understorey in the scale used in study, being the stand structure the factor of greater influence in the regeneration. In the chapter 2 are presented data of a single reforestation area, adjacent to a forest fragment. The influence of the distance of the forest edge in the regeneration was undertaken with plots distributed in a distance gradient starting at the encounter of the reforestation and the primary forest. The distance of the forest edge did not cause impact in the understory regeneration, and once again the stand structure explains variation in the species diversity, richness and abundance. The third chapter presents data over the regeneration in the understoreys of Araucaria angustifolia reforestation areas planted 12, 22, 35 and 43 years ago. Increase in reforestation age showed a non-significant trend to an increase in the species diversity and richness, which was represented in general by heliophytes plants. The variable that best explain the colonization of the understorey was the canopy cover.

▼ The emergence of markets for ecosystem services and the implementation of A/R CDM projects across the developing world in recent time have changed the nature of dependence of rural people on forest resources. It is, therefore, timely to investigate the livelihood impacts of carbon forestry activities that are implemented on communal forest land. The main objective of this study was to disclose the impacts of Humbo A/R CDM project on the livelihoods of local people. The study employed mixed methods research. Three out of seven Forest Development and Protection Cooperatives (FDPCs) were purposively selected. 132 households were selected from three FDPCs for household survey using systematic random sampling technique. In addition, four key informant interviews and three focus group discussions were conducted to investigate community level impacts of the project. Findings indicate that the project caused a significant reduction in the households’ dependence on the forest land for fuel-wood, fodder and grazing area which in turn forced 24.2% of the households to purchase fuel-wood, 39.4 % to purchase fodder and 62.9 % to reduce their livestock possessions. Although 68.9 % of the respondents reported to have benefited from the created job opportunities, and 37.1 % received skill trainings in income generating activities, only 22% of the respondents attributed the improvement of their households’ income to benefits associated with the project. The protection of the forest land came up with negative livelihood outcomes particularly for households which previously highly depended on the forestland and for those living in close proximity of the protected forest due to its discouraging effect on crop and livestock production. At community level, the project achieved positive outcomes such as formation of FDPCs and strengthening their institutional capacity, building physical assets though some were not in line with priority needs of the communities, improved microclimatic conditions and increased savings of FDPCs. Whereas, weakening of informal institutions for joint ownership of livestock (Kottaa), share breeding of livestock (Ulo Kotta) and exchange of draught oxen (Booraa Gatuwaa) were worth mentioning negative outcomes. Finally, with regard to the attitude of the respondents towards the protected forest, among several variables, only educational status, size of farmland and the distance of the households from the forestland were found to statistically significantly predict the attitude of the respondents towards the forest. As sustainability of the forest depends on the positive valuation of the forest by surrounding inhabitants, fencing the forest area to reduce human-wildlife conflict; developing frameworks for access to microcredit services in each FDPCs and letting the community decide over the utilization of carbon revenue are, therefore, recommended measures to achieve positive livelihood impact at household level and thereby to ensure the sustainability of the forest management. ▼ Reforesting harvested lands in southwestern Oregon has been difficult because of low rainfall, high evaporative demand, and competitive understory vegetation. Herbicides have been a preferred method to control competing vegetation but herbicide use on federal lands was curtailed in 1984. As a result, interest in livestock grazing as a vegetation control method has increased. I used prescribed cattle grazing from 1986-1990 to assess effects on reforestation. Treatments were established on a low-elevation (670 m) site to evaluate seedling survival and growth of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirbel) Franco.) and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Dougl.). Treatments were: a) seeding of palatable forage species (SU); b) seeding with grazing (SG); c) no seeding with grazing (NG); and d) no seeding or grazing, with paper mulch applied on Douglas-fir only (PM/C). Year 5 mortality among treatments ranged from 57 to 87% for Douglas-fir and 11 to 25% for ponderosa pine. Porcupine girdling and late-spring frost were major causal factors in ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir mortality, respectively. Competition from understory vegetation, browsing, and trampling were only minor causal factors in seedling mortality. Cumulative growth of both species was best in NG. Severe browsing by cattle in year 2 on SG resulted in reduced year 3 relative growth for ponderosa pine. However, year 2 browsing did not reduce long-term relative growth. By year 5, relative growth for ponderosa pine was greatest in SG and lowest in SU. During years 1-3, soil moisture availability was not enhanced on the grazed vs. ungrazed treatments. However, by year 4, xylem potentials and soil moisture indicated seedlings in SG were less water-stressed than those in SU. Reduced water stress probably resulted from reductions in roots of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerate L.) because of defoliation. Sampling with a root periscope indicated roots were reduced for defoliated (SG) plants compared with undefoliated (SU) plants. Leaf area and root growth reductions were apparent mechanisms permitting increased soil moisture availability. These results suggested that prescribed cattle grazing can facilitate reforestation. ▼ Historically, between 40-60% of the Coast Range of Oregon was comprised of structurally diverse, old forests initiated by disturbances of various spatial scales ranging from thousands of acres (large fires) to the size of a single tree (windthrow). The predominant regeneration method of the past several decades, however, has been clearcutting of units that are at least 8 ha in size followed by burning and/or herbicide application and planting of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) seedlings at high densities. Some question the ability of this regeneration method to provide many of the structural characteristics that existed historically in Pacific Northwest forests. In order to address these concerns, alternative silvicultural practices have been proposed in which green trees and snags are maintained after harvest so that species reliant upon these structures are able to persist through the artificial disturbance. Our research assessed conifer regeneration, understory vegetation, and artificial snag dynamics 16 to 18 years after treatment in clearcuts and two alternative silvicultural regimes: twostory-75% of volume removed resulting in 20 to 30 green trees/ha and group selection- 33% of volume removed in 0.2 to 1.0 ha circular, square, or strip-shaped gaps. All harvested areas were planted with Douglas-fir seedlings and competing vegetation was controlled using herbicide. Uncut controls were included in the study and monitored. Concurrent with harvest, 804 mature Douglas-fir trees were topped both with and without retention of live branches in order to create snags and living character trees. Conifer regeneration growth and survival were greatest in the clearcut treatments, intermediate in the two-story treatment and least in the gaps of the group selection treatment. Gap size was positively correlated with regeneration growth but had no significant effect on survival. Understory vegetation communities were generally resilient to disturbance and silvicultural regime had no effect on either total plant cover or tall shrub cover. More disturbed areas had greater species diversity which was driven largely by greater abundance of exotic ruderals. Young stand development may have had a larger impact on vegetation communities than silvicultural treatment. Twenty-four percent of artificially topped conifers with live branch retention remained living 16 to 18 years after treatment. Only 4% of artificially topped conifers with no live branch retention had broken 16 to 18 years after treatment. DBH of artificially topped conifers was negatively correlated with probability of falling. Advisors/Committee Members: Bailey, John D (advisor), Tappeiner, John (committee member).

▼ Reforestation of certain areas of southwestern Oregon has become a serious problem. Reforestation failures are evident in numerous clear-cut stands, but failures are also noted in various partially-cut stands. The Dead Indian Plateau, approximately twenty miles east of Ashland, Oregon, has many areas where this is evident. This study investigated rodents, drought, cattle, and differences between clear-cut and canopied areas as factors associated with poor seedling survival. Four plantations were established on the plateau in the spring of 1975, and data were obtained through two growing seasons. Three species, Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco.), white fir (Abies concolor (Cord. and Glend. (Lindl. )), and ponderosa pine (Pinus poriderosa Dougi. ex Loud.) were planted on each plantation in a split-split plot experimental design. Both containerized and bare-root stock of each species were used. Survival and growth were tallied throughout the study, then subjected to analyses of variance. There were several significant differences. Canopied areas had better survival than open areas. Bare-root stock survived better than container-grown stock. Ponderosa pine had much better survival than Douglas-fir or white fir in the clear-cut areas. Caging effectively protected seedlings from rodent damage, as there were significant caged s.uncaged survival differences in clear-cut areas. There also were significant species -fencing and species -caging interactions. Growth data for all species and all plantations were analysed for canopied areas only. (Excessive mortality precluded several clear-cut growth analyses.) Plantation2 had significantly better growth than the other plantations. Caged seedlings grew much better than uncaged. Container-grown Douglas-fir and white fir grew significantly better than bare-root stock. With this many significant interactions, it is apparent that no single factor was associated with seedling survival and growth on. the Dead Indian plantations. The most apparent survival difference was between open and canopied plots. Absence of overs tory canopy cover was related to seedling mortality. This was largely due to a combination of growing season frosts and gophers. Damage from these factors was limited under a canopy cover. For satisfactory survival, seedlings should be planted under a forest cover. Later, after seedlings are large enough to withstand severe frosts, the canopy can be removed. The superior growth of containerized Douglas-fir and white fir under overstory canopies indicates that these stock types may be underplanted on severe sites in the Dead Indian area where shelterwood harvesting is practiced. Further study should be conducted to substantiate this conclusion. Superior survival of bare-root ponderosa pine in the open indicates that it may be preferred for planting on clearcut sites in the study area. Other frost hardy and drought resistant species should also be investigated for suitability in clear-cut areas. This includes Douglas-fir stock with induced frost hardiness. ▼ Biochar is a form of stable organic carbon whose application to soils has the potential to sequester large amounts of atmospheric CO2 while improving the physical, chemical and biological properties of soil. However, the optimal rates and methods of biochar application are unknown for many situations. Three experiments were performed to test methods of biochar application to soils as a stand-alone amendment, in combination with biosolids as a complementary amendment and in-situ through controlled landscape burning. The first was a greenhouse pot study, which involved combining biochar with spoil from an Appalachian surface coal mine to grow trees. Biochar combined with mine soil produced a much higher growth rate for trees, and pure biochar helped tree root growth, suggesting that it might be useful as a broadcasted amendment, as a nursery growing medium or as a backfill in tree planting holes. The second experiment explored methods to combine biochar and biosolids materials to form a granular product. Combining biochar and biosolids before applications reduced windborne losses of biochar as well as the nutrient leachate produced by the biosolids. Drum rolling was found to work best for producing aggregate granules. Wetting pure biochar to 100% gravimetric water content before applications reduced windborne losses from over 50% to under 5% as compared to when it was applied as a dry product. A series of controlled burns were conducted in the third experiment to determine the ideal range of meteorological conditions to produce the highest possible biochar yields in-situ. Relative humidity, forest litter moisture and ambient temperature were found to be the governing factors over the tonnage of biochar produced. Up to 3.0 Mg Ha-1 of biochar were produced under ideal conditions by controlled burning. Repeated high-yielding burns have the potential accumulate large amounts of biochar in the soil to improve soil properties. ▼ To combat the most dire effects of ecosystem decline and climate change, leading academics and ecologists are calling for Transformative Change of existing social and economic practices. Research suggests that changes in land use, specifically large-scale reforestation, could help to achieve sustainability and protect existing biodiversity and ecosystem services. While global governmental organizations receive reforestation pledges, commitments are frequently not realized. This thesis proposes a Landscape-scale Engagement Platform methodology to engage multi-scalar participation of government agencies, citizen groups and private-property owners across an entire region in a singular vision of reforestation and ecosystem rehabilitation. As no single group or individual may alone achieve landscape-scale change, this effort is driven by a New Power approach that encourages broad participation and provides tools that allow corridors of visibility into landscapes across all scales. To illustrate this Landscape-scale Engagement Platform approach, this design thesis offers “The Great American Squirrel Trail” as an Atlantic Ocean to Mississippi River reforestation and wildlife corridor proposal that also seeks to revitalize economically challenged counties in the Ohio River Valley and Appalachian Mountains. The activation plan, informed by GIS analysis and cross-country ground-truthing, focuses on New Power inspired methods including establishing a Vision though Landscape Concept, garnering Belief through landscape design interventions, fostering Engagement through social media and digital portals that increase visibility into the regional and local landscape and encouraging Stewardship by recognizing partners and patrons of the program. This Landscape-scale Engagement Platform approach presents a promising method for involving a landscape's property-owners and stakeholders as active, always-on participants in the collective vision and health of their regional landscape. And in doing so, it also offers an opportunity for regional social and economic Transformative Change. Reforestation has been considered as a strategy for alleviating diverse environmental degradation problems and mitigating anthropogenic global warming in recent years. The ‘Grain for Green Project’ in China is one of the key reforestation programmes that have been implemented in recent years. The primary goal of the project is to mitigate soil erosion problems across the Loess Plateau region through converting erodible crop lands into forests. The large changes from agricultural land to forest can modify important biophysical characteristics of the land surface, potentially resulting in climate change at a variety of spatial scales.

The Loess Plateau, located in the northern part of China, is considered one of the world’s most sensitive areas to global climate change. The plateau is located in the semi-arid transition zone and is characterized by complex topography. The extensive reforestation in the plateau would lead to further complex conditions in the local climate. The local climate is critical for the rain-fed agriculture and natural vegetation primarily through affecting the water availability in this semi-arid area. However, relatively few studies explicitly documented the potential climatic effects of reforestation over the Loess Plateau.

The primary aim of this research was to understand the local climate features and predict the potential impacts of the reforestation programme on the climate over the Loess Plateau. The Regional Climate Model version 4.3 (RegCM4.3) was applied based on its generally good performance. The model was firstly validated over the Loess Plateau region. The simulation overall represented the major climate features well, including surface temperature, precipitation and regional circulation features at the near-surface level over the Loess Plateau. However the model was found with pronounced cold biases during winter. Analyses indicated that biases were generally caused by the combined effects of deficiencies in interior dynamical processes of the model and were exaggerated by uncertainties among the observational datasets.

Secondly, the major sensitivities of RegCM4.3 in simulating the regional climate over the Loess Plateau were examined. A series of simulations using different configurations were applied to investigate the model sensitivity to several critical model parameterizations. When forests are cut down or degraded and the functioning of such ecosystems is lost, this not only means that a lot of biodiversity is lost. It also involves large carbon emissions, the loss of ecosystem services and livelihoods of people who depend on forest resources. Reforestation and forest rehabilitation can sequester carbon, and return some of the biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and services. Moreover, reforestation and forest rehabilitation can reduce the need for harvesting forest resources from undisturbed forests by sustainably providing these resources in a more controlled environment.There are several ways in which reforestation and forest rehabilitation can take place. Here ecological reforestation and forest rehabilitation, agroforestry and silvopastoral systems, and cultivated tree plantations are the methods that are explored for their advantages and disadvantages. Since such large areas have been deforested or degraded in the past, these methods are discussed in the perspective of large scale implementation. It turns out that each of these methods has certain advantages and disadvantages when is comes to large scale implementation. Ecological reforestation and forest rehabilitation sequesters most carbon and is most beneficial for biodiversity and ecosystem function. However this method is costly and does not yield many direct financial benefits. Agroforests and sylvopastoral systems combine carbon sequestration with a larger amount of biodiversity and direct financial benefits. But this method is very labour intensive and therefore difficult to implement on a large scale. Lastly, commercial tree plantations generate quite a lot of direct financial benefits. But their contributions to biodiversity and carbon sequestration on the long term are much lower, as these plantations are eventually harvested. Therefore, to implement these methods on a large scale, these have to be combined in a landscape mosaic. In this way many of the individual goals can be achieved while reducing the risks and disadvantages involved with implementing each methods separately. Also these various methods can benefit from the services provided by the others. One last major difficulty that remains to be addressed, is the effect of climate change. As the climate is expected to change in many areas, it is highly recommended that people and organisations take this into account when engaging in reforestation or forest rehabilitation. ▼ Competition between planted Eucalyptus nitens and naturally regenerated Acacia dealbata weeds was investigated in an industrial plantation in north-east Tasmania. The effects of this competition on stand growth, canopy architecture, tree water use and leaf gas exchange were considered in 1988- and 1992-planted stands during the period 1994-1997. Under favourable moisture conditions, A. dealbata grew at a rate close to (and sometimes exceeding) that of E. nitens. Competition peaked at age 2-6 years before declining as the A. dealbata canopy was suppressed, in part by intraspecific Acacia competition and consequent self-thinning. At ages 2-4 years, E. nitens basal area was highly correlated inversely with both A. dealbata stem frequency and basal area. However, by age 6 years, E. nitens basal area was not a significant correlate of A. dealbata basal area. The effects of competition on the productivity of E. nitens were substantial, reducing standing volume compared to Acacia-free plots by almost 25% by age 8 years. Soil nitrogen status was positively correlated with A. dealbata presence and negatively correlated with E. nitens basal area. A. dealbata was therefore considered to be a net contributor of nitrogen but competition for other resources negated any positive effects of this contribution. Silviculture during site preparation and establishment was identified as an important contributor to the distribution and abundance OA. dealbata throughout the plantation. Highly significant regression relationships were developed among leaf area and a number of stem variables for A. dealbata and E. nitens. Whilst basal area was found to be a suitable predictor of leaf area for both species, the closest relationships were developed between leaf area and sapwood area or cross-sectional area at the crown base. The relationships between basal area and leaf area were used to scale basal area measurements to stand leaf area index which was partitioned between the two species. In 1995, for nine 7-year-old plots with Acacia competition, E. nitens had an average stand LAI of 2.6 compared to an average LA! of 4.3 for five plots of the same age without competition. In 1996, for six 8- year-old plots with Acacia competition, A. dealbata contributed an average 20% of a stand LAI of 3.4. In a single 4-year-old plot, A. dealbata contributed 50% of a total LA! of 2.9. In an adjacent Acacia-free plot, the LA! of E. nitens was 2.5, 86% of canopy LAI in the Acacia infested plot (above) but nearly twice that of the eucalypt component of that plot. Estimates of vertical leaf area distribution within an 8-year-old Acacia-infested plot indicated that leaf area of E. nitens was concentrated between 13 m and 22 m above the ground, whereas leaf area of A. dealbata was concentrated between 8 m and 16 m above the ground. Data from transects of vertical irradiance indicated that transmittance was reduced most markedly between 14 m and 20 m above ground. ▼ Current reclamation research following surface mining in the Appalachian coal region seeks to measure carbon (C) and nutrient accumulation and retention under forest vegetation to better understand the role of reforestation in the re-establishment of these ecosystem services. This study capitalized on the Controlled Overburden Placement Experiment (COPE), a 29-year-old reclamation research installation in southwestern Virginia, to estimate long-term mine soil C sequestration potentials and nutrient capitals after different reclamation strategies. The COPE includes two studies, a rock mix study (RM) comparing topsoil substitutes created from different ratios of local overburden [pure sandstone (SS), pure siltstone (SiS), 2:1 SS to SiS, 1:1 SS to SiS, and 1:2 SS to SiS], and a surface amendment study (SA) comparing organic amendments [control (CON), natural topsoil (TS), sawdust (SD), and 22 Mg ha-1 (22B), 56 Mg ha-1 (56B), 112 Mg ha-1 (112B) and 224 Mg ha-1 (224B) of biosolids] on a common 2:1 SS to SiS topsoil substitute. In the RM, overburden selection significantly affected soil nitrogen (N) and C concentrations as well as many other soil chemical [e.g., available phosphorus (P), pH, and other macro- and micronutrients) and physical (e.g., sand, silt and clay contents) properties. C sequestration rates were also significantly different and ranged from 0.13 to 0.47 Mg C ha-1 yr-1. Many of the differences demonstrated relationships with the mineral make-up of the RM treatment. The SA mine soils also differed significantly in many properties after 29 years, including N, C, and many other nutrient concentrations and contents. C sequestration rates were also significantly different with the SD and 224B treatments having negative sequestration rates, and the remaining treatments ranging from 0.23 to 0.80 Mg C ha-1 yr-1. Collectively, the results demonstrate that topsoil substitutes and surface amendments show divergent trends in soil C and nutrient dynamics after nearly three decades of development and stress the importance of post- mining reclamation based on available materials and reclamation goals. ▼ Cities, and African cities in particular, will need a suite of relevant tools and approaches to deal with the varied climate change-related threats that these cities will likely endure in the future. African cities will be most affected due to the challenges of underdevelopment and resource shortages and, therefore, must address the climate change challenge in a way that ensures meaningful developmental co-benefits and overall cost-effectiveness. Local level actions, such as ecosystem-based adaptation (EBA), and community-based adaptation (CBA), are both effective forms of adaptation for African cities. The City of Durban (eThekwini Municipality, South Africa), has embarked on a novel approach that combines both these tools, the community ecosystem-based adaptation (CEBA) concept, of which the Buffelsdraai Landfill Community Reforestation Project (BLCRP) is a powerful example. The BLCRP is restoring indigenous forest in the buffer zone surrounding the Buffelsdraai Regional Landfill Site. The project aims to sequester a proportion of CO2 emissions generated locally during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, whilst also uplifting local impoverished communities and building functional ecological infrastructure. The need to build the resilience of the city to climate change, in the face of increased uncertainty and risk, is considered urgent by planners. Building functional ecological infrastructure, which includes indigenous forest ecosystems, can help bolster this resilience. Early detection in restoration projects, such as the BLCRP, can allow problems to be identified and rectified through adaptive management in the early stages of restoration. This approach will affect the success and cost effectiveness of the restoration project. The BLCRP is currently in the establishment phase, a time when enrichment planting is best evaluated. This study examines the extent to which the composition, measures of diversity, and functional traits of planted species at restoration sites, are comparable with a local forest reference site. After three to five years, restored sites show low similarity with the reference forest due to different species composition and low species diversity and richness. Functional richness is significantly lower in two of the Buffelsdraai sites. Additionally, few bird-dispersed species were planted at Buffelsdraai and the restoration sites are infested with invasive alien plants compared with the reference ecosystem site. Furthermore, planted tree densities at the restoration site were considerably lower than figures recommended for restoration projects. Given these findings, the BLCRP is unlikely to meet long-term goals. To address these project shortfalls, I propose a higher planting density and a rigorous process to select tree species for planting. This includes implementing the framework species method at Buffelsdraai, which has proven successful in various countries.
